A brief study on the seaport cities of Kotkai, Thondi and Kaayalpattinam of the Paandiyan Kingdom of Tamil Nadu
(1) Kotkai
During the Third Thamil Sangam period the Paandiyan Seaport city was the Kotkai lying north of the point where the Kotkai lagoon waters mixes up with the sea. The present minor - Cittraaru and Thaamiraparani rivers joins together near Tachchanallur and form the major Thaamiraparani river which falls into the Kotkai lagoon near Kurumbur and finally reaches the sea at Kotkai seaport.
The seaport city finds mention in many Sangam Period Tamil Literary works as an the important Paandiyan Seaport city. The third Thamil Sangam Tamil literary work namely the Ahanaanooru refers to Kotkai Seaport (Kotkai munthurai) where Pearls are found as that of the Valuthi (Paandiya) king having a beautiful chariot. Another poem in this same literary work too mentions of the Pearls found in Kotkai referred to as a great Seaport (Perumthurai) where prevails the rule of Paandiyar who conducts wars of valour. A further poem from Ahanaanooru describes the Kotkai as having a long beach with sea sand mounds.
Another Sangam Period poetic work Iynkurunooru too refers to 'Kotkai Perumthurai' (Kotkai great seaport) as that of the 'king of Kotkai' (Kotkai Komaan - the Paandiyan). Further the Sangm Literary work namely the Nattrinai metions in the spread of the region where pearls are found abound was the Kotkai Seaport.
The Sangam period literary work the Mathuraikaanchi and Sirupaanaatruppadai sung on same Paandiyan king the Thalaiyaalangaanathu cheru vendra Neduncheliyan (A.D.134-156) refers to him also as king of Kotkai (in adition to Mathurai).
Even in the great Tamil epic Silappathikaaram of the first century A.D. we find the Ariyappadai kadantha Neduncheliyan (A.D.134-156) met his death with the great tragedy at Mathura, the Paandiyan prince Vetrivet Cheliyan (A.D.156-178) ruling the southern region of Paandiya Nadu from the great seaport city of Kotkai under Neduncheliyan, succeeded on the Paandiyan throne at Mathurai. It also refers to the pearls from Kotkai Perumthurai.
Another Sangam period literary work named Muththolaayiram which states the Kortkai king at that time was Paandiyan Chitramaadaththu thunjiya Nan Maran (A.D178-200)

(2) Thondi
During the third Sangam period of Tamil Nadu there was also a lesser seaport city in the Paandiyan kingdom named Thondi 13 kms east of Tiruvadanai on the coastal region (in the present Ramanathapuram district) of Tamil Nadu, in addition to the bigger seaport city of Kotkai. The Paandiyan kingdom of this period had Paandiyan princes ruling from Kotkai, 'under' the Pandiya kings ruling from Mathurai. The foreign goods that came to Paandiya country during this period for their quicker and easy transport to the capital city at Mathurai, also made use of the lesser seaport Thondi instead of Kotkai as it was more nearer than the latter.
It was after the Kalabhra (Kalappirar) (A.D.467-506) occupation and rule of 'Paandiya Naadu' under king Atchutha Vikraanthakan the seaport city of Kotkai lost its importance, and the seaport Thondi 're-imerged' as the important seaport city of the Paandiyan kings during the pre-medieval (A.D.400-800) and medieval period (A.D.800-1200).

(3) Kaayalpattinam
However with the emergence of the second Paandiyan Empire during the beginning of the post-medieval period (A.D.1200-1600) under king Maravaraman Sunthara Paandiyan - 1 (A.D.1219-1239) the port of Thondi lost its importance, and a new seaport city named Kaayalpattinam (about 8 km north of the present Thiruchchendur) came into existance lying south of the region where the former Kotkai lagoon waters mixed with the sea. The relocation of the Paandiyan seaport (Kotkai) just north of the lagoon to (Kaayalpattinam) just south of same, could have been resulted possibly with the destruction of the former in a Tsunami in this region.

During the post Medieval period the Venetian Traveller the Marco Polo mention of the Kaayalpattinam as follows:
".......Cail (Kayal = Kaayalpattinam) is a noble and great city. it belongs to Ashar the eldest of the five brothers who are kings. And you must know that at this city touch all the ships that come from the west from Cormos, Kisi, Aden, and all Arabia laden with horses and othere wares. Traders touch at this port because it is excellently situated and good market for trading. For from many different lands there came numerous merchants to buy horses and other things. The (Paandiyan) king is very wealthy in treasure he wears many beautiful gems on his person. he is splendidly adorned. He governs his kingdom most justly, especially as regards foreign merchants namely those that come from other lands. He protects and governs them with great equity. I will add that if Merchants go thither so willingly it is because of this good King who protects them so well. True it is that they also obtain great gain and profit there......"

Discussion
The above reference in the Travels of Marco Polo clearly states:
(a) "......the great province the of Mabaar (present Tamil Nadu).....there are five kings who are own brothers
(Note: From the writings of Marco Polo we note Malabaar was Kerala region and Mabaar or Malibaar was Tamil Nadu region)
(b) "......at this end of the province reigns one of these brothers Sender Bandi Dever by name who is the most important and the greatest......."
(c) "......Cail (Kayal = Kaayalpattinam) is a noble and great city. it belongs to Ashar the eldest of the five brothers who are kings......"
From the above three references it is clear Sunder Bandi Dever who "is the most important and the greatest" hence he has to be the Paandya king who ruled from the principal city of the Paandiyan kingdom the Mathurai, and hence has to be the king Sadaiyavarman Sunthara Paandiyan - 1 (A.D.1251-1292) of this period. His period of rule should have been as much as around 42 years. He had three brothers ruling three regions of the Paandian empire of this period.
In describing Maaravarman Kulasekara Paandiyan he simply says he was king Kulasekaran (Ashar) the eldest among the five brothers ruling from (Cail) Kaayalpattinam. Since Maaravarman Kulasekaran ruled from Kaayalpattinam the second important (seaport) city during the same period Sadaiyavarman Sunthara Paandiyan - 1 ruled from Mathurai the capital city of Paandiyar, it is very clear that Kulasekaran was the heir-apparent of Sadaiyavarman Sunthara Paandiyan - 1 and hence the son of the latter.
From the foregoing it is very clear that Kaayalpattinam was essentially the seaport city of post-medieval period Paandiyan kings, and existed during the period of rule by king Sadaiyavarman Sundera Paandiyan - 1 and his son Maravarman Kulasekara Paandiyan, long before the Muslim invasion of the Paandiyan capital city of Mathurai under Malik Kafur in A.D.1311.
