Prashant is doing "double action". Don't think its a multi hero subject as its a re-entry film for him. I guess he will be present in all the "frames".

No, not really. It's just Pooja Chopra (Miss India 2009) and Divya Parameswaran (from all those adverts) as the pairs to each Ponnar and Shankar.
Sneha plays the brothers' sister, Bhanu's there in a song and Kushboo and co are paired opposite other actors.

Publicity campaign has started, with Prashanth (as usual) bloating - "60,000 girls auditioned for the female lead roles".
Prashanth is a picture of excitement as he discusses his soon-to-be-released magnum opus Ponnar Shankar with Malathi Rangarajan
All of a sudden, actor Prashanth's camp is a beehive of activity. Ponnar Shankar, his home production, directed by dad Thyagarajan, has been scheduled for a March release and publicity campaigns are on at a feverish pitch. “It's the culmination of two years of diligence, excluding a year of research and another of storyboarding and planning. Having gone about the task without ado is proving to be our strong point because the promotional blitzkrieg we've begun to unleash as we gear up for the grand entry, is creating quite a ripple,” Prashanth sounds elated. “Mammoth is the epithet that describes PS best,” he adds.
At a time when filmmakers are struggling to make viable projects, here's a production team that has gone in for a historical on a mind-boggling scale and is extremely confident about its result! Touted as the “most expensive film in recent times,” it is based on M. Karunanidhi's well-known literary work on the warrior brothers, Ponnar and Shankar. And Prashanth plays a dual role, in keeping with the trend of twin-role tales that Tamil cinema now abounds in. “PS will be different from everything that's been associated with on-screen historical forays. That goes for the dual role themes you mention. Even earlier, in Jeans, I've played two characters. That isn't the point. But I wish to reiterate that PS will be a rare experience for viewers,” he avers.
M. Karunanidhi, whose oeuvre of films in the genre is remarkable, suggested the story of Ponnar-Shankar to the father and son. “He also took charge of the script and dialogue,” says Prashanth. Production, screenplay and direction are Thyagarajan's. “A few filmmakers have attempted the subject before but without success. Personally, I feel privileged to have enacted the lives of two legendary heroes, who are considered demigods.”
The film is set in 1000 A.D. much before the time of the Mughals and the British. “Ponnar and Shankar are still deified in the Southern belts of Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode and the neighbouring areas. People living beyond Chingleput know a lot about Ponnar-Shankar,” Prashanth informs.
CELEBRITY CAST
The tours de force of PS are plenty — the luminaries in the cast, for instance. Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Napoleon, Nasser, Raj Kiran, Vadivelu, Riyaz Khan, Sneha, Seetha, Khushboo, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan … you name them, they are there! Hence it's surprising that Thyagarajan has gone in for debutantes to play heroines — model Divya Parameswaran and Miss India 2009 Pooja Chopra. “We needed two beautiful girls who resemble each other enough to play sisters and also pass off as princesses. Divya and Pooja were chosen from among 60000 faces from all over the country,” explains Prashanth. A mind-boggling selection drive! “Sure, it was,” he nods.
Any given scene includes around 15 artists, besides Ponnar and Shankar, who are together throughout. An incredibly tough proposition! “True, but even the actors who walked in with scepticism were convinced when they watched dad's work on the sets.” Tackling a celebrity cast and their date clashes couldn't have been easy. “It wasn't. But the meticulous preparation helped. Every schedule was planned at least three months ahead,” he says. PS has been filmed in opulent sets, erected in Kerala, Karnataka and Rajasthan, besides Tamil Nadu.
“Working under dad's direction is an amazing experience,” says the son. With every passing year Prashanth's adoration for his ‘appa' seems to be growing. “Naturally, anyone handling so many things at the same time would lose his cool. Not him,” he defends.
THE DUO'S NEXT
The duo of director Thyagarajan and hero Prashanth is returning after a hiatus. Their last outing was the commercially successful Shock. But now they plan to come back with a bang with two releases in quick succession — Mambattiyaan should follow PS.
Prashanth, a wizard on the computer from his early days, and also trained in VFX, has set up his own state-of-the-art studio and has supervised the entire visual effects for PS.
Muthuraj's artwork and Shaji Kumar's cinematography should be the other accentuating aspects, and of course, the music of Ilaiyaraja.
Does Prashanth have duets? “Definitely, I do. How can you even think I will not be romancing my heroines,” he shoots back with a guffaw.
A leviathan, literally
The fight sequence shot in Perambalur, near Tiruchi, went on for 28 days with 30000 junior artists as soldiers, and 3000 horses!
Again in Warangal, when another huge action scene was filmed, the place was a veritable war zone. “Moving the actors from one place to another and meeting their food and stay requirements was like taking an entire town of people with us,” smiles Prashanth.
While carting heavy weapons and set properties all the way along with thousands of people, several problems are bound to crop up. “No, thankfully nothing untoward happened,” Prashanth heaves a sigh of relief.

I do expect this to be a step up from the usual garbage from Kalaignar's stock, most recently Paasakiligal, Uliyin Osai, Pen Singam and Ilaignan.
....but can we trust Prashanth to do any justice??? - who has been blurting out rubbish claiming '60,000 actressses auditioned for the lead roles', and likening the film to 'Troy & Gladiator' haha

Just read the blog on Ponnar Shankar. The story doesn't seem interesting at all. All the characters seem to be commiting suicide at the end and they're termed as courageous deaths?
Plus, the story on the blog says that Ponnar Shankar are land owners. But Prashanth and Co look like members of the royal family?? Err...am I reading the right story?

starting of a news in thatstamil :

Ending is ambiguous about the fate of the brothers.. As far as courageous death is concerned, it is something Roman generals did when they wanted to give up their life. Give the sword to the most trusted soldier and embrace him with the sword held forward. If you had seen/read julius caesar - Brutus meets his fate thus.
The intrigue aspect is the feud between families and the story of nellian kodan.

Galatta Review!!
Prashanth's boyish charm has always won over the gals and he was quite the rage. Though he has done many intense roles, it is his lover-boy image that stays in our mind always. After a short gap, Prashanth is back with a double bang now! The actor has been working for the last four years on the magnificent magnum opus. Newcomers Pooja Chopra and Divya Parameshwaran are the heroines. The movie has been adapted from a book written by Kalaignar Dr. M. Karunanidhi. Thiagarajan, who will leave no stone unturned when it comes to making movies for his son, has gone the extra mile for Ponnar Shankar, which he has also directed.
Historic Facts: Ponnar and Shankar, who became rulers of Ponni Valanadu in medieval Tamil Nadu, are credited with saving their people from an invasion. They were the twin sons of Nellian Kodan and his wife Thamarai. Their bravery has stood the test of time and they are revered and worshiped as Guardian Gods in several villages where their story forms an integral part of local folklore.
About Kalaignar's novel: Kalaignar’s historical novel 'Ponnar Sankar' is about two brave brothers (Ponnar and Sankar) of Kong Ponnaru Nadu (present districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Karur, and parts of Tiruchi and Madurai). The novel has a perfect storyline, fit to be made into a grand film. It narrates the bravery of these brothers and their camaraderie.
Ponnar Shankar also has a huge star cast which includes Sneha, Ponvannan, Jayaram, Khushboo, Prakashraj, Napoleon, Riaz Khan, Prabhu, Rajkiran and Vijayakumar. A two minute trailer of Ponnar Shankar has already taken Kollywood by storm, creating curiosity among the audience and critics alike. After almost 40 years, Ponnar Shankar will be among the first historic films to be made in Tamil and interestingly this is the second time Prashanth is playing the role of twin on screen, after Jeans.
Who is in it?
Prashanth and of course Prashanth, as the heroic Ponnar and Shankar; well-trained courageous warriors, who is ready to take on any army single-handedly.
Kushboo as Thamarai Nachiar, apart from being bold and hardworking she is also the proud mother of Ponnar and Shankar.
Jayaram as Nellian Kodan, a not-so-courageous father/husband, who always thinks good for others.
Rajkiran as Raaki Annan (alias Aasaan), the brave guru of Ponnar and Shankar.
Prakashraj as the crooked minded Manthiappan, who has a vendetta against Thamarai's family.
Napolean as King Thalaiyoor Kaali, a clean hearted person who falls in the trap of Manthiappan.
Sneha as the courageous Arakkani, the only sister of Ponnar and Shankar.
Vijayakumar as Periyamalai Gounder, the king who is ready to sacrifice anything (even his family) to save his dignity.
Pooja Chopra and Divya Parameshwaran as Muthaagi and Pavalaagi, the gorgeous daughters of Chinnamalai Gounder (Ponvannan).
What is it about?
Ponnar Shankar has a very complicated story plot! Periyamalai Gounder arranges his daughter Thamarai's wedding with his friend's son Manthiappan. But Thamarai is in love with her childhood friend Nellaiyaan Gounder. Finally after crossing many hurdles Thamarai marries Nellian Kodan despite her father and brother's (Chinnamalai Gounder) wish. This irks Manthiappan who in turn creates enmity between Periyamalai Gounder and his good friend Thalaiyoor Kaali. After their marriage Thamarai decides to leave the kingdom and start her new life in a new place. But before leaving the kingdom Thamarai takes an oath; that is to give birth to two brave sons and get them married to her brother's daughters.
Fast forward; after many years the whole kingdom is in praise for Raaki Annan's two brave disciples, Ponnar and Shankar. They are always ready to face their enemies or to fight against injustice. One day while attending a special puja Ponnar and Shankar (who doesn’t know that Thamarai is their mother) saves Chinnamalai Gounder's two daughters Muthaagi and Pavalaagi. At this point Thalaiyoor Kaali, on the advice of Manthiappan, decides to kidnap Chinnamalai Gounder's wife, son and daughters; and they succeed too. Now again Ponnar and Shankar is back in action to save Gounder's family. After a series of incidents Chinnamalai Gounder decides to give his daughters hands to Ponnar and Shankar. He also decides to meet his long lost sister Thamarai. What will happen when Thamarai's know that her sons are alive? Who is Raaki Annan (watch out for a great flashback sequence here)? What is Manthiappan and Thalaiyoor Kaali's next plan? To know more watch out for Ponnar Shankar!!
The Performance
Prashanth looks great, is credible in his warrior outfits and is all pumped up for the super action blocks. His well-built physique and excellent archery skills are another major highlight of the film. Prashanth has put in lot of effort to make Ponnar and Shankar vibrant which is quite evident on screen. His expressions and body language, especially when both the brothers come together on screen, looks very convincing.
Kushboo and Jayaram have a meaty role to play and they have done it perfectly. Napolean, Ponvannan, Prakashraj and Captain Raj have done their part well. Raj Kiran excels as Aasaan while Vijayakumar overreacts. Sneha looks beautiful on screen but unfortunately she appears only in few scenes. Newcomers Pooja Chopra and Divya Parameshwaran doesn't have a meaty role to play. Though Prabhu appears only in one scene (after the climax), he scores. Surprisingly his diction and voice modulation is perfect than anyone else. Nassar plays a very interesting role (similar to Drona in Mahabaratham) and he excels.
The Techniques
First kudos to Thiagarajan for his wonderful effort and we know that making a quality epic film is not an easy task. The story has all vital elements that make it interesting even in today’s context: there’s the action-packed tale of revenge, there is a romantic part, there are the themes of brotherly love, trickery and deceit, loyalty to one’s family and so much more. Interestingly, the film has two major battle sequences and the crew has reportedly used around 30,000 people and 3,000 horses in the sequence.
The Camera: Shaji Kumar's breath taking visuals is another major plus of the film. His camera angles, especially during the song sequence and the climax battle, are pretty interesting. One song alone had 15,000 dancers and traditional artists from Tamizh Sangamam.
Isaignani's music: Ilaiyaraaja's majestic tunes make the visual more attractive. 'Annanmar Kathai' and 'Kannai Parithen' stands out. However considering the pace of the film, couple of songs could have been shortened or deleted.
Visual Effect: Even before the start of the film producer-director Thiagarajan assured Ponnar Shankar will be a visual treat and it will be remembered as the best historical film ever made. Prashanth himself has supervised the visual effects of this film and whenever Ponnar and Shankar appear on screen together, it's perfect and neat.
Backseat
Dialogues, dialogues and dialogues!!! Though the film is set in Chola period all the characters (expect Prabhu) speaks contemporary Tamil. There are few screenplay lags in the second half and the continuity goes missing. Also the director could have avoided certain flashbacks (like Ponnar Shankar's birth secret), it would have been better if those scenes were narrated in linear format.
The Verdict
Great action, good visuals and not much to complain about technically! After all it's not easy to bring about the pace and raciness of screenplay as Prashanth and Thiagarajan has done here. It is well-packaged and can appeal to moviegoers across genres and regions.
If you are ready to forget some loopholes (which you will hardly find), Ponnar Shankar is a great film to watch (especially on big screen)!

Ponnar Sankar Movie Review Print

Ponnar Sankar - Vintage winner
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 09, 2011]
It is rare that movies are made based on historic novels. For it needs not just huge labour but enough resources. However, Thiyagarajan has brought on screen what is one of popular novels in Tamil - Ponnar Sankar, penned by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
It is a valorous tale about twin brothers, who fought for their motherland. Produced and directed by Thiyagarajan, the movie features Prashanth playing both the characters- Ponnar and Sankar.
A period film demands huge ensemble of star cast, lavish sets and immense research. Taking the game on, Prashanth and Thiyagarajan have managed to come out with a movie that is more a desi version of ‘Brave Heart’.
With story, screenplay and dialogues by Karunanidhi, Thiyagarajan has given them good shape on screen. Thankfully with seasoned artistes in his side, he has passed out in flying colours. Karunanidhi's dialogues are colloquial and touch relevant contemporary political and social issues. There he scores a point.
The movie begins with the wedding of Thamarai (Kushboo), the daughter of King Periyamalaikozhundhu Gounder (Vijayakumar) arranged with Mandhiyappan (Prakashraj), a king of neighbouring country. Enters Nellaiyankondan (Jayaram), Thamarai's lover and he walks away with her.
Her parents disown her and drive her out of their kingdom. While leaving she throws a challenge at her brother Chinna Malaikozhundhu (Ponvannan) that he would come to their doors one day seeking to marry her two sons for his two daughters.
As years go by, Mayavar (Nasser), a chieftain in the village, comes across twin brothers Ponnar and Sankar (both Prashanth), who are students of Rakki (Raj Kiran). Good at heart, Ponnar and Sankar are valorous and they voice for the sufferings of poor.
One day, they save the sisters Muthayi (Pooja Chopra) and Pavalayi (Dhivya Parameshwaran) from death. Both happen to be daughters of Chinna Malaikozhundhu.
Impressed with their valour, their parents agree for their marriage with Ponnar and Sankar. A flashback reveals that Ponnar and Sankar are Thamarai's sons and Rakki had taken them with him to save them from Mandhiyappan when they were born.
Coming to know that Ponnar and Sankar are alive, Mandhiappan hatches a conspiracy and ensures that Kali Mannan (Nepolean) and Thamarai's father help him in killing them.
Eventually a war is fought. The intense battle ensures that good prevails over evil. Watch out there are the likes of Prabhu, Sneha, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan and Seetha among others in the cast.
Seemingly inspired by ‘Apocalypto’ and ‘Brave Hearet’, Thiyagarajan has ensured battle scenes are shot grand and great. The graphics, supervised by Prashanth himself, is highlight of the movie, though at places look amateurish.
Prashanth, who makes his comeback, has done it doubly well. As a proud prince, he pours out right emotions. In romance and battle scenes, he leaves his mark. His previous experience stands him in good stead.
Kushboo is the pivot around whom the movie revolves. She is good at it. So are the likes of seasoned artistes Nasser, Prabhu, Nepolean, Sneha and Rajkiran among others who chip in with their best.
Unfortunately Ilayaraja disappoints with his music. The songs fail to enter our ears. But he compensates with his brisk background score. Cheers to art director T Muthuraj. He has created huge palace, fort, battle field before our eyes. Shaji Kumar captures them well on his lens.
On the flip side, the movie has many dragging moments. Too many characters come and go without leaving a mark. The first half proceeds at quick pace, but the latter part of ‘Ponnar Sankar’ stutters and staggers.

Ponnar Shankar has everything required to make old fashioned period drama- grandeur, great sets, rich costumes, well-choreographed action war scenes and thrilling sword fights plus romance, bravery and soothing music of Ilairaja. Above all it has Prasanth in a stunning double role. What more can you ask?
However the film is weak on plot, though Kalignar’s dialogues and use of chaste Tamil words is another feather on his cap. It is obvious that the film has been made to be a fast pace entertainer with all essential ingredients, targeting today’s audiences. Ponnar and Shankar are revered as demi-gods.
It is the story of brave twins Ponnar and Shankar (played superbly by Prashanth), who forms an integral part of folklore as they became rulers of a Kingdom in medieval Tamil Nadu, against all odds after their parents are killed. The film chronicles the life and times of Ponnar and Shankar from their birth to the time they vanquish the enemies of the state.
Like in many period dramas of the past an array of characters walks through the film in supporting cast to take the story forward. P & S’s mother Thamarai Nachiar (Kushboo) and father Nellaiyan Kondan (Jayaram), the scheming villain Manthiappan (Prakash Raj), who had a crush on the twin’s mother and is seeking revenge.
The loyal, devoted and courageous Rakki Annan (Raj Kiran), the guru of the twins. The only sister of theirs is played by Sneha. Napolean plays a king who is manipulated by his army chief. And the twins have two beautiful sisters Muthaagi (Pooja Chopra) and Pavalagi (Divya Parameshwaran) to romance.
Technically Ponnar Shankar is slick, count Muthuraj’s sets, Shaji’s camera work and Don Max’s editing. Music and re-recording of Ilaiyaraaja is a major plus, with ‘Kannai Padithaen’ being the pick of the lot.
The film belongs to Prashanth right from his terrific introductory scene riding a horse and doing some amazing action scenes. The other actors have only one or two scenes and are there to just carry the story forward.
On the downside the film has no logic, weak storyline and there is continuity problem and loop holes in the plot. However at the end of the day the film is made like a big budget period drama with the intention to entertain the mass audiences and it does to a large extent.
Verdict- Entertainer

"The biggest drawback, though, is the fact that historical accuracy has been thrown to the winds. No time period is mentioned, there are no references to places or kings.
Perhaps realising the futility of the project, Ilaiyaraja has just skimmed the bare bones of his usually fulfilling musical compositions. The tunes are all generic, and though the background score rises and falls in operatic fashion, none of it gels.
As a historical movie, this one's an epic fail."

No, who is in the film and when was it released?
MP /AO review ellam pottu romba naal aichu, I liked MP more than AO
MP - Liked the story, a realistic story, quite patriotic kind of story, I liked everything even the songs, Amy Jackson but Arya with a wooden face with no acting or expression was the major drawback
AO - It started of like a mistry /spoof , with stunning camera work, editing, visuals etc, Karthi was good, Reema was better
, but it was rather long and I did not understand the Climax

ponnar-sankar songs are instantly catchy!
Looks like IR was in good mood (or Thiagarajan, the once-upon-a-time-manager-of-Polydor-music-company has some clout with IR).

Have you heard the songs? Most web sites say music was just average or below average, but these sites were full of Praise for the Genius's BGM !

I heard the songs and they're very catchy! Shreya G is quite sweet in a number of songs
(None of the male singers are a match to her calibre but not so much irritating as in some other recent albums of IR)
I won't call them at par with the songs that IR made at his peak (read late 70's and early 80's) but they are equal to or better than most of the songs that come out nowadays. Equal to in the sense, catchy tunes and mostly good recording / nice "sounds" etc. Better in the sense that some trade-mark-IR ideas keep showing up here and there (i.e. in portions of these songs)

NEVAIRE! (esp. the underlined part, no match to Harris/Yuvan sounds)
Saw the video of a couple of songs in IsaiAruvi. Bavani Varugiraa is filmed with lavish sets / colors and 100s of dancers and warrants some grand music i.e. real instruments. The video was actually quite OK, since prashanth is not seen much. The video of kannai padithen is awful. Anyway opting for real instruments/players would have cost only a portion of what was spent for the songs. I think, its not the money/budget but more of IR deciding, 'idhukku idhu pOdhum'. I like three songs and ShreyaG is just brilliant.

Ponnar Sankar Review :
The movie starts briskly until Ponnar & Sankar are introduced, one riding 2 buffalos and the other "flying", both are done by Prashant. Ponnar & Sankar are identical twins that they come on identical horses with a back drop of identical trees and use identical spears / swords to defend/fight. They run / Walk / smile identically. Bref, you see 2 Prashant(s), one on the right and one on the left of the screen.
Back to the story : The daughter of a clan leader or a king :
>> Interruption - Nothing was introduced clearly, so I do not know who is who. All that i could make out was Team 1 = Vijayakumar, Napolean, Prakash Raj ; Team 2 = Prashant, Raj kiran, Kushboo <<
So Vijayakumar's daughter Kushboo is to be married to Prakash Raj. Entry Jayram. Kushboo marries Jayaram, that forces her brother to send them away from the "house?" or "kingdom?". Before leaving she predicts that she will have twins and he will too have 2 daughters that he would come to her seeking the hands of her sons for his daughters ... something like that. Prakash Raj = furious / More vilanous.
Entry : Raj Kiran, Prashant's Guru. Entry also Nassar, indentical twin to Gandalf. Who is Nassar not so clear, but one thing was clear, when 2 Prashant saves 2 girls from the water, they get married. But Nassar does not get Sneha eventhough he saves her from the same waters ! Sneha, is the daughter of Kushboo. Kushboo thinks that her twins are died, a flash back told by Nassar. It goes like this, after being thrown out of the house, they come to Chola king who gives them land and they work hard to come up and are now "upper middle class". They had twins = Ponnar & Shankar. But Prakash Raj (who wanted to marry Kushboo but is still behind her daughter Sneha) Hatches a plan and twists Napolean by saying that the Twins would be a doom for him/kingdom, that Napolean orders Raj Kiran to kill the babies. But Raj Kiran being faithful (to whom I do not know) Kills his babies, again twins and saves Ponnar/Shankar.
Fews line up I told that Prashant saves 2 girls, they are none other than their Uncle's Daughters, and their uncle asks Kushboo to get them married = Sabatham OKAY.
Now, where does all this goes = Raj Kiran knowing the plot of Prakash Raj, trains the PS brothers so that they can "take revenge" for the babies Raj Kiran had to kill. But again Prakash Raj plots something, and kidnaps Sneha .... Kushboo dies ... gets a bit complicated here ... and Napolean is mistaken ... so on so forth. With the help of Chola King Prabhu, PS bros battle and take revenge : End fight most of the senior artist die ! Then PS bros liberate "some part of the kigdom" and Prabhu likes them is the final note.
Comeback movie for Prashant : Prashant hardly had anything to "talk". Most of time you can hear his voice "Ahh" "umm" "Ahhhhh" ... Thats it. He is good as Ponnar and Shankar, but they should have worked more on his moustache.
"Shoulders Like Mountians" = Okay ; "Moustache as Pointed Spears" = A big NO. It looks like AruvaManai Upside Down.
Should wait another 5+ years for another "come back" movie of Prashant. I atleast thought he would have delivered some outstanding long dialogues (Just like Junior NTR in "Yamadonga"), but nope !
One other thing that left me confusing : The tamil that they spoke was in "current tamil slang". Again no period was mentioned. Just like AO, we got to assume that people like Parthiban still live amoung us. In PS, they wear gold ornaments and travel on horse backs.
Talking about "horse back", I did see some very good Horse back Riding. I have been doing horseback riding for the past 6 years, and I could say that these guys are really good. Could have got them on camera more precisely and for long.
Action : Lot of people running around with Rubber Swords and at times Prashant jumps from no where and slices throats. The action scenes moves so fast that you could not see what is happening, but you know what is happening, Thanks to all the tamil movies we have watched = Bad guys get killed by good guys.
Music : Seeing all that happened in 150 mins, there is nothing to comment on Music. Raja sir was on vacation.
Ponnar Shankar could have been engaging, if they had atleast tried to tell us what they are "telling".

Finaly seen the movie, I was quite reluctant as it was a Karunanidhi movie, but wanted to watch it as it was period Film. The Film was very good, excellent sets/stunts! , the fights looked similar to scenes from the Hollywood movie 'Brave heart' ! Prashant had done well, good come back. Not much impressed with IR's songs, BGM as usual was awesome by IR.
Sneha looked much more beautiful than Heroines
Next on the list to watch is vaanam ...
