I have a feeling this movie has a long life.. I had not run enough..
Few things are clear,
* In Andhra, it is accepted a Biggest hit of Rajni, biggest hit of Shankar, biggest hit of all the dub movies, arguably biggest hit of all time (may be second only to mahadheera)
* In Kerala it did do extremely well.
* Overseas, no questions, people made money.
* Chennai, no questions it is a BB.
* In Hindi, it is certainly a Hit if not a super hit
I am not sure what kind of deals made in all other centers of TN by sun tv. But nobody complains (not even a single theatre owner). BUt the way SUN network did the business is not clear to me>

Robot had record TRP's at Andra
2011-Jan-17
The Telugu channel Gemini TV pulled off a major coup when they telecasted Rajinikanth's super hit Shankar directed Telugu Robot (Enthiran) on Sankranthi day (January 15).
The Sun Pictures produced film's Tamil version Enthiran completed 100 days in cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu last week.
Since Enthiran is still running in screens in the state,
Gemini TV (a sister concern of Sun TV) blocked Robot telecast in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The telecast was seen in Andhra and other parts of the world.
Early reports indicate that Robot had record TRP's and was the number one film on Telugu channels on Sankranthi day.
When will the original Enthiran be seen on television? Probably next Pongal !
Will probably telecast it as early as April 14 or Deepavali this year.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Regional-RICHES/739624/
Refreshing content, reach of theatres and a film-hungry public make it a great time for regional cinema, but political issues like Telangana and high star fees are a dampener.
Two Bengali films, one featuring Satyajit Ray’s sleuth Feluda, ruled the multiplexes in Kolkata during the busy December weekend, while Bollywood biggie Tees Maar Khan ran to empty halls; in the first quarter of 2010, Marathi films outdid Hindi films at the box-office; the Tamil industry will register record revenues of approximately Rs 800 crore in fiscal 2010-11, primarily because of the success of Rajinikanth’s Enthiran.
As regional content becomes richer, big production houses, from Reliance to Eros and Zee, are betting big on regional cinema. Foreign studios, too, have realised that to do better numbers in India, it’s imperative to penetrate the regional markets. Consequently, all their releases are now dubbed into Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and are likely to be extended to other languages too.
The biggest contributor to regional cinema is the South, of course, with analysts pegging the aggregate market size of the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries at Rs 1,703 crore in FY’09 in terms of total revenues. As per an Ernst & Young report on Southern cinema, of the aggregate market size, the Telugu segment contributes around Rs 707 crore, the Tamil segment Rs 707 crore, the Malayalam segment 140 crore and the Kannada segment Rs 50 crore. In terms of overall share, the Telugu and Tamil segments account for approximately 45 percent each, while the Malayalam segment accounts for eight percent and Kannada segment two percent. The Indian film industry was pegged at Rs 8,930 crore in 2009, registering a de-growth from 2008’s Rs 10,400 crore.
Could Enthiran’s success prove to be a turning-point for the Tamil film industry? Enthiran is largely responsible for the industry registering a turnover of Rs 800 crore in FY2010, from a compounded annual growth of Rs 500 crore for the last three years. The Kalanithi Maran-promoted, Sun Pictures’ produced Enthiran, with its approximate Rs 100-crore production budget, made Kollywood’s annual business zoom to Rs 800 crore, says Ramanujam, film critic and editor of Tamil Ezine, tamilnaduentertainment.com . “It is purely because of Enthiran that Kollywood revenues touched a new high. Being an exception for its high-cost production and promotion expenditure, the industry cannot dish out movies with a budget like Enthiran’s every year. Therefore, the industry will return to revenue levels of approximately Rs 500 crore,” he adds.
In all, 137 Tamil films were released in 2010 compared to 133 films in 2009. Ramanujam says that small-budget films did well again in 2010, continuing the trend that began in 2009. In the Bengali film industry, too, “urban, small-budget films did well,” says Arijit Dutta, MD, Priya Entertainments. “The past six months have been encouraging for the Bengali film industry, with movies like Gautam Ghosh’s Moner Manush and Prosenjit’s Autograph doing well,” he adds. The Bengali film industry is valued at Rs 150 crore and the average budget is from Rs 60 lakh to Rs 2.5 crore, excluding print and publicity costs, say insiders.
For the Telugu film industry, however, 2010 was bad, due to political developments, particularly the change of leadership and the ongoing Telangana struggle. The industry is yet to emerge from the slowdown and there is a dearth of both great story lines and big budgets.
Insiders say that the Telangana factor affected business severely and there’s been a 35 percent drop in collections. Historically, the film industry in Andhra Pradesh is rooted in the political world. In the current scenario, Tollywood heroes Chiranjeevi and Mohan Babu’s stand on united Andhra has hit the films that they promote in the Telangana region. “The Telangana agitators have started banning films of their families,” says Vijayendar Reddy, president, Film Chamber of Commerce, Hyderabad chapter.
Megastar Chiranjeevi, also the president of Praja Rajyam Party, resigned in protest against the idea of a separate state of Telangana. Though the party supported the demand for a separate state before the elections, it has changed its stand now. This fuelled the ongoing fire and in retaliation, Telangana agitators forcibly stalled screenings of Chiranjeevi’s nephew Allu Arjun’s movie, Arya 2. There are over 600 theatres in the Telangana region that have collections of Rs 60 lakh per day. On an average, the Telugu industry launches over 10-12 films a year, but 2010 was dull from the beginning due to the slowdown, though Enthiran did very well. In the Tamil film industry, Ramanujam lists three low-cost movies — “all credit attributable to the directors” —that not only wowed the audience, but also made producers very happy. “Sargunam’s Kalavani, Prabhu Solomon’s Maina and CS Amudhan’s Tamil Padam raked in the moolah with their budget investments,” he points out.
What’s also worked in favour of regional cinema is the fact that multiplexes are now increasing shows of language movies. Marathi cinema, which had gone into decline in the ’90s, has seen a revival since Shwaas became the official entry for the Oscars in 2004; in 2009, Harishchandrachi Factory, about the struggle of Dadasaheb Phalke to make Raja Harishchandra in 1913, also went to the Oscars. The Shiv Sena and MNS brigades may have forced multiplexes to show more Marathi films, but the industry has also backed it up by producing a variety of content. Vihir, Natarang and Zenda have got both critical and commercial success. “In 2010, regional cinema saw some great success. One or two Punjabi films did very well, besides Marathi, Bengali and Bhojpuri,” says Tushar Dhingra, COO, Reliance BIG Cinemas.
As per E&Y, a large number of people in South India watch movies in theatres. That’s true of the Bengali and Bhojpuri audiences as well, but Bengal has a paucity of screens. “We have shrunk from 800 to 300, and Bengali films are in serious danger if screens aren’t increased,” says Dutta. In the South, domestic theatrical revenues are the most important source of revenue. According to E&Y, despite a small geographic area, theatrical collections from South Indian movies are high. The region houses 5,000 theatre screens, which is almost 50 percent of the total number of operational theatre screens in India. “The proportion of people watching films to the overall population is much higher in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh than other parts of the country,” say analysts. In Tamil Nadu, stars such as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth didn’t disappoint in 2010, and unsung directors with their low-cost, low-risk projects also made it big. “Vasantha Balan’s Angadi Theru, K Rajesh’s Boss Engira Bhaskaran, Singam Puli’s Goripalayam shared honours with celebrity actor and director-driven movies such as Gautham Vasudeva Menon’s Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya (Simbu and Trisha as leads), Lingu Swami’s Payya (pairing of Surya’s sibling Karthick and Tamanaa),” says Ramanujam.
Kollywood analyst Ravishankar says that the success of Maina and Mishkin’s Nandalaala is an eye-opener for others to try different content. This year Kollywood will have films from stars such as Vijay, Vikram and Ajith. Vijay, whose 50th movie Suraa bombed at the box office, will be looking to make amends in Kavaalan, set to hit screens by Pongal. Ajith has two films, Mangaatha and Billa part-2
Ramanujam rues that lead stars starring in the 15 top films that make up the lion’s share of Kollywood’s revenues are arbitrarily hiking their salaries to astronomical levels. “Out of an Rs 500-crore turnover, producers cough up Rs 300 crore towards stars’ pay,” he points out. Bollywood learnt the hard way, post-meltdown, that bottomlines had to be watched and one way was to reduce star fees. The South could take a tip or two.

Following ‘Endhiran’, which did better at other centres than in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth will come up with ‘Hara’ which is being wielded by his newly-wedded daughter, Soundarya.

The parts I marked bold are the most likely. Things are changing. One reason theatre owners like Rajini was the huge markup in terms of black ticket prices and "additional" seats sold without taxes.
The new payment scheme set up by Sun Pictures, plus the wide release strategy probably makes a huge dent in those sales.
This is exacerbated by the news reports of how much Rajini & Sun Pics made, the total collections etc.
Finding a balance where every one in the supply chain makes money equitably is a challenge.

As Madanagopal, the ever suspicious fiancé, Madhavan shone in Manmadhan Ambu. When quizzed about the movie getting not so great reviews, Maddy says that he is happy with the responses and that though MA was no Endhiran in the box office, it did have its share of success.
When asked about his next projects, Maddy says he is mighty excited about Lingusamy’s Vettai. “It is going to be a total riot when Arya and I get together. Director Lingusamy has no idea what is in store for him when we get into full masti mode,” says Maddy.
He will also start shooting for a trilingual with director Vikram Kumar with whom he has worked in Yaavarum Nalam. The film will be made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.

MA was not an Enthiran: Madhavan
Madhavan in an interview to a newspaper has said that his Kamal Haasan- Trisha starrer Manmadhan Ambu was not a hit and it is unfair to compare it with Rajinikanth's Enthiran!
Maddy said: "Sometimes, despite doing everything right, a film fails to click. Manmadhan Ambu may not have been an Enthiran in the kind of reception it has had at the BO, it has done reasonably well. My performance has come in for some great reviews".
Now Maddy is shifting his focus to Lingusamy's Vettai in which he is paired with Arya, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul.
He says he will start shooting for the film shortly and it will be 'Full-On Masti'!

ithellam extra bittu

I think they are being very sarcastic. Just posting some of the +ve comments to that-
That’s some original stuff right there, I like the Ball O’ Robots flaming down all the bad guys.
The computer graphics are impressive, to say the least, but…I’m going to go all female, here (which is not hard, considering I am female), and ask, what’s with all the non-stop death and destruction being dealt? Is it just a guy thing, and have I just answered my own question?
I couldn’t last the whole clip after watching all the human carnage. Sure, it’s bloodless, but…boy howdy, how many police officers did those robots take out? How many widows would there be? Fatherless children?
My daughter said that Transformers were also pwned by this one.
Beats the pants off iRobot. But is it plausible?

Enthiran profit= Rs 47 Crores!
It's official! Superstar Rajinikanth's Enthiran directed by Shankar and produced by Sun Pictures has made a clean profit of Rs 47 Crores.
Sun TV a public listed company has stated in their quarter report (Q3) that their movie production arm Sun Pictures made the big budget movie Enthiran.
The cost of production for the Enthiran (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi) stood at Rs1.32bn and Sun TV has earned total revenues of Rs1.79bn from the movie including sale of satellite rights.
The actual production cost is Rs.132 crores and earnings from it are Rs 179 Crore. It is their published report and hence all other unconfirmed reports of the film collecting Rs.300 crore at the global box-office turned out to be mere rumours.
Enthiran is a case study of the global reach of superstar Rajinikanth and smart marketing done by Sun Pictures.
It has also officially become the highest collecting and most profitable Tamil film ever produced.

“It was Rajini’s formidable brand image that did the trick this quarter,” says Ajay Vidyasagar, Chief Operating Officer of Sun TV.
“While there is no official source for box office collections,
Robot must have raked in at least 375 crore for us and the trade combined and this is a conservative estimate,” he says. The company had spent 132 crore to make the film.
Robot grossed Rs 62 crore from all versions in the first weekend and Rs 117 crore in the first week, thus becoming the first Indian film to cross this mark in a week. The film went on to become
the highest grosser, overtaking Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots.

Rajaram,
Total revenues generated(Sale price+various rights) - total cost=Profit for Sun pictures.
Collections can be higher. For eg:Sun sold chennai area for 8 crores, they will take it as their revenue,it might have done business of 16 crores there but that is not Sun's revenue.
So,officially we will only know how much Sun made but not how much Endhiran collected.
This will lead to more speculation which is sad.In 2011 atleast,I hope there is a proper mechanism to divulge info on the financial aspects of a film.

best thing is someone divide and post the components. Cinefan and others, in general, everyone understands that Sun TV cannot get all the 300 or 400 and it will get some amount after the buyers take thier sale price + (mutually agreed)profit and pass on the rest to others. In that way, to answer rajaram's post, one should say "yes, sify's report is true about that 47 cr but the rest of the amount went to distributors etc"
and yes one cannot expect the total gross made to be posted in financial results but Sun should officially announce that, otherwise, amounts will keep going like 300 400 500 etc...

IMO, SUN TV official financial results look ok to me....They received gross revenue (with 0% tax) through theatrical and audio rights about 179C, not including the money generated through exclusive interviews, various enthiran functions. Also, they are saying that the movie must have collected about 375C. What is wrong in this numbers?. It seems this big budget extravaganza had complete business from all quarters.

It was no.1 not only in sify but everywhere and thats something out of doubt isn't it?1
But a small correction, sify's post was before sun tv announced the financials, and they didn't mention clearly about enthiran's profit. Below is what they said about enthiran and about profits, in general -
http://www.sify.com/movies/Sify-Top-...e.html#galname
No 1 Film- Endhiran (Tamil only. Hindi and Telugu dubbed versions not included)
Box Office Revenue- Rs 125 Crore
Category- Super Hit
Tamil cinema has seen a record number of releases in 2010. 150 Tamil films released in the year out of which we are listing the top 10 grossers. The list has been compiled from trade sources in distribution and exhibition.
Please note the highest grossing film need not be the most profitable.
A film that may gross big, may not be as profitable if the cost of production and promotions are high. A small film made on a decent budget becoming a hit may be more profitable based on Return on Investments (ROI).
The estimated box-office revenue figures mentioned are approximate and put together from Indian domestic theatrical collections, overseas, audio, home video and television rights and other sources. It need not be exactly correct and may vary. A film which collects two or more times its budget is a blockbuster.

Then There is profilt share for Rajini which can be easily mimimum 21 and the total profit /total sale price becomes 200?

I think you are right. It was released in different countries in Europe with only English Subtitles. (I am not talking about a distributor showing it for Tamil community). I do not have the country lists though, just read them in several magazines here. Recently a french journal had published a full page report of Endiran and its sucess. It highlighted that till now only bollywood films are called indian films, but now the trend is changed. I think Only chandramukhi was dubbed in German. I saw it in german. in the French tv, its original with Subtiltes. They play it quite often. Another movie that is telecasted quite often is "kabhi kushi kabhi gham". This hindi movie is dubbed in mnay languages.
These video could be fan made. Anyway, Russian dubbings are horrible (I do not speak russian though). You can still hear the original audio ...

Here is a DVD review written by a fan (toddly6666) on a blu-ray disc forum (a bit long ... but sincere) [I wished to share it here] :
Non-Indians may think it’s a bit peculiar that a chubby, bald, out-of-shape, 61 year old Joe Pesci-look-a-like is not only South India’s biggest star but has been cast in huge action films from South India. Why would movie producers not cast a young hot stud in the lead role for India’s most expensive action movie which cost around 30 million dollars? It’s because the star of The Robot (“Enthiran” in its original Tamil language), Ranjikanth, is a real-life transformer. Once he’s on screen, he doesn’t just put on his costume, wig, and make-up, he actually becomes an impressive charismatic leading man - transforming into a cinematic superstar. During his transformation, he becomes a highly entertaining, likable actor and a very believable action hero. I just watch him with a smile on my face being aware of his real-life schlubiness.
I knew I wasn’t going to be disappointed by director Shankar’s The Robot since I perceive him as the James Cameron of India, and his films have always blown me away. Although a native Indian may disagree, Indian action movie cinema is quite a few steps (or years) behind the standards of what we would expect from a Hollywood or Hong Kong action film. So whenever director Shankar makes a film, he raises the bar for special effects and action choreography in Indian films. The Robot has some truly “Holy Crap” Matrix moments, especially during the climax. The creativity (and most of the money) in the climax of this film is totally original – I don’t want to give away any of the movie’s creative scenes, but I thought I was watching a wacky Japanese action movie directed by Takashi Miike during many of the truly visually amazing action scenes. The action choreography not only involved India’s most respectable action choreographer, Peter Hein, but The Robot also involved the master – Woo Ping Yeun – the action choreographer for The Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Fist of Legend, Once Upon A Time In China, and Iron Monkey. I don’t know how much of the movie he was involved in, but it showed. Even though the movie cost around 30 million dollars, Shankar didn’t totally balance out the spending. Many action scenes look like money well-spent and at the same level of the effects in a Hollywood action movie (mainly in the climax), while other scenes look like CGI from the early 2000s. For example, there are some baby scenes in this film - one scene has a real baby, another scene has a CGI baby, and in another scene, the baby is totally cartoon (well, it’s not a big deal since this one is from the 3D image of a baby in the womb of a pregnant woman, but it’s still unintentionally funny). Also, there are exoskeleton robot scenes of impressively built robots, great CGI robots, to early 2000s CGI robots, to a dude wearing a tin man suit. Some people may not like that. I personally love that combination – I see these faults as a charming characteristic of the film and a reminder of the way action movies used to be made, instead of being so perfectly clean and sterile, as well as being CGI overkill as in most action movies today.
I’ve seen my share of the few sci-fi/fantasy films that India has released, such as Mr. India, Anniyan, Krrish, Drona, Love Story 2050, Rudraksh, Kanthaswamy, Aladin, and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. Although some of them were good for India standards, the majority of them are not so good for the rest of the world standards when it comes to a well-written sci-fi/fantasy film. But I was totally surprised by the screenplay for this film. Even though the Robot is a mainstream bright colorful Masala film (an Indian film that mixes genres in one film, such as action, comedy, drama, romance, melodrama, and music), this movie is crammed with everything that you would want to see in a movie about a robot that gets artificial intelligence. The best characteristics of Wall-E, Terminator 1 & 2, Westworld, Blade Runner, A.I., Isaac Assimov & I Robot, Osamu Tezuka & Astro Boy, and RoboCop are in this film. The screenplay sticks to the basics of how to write an intense, interesting mainstream action movie. Keep the action moving and have no filler whatsoever. The first hour of this film feels like 10 minutes gone by. I do understand why the whole movie feels like that, because the screenplay has established conflict in every scene - conflict that leads from conflict to conflict to conflict – straight from the opening scene of the movie and all the way to the end credits. That’s how you write a movie. That’s basic quality screenwriting. If no conflict is established, you don’t care for the characters, the movie gets boring and feels long, and you just want the movie to end. The Robot is a beautifully written mainstream action sci-fi film. Remember that I just said beautifully written “mainstream” action sci-fi film. Those expecting something deep, dark, and analytical may be disappointed. What’s surprising about this film is that this film ain’t some PG-rated Bicentennial Man film – The Robot is as R-rated as it gets. There is violence in this film - bloody violence in this film - murdering of innocents galore, heads shots, heads chopped off, heads mashed, weapons galore, people trampled on, people hit by cars, massive collateral damage, hints of gang rape, hints of regular rape, and so on.
And by the way, one of the best looking actresses in the world, Aishwarya Rai, is in this film. Even if the main robot character in this film didn’t have artificial intelligence, I’m sure it would still fall in love with her. She has that power.
Since the blu-ray is delayed due to Indian companies fighting for the rights, the only English-subtitled, original audio (Tamil) home video is the Ayngaran DVD. This DVD comes with two discs – one disc is the movie with DTS audio and the other disc is the movie with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. So if you buy this DVD, you can sell one of the discs if you like. The DVD is perfectly fine and is at the same standard of a typical Indian DVD (meaning, not as good as a Hollywood DVD). The DTS audio is excellent and the anamorphic video is perfectly fine on my 37 inch HDTV. There are many people complaining that it doesn’t look as good as a usual DVD from Ayngaran, but the image is just fine until we get a blu-ray of this film. The only people complaining about the DVD video quality are blu-ray folk, so I think they are forgetting a couple things:
1. Once you go Blu, it is hard to watch a DVD again, even a new Hollywood DVD. Even I have become a blu-ray snob, but The Robot is so entertaining, I’m not watching “the DVD”, I’m watching “the movie.”
2. Indian DVDs are not known for their video quality.
If you want to see a bad video quality of a huge Indian movie, watch the Eros DVD of Devdas – now that is a bad DVD (pixilation and banding). The video has some scratches and hairs but it’s not that distracting. The only negative about the DVD is that the Ayngaran logo pops up every other second and it's not even in the bottom right corner - it pops up practically in the middle right corner! It’s not a big deal because that’s common with Indian DVDs and once again, this DVD is a perfectly acceptable DVD to watch on a home theater until the blu-ray gets released. Maybe it’s harder to watch on a 50+ screen but I can’t comment on that. The English subtitles are typically Indian-English as well, mostly grammatically correct but with some strange translations. I would also like to add that I have no understanding of that DVD cover design. There is no point in the movie where the main character where's a helmet.
Movie: 10
DVD Video: 7.5
DVD Audio: 9
English subtitles: 8
Extras: 0
The Robot may not be the best science fiction movie ever made, but it’s pretty safe to say that The Robot is the best science fiction musical movie ever made.

National (predominatly north indies, conveniently ignoring south indies and their problems) media, one of the biggest with coverage all over India electing our thalaivar as the best entertainer for a decade, for no political reasons of course is certainly praiseworthy.

This past Tuesday I helped a friend organize one day of a film festival on Rajinikanth. It was a small auditorium (which filled up pretty quickly). We showed 16V, Murattu KaaLai and Baasha. It was interesting to see people with no concept of the man struggle to come terms with his success. Most were very impressed with 16V as a film but could not watch MK/Baasha. There were the usual naysayers and argumentative indians in the crowd. All in all a fun first hand experience of the biases that the larger Indian audience has towards Rajinikanth.

We were trying to create a sort progression from avant garde actor to superstar. A combination of non-availability of prints/subtitles along with the theme made us choose Murattu Kaalai as sort of an inflection point.

The problem with "muratu kalai " is the switch between Drama and Action. Track one : Elder brothers struggle / emotion / love to this brother / love interest etc. Track two : Jamindhar / exploitation of farmers/women. How the hero come out sucessfully was not narrated cripsly. But if you diffrentiate these 2 tracks and watch it as a seperate play, it would certainly appeal, as its a good story/action.

Rajinikanth adds 30% to Kalanithi Maran's Sun TV Network revenue 2011-Feb-01
MUMBAI: SO, what powers Sun? Rajinikanth, of course! It’s not one of those email/SMS jokes on the Tamil superstar; Rajini-starrer Robot added a cool 179 crore to the third quarter numbers of Kalanithi Maran’s Sun TV Network , accounting for nearly 30% of the company’s revenues for the period. “It was Rajini’s formidable brand image that did the trick this quarter,” says Ajay Vidyasagar, Chief Operating Officer of Sun TV.
“While there is no official source for box office collections, Robot must have raked in at least 375 crore for us and the trade combined and this is a conservative estimate,” he says. The company had spent 132 crore to make the film.
Sun TV posted a 50% increase in revenues to 607.06 crore during the quarter ended December 2010. The company’s net profit rose 48% to 225.5 crore.
Rajini’s portrayal of superhuman characters earned him superstar status among filmcrazy Tamils while some of the 61-year-old actor’s movies became cult hits even on foreign shores. After a forgettable stint in Hindi films in 1980s, he earned pan-India acceptance after the unprecedented success of Robot.
This was followed by a wave of Rajinikanth jokes that are still being made and circulated through emails and SMSes.
Robot, arguably the biggest Indian film ever, was released on October 1 last year in more than 2,400 screens worldwide, while the movie’s Tamil version Enthiran was released in 1,400 screens in Tamil Nadu.
Aggresive marketing for Rajini film
“This is a huge number for an India movie,” says Mohan Lal, media analyst at the Mumbai office of UK-based Elara Capital Plc.
Sun TV bought the rights of Robot from the original producers Eros Entertainment and Ayngaran International , which backed out citing failures of other projects and global financial crisis. Sun TV’s gamble to produce the most expensive Indian film ever paid off as the movie became a big hit with the audiences.
Robot grossed Rs 62 crore from all versions in the first weekend and Rs 117 crore in the first week, thus becoming the first Indian film to cross this mark in a week. The film went on to become the highest grosser, overtaking Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots.
Part of the huge success was due to the aggressive marketing unleashed by Sun TV. “Robot became the top searched item on Google five days before the movie hit the screens,” says Vidyasagar.
The film gained from the increasing acceptance of masala movies among India’s movie-going public.
“The success of movies such as the ‘Robot’, ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Ghajini’ clearly suggest that the audience is accepting masala movies,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra. “During 1980s, people used to love entertainers without any social messages. That phase seems to be coming back,” he adds.
“There is a subtle change in the mindset of movie makers. Earlier, they used to make movies for the balcony class. Now they are making it for stalls,” says film critic Taran Adarsh . “The spending power of the masses has increased and they (moviemakers) know how to cash in on it.”

The satellite rights for last year's blockbuster Robot ", starring South Indian star Rajinikanth, were sold for $5.5 million.
Combined with home video and audio rights, the maker of "Robot", Sun Pictures studio, is thought to have made $41.6 million, virtually covering production costs even before bumper theatrical sales were counted.

Dallas IFF ’11: Robot – Review
by Jenny Rushing Alme - April 5, 2011 | Email the author
Big budget Bollywood flick a cinematical roller coaster
Where else but Bollywood can you find beloved actors singing and dancing in a romantic action movie about advanced robots? Robot (or Endhiran) is the latest film from writer/director S. Shankar and features one of the biggest stars in Bollywood, Rajnikanth (or just simply Rajni), in dual roles. The film is pure high energy spectacle from start to finish, and a complete joy to watch.
Rajni plays Dr. Vaseegaran, a scientist who has been tirelessly perfecting his humanoid robot to present at the India Robotics Conference and impress his mentor, Dr. Bora. Vasee and his bumbling assistants name the robot Chitti (also played by Rajni). Unfortunately, all the time that Vasee has spent on his robotic creation means that he has been neglecting his girlfriend Sana (Aishwarya Rai), and she is fully prepared to dump him. When she sees the impressive demonstration of Chitti’s skills at the Conference however, she immediately forgives Vasee and begs him to let her borrow Chitti for a few days.
From there, the story takes us on outlandish loops, twists, and turns that can only be found in a Bollywood movie. Dr. Bora has a sinister plan for Chitti involving a German arms dealer and an evil “red chip”. Blinded by his need to exceed the expectations of Dr. Bora, Vasee tries to improve Chitti by giving him human emotions. This leads to the robot being unable to determine which emotion is correctly used in various situations. As he learns to control his emotions, Chitti makes several big emotional mistakes, such as falling desperately in love with Sana, and his jealous desire to keep her to himself and everyone else away from her.
With a record breaking budget,
Robot is the equivalent of a cinematic roller coaster. The action scenes are impressive, especially towards the end after Chitti creates an army of carbon copied robots. Chitti and his army wreak havoc all across the city, and in order to fend off the police, they band together to create the most amazing formations; a helicopter eating cobra, for example. Another scene has Chitti running sideways on the outside of a train in order to save Sana from attackers. And another scene has Chitti flying into a burning building over and over again to rescue the people trapped inside.
Robot is the perfect film for those who want an introduction to Bollywood. It pays homage to many films that Americans are already so familiar with including I, Robot, Terminator 2, and Spider-Man. The action in the film moves quickly – the 155 minute run time literally flies by – with an energetic score by Oscar winning composer A.R. Rahman (Slumgdog Millionaire) serving as the film’s pulse. Robot is Bollywood at its entertaining, enchanting best.

Reportedly, Sun Pictures wanted to set their foot in home video as well, by launching Endhiran in Blu ray. Also, SUN quoted a very high price for Blu ray rights (probably to keep the buyers away) and Ayngaran backed out. I'm not much hopeful of this blu ray releasing.

Sorry folks just completed watching "Making Mr. Right" with great sadness I report , Yes Video is right , Shankar has completely ripped off this movie (atleast the core story) and added Indian masala, songs to make it look like something original . Shankar should be ashamed of himself to feed this off beat 1980s Crap has something he acheived on his own, India's next step towards Sci-Fi Genre.
Wow with this its safe to say I am going to stay away from Shankar's movie too . I am completely dissappointed
truth does hurt !. Rajni sir, Enthiran is not your original Sci-Fi Movie, pl strike that from your biography !

When I was
watching Avatar for the ‘n’th time,
a strange thought came to my
mind, 'Is this film not similar to
Vietnam colony?'
And remember Vietnam colony
released in 1994 and James
Cameroon said that the Avatar
script was ready in 1995 and he
also said that Avatar had many
inspirations from India including
the title (Something fishy).
So lets compare the two stories
side by side:
1.Vietnam Colony: Prabhu and
Koundamani are appointed by a
real estate company to a
notorious colony called
Vietnam colony as this colony
has high real estate values.
Avatar: Sam Worthington is
appointed by the RDA
Corporation to go to Pandora as
the place has a valuable mineral
called unabtomium.
2.Vietnam Colony: Prabhu
disguises himself as a writer and
becomes a member of the colony.
Avatar: Sam disguises himself as a
Navi and becomes a member of
Pandora.
3.Vietnam Colony: Prabhu falls in
love with the heroine (Jujilipa)
who is a resident of Vietnam
colony.
Avatar: Sam falls in love with
Saldana who is a resident of
Pandora
4.Vietnam Colony: While Prabhu
was trying to cheat the colony
residents and throw them out of
the colony, he understands that
the company is doing injustice and
tries to help the residents
Avatar: While Sam was trying to
cheat the Pandora residents , he
understands that the company is
doing injustice and tries to help
the residents.
5.Vietnam Colony: Prabhu finally
joins hands with the colony
residents and fights against his
company.
Avatar: Sam joins hands with the
Navis and fights against his
company.
6.Vietnam colony: At the end of
the movie Prabhu becomes a
Vietnam colony resident.
Avatar: At the end, Sam becomes
a Pandaro resident.
Aren’t the 2 movies similar…?
Even some scenes had similarities.
Remember the scene where the
auto driver gets afraid of the
rowdy (Ravuthar) but Prabhu
thinks that the auto driver is
afraid of him. There is a similar
scene in Avatar (first half)where a
small beast gets afraid
I got this as a fwd. Thought this relevant to post it here to make a point that sometime ppl can think alike.

Sakala , I never pay too much attention to claims unless I see really some creidible arguments/proofs. I was conveniced that shankar did lift heavily in Graphics and props dept etc etc But I felt really sad when "so called biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema" is not based on an original story.
Anyways as you said, no point in discussing this movie now !

Taking Tokyo by storm!
June 13, 2012 By Lakshmi Krupa DC chennai
We are all aware that Japan is the ‘robot’ capital of the world. Just as we know how much they love our very own Superstar. So imagine the frenzy when Rajini plays a double role in a film, one of them being a robot! Endhiran released in Japan recently has evoked some phenomenal response, according to reports on the Internet. The excitement is palpable all over the web with fans from across India, and Chennai in particular, congratulating and celebrating the Superstar’s popularity on social networking sites. The Japanese dubbed version of the movie, starring Aishwarya Rai along with Rajini, is said to be doing exceedingly well. So much so, that the two-hour edited version that was intended for the Japanese audience has now been replaced by the original three-hour version across hundreds of movie screens in the country. “Four weeks gone and still going strong, the movie is still competing with mainstream Japanese films. The song Irumbile/Naina Miley has become an anthem and the Japanese are humming to it despite the language divide,” according to a website that posted pictures of fans wearing Endhiran masks and dressed as Chitti the robot on the streets of Japan.
