Director Sasikumar, it seems, is particular about extending the success streak he is enjoying at the moment.
The man, who shot to limelight with his Subramaniapuram, followed it with Pasanga and Nadodigal. While he chose to direct and act in Subramaniapuram, he produced Pasanga and acted in Nadodigal. Now, he seems to have reverted to his first love — direction in his next venture titled Eesan. Featuring Samudrakani, Vaibhav, A L Azhagappan, Abhinaya and Aparna, Eesan will showcase the night life of Chennai. Says Sasikumar, "Samudrakani, who directed Nadodigal, plays the role of an honest cop in my film while Vaibhav plays the role of a college student. Music for the film is by James Vasanthan."
There were rumours that the movie had been titled Nagaram. Point this out to him and he responds saying, "Although I had the script ready while doing Nadodigal itself, I had not decided on a title when we began work on this project. However, rumours began doing the rounds that I had chosen to call it Nagaram."
Draw his attention to the bond that he shares with actor Vikram, especially after the latter chose to walk out of the project which he was supposed to produce and he replies, "Vikram, in an interview, had referred to me as a friend. I will go one step further and call him a sweet friend. It is true that I was to direct and he was to produce this film. But he wasn't the only producer and it was their first film. So, they were a little apprehensive about the production costs and chose to pull out. We parted as good friends."
The man, who is busy making arrangements for getting his film released in December, has a new trendy hairstyle. Quiz him about it and he grins, "Oh! That's for my role in the film Porali, being directed by Samudrakani. That's next!"

K BALACHANDER: “AMEER HAS DECEIVED ME”
Nov 20, 2010
The audio launch of Eesan took place as planned at Sathyam Cinemas on November 19th, 2010 with the screening of two songs – a disco and a gana song as well as the trailer. It was earlier announced that Rama Narayanan, Bala and Ameer from the Tamil film industry, Telugu director Thiruvikram, Malayalam filmmaker Renjith, Kannada director Yograj Bhat and Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap would participate in this event.
All the directors, except Thiruvikram made it to the venue as his flight was delayed.
Speaking at this event, Yograj Bhatt said that he is happy to be a part of such an audio launch. Equating each of the directors present on the dais to that of the Indian cricketers, he said that Bala can be termed as Sachin Tendulkar in the film industry as he has proved to be an all rounder. Bhatt also compared other directors to Dravid, Dhoni etc. He likened himself to Harbhajan Singh which received applause from the audience.
Renjith said that the Malayalam film industry is studying the Tamil film industry and learning a lot from it.
Anurag Kashyap revealed that he requested a DVD of Subramaniapuram as he has drawn inspiration from that film. He added that directors like Sasi Kumar, Bala and Ameer impress him.
In an interesting development, Ameer had to persuade the legendary director K Balachander to come on stage. KB had extracted a promise from Sasi Kumar before arriving at the venue that he wanted to watch the audio launch from the audiences’ gallery, as going on stage makes him feel imprisoned. To this, Ameer said that promises are meant to be broken and had KB sir on the dais.
Talking about the latest trend in Kollywood films – kuthu songs – Ameer said that Bala and he did not want to glorify kuthu songs in their films but Sasi is including them for commercial success.
When his turn to take on the mike came, director K Balachandar said that Ameer has deceived him by having him break the promise. The director said that he is jealous of the current breed of directors when he thinks why such ideas, which are followed now, did not occur to him 10 years ago. KB said that many young directors ask to be trained under him for at least ten days but it should be the other way round as he has a lot to learn from the youngsters. He pointed out that he wants to compete with the current generation in filmmaking but age does not permit him anymore.

Both films that featured Sasikumar earlier (Subramanyapuram / nAdOdikaL) were not village stories either. One happens in a Madurai suburb and another in TN "towns" (Rajapalayam / Karur etc). Neither had any kind of village sentiments / stereotypes.
So, branding Sasikumar as a "village" movie fellow isn't correct

Review - Easan
December 17th, 2010
Banner: Company Productions
Production:
Sasikumar
Direction:
Sasikumar
Star-
casts:
Samuthirakkani,
A.L.
Azhagappan, Vaibhav, Abhinaya,
Aparna and others.
Music: James Vasanthan
Before analyzing the film ‘Easan’,
let’s make it clear with few
aspects. Yes, the film was
reported to be a remake of
Hollywood thriller ‘Harry Brown’,
which is absolutely false. Maybe,
the ‘seeking vengeance’ factor
can be regarded as the only
commonality between these films
while there is nothing to strike
the similarities with.
The film
focuses into the City life of
Chennai and how the people
from village and small towns are
easily destroyed by its bad
influences.
Having described the emotions
of friendship, love and betrayal in
the backdrops of Madurai,
Sasikumar takes a new route into
the roads, pubs and night lives of
Chennaites and how the rich
brats are spoiling their lives.
Chezhian (Vaibhav), son of
politician Deva Nayagam (A.L.
Azhagappan) is involved into the
usual rituals of a high class
society. He even affords to
influence his father and release
his pals, who were mercilessly
responsible for the death of a
girl. He falls in love with a
beautiful rich girl Reshma
(Aparna), daughter of Karnataka
based rich business icon Shivaraj
Hegde. As a politician, Deva
Nayagam plans of fixing
marriage alliance between his
son and Reshma so that he can
acquire more properties from
him. But these two are deeply in
love and are so happy about the
marriage. But all of sudden,
Chezhian is brought in a territory
of godown and is hit by a
mysterious person and his friend
Vinod is killed in hospital with
the wrong prescription of
medicine. ACP Sangayya
(Samuthirakkani) is assigned
with the mission of getting hold
of person responsible for the
murders.
Samuthirakkani performed
extraordinarily as a baddie in the
film ‘Subramaniapuram’ and this
time, he plays a different sort of
hero role in ‘Easan’.
Mark our
words! He has done such a
fantastic job and all thanks to
Sasikumar and Samuthirakkani
hard work and research on
inheriting the exact features of a
cop.
Come on Kollywood actors!
Especially the ones who though
Cop role is something more
glamorous, more action oriented.
This is the first time a cop’s role
has been defined in a different
style. The struggles of a police
officer, his confusions and duty
consciousness and how he
surrenders to the situation has
been very well narrated. His
performance in climax is superb.
Producer A.L. Azhagappan is
good with his acting skills. You
cannot judge his character of
whether he is a good or evil
person. He sticks to the role of a
politician of how they deal with
the situations and try expanding
their business through marriage
proposals. The portrayal of Vijay
Malaya character as Shivaraj
Hegde is perfect. Sasi brings in
the sequence of the character at
gallery of IPL matches and
sipping the spirits all the time.
There is another special actor in
the movie, whom on revealing
will break the suspense. You’ll
have to catch up with the movie.
Newcomer Aparna is okay while
Abhinaya remains in your senses
as even when the show is over
while Vaibhav and others have
lived under the skin of
characterizations.
The biggest plus of the film is the
naturalistic portrayal of every
character. Sasikumar has well
depicted the conflicting natures
of characters in rich family and
middle classes.
The minus of the film is the
second half as the flashback
sequence has nothing to offer
for such a long duration.
Sasikumar could have handled it
in a sleek manner.
James
Vasanthan’s music is okay in
songs as except ‘Jilla Vittu’ none
of them sound greater. The
background score is okay and
the cinematography by Kathir is
the major asset.
The story of vengeance seeking
might be older, but Sasikumar
tries to thrust the fact that city
life spoils the good ones. Since it
nearly takes 90mins for the
actual story to start, the
audiences may become restless
while for those who are well
known to the Chennai lifestyle
and working system of police,
politicians and businessman, it
will be a docu-drama kind of
experience, which will be
appreciated.
If the film is promoted at right
momentum, it will surely yield
better results in box office.
Verdict: Sasikumar’s Horror
Chennai

At the script level , Eesan works wonderfully. You have the standard setup of murder in the beginning, establishing motives of individual characters , with sub plots , creating a focal mystery event and how these sub plots and its characters form with that event, a mandatory flashback and all blood in the end - all done beautifully - at script level. When you frame this in celluloid , the story has to be told by a combination of various things and chief being the actor's performance - This is where i felt the movie falters big time , the characters , starting with deiva nayagam( Chezian's father) are enacted so cardboard type that the relevance of this character to the event loses its steam .
There are however no pretense in the characterization or in the scenes , for example the romance between Chezian ( enacted neatly by vaibhav) and Reshma incubates ina rave party - there is no 'im -rich-and -yet-moral' types and sasikumar makes no bones about that . Neither is the entire title shot, of faithfully closing on 'sarakku' , with the ice cubes dropping by is any indication of the story - there is not even sub text of any kind of message . It is a straight thriller- the sub-plots are full of equations , linear, exponential with variables of power, money, revenge which should have ideally created more interest , but due to bad acting and even more bad background music, editing(second half) does nothing , but makes the viewer look for the non-existent fast forward button to sangiaah ( samuthirakani , played well) character , who investigates the mystery event , with intelligence , swift .
Sasikumar , the dialogue writer takes pot shots ( was it karthik chidambaram ?) at politicians , police , and the life at Fashion technology institute, sometimes on your face and sometimes subtly . There is a sense of realism that continues from subramanyapuram, aptly transferred to the city mileu. There is this character enacted by abhinaya from village , a character whose skin exposure is restricted to the face ,joins the fashion institute, and gradually transforms , is shaped by the environment. There is no 80s type alienation of that character , no rhetoric about culture , just a transformation leading to unfortunate events .
Neither the music nor the camera was able to move the story forward , although there were brilliance in the framing of certain scenes. This is in quite contrast with nandhala where the story itself was told by the framing, of course comparing oranges with apples isn't fare .
Truly , telling a story is art - there is no fixed rule . A movie like kadhal with all new faces worked brilliantly , as the story spends lot of time with characters and we get to their skin of the character and follow the plot. Such a thing doesn't work here , it required seasoned performers to create impact - so much so that a decent performance by Samuthirakani appears brilliant by mediocre performers of other actors .
Bottom line , the transformation from village to city works to some extent , although this is a bumpy ride .

Sumaar. The film meanders aimlessly till intermission. The story begins only after that and there's nothing new about it. Sasikumar had tried to show the dark side of Chennai (night life, reckless sons of VIPs), but it doesn't work more than surface level. I feel Subramaniyapuram was much better, though I didn't like that film.

Sasikumar's Spoof on Silambarasan?
Looks like Sasikumar and his entire team had to repeatedly visit the discotheques and pubs for gaining good idea for ‘Easan’. During a particular sequence, an actor like character (face not shown properly) appears with his heroine in discotheques. The voice is mimicked exactly as Silambarasan that goes more blatant amongst the audiences.
Sasikumar has related more life-real characters into his film that goes with Vijay Mallya as well. The sequence of IPL matches where beautiful girls surround him, sipping the drinks always, listing out his new branch of companies.
When Sasikumar was asked on these ideas, the filmmaker

I liked the movie.
First half was little vague and
Once the suspense element picks up the sotry grips and lost it once the when the flashback starts.
Flashback part was little dragging
'Kannil anbai' song was very nice. All other songs excpet jilla vittu were not used completely.
Good acting by all. Specially Eesan and Sangaiyaa.
Climax was good.
I notice one thing....
Same kind of fate was given to two characters in his movies by Sasi - Jai in Subramaniyapuram and Vaibhav here. And both of them are from VenkatPrabhu's gang !!!!

Mostly factual, though some successes as Shankar / Bagyaraj weren't mentioned. Sounds like an IR fan writing the article, as these two didn't have IR for their movies. (Bagyaraj worked with IR later, though).

My aspirations was to give one good movie in TFI. I never thought it would be SuPu. I don't care anymore. I am not bothered if my films have the substance or make it big at the BO. As long as I can, I will produce and direct, or even act. In fact, I don't want to make another movie as good as SuPu.

another movie as good as SuPu.

Saw it yesterday. Below Average.
The film needs so many scenes to establish the characters and meanders in all possible directions in the first one hour or so and none of these scenes is of any importance in the second half. I would have started the film with Vaibhav's murder. His louuu track and the louuer's daddy (Vijay Mallya!) Vs his daddy track etc. Absolutely unnecessary. The film would have been a lot better (only relatively) if it were only two hours long. One hour of wasted footage, most in the first half.
Actually, I liked the first half better since it was not boring and was intriguing at least. But the second half completely spoiled everything as in all the open threads / subplots in the first half were not connected at all. Poorly acted too. Deivam's assistant was good though.
There were flashes of brilliance in the writing: For example - The naming - Needhirajan, DheivamE (As observed by BRangan), and dheivam snobbishly dismissing a velayutham (kaiyezhuthu pOda sonnaa oru thuNaikkaal extra pOdra)
and Abhinaya's dad character was well written but I had no idea what was happening in the village thiruvizhaa. Unnecessary again, the flashback could have been crisper.
And Sasi the director shines in a few scenes too. For example, the scene in which Sangaiyaa makes Dheivam's assistant to puke, the camera getting obstructed by Sangaiyya's rolling chair. Neat.

apdiyaa? I completely lost interest at that point. Anyway that person did well and Sasi for a moment (in the first half) made me think he was behind all that, so that he can become #2 instead of Vaibhav.
Yaaru avar? Remember seeing him in another film

Avardhaan. Peru Namo Naarayanan. He is actually a Production Controller?!!! I really liked him in Easan. One of the few positives in the film.
Another tidbit, that boy who plays Easan is the son of actor Jayaprakash (Pasanga, Vamsam & NMA).

Finally watched. Quite unusual screenplay, but age old story of revenge.
and I hate all those cliches of the 80s.
interesting movie but a little gory.
