It is summer and we can feel the heat even more with “Singam” scorching the screens. The film is a classic example of a racy mass entertainer packaged with violence, action, romance and sentiment. Suriya has carved an identity for himself and has proved that 25 (it's Suriya's 25th movie) is not a mere number. His shift in body language from class to mass is commendable.
Racy story
The story revolves around Duraisingam (Suriya) an honest, diligent, police officer who wants to clear up all the bad elements and make his area a heaven. The story begins with an action sequence, which is beyond human reach. He lives in Nallur, a village in Tuticorin district, with his family and has been posted as the SI of the village. He had joined police service due to his father's compulsion. The scene shifts to Chennai where our all-time favourite Prakash Raj - who plays dada Mayilvaganam - and his brother Vaikuntam terrorise the city. Anushka (Kavya) lives in Chennai with her father an entrepreneur of a renowned cycle company. She arrives at Nallur for vacation where she meets Suriya and falls in love with him. Meanwhile Prakash Raj gets trapped by the police in a kidnap case and has to go to Nallur for legal reasons.
Performances
Now he comes face to face with Suriya and is struck by his bravery. He transfers him to Chennai, his home town to seek revenge. Now, like in all Tamil movies, how Suriya unravels all the secrets and under-the-table work of Prakash Raj and defeats him forms the rest of the plot. Suriya's screen presence is simply mind boggling. His aggressiveness is well expressed through his eyes. He has also enhanced his dancing skills. Anushka is charming and pretty and has portrayed her character with elegance. Devi Sri Prasad's music is pulsating especially the title song and “She stole my heart”. Vivek's comedy track is good but not commendable. I felt that there was an over dose of violence.
Above all, the credit goes to director Hari who has proved his mettle.
Bottomline: Punch dialogues, action, love, comedy — this is what Singam is all about. We may come across such stories in Tamil cinema but “Singam” has that spark and pace which keep it going. So to beat the summer heat, just give it a shot, you will surely enjoy it.

Anushka created a flutter when she went on a “Thanksgiving” mission to Indrakeeladri hillock, abode of Goddess Sri Kanaka Durga, on the banks of River Krishna near Vijayawada on Tuesday (June 1) afternoon.
Over 5000 fans of the actress, who has a huge fan following in Andhra after that blockbuster Arundathi thronged the hillock, at the entry and exit points of the temple to have a glance at the ravishing actress.
Anushka arrived at the venue two hours behind the schedule, despite which the huge crowd stayed under the scorching sun (42 degrees in Vijayawada area on June 1). The police had a tough time in controlling the crowds.
Later, the temple authorities who were awed by Anushka’s visit presented the temple Prasadams and portrait of the Goddess to the heroine.

I am amazed how they keep on churning the same kind of stuff film after film and still see success.
I was amazed to see Prakash Raj doing the same role he has done in a 100 films before - surely he must have been yawning throuughout the making of the film.
I was amazed to see the sheer talent of Suriya wasted on pedestal stuff such as this.
I was and still am truly and honestly amazed.
Long live tamil cinema and its fans.

Oh, btw the film is roaring in Malaysia. When it opened, all cinemas stopped showing other Tamil films and Singam took over completely.
Most cinemas including GSC and TGV chains were showing Singam in multiple halls.
Tickets were unavailable on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Summit and Sunway Pyramid was the worst.
Capsquare had some problems with the telephone booking and thats where we got the tickets, and that too in the front rows.
Asked the counter why the difficulty, his reply was "Suryanaa summaavaa."
No matter what some may say, Malaysia has completely been taken in by Surya.
It was the no. 2 movie in the opening weekend, second to only Prince of Persia and beating all other Hollywood, Chinese and other movies.
I am sure that this movie is going to do better than Aadhavan, thus pushing Varanam Aayiram down further.
And that is the real tragedy.

Watched Singam yesterday.
Plus
-anuskha looked hot (a lot of people think that she's fat, but i personally dont think so). Also, her lip sync was accurate(i hate when people can't mouth properly to the dialogues)
-vivek's comedy for the most part (i know a lot of people didn't like but i thought it was okay)
-songs were okay(picturization was ok was well) The songs definitely not up to par compared to ayan, aadhavan, VA
-Surya's improving his dance, but still needs work
-fights were ok, not so unrealistic
-the ending was nice: even with the predictability
Minus
-surya looked like he was overacting:always shouting, and too much anger in the fight scenes. (you don't really need shout to show anger, there's other ways. This was consistent from the beginning till the end of the movie)
-too many fight scenes I stopped counting, if i were watched it on dvd would have probably forwarded say 30% of the movie(well atleast it seemed like to me)
-censoring of anuskha's bodyparts

-2nd half though a lot of you said was racy, i thought it was too long(probably because of too many fight sequences) I liked the first part as compared to post interval.
All in all, its an okay movie. I personally prefer to see surya in varanam ayriam

type movies. Of his last 4 movies my ranking goes like this:
1)VA:
2)Ayan:

3)Aadhavan:

4)Singam:

Karthi, I was not shocked, I was amazed.

TA, in the scheme of things, aadhavan was better in the sense it had some semblance of a story, with some twists. singam has no story and is so linear that it could have been a ruler.
PS, you cannot stop, can you?

With 72 shows everyday, the film has been doing very well there, and has nearly filled up houses. PVR Goregaon saw more than 60 per cent occupancy, which is a considerable number. The multiplexes are really happy to see the way Suriya's film has worked out in the box, and after Kites flopped, they were happy to see a good film working well in the box.
On the other hand, collections worldwide have been going really well. The US box office has been going crazy for Suriya, and Singam is doing really well, according to the sources. Thanks to the Memorial Day weekend rush, the collections are really good, and the 30 screens in 24 locations in US has been going full house for now. Fans are going crazy to see Suriya's antics, and the film is grossing out to make to the top rank in Tamil hits in the USA. This might become the highest grossing Tamil movie of the year in USA.

Singam: This lion emerges king
Lionising the hero in every way possible and Mr. Invincible living up to it, the heroine pining for his love, the three-duet syndrome, a vociferous villain, a comedy track … nothing about Singam (U/A) is new. Yet, patterned like the MGR films of the 1960s, Kamal's commercial outings of the 80s, Rajinikanth's staple of the same era and some of Vikram's present-day bonanzas, Singam proves another strong contender for the winning slot in the action-entertainer category. Hari turns up trumps with a particularly racy screenplay that you forget the clichés in the exercise and enjoy the fun. Singam is Hari's own Saamy, refurbished. His acumen in making an oft-seen cop tale work at the box office deserves to be lauded. Hari's screenplay is the king in Singam!
Hari and Suriya come together once again after Aaru and Vael — as far as pace goes, Singam, their third, is easily the best.
Duraisingam (Suriya) is a reluctant member of the police force — he prefers taking care of his dad's grocery store instead. But once on the job, he proves infallible. Fate brings the cantankerous Mayilvaganan (Prakash Raj) to the small town of Nallur. Singam is the inspector at the police station there. Like all baddies, initially Mayilvaganan doesn't realise the power of Singam's brain and brawn. And when he does, it's too late.
Suriya shows that be it a performance-oriented role or a formulaic concoction he can deliver. Vim and vigour mark the hero's enactment. Anushka, the Telugu screen siren has struck gold, albeit in a role that is at least four decades old, after her initial appearances in Rendu and Vaettaikkaaran. You feel sorry for Prakash Raj — he opens with a don's usual, haughty rigmarole only to bite the dust in the end. All the same, he adds zing to villainy in characteristic style. Why don't directors give him roles that are less predictable?
Like in all Hari films you have a battalion for a cast that the screen looks overcrowded most of the time. Among them ‘Bose' Venkat as the able aide of Singam does a neat job. Vivek's character of ‘Erimalai' tickles but it is time his comedy-track writer has a re-think about the innuendos.
Singam doesn't have dull moments, yet Suriya's monologues to his opponents could have been pruned. Editor V.T. Vijayan's contribution to the pace of Singam deserves mention. Like in most of our films, the henchmen here still go around brandishing cumbersome sickles and scythes!
The lion superimposed on the hero whenever he bashes up the villains is rather funny. I mean, the relevance needn't be dinned into!
Devi Sriprasad's ‘Naanae Indiran …' has a distinct heard-before feel and the numbers in general are typically Sriprasad. The composer rarely plumps for melodies — ‘En Idhayam …' is a slight exception. Baba Sehgal's perfect Tamil pronunciation in the ‘Kaadhal Vandhaale' number is astounding!
Suriya has astutely gone in for a cocktail of action, anger, sentiment and romance for his 25th film to satisfy every stratum of the film-going public.
Formula fare, but one that doesn't sag anywhere!
Genre: Action
Director: Hari
Cast: Suriya, Prakash Raj, Anushka, Vivek
Storyline: Of a dutiful cop and a diabolical land shark …
Bottomline: Racy screenplay overrides formula

Singam - Vikatan Review

Not sure whats the big deal about the height of the heroine being taller than the hero..
remembering Kamal on this occassion.. where he boldly shook his legs with Simran (even with her heels I guess) in Gadodhgaja (PKS) and Ennoda kaadhal enru pesa vaithadhu (Pancha thandhiram).. It was soo obvious that KH was much shorter than Simmi but he knew this fact..
not sure whoz idea was it to put some effort to show Surya as taller, but they should take the leaf from Kamal's book that height doesnt matter

Brothers rocking kollywood BO in the first half of 2010!
Summer Usual. Fridays Unusual
IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 04, 2010]
This Friday June 4 is rather unusual. It marked the first Friday after summer vacation and it has stealthily broken without a single film release. The only release of this week ‘Pensingam’ also did not target Friday and got released on Thursday for its own good enough reason.
The summer fever started well in advance as most of the producers held their films to make best use of the school vacation. If you carefully look at the summer releases, in the anxiety to cash in the summer vacation the producers went overcautious. The months of April and May saw 18 releases with all films releasing with its own strategic plans.
The real summer started on April 2 with ‘Paiyaa’. This Karthi-Lingusamy film held its nerve and took many by their feet. As a result there was no big release on April 9 except for a small film ‘Sivappu Mazhai’. And in the following week ‘Paiyaa’ was improving on his box office power that again made no film releasing on April 16. Films like Vaada, Guru Sishyan, Kadhal Meippada which were announced as early April releases were postponed indefinitely. But dubbed films had no fear factor and they behaved as usual. In fact the Vivek Oberoi’s high decibel Tamil dubbed film ‘Prince’ released the next week after ‘Paiyaa’. It sank with out a trace is another matter.
Again late in April there was an alarm woven around the release of ‘Sura’ starring Vijay and released by Sun Pictures in the fourth week. Unmindful of ‘Sura’ two films ‘Rettaichuzhi’ and ‘Bayam Ariyaan’ were released a week ahead of ‘Sura’. The small films had their talk in the first week but muted in the following weeks. The much expected ‘Sura’ released on April 30. Like ‘Paiyaa’, ‘Sura’ was also the single release of the week.
In May after seeing Sura’s performance for a week the much postponed films ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ and ‘Guru Sishyan’ found their places in theatres. Supporting them were ‘Goripalayam’ and ‘Kuttipisasu’. All four films were of four different genres and that called in the different sets of audiences.
There was again a lull in the second Friday of May with no eventful release except for a small film ‘Kurukku Puthi’ releasing in a couple of remote mofusil theatres. Withstanding ‘Sura’, the third week of May saw a bunch of releases. Most of them were belated releases held up for various reasons from no takers to court cases. Magane En Marumagane, Maanja Velu, Kola Kolaya Mundhirikka, Kanagavel Kaakka and Kutra Pirivu all scrambled for good theatres and got some.
This was also considered a defensive move as Sun Picture announced their second release within a month. Sun Picture which usually spaces its films to make the maximum was ready to launch ‘Singam’ after ‘Sura’ evoked mixes responses from the audiences and theatre owners.
Sun Pictures ‘Singam’ was the last major release of summer and two films ‘Kadhalagi’ and ‘Kattradhu Kalavu’ dared to journey along with the hyped Suriya film. All the three are running successfully in its second week.
But this week was no major shake as just two films were released and that too dubbed films. ‘Enakka Unakka’ is the Tamil dubbed version of ‘Drona’ Telugu film, starring Nitin, Priyamani, Kelly Dorge, Mukhesh Rushi and others. The Telugu film released in 2009 is testing Tamil waters banking on the bikini acts of Priyamani. The other release of this week is the dubbed version of much anticipated Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi thriller Universal Soldier – 3 Regeneration.
In short 20 films made it as summer releases. But the success rate is awfully low. Except for ‘Paiyaa’ which started the summer and ‘Singam’ that ended the summer there is no film which can be unanimously called big hit. It is interesting to note that the younger brother Karthi gave the first hit and the elder brother Suriya gave the final hit. So the Summer-2010 undoubtedly belonged to the brothers.
Even the next Friday hasn’t forecasted a big release and that will keep the ‘Singam’ roaring for more days.

lots and lots of negatives in the movie - but the fast screenplay made me sit and watch the movie fully rather than switching it off (like i did with the other masala movies).

Watched the movie today
even though it is the regular commercial predictable type movie it was not boring..
surya has a done job but i personally think these type of characters uttering loud punches dont suit him..expecially the first scene and in the climax..
anushka had nothing much to do..but was happy that she was there till end..most masala movie heroines disappears in interval and appear only in climax to tell subham..
vivek's comedy was unbearable i expected something similar to samy but nowhere near that..mostly double meanings and mokkai's..
prakashraj as usual played the villian character with ease as he mostly does..
the BGM was ok but was disappointed with the songs expect for one or two
the stunts could hav been better and more realistic especially the intro fight..
+ves
surya
racy screenplay
-ves
vivek
songs
predictable story
overall a good entertainer defintely worth a watch....

Anushka is on thanks giving spree
News Date:5th Jun,10
Anushka is happy with the way her career is shaping up in both Tollywood and Kollywood..
This tall pretty lass, is excited that her recently released Singam has been receiving tremendous response from all over..
Sources say, the actress had been to the Indrakeeladri hillock, the abode of Goddess Sri Kanaka Durga, on the banks of the river Krishna near Vijayawada, after her latest release Singam, opposite Suriya, was declared a hit..
The crowd there was thrilled to see their favourite actress!!

Singam has turned to Poonai
I had expected much more out of Singam because it was a Hari film. The director has churned out many good films previously like "Thamira Bharani" and "Sevval". It is the same, "Naan oru paruppu" dialogue-based movie. A well-suited script for Vijay.
Surya did justice to his role and, probably the only saving grace to the movie. Anushka, who gave a brilliance performance in "Arundhathi" was so wasted in the film. There weren't much chemistry between her and Surya.
Change the formula!

Another letdown of the movie is Bgm by DSP. There were few instances where the composer had no clue what to do. One, the kola kolaya mundhirikka part. Another one, when Nasser says that 'Ennoda rendavadhu ponna kadaththittaanga', there will be a howling female voice in the name of 'pathos'. Innum thearanum thambi..

Hari has proved it yet again: that there is still life for commercial entertainers, only if they are made with the right mix of everything without permitting the viewer a moment or two to think. Singam is Hari’s refurbished version of Saami.

There is always a big gang of opposition actors enters theaters during initial days and try to make make noises thinking that might irritate others and they also wont like the movie.. and hence wom would be bad.. Their thinking is laugh worthy is a different thing.. I had experienced this for certain.. Similiar logic thaan :P

finally saw singam
another film director hari doesnt want to change the always winning formula..the formula that brought him huge success in saamy..singam also has a similar feel as saamy..yet racy and well packaged.
hari is very gud at racy screenplays and this film is one of his best in that, but in any coomercal film if the antogonist is shown powerfully the hero wil automatically wil bcum powerful, its alwayd the bad men who run the story..in this case prakash raj is just shown as a local kidnapper and surya wins hands down..compared to saamy where kotasrinivasa rao is powerful and very evil..hari misses out on this..the hero is just invinsible
then devi's music is peppy but nothin new..Anushka

..buxom bomb..vivek's comedy is just ok..but proves hari-vivek combo is better than hari-vadivelu combo..the homesick(native)is shown well.
but one reason y u want to wach singam is surya..he really is like a lion in the film..i found his dialouge delivery much better and imrpoved than his prev films, he brings agression in his eyes so effectively, fights, dances well..carries the entire film..for me he is a blend of rajni's agrression and kamal's finesse(may b over the top)..but the man deserves it,forgot the fluent thamizh(thuthukodi accent)he spks,,VERSATILE is the word
overall if u go with ground level expectations and correct mindset for a mass masala film u wil like singam..where surya wil b the USP

Its a concept in sales & marketing. If you consider any product, it may have a distinct advantage over other competitor products. That distinct advantage is called USP.
Eg: Take Vijay. He is the best dancer among all Tamil actors. That's his USP..

PMs have been sent and examples have been given n CC. If these are not enough, then nothing will change.

OK, please end all digressions here.
Let's talk about Singam.

Friday Fury- June 11
It’s Hollywood releases that will hog the show this week. Jackie Chan-Jaden Smith’sThe Karate Kidis releasing big in Tamil Nadu along with the rest of the world.
Chan is the biggest Hollywood star in the state and the film dubbed into Tamil is expected to take a gigantic opening.
Sex and City 2will only cater only to multiplex audiences. Russel Crowe’s Robin Hood should have released two weeks back along with its international release. The delay in release and the lukewarm reports is not good news for the distributors of the film.
Meanwhile Singam will remain as the number one Tamil film and Raajneeti will continue to do super business in the multiplexes.
There are few films dubbed into Tamil from Telugu and Malayalam, which is unlikely to cause any ripple.

So the lion's domination continues...

Suriya’S ‘Yamudu’ Songs Rock In Tollywood
Tuesday June 15, 2010
Triumphs and more triumphs on the way for actor Suriya as he ’s more jubilant with his personal life and professional line…
The actor recently became dad as Jyothika gave birth to a baby boy and his ‘Singam’ is almost nearing the records of his yesteryear runaway blockbuster ‘Ayan’.
Manifestly, it’s time for the Lion to roar in Andhra Pradesh as the songs of Telugu version Singam titled ‘Yamudu’ are rocking on airs.
It’s worth mentioning that Devi Sri Prasad is topping the charts in Tollywood as his previous albums have been chartbusters. With all the songs in ‘Yamudu’
tuned out on different genres, both the melodies and fast-beat numbers have received warm welcome over there.
Especially, the amusing lyrics for ‘Oole Oole’ (Kadhal Vandhale) crooned by Baba Segal and Priyadarshini have continuously aired …

Will Singam be a break-through for Vivek?
The man who make others smile, now himself has a reason to smile. Vivek is enjoying the positive response of audience with his comedy in “Singam” film.
Director Hari rescues Vivek for the 2nd Time in the actor’s career. He earlier did it in “Saamy” when Vivek was struggling after the failures of “Kadhal Virus”, “Kadhal Sadugudu” and “Popcorn” after the release of “Saamy”.
Apart from huge Success, the film also awarded Vivek, the best comedian of the year in Filmfare.
Now Singam doing well at the box office, Vivek is all set to start a new pace in his career. With hands full of movies, he is again busy in the industry.
The actor is currently engaged in movies like “Vaada”, “Bale Pandiya”, “Nalvaravu”, ''mapillai'' and the list go on.

The major negative was vulgar dialogues. U can't call it double entendres bcoz they directly convey the meaning. There is no point claiming it to be referring to some other thing. It was straight forward.
Coming to vivek he was above average for me. In some instances he was excellent. The theme music for him was also perfect

Singam songs are getting addicting now for me... inititally i hated the album except for singam singam hes durai singam! Now im startin to really like Kadhal Vandhale, Singam Singam, and Idhayam after repeated listening! However i still don't find the song she stole my heart that attractive cause i feel its too repetitive and doesnt really create any feelings... shaan has better songs like oh divya and my dil goes mmm and other hindi songs!still not a fan of dsp though..... But for now:
"Everybody listen samba pamba rumba thumba
Everybody membo chembo pembo calling a party
Everybody move it move it move it move it Now
Everybody run-in cum-in it's time to the party
Everybody listen samba pamba rumba thumba thumba
Everybody crew in shaking Moving becoming Naughty
Everybody gorin gorin gorin gorin goringo
Everybody time to move on life isn't just a party!!!" and
" Hey Vaadi Vaadi Nee Vaada Malli Poothandi
Iduppu Konda Usi Siripu Window AC Thann
Hey Mudhugu ThekkuMaram Mulusa Patha Joram Thann"

Behindwoods top ten songs '' SINGAM - 4 ''
FROM JUNE 04TH 2010 TO JUNE 17TH 2010
Song: Stole my Heart
Music director: Devi Sree Prasad
Singer(s): Shaan, Megha
Peppy romantic number that also tries to be a rock song. A pretty rasping rendition keeps the listener engaged for the length of the number and the English refrain add to the impetus that is already there. Power and grace combined.

Suriya is ‘Yamudu’
IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 18, 2010]
Suriya’s latest movie is ‘Yamudu’. It is expected to release later this month.
‘Yamudu’ is the dubbed version of ‘Singam’ in Tamil. The movie is the highest grosser this season with a business of almost Rs. 85 crores it is learnt.
In Tamil Nadu, the movie is running to packed houses. Produced by K.E. Gnanavel Raja for Studio Green, the banner that had released the latest ‘Aawara’, ‘Yamudu’ is about an honest police officer.
The movie is an action entertainer that will leave the audience spell bound. The movie is directed by Hari who made ‘Aaru’ with Suriya before. Devi Sri Prasad scores the music for this movie. This is not the first time Suriya is playing a police man. He had done the Tamil version of ‘Gharshana’ as ‘Kaakha Kaakha’ which was also a blockbuster.
Suriya in a cop dress again? Sounds cool! Catch ‘Yamudu’ in theatres soon

Tried to roar....and atlast managed a meek one. (thanks to 'surya')
Tired of usual masala, dumb villain, extremely illogical romantic situations.
Paarkalaam. SURYKAAGA mattum. Some clever plots (seen 100z of such plots in every heavy dosage masala movies) to nail the bad ones, are solace to the otherwise irked audience.

Nee MGR movies-laam paathathu illaya, Rajini/Kamal kooda niraya pannalaa? antha mathri movies ipppa no entertainment-meaningless movies aayiduchu.
Ragav then why its called Mass?

It should be the reason, for example Singam and VTV running in a same complex,a family with diffeernt generations will go for Singam, these movies are commomny watched by most audience than other movies.

Half-yearly BO report: Suriya rules Tamil
Known as an entertainment juggernaut for the sheer number of films that its churns out every year, 2010 was supposed to be no exception for the Tamil film industry. While some were disappointing, others were genuinely surprising.
Here's the half-yearly report-card for the Tamil film industry:
SINGAM TOP SPOT:
¤ Cast:Suriya, Anushka
¤ Director:Hari
After a string of not-so-great films, Sun Pictures seems to have struck gold with this Suriya venture.
Produced by Studio Green, Singam was helmed by Director Hari, known for earlier hits like Saami and Vel. For Suriya, this is another outing as a cop.
He plays Durai singam from Nellore, Thoothukkudi with a fierce passion for justice, and a roar that threatens to bring the heavens down, with the aid of graphics.
Lending a romantic touch is co-star Anushka Shetty, a sensation in the Telugu film industry. With a screenplay that moves at breakneck speed, Suriya's own screen presence and perfect masala components, Singam, released on May 28, has been raking in the moolah everywhere.
Trade pundits predict that it will surpass even his own Ayan's record in 2009, satellite and overseas collections included, bringing in more than Rs 40 crores when it ends its run.

Singam No : 2
Suriya – Hari team’s cop story is pretty plain, except that it’s Suriya in place of Vikram uttering dialogues similar to ‘naan police illa porukki’. It’s the right mix of family, sentiments, love and action – Hari’s forte.
Trade Talk:
Needless to say, Singam is successful and has managed to reap good profits at the box-office.
Public Talk:
The tall and pretty Anushka manages to look better than her other Tamil movies in this one.

Mani might have drawn inspiration from the character of the demon king Raavanan, but Vikram’s character in the movie comes across as a do-gooder. The ensemble star cast and the impeccable cinematography stands out in the high voltage drama.
Trade Talk:
The initial weekends are completely booked, leaving fans disappointed for unavailability of tickets.
Public Talk:
Mani has managed to wow his fans, despite the fact that movie is marred with logical flaws. Cinematography, music and the cast are the reasons.

As of now the top box office king is surya. None can deny that. MG is being paid for surya's films also.
In many theaters here singam is running to almost housefull shows despite biggy releases. Also ticket rates have come down inviting more audiences.
Already RC has been brought at a record price by a malaysian company at overseas level thus rising surya to superstardom at overseas level too.
7 AM ARIVU brings a winnning combo together again and RC brings a deadly combo. Success spree thodara ennoda vaazhthugal

Suriya joins the millionaires’ club
The overseas rights of the actor’s film, that has been directed by Ram Gopal Varma, has fetched a record price...
Suriya has joined the lucrative Tamil cinema’s overseas millionaires’ club. Yes, the overseas rights of his film
Ratha Sarithiram,
directed by Ram Gopal Varma, has been sold for a record Rs 4.5 crore (over US $1 million)!
Suriya joins the illustrious ‘million dollar club of Tamil superstars’ which includes Rajinikanth ($2.5 million), Kamal Haasan ($1.5 million) and Vijay ($ 1 million). One of the producers of the film, Madhu Mantena, says, “Yes, we sold the overseas rights for over $1 million to a Malaysia-based company. It is the highest-ever overseas price paid for a Suriya film. The film is being simultaneously made in three languages — Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. However, this sale is purely for the Tamil film’s international rights.”
On Suriya, Mantena, who also coproduced Ghajini in Hindi, says, “Ramu says that Suriya’s eyes are deadly and there is something about him that will attract the Bollywood audiences. Mark my words, Suriya is going to click in Bollywood, and perhaps, will become the first actor from the south to make a successful crossover.”
The rights have been procured by the Malaysian company after they saw some action sequences and Suriya’s performance in the film at RGV’s office in Mumbai. “We are simply awestruck by what we saw; the powerpacked action scenes are stunning. Suriya has never been seen like this before and this film is surely going to create havoc at the box office!” says a visibly excited Anand Sivam, head of the company which purchased the overseas rights.
Meanwhile, the overseas market of Tamil films is booming, as the worldwide Tamil diaspora, especially Sri Lankan Tamils, are crazy about Tamil superstars. Today, for a Tamil superstar, his huge salary depends purely on the reach he has in the overseas market. If the star is only popular in Tamil Nadu, he is not considered to be a part of the superstar league!
Suriya is fast emerging as a phenomenon in
the international market. His recent Singam—a huge hit in the overseas market— figured in the top 15 in the UK box office. Ratha Sarithiram will be released in Tamil as one of Suriya’s largest releases ever. In fact, the Mumbai trade is saying that RGV and Madhu Mantena will make more money out of the Tamil version than the Hindi and Telugu versions put together!

For action sequences his voice pitch will raise. For other scenes normal tone. This type of language is common in thirunelveli, madurai, thoothukudi areas.

Anushka doesn't prefer Tamil fims
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, June 29, 2010]
Suriya’s latest movie ‘Singam’ is releasing in Telugu as 'Yamudu' on July 2. For the occasion the team met the media in Hyderabad. Suriya, Anushka, writer Sahithi and producer Gnanavel Raja took part in the event.
At the event Suriya thanked the Telugu audience for accepting him in Tollywood. He also said he is a great fan of Anushka and was very happy doing the film with her.
But Anushka was very open, candid and surprising. She said she hasn’t seen the Tamil version 'Singam' yet even after 4 weeks of super run. But she had seen the Telugu and felt the dubbed version 'Yamudu' looked very original and she did not feel it is dubbed from Tamil any where. She also said her role was in the film was not just a glamour doll but with substance.
But what she said later is a revelation. Anushka said though she does films in Tamil her first preference undoubtedly is Telugu. ‘Singam’ was her third film and first hit in Tamil after ‘Rendu’ with Madhavan and ‘Vettaikkaran’ with Vijay.

Prakashraj turns against Yamudu makers
Baiju NT [June 30, 2010, 4:12:37 PM]
National award winner Prakashraj has filed a complaint against producer Gnanavel Raja of forthcoming Telugu flick Yamudu (the dubbed Telugu version of Suriya's 25th Tamil film Singam) to the Movie Artistes Association (MAA), saying that his voice is not used in the dubbed version as agreed!
Prakashraj siad that a dubbing artiste’s voice has been used for Prakashraj’s character, consequently failing to fulfill the agreement signed between them. According to his version, the producers had agreed in principle that they would use his voice for Yamudu.
Meanwhile, it is heard that the Movie Artistes Association has expressed its helplessness as it is the producer’s or director’s prerogative to use whichever voice for a particular role. Yamudu will grace the screens across Andhra Pradesh on July 2.

Half yearly box office hits from sify
Suriya's Singam, directed by Hari, was a run-of-the-mill mass masala film, but it was watchable because of the awesome performance of Suriya as a cop.
Hari refuses to move away from the comforts of the formula, and believes that he can go on rehashing his earlier films.
Ultimately, it is Suriya who carries the film to the winning post. His passion and the way he brings an ordinary, regular, larger-than-life hero alive on screen is a lesson for other commercial heroes.
Verdict: Super hit

Behindwoods Top 10 Songs
FROM JUNE 18TH 2010 TO JULY 01ST 2010
Song: En Idhayam
Spot: 4th place
Music director: Devi Sree Prasad
Singer(s): Suchitra, Tippu
A mellow number from DSP, something that we don’t get to see too often. He is more into energy and rhythms. But with ‘En Idhayam’ he breaks away from his regular mould. This one is a pretty simple composition, rendered with the required effect. The song moves at a relaxed and easy pace throughout with not too many sounds. A soothing romantic number.

Suriya’s unstoppable roar continues with ‘Yamudu'
Saturday July 03, 2010
With his dubbed version of ‘Singam’ going ahead with grand success in Tollywood box office, the fans following Suriya have innumerably increased in Andhra Pradesh.
This needn’t be a guess, as it’s gonna be a right term to put this way. Suriya will sooner join the bandwagon of superstars in Tollywood as his films are remarkably doing well.
Recently, his 25th film ‘Singam’ was dubbed in Telugu as ‘Yamudu’. Released by Studio Green, the film is swaying at its best with good response.Suriya will continue get-going as all his upcoming films will be simultaneously released in Telugu as well.
Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Raktha Charithra’ and A.R. Murugadoss’ ‘7 AUM ARIVU’, the most expected films from the actor will be direct Telugu releases apart from Hindi and Tamil.
With an ease, things can be predicted that Suriya will capture the universal audiences towards far-flung corners with earnest approach and charismatic appeal.

Movie Review: 'Ravaan' Mutes Singam's Entertaining RoarSambhu Sankar finds Singam the entertainer of the year so far, if cinema is all about a couple of good hours.
On Jul 11, 2010
Cast: Surya, Anushka, Prakash Raj, Vivek, Radha Ravi and Nasser
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues and Direction: Hari
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
With most of the movies under the Sun Pictures banner being mediocre mass entertainers, there was nothing much expected of ‘Singam’.
Even a star-studded cast including Surya, the sexy Anushka and stalwarts like Prakash Raj and Naseer, didn’t entice the expected number of people to the big screens. Nevertheless, the movie can be easily considered the best entertainer of 2010 as of now.
The story is nothing to write home about. Durai Singam (Surya) is an intelligent and a dedicated police officer in a little town called Nellore, who joined the force only because of his father’s insistence. He has a way of settling disputes in his locality by amicable talks and compromises. He leads a rather peaceful life in his hometown. Then comes Kavya (Anushka) who is on a vacation to her native and predictably falls in love with the young and daring Durai Singam. Things look honky-dory until Mayil Vaganam (Prakash Raj), a gang lord locks horn with Singam. The action packed second half of the film keeps you at the edge of your seat.
Surya as the young and daring police officer, a role that he has mastered over the years, is a pleasure to watch. His dialogue delivery, his characteristic naughty expressions and fanciful stunt sequences charm the audience (the female of the lot in particular). Anushka as his ladylove has done justice to her role though there’s really nothing much in her role to gauge her acting skills. Vivek, who is largely eclipsed by Vadivelu in the recent years, has managed to pull a few tricks off his hat and set the audience purse their lips in smile. Prakash Raj, though in his very usual and clichéd anti-hero role, has played his part with élan. Radha Ravi and Naseer, as the fathers of the hero and the heroin respectively, have kept up to their standards.
Official poster of 'Singam' in front of a theatre
Songs by Devi Sri Prasad are passable and have a mixed response from the audience. Some claim the “Stole my heart…” number to give a hum-on-the-lips but I personally felt the “Kadhal vandhale…” number to be a foot-tapper.
The action sequences make you want to ask Newton to reconsider his theory on gravity but the charm of Surya added to that makes it bearable. Cinematography is commendable, as the man who cranked the camera has captured the essence of each and every scene with the right mix of colour and balance in his frames. The tight editing makes the movie a racy one and you reach the climax sequence even before you bite on your last bit of popcorn.
In short, it is a movie you wouldn’t want to miss if a couple of hours in a theatre is all your plan for the weekend is. Reports say that the movie has already grossed more than what the producers ever expected it to. ‘Singam’ would have easily been the best entertainer of 2010 from Tollywood, had it not been released with the over-hyped ‘Ravanan’ hitting the screens just a month after.
For the no-brainier yet a high-entertainment movie that ‘Singam’ is, I give it 7 out of 10.

The avg theater occupancy is 42% in chennai, whereas in my locality its almost housefull shows. The single screens of rural areas seem to be doing fantastic business with singam. Trade pundits say the movie is the only blockbuster of the year so far. Happy to hear this.

Raghav anna, many film gets applause and gud reviews from the audience but i haven't seen people clapping scene after scene. Main plus and reason for these applauses is the positive characterization of police rather in a negative shade that many movies do. Only the AC role done by ''Nilalghal Ravi'' was shown in a negative manner. Also it wasn't that extreme and intense as corrupt officers.

By Sify Movies Desk | Tuesday, 13 July , 2010, 11:39
The Telugu version of Singam starring Suriya and Anushka has not only obtained the biggest opening last week, but it looks as if the film would turn out to be a big hit. Despite the pirated VCD`s of the original Tamil film storming the market, Yamudu which was released after a gap of nearly four weeks got a stunning opening.
Singam was declared a hit from all the big distributors of Telangana, Rayalaseema, Utthara Andhra (Vishakapatnam, Vijayanagaram, Sree Kakulam) and Coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari. The Athadu impact has certainly affected the collections of Jhummandi Naadam which has also been affected by piracy.
Though the trade pundits are surprised over the hugely enthusiastic response for Yamudu, Suriya's Telugu films have always had a decent run in the Andhra. The Suriya-Tamannaah starrer Veedokkade, the remake of the super hit Tamil film Ayan directed by K.V.Anand which was released a few months ago also took a great opening in Andhra Pradesh.
The actor's biggest grosser in Andhra Pradesh is however the dubbed version of Ghajini, but it looks like Yamudu might overtake the collections in a few weeks. The fact that Anushka is a very popular actress in Tollywood has also helped Yamudu to register a fantastic opening. Yamadu's villain Prakash Raj has always had a large fan following in Andhra.
Currently it is Suriya who is the reigning King as for as dubbed Telugu films are concerned. Vikram, who is the other favourite actor of the Telugu audience has however failed to click with Villain and Mallanna, which were the Telugu versions of Raavanan and Kanthasamy.

Friday Fury- July 16
Friday, 16 July, 2010
July 16 is a crucial date for south Indian film trade. It is the last Friday before the inauspicious Aadi Masam starts from July 17. So this Friday, there are three or four releases in all south Indian languages.
Friday, July 16 is crowded as there are three Tamil films -Virunthali, Pollachi Maapillai, Prabhakaranin Devaleelai. Earlier releases Madrasapattinam and Kalavani are rocking the box-office in Chennai city.
Number of shows and screens of Raavanan has been reduced as Singam is still going strong and celebrating its 50 days run.
Two big Hollywood films are releasing simultaneously with the rest of the world Christopher Nolan’s Inception and its Tamil version Kanavu Vettai and the action fantasy The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and its Tamil version Mayavalayam. Everybody in Kollywood wants to see Inception as there were wild rumours that Murgadoss who copied Nolan’s earlier Memento as Ghajini, some how got hold of a DVD of his new film before release and is making 7am Arivu!!

SURIYA HAS REASONS TO BE HAPPY
July 16, 2010
Suriya’s Singam, released around a couple of months ago, has successfully reached its 50th day in the run all over the release centers. Apart from the other parts of Tamil Nadu where it is continuing its business, the movie is also keeping the turnstiles busy at the theatres across Chennai city. Singam is an action entertainer from the Hari stable and has Suriya in the lead playing a socio-responsive cop who attempts to fix the system single handedly. Anushka is cast as the heroine and DSP handles the music.

B'woods top ten songs
From July 2, 2010 to July 15, 2010
Movie: Singam ~ 7th spot
Song: Stole My Heart
Music director: Devi Sree Prasad
Singer(s): Shaan, Megha
Heavy guitars and drums try hard to bring a ‘rock’ touch to this number and it ends up quite amusing. The unplugged version is neater.

Dubbed films bounce back
BVS PRAKASH Times News Network, Jul 29, 2010
After a brief lull, Tamil dubbed films are back in the reckoning with the latest Suriya flick Yamudu grossing more than Rs 13 crore (sold for 6 crore) and is still counting.
“My earlier dubbed films Veedokkade and Ghatikudu had potential but suffered due to poor promotion and bad selection of theatres,” Suriya had said. So, this time around, his uncle and producer Gnanavel aggressively promoted their cop story and chose the right theatres. “Our publicity blitz did work and also there were no big star films clashing with ours,” says producer Gnanavel who adopted a similar strategy for Karthi’s Yuganiki Okkadu and Awara and walked away with more than Rs 9 crore for both films. “We left no stone unturned to make these two films commercial hits,” he adds.
That is how K-town stars expand their fan base in AP, whereas Telugu stars are reluctant to enhance their limited market, says a leading distributor. “Reigning Tamil stars shell out Rs 50 to 60 lakh to promote their films in Andhra Pradesh. Whereas, our Telugu stars are reluctant to spend even a penny

to promote their films in Tamilnadu. Apparently Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vikram, Surya, Vishal and Karthi are pocketing anywhere between Rs 5 to 15 crore from the Telugu industry. Except for Allu Arjun who touched the Rs 1 crore mark in Kerala, other T-town stars dubbed films are sold for just Rs 15 to 20 lakh. At least to justify their huge pay packets, our stars should push the envelope to attract pan-south Indian viewers,” he reasons.

This is what the Galatta magazine authors had to say about the height issue between this duo - '' Whoever thought height is an issue, watch and learn from this fab couple ''

'' He says Anushka is an absolute professional on the sets and she says Surya is very professional and shows utmost dedication.. And when it came to the romance, they were pros !! The love comes naturally, the sweet nothings, secret phone calls, the jealousy... For the reel, or for real !! ''

Singam to be remade in Kannada ! [August 18, 2010]
The super hit Tamil film Singam starring Suriya and Anushka will be remade in Kannada as Kempe Gowda.* In all likelihood, Sudeep or Darshan will be the hero of Kempe Gowda. The Kannada remake rights were acquired by Shankare Gowda. Will Sudeep give up Kanwarlal and concentrate on Kempe Gowda ?
Some sources feel otherwise, saying the content of Kempe Gowda is quite similar to his earlier film Thirupathi which crashed at the box office. Many film sources opine that since Kempe Gowda was the founder of Bengaluru, any film named Kempe Gowda should have an original and fitting subject. For remaking Singam, the title Kempe Gowda does not really match well.
So one has to wait and watch who will be the hero in the remake, who will direct it and what it will be finally titled.

Peepli Live is India's official entry for Oscars
Peepli Live, the Hindi film produced by actor Aamir Khan, will be India's official entry to this year's Academy Awards (Oscar) in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Announcing this at a press meet here on Friday, selection committee chairman K.S. Sethumadhavan said: Peepli Live is a reflection of India's culture and ethos, even as it highlights the burning problem farmer suicides.
During the selection process, Tamil movie Angadi Theru competed closely and we considered various criteria before selecting Peepli Live
Film Federation of India president L. Suresh said. Calling Peepli Live a social satire,' producer-director Ravi Kottarakara said it brought out the pain of poverty. The subtle humour, which runs throughout the film, sends across the message of social awareness in a far more effective way than amelancholic film would, he added. The selection committee comprised 15 members, including directors S. Krishnaswamy, Jayaraj and Sekhar Das, sound recordist S.K. Srivastava, writers G. Neelakanta Reddy and C.G. Rajendra Babu, music director Gangai Amaran, and costume designer Anu Vishnu.
Five Tamil films Singam, Madharasapattinam, Angadi Theru, Raavanan and Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya were among the 27 films initially shortlisted.
Paa, Raajneeti, My Name is Khan, Three Idiots and Pazhassi Raja also made it to the list.Directed by journalist Anusha Rizvi, Peepli Live is about farmer suicides in the country and talks about how the media and politicians handle the issue.
