Kumudam Review

Vikatan Review

Kalavani Goes Topper Over Charts
When the most expected biggies disappoint us, we really keep ourselves away from the medium-and-low budget films. In all likelihood, the previous Friday’s release ‘Kalavani’ has made it through a similar way. The film opened up with lukewarm response with distributors not really jumping with joy over the collections during first weekend. But with film reviews and audiences’ feedback getting on more favorable, the crowds have gradually started thronging more for this film.
In most of the theatres, the film was screened for a single show and from Monday onwards, they have been increased due to more crowds. Previously, it had happened with Vikram Kumar’s ‘Yaavarum Nalam’, Sasikumar’s ‘Nadodigal’ and Shankar’s ‘Eeram’. These films never had such intense expectations and got through slow picks at box office.
Let’s hope the film makes through a commendable phase, thereby insisting producer Naseer to often make good quality films.

Watched the film today and fell in love with it. Easily one of the best films released this year. There is not a dull moment in the film and its a laugh riot starting from the opening credits to the closing. Thanks to the director for choosing a non-madurai location and that gives the movie a very fresh look...
Vimal, New comer Thirumurugan, heroine Oviya, Ilavarasu, Saranya, etc, etc have played their part to perfection. Ganja Karuppu is the second hero of the movie...
If you want an unadulterated, violence free, sentiment devoid laugh riot, try this one.. Tamizh cinema is enjoying a very good phase now...

Good to see a low-budget, less popular movie, more importantly a

Well done Sargunam!
I will watch it asap.

Watched on saturday.Definately a clean-slate,good entertainer.No Doubt.
What I thought was It lacked a racy Post-Interval.
May Be Since the hero is not an MASS-ACTION HERO. [ I think I'm corrupted by
watching more MASALA TAMIL FILMS ].
A Common Movie Audience like me would have loved to see something racy, gripping Chase sequence in the climax.Instead it was carried in a humorous manner on the shoulder of
GANJA KARUPPU....
The Love Sequences b/w the lead pair
ARIKKI - LC112
*The first scene when he drops his friend to give lift to the Hero-Ine where she asks for that boy.
*Hero giving special care to crop planted by her

Kalaavani: Movie Review
Debutant director Sargunam scores heavily in his very first attempt at making a full-length film as he has done away with the customary violence of a rural backdrop and has sincerely attempted to narrate the clash between two villages without any artificial insertions. The characters are very casual and the sequencing has been far from disappointing.
Arivazhagan (Vimal) is an irresponsible guy who thrives on the money sent by his father (Ilavarasu) settled in Dubai and doesn’t feel ashamed in threatening his mother (Saranya) and extracting money from her to meet his expenses besides indulging from time to time in petty mischief and major quarrels. When he teases Maheswari (Oviya) of the rival village, it ends up in him falling head over heels in love with her.
Maheswari’s brother is a goon who hates Arivu’s village and its residents and wants to make use of the ‘affair’ by taking Arivu’s life. Meanwhile, Ilavarasu returns to the village from Dubai and takes cognizance of his son’s love affair. He attempts to mend his son’s ways and assures him that he’d get him married to his sweetheart. How he does and so and whether the warring village made truce or not is what the rest of the story is all about.
Realism is the forte of ‘Kalavaani’: the characters, characterization and the very casual portrayal by the lead actors is what makes the film a compelling viewing. The script doesn’t attempt to belie logic and the dialogues are just appropriate and to the point, traits which are increasing becoming rare in Tamil films.
Vimal, who impressed one and all with his portrayal of ‘Meenatchi’ in Pandiraj’s ‘Pasanga’ last year, does a ‘Sathyaraj’ with a very realistic portrayal and delivering dialogues with sarcasm. Oviya looks very pretty and fits the bill as an innocent village belle. She could have helped her cause more had she concentrated on her facial expressions.
Saranya, over the years, has delivered some amazing performances. Her role as Jeeva’s mother in ‘Raam’ and Bharath’s mother in ‘Em Magan’ are stand-out performances. Here too, as Vimal’s mother who believes her son come what may, she dazzles and is easily the best performer in the film, beating the likes of Ilavarasu. Her ‘mock’ dramas staged to bail her son out of his problems are handled nicely by the director.
Ilavarasu, a veteran actor, appears to have been caught in a dilemma as to whether to portray his role in serious mode or a humourous mode. ‘Ganja’ Karuppu tickles the funny bones to a great extent in the company of Mayilsamy. The actor who plays Oviya’s brother has done a fairly decent job, especially in sequences where he needs to emote.
The film drags a little bit in the first half but the fast-paced of the second half makes the viewers forget it. The humour quotient, inherent and tangible throughout the film, makes the film an interesting fare, which culminates in an interesting climax. Fortunately, the film is sans cheap sentiment, gravity-defying fight sequences and double-meaning dialogues (by the director), for which Sargunam should be appreciated whole-heartedly.
Sargunam has also consciously ‘broken free’ from the stereo-typed portrayal of villages in Tamil films depicting its dirty houses and meaningless talks. The realistic portrayal of characters, sequences and the incidents occurring in the film deserve special appreciation. The underlying hunger in the director’s heart to make a meaningful film appears to have been full realized!
The couple of ‘chasing’ sequences in the film, which are ultra-serious, are photographed amazingly but at the same time the humour quotient in them is not lost either. For that mater, the script of the film is a very serious one but the director has succeeded in instilling in it moments of light-hearted laughter, which calls for some serious skills in film-making. If he grooms himself properly, Sargunam could even become another Bharathiraaja!
Dialogue is another department, besides screenplay and direction, where Sargunam scores heavily as they are sharp, to the point and subtle. Saranya’s dialogue, especially, are razor-sharp and lovable.
In debutant Kumaran’s music, none of the songs are hummable but he makes up for it in his background score. Kumaran has involved himself deep into the script and has given a grand BGM to supplement the mood of the film. Cinematography by Om Prakash in showing the fertile lands and other sequences besides the chasing sequences is simply superb.
Sargunam doesn’t need to worry: he has a sure-fire winner in ‘Kalavaani’. We should also not forget to offer bouquets to the director for his amazing effort!
Don’t miss it.

Producer invokes the wrath of Sun TV
Producer Naseer, who happens to the manager/PRO of actress Trisha, is the producer of the film ‘Kalavaani’, which released last week and has been getting rave reviews from the print and television media, with its director Sargunam coming in for wholesome praise from many quarters. Naseer recently sold the satellite broadcasting rights of the film to Vijay TV, which appears to have triggered more problems than he might have anticipated.
The satellite broadcasting rights of new films are usually competed among themselves mainly by Sun TV and Kalaignar TV. Even if both these channels miss out on getting the broadcasting rights of a particular film, they won’t shy away from relaying on their channel the advertisement, songs and clippings from the film in order to promote it, albeit after getting paid for the same.
In the case of ‘Kalavaani’, though, Sun TV has reportedly instructed its authorities that none of the sequence or songs from the film should be shown on its channel. The reason given by them is the ‘unreliable’ attitude of Naseer, who showed his film ‘exclusively’ and separately to the two ‘heirs’ of the State’s ‘big’ family who have been in to distribution and production even as Sun TV was negotiating with him about the cost of the rights.
Now, Naseer is said to be scratching his head as to how to pacify the leading channel in Tamil Nadu. He, however, has one consoling thing: ‘Kalavaani’ has been doing great and has been getting good reviews from everyone!

Quite a good film. Takes a while to establish the conflict and this tests our patience. Lot of good scenes dispersed through the film, which makes the film more than watchable. If only the duration is less than 2 hours, the film could have been much better.

saw few scenes on TV :-
one scene where hero keeps the leaf like bud under the hand sleeve of chudi and squeezes heroines hand, and that action makes the bud to move under the sleeve.... this scene reminded my childhood days...yeah....we(kids) used to play with such buds
one more scene where heroine and kids will be playing to explode the flower buds by pressing them.... small kid will say like"
enakku mattum chinna poovaa kuduththu nee kallaatta aadra " ....so cute
these scenes kindled my childhood memories
namma set pasanga dhaan ippa tamil cinema'va kuththagaikku eduththirukkaanga

Watched it!
A clean entertainer! Congrats to the Director for making such a light entertainer. Comedy scenes were not rib tickling, yet worked effectively. First half made me laugh while second half made me ROTFL.
Two characters that impressed me:
1. Saranya - She is indispensable when it comes to Mother roles. It's highly impossible to imagine some other woman in her role. She does it with 200% perfection. She is so cute every time she says "aani pOi, aadi pOi, aavani vandha, avan top-la varuvan nu pattukottai josyar sonnaru"
Tamil Cinema-ku kedaichurukkura oru nalla amma-na adhu saranya amma thaan.
2. Secondly, brother of LC112. He has done a fabulous job with a unique body language, dialogue delivery. More importantly, very less of high decibel shouting which is what most brother characters are known for!
ivanga rendu pErukku appuram thaan hero and heroine. Vimal, though has pulled it off decently, reminded me of ParuthiVeeran in may dialogues. Here, I should mention that Ameer can put his collars up for creating such a master piece and an unforgettable character which is influencing so many upcoming movies and heroes.
Hero's friends have done their parts well. Arivazhagan! Mr. Arivazhagan
Verdict: Don't miss it

I was very much disappointed with the first 15 minutes. That is when Mr. Panchayathu entered and that "deeiii.... panchayathu paaltaail kudichuttaaram daaa..............." scene came.
Those friends enacted is so beautifully.
One big plus point of this movie is, I could not spot even a single character irritating. Everybody did well.
Another point to note is, it is not usual to see a village story (that too, two rathaboomi because of quarrel) revolving around less no of characters.
But Madurai slang thaan jaasthi pesuna madiri irundhadhu.

Lovely little film. Film of the year for me. The director gets full marks w.r.to setting up the milieu (including the record dance), characterizations (even the smallest of characters like the dubai friend), acting (the leading lady could have done a little better) and the dialogues.
Vimal was excellent. Lead performance of the year so far. I was impressed with him in Pasanga and he was far more impressive in this role. apdiyE natural-aa varudhu acting. His kooththu pattarai experience coming to the fore. Ilavarasu was superb. I always thought he is an under-utilized supporting actor.
The director's attention to detail was amazing. Watch out for the scene in the bar (before their attempt to kidnap the teacher) in which even the characters in the background have something to do. And also the 'meeting' scene after his dad's Dubai return in which Vimal wears new set of clothes, without the director spelling it out. Also executing long drawn scenes (there are so many of them) with impeccable detailing is not easy.
Could have done away with way too many romance scenes in the exact same location. And in 2-3 scenes Vimal reminded me of Paruthi veeran Karthi. But I am only nitpicking. Sarkunam saar

I was talking about this with PR last week. I felt like I traveled from my hometown to Thanjavur (only the duration was little longer). Sarkunam had incorporated lot of things that are peculiar to Pattukottai-Thanjavur surroundings. (Eg. Flex banner and one of his friend's pic in that, polydol etc). None of them seemed thrust into the film.

Picturization of that Dumma dumma song is good
even tho it's quite regular in village stories.
I have a point to share. Making a village story with less no characters is something unusual. Sargunam has done it here. Hardly five-six main characters!

I have a point to share.
Making a village story with less no characters is something unusual. Sargunam has done it here. Hardly five-six main characters!
I was telling the same to my frnd yesterday !!!

What a lovely little film this is. It's a breezy unperturbed watch. There are minor (hardly ever) irritations for a film that treads through clichéd plot points. That tells you how refined the handling is, and it's not that I laughed out loud ( I did once towards the end with Ganja karuppu, who for the first time seems impressive), The blithe tone of the narrative is rather welcome and refreshing for TFI (with all the overaching seriousness that some of the 'new-wave' guys seem to take themselves, esp. the Ameer-Sasikumar hood), how uninhibitedly it pans out for a debut filmmaker. It's always great to see uniformly good acting. Except perhaps the actor who does the typically bad machan role, hardly ever believable, let alone suggest menace, but that seems to be the sentiment of the filmmaker about rural cliques who indulge in machismo. Although there are couple of domestic instances where women get beat up. And mild sexist discharge that persists in rural context. But we'll grant allowances in this regard, as it doesn't make the women unworthy, or approach them in a misogynistic manner. But to cut it some well-earned slack, there are no faux pretensions to make a broad commentary of any sort (that some of our filmmakers indulge in, and fail, miserably).
It's always nice to see characters who don't exudate fake persona. And it's quite a while since likes of Pandiarajan and Bhagyaraj, that a fletched-out milieu is brought out without being quaint. Some of the romantic detours and calculative freewheeling of the youth might seem nostalgic, but the way it's fleshed out scurries over, never seems dated. The relationships and familial archetypes (be it Arriki's or Maheshwari's) are all naturalistic and operate in different strokes, and seem to be less arbitrary in nature, yet, never mechanical and rigidly motivated that would render 'em less dimensional. The cinematography and background score is functional. As for songs, they seem shortened in the theater I watched (rather welcome to this particular viewer), or perhaps that's how it originally is. There isn't quite a lot to be said about this film, but that it deserves to be seen. Do yourself a favor - go watch it. Do the filmmakers a bigger favor, by watching it on big screen.

I am sorry but I thought the flex banners (incl thangaL nalvaravai virumbum + pics of the bannerers) are common throughout TN. And on the milieu thing again, I have been to most of the thanjai area during my four years of undergrad and it was refreshing to see a non-madurai rural area being portrayed realistically.

1. Vimal growing paddy
2. Climax
3. Mages lifting followed by cycle lifting. Very very poetic.
4. The long kidnap scene
5. Thiruvizha + fight(!)
6. Ilavarasu entry followed by Saranya's drama
7. Basically all *Mahendran/BM esque* long scenes

Gautaman Bhaskaran's Review: Kalavani
Hindustan Times
Director: A. Surkunam
Actors: Oviya, Ilavarasu, Saranya and ‘Ganja’ Karuppu
Rating: *** Often the most unsung film turns out to be the least disappointing. Coming in the wake of a critical and
box-office disaster like Raavanan, debutant director Surkunam’s Kalavani in Tamil is a hugely pleasing work set in the Tamil Nadu countryside. Tamil cinema, which is just about the only one that still dares to get out of urban situations and away from slick city-bred characters, presents in Kalavani a canvas of delightful rural romance.
However, the story of two neighbouring villages in feud is a subject beaten to pulp on the Tamil screen, and Surkunam’s plot offers nothing dramatically different here. Yes, the screenplay is smooth, the performances are natural and most characters are well etched out. Dialogues are not exactly laboured, and the humour is not as silly as it is in most other Tamil movies.
Narrating a blissfully innocent romance between Arikki (Vimal of Pasanga fame) and newcomer Oviya essaying high-school student Maheshwari, the film embellishes it with various facets of the enmity between the two communities that extend even to children’s cricket matches. This rift of course does not stop Cupid from striking Arikki, a habitual flirt who eventually falls for Maheshwari from the enemy zone. Arikki’s wastrel tendencies that his mother (Saranya, still the great actress we saw years ago in Nayagan) overlooks and even encourages with the money her Dubai-based husband sends. Arikki’s pranks that include bribing his way through junior college, cheating people of their money and even stealing a bag of cement have been portrayed with a sense of refreshing sincerity. There are no false notes here, and Maheshwari’s initial misgivings about Arikki transform into romantic love when she sees his other side laced as it with warmth and care.
Look at the way he lifts her and her bicycle on to a moving bus when he sees her brother and his friends out to get her. This is one of the movie’s most touching scenes captured entirely through gestures and looks. Maheshwari’s anger at being bundled into the bus evaporates when she sees her brother and his gang zip past in motorcycles. And Oviya’s marvellous expressions convey her gratitude, and she uses her eyes to say it all.
Vimal as the rustic Romeo packs his part with disarming naturalness. His sense of mischief and waywardness later blend into his deep affection for the schoolgirl from the next village. Meeting on a long winding road that divides the two warring communities and runs through lush paddy fields, Vimal and Oviya portray a virtue hardly seen in Indian cinema, which often banks on the heroic and the beautiful to narrate stories. Rarely are there people who seem so real.

1., 4. 6. were all kinda like old-school too..
Liked the shortened scheme of 5. It's how the filmmaker scurries away, without making it a long drawn dishoom-dishoom and messing up the narrative.
About 7. That's exact inversion of 5 right. The economy of the expression in 5 is a welcome move and done with 'taste', without disturbing the tone of the film and the character's freewheeling attitude to life. While 7 is elaboration to enhance the milieu, but also to keep the narrative moving. 1. is similar too. How things pan out don't seem out of place, including the comedy sequences. As Arriki's mother asks the kids to move in, and play, the younger one steps out to talk to his brother about getting pair of cows to plough the field. He milks out money but maneuvers a con to do it for minimal cost. His sister knows her brother in and out, makes out his move, and in turn requests for pencils for the amount (200 Rs) rationed to him. And she does get it, but as a bribe to write Mages's record of course.
But the film never thrusts towards its plot with a fascistic pride. The film opens with a seemingly non sequitur situation where we get to see a cricket tournament between different districts. Their rivalry is fleshed out in an unassuming way and subsequently the main characters (who are all mired to this rivalry) are all shown. It's not that even kids share the intense hatred (Arsanur's Mcgrath does his bit of sledging :P ), also to wit, a 'kid's business' (the film is book-ended with birth of Arriki-Mages's child bringing about the unification, of not just the young men, but families, old heads and the towns) is in turn, alluding to death of gloried aruvaal culture. The old patriarchal figures are kept in periphery. It's canny sense of irony that Kanja karuppu's character is named 'Panchayathu', and how such old house institutions have become a living parody. And the ending credits, how the family grows old, and new furniture 'urbanizes' the countryside. And at end of it all, this countryside family's newfound heritage is now to venture abroad for employment.

One of the best films of the decade. Good that there were no gory scenes typical of any (recent) village based subject.
A well made 'serious' movie with a 'humorous' base.
Vimal's lip-sync were not upto the mark in many places. Did anyone notice it?

The comparison is because movies like angAdi, VKK and this do a great job w.r.t puviyiyal
Obviously, the content makes the great difference between the other two and this.
angAdi - serious matter, mostly handled seriously with enough light moments to make the watch without aluppu
VKK - both serious and non-serious material handled with a lot of great moments to make it entertaining
kaLavANi - totally non-serious material handled with enough humor to make it entertaining but the serious lack of content (luvvu, murrattu aNNan, saNdai between village groups etc - as old as TF) make the 'puviyiyal' just a matter of curiosity and cannot get entry into movies of repute in my book - like a "EmAththu Srinivasan malayALam movie without Lal"

Any creation that takes efforts to be honest to its art form and takes effort in detailing makes a impressive piece of construction. Kalavani is not flashy audacious screenwriting or any great shakes like Inception but a film that sticks to basics of writing which is such a welcome change amidst lazily written tamil movies, which get lazy appreciations. The thing that stuck me most in the movie was its attention to details and the way all the details are connected in a novel way. Director had all the details in the table and didnt miss any of them, which makes it a great execution. The comedy in the movie just happened and was not a effort. Coming to the characterisations, Vimalraj's i.e kalavani's was the best - the director in a couple of sequences established the "Rancho of arasanur" which Hirani tried to hammer in 3 hrs in 3 idiots. Without formal education, he is a task master who gets work done and makes the ends meet, very well. Another aspect that stuck me was the reason for love developing between protaganists was heartening, it wasnt the lazy "chilhood love" - the way kalavani impresses the girl with his hot-cold good-bad behavior was truly amazing. The final sequences where she filp-flops due to womanly-rumors and then cornered to eloping due to lack of care from parents/siblings. All these elements did not stuck like sore thumbs here and there for sake of it, instead it was woven beautifully into a dynamic screenplay, which ultimately looked like a conglomeration. As is the bane with all recent movies - milieu definitions were not given so much importance, instead it was stitched seamlessly into the screenplay making interesting watch instead of boring "must-do" in a film.
The climax was fun, "kaminey" style with lot of chaos and all characters gaining momentum. I'm personally fan of such big-bang climaxes. The dialogues were crisp and as again, didnt try too much like Paruthiveeran or subbipuram, and stuck to its task. The movie also had a intelligent brush of social commentary with govt. giving cycles to girls, a solid reason for tensions between villages, the ecnonmic status of the people etc. The movie towers over its contemporaries in its detailing only - for ex: paruthiveeran who lives a merry life, but Ameer never explains how pv makes money but here kalavani and his modus operandi is clearly defined. The movie doesent resort to "shock-and-awe" climaxes of so called acclaimed movies - its neat tying of knots in the end was characteristic of a great making. The director was honest to the script and it wasnt just a assortment of good ideas but a perfect framework which was made of a convincing line of events.
Now thats called a "Dream movie"

I have not seen Nandalaala yet, with the list of the other movies mentioned, I have doubts to call this year as "2010 வருடம் ஒரு பொன்னான ஆண்டு"

I am not coming to say any of these movies are "Bad". Does not qualify enough for "ஒரு பொன்னான ஆண்டு"

There use to be a poll in the Hub every decade for deciding "Director of the Decade", Movie of the Decade etc., Probably you may add "Golden year of the decade in TFI" something like that.

well.. I would NOT only thank the producer but also appreciate at least for nandalala.. it was a movie where you don't find any commercial aspect. It is just that they wanted to invest for a good movie though it is a low budget.

The producers he was mentioning are the KKKK.
I dont want to eloborate KKKK. With little GK it could be found out.
