Payanam an upcoming bilingual movie of Nagarjuna is made in both tamil and telugu version is produced by actor Prakash Raj under his home production to be known as "Duet Movies" alongwith co-producer Dil Raju. This movie is directed by Radha Mohan.
Being the leading roles are taken by Nagarjuna and Prakash Raj alongwith Poonam Kaur , Anushka Shetty as leading lady characters, Bharath Reddy & Bramanandam are the other actors in leading role.
Prakash Raj has opted his favorite director Radha Mohan to do the direction as he has already delivered some great hits with story and screenplay and many of his movies like Mozhi and Abhiyum Naanum won accolodes for the directionship of Radhamohan as this movie is going to release on 1st January 2011.
As already mentioned that Payanam movie will be released as "Gaganam" in telugu version with the same star cast and the technical crews.
Payanam a movie with action packed thriller where hero Nagarjuna is playing as a commando is all about hijacking of Indian Airlines Plane IC 814 and audience !!!
its a movie where one can have an experience like what could be the mental status of the passengers at the hijack as the first portions completed both the producer Prakash Raj and director Radha Mohan seems to be happy with the outcome.

How would one explain the feeling of watching something in Tamizh film format, what one has already seen coming from Hollywood decades ago. From Connery's The Terrorists, to those Airport movies, to Executive Decision, and a few others I am not bothered to remember back to 90s, up to Jodie Fosters recent. How convenient it is for us to stitch all the plot together, mish mash of everything, because its either cheaper now to do those kinda movies or they can come up with bigger money, lump them together, and finally wait for reviewers say, "this can give Hollywood a run for the money" when actually they should say, "this should give Hollywood 25 years ago a run for its money".
Having said that, am looking forward to watching it

if not for content, I would have placed endhiran as the worst of shankar's stuff.
I love to see new attempts Rakesh. at least those new to Tamil.
New directors offer lots of hope. I think TF is heading for its golden age.
I also saw a trailer yesterday, for another naadodigal-styled movie THOONGAA NAGARAM - abt 4 friends (VKK guy and the deaf guy from nadodigal) It also stars Anjali.
altho
I hope it will be yet another good movie.

I love to see new attempts, period. Not second hand from Hollywood, but with good performers I wouldn't mind watching, like Endhiran. But yeah, the new directors are doing okay. Golden Age? I don't know. Films are getting better, but on screen performance are not going anywhere, imbalanced in my view.

I dont know. performance is one thing - angaadi theru being a well rounded experience.
But there are some movies that can do well, even without marked performance, like madrasappattinam or even BEB.
Deathbells have sounded for mass movies and thats a good sign for the industry. The trend now seems to be feel-good movies.
Yeah, I am hopeful.

Skyward Ho!
MALATHI RANGARAJAN
What makes Payanam unique? Director Radha Mohan tells Malathi Rangarajan that it's a tense and thrilling ride, yet one that has its lighter moments.
Be it Azhagiya Theeyae, Mozhi or Abhiyum Naanum, each Radha Mohan film has been different from the other. Now, Payanam, which is to roll out of the Prakash Raj stable soon, is again on a subject Radha hasn't handled before, viz., airline hijack. “It isn't planned. The plot develops in my mind and soon finds a genre for itself,” he laughs. The film also marks the re-entry of Nagarjuna in Tamil after a decade and more.
The Radha Mohan-Prakash Raj combo has carved a niche for itself as a provider of healthy entertainers. You hardly see Radha joining hands with anyone else. “Prakash's production house is a hassle-free zone. The comfort level is complete and creative freedom, absolute. To top it all, he's a good friend,” he smiles. “For instance, Payanam doesn't have formulaic song sequences because I felt it could impede the intensity of the drama. With others it may have taken a lot of convincing from my side. But Prakash understood my point implicitly.”
Healthy comedy is Radha's forte. All his ventures have an undercurrent of spontaneous humour that adds flavour to the narration. Still comedy in a skyjack drama is intriguing. He explains: “Levity is essential even in a tense tale — a gamut of emotions should help hold viewers' interest till the very end. So, amidst the trauma, we show a flip side — but the humour element is very much part of the story. It's a challenge and I hope viewers accept this rare genre — a thriller with an appropriate dose of fun.”
Payanam has been simultaneously shot in Telugu as Gaganam. His earlier film, Abhiyum Naanum, was dubbed into Telugu (Aakashamantha), after some of the scenes were re-shot with Jagapathy Babu in the role of Prithviraj. “Aakashamantha's success has been a morale booster and is one of the reasons for us to go bi-lingual this time. Payanam's theme is universal and once Nagarjuna came on board we knew it would suit both audiences,” says Radha.
It is a compliment to Radha Mohan's capability that Nagarjuna has chosen Payanam as his re-launch vehicle in Tamil. “He liked my work in Aakashamantha and told Prakash Raj that he was interested in the kind of films we make. When ‘Dil' Raju, the producer of the Telugu version, suggested Nagarjuna, I knew he was spot on. Initially I wasn't sure whether Nag would accept the role because Payanam has no grand opening song, romance or duets. But when he heard the script his immediate response was, ‘I love it. I'm in,'” Radha recalls. But all said and done, Nagarjuna is comparatively less known in Tamil. “He's really big in Telugu and quite a familiar face in Tamil. And that Prakash Raj's films are synonymous with quality is a factor in our favour,” contends Radha. It's also true that Prakash Raj and Radha Mohan have built a strong audience base in the South and overseas market.
Nag plays a commando chief and Prakash Raj, a bureaucrat. Besides them, Payanam has nearly 100 known and not-too-known actors, including Radha camp constants M. S. Bhaskar and Kumaravel. “I needed bulk dates from the cast. I mean, even if the shot involved only the passenger sitting in the first row of the plane everyone had to be on board throughout. So they had to stay put in Hyderabad. Also zeroing in on suitable faces that would jell in a bilingual was quite a task,” he smiles.
Kulu Manali, Hyderabad and Tirupati are the locations. “Art director Kadhir's replica of the Tirupati airport is phenomenal. And no other film of mine has had CG work of such huge proportions,” Radha Mohan is very satisfied with the technical expertise of Payanam. “Lensman Guhan is an asset. His use of the Red One camera has yielded stupendous results. Rajasekar's stunt choreography and Gnanavel's dialogue are other ingenious features,” he affirms.
Doesn't it bother him that a recent Malayalam film had a similar theme? Radha is unfazed. “Not at all, my story and treatment are entirely different. In fact, earlier when I met Major Ravi for a few clarifications on the subject of commando operations, he told me about Kandahar, which he was planning then.”
So how does the director sum up the Payanam experience? “A challenging journey, but one that's been absolutely jerk-free for me as a maker. Much research has gone into making Payanam an authentic experience for viewers. The reel will be thrillingly real,” he laughs.

Gaganam - Movie Review
Feb 8, 2011 - 3:38:51 PM
Film: Gaganam
Cast: Nagarjuna, Prakash Raj, Bharat Reddy, Brahmanandam, Ravi, Poonam Kaur, Sana Khan, Talaivasal Vijay, Melkote and others
Dialogue: Umarjee Anuradha
Cinematography: K V Guhan
Produced by: Dil Raju
Banner: Matinee Entertainments
Story, screenplay and direction: Radha Mohan
What’s it about!
A terrorist group hijacks a star-jet airplane from Chennai. The plane, with 75 passengers and crew, is brought to Tirupati airport on an emergency landing. A minister, a leading actor, a doctor, a father, a small kid and her family from Pakistan and a father are among its passengers. The terrorists demand their important leader Yosuf Khan be released from the prison. Home secretary Vishwanath (Prakash Raju), National Security adviser and other top bosses also come down to Tirupati to negotiate with the terrorists. National Security Guards officer Ravi (Nagarjuna) is also brought in. But government refuses to take commando operation immediately although Ravi insists on doing. Succumbing to terrorists’ demands, the government releases Yousuf Khan but he gets killed in a road accident when he is being brought. Now the drama starts, how do Ravi and his team accomplish their mission and frees the passengers from hijackers?
Analysis
This is the first time that a Telugu movie is completely focused on a Hijack drama from first frame to the end. Not just that, Gaganam is different in many ways and moreover a very racy movie. Although the movie stars Nagarjuna, it doesn’t have songs, nor does it have physical fights for the star. It is content driven, screenplay based movie. Genre specific movie.
Director Radha Mohan (who won appreciation for his earlier movie, Akashamantha) puts together a tight narrative and does not give in to the temptation of stuffing the film with either songs, or separate comedy track. At the run time of about 2 hours, the movie doesn’t slack at anytime. Though it starts off rather unenthusiastically but it hooks you to the story as the movie progresses. Second half is riveting.
The movie takes inspiration from Kandhar hijack episode, and several Hindi movies including Zameen (2003), yet the director has presented in novel way. The interval twist, the drama in the second half, climax sequences and a satire on our ‘shining stars’ are best segments of the movie.
On the down side, it has unnecessary track between Sana Khan and a newcomer, and some superficial dialogues.
Performances
Nagarjuna in the role of a NSG commando is pillar to the movie. His stellar performance and dignified looks have brought authenticity to the role. He also looks lean and charming.
Prakash Raj has not much lengthy role but he brings his experience to the character. Bharat Reddy as assistant to Nag, Ravi as pilot, Poonam Kaur as air hostess and Harsha Vardhan as reporter are good and perfect to their characters. Vijay as Colonel plays vital role. Sana Khan has little to do in the movie. Scenes involving Brahmanandam as film director evoke some laughs. Pridhvi as film actor okay but his character is best satire on our real life film stars.
K V Guhan should be showered praises for imaginatively putting the camera as the story revolves either in interiors of plane or an office room. Shot on digital Red Camera, Guhan has come up with some innovative angles. Most part of the story runs in the inside environs of a plane or in the office of airport. So it is tough job for a cameraman to show variation. Guhan comes as winner. The other technician who should be commended for his work is art director. The set of airplane (erected at Ramoji Film City) is almost like real. Background score is alright. Dialogues by Anuradha are okay.
Director Radha Mohan scores in direction and screenplay. He handles the dramatic sequences with ease and maintains the curiosity throughout the movie, not sidestepping from the main plot. Production values are on superior range although it is low budgeted movie.
Bottom-line
Gaganam is different movie and is racy hijack drama. Nagarjuna’s charming performance, director’s narration in the second half, and short run time are its strength. It may cater to niche audiences, but all those who crave for good cinema would definitely appreciate it.

While Payanam is not the movie of the year, it is certainly a movie that has pushed the limits of Tamil film productions.
NO SONGS! NO ROMANCE! NO DOUBLE MEANING DIALOGUES! NO HEROISM!
We went for the 3.15 show, which turned out to be a packed show. 9.15pm and 12.15am shows were sold out by then.
Crowd appreciated the movie very much bursting into laughter and mostly clapping especially when digs were often taken at super stars and their punch dialogues.
Story: A plane starts off from Chennai airport and within 10 mins of the film is hijacked. Because of engine troubles, the plane is emergency-landed at Tirupathi where all the action takes place.
The hijackers make their demands and the battle between the govt of the day and the commando unit begins. Media complicates the situation.
Story is made more interesting with some interesting facets of the passengers. While some happenings seem cliches, they are quickly forgiven in the whole scheme of things.
Special mention must be made at constant digs made at movie making in general and masala movies specifically.
Unlike UPO, this one doesn't make any statements, but just old fashioned story-telling.
Don't miss this movie, for its definitely not your usual Thamizh cinema.
I would rate this movie just below Aadukkalam (without making comparisons) but head and heels above all others released this year, including Thoongaa Nagaram.
Go for it!

Media suyanalam, Arasayil vaathinga suyanalathukaaga edukira naatta paathikira mudivunnu niraya bold moments.
Priest Character, Mohanram character and that Muslim Girl Character for filling some nice emotional moments.
Nagarjun and Prakashraj were very well fit for the characters.
Radhamohan deserves a huge clap.
Chinna Chinna logical minuses and konjam seyarkayaa fit panra character nnu minus..
That does not matter.
Very nice movie.. me, wife, Dad and mom every one loved and were laughing whole heartedly throughout the movie.
Great relief.. no songs...
Dont miss. Definitely family oada paarkalaam.
Youngsters kku pirdikkumaannu therila..

Comedy comes so naturally to him and he is one talented director to look out for.
I didn't expect payanam to be this comical. Its really a surprise.

Radhamohan is really good in making a movies with human emotions along with humour. Right from the Azhagiye theeye till payanam..

As a thriller it fails to impress.. Yutham sey is way above this as a thriller/movie experience.. For me that is the movie of the year so far followed by Aadukalam.
Yes I did laugh at the comic moments, but they dont stick to the situation.. Even the Human emotions/sentiments seems dramatic rather than realistic.. and the main plot seemed childish (
keeping the flight like a sitting dick at the same place for 5 days and waiting for terror to strike, allowing the cleaner to go out and come again multiple times, their arguments with the passengers etc.. ) To add it looked like a dubbing movie at many places.. and a preachy tone all over the film..

there are some things that irks me abt the movie
esp the "useofkhan" in movies. why do they mostly name a muslim terrorist khan, is that surname symbolicfor every man named khan are being suspected as terrorists in every nations.
terrorists being shown in a humane way doesnt reflect reality, they dont care for hostages like shown in payanam.

THE first batch of released passengers gave a graphic account of their ordeal. According to them, the male passengers were segregated from the women and children and blindfolded. The women claimed that the hijackers behaved well with them and were affectionate towards the children.

ended up watching it online ! its just an average movie.
Few comical scences.
Only Star Jet is allowed to transport hostages and terroist.. No Govt helicopter or army plane .. super
Lame weak avalanche twist , you are transporting a high value terrroist you don't check for weather.. comeon ?
Church bell rope, Army pyramid? you got to be kidding me ? Before major operation Indian army doesn't check these things?
And they looks for a Movie Actor to buy them time?
Naga arjuna sir, running away with bomb on the open runway seriously? he is that brave
Paakash rasa sir, negotation tactics ,acting.. wah wah just out of the world. (Kevin spacey's acting is nothing compare to this one )
Handsome doctor running around flight with rite medicines.. and saving peoples lives thru out hostage crisis was very thoughtful. And he also had a beautiful gil bajak gilma in next seat.
If they could have managed to sqeeze in 1 cook and 1 housemaid, they could have cooked food / washed clothes and taken care of hostages little better.
1 idiot even makes a comment something like "it all started because when you guys destroy their mosque and they started kidnapping / terrorism"
how low and responsible our directors can get
around handling sensitive subjects?
I wish plot was little more serious, little more well thought ! Saving grace, Nagarjuna,Nagarjuna,Nagarjuna Very comendable performance. Rest OOO yeah !!

Terrible terrible film. Just seen the first 1 hour. One of the worst films I have seen in recent times. Mother of all cliches. Funniest thing was Nagarajuna's acting and his hand gestures while mouthing the dialogues. A first time TV serial actor could have done better. Absolutely recommeneded for unintended laughs. This, being passed of as qOlity film? And RM-PR were seen in every other channel promoting this film as 'nalla thamizh padam'. Sathiyamaa mudiyalai.

I saw the movie last week and kinda liked it.It was not a great movie as prakashraj was promoting in the channels but felt it was decent enough. There were lot of unwanted and cliched scenes which reduced the pace of the movie but there was a suspense factor which kept the movie alive.A person disguising as a terrorist was silly and cinematic and comedy was forced into that segments.Nagarjuna did his job well and bhaskar, manobala, thalaivasal vijay,Rishi and some other characters helped the movie to have some momentum throughout. It is not a must watch movie but a decent one...

The tension is inherent (similar to UPO) in the plot itself. However Radha Mohan has tried to tell a human story in it. However in the process has introduced one cliche' too many.
However it is not to say that it is all hopeless. The thodai nadungi junior artiste being asked to play a "terrorist" angle was funny and well done too.
MS Bhaskar plays the mother of all Thamizh cinema cliches - the All white christian pastor and pulls it off due to the earnestness with which he delivers it. The film's best two shots belong to him (the ones outside the plane after the episode is over - with the bodies of the terrorists).
Some of the dialogues were pretty good too "Sir you are not experienced -- Just OLD" to quote one.
Prakash Raj has nothing much to do and simply comes and goes - but compared to other non-actors, he is tolerable .
The beggar who irritated in "Abhiyum Naanum" comes again here as a "communist gandhian" (what a cliche sirjee?) and promptly gets killed. In fact I would have killed him myself. A plane with terrorists is not the right place to show off - you bummer..
Prithviraj (babloo)as the "star" and the guy who plays "Java" ulaganathan in Arain en 303il kadavul plays his fan and their scenes too were pretty much cliched - yet made tolerable because of their performances. Sana khan and the "deal or no deal" guy track sucked big time and thalai vasal vijay turned in a creditable turn. We need to use him more.
Finally Radha mohan - it was only expected when he made Abhiyum nanum that his cutesy way of showing ppl will finally become oversweet. When he had a gritty subject on hand - he couldnt provide the necessary accentuation of tension. It was more or less watching India Vs West Indies cricket match - a match of chokers where the weak team started choking at 30 over mark itself chasing a modest total. Also a note to whoever makes BGM for terrorism subject - be it hollywood, bollywood or kollywood. Stop making "islamic sounding" BGMs for terrorist scenes-
A) it is very very cliched.
B) neutral ppl might think of terrorists next time a minaret loudspeaker goes off calling for prayers.

I missed the movie in theatre.. Gud movie. Radha mohan tried a new genre with same old casts. Naga arjun n prakash raj did their part. Rishi acting is smart. Prithviraj n chaams comedy track is really gud one. PADAM PAARKKA NALLA ELLA NA PARAVA ELLA KEKKA VE NALLA ELLAYE really nice dialogues. Guhan photography is clear n crisp.

Stop making "islamic sounding" BGMs for terrorist scenes-
A) it is very very cliched.
B) neutral ppl might think of terrorists next time a minaret loudspeaker goes off calling for prayers.
Actually, I agree with the statement even without reasons A) and B).

After postponing for a long time, I finally ended up watching this film. Pretty good film! I liked it... ended up watching it twice unintentionally but didn't get bored even the second time.
Two things I liked about the film, dialogues and the acting. Of course there were lot of cliches, but I never felt the writing was unimaginative.

Finally saw the movie, I was not disapointed at all, great stuff, good screen play, acting the crew, hilarious encounters with Prithviraj and the other guy who was sitting next to him (what is his name?). Thanks God there were no songs in the movie, this should be a trend setter for Tamil Films, I know there were few other films in the past without Songs, but the industry did not maintain it
One thing I did not agree about the film is that, how can a Hard core terrorists show emotions towards any one (Yes I am talking about the child). and the final encounter with Terrorists by the Commandoes looked a bit odd!
BTW, who is that Air hostess Gilma
Nalla irukanga
