Anushka only in flashback
Feb 21, 2012
http://www.accesskollywood.com/akd-i...m-21-02-12.jpg
Anushka will appear only in the flashback scenes in Thandavam, say sources. The film starring Vikram takes place in India and the US. The flashback is set in India and Anushka’s role will end here.
Amy Jackson’s character will be the highlight in the portions that are shot in the US, say sources close to Thandavam unit. Though there are two heroines, director AL Vijay given adequate scope to both the leading ladies, we are told.
Thandavam is produced by UTV Motion Pictures and the music for this film has been scored by GV Prakash.

The Kollywood grapevine is abuzz that top commercial director Shankar is teaming up with his Anniyan hero Vikram again in an all new adventure film.
Though there is no official confirmation, our sources confirmed that the film will take off once Vikram completes Thaandavam.
What has lent credence to the rumour is that Shankar wrote on his website- “As I started working on mynext script, I could not be in touch with you. So far I have not finalisedanyone regarding the next project. Just working on the story”
Noted writers Suba, the pen name of D Suresh and Balakrishnan, will be teaming up with director Shankar for his next project. Shankar has been working on his script for the last six months
Quite certain it will be Vikram..Ajit/Vijay/Surya oda dates ellam full..so Vikram thaan obvious choice

Even if they have dates in hand, I don't think they would accept this offer especially with Shankar who usually takes minimum 1.5 years to complete a film and release.

looks is a fuction of movies, illaya? people with keen interest in movies, do you hear them complain about how certain actors look, say, lal/dhanush/kalki (not text book examples for good looks, are they?)? us 'accepting' them has more to do with the cinema and roles they associate themselves with, thaane?

1. If a person is a huge fan of G Ramanathan, M K Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, P U Chinnapa times, they will selectively approach to MSV-TKR and KVM, but they will never go beyond that.
2. If a person is a huge fan of MSV-TKR times, they will selectively approach to KVM, but they will never go beyond that.
3. If a person is a huge fan of KVM, they will selectively approach MSV or even MSV-TKR, but they will never go beyond that.
4. If a person is a huge fan of MSV, they will selectively approach IR, but never go beyond that.
5. If a person is a huge fan of IR, they will selectively approach ARR, but never go beyond that
6. If a person is a huge fan of ARR, they will selectively approach every other today's music, if I am not wrong. See here itself we lost the track.

You can fill this part.
* Even when I am not considering other music directors who were part of each generation, that is implied.
According to music listening tradition (especially in TN, as far as I know) this is a fact and I have not seen much exceptions to it, except they switch the camps between the immediate/previous composers. Even if they don't switch camp, they have a high regard for previous generation composers. This is true for a MSV-TKR fan to switch to KVM and and IR fan to ARR and so on and even vice versa. But I have never seen anyone from KVM/MSV era going to current crop of music directors like GVP, Harris etc. That's a big jump from a hierarchy. Once our music tastes are set, it is very difficult to reset it. We may appreciate few songs from this generation, but that's about it, but could not overwhelmingly support these music directors. Especially the current crop who don't have any comparisons to yesteryear composers.
If a person enjoying MSV or KVM songs cannot even think of listening to GVP songs, leave alone appreciating it. That's why I am really surprised about how someone can "support" GVP songs which are no way near to any decent composers of yesteryears. Moreover there is not much original talent nowadays and there is no mark or style unique to music directors. That too if a person from MSV era is disliking IR's music, definitely GVP does not stand a chance there. To me, my ear buds are tuned mainly to IR songs (even I hear lot of other music), that's because right from my school days this is the main thing I have been listening to. I can go close to ARR, but not beyond that, as I can see a big dip in quality (based on my taste and especially applicable for today's music scenario, even it may not be applicable to yesteryears). Same way our parents, they may come close to IR, but they could not listen beyond that. The developing music taste also stops with age. I also feel, breaking the above tradition also breaks the balance. The real beauty is with vast variety of listeners with varied interests and tastes, the above tradition never gets broken.
Again I am not talking about enjoying some songs of today and appreciating (that we all do), I am talking about supporting some one who does not deserve it (alteast now) and supporting someone beyond our tastes (if at all we do). Just because lot of music is available today, we cannot like everything and anything is my point. I am just asking what it takes to be a staunch fan of whoever we adore rather than liking everything and anything? Which one is better? Definitely I would prefer the former. Like to know your view points.
*I know this post is not related to this thread, we can even discuss this in a separate thread, if you like.

The thing is we are talking two different approaches.
First approach: people who have absorbed the level of quality of MSV/IR/ARR - although we have had great composers like KVM, GR, rightfully considered as the trinity of TN - and who dont want to dilute their standards just because "latestA varra music/padathula EdhAvdhu oNNai appreciate paNNiyE AgaNum/ adhu oru necessary and sufficient condition for survival". These people might have strong preference for one or other of MSV/IR/ARR but in general, have high standards.
Second approach - irukkarudhulEyE idhu thEvalaippA. Ganja Karuppukku Karunas thevalaam. EdhO oNNai pArAttiyE AgaNum. They dont consciously place this latest sensation against MSV/IR/ARR standards. This also explains the succes of Deva, HJ, GVP etc.
idhula the approach I detest is "Look Ma, I love all MDs equally. I am so just, fair and un-fanatic". Dude, you just have diluted standards.
As I said to Sunil the other day, plastic-aiyE ivLo pugazhndhA appuRam Goldai epdi pugazhuvInga. Oru paguthaRidhal, pAgubAdu, discrimination sense vENAvA?
I might not be a fan of ARR. But a fan of ARR - ofcourse someone who goes beyond political support for ARR and is bought into Rahman's musical style and philosophy - is more worthy to me than an undiscriminating "everything is good, everyone is good; there is good in everything however infinitesimal. I yAm such a wonderful la la la mu'sick' lover who finds good in every music director's output" democratic follower.
Discriminating fans of MSV, IR, ARR and other high-level MDs of the world, unite against such mediocrity promoters!
krishnasamy in Mahanadhi oru nalalvanukku kedaikka vENdiya adhE mariyAdhai madhippu ingE kettavanukkum kedaikkudhE.
I have always wondered at the precise capture of the anguish of high-level performers there by Kamal - it was not just about samooga nanmai, criminals there by Kamal. It also probably captures his agony at being praised by people who would be silagichufying nAttAmai vijayakuamr's ferfrmance in the same breath.
I think that's what at work here - edhaiyO oNNai pArAttiyE AgaNumnu silarukku oru undhudhal irukku(I call it the Ra.Parthiban instinct). So, they'll accept lesser standards just so that they can show themselves as nAn ellAthaiyum pArAttaREn pAru. And the worst part is they flaunt it as a virtue

'I am fair' is precisely to incite people, reducing the 'informed' opinion to unfounded 'unfairness'. Isn't this truly bitter on part of 'fair' people than frankness shown on basis of coordinates of the presupposed 'unfair' lot?

Wow! Exactly you read my mind Plum!

What I wanted to express, you expressed it clearly. I am also thinking on the same lines, "that among the current crop of music directors, he is the best, consistent and so on". There itself comes the compromise. If at all any comparison has to be made, it has to be compared against these legends who have contributed much towards "our" music and how these current crop stand against them in the measure of quality. I would even recommend going back, search diligently from some yesteryear works (not just thamizh) instead of waiting for new audio releases, listen for few days and forget it. If we have the same amount of interest to go back and treasure some old compositions (which we have not heard, there are millions of them) and listen to them as if they are released today, then we will know what we are missing today. The amount of joy we get when we treasure and listen to these old compositions can never be compensated. Atleast please try if you haven't.
Another thing is how today's generation gauge a melody or composition greatly varies from yesterday. If the song is good to ears with some husky vocals, they claim that as a wonderful and world class melody. Melody is much more than that. If you are serious music listener, melody is not just in the tune, it is the impact on you and how it carries your day-to-day life and how they become the part of your life. If we look back at our old age, only songs which will remain with us are the songs which carried us through to our old age, not just these passing cloud melodies. I am saying this for/as a serious music listener who only listen music, when listening music. Definitely this is not applicable to those who listen songs in midst of their other work. I may be preachy, but I somehow feel the current generation music directors has not yet achieved anything musically and we are celebrating too much ahead. Let us wait for another 20 years and see where they are musically, until then let us go back to our favorite composers, but all the best for these youngsters. Let them know what is real composing first of all!
Definitely as you said, we have to weigh our standards and not just go for everything. Plum I am totally with you on your last sentence.
KG, It took some time to understand your quote, as usual at your best.

People have been, are and will continue to be pedantic on music but indirectly questioning one’s taste over music is out of order. We don’t all belong to the same generation; hence one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Prior to his death, Pancham Da was asked, “What do you think of the current trending music?” and he replied to the interviewer, “You have already answered the question... You asked me about the “current trending” music, which itself proves that music today is changing/developing!”

GVP does have his own style... In his early days Rahman Ji too faced some belligerence as the fanatics pounced on him and said he is repetitive. Where are those fanatics now?
Plum, just to clarify, I don't blindly support any Tom, Dick and Harry music director. If I didn't see hope for GVP, I wouldn't be here. Yes I do find the odd Rahman Ji, Harris, Yuvan, GVP song mediocre but choose not to express it... I don't see the point! They all have their pros and cons. I wouldn't defend a MD as much as MUSIC I LIKE (This can be from any of the above mentioned MDs or others that I haven't mentioned). Good music can be delivered by anyone, it's just a matter of clicking with it as a listener. Raaja Saab put it wonderfully in the climax of his recent interview, "I don't provide to them (listeners/fans) but they identify themselves in my music..." and WRT Annakilli he mentions, "I didn't convince anyone to hear Annakilli... My tune is their (listeners/fans) tune, they identify themselves in my tune, that's all!" As an e.g. This can also be said for people/fans who were blown by Vaagai Sooda Va and Yuddham Sei, they just identified themselves in the respected tunes of M. Ghibran and K without being asked to hear it. I liked some songs in Vaagai Sooda Va compared in Rockstar but because I didn't express this cross-examination in the hub, people like you will accuse me of being unbiased. Having a favourite music director doesn't meant anything... It's all about identifying yourself in the music, regardless of MD!
Still haven't quite touched the surface of Raaja Saab's discography but primarily thank the hub for expanding my knowledge on him. Therefore to an extent, I sometimes find there is a flaw in placing IR/ARR as yardsticks. Majority of their works are lifelines for Thamizh music listeners, but even in this age you still have hardcore fans from previous generation who are very underwhelmed by Sainthu, Ennodu Vaa Vaa, CWG, Tyota liva, Nimma Nimma, etc. Does this mean that they are still considered benchmarks?
For every mudhal murai, Rahman Ji has delivered varugirai and for every hai rama, he has delivered a baazi laaga. Times have changed and this changed has been brought by MDs and not by fans but some people like living in their warp and don't consider this point.
To the haters of gvp, he is trying to cater to everyone and is not all noise!
For e.g. The Piano in Mayakam Enna Theme hasn't lost its shine one bit, still holds the emotional quotient it did when I first heard it. People sometimes are too ignorant to acknowledge good works and start passing judgments based on opinions of others.

If you have heard a lot of the current music and still don't click with, then it boils down to taste.

We are not questioning everyone's taste, infact we are trying to understand that. Accepted there is a generation gap, but if you closely see, the issue is the same, even with changing times. But the way we approach the issue is different from our generation to now. This my biggest concern. Let me start with what is the issue then.
Let us step back to few decades to 1950/60s where there were many music directors, right from SM Subbiah Naidu, G Ramanthan, Adi Naryana Rao, R Sudarshanam, S Dakshinamoorthy, S Rajeshwara Rao, T A Kalyanam, T R Pappa, T G Lingappa, S V Venkatraman, MSV-TKR, KVM and many more and every one of them had a unique style. My father (and every one of that generation) would immediately say this is composed by that music director (not just because they already heard that, that was their comments right from the first time they heard).
But when were at your age (in teens and 20s), time was changing already, when IR was ruling the roost, there were many other music directors too right from Shankar Ganesh, Gangai Amaran, S A Rajkumar, Deva, Vidyasagar, Chandrabose and few others. All have done many films as you might know. Just that when we start listening to the prelude we will tell that it is not Ilaiyaraaja (and also lose interest immediately), but we will be unable to tell, if it was Shankar Ganesh, or Gangai Amaran or Deva. The main reason for us to lose interest is most of them only had IR's touch (to fool us), but the lazy interludes and dull orchestration/arrangements will color them off. We were so sharp to identify them. We could distinguish which one is an extra-ordinary work and which one is a clone (china made). It is not that out of pride we are saying this, we wanted you to understand all this. This is the issue I am talking about now. The issue is the same even now, but how you guys approach to this music now is the biggest question and that's where the difference lies.
With due respect to them, you know where the above quoted music directors (of 80s/90s) stand now and I am damn sure there is none who can say he is a huge fan of those music directors. Why? That's the place they deserve. Now what is happening? You don't want to identify the "cloneness" despite you find them. As long as it is good to hear we are fine, that's the tendency now. If you are saying music directors like GVP, Harris et al are having unique style of their own which we cannot find, then we cannot help you. We are only trying to help and guide you as we have already crossed your age and enthusiasm. If you are still going to crown a clone and ask them to lead a music kingdom, then also we are not going to help you. All the songs and theme you have quoted may be good now, but as time passes, you will cross our age and find the truth as the clouds disappear.
The fact that you are still talking about AnnakiLI after 35 years speaks volume of their contribution and definitely there is nothing wrong in placing them as bench mark, as we didn't find anything novel from your music directors. Also I am writing all these big posts just because you are not a 'primary' fan of these music directors. If you are primarily a fan of GVP or Harris or Yuvan or others our posts would not have been made. You are infact a fan of a music director who deserves you as a fan. Since you all have excellent taste in music which expresses yourself as a ARR or IR or MSV fans, just that we want to put you in right direction so that you don't hail the mediocrity (that too very soon). You might not know/understand now, but you will when you cross 40.
If you still want to place your ARR/IR along with these music directors as ARR/IR also has given average numbers like them (like you mentioned) and trying to equate them, definitely we cannot help you, we can only feel sorry about that.
Happy listening!

Regarding RDB's comment, I can certainly understanding what he meant. "Today's music is changing" is completely different than "Today's music is developing". We cannot club "changing/developing" together. They are poles apart. The trend has changed that he has accepted, but whether it was for good or bad, he only knows. I would definitely think that he would not have accepted that it is for good.

There's a definitely Big difference in Quality Between IR/ARR & Deva/Harris/GVPs.
But then how does that make Deva/harris/GVP "Void" quality or generalising fully as mediocres/clones etc.
I can show pretty good number of Yuvan fans and also Harris has his own set of audience for his special bass-filled-guitars.
It has become easy for people to generalize based on their likings/interests(may be warp zone with benchmark already set) and special sense of identifying the clones.
Take recently GVPs thaandavan is just autotune kinda thingy &harris maatran is rehash of his songs pretty poor.Yuvan recent times poor same things applies to ennoda va va from Ir's NEPV.
Harris Samurai,Minnalae,Vaaranam aayiram & Yuvans 7G/Billa/KatrathuTamil etc to sample a few are definitely has their unique Signitures.
Every little contibution from every composer gets its due credit but then identifying reasons by inscribing their own likings/music definitions to slam them off is same as hailing mediocre stuff.Does there exist any template/standard set for "good" music
As far as TN concerned,No offence but still i am asking except Hugely anticipated NEPV,Pithamagan,Virumaandi,Heyraam,Azhagi,I dont see any familier/good IR movie both songs/BGM as a general not as fan in last 10 years but he has composed many many films
I am really wondering whether IR failed to evolve or today current gen taste/approach has gone absurd or IR himself rejecting working with Mainstreamdirectors.but I can see everyone hailing him.points moreover gos like Only ARR/IRR rest all craps/clones and (younggen)people should change way of approach.

I think GVP would feel rather insulted than taking this comment as praise. I don’t think GVP has personally ever dreamt of overtaking his GURU. There can only be one Rahman Ji and no one can take his place. If a certain MD starts getting recognition then it is because he has his own path. He is standing on his two feet, hence the number of project proposals. He’s only 25 and has only done 25 films and the potential to excel is certainly glaring.
V_S Sir,
If the music scene deteriorates (based on individual thinking) when I’m 40, then obviously looking back in time I’m more likely to remember Harris, Yuvan and GVP. BTW Plum, If I supported every MD out there I would name them in this list but because I don’t see consistency in their work then they don’t deserve a place and I haven’t mentioned Ilaiyaraaja because of my lack of exposure to him and because I’m talking about the current crop. I agree the maestro is timeless but here I’m just giving my two cents on the current crop. Rahman Ji equally fits in with current lot because he rejuvenates his sound with every release. He doesn’t have a fixed style, which is a style in itself!
Down the line, even I might be having a healthy discussion (I don’t consider this an argument

)with a junior about the music scene. I might be defending music of my teens/20s i.e. the music I’m currently hearing or might be appreciating the music of his (my junior) generation. It is too early to say and frankly I don’t care. I cannot say where GVP will be in the future, only time will be the real judge. Did anyone predict how many accolades Rahman Ji will receive?
To prove that music liking is a result of individual liking, I’ll express something that may offend fans of Rahman Ji. As much of a diehard Rahman Ji fan I am, I personally think that Harris Jayaraj had a better debut. I’ve heard Minnale more times than Roja but on average Rahman Ji has had a bigger leap towards my liking. The pol pol bit song in Minnale is the best to come out of GVMs filmography and does it have any resemblance to anything before or around that time? No!
It is not only hard for me, but anyone who is asked how they approach music will definitely have countless factors which cannot be reflected in a simple
term or analogy.
I did not intentionally talk about Anakilli, If you saw Raaja Saab’s interview, which I’m sure you did you must have seen him saying that he cannot stand others (GVM or for that matter) praising him directly in front of his face. Hence, he said that all the praise he receives reflects the fact the people identify themselves in his music rather than liking and yes discovering yourself via ones music will automatically make you a –philic towards any MD. I’ll repeat what I said from my previous post, just in case you missed it.

I hadn’t heard of Anakilli until I saw this interview and my first encounter with Raaja Saab was via dubbed versions of Thalapathy and Velu Nayagan. Pardon me but I haven’t really ventured into his discography yet and only know him early 2000s onwards and that too due to his mainstream works.
In regards to the benchmark issue, it wasn’t directed to anyone and it was rhetorical... Yes, there’s no doubt that IR/ARR have set the benchmark but what value does this benchmark have if you have hardcore fans from both troops are criticizing their current material e.g. Nimma nimma and Sainthu sainthu.
If I come across as being naive then so be it, but whatever I’ve said, I really do stand by it!
Back to Pancham Da interview, I’m trying really hard to find that interview on Youtube. My Hindi vocabulary is weak and my translation might not appear as it really stands, but yes only he knows whether he meant “Good” or “Bad”

u r mistake......GVP "worked" with AR as a singer during his childhood days, obviously, since AR turns out to be his maternal uncle, he had access to AR more than others........he did watch AR in his formative years but his official apprenticeship, work stint was with

second, i saw Nerd commenting Mahen as a AR family fan......to all those who dont know yet - GVP's father had divorced AR's sister and their families have parted ways long back........and GVP is staying with his paternal family - hence the hindu name and not islam name.......AR was peeved with decision of GVP's family to desert his sister and has categorically denied entry to GVP or his paternal family into his house.....
GVP is not AR's family but reihana, kathija or amin are, unless proven otherwise.....
Thirdly, its neither a sin to appreciate GVP nor a "favour to TFM"..........its evident, AR, IR and MSV are the benchmarks.....those who disagree, please proceed to next post......other guys are good too, obviously, the amount of creative energy that goes into creating a song is mind boggling , inspite of all gadgets and devices, means - even srikanth deva deserves respect........but respect should not be confused to support.....the peak values of AR,IR and MSV are yet to be touched, lets respect that too........it would be great if GVP can be supported without invoking IR,AR or MSV...........

As music composer G. V. Prakash Kumar crosses a major milestone in his life and career, he slips into rewind mode.
Twenty-five films in a career spanning just about six years is a feat indeed! And G.V. Prakash Kumar has achieved it with élan. “It hasn’t been an easy journey so far, yet it’s been worth it,” the composer strikes a serious note. With Thaandavam, whose audio release will be on Independence Day, Prakash’s oeuvre touches the quarter century mark. Life and career may have been a roller-coaster ride for him, but the youngster has braved challenges and turned up trumps at every juncture to reach the milestone. If the music of Veyyil, his debut album, drew the connoisseur and the commoner alike, films such as Aadukalam catapulted him to even greater heights.
Friends first
Prakash and director Vijay come together for the fourth time for Thaandavam, after Kireedom, Madarasapattinam and Deiva Thirumagal. “There’s going to be a fifth too — Vijay is going to direct actor Vijay for the first time and I’ll be making the music for it,” Prakash chips in chirpily. “Director Vijay and I are good friends, comfortable in each other’s company. I share similar vibes with directors Vetrimaran and Selvaraghavan also.”
After Deiva Thirumagal, which showcased the story of a soft, sensitive human being, the successful trio of Vikram, Vijay and Prakash Kumar will be returning with an action-packed Thaandavam. So will the scintillating melodies of the Madarasapattinam and DT kind take a backseat in Thaandavam? “Not at all, though it’s an action film, all the five songs in Thaandavam will be soft and romantic,” says Prakash. “I’ve used the piano for the theme music and including two tiny pieces we have eight tracks.”
The trailer of Thaandavam is just out and the music doesn’t exactly convey that it’s going to be action all the way. “Yeah, for the teaser I’ve gone with the old school. But the film per se will reverberate with stylish action music,” is the enthusiastic reply. “The responsibility is immense and I’m working hard.”
Singer Alisa, the daughter of Loy (of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio), croons in Tamil for the first time, in Thaandavam. Will we get to listen to Vikram, the singer, like we did in DT? “In DT ‘Ore Oru Oorukkulae,’ for example was a song that involved fine emotions. Only Vikram could do it. But Thaandavam is different. All the same, Vikram loves the album, and told me that the songs are some of the best he’s performed for,” Prakash is pleased.
Strangely, after he got into music the jingles way, Prakash went to Baradwaj with his show reel, and went on to work for his films, such as Autograph. “Mr. Rahman (that’s how he refers to his uncle) was looking out for a programmer when my grandma (A.R. Rahman’s mother) told him about me. That was how I joined him later,” he says and adds, “I’ve matured a lot in these six years. I can handle situations more calmly than I did in the past.” Prakash was in his teens when Veyyil happened. He’s 25 now.
Does being the nephew of A.R. Rahman add to the pressure? “Sure it does, because people assume that career has been a cakewalk for me, while the truth is very different. Yet the positive side is I grew up in a milieu filled with music.”
Wedding bells
Wedding bells will ring for Prakash and Saindhavi in the New Year. “We’ve been together since our school days. I had quit school and got into music, and life was a question mark. We were nobodys then. So expectation from each other is nil. She’s has been with me all along. We’ve known each other for 11 years now.”
What are his working hours like?
“I work through the night till dawn.”
But what happens next year?
“Probably I’ll have to talk to Saindhavi,” he guffaws.
The last time I met Prakash along with director Vijay before the release of DT, Prakash was silent, allowing Vijay to do most of the talking. Hence this joie de vivre is a surprise. “I take time to open up to people,” he laughs.
Equations matter
The melody, ‘Oru Paadhi Kadhavu Neeyadi,’ was composed on a flight. “Vijay and I were flying to Kerala, when very casually we began discussing the song. Muthukumar had penned the lyric for Madarasapattinam, but it hadn’t been used. So we decided to revive the same for Thaandavam. And as we got talking about the sequence the music evolved. In fact, I structured the entire song on the flight. And the best thing about Vijay is he understands my line of thought as far as music goes,” smiles Prakash. So unlike the usual practice of the lyricist supplying the verses to the tunes the composer gives him, three of the songs in Thaandavam have been set to music after the lines were written.
Destination Mumbai
Many of Prakash’s films have made it to the award podia at various levels. “I’m happy about it. But expectation from fans has increased manifold and living up to it every time is a challenge,” is the response. Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, which has been drawing attention on the festival circuit, marks Prakash’s debut in Hindi cinema. He has composed the background score for the film. … Wasseypur 2 has just been released.
The peppy ‘D...d...d...Dance Karle…’ from Joker seems to be Prakash’s favourite at the moment – it is his ringtone. He’s the composer of the Akshay Kumar - Sonakshi Sinha film.

kELviyaum kEttuttu badhilaiyum nIngaLE solli irukkIngaLE.
Big gap between IR/ARR/MSV and the modern pretenders. You admitted as much, right. So , get this. IR/ARR/MSV - excellence. A big gap between excellence and mediocrity. And that mediocrity is what these ones are.
Problem is - I have observed this before - lack of understanding of the word "mediocre". The word mediocre comes from the base "medium". Medium is a word we are all understand stands between high and low. That is, average. Mediocre means average. Average is not equal to void quality.
But the problem is people routinely interpret mediocre as "void" or "poor" as this person here has done.
Afterall, nobody is claiming MSV-IR-ARR-YSR or MSV-IR-ARR-HJ or MSV-IR-Deva-ARR are we?
Why dont we make that claim? Because we know we cannot. Until Rahman, every generation had the top tamil MD absolutely top in the indian scene(or atleast close to since MSV had much more tougher competitors in the hindi scene than IR or ARR). This is not the case with GVP or HJ or YSR - and there is a reason for it. They are mediocre. In other words, average, not outstanding like Rahman or Raja or MSV or even KVM, who I place below MSV.
Cant we accept this much?
Heck, this is a point Maddy himself has made before although probably the identity of the ppl making the same point now has lead to him taking the opposite stance.
Sunil _ I repeat - if you praise plastic as much as Gold, your praise for Gold will lose its value.

See this is another problem. You (does not mean just you) are trying to evaluate a Maestro (from just the response of Maestro fans) and his benchmark with a 30 second teaser and not by his large body of work in the past 35 years or atleast not from his latest works like SRR or ASK (including BGM, this aspect is completely ignored conveniently to safeguard these music directors). Moreover we don't even know how these 30 seconds will turn out to be, yet we want to include that. On the other hand, you are trying to support these music directors unconditionally for their infinitesimally smaller work. Don't you see some hurriedness in your posts? I don't blame you, we were also like that. What I thought would be an interesting discussion is turning out to be a futile exercise.

Anyway, I don't want do disturb your interests or sentiments. Atleast it was nice to know the viewpoints from this generation about music.

GVP has acknowledged Rahman Ji as his Guru in many interviews and I don’t need to provide links as there many that you should just find with a click. If Rahman Ji laid the foundation for him, then doesn’t that make him his (one of his) Guru. Just to iterate what Mahen said, please follow this link

Our fellow hubber, sureshmechnit has asked GVP
I have seen your name credited under "Additional Programming" on AR's Swades CD. What does an Additional Programmer do? Do you also give your tracks to someone else for Additional Programming? Do you arrange and program all the layers of all of your tracks yourself? Asked by: suresh
To which GVP replied
additional programmer also is a co programmer of the song they do add layers of keys or rhythm in the song and have a contribution to the song ... i played as a programmer for yuhi chala and yeh tara
There are various other questions, which are trivial.

This whole palaver started with my thoughts on Maattrraan, where I was only giving credit where it’s due. I did not in any form place the current crop with the dignified veterans.

I never denied this... Anyway what’s bugging is not even related to all this... I am an IR fan and don’t want to take this on IR vs ARR tangent.
Raaja translates to King and Rahman Ji is also known as Thalaivar...
This is just for the odd IR fan and not the entire bunch; please don’t come to a conclusion that I’m being judgmental of any particular hubber and I would directly refer to that hubber if I had an issue.
There certainly are IR fans that get pleasure out of bashing ARR, i.e. calling him mediocre, too electronic and too noisy. Now the same people (IR fans) want to place ARR in the same equation as IR when comparing the current lot to the older lot. What kind of double standards is this? You either support him from day one or don’t support him at all, please don’t mask yourself with a pretension to praise a MD just for that sake.
If certain IR fans claim that ARR is mediocre and then consider him gold, then what’s the purpose of dividing Gold and Iron. Don’t make the slightest bit of sence!

I liked Sainthu Sainthu but haven't expressed any single view on the song as the full song hasn't released. If you remember I have then please provide to that post of mine. As you rightly said, you cannot judge a song based on a teaser. Please don't mistake my support for me being defensive. The current crop haven't reached a standard where they can be defended against these veterans. I'm only expressing my support Sir and I don't know why people think that I'm comparing.

And Sir, can we stop bringing IR and other veterans in to the scene. The whole sound scape of recording, live instruments etc. has changed very drastically and it's not fair. We can't blame people that ignored SRR and we can't be judgmental on their taste. I expressed my views on Devulle Mechindi to which both you and plum were more than satisfied. You should be knowing who started referencing IR into this discussion. Again I know your contribution to IR thread. I don't have any doubts on you about IR or ARR. I just mentioned IR only because you (again not just you, you can read when this topic started and who all dragged him), who take lot of interest to complain on a 30 second teaser (as 'mokkai' teaser) and conclude now itself, but they didn't even want to (take time to listen to or) appreciate a word on Maestro recent works like SRR, ASK and so on. On the other hand, their sky high praise and support for this thread's gentleman (and other contemporaries) for their mediocre works makes me want to understand what this generation like and does not like. As I said, all my posts were only for serious listeners, if not definitely these would not have come. That's why I expressed saying, 'atleast I came to know the views of this generation about music'.

Only reason I cited you because of the highlighted reasons above about "Sainthu Sainthu". If you have and are confident about IR's works, I am not sure why you had to mention this explicitly expressing doubts about his benchmark, just based on other fans' opinion.
I think it's better to stop this discussion, as you said it is going beyond what we wanted/aimed to discuss and we now know each others views. Let's move on.

There have been some IR fans who have had doubted IR recently as well, the other fans will just come and blow certain topics out of proportion. The benchmark issue was for them (fans who doubt IR/other fans) to counteract not for staunch fans like you, but thanks for your time. The clowns have decided to keep quiet and watch the show instead.

Music Review by Karthik - milliblog
Rahul Nambiar confidently powers the catchy Yaaradi mohini, while Haricharan does the honors equally well in the pleasant Oru paadhi kadhavu that reminiscences Rahman’s En kaadhale. Alyssa and Marie’s Will you be there is gorgeously tuned pop, while Uyirin uyire, with fantastic vocals by Saindhavi, unnecessarily reuses Pookkal pookum’s overall style. Anicham poovazhagi is an enthusiastically sung, thoroughly enjoyable folk’ish number, while Shiva thaandavam is merely showy. Prakash impresses with his singing in the short Adhigaalai pookkal and its instrumental variant, A poem for you is a sweet listen too. High on melody, Thaandavam is a poised effort from GVP!

Nice article..
“I don’t train my students to be professional assassins”
The American marched inside the posh Residency Towers conference hall in Chennai, accompanied by Vikram and AL Vijay at the back. Hadn't been for the stick he carried you couldn’t possibly believe the fact that he is blind. Daniel Kish, an exponent in human echolocation and an inspiration behind the plot of Thaandavam, had come down to honor the team on request of UTV Motion Pictures.
Dhananjayan Govind, the South Chief of the leading production house gave a formal welcome address and handed over the responsibility of introducing the guest of honor, Daniel Kish to Vikram and Vijay.
AL Vijay, generally a soft spoken man, was too enthusiastic in introducing the echolocation specialist. "After completing Deiva Thirumagal, Vikram said that we must do another film. I already had a script, which had a blind man going for revenge as the crux. Vikram said he liked it but it lacked logic. So I told him we will find logic soon. Few days later we both were discussing the script again and Nirav Shah was with us too. After hearing the story, he immediately took out his iPad and showed us about a visually challenged American who could do almost everything a normal man could do. That's how we came to know about Daniel Kish and thus we got the confidence to proceed with this story," narrated Vijay about the story behind the making of Thaandavam.
Later, Vijay wanted to meet Daniel and study him. But all he knew about Dan was that he was an American. That's when everything started falling into place. Later, for a completely different purpose he came in contact with a social worker, Jayashree, who personally knew Daniel. Through her the director got his appointment and went to Dan’s house in California. He stayed with him for a couple of days to get to know him. "After a couple of hours of conversation, I completely forgot that he is blind. He lives alone on his palatial bungalow, he goes for walks, goes cycling and does everything that makes us not believe that his eyes cannot see," exclaimed Vijay.
The director showed a video of Daniel Kish and his students playing basketball and going for treks in risky mountains. It was truly inspiring to see the clip and as Vijay said it did feel as if we are not exploiting our brain to the fullest.
Vikram again threw light on some of his experiences with Dan and spoke about the film too. “The entire team has worked their fullest for this film. Still, you can only see AL Vijay in all the departments. The entire product is his creativity and ideas, just the hands are different. It might be me on screen, but whatever you see in me is only Vijay’s actions. So, if the film comes out as a super duper hit, which I don’t doubt, the complete credit goes to him,” praised Vikram, turning Vijay pink.
Finally, the hero of the event Daniel was called upon to speak a few words. He rose from his seat, ticked his tongue twice and stood exactly in front of the mike, showing no signs of blindness.
He is the President of World Access for the Blind, through which he has developed a huge network of people all over the world, whom he has trained in human echolocation, to spread the skill to all the visually challenged people.
Dan said “What we are able to do isn’t important. What we have been able to teach is what makes the difference. So we at World Access for the Blind aim at that. We help our students to find freedom in life. We help them in doing what they want to do. Many of our students play basketball and soccer.” Then he jocularly said that he hasn’t trained his students to be professional assassins yet, obviously referring to the film.
He has also done a cameo in the film. About his experience, he said, “It wasn’t very tough for me as I was just being myself in the film. But still, I took it as a very big responsibility, even though it is not my favorite. My students and my solitude come first in my favorites list.”
The hall resounded with hearty applause after his inspiring speech. Later, Dan spent time with his newly formed fans and patiently answered all the questions they threw, irrespective of the repetitions.

Ajay and GVP haters pls take note..
It’s official UTV Motion Pictures Thaandavam which has music by GV Prakash has topped the charts. Aircheck radio report for the week for the top Tamil album has put Thaandavam at No.1 for the last week.
GV Prakash has pulled off a coup of sorts as he and Thaandavam album has replaced Gautham Menon directed Neethane Enn Ponvasantham which has music by Ilayaraja.
The songs from the film “Oru Paadhi Kadhavu..” and “Yaaradi Mohini…” seems to be topping the charts. One of the major attraction of the film is the melodious music composed by GV.
Meanwhile UTV as a part of their promotions has started airing three songs from the film on popular Tamil music channels. AL Vijay’s picturisation of the songs is being appreciated and will ensure recall value among the viewers.

peerusaa pudhusaa onnum illa... unusual revenge story engiraangalE... what is unusual? that the hero is blind? or that the revenge takes place in London?
maybe its my fault for having a decent expectation on the movie, esp taking into consideration his earlier two.

nothing is really wrong with it and there are some moments, but otherwise...
Vikram looks bad. Old...
in fact he looked totally out of place in the wedding scene.
also the usual enthu is missing and he does not impress.
amy jackson is gorgeous. funny to see all white people dancing and singing in thamizh

anushka is ... taller

appears too serious
laksmi rai has a limited role
santhanam appears in the London segments... claps and whistles at his entry

"thala" is mentioned to claps from a lady seated in front of me.
couple of songs are good, tho one song reminded me of pookkal pookum. bgm was suffice.

Since the introduction of semi-automatics in Tamil film, ellorum kushiyA kuthichu kuthichu suttukittirukAngga.
I recall the first time we saw a semi-auto in Tamil film was Kamal's Sattam, which I am willing to bet is a Walther PPK, James Bond's weapon of choice (used again in Vikram). And its real (in sattam, in one scene when it runs out of bullet, the slide pushes back exposing the barrel). Exciting for us kids then having fedup seeing the likes of Major carrying those dreadful revolvers. And in Hey Ram, Kamal brought in that, oh-so-gorgeous Luger (incidentally, this was the gun that completes the 7 in OO7 logo, Kamal/Bondfan thingy must be investigated).
End of dig.

Review: Thandavam is a damp squib
http://www.rediff.com/movies/review/...b/20120928.htm
Director A L Vijay has been quoted as saying that he read the script of a blind man exacting revenge to Vikram, and though the star liked it, he said it lacked logic. Vijay promised to re-work the script.
If Thandavam (UTV Motion Pictures) is the re-worked, logical, script, then one shudders to think what the original was like.
The film doesn't start off too badly. Kenny (Vikram), a blind man who plays for the church choir in London [ Images ] is so gentle that he wouldn't hurt an ant (literally). But he ends up killing people in a very cold-blooded manner.
He is squired around by a bumbling taxi-driver (Santhanam) who manages to bring in some laughs but vanishes from the scene for long periods of time.
Meantime, there's Sarah Vinayagam (Amy Jackson), half British and half Thamizh, who has been crowned Miss London and does lots of "charitable work." She meets Kenny and falls for him.
At the other end of the spectrum is Detective Superintendent Veerakathi Pillai (Nasser), who plays games in his spare time and heads a British force that seems to bumble around helplessly most of the time as it tries to solve the murders.
The first half of the screenplay is supposed to build up the suspense. It introduces characters for whose existence there seems to be no logical reason.
You're still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, just to know what sort of back-story Kenny has. And in one respect your wait is rewarded in the form of Meenakshi (Anushka Shetty).
Kenny's past as an intelligence officer Shiva Kumar with his friend, Sharath (Jagapathy Babu) by itself is lacklustre, but his life with wife Meenakshi (though astoundingly devoid of commonsense) is fun to watch and quite sweet.
She is dignified and beautiful. The song Oru Paadhi Kadhavu Neeyadi, has been well picturised and G V Prakash's music is melodious.
Despite this, it's difficult to forgive the sheer stupidity of a well-educated eye doctor, who lives and practices in New Delhi [ Images ], but still believes that her husband, whom she lives with on a daily basis, is a sub-inspector!
Once this section is done with, the tedium sets in. Yes, this is a tale of government secrets, treason and betrayal but these are just words, for there's no rhyme or reason for most of the plot-twists.
Shiva Kumar's logic for refusing to inform the British Government of impending terrorist attacks is so ridiculous that you gape in amazement. There's an elaborate set-up which is supposed to have been done with the finesse of Mission Impossible, but which just ends up looking tacky.
Kenny/Shiva's training by the remarkable Daniel Kish who uses human Echolocation to train his students, is shown only for a few moments; there's practically no mention of how Kenny re-trains himself as a martial arts expert now that he's lost his sight.
Vikram manages to be the saving grace of the movie, even if he looks haggard and tired most of the time.
Anushka is a breath of fresh air, and you wish she'd been given more screen space. Amy Jackson looks gaunt; Santhanam looks uncomfortable. Nasser looks like he could have done more but again, the screenplay gives him no space. Jagapathy Babu acquits himself quite well under the circumstances.
Nirav Shah's cinematography is sparkling when it showcases London, but the movie's screenplay drags it down.
G V Prakash's numbers barely pass muster and sound like his previous songs; they're inserted so randomly in the movie that except for one, they don't make much sense and hamper the pace.
Manohar Varma, who has choreographed the action sequences, and Daniel Kish himself, who provided the inspiration for the film, are the ones who deserve genuine kudos.
This dance of fury is a damp squib with no logic; go with extremely low expectations.

The problem with Thaandavam is that what ever we (I) expected from the movie after watching the trailer was exactly there in the movie. And we have seen plenty of movies in the past which shares the same scenes/plot. And ALV didnt use the echolocation concept to create any excitement for the viewers. Rather it was shown as if it was a separate track altogether. Murugadoss, in spite of the Memento inspiration, had used the Memory loss thing well. No such brilliance here.
On the positives, Nirav Shah deserves a special mention. GVP's music was good in parts.

Here is a POSITIVE review...
http://www.tamilkey.com/thandavam-mo...ne-review.html
Vikram is back with a bang! Returning as a silent but deadly blind revenge seeking hero, he takes centre screen to kick butt. Infusing a credible premise with honesty, and peppering the film with tender moments, director Vijay creates an engaging drama that you’re happy to emotionally invest in.
Technically, Thaandavam is one of the best films to have emerged out of Kollywood in a long time. Add to that some peppy melodies from GV Prakash and comedy that goes with the narration makes it entertaining.
The film is set in London, with Thanjavur and New Delhi coming only in flashbacks. It opens with Kenny (Vikram), a Pianist in a church and a blind man who is on a vendetta mission in London, which has been ravaged by a series of bomb blasts.
During the night, Kenny becomes an obsessed killing machine and travels in a taxi driven by a crazy MGR fan Sathyan (Santhanam) and goes on a killing spree murdering mostly white men. There is more suspense in the form of a mystery woman Geeta (Lakshmi Rai) who helps Kenny in London.
Kenny meets up with the glamorous Sarah (Amy Jackson) a beauty queen turned model. Constantly on his trail is Veerakathi (Nasser) a London police officer who suspects Kenny’s involvement in the bloody murders that rocks the city. In a flashback mode it is revealed that Kenny is actually a top RAW officer Sivakumar whose buddy was Sarath (Jagapathy Babu), his colleague in the intelligence department. Siva marries Meenakshi (Anushka) an eye surgeon and was leading a peaceful life till fate intervened cruelly and turned his life upside down.
It is Vikram and him alone who diverts your attention from the film’s little logical script flaws and spellbinds you with an endearing act that is Thaandavam’s biggest strength. Exuding menace with his expressive eyes and body language and the tiniest of tics to make flesh-and-blood characters out of Sivakumar IPS and Kenny the blind man seeking revenge, Vikram is simply terrific. Vijay with the help of Daniel Kish, an echolocation expert has made Vikram’s blind assassin role credible and awesome.
Jagapathy Babu is a refreshing and welcome change in a pivotal character role that’s crucial to the film’s plot. Amy Jackson is camera friendly and Anushka in a matured role is good. Santhanam is the comedy scene stealer as a London taxi driver. Lakshmi gives her best in the small role.
Technically it is Vijay’s best film with superior eye-catching camera by Nirav Shah and peppy melodies by GV Prakash with ‘Oru Paadhi Kadhavu’ being the pick of the lot. The action choreography by Manohar Verma is awesome especially the fast paced fight scene when a blind Vikram is attacked by six foreigners in a London park.
On the downside, logical loopholes are quite obvious. Here’s a little sample -An intelligent doctor Anushka thinking that her husband who goes to office in suit and drives a high end SUV is an inspector or SI and recommends to the police commissioner for his promotion is hard to digest. The London police is made to look like a set of idiots. The film is a tad too long at 156 minutes, and at times taxes the viewer’s patience especially the ‘Roja’ like village wedding scenes.
Please note inspite of some gruesome killings in the plotline there is no blood or gore, hardly any smoking scenes, no drinking scenes or even an item number. For an audience numbed by predictable Kollywood potboilers week after week, Thaandavam might take some time to settle into; go in with an open mind and enjoy the ride.
Well done Vijay and UTV for making a film that can be viewed by family audiences.
Verdict- Good

but looks too aged for kalyanam , kaadhal and duets. Nirav's camera is the biggest plus for the movie. Liked Yaaradi nee mohini song.

Watched the movie last night with zero expectations. Needless to say, I had read most of the reviews in this thread.

The movie was entertaining and faired much better than some of the recent releases, IMHO.

I can't get it : the "Thandavam" part is missing.
What could have been a good thriller for Indian Audience, was spoiled by the Roja + Mouna Ragam + hum app ke hai kaun gimmicks. They thought it would work, but sorry [sorry to those who liked those episodes] was quite irritating. "Twist" was wrongly interrupted in the moive. Not going deep into the script [kudos to Vijay for coming up with one, and me just sitting and writing this], Thandavam could have been better this way :
1st half
Blind Man (redo costume) => myterious murders => confused Taxi driver suspect / witness => smart interogative officer => Dare Devil style fight interval block => (length approx 1hr)
2nd Half
Flash Back (just show the love between strangers turned couples - max 5 scences are enough) => Raw episode with some rescue stunts in the likes of Expendebles => Twists/death => elaborate training on echolocation => Climax [not the Agni Natchram type, just here its the alarm & more men needed - can't imagine [SPOILER] coming out alone in a warehouse] => (length approx 1hr)
Take away :
Amy Jackson + Unecessary Village character (list is huge) => songs (not that its not good, just not needed, they make you use the F word each time one pops up) => theme music => unecessary MASS factor of the Hero => London => Santhanam's so called jokes - his character could have been like the one acted by Jamie Foxx in Coleteral.
Overall Thandavam is watchable, but leaves you empty.

Watched second time yesterday ... AL.Vijay has tried a new script on this one ... and going by his standards :
- kadhal after marriage + coffee scenes : mouna raagam
- revenge story with flashbacks here and there + first night scene : vikram wants to tell her something, but she says the same thing before him : ghajini
- marriage scene + bomb blast + blind man taking revenge : rendu (same anushka in those 2 bomb blasts !)
- best friend turning villan : all KV.Anand movies
- shirtsless fight scene : all surya movies
- vikram cheated on that pen drive matter + london police searching for him : dhaam doom
but movie is entertaining anyway

I went to see the film with "lots of expectation" since it is a Vikram movie, but was slightly disappointed!
The movie had lots of Technical errors, flawed screen play. The only positive thing about the film was vikram.
-ves
1) British police (supposed to be the best in the world) were made to look like "clowns"
2) Unnecessary songs
3) All the shots in London were around River Thames, Piccadilly Circus
4) Vikram looked too Old for romance and songs , they should have hired Rajni's make up man
Despite all these -ves, the film is watchable!

Thaandavam - above average
After reading mixed reviews for the movie I wasnt sure whether to watch it or not but I dont regret watching it. The movie turned out to be better than expected.
1st hero: Vikram is running a solo show here outshining the other casts with his great style of acting. One of the reasons why I like to watch Vikram movies is he does a lot of homework and prepares him to get in the character. The result is convincing in the movies.
The scenes between anushka and Vikram was good too, but I hate the village scenes. Esp Saranya mohan was irritating. Jagapathi Babu debuted well in Madrasi and does a great job again in Thaandavam. Santhanam is less funny. Amy Jackson is not as bad as I expected, she will always have some haters, but if she likes to act in indian movies and has talents idgaf abt her ethnicity.
2nd hero: GV Prakash has done well with songs as well as BGM, his partnership with AL Vijay pays off for the third time.
3rd hero: AL Vijay, I havent seen Madrasipattinam and will never, but I do like his other movies Kiredom and Deivathirumagal and now this one.
