  Yes, vanchi. first time when I saw this thread, I could not undergo this "capital punishment" and sustain till the end. ::-))
  
  ganesh, the answer to why lies in the fact that "I underwent this; so I inflict it", very similar logic holds for some brutal bullying in the schools (known popularly in india as ragging), ,sledgging in the cricket field, mugging in the streets, etc.
  
  We owe it in the first place to child marriage. When the DIL is too young, she has to listen, nothing but listen to the MIL. It is mostly painful, the pain gets into the heart "pacumaratthu aaNipOl", then somewhere in the ego,it is etched. The only out burst happens very late, when she gets someone across the stick. With increasing marriage age, this reduces.
  
  But, do we need a thread for this under tamil literature?
