Even big shots in tamilnadu, never said these words for any of the fellow actor!
Surya is coming too early to conclusion, that he has proved alot.
He has done some good roles accepted! But intha pechu vendamo nu thonuthu! I think he must do home work for stage talks also

Seriousa dhaan kekkureengala illa thamaasa? Appula makkal namburaangalo illayo, Innikku Tamizh cinemala Surya = Vijay in B.O. pull & only next to Vijay in number of fans. I don't know what are the factors you consider to measure an actor's fan following. Here are few things which I see. Fan clubs, Actors posters, fan posters, hoardings in buplik places like roadside shops, autorickshaws, re-release of hits in single screens. Post-Ayan, I notice a considerable growth in Surya's presence.

Accept ur words, surya is growing!
I seriously accepted this previosly too! But his words in the adukalam music release makes me feel that his confidence is going somewhere else!
That is what i pointed out. But being vijay fan made me not eligible to say that

I thnk i must have a look @ the program again somewhere in the youtube, because i thnk i misinterprated what he meant, If it is the way surya has meant there in no prob NOV.
I thought it was this way:
"Ninga ellam perumapatukalam, nanum(Surya) dhanush fan than nu"
this is how i understood his words, even people around me said that , surya started talking more la nu?
Even some fellow hubbers took the way i have!
So this has to be clarified, some link please!
If i was wrong. My apologies!

Sun T.V is the one to blame, they repeatedly aired that edited bit "neenga ellam perumaipattukalam, naan dhanushoda fan" nu implying that Suriya says since I am one among you, you should be feeling proud of that...... not sure if they intended to portray it that way.......
being a surya admirer nanum was
coz surya never used to be such arrogant nu...... remembered a special show on Kalaingar T.V for Aadhavan where he suggested "Inga niraya en photos maatirukkanga..ithula oru paathiya replace panni Vadivelu photos pottirukkalam...becoz he is the real hero of this movie" nu

summA NOV and TM-ai vambukku izhukkaradhukku
My driver is a major Surya fan and has nothing but baed words for Vijay/Ajith and even Kamal/Rajini. So, yes, I guess, Surya has a constituency created which is perhaps the reason why he says "RC is not my film", meaning he has an image and mass hero build up to be catered to. We all know where that will take him eventually but that's a different issue.

Kandippa Idhu ellam perumai dhan.
He will surely be back at his best very soon, which we [Fans] believe.

Btw, I don't care if Raktha Sarithiram is a flop. More importantly for me, Suriya gave the best performance in the whole of 2010. Thats what I want from him.

U guys are very desperate.. A non family dubbed movie yoada result thaana unga compararision kku kidaichathu :P
antha padathoada opening ae quite good and equal to another mass hero movie.
Just imagine other mass heroes in the same movie, the opening would not be even 3/4 of what Surya got. That is where the difference lies :P

Puthu varushamuma athuvum romba tham kattreenga (ethayavathu koluthi podrathukku)....
Let me ask you --> On what authority do you call fans (whoever it may be) "dumb"?
Just because you (& certain other Pundits) criticize your favourite doesn't put you way & above others. It only shows that you have overrated your favourite (again whoever it may be) who can't raise to your expectation.
OTOH if a certain section of fans get satisfied by their favourite's movies then so be it. It all drills down to what one expects from their favourite right?
In the end we have seen time & again just star value cannot make a movie hit.

why does it sound like forced only for "surya"?...why are chasing surya fans who are doing the same, out of that category? .first of all vijay and ajith both enjoyed success for say only a brief period of time and they dint really rule the film industry - to hand it to them right away. Their success rates has been nothing when compared to the previous era's superstars in their late 20's and 30's.
Now that the mindset of the fans have changed totally and everything is becoming multiplex oriented(with respect to collection) - I dont think a star with highest number of "thoranam" infront of the theatres will have any efffect - unless if he is going to venture into politics.

Anti surya sidela clarityE illai - only vanman and dhwesham that surya is probably getting the same reception their stars got in the past and may get in the future with right choice of films. Bottom line, ajithO vijayO suryavO blockbuster vONumnA, the movie has to strike a chord. Ajth nadichadhukkaaga asal blockbuster aagaliyE? Opening irukkA? Adhai vechukittu enna paNdradhu? Petty ego of fans vENA satisfy AgalAm. Idhula enna perumai. Vijay had consecutive hits few years ago. Right. Adhu mattum star power ippO suryakku adhE nadandhA luckA? IMO, rendumE luck dhaan.
Nov/Tm say clearly that they'll not support kuppai movies from surya. Atleast that side is clear about what they are after.
Venkki, if you get paisa vasool from ajith/vijay movies only, then go ahead and make them blockbusters. Appo En surya padangaL hit Agudhu? Adhaavadhu, pundits are going and whistling and clapping for surya movies and no "real tharai tickettu" is patronising surya moviesA? Ungaluke chippA illai.
You are right, paisa vasool is a valid form of entertainment. Vijay/ajith had the right movies which succeeded for them for a few years. Then it was surya. Trend might change again - idhula there is nothing to be proud of for respective fans.
Also, as i sais, surya hard core is happening - my driver has his own gang of surya fans who follow all lakshanams of rasigar mandra kanmanigaL.
Big actors dumb movie hit anAlum adhE dhaan - En kamal and rajini fans-ai sollaliyA when they cover up for ordinary efforts?

siv.S - same comments apply to Singam patrons, too. nAn dhAn Rajini, Kamal fanskum idhE dhAnE solREn?(nAn periya nAttAmaiyA? valid question. but nAn en view dhAne solla mudiyin ingE?)
Fact is Surya seems to have acquired this sort of fans - I keep quoting my driver. As rabid as Ajith/Vijay fans of the same type. Basically, it is part of your growing up process in TN - cinemakaaranai adharsamA vechukkaradhu oNNum pudhusillaiyE? namma oru correct stage of growing up-la yAru hit padangaLai kodukkaRAngaLO, avainga mEla fix AyidaRom.
Thing is A/V peakla irundhappO andha stage of growthla irundhavanga avainga mEla fix AyittAnga. Suryavukkum adhu ippO nadakkudhu.
This also explains the soft corner I have for Rajini/Kamal - I am more likely to watch any crap they throw at me than of Ajith/Vijay/Surya. What I find funny is "andru Ajith/Vijay seidhadhai dhAnE indru Surya seigiRAr". Yes, so andru Ajith/Vijay seidhadhai vaiththu avargaLukku irukkum (nalla/ketta) peyar Suryavukkum porundhum illaiyA? Sari, ippO RC Flop, KAvalan hit Agudhu. Does that mean Surya is obliterated and Vijay is reinstated? nALaikku ivarukku hit Agum, avarukku fail Agum. idhellAm oru vishayamA?
Thing is A/V peakla irundhappO andha stage of growthla irundhavanga avainga mEla fix AyittAnga. Suryavukkum adhu ippO nadakkudhu. Degrees may vary. idhu ellAm blessing illai, curse. It took an Apoorva SahodarargaL for Kamal to consciously attempt to throw this curse away - although vestiges of it still bother him.
As for dumb fans etc, that is purely a riposte to opening irukkE. nI enna vENumnAlum kudu, nAn pOi pArppEn- - idhu dhAne Opening? That is a curse rather than blessing, idhu rajini kamalukkum apply Agum.

overallA pArththa, to me the most succesful actor/star in TF history is Kamalahaasan.
Time and again, he has attempted to get away from the boxes that his fans attempt to chain him to, failed miserably in terms of BO but still come back and made films that he wanted to and given quality films. He has utilised his BO status like no other star, including the venerable NT, have in the history of TF to give films that raised the bar. Some of these have succeded, too. Which you cannot say for most other stars' fans. NT fans rejected even Kappalottiya Thamizhan, which was packed with vegujana piriya elements. And they ruined him in the 70s patronising the likes of Thrisoolam, for whatever reasons.
Now, that kind of BO pull makes some sense to me - you have a pull, you influence people with that pull. Rajini's pull, OTOH, has been in reality, the other way. He is dancing to his fans' tunes. He gives them "what they want". The fans are pulling him rather than the other way. That is not much of success for me - although from his ambition perspective, it might be.
verumnA, enakku opening irukku, enakku star power irukku, mass irukkunu alattikaradhula enna periya perumai? (including Surya fans)

For this u need to psycho-analyze tamil people. They always have encouraged/enjoyed rivalry among two. MGR-Sivaji, Rajni-Kamal, DMK-ADMK.
There were emergence of Gemini Ganesans, Prabhus, Karthiks, MDMKs, PMKs but the TN ppl have stuck to the twosome, no matter how talented the newcomers are. This will continue with Ajith-Vijay as well.. Even if Surya continues to give BBs and Ajith-Vijays shoot out consecutive flops, u, NOV and Thiru will get replies like this even after years..

Ajay,
The point is Ajith and Vijay are NOT YET the successors of MGR-Shivaji and Rajni- Kamal by considering the BO performance.
Just compare the BO of Ajith - Vijay with the previous year superstars when they were in the same age as Ajith and Vijay
And also the previous year super stars enjoyed phenomenal support from NON-Fanatics/Fans - they were one of the faces of Tamilnadu
But for ajith and Vijay - if you take out their fans....I dont think they enjoy much support from others(neutrals in hub baashai) . They are more or less going in the path of Vijayakanth - Excellent dedicated fanbase but not much outside support...

I am not talking about the fan fight here at all. I am talking about the people who are completely outside that "fan" mindset.
MGR-Sivaji , Kamal - Rajni are much mroe than movie stars. They and their movies has been a part of the lives of tamil people (fans and non-fans including)
But the impact that vijay and Ajith are having is very minimal. They have not yet penetrated into the lives of common tamil people and are just staying inside the fans circle.

VIvs,
Apdi paatha MGR had more penetration into the lives of people than Rajni/Kamal. Still there are people who believe that he is alive.. This will only deteriorate with time as people's wisdom level will rise. But the common mentality of having two choices and fighting for one will remain the same. It has something to do with people's ego.

I disagree. How many common man would just watch Ajith/Vijay's films for the sake of watching them on screen? I wouldn't and I'm as a common as a man can be.
This was different from Kamal/Rajini at that point of time. Antha time-le ninge porendinggela, ungaluku eppadi teriyum- intha mathiri kelvilam ketka kudathu? Very simple example. My dad's side are all avid fans of Kamal and my mom's are all die-hard fans of Rajini. Nevertheless, ask them about any Kamal/Rajini films at that point of time, both parties would say that they have watched those films and enjoyed them too. This is what seems to be missing in Vijay/Aith today. With the kind of movies that the duo has been giving off late, I don't think many non-fans of the two would watch their films without reading reviews/getting feedbacks about those films first.

Simple thing. During his wedding announcement, reporter asks him "can we come to the wedding? vandhA enna paNNuvInga?"
Rajini: "udhaippEn"
And nobody could point a finger at him and cry "arrogance!". He was just too iconic for that. Even the Rajini of today cannot say that - partly this is a funciton of the times we live in but partly, it is also his iconic status then. I mean, could a Mohan have got away with saying it then?

It has something to do with people's ego.
What I mean is Ajith - Vijay has not yet penetrated into the common audience through their movies ..let alone the personal level penetration of MGR.
These two are yet kings among their fans and not not yet conquered the common people..much like Vijyakanth (Sorry HR )
Vijay/Ajith has much popularity than Kamal among common audience. Edho peasanumenu peasadinga. Yaar padama irundaalum nala irundaa taan odum.
Words bolded happened b4 vijay gave consecutive flops, there were friends and family friends of mine, who just go to movies just because it was vijay movie, movies between ghilli-pokiri can be rated so! Even some which i felt just ok, has become blockbusterS!
AJith has also enjoyed such previlage, Comaring Ajith- Vijay with kamal- Rajini is itself not fair, think of the competition level they continously face till date! Which was not much present those days, though u can quote karthick, prabu was there that time, they dint give much competition as surya, karthi, dhanush give this day.
There were only 2 fan division those days either rajini or kamal, but its not the case with vijay and ajith now. In current trend they hold upper hand is wat we discuss here, nobody can object this and the queue up and pre movie hypes of both stars are more or less equal to rajini-kamal releases this days(i accept some time now its not same post release).
THough surya gives variety to entertain, his ultimate aim for sure is not be next kamal, he still wants to get the mass hero name, vikram was the one who lost kamal's place just because he also wanted rajini's place more than kamal's. This can also be end of surya if he tries with 1 or hardly 2 more singams and adhavans

So TM can we conclude like this,
MGR- SHIVAJI
RAJINI-KAMAL

SURYA?
it aint end of career of Vijay's and Ajith's.
Somebody even compared VIJAY - AJITH with yesteryears 3 level heroes, i think its not fair at all!
Is that u ppl want them to retire? Are u ppl say that they shouldnt be given chance to prove themselves and get back on track
Because Rajini and kamal too had worst movie selections @ sometimes i can list them here, but it shouldnt hurt anyone. So stopping here.

Simple Point...
Wise movie selection never fails (now Surya enjoying icon status)
In furue it may get applicable to everyone ,A/V as well...
But the magnitude of the success may be higher than Surya
Also Ajith is very bad in movie selection in the sense he never make wise selection of movies ...accepting craps like tirupathi, alwar,Ji,Anjenaya
Same applies to Vijay as well...
But Surya is very wise and consistent that earned him brand name not just name 'Surya'.This applies to everyone as well
But fan base adds to the magnitude of success if movie is good
//Dont Compare with Rajini/Kamal...

Yes, and all thanks to the selection of films he was doing back then. Even Ajith has many neutral viewers watching his films post Vaalee. But what we are saying is that with the kind of movies V/A are doing
lately, they seem to have lost the neutral fan groups who would watch their movies without any hesitations.

Not only Surya, any actors today who attempts these movies would most likely see the end of their careers..

That said, Dabangg mAdhiri suddenA makkaL multiplex padangaLAla veruththu pOi EdhO mass movie-ya marubadiyum hit AkkinAlum AkkuvAnga. More than quality, it is variety and a break from recent routine is what appeals to people.

naan appadi sollala.. It is still wide open. Those who act smartly in selection would be gaining upper hand. As of now it is Surya. Avvlothaan.. And near future la avaorda projects ellaame on safer side or Super hit materials. Like Ajith and Vijay he is due for his mistakes and may go down suddenly.
As far Ajith, I dont see him coming back strong with few consecutive hits. He is very inconsistent in Selecting scripts / Directors or so.. Moreover he is not showing that much interest towards cinema it seems.
Vijay's case is much better. Sila vishayathula konjam careful aa irunthaa he would be again in Top.
There are few more youngsters who cant be neglected.
IMO going forward all these rival concepts would go down when years go by.

As u said, vijay and ajith still has chances to win. Hope their line up helps them out(think they are promising too).

But Surya is aware of all these and make these movies intentionally to cater to some class of audience...
And Ajith not utilising his charisma in a wise way and unintentionally left few good movies

+1 Actually among the younger group of actors, I had high hopes on Ajith. I really thought he had learned his lesson after the consequtive flops in the form of Rettai Jadai Vayasu, Nesam, Ullasam and the likes of it. Apparently not. Even Mankaatha doesn't sound promising now, what little interest I had on the film has gone after Nagarjuna backed off the film

BUt wy ajith, he acts/acted in GVM type movie(BILLA) nah
I think it must be some other clash, may be GVM wanted to take cruise control altogether, which should have costed Ajith and vijay miss the chance!

Its not style of film making...some mismatch which I dont want to repeat(Have discussed hell a lot times)
But Truth is Gautham is the
200% apt director for Ajith than anyone else given Gautham's style, music sense and Ajit's Charisma
GVM waited to do movie Ajith (Kaakka Kaakka) right from start of career but never happened
Its sad that my favourite actor + music director(ARR) + Director(GVM) combo came to final stage only to end.
Why it is not happening for tirupathi,Aalwar

Yes, you are right. But there got to be some motivation for him to do such things, either money or publicity. 90% of the celebrities are like that and it is quite natural.

Since this is Surya vs Ajith/Vijay, am I to infer that surya does Sosial responsibility for publicity and the other 2 do it for the real good of society, Maddy?
When discussing his career, why are so many reasons being invented to hate him? What exactly has he done to Ajith/Vijay that generates so much hate?

Surya is in the position Ajith/Vijay were a few years back. Fair or unfair?
When Vijay and Ajith were giving their first hits, and consolidating, did they have the same reach as today?
Who knows when Surya consolidates and starts having his Suraas and Asals, he might have his fans arguing at similar level. He has definitely reached where Vijay/Ajith were when they gave their first few hits - yes or no? Did Vijay find success right away? He also needed Vikraman etc to make certain movies which gave him the break right?
But nInga enna solRInga? Surya is giving hits only with good directors. In the initial phase, adhu Ajith/Vijaykkum porundhum dhAnE?
Basically, compare surya of today with Ajith/Vijay of their second phase, when they moved from amaravathys and rasigans to poove unakkaga and vaalis.
As I said, looking at my driver and co., it is eminently possible that Surya ends up where Vijay and Ajith are today. I see that as a bad situation while i guess a lot of you see it as a postivie situation and hence want to deny it.

i didnt invoke Ajith/vijay at all - i invoked kamal, ARR and IR's charity measures - so i donno wat u want to infer.........ur boxing of celeb charity works into 2 categories is untrue, we have good examples in many many other people........and i didnt even say surya is wrong or unethical or acting cheap here - i just put that as a point for his penchant for publicity hence getting whistles/claps in theaters after so much publicity cannot be taken as a big credit - this was initially reply to sakala's post reg surya getting more claps than kamal in theaters..........
surya is a plastic actor, much below karthi or Dhanush for me - and i stand there since surya hasnt given me enough evidence.....as far as his BO pull and mass - i would wait for field related guys like Nerd, Bala, Anban to certify his growth.........i dont think anyone else would have a clearer view apart from them.....
are we discussing his career or acting skills here?? sorry, i dont think so and hate is too strong a word - i still love to choose louuuu though it sounds tacky and sugary

Plum, i understand u r doing this for fun but still u must understand Ajith/vijay normally work with new/untested directors - Ajith's biggest hits in 90s was with agathiyan and s.j.suryah - newbies........its not a virtue but ur assessment of facts is completely wrong IMO

Maddy,
I think noone here told surya has more dedicated fans than ajith/vijay. Everyone knows ajith/vijay has more ahrdcore fans than surya.
But who among these people have more number people readily watching their movies outside this fans circle ? that was discussed in the morning...common audience.
infact Plum was arguing against this hardcore fanatics.
there is nothing wrong if you find him as a plastic actor - I find ajith's dialogue delivery childish and Vijays mannerisms comic. That depends upon the taste..isnt it?..

I also work for a company which is just near to the theatre. ANd i have seen more theatres in chennai, also in some places of kanchipuram and vellore. its not true that surya has more flex! Only vijay and ajith has more fans clubs next to rajini. and they still do their responsibility of keeping hoardings!
U can check that this pongal!

i guess suryar wont become ajith vijay of today, in future. he has gautams, ARMurugadosses and RamgopalVarma for help and he himself has some talent.
I somehow feel that the amount of charisma of vijay ajith, which gaurants them an above average opening is not there for surya and this guy still manages with lots of other stuffs(continuous hits, masala combos, ferfamans even in masala movies like singam, phemili banner films) at the other end he doesnt overplays even in those masala films like jumping on tran etc or over buildup and punch dialogs etc.
In future, only surya looks promising in both ways

Rajini - most fans in TN, so obviously #1 in flex etc.
Kamal - Vijay fans posting here are undermining his BO pull and the flex. Don't know if they had seen theaters which screened Aalavanthan. 10A-kkum arumaiyaana response-nu kELvippatten. And obviously you cant expect the same for MMAs and UPOs. In fact Hey raam-kku trichy kalai arangathula, which apparently is the biggest theater *campus* bayangaramaana decorations. Kamal fans can throw more light.
Surya - AFAIK, in chennai most of the flex are directly by him. Kisu kisu expert Ajay can confirm. He does have a growing fan base but thats not even 20% of A/V. He has a total of 3 fan clubs in Trichy. And before Singam, none of his other hits (like VA, Kakka Kakka) penetrated B and C. But he is the only star who enjoys support from all sections of fans. For ex, a/v films only the concerned fans watch it and only if the reports are exceptional (like say a Billa) the general audience go watch the film. And Surya is very careful in choosing his directors, which in a way is good. And in the USA, Surya is clearly the #3 right behind Rajini and Kamal (read Kamal's mass films), simply because of the reason I quoted above - general audience.

Plum, I can say Surya = Gemini Ganesan. Nothing more. And, I hate both of them. (Hate is yes, a strong word. But they are worth it)
I don't hate him because he is a lethal weapon to A/V's current positions in future.
A/V do something which naturally comes to them no matter what, unlike Surya who stresses too much and shows that he tries too hard on screen.
His exclusive fans, who aren't fans of any other actor might only be half of his so-called fanbase who will not choose him at gunpoint. With such pulling power, he is definitely not going to have more flex banners than A/V.

Two reasons why I feel surya have a slight edge over Ajith/Vijay are he is talented than both of them (IMHO) and so if he gets an oppurtunity from any big director..he can tune himself according to that role...and hence he will get those oppurtunities from those big directors..

Ok this is the question to u! DO u think Surya can justify the roles given to him perfectly. Being kamal fan i think u are the right person to say. In any movie surya has done so far did u ever feel he is doing more justice to role he does. Even VA i was not convinced, any of my friends never said he acted extra ordinary!! He is trying to act! Can u compare aged character done by surya s anywhere near indian aged kamal. Surya is just using the current situation, no biggies giving good movies, he is taking that chance with good movies. Cant accept him as great actor! its too early for that!
I will say in that aspect Vikram is great actor who is perfect for roles adaptability!

Karthik kku Surya fans periya banners ellaam vachchaanga for Aayiraththil Oruvan. That is the matter. In Arakonam which is C Center, i had never returned from getting a seat in past 10 years. In fact seen Shivaji, Dasa in opening week ends. But Aadhavan was the first movie i came returning as i could not get seats. Thing is in C centers they wont show houseful boards. They would allow as many people. They can stand or sit in tharai.
Saying this, if we consider hard core fans like thoranam kattuvoars, etc.. Surya definitely not in the likes of Vijay and Ajith. May not be even half. BTW that section of audience is not even 10%. His strength is he is liked by all sections of movie goers. If u see outside hub even many Vijay and Ajith fans like Surya too and the processing of Change of icon is slowly happening
Check with your office colleagues, outsiders.. family, etc Surya >>>>>>> Vijay >>> Ajith. That is the fact.
And Days are changing. These hard core fans alone dont guarantee the best opening itself. Check for the opening of Aathavan, Singam, Sura, Vettai and Asal... Surya >> Vijay >> Ajith.Among these except Asal all are by family. So we cant escape by saying because of family the opening is best.
Why past. Check the future. 7aam Arivu's Opening >>> Mangathaa Opening. I bet. Anyone ready for challenge? Both from the family. Well Murugadoss >>> Venkat. But if u say Ajith is mass, then he can over come Murugadoss.

And Surya is very careful in choosing his directors, which in a way is good. And in the USA, Surya is clearly the #3 right behind Rajini and Kamal (read Kamal's mass films), simply because of the reason I quoted above - general audience.
thanks Nerd, just what i thought.......

There was times when Danush gave 3 HITS and was considered huge that time. Surya is like one now! Okay now mycolleagues may say surya is better, in 2 or 3 years another person will replace surya, but Vijay and ajith will hold the same fans + new ones if they do better from now on!
I am nt the right person to accept the challenge u have posed but i am sure, no way surya is going to gain a fans base as ajith has right now, at any point in his career. May be my colleagues, friends who just watch movies as movies will accept they like surya. But we are in tamilnadu where certain ppl see actors more than anything, like a real heroes, which vijay and ajith has already reached, just now in their bad times saying no is not going to hide the truth. My point and challenge is no point in time surya is going to earn such fans

If i not mistaken, vettaikaran got huge opening then any of surya latest movies..i still remember during 80s when kamal and rajini dominating, there was actor called mohan who steal show with back to back hits. For current generation Surya resemble as mohan. But im more confident he will retain his position that mohon could not. Now people questioning vijay/ajith stardom bcoz of their current failures. But they only need a hit to bring them to their previous position and with selection n good scrip in future sure they going to be next generation of rajini/kamal..because no one can question their mass fan base after rajini/kamal..

As far certain manipulations via Magazines / websites, banner arrangement via money at least in certain places (initial days), fake movie running for 50/100 days across several centers and trying to improve / show popularity via different means and so on.. except Kamal and Ajith every other mass actors are involved directly or indirectly. Kamal kooda initial days la eppadinnu therila. IMO Ajith is the most honest in that area from what i heard / seen

Thanks for the Kamal suffort.
"Virumaandi" and "VV" can also be included in that list for the "marana mass" response in the theatre.
Adding my fersonal experience. Have seen both those movies (on a week day, noon show) in Sathyam. "karkha Karkha" saang - GVM's fanboy tribute to Kamal - had a superb response in the theatre. In Virumandi, Kamal doesn't make an entry until ~20 min pretty much adding to the restless-ness of the audience. The moment one of his pangaali's shout's "Singapore Machan" and we see a "beefy" Viruman jumping from the pole top - there was a thunderous, ear deafening applause that lasted all the way until the end of "Kobulla poove suthi" song.
Those experienes took me back to the good old cinema theatre days of SKV, Guru, TTT, Kaakhi Chattai etc.

It is quite obvious that Surya has done nothing to match Kamal. But how does that make Vijay/Ajith better than Surya in acting?
Ok He is more versatile than Ajith/vijay.....
How does that mean he has more Boxoffice pull than A/V(dont say his recent hit records)?
Even weak phase of Ajith/Vijay career is an benchmark to Strong phase of surya career?..That gives you answer

I thought we were initially talking about which actor has more neutral audience today??? Clearly I was wrong. Having cut-outs for stars, paal abhishegam, special prayers, whistle, claps etc are definitely the works of fans, so what's the whole point of bringing them to this topic?
I agree that Surya has lesser fans than A/V, I'm also inclined to believe that he seeks publicity for himself, but the point is does he have more neutral audiences/common people watching his films than A/V? I believe so. It could be either through WOM or through audiences' confidence on the sort of films he does, but the fact is he's doing a good job in selecting his films which pays off handsomely.
V/A had neutral audiences yes. And that came post Vaalee/Poove Unakaga period. But the problem with both, is that they are more inclined to satisfy their fan's taste rather than thinking out of the circle. Which is the reason why some of their films tend to do badly in the box-office. Fans may be instrumental in giving you a huge opening but if the films have no content, even fans would think twice of watching repeated shows of the film.
This is where Surya scores big. He gives movies to satisfy the larger group. People who are not his fans, me included, have no hesitation to watch his films. Movies like Ayan, Ghajini, Kaaka Kaaka are not your normal mass films. And he gains support from the larger public through movies like these. You need to buy that confidence from the public. Like I mentioned previously, Kamal and Rajini have their own set of fans in their younger days. But the beauty is that even people who are not their fans wouldn't hesitate to watch and enjoy their films. Such were the sort of movies they have given at that point of time. Likewise Surya is slowly getting the non-fans to watch and enjoy his films too.
Regardless of Surya having bigger fan groups/bigger opening etc, the fact is, his films are bigger hits than most other actors. And like Plum said, yes, Surya is where A/V were when Poove Unakaga/Vaalee came. He has the normal audience' confidence for now. And if he continues doing the kind of films he has done lately, then there's no doubt he will gain more fan support, even to the extent of what V/A have at this moment.

Exactly, Vikram was like that too.
For me it first it was Vijay then Ajit then Vikram and now Surya.Hope Surya also will do the same mistake done by others.

Music is definitely one of the factor for a movie to become hit, but to call it as a major factor is pretty lame, I must say.
Appadi partha, the major factor of Vaalee becoming big hit is because of Deva's music. The same goes for S A Rajkumar for Poove Unakaga, right? Can I imply that the script , direction, acting play smaller role in the films' success then?

Yes, I too watched the films for ARR. But for repeated watching which is essential in making a movie a success, all other factors (direction, script, acting) play a bigger role no? Like I said, music is a factor to bring audience to the theater but it's not the major factor in making a movie a success. At least, it wasn't in Surya's movies today.

Even Deva and S A Rajkumar gave big hits for A/V in the past. Would you talk about them when talking about A/V's films?
yes, neutral audience-nnu varumbodhu,

As far in TFI, u need courage to do such roles, we are not in Hollywood, there ppl celebrate great acting, but here only few see acting rest will make fun if a actor does such roles, i was awestruck to see a brilliant performance by ajith in that movie.

Again I reiterate that HJ is among the factors, like YSR for Simbu and Karthi. But audiences' are not going to watch a movie for 10-20 times just for the songs, if all other factors are not good. Ayan/Kaakha Kaakha becoming hits are because the final presentation of the films themselves were good. The same goes to any Vijay or Ajith movies. Bharadwaj composes many hit songs for Ajith's films. Mani Sharma gave big hits for Vijay's films. Their names were hardly brought out in discussing the success of the films. Thus I don't understand why you only attribute Surya's films success to HJ or why we have to discuss HJ specifically when it comes to Surya's films.

Yes, that was rather bold of Ajith to act in such a character. In fact, I would say it was that particular acting of Ajith that played a major role in the success of the film. Fans or not, people always seek for something different in movies.

Ingga enna exam-a nadattikitirukkom. It was effeminate, but not homosexual, just like what Ajith's character attempted to prove. I didn't dig this performance, I preferred the murderous Ajith in that film. Very well done, very soulful performance. This one was showy!

There is nothing that takes away NT's greatness. But I am sure even if some X or Y had played the other lead, Ajith would've accepted this role. I am also sure that no one else in TFM would've accepted the same role. Period.

Ajit/Vijay/Surya/Arya/Whoever - they simply are not in the class of R/K or MG/SG. All of them had short winning streaks punctuated by hapless, long sequence of helpless agony watching over failure after failure. They all need bleddy luck to get going.
The arguments ad-infinitum have been
1) Surya took 15 movies to give first hit - and compare Vijay's tirumalai phase with Surya's initial phase. When you should be comparing Vijay's dhoddabedda rottula muttai barotta phase with Surya's initial phase. Sendhoorapandi with Periyanna is the right comparison but the comparison being made was Periyanna with Thirumalai or Ghilli.
2) Vijay's current phase being compared with Surya's current phase. The right comparison is with Vijay's poove unakkaga-lovetoday-KM phase
3) Vijay's current phase with Surya's future phase where he goes through 2-3 years with commercial duds - that remains to be seen what happens to his so called opening. As many argued, and I believe, the opening is not a factor in creating blockbusters so in reality, it is not that big a base. Whether Surya can create that small base over the next few years - remains to be seen. No point pre-empting that now - 1 & 2 are definite known happened events which can be compared.
The edge Surya has over Vijay, especially, is he has definitely shown better acting skills and versatility. The edge Surya has over Ajith is that even if Surya makes 10 bad choices and has 10 flops, Ajith will make 15 equally bad choices, and will be in a worse position, unless luck turns corners for him.
I am not as admiring of Surya as TM/NOV, and I am of the opinion that 7th Arivu is not an enticing
prospect. I dont think he is going in the right direction. I predict he'll end up in A/V's current situation in another 2 years.
Last but not the least, I disbelievingly watched as Surya outscored Kamal 100-1 in hootcount, whistlecount in the titles and intro scenes of MMA. Are you saying Surya plants these people in every show of a movie in which he appears for 5 minutes to show his mass?

Yes, but with Sivaji, you know that he's capable of doing any roles. Even if he had played an effeminate role, you wouldn't be "Oh wow, I didn't know Sivaji could do this??" But with the other actors, it's a different story altogether. Ajith in Godfather was something totally unexpected and it was a pleasant surprise. He's a good actor no doubt but doing something like this, when all other actors are more keen in showing their heroism, is definitely commendable.

It wasn't bold. Kasi and Perazhagan were big hits in the original language. And I don't think Vikram would have done Pithamagan if not for Bala's direction.
In the case of Godfather, it was not a role that most actors (who want to portray themselves as top heroes) would act. It was a gamble especially for Ajith at that time. The role could either bring him to great heights or bring him down even. Glad that it was the former.

Maybe I'm overestimating the reaction of audience to such a role. But I always felt that TFI shows keenness in celebrating the heroism of an actor. Thus, doing a role that is completely opposite of the "heroism" tag was risky. And Ajith was no Sivaji or Kamal to do any unconventional roles and get applauded for them.

Scale, Godfather was his first hit since Villain, and in between he had close to 6-7 flops. To release a movie like Godfather at that point of time is definitely risky for any actors.

Sorry Rakesh & Scale, I disagree vehemently. It takes lots of guts to do what Ajith does. You can dismiss it easily, but its not your rice bowl that will be affected.
You liking/disliking the portrayal is not the issue.
Sivaji not doing it doesnt mean he cannot do it. In those days, such things were not in cinema.
I maintain that NO actor in the history of Tamil cinema has attempted such a role as Ajith in Varalaru.

He had a series of hits which moved him from an also-ran young actor to someone with BO clout.
I think the list reads Poove Unakkaga, Love Today, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, Ninaithen Vandhaai, Piriyamudan and a couple more. The train was halted, appropriately, by his father with that movie with NT.

Like I said, Sivaji and Kamal doing such roles are not going to be a surprise, in fact they hold a place where they have been and would be lauded for every unconventional roles they do. Such were their position in TFI.
But to see an actor like Ajith doing the same is definitely a surprise and it's a gamble, given the situation and position he was at that point of time. Granted, anyone could have done the role to perfection, but how many would have dared to do it in the first place?

And this is why ajith and vijay stays away from exprementation, they dont get the good result(Even ajith dint get better ack for that role) when they try anything away from their normal track!
So they themselves found a formula and they carried it till date! now ppl are bored with that formula. Soon they will find another formula for themselves and will stick to it some years from the time they find it!

He told the story to Rajini as well.
not exactly same story....instead of effeminite character in flashback he had some gangster type flashback...Rajini couldnt do the role as it had many resemblance to Baasha........
No, the story was same,KSR made some changes to suit Ajith, infact the story was by Alaudin director ravi i guess.
Yes, he did say the story to Rajini and only asked for his opinion. And later after watching the movie, Rajini said Ajith had done extremely well, I wish I could have acted in it. Adhu chummaa sonnadhu dhaan (I mean I could have acted) but seriously, sathyamaa suit aavaadhu. To play such a character you need to have a pretty face. Rajinikkum adhukkum remmbba dhooram.
