Poll explanations.
1.Story screen play:
In this poll i gave prior importance to Story and screen play because in those poll category its the powerful one.A storng storyline and good screen play can take a cinema to world stands.
2.Technical aspects:
In Technical aspect we are going well. The latest technic we are approaching is animatronics and the 3D cinema is not far from us...
3.Trading:
In trading we are little lagging then that of hindi movies.tamil films are releasing mostly all over india, malaysia & singapore,US,UK and very few european countries.Yet we are partialy global releasing.
friends pls share your thoughts.. and poll after reading this.

Vijay’s characterization for every movie, is correlated to real life. He tries to live the common man’s character in his movies, thanks to the image he has received.
For example, He is the friendly auto-rickshaw driver in ‘Vettaikkaran’ and a fisher man in ‘Sura’. He has also played the classy roles of business man, a cop and a lawyer, etc. Just gets to show you, his variety.
btw naanum vijay a nakkal panna poadala :P For the title those lines makes perfect sense

Yeah, get that straightened out first and then we decide what's world class and not. As per my observations, World Class = enakku pidichathu. Local class = enakku pidikkathathu. :P

Brahmas of Tamil cinema.....
Following director are those brahmas who create various kind of scripts and stories.I ordered them 1 to 20 and they.....
1. Mani Ratnam
There is no need to elaborate much on the popularity that Mani Ratnam and his films. he is a brand of cinema on his own. Looking at all the films that he has done till date and the kind of multi-starrer that he is set to offer us (Raavan) and the special music that he continues to elicit out of Rahman every time, there is little doubt as to whether he belongs at the top order of film makers in Tamil cinema, perhaps Indian cinema.
Yes he is the top most director in Tamil cinema also INDIAN CINEMA.His movies are mostly portrays a single mans contribution or struggle towards society and politics...... Man of simplicity and perfection...
2. Shankar
The king of grandeur, there is no better way to describe this man. He does not seem to know the meaning of the word ‘small’, each film of his just keeps getting bigger in terms of scale, budget and sheer viewing experience on screen. He is a director who keeps stretching the horizons of Tamil cinema in terms of scale and technical enhancements. With Endhiran, the most expensive Indian movie ever, just round the corner, he shows no signs of slowing down.
He is like a spielberg of tamil cinema who's going to bring unusal and sci fi movie enthiran. The ANIMATRONICS TECHNOLOGHY will have its first footage in india through this film.... And also he is the one who introduced TIME SLICE MOTION PICTURING in indian cinema.....
3. Bala
Exploring uncharted territory, challenging the very fundamental beliefs of conventional and commercial Tamil cinema, never compromising on the impact that he wants to create on screen, Bala is the kind of director who keeps infusing new thematic possibilities into an industry that has to find appealing ideas for existence. With his intentions of a breezy entertainer already announced, it is time for us to find out a new facet of this filmmaker
The mindblowing thinker... No one can plot a storyline as he thinks.. The abnormal charecters which appears in his film are those who are normally appears before everyone eyes in day to day life... The graph of every hero after in his directorial shows drastic changes...
4. Gautham Vasudev Menon
He is a director who seems to have immense belief in his kind of film making, the cool and urban kind. He has had his detractors who have made no effort to hide their disgust of the amount of English used in his films, but Gautham Menon remains unshaken and gives out neat entertainers liked by the youth and the urban audience. He delivers entertainment, excitement and the best part is that he never tries to do it at the expense of a sensible script or logic, which makes him special. Also, one of the select few directors who seem to be able to bring out the best music from a composer.
He is man of classy... in his film making though it doesnt suits every audience watching the movie he is one of the best.Though he is cuntered by having lot of english dialogues and inspiration like bone collector and forest gump.. his style and making speaks more...
5. A.R.Murugadoss
It has to be that it has been nearly 5 years since he delivered a movie in Tamil. Yes, he has been busy in Telugu and Hindi. But, after a path breaking entertainer like Ghajini, everyone wanted to see more from this director. In all the films he has made, he has shown a knack of maintaining a pace that never lets you off the hook, of crating characters that the audiences are able to connect and sympathize with – the signs of a skilled film maker. And, at last we have news of a proposed project in Tamil with Suriya.
No one can find a single fault in his movie. His script and screen play are very well packed and portrayed in very neat manner...
This order is according to me and interest may vary..... I have more things to say so friends try to avoid critisicing....

THITTAKUDI MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods review board
Starring: Ravi & Asvatha
Direction: Suntharan
Music: Selva Nambi
Production: Dr.R.Siva Kogul Raj
At one side, we have movies that take Tamil cinema to the next league with world class potential and at the other, there are such movies that even describing them would make one cringe. Director Suntharan’s Thittakudi is one of those B graders simply made to add credit points to the director’s profile and to make the producer Siva Kogul Raj’s finances dwindle.

Subramaniapuram
Another excellent movie with good story & screnplay.kathir's cinematography was superb & especially climax scene tht is kanjakaruppu walking towards a road.It took half a day to make camera arrangements....
And onemore thing after Paruthiveeran and Subramaniapuram many more films r coming out shooted in & around MADURAI irritating trend...

but, Gowtham's film titles are much better than the present day films..
mostly, they either keep - a old title (or) name of a place... they started with bigger towns & now they are moving to small village names, so that they could have more options
very few titles makes u interested..
Even before tax exemption for tamil titles, he kept good tamil title... though he uses lot of english in his dialogues...

....Brahmas continues
6. Ameer
He does not dilute his films to make them cute or likeable, he believes in showing brazen reality, the sun that beats down harshly on earth, words spewed in anger and what happens when push comes to shove. His films hit you with their ‘in your face’ kind of presentation. But, at the end of it all, you don’t feel repulsed, instead you feel drawn towards the narration and the characters. Ameer is a powerful film maker.
Ameera's all the three films are diffenrent to each in their plot. The last film of his directorial PARUTHIVEERAN was a blog buster. The star cast in this film was excellent and many of those came out with best of their acting... Aadhi baghvan is his next and it will b with commercial stamp.
7. Selvaraghavan
If there is anyone in the Tamil film industry whom you can call a trailblazer, then it has to be this man, especially after Aayirathil Oruvan where he introduced a never before seen genre into Tamil cinema. An asset to the industry for sure
Kadhal kondein,7/G,Pudhupettai,Aayirathil oruvan... selva's milestones are more and lot more to come.Vikram project and another bilingual project with telgu hero Rana...
8. Sasikumar
He might have delivered just one film, but that one seemed to convey the amount of talent and promise that this man possesses. Subramaniapuram, the small budget tale of the youth of Madurai in the 1980s, was as much a wonder as a revelation to Tamil cinema, an effort that sparked off new belief and new beginnings in the industry. We definitely need more men like Sasikumar and more films from the man himself to rid the industry of redundancy and jaded predictability.
The team he has was powerful. The effort they are puting on their projects are huge. His role in cinema as Director,Producer,Actor..... all r liked by people.
09. Mysskin
In just a couple of films, he has become synonymous with a tight screenplay, strong characters and good audience response that come along with that. He has also shown the ability to bring out the best from performers, casting in a non-conventional manner. Nandhalala, which is also his acting debut, will be keenly watched when it releases
Raja is his original name he changed his name since many have same name. And Mysskin is a russian author he(Director) inspired in his books and changed his name.
10. S.P.Jananathan
A director who has tread away from all the conventions from Tamil cinema, S.P. Jananathan is a man who has the gumption to stand apart from the crowd and get noticed. Each of his three films has stood apart from the regular Tamil cinema and the best part is that all three films are also very different from each other. He is not the kind to specialize in one kind of theme or concept. He has shown the adaptability to different requirements.
Director S P Jananathan proved his mettle as a filmmaker who can do different movies within commercial parameters with Peranmai,Iyarkai and E.

Varun, still I am not able to get the information for my question - What is World Class? Also, I understand that we all expect and look for improvements in various departments in Films. But, I don't get this world class thing. People have been mentioning the movies they like. But, we can categorize something only when we define the category. Till then, this thread will be used to make fun of other's choices and create unnecessary arguments.

World Class Movie
A movie which make great impact on audience around the world and they dont have language barrier is world class movie.
And i mentioned many films they r few examples. Many of you came across some movies ella... Mention those movies which made an impact on you...
Upcoming movies r using many new technologies in cinemotography, editing, CG etc... we can also discuss about that..
Usaully a film is canned in a single type of camera Dasavatharam was expection they used nearly 4 type of cameras Mega mount,Super 35mm.
using super 35mm camera we can take a close shot by keeping camera very near to an object nearly 5 to 6 mm of gap. PUDHUPETTAI n VETTAIYADU VELIYADU r other films used this camera.

"You ain't heard nothing yet"
The base frequency is what makes the difference between mono and Dolby and DTS. In the DTS sound system, three CDs are recorded with the audio and are made to run with the film. The projector will read the code in the CD and the system will start working.
The first film to have used the Dolby system was Kamal Hassan's 'Kurudhipunal'. Similarly the first Indian film to have adopted DTS system was Abavanan's 'Karuppu Roja'. These are just two examples to show the advancements and accomplishments of Tamil films in Indian cinema.
After DTS, SBBS is a high tech advancement which within a few years of being introduced in Hollywood, will find its way into Tamil cinema too. I have seen Central theatre in Covai used this SBBS soundings.
In the invention of L D Forrest, Movietone helped record the sound on the edge of the film. In the recently introduced Super 35 mm technology, sound will be recorded on the image itself.
This way, not only the image will have super clarity, but the sound too would be crystal clear. Selvaraghavan's 'Pudupettai' and Kamal's 'Vettaiyadu Vilayadu' will be adopting this Super 35mm technology.
A R Rahman does the recording in his own studio for his Hollywood film assignments. There are quite a few such studios in Tamilnadu. The answer to a question if the Tamil cinema stories are anyway comparable to the international films will be forthcoming very hesitantly. But in sound technology, Tamil films are matching the global trend.
The filmdom that gave five Chief Ministers, more than 5500 films and countless actorsIn its achievement of 75 years, we can certainly add 'voice' to it.

Half yearly Report Card
Six months have passed this year and Kollywood is ready for the half yearly evaluation. A lot of water has flown down the Kollywood River. Expectations going sour, doubtful starters winning the race it all happened in the past six months.
January started with much expectation as one of the much expected and much delayed film ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ releasing on Pongal day. The very first day of the year had three releases but they weren’t the harbingers of hope. Pugaipadam, Nil Kavani Ennai Kadhali and Thinichal opened on the first day of the year with much publicity but the advertisements weren’t enough to life up the film.
All eyes were on Pongal day which saw only four releases. Brothers were pitted against each other with ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ and ‘Kutty’. But both the brothers lost the race. In fact there was no winner at all. Expectations turned out to be a burden and Selvaraghavan was named confusing director for his ‘AO’. The fate of the film even denied credits for the superlative performances of Remma Sen and Parthiban. ‘Kutty’ was fresh but it wasn’t a Dhanush film and failed for having spiced up with too much Telugu flavor in the Tamil version. The other two Pongal films ‘Naanayam’ and ‘Porkkalam’ were different but didn’t have the star value to make it. ‘Naanayam’ was sweet, suave and savvy but still failed.
The other big day in January was not the Republic Day but January 29. Goa, Thamizh Padam, Jaggubai, Kathai and Dhairiyam. ‘Goa’ was a mixed wine and the debate is still on. But the dark horse ‘Thamizh Padam’ was a hit and a massive hit. It deserved the success for introducing the genre spoof in a gravely polarized Tamil market. Kudos to the producer and director. ‘Jaggubai’ was in news more for it’s release on the internet even while it was in the labs. The proven successful duo of Sarath Kumar and K S Ravikumar sadly couldn’t make it this time.
February had only four releases in the whole month and the month belonged to Gautham Menon’s ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvayaa’. The silky soft romance blew away all competitors including Vishal’s ‘Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai’ and Sreekanth’s ‘Rasikkum Seemane’ that were released in February.
March saw the pouring of all that were delayed or postponed for ostensible reasons. Every body wanted to catch in the summer holidays. The twelve releases of the month were assorted. From stars to starlets to new faces the month had variety. From outright commercials like Jeeva’s ‘Kacheri Aarambam’ and Bharath’s ‘Thambikku Intha Ooru’ to offbeat ‘Aval Peyar Thamizharasi’ and ‘Karunai’ to fresh ‘Mundhinam Parthene’ and ‘Yadhumagi’, the month of March had a variety. But… but ‘Angadi Theru’ releasing at the end took all the cake and is still going strong. The Vasanthabalan film managed the rare act of striking a chord with both the masses and critics. Called a human film ‘Angadi Theru’ will cross 100 days in a couple of day.
April was a kind of significant month of the first half of this year. It started with Lingusamy’s ‘Paiyaa’ and ended with Vijay’s ‘Sura’. Both became diagonally opposite at the box office. ‘Paiyaa’ reiterated the stardom of Karthi and ‘Sura’ questioned the box office power of Vijay. All the films in between these two in April were sandwiched including the legendary star cast ‘Rettaisuzhi’. Some blamed it on the IPL Cricket matches between March 12 and April 25 for the poor show of films.
All those who feared the killer bite of ‘Sura’ bravely showed up in May. Thirteen films were released in May and Suriya’s ‘Singam’ ruled the roost. The other one to make a decent outing was ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’. The message here is even the summer holidays weren’t attractive to film makers which is a dangerous signal to the Tamil film industry.
The last month of the first half June also wasn’t a great shake. Other than the most anticipated film of the year ‘Raavanan’ the month had ten other releases. ‘Raavanan’ took a massive opening thanks to the hype and expectations created around it. The high run continued and ‘Ravaanan’ remained on top with the help of unexpected holidays for the Tamil conference.
Of the 58 films released only five were unanimous super hits. That is not even ten percent success. And all the five winners were very different from each other. ‘Thamizh Padam’ is a spoof. ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ is a romance. ‘Angadi Theru’ is a reality. ‘Paiyaa’ is a road. And ‘Singam’ is a spicy hot masala. So you can’t even say people like only a particular kind of film. Much expected films backed by big names like ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ and ‘Raavanan’ did not elicit the desired response.
On the whole the first half yearly report card of Kollywood has very little to cheer but a lot of introspect. Wishing a happy second half!

The Thing is No. releases that is Centers should be increased.
Then there will be many big budgets and experimental films like periodical films will release more.
Now in tamil cinema only Two biggies.. Super star & ulaga nayagan have that capability.
I expect Marudhanayagam & Marmayogi but its getting late those are absolute experimental films and Now super star gave way for Largest budget in indian cinema forever... They are surely going to take our cinemas to international standards.
I'm feel proud for having those two.....

Peers praise Mani
Office bearers of Tamil Film Directors Association, including veterans like Balumahendra and K Bhagyaraj, called on Mani Ratnam at his office in Chennai on Friday and congratulated the ace director for the honour bestowed on him at the Venice Film Festival.
Those who were present include Vasanth, R K Selvamani, Santhanabarathy, Lingusamy, Ezhil, Balaji Sakthivel, S P Jananathan, Rajakumaran and Vikraman among others. They presented a bouquet to Mani and exchanged pleasantries with him.
On Monday, hailing Mani Ratnam as ‘one of the great innovators in contemporary Indian cinema’, the Venice International Film Festival honoured him with the 2010 Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award.
With the award Mani Ratnam joined Sylvester Stallone, Agnes Varda, Abbas Kiarostami, and Takeshi Kitano who have ‘left a mark’ on contemporary cinema. After the award ceremony, the festival premiere of ‘Raavanan’ was screened.
Mani was accompanied by wife Suhasini, and Vikram. ‘Mani Ratnam used to make movies only in his native tongue, Tamil, but has been one of a handful of filmmakers to successfully handle the transition to the All-India market,’ said the Venice Film Festival director Marco Mueller explaining the choice in a news release

'Tamil cinema towards world class!', if this is a comparison, then I would say its no match.. Yes, we see growth in many aspects, for ex Super Star and Shankar making one of the most expensive movies in Asian cinema with most technological advancements.. But even in this we goto Hollywood studios to make it.. Of course thr r many better movies that hardly comes to light world wide.. It is only when Danny Boyle directed an Indian movie, it goes to Oscars.. What if an Indian director did the same, I bet, that would hav not even got awards even in India.. Hope all this ends and we see ourselves in a great position

Now only they have set their sight towards tamil cinema... Bolly is much better to tamil cinema in many ways...
- Promotion
- Scripts
- Multi-starrers
- Exotic locations etc...
Above all Hindi is the main medium... And so the reachout will be more than tamil cinema's.... Tamil cinema also has it's striking features... But many feel this is the beginning of a new age in Tamil Cinema... You can see certain biggies like Big Pictures of Reliance telecom releasing certain tamil films to a never before seen level.. Ex. Singam - Tamil film to release in most number of screens in US so far.... It's mainly because of Big Pictures... We have a long way to go...

Even if you take scripts ok... But Promotion is very less here... Only trailers and rarely few on spot shooting pics that too taken by fans or occasionally by the mediawalas... There they give lot of interviews and hints about storylines prior to release... Release promo dialogues and songs too... All those are lacking here...

You say "
most expensive" as if it is a good thing. Rather, if it is true, what it probably has shown is the amount of excess and overhead that went into its production. The Enthiran graphics are good for Indian standard but definitely not better than what other "Asian" films (Japan) have done years ago. If Enthiran is the most expensive Asian film, then it is due to things like actor salaries or inefficiency, and not technological advancement. It is not something to brag about.
Tamil films aren't going to become world-class by trying to imitate Western productions and their stories (like many recent "love films"). It's pointless to try and beat someone at their own game. For example, Japan reached the world stage of films instead by presenting unique movies saturated with their own unique culture and life, and this is what brought them recognition. Too bad we seem to be moving away from this path...
By the way, if we're talking about technology, the next step for Tamil cinema is synchronous sound and getting rid of dubbing, increasing realism and the integrity of acting. But I guess this is not realistic at current times since half of our "puppet actresses" would be out of work without a dubbing artist to do half of their acting.

This post applies only for good Tamil movies... If you look at it, a good Tamil movie can be remade in other languages, and it usually brings them all good success. It could be Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, etc. Sometimes, when I see the reaction of my caucasian friends over some Tamil movies, I'm sure some good Tamil movies can be remade into English as well, mainly for the plot and screenplay.
Hence my vote is for #1 in the poll! We do have great stories and screenplays. If only we had the kind of market that Hollywood, or even Bollywood has for that matter, our revenue would be so high, that we can afford more for technical aspects. Trade is also reliant on the market!

You say "
most expensive" as if it is a good thing. Rather, if it is true, what it probably has shown is the amount of excess and overhead that went into its production. From Kollywood, Mysskin is now getting ready to hop to Bollywood. From there, the director would go to Hollywood, where he would make a film based on a story that revolves around the tooth of Lord Buddha, the same knot he planned for a movie with Kamal, which was dropped later.
And confirming this is none other than Mysskin himself. “One of my friends has been making arrangements for my maiden Hollywood venture. If everything goes well, the project would go on floors soon”.
Stating that he had completed ‘Yudham Sei’, his directorial venture starring Cheran in the lead, Mysskin claims it has come out well. “It is a thriller and would give a feel of reading a racy crime novel”, he says.
On ‘Nandhalala’, in which he had acted in the lead role besides directing it, the filmmaker says, “It’s up to the producers to decide on the movie’s release. I am eagerly expecting for that with my fingers crossed”.

LIGHTS ON CAMERAMEN
PC Sreeram
The Godfather of the world of cinematography, PC Sreeram, fondly called as PC, is a scientist when it comes to this art. Experimenting all the time with different lightings and angles, PC wowed the audience and made them aware that cinematography goes hand in hand with the director's vision. PC is a National Award winner for his effort in bringing life to the slums of Mumbai in Naayagan. He has also worked in movies in Hindi like Cheeni Kum and Paa. Kuruthipunal, his directorial, was India's official entry to the Oscars in 1995. PC has mentored many current star lensmen like Late Jeeva, KV Anand, Tirru, MS Prabhu and Ramji.
Santosh Sivan
The cinematographer with the most National awards (5), Mani Ratnam's favorite cinematographer, acclaimed across the globe! Santosh Sivan is a dream for any budding cinematographer. He has done movies in many languages and has also done a lot of documentaries. His work in Tamil movies like Roja, Iruvar, Dil Se and Raavan has been well appreciated. Santosh has also directed world class movies like ‘Before the rains’ and Tahaan. He is currently directing a tri-lingual starring Prithviraj and Genelia titled 'Urumi'.
Ravi K. Chandran
Ravi K. Chandran did a lot of Malayalam movies before his introduction to Tamil Cinema in Honest Raj. He first shot to limelight when he won the Filmfare award for his fantastic work in the Hindi Movie Virasat. He has never looked back since and has been in demand in Hindi as well as Tamil. His visual treats in Minsara Kanavu, Kandukondain Kandukondain, Kannathil Muthamitaal and Boys have earned him awards and recognition. He has also done a lot of Hindi movies which include Dil Chahta Hai, Black, Paheli, Ghajini and also the upcoming movie Guzaarish. He is also the cinematographer for Suriya starrer 7aam Arivu.
Rajiv Menon
Who said that the men behind the lens are not good looking? Look at Rajiv Menon and you can say he is charming as a hero. The most versatile among today's cinematographers, Rajiv Menon has done loads of documentaries and advertisements in addition to directing movies. Mani Ratnam offered him Aravind Swamy's role in Roja which he refused. He then shot to National fame for his work in Mani Ratnam's Bombay and the more recent Guru. Minsara Kanavu and Kandukondain Kandukondain, in his direction, have not only been popular hits but have also earned National awards to AR Rahman, Chitra, Prabhu Deva and Shankar Mahadevan.
KV Anand
After assisting PC for movies like Gopura Vaasalile, Meera, Devar Magan and Thiruda Thiruda, KV Anand got his break when PC introduced him to director Priyadarshan. KV’s first movie as a cinematographer Thenmavin Kombathu fetched him a National Award for best cinematography. There has been no stopping KV after that. He has done a variety of movies in Hindi and Malayalam apart from Tamil. His work in movies like Kaadhal Desam, Mudhalvan, Chellamae and Sivaji the Boss has been widely appreciated. After striking gold with his directorial venture Ayan, KV Anand is currently directing KO which has Jiiva in the lead.
Rathnavelu
If Sethu gave Vikram the break he needed in Tamil cinema, so it did for Rathnavelu. Nandha followed and Rathnavelu has been a part of many hit movies in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu ever since. After a hiatus in Tamil cinema, Rathnavelu shot to great fame with his fantastic visual treat in Vaaranam Aayiram. Shankar noticed his vision and did not hesitate one bit to rope in as the cinematographer for Endhiran. The result - Rajini looks 30 years younger, Aishwarya Rai looks like a teenager and Machu Pichu is hard to delete from anyone's memory.
Nirav Shah
The Dhoom cinematographer did a few Hindi movies before getting inside Kollywood. Dhoom brought him to light and since then he has seen no obstacles in his way. He has given us visually inspiring movies like Arinthum Ariyamalun, Pokiri, Oram Po and Billa. He has been nominated for the National Awards three times for his works in Banaras, Dhoom 2 and Pattiyal. His camerawork in showing Chennai of the 1940s in his most recent movie Madarasapattinam has been appreciated by everyone. He is currently working in Engeyum Kaadhal and Simbhu starrer Vaanam. ’18 Vayasu’ and 120 cameras
Various scenes in ’18 Vayasu’, a film
which has ‘Renigunta’ fame Johnny as

Panneerselvam.
Panneerselvam, whose debut movie too

director Shankar in films such as ‘Boys’
and ‘Anniyan’ for a couple of scenes.”
“But in ‘18 Vayasu’, we have used the
expensive method to shoot at lease eight
important scenes. This will give a new
experience for those who watch the film in
theatres,” the director adds.
Saying that a newcomer Gayathri is paired
opposite Johnny in this film, he says, “Both
are good in front of camera. ‘18 Vayasu’
will be an important milestone in Johnny’s
