UTP being a non-family film-which-is-a-lousy-remake will certainly flop. Pinning hopes on IMMI and Aadukalam. Mappillai is a sun pics release, so will do good I guess.

I think they have their share of flops too like Thenavettu, Thillalangadi, Sura etc. Just that Dhanush being a 'mass' actor acting in a decent, proven storyline, aided by aggressive marketing, the chances of this one failing is less.

‘Uthamaputhiran’ in 600 theatres
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, October 27, 2010
Dhanush is getting ready for one of his biggest releases ever. His forthcoming film ‘Uthamaputhiran’, which is set to hit the screens on Deepavali day, will be released in 600 cinema halls in Tamil Nadu alone.
“The film has been shaped up in such a way that it would be liked by one and all irrespective of what age or section they belong to. Hence the producers and distributors are planning such a big release”, sources in the know say.
Directed by Mithran R Jawahar, Dhanush’s lucky mascot, the film, which is a remake of Telugu blockbuster ‘Ready’, is produced by N V Mohan Apparao and G Ramesh on Balaji Studios banner.
“The on-screen chemistry between Dhanush and Genelia is great. Action scenes will be one of the highlights of ‘Uthamaputhiran’ while comedy portions involving Dhanush and his Padikadhavan co-star Vivek will bring the roof down”, sources add.

UTHAMA PUTHIRAN – THE ONLY BIG BUDGET FILM
Uthama Puthiran is the only big budget film to be released this Diwali. This Dhanush-Genelia starrer was a blockbuster in Telugu, which had Ram and Genelia in lead roles.
The film’s status among the Tollywood audiences has raised an expectation that UP would be a hit in Tamil too.
Mithran Jawahar who has directed this film says that he has changed the film to suit our audience and Dhanush’s fans.
UP will be released all over Tamil Nadu in about 600 theatres, reveals a source from Kollywood.

UTHAMA PUTHIRAN MOVIE PREVIEW
http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-mov...e-preview.html
Starring: Dhanush, Genelia D'Souza, K. Bhagyaraj, Vivek.
Direction: Mithran R. Jawahar
Music: Vijay Antony
Production: Mohan Appa Rao
Mithran Jawahar’s third directorial venture Uthama Puthiran, a Diwali bonanza, is actor Dhanush’s third movie teaming with MJ and it also happens to be the director’s third consecutive Telugu remake following his earlier two, Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Kutty.
Uthama Puthiran, the remake of Tollywood’s 2008 release Ready has a strong star cast with Dhanush, Genelia, Vivek, Karunas, Bhagyaraj, Mayilsamy, Uma Padmanabhan, etc.
‘Ready’ had Genelia play the female lead. ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ was a remake of ‘Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule’ and ‘Kutty’ was the remake of ‘Arya’. Mithran’s first story Yaaradi Nee Mohini revolved around a jumbo joint family beautifully woven with all emotions true to so many relatives living under the same roof. His next movie Kutty had a fine share of romance and comedy well blended. So what really would this Diwali release hover around? According to the Director, it is drafted purely on the lines of clean
entertainment with comedy, love and action running through. This genre is one that well suits Dhanush always. So it is sure to gear up viewers’ Diwali celebration mood and be the right gift to Dhanush fans.
To quizzes and questions as to why it’s Dhanush as the choice always, Mithran’s candid response is that they share a very good understanding and if wavelengths match sans any ego, things work pretty better. Anyhow he denies any sentiment tagged on.
Vivek plays a slightly elderly role which he is supposed to have hesitated initially and then accepted because of Dhanush’s special request. Padikkathavan saw the two of them, Dhanush and Vivek, team up well and probably that’s why probably Dhanush would have been particular in having Vivek in the pivotal role. A fair part of this movie has been shot in Tirunelveli and Chennai.
This is a creation from Balaji Studios Pvt Ltd, the production house of Mohan Appa Rao and T Ramesh. The story and script is the imagination of writer Gopimohan of Tollywood. Vijay Antony’s music is already creating ripples around and we have to be patient to see how well the songs gel with the story and how best they have been picturised.
The audio release of Uthama Puthiran was held earlier this month in Chennai in the presence of director KS Ravi Kumar and producers RB Choudhary and Sun Pictures’ Hans Raj Saxena. Only the title will trigger memories of the 1958 blockbuster hit, especially so to staunch Sivaji fans. Thus expectations may also be high, who knows? Even the fresh Dhanush-Genelia combo may weave a new magic as a crowd puller.
If frequencies match well, the same team can keep creating success stories one after the other. Let’s wait and watch what is in store from this duo, Mithran and Dhanush, untiringly teaming for the third time. If names can create magic then the 1958 success story of Uthama Puthiran is bound to recur.

D FOR DIWALI, U FOR UTHAMAPUTHIRAN
http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-mov...-03-11-10.html
Uthamaputhiran has been certified by the Censor Board with a clean U. The film is a thorough family entertainer with heavy doses of comedy and this has earned the film a U certificate. Vivek, the comedian in this film, has will have the laughing all the time, with his antics.
In a press meet held by the Uthamaputhiran team, Vivek said that his character is named Emotional Ekambaram.
Dhanush said that it a clean love story and the on-screen chemistry between him and Genelia has come out well.

I am very happy guys to hear that this film is getting all positive reviews and declaredas a great family entertainer. After a long time I'm hearing behindwoods say that we have been missing a good family movie like this in Tamil Cinema for such a long time. Congrats to Dhanush, Vivek, Genelia and the Whole Uthama Puthiran team! Looking forward to watching this awesome flick

After the magnificent Enthiran this is the next big project that came out and It must be really satisfying for the Superstar to hear that his son in law's movie is once again a big success.

Out of the newer genration actors like Bharat, prasanna, vinay, aarya, jeeva and many more Dhanush is the best period. He has got real talent. We are talking about an actor that many people did not like because of his skinny street like roadside payyan look. Many said that this boy won't succeed in beginning but he proved everyone wrong with just one powerful skill of his "acting". Dhanush is one of those few heroes who actually has something called real acting talent and has managed to become a big star plainly from just that. It goes to show that you don't need a six pack or dress well to be an actor if you really possess the skill called acting. I'm not saying these things don't help for roles but what I am emphasizhing is there are many actors in our industry who think they they can solely survive with those things. If anyone here says Dhanush is not a good actor then they truly don't understand what acting is. The superstar is very fortunate to have such a son in law. I hope Dhanush will get more opportunities togrow within his career and I wish him all the best in all his future endeavours.

This movie is a complete laugh riot.. and a total family entertainer..
First half comedy was taken care by Srinath along with Arthi..
Second half by Vivek(he comes in only 2nd half) and others..

Vivek as Emoshonal Ekambaram
Nothing great from the lead actors.. but co-stars did their part well..
I didnt like any songs from this movie.. felt it was dragging because of the songs.. Vijay Antony
i think the film is nearly 3 hours

but never felt dragging in second half..
On the whole the film is enjoyable minus the songs..

Uthamaputhiran leads Diwali race!
Dhnaush,Genelia,Uthamaputhiran
On Diwali day (November 5) five Tamil films released - Chithira Poove, Mynaa, Uthamaputhiran, Va Quarter Cutting and Vallakottai.
Among them Uthamaputhiran has taken the early lead, with a good opening on day one.
A spokesperson of Balaji Studios, the producers of Uthamaputhiran said: "The opening has been super from all over Tamil Nadu on the release day. The reports from Chennai multiplexes to single screens in Madurai, Salem, Theni and other places has been positive, people are loving it. The best part of it is that family audiences are lapping it up, which means a sure fire hit."
Meenakshi Sundaram of Mayajaal Multiplex says: "Uthamaputhiran carries decent reports and revenue wise it is the number one on Diwali day. Please note it is the only star film released for the festival."
Among the other releases Prabhu Solomon's Mynaa, carries "very good reports", but since it has all newcomers will take time to stabilize. In the long run it may turn out to be a sleeper hit.

Sreedhar Pillai | TNN
With his Uthamaput hiran turning out to be a hit at the box-office,it looks like Dhanushs Midas touch at the box-office is only growing stronger. The trade has declared it as the number one film during the festival weekend (Nov 5 to 7) and claims the son-in-law has toppled his father-in-law at the Deepavali box-office.
Suddenly,Dhanush is all over the place. He seems to speak less as always, but manages to say quite a bit.In an exclusive interview to CT,Dhanush says,I cant ask for more.Uthamaputhiran has reached its target audiences the family crowd and children in particular.People are enjoying my comic interlude with Vivekh in the film.It is a pucca festival film, and is being lapped up by the masses.
Says film distributor,Abirami Ramanathan,I would classify Uthamaputhiran as a universal hit.The film has netted approximately 58 lakhs in three days from Chennai city and another Rs 67 lakhs from Salem area, and is being liked by the family audiences especially for the comedy scenes.
Meanwhile,Dhanush has more reasons to celebrate as the audio of his long-in-the-making Aadukalam is being released today.Says Dhanush,Aadukalam is my dream film.Ive worked really worked hard for it.I play Karuppu,a character close to my heart. The film is set on the outskirts of Madurai and is about a particular community and the crisis within.Director Vetrimaran is sure to get critical as well as box-office recognition with the film.
The star adds that the highlight of the film will be its fresh content and the performance of the lead actors. He says poet Jayabalan, who is playing a pivotal role in the film,is going to be the surprise packet and his face is a big plus for the film, especially those powerful eyes.On heroine Taapsee,he says,She plays an Anglo-Indian girl and my love interest. And hes kicked about the films music, composed by G V Prakash. We rocked in Polladhavan, and the music in this film is far superior.GV has come out with soothing melodies and a mass number, he gushes.
The actor is also excited about his new film Vengai with mass movie maker Hari, for which he will start shooting later this month.Says Dhanush,Im doing my first film with Hari sir,a director who I was very keen to work with.Im teaming up with Tamannaah once again after Padikkathavan.Raj Kiran and Ganja Karuppu will be playing important roles in this mass entertainer. Dhanush reveals that after todays audio launch,he is going to take a much-deserved break for a week to an exotic holiday resort abroad with his family.

Few initial scenes and few vivek scenes were only good. Remaining is boring and dreaging.
I liked 'Idicha pacharasi' song.'Ussumalarasey' is OK. Genelia is still in SS hangover?
Dhanush did his best. Vivek is good withou talking much. Villians were irritating and climax was very dragging. A neat family movie.

Uthama Puthiran Official Review Thread!
Uthama Puthiran Late Review!
Hi guys couldn't find the official uthama puthiran thread so created this since i saw the film a little bit late. Just finished watching uthamaputhiran finally on original DVD.. Happy to say tht the movie rocks to the core after a long time I'm seeing a good romantic comedy in Tamil and this is def mithran jawahar's best movie with dhanush. This film is a laugh riot and rocks to the core. I can happily say that after the release of thiruvilayadal arambam this is the next dhanush movie I fully enjoyed. I was very pleased with everybody's performance in this movie including ashish vidyarathi, dhanush, genelia, bhagyaraj, and the other villain.
I think bhagyaraj gave a very natural performance throughout the movie like a professional. Mayilsamy also did a good job for the portions he had to play and i think for the first time Asish Vidyarathi actually gave a different sort of performance where he excelled in comedy. Though this is not one of vivek's stronger films i can appreciate his effort to try out something different and play dhanush's uncle... not his best but still decent. Even Dhanush has tried something different and played a character where he doesn't have too much of the usual dhanush characteristics like getting scoldings from dad, not studying, and fooling around etc. Hats of to the whole team for churning out an fantastic entertainer for everyone. Hoping to see more good family films like this in tamil cinema for the future.
FINAL VERDICT: EXCELLENT FEEL GOOD COMEDY ENTERTAINER!

One thing I felt was they didn't want to utilize dhanush fully in this movie for some reason his performance was a little underplayed on purpose i feel maybe to try to make him seem different in this movie i guess.
