I didn't watch many films this year. Still out of the films I watched, definitely Yuddham Sei, Aadukalam (not sure, if this will be counted for this year or last years as it has already been awarded for last year) and Azhagarsaamiyin Kuthirai tops my list.
Azhagarsaamiyin kuthirai may not have great twists and great humor, but somehow I felt that there was whole life and soul in that film. Beautiful story by Bhaskar Shakthi and faithfully (whatever extent possible) reproduced by Susheedran. The village and all the characters etched in my mind. Some excellent dialogues, natural acting, great direction and wonderful music enhanced the film to newer levels and kept me engaging every moment. But the most disappointing part is, it is so under-rated. No one knew this film, but whoever I recommended this fim, were very happy and at the same time felt guilty that these films never came to their attention and thanked me for introducing this gem, otherwise an unknown film, that says it all.

2011 is a really good year for all stars and superstars. Most of their movies did well while there weren't as many good films or surprise hits from newcomers, like the last few years.
Vijay - Kavalan & Velayudham
Ajith - Mangatha
Surya - Ezham Arivu (The dubbed Raktha Charitram bombed)
Vikram - Deiva Thirumagal. (Hope Raja Pattai does well)
Dhanush - 5 movies this year, out of which Aadukalam was a hit. Not sure if ME is doing well.
Simbu - Vaanam. (Osthi epdi therila)
Karthi - Siruthai
My favourite: Yudhdham Sei (Indha padam pidichcha alavukku vera endha padamum pidikkala)
Other movies which I found good: Deiva Thirumagal, Kavalan, Muran(Reason: I havent seen the original Hitchcock movie yet & I like both Prasanna & Cheran), KO, Payanam
Watchable: Mangatha,Vaanam (Prakash Raj, Saranya tracks and Santhanam comedy ONLY), Ezhaam Arivu (Saw the movie with least expectation. First half was OK)
Gambleet Disappointment: Ponnar Shankar

It doesn't look that bad -- I mean this literally, the photography and the look of the movie isn't terrible -- which says something for technology and/or their budget. Everything else is amateurish: the awful acting, most especially the male romantic lead; the bland story with its silly "overhearing" to solve the mystery; the portentious direction with slow-mo's for no reason whatsoever; the interminable pacing to pad out the running time. The strangest thing is apparently half the cast consists of directors, I would expect at least the direction not to be so incompetent.
Was Muthukku Muthaga this year? That was not a well-made movie either but the fast pacing, comedy, songs, multiple storylines etc keep the energy level so high that it is easier to overlook the mess of the story, dialogue, acting etc.
Best: Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai.
Worst Disappointment: Avan Ivan, I stopped after about 20 minutes, the execution was so broad that it has painful to watch.

Films you should have watched in 2011
Here is a list of films that were critically raved about and at the same time were pathbreaking and will be remembered
Aadukalam
Vetrimaran’s screenplay and treatment along with Dhanush’s power packed awardwinning performance and GV Prakash’s soothing music made it memorable
Aranya Kaandam
Thiagarajan Kumararaja made an impressive debut with the raw, realistic and brilliant depiction of the mean streets of Chennai. His treatment was original and something new to Tamil cinema.
Engeyum Eppodhum
The film is a romantic drama with two parallel love stories set against the backdrop of a gruesome accident. M Saravanan has blended it beautifully with songs and comedy.
Mayakkam Enna
Selvaraghavan once again proved that he is a master at telling off-kilter emotional romantic tales with the right technical glitz and packaging. Songs, acting from lead actors, camerawork and editing were top class
Mounaguru
Debutant director Shanthakumar has come out with an edge of the seat riveting crime thriller with terrific plot twists and characterisations. The best thing about the film was the uncompromising manner in which the director packaged the film.
Vaagai Sooda Vaa
A thought-provoking film which was beautiful, complete and laced with social consciousness. Director Sargunam proves that a simple plot with interesting characters is all it takes to engage an audience. Cinematographer Omprakash and new music director Ghibran were major assets.
Vengayam
It was a neat film about superstition and evil practices prevailing in our society. Director Rajkumar should be lauded and encouraged for making a small film with newcomers that exposes fake godmen, practitioners and con astrologers who create havoc in our society.
Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai
This simple feel-good film was brave attempt by director Suseenthiran who proved that you don’t need a good-looking hero to make a good-looking film. A simple and straightforward film about the bonding between a man and his pony, which touched your heart strings.

2011- Films which disappointed us this year
2011 has been a year of some small surprises and more than a few big disappointments (based on the talents of the people involved and the expectations they shattered)
Drawing up a list of films that were detested this year was no easy job.
Please remember that this list has no reflection on their box-office performances. These are our choices, and you’re welcome to disagree with them.
180- Directed by ad filmmaker Jayendra, 180 was painfully predictable, and offers nothing original in its writing or treatment. No one figured out what the director was trying to say in the first place and it was impossible to find much love or good songs in this film publicised as a romantic musical.
Vedi - A shoddy remake of a Telugu action film, this Vishal-Sameera Reddy film was shot and packaged in a careless manner by director Prabhu Deva. The end result- it looked like a C-grade action film. The film didn’t work because it was hard to empathize with any of the characters and actors failed to rise above the flawed script.
7aum Arivu-Agreed the film is a hit and that too with its huge budget. In the promos, director Murugadoss repeatedly said that viewers who saw Ghajini will get much more thrills and entertainment from this film. Going in with strictly those expectations, audiences came out felt cheated. 7 aum Arivu is a perfect example of how over-hype can kill a film. Expectations were sky-high especially when you have a dream combo like Suriya and AR Murgadoss, but somehow the film failed to deliver the goods.
Venghai- Director Hari does not believe in changes be it the story, milieu, characters or even their looks. Every film of his looks like the previous one and Venghai was nothing but old wine with hardly any story or twists. The film failed to work as everybody from lead artist to technicians were bored with the proceeding and fell asleep.
Rajapattai – Even die-hard loyal Vikram fans came out of the theatres yawning as director Sussenthiran with an impeccable track-record failed to deliver the goods. The film misfired in all departments be it story, screenplay, twists or even music.
Nadunisi Naaygal- An interesting experiment that backfired. This forgettable thriller missed its goal and was a major disappointment as it came from the Gautham Menon stable. It suffered from a dull script, inane dialogues and was seen as crude and revolting. Neither slick nor fast-paced, the director went on an ego massage trip that failed to take off.

Uyarthiru 420 is a rascy entertainer in which Snehan (Tamil poet, lyricist) tried to become an MASS HERO in his first movie. Director had a clever play in handling the Snehan's -ive side of acting skill. Movie would have been an hit if a BIG STAR had acted in Snehan role.
