Vettaikaaran Movie Review
This year’s Diwali was a lackluster fare for Vijay fans as the most expected release of Vettaikaaran was postponed to a later date. Whatever might be the reason behind it, we knew that Vijay will overcome all hurdles and emerge out like never before very soon. Two months later, Dec 18 has marked the beginning of real Diwali for Vijay fans with Vettaikaaran hitting the screens worldwide, and most importantly, it is hunting box office collections and viewers’ hearts like never before, right from its first day.
We at OVF bring you the review of the film from a fan’s standpoint, because there are innumerable reviewers in movie websites who might give you their personal opinions and sometimes grudges in the name of unbiased reviews. Having said that, this review and hence the film makes less sense for those who watch Vijay movies only with the intent of finding faults or giving negative reviews, those whose logical senses and intellects wake up only while watching Vijay films, those who write reviews without even watching the film and those Vijay fans who are fed up with commercial entertainers of Vijay. With three average films in the past and the last film getting mixed response from his own fans, it requires lots of guts for a person to work in a film with a debutant director and a team, though comprising of talented people, does not boast of any ace names in the industry. Only Ilayathalapathy Vijay can make it possible with his extreme confidence and hardwork. And most important, to give an output with this team, that is exceedingly well done than films of recent past, definitely needs a hats off.
Spoiler alert
Vijay plays the role of a small town youth Ravi, who in his desire to join Police force rechristens himself as Police Ravi. Considering encounter specialist Devaraj(Srihari) as his role model, he makes sure everything in his life happens in the same way as it did for Devaraj. He moves to Chennai for his college studies where he falls in love with Suseela (Anushka). Driving an auto for his self earning with the help of his classmate Uma(Sanjitha Padukone), his life is all fun until he locks horns with local goon Chella(Ravi Shankar) which lands him up in jail.
Ravi is planned to be killed in encounter with the help of corrupt inspector Kattabomman (Shayaji Shinde) and Suseela comes to know that Ravi’s role model Devaraj is also a part of this plan. Does Vijay escape from the encounter? Is his role model Devaraj a baddie? How does Ravi take revenge on those who trapped him and pay them back? The rest of the plot of Vettaikaaran answers these questions.
Spoiler Alert Ends
Vettaikaaran is another racy commercial entertainer from Vijay like few of his earlier movies, but what makes it standing out is the handling of the subject and a fitting screenplay for which director Babu Sivan gets the credit. Right from choosing the cast, conceiving the scenes and making the screenplay engaging, his efforts to make the film successful are visible all over. His screenplay has all elements to satisfy Vijay fans and to keep the general audience glued to seats, considering that the film doesn’t even have a separate comedy track. His dialogues are also precise and not overdone. For a debutant, he has done a good job by mixing all commercial elements in right proportions for entertainment.
With respect to cast, Anushka does share a good chemistry with Vijay. She looks beautiful, dances gracefully and does her role perfectly. The Vijay-Anushka pair in songs is a lovely visual treat and they make a lively pair in the comedy and romantic scenes too. She shares a good amount of screen space in first half and makes a memorable presence in second half. Sanjitha Padukone, playing a sister-like friend to Vijay does a good job too, though we miss her in the second half.
Srihari as Devaraj has an important role to play especially towards the climax and performs well. Shayaji Shinde as the corrupt policeman impresses with his acting and provides some comic relief too in second half of the film. Salim Ghouse as the main villain Vedanayagam and Sai Kumar’s brother Ravi Shankar as his son Chella share meaty roles, pitted against Vijay. The other supporting cast including Sathyan, Sugumari and Manobala has done their roles to satisfaction.
Racy Music from Vijay Antony with songs already being chartbusters and a background score that suits the mood of the film are major credits for the film. The songs are all shot well with Puli Urumudhu topping the list. The song which shows the rise of Vijay in second half makes a big impact by giving the required adrenaline rush and placed perfectly in the film. The intro song “Naan Adicha” is very well choreographed by Shobi and towards the end when Junior Vijay aka Sanjay enters, the theatre is in splits. The kid does a very well stylish job true to the reputation of his father. Other songs are also visual treats and placed well in the film.
The brilliant cinematography by Gopinath who earlier impressed in Ghilli and Kuruvi is another plus, as the camera takes you through the fun-filled first half and fast-paced second half with the same ease. Editing by V.T.Vijayan ensures in keeping the audience engaged from beginning to end. Stunts by Kanal Kannan are mostly very good, unlike the past two films of Vijay and the unwanted elements have been avoided. The scene before interval where Vijay jumps off the waterfall is picturised very well. There are many good sequences in the film, especially the Vijay-Anushka scenes mixing romance with humor in the first half and the plots Vijay makes against the villains in the second half.
The review is not complete without talking about Ilayathalapathy Vijay who gives the blood and flesh to the skeleton of Vettaikaaran and makes it lively. Looking youthful as never before, dynamic and vibrant throughout, he has shouldered the biggest responsibility of satisfying his fans and general audience entirely. His dialogue deliveries, graceful and unmatchable dance movements in songs, hard hitting action and romance are always known for its brilliance. What is above these in Vettaikaaran is the gamut of expressions he brings in every frame, be it comic timing, anger, emotion or love. His hardwork is evident in every frame. This film proves why Vijay is exceptionally best in the school of casual acting. The minor changes in getup he has done for a few short sequences are impressive. His style and screen presence leave a big impact on you and it is one of the best performances of Vijay in recent years.
Though it is Sun Pictures’ Vettaikaaran that has made the film reach every nook and corner this time, it is Vijay’s Vettaikaaran that is going to stay in the minds of people in the coming months. While this is a perfect Christmas treat for Vijay fans, it is also a clean entertainer for anyone who likes watching Vijay onscreen.
With respect to the comeback part, Vijay has never gone away to make a comeback. His films might have taken a back seat due to failing screenplays or directors, but he has delivered constantly even in those bad times. But this time, it is that extra mile he has gone past his consistent delivery that makes Vettaikaaran worth all its watch.
Verdit: A wholesome Vijay entertainer

met one of the distributors in chennai, nd asked about vettaikaran collection details in chennai, he said that the movie is netted around 8 cr as up~to now....nd heard sivaji has netted the highest collection in chennai as well as in tn, in chennai alone 14 cr
it seems nd overall collection of sivaji is 90 cr...nd he said sivaji is the biggest hit in tn , followed by dasavatharam, pokkiri nd ayan....

sivaji~14 cr
dasavatharam ~ 11 cr
ayan ~pokkiri ~ kandaswamy around 9 to 11 cr(not much difference in dis 3 movies in collection wise)

Most of the vettai screen's has been reduced due to the pongal release, now another set of new movies is releasing in a week, so very less chance...but vettai chennai rights has been sold for 4 cr , nd the distributors had an enough profit
if the movie released for diwali, it would have even touched sivaji's collection..

Vettaikaran---- The Final Verdict( Honest Non-Bias Opinion by Sudarsh from the perspective of people who can appreciate good movies)
Hey guys,
I saw Vettaikaran now for the second time with my family and I am really dissapointed to say it did not amaze me infact I was almost bored throughout the whole movie and everyone in my family got really dissapointed just like the last 9 Vijay films. I'm still shocked as to how i wrote such a good review the first time I saw this movie. And now i finally realize that i had gone totally mad because I am a die hard Vijay fan so even if the script is crappy and direction is not great I still appreciated this film only because they did one thing that was different that is REDUCE DRAGGING, and FAST QUALITY STUNTS WHERE THE VILLAINS DO NOT GET BACK UP AND FIGHT AGAIN. OTHERWISE IT WAS A VERY POORLY DONE FILM AND WHEN I SAID IT IS THE BEST VIJAY ACTION FILM IT IS TRUE IT IS THE BEST Tamil action film and Vijay action film! But however it is not the best directed or best written script at all. So the only reason I must have given such a good review for this the firs time is because those two things that I've been praying for in Tamil Cinema finally occured. So the only thing other tamil directors should learn from this film is to make good quality stunts that end fast like this and to be less draggy that's all! However they should not use this movie as an example for a good script, songs, or even the comedy. The comedy in Ghilli was much better compared to this film. Another reason why i have written the third review is to prove that even though I'm a die hard Vijay fan I can give you a honest review! I might have enjoyed it more when i saw it first time but however after second time only i realized that I had gone mad!!! and supported anything done by Vijay only because it was better than his last 9 films in terms of not being draggy!!!! This movie is more a polish of his previous movies however even with the polish we have flaws such as comedy being weak and weaker storyline!
After watching this film the second time with family I felt the comedy done by Vijay was very artificial and more childish than anything else. However I know there is a good reason for this because Vijay is trying to satisfy the children and that's why a lot of scenes seem childish and Vijay acts like that! Its a movie more mean for the kids! They will enjoy it thoroughly! And the songs I felt there really was not much zest in any of the songs really!
Infact the picturization needs to better for the songs it was very poorly choregoraphed! The only reason this movie has become a hit is because of the agressive marketing on Sun Pictures for both the movie and the songs! The songs are better to hear on the Audio CD than see on the film! Another thing is the heroine Anuskha doesn't seem to have any chemistry with Vijay in the movie because she doesn't do anything other than being a glam doll and that also the director hasn't chosen the best girl for Vijay unfortunately. I felt girls like like Asin, Trisha where much better for Vijay and atleast could act.
Anuskha in this film is just used as a glam doll and nothing more. And infact in the songs she looks worse than she was during the regular story because of the overdone makeup! The comedy done by Sathyan and Srinath was also not upto the standards as they have done much better acting in movies like Unnale Unnale, Sachein...etc. Let me come back to Vijay again now! Just like the last 9 films Vijay is once again done a very stereotypical role and only thing is this time it is more childish than ever.
Vijay is an actor who is way more capable than this! If he wants to target his mass fans also he can do it with quality scripts! And he can't say he can't find any quality scripts because in the thread for Vijay updates I had posted some quality scripts he could remake. See the question is not about remaking its about remaking the right films with GOOD SCRIPTS! That's what i feel Vijay needs to do now. He has to choose good quality scripts! And there was a point when everyone liked Vijay including my family! Infact people still like him it's just they are dissapointed that he keeps doing the stereotypical roles. Once he does a quality script people will like him again till then I will have to keep praying.
I felt another reason i might have given this film a good review is because everything else this year in tamil cinema was really crap except for Ayan so the reason I might have given it such a good review was because I felt sorry that some people are treating Vijay much worse than he deserves to be treated because let me say this once again I am not attacking Vijay I'm a die hard Vijay fan! But however even as his fan I want him to be recognized for his acting and good scripts rather than his star image because those times are fading now. And another thing is Tamil Cinema has really been poor this year with all sorts of crappy scripts so I felt atleast this film should become a hit because they spent so much time and money on it! To be honest it is only because of Sun Pictures's excellent marketing this movie is a massive hit! Because when those advertisements and trailers on Vettaikaran kept going on back and forth everyone felt they had to get into the hype and see this movie. So really this film is only worth a one time watch! Better luck for Vijay in Sura! and the Malayalam film! and Bodyguard remake! Hopefully he does a better job in that and the direction is done well! I HOPE THE INTERVIEW DONE RECENTLY WHEN SA CHANDRASHEKAR SAID HIS SON WILL DO QUALITY SCRIPTS FROM 2011 AND AIM FOR BAGGING AWARDS IS TRUE BECAUSE THIS SAME QUESTION ARISED DURING THE SPECIAL SUN TV CHAT LAST WEEK AND WHEN THE INTERVIEWER ASKED HIM WHETHER HE WANTED TO BAG AWARDS AND ALL VIJAY SAID HE DOESN'T WANT TO DO ANY OF THAT! HE SAID HE JUST WANTS TO DO MOVIES WHERE HE LIKES THE SCRIPT! SO IT MAYBE TRUE OR MIGHT NOT!
FINAL VERDICT: FOR CHILDREN MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE! IT IS ONLY A ONE TIME WATCH FOR THE DIE HARD FANS AS WELL! VIJAY MUST CHANGE AND CHOOSE QUALITY SCRIPTS!!! IF HE WANTS TO CONTINUE ACTING AND DO WELL IN THE MOVIE INDUSTRY HE MUST DO BETTER FILMS AND BETTER ROLES WITH GOOD DIRECTION AND HE MUST NOT LET THE SUCCESS OF THIS FILM GET TO HIS HEAD BECAUSE IT IS REALLY SUN PICTURES THAT DESERVES THE CREDIT THIS TIME! No podaskie i saw it second time in theatres here(first time with family for Vettaikaran) in Famous Players Mississauga I'm still waiting on the original dvd! and i wasn't comparing with ghilli i know many other better Vijay films to compare with like Minsara Kanna, Youth, Shahjahan, Kadhalukku Mariyathai, Ninaithen Vanthai, Kushi, Friends, Puthiya Geethai... and Im a die hard Vijay fan! But it has been a while since I've seen a quality film yet from Vijay with a good script!!! So I've just given a more honest review of what I felt after seeing in theatres for second time! I know Vijay screen presence is enough for a Vijay movie to run but he really shouldn't be using that as the only advantage. He should also select quality scripts even for the mass fans I know people will see Vettaikaran for other reasons as well but the Agressive marketing by sun pictures still did help! because it was repeated back and forth on Sun TV.
So yes even if his screen presence is strong enough he shouldn't take advantage of that factor and just bank on his star power he should at the least select a quality script! Movies shouldn't just be about whether your movie is a hit!!! Movies should be about quality direction and storyline! And then imagine once you have a quality story and well directed movie and it is marketed massively by a company like Sun pictures how much bigger a hit it can be! So in the end I'm only pointing out things that can be a much bigger advantage for Vijay I'm not against him Podaskie I'm a diehard fan! Even as Vijay himself said there is always room for improvement and learning and he uses criticism to get better and better it helps him! So instead of thinking this as attacking him we should think of it as good tips for the future!
Sachien had better comedy and I know Vijay can do better comedy than he did in Vettaikaran for sure because he is way more capable than this for sure Podaskie and we all know that! Let's be honest here our thalaivar has done much better acting than this in his earlier films in 2000. This tiem however in Vettaikaran it was more artificial and slapstick like! It is a good comeback film though from Vijay after the utter flops of Kuruvi and Villu! a I am die hard fan but I really think acting should now be about movies should be about actual acting, with good direction, and good storyline which I don't think Vettaikaran satisfies completely. However one thing i still think all directors need to incorporate from this film into their own tamil films is the way the stunts are done fast and non dragging stunts where villains get back up and also to avoid crying scenes like this movie did! and to keep their films racy without dragging!
He should use his talent and explore it to new levels instead of banking on his star power and even if Vijay wants to satisfy his mass fans he can always do this with a good script. Reason i stress this out so much is I want to see Vijay in those kinds of powerful movies like Madambi, Romeo, Innathe Chinta Vishayam and all. And i think at this point when tamil movie directors are not having very good scripts it is very good idea to work with Malayalam directors for tamil films. This man Vijay is capable of doing all three acting, good script, and a good direcot and the day he does that watch how his life transforms forever. That day every person will appreciate Vijay for making the change. Tamil Cinema is changing by coming out with quality scripts and when VIjay gets on that boat everyone will like him Mark my words on that.
PS: Podaskie is it true that Vijay will select quality scripts after 50th? because I know that is what the article in Indiaglitz said when S.A Chandrashekar was interviewed about his son. He said he will do variety roles and quality scripts! But however when Vijay was asked same thing last week on special chat with fans for new years he said that he has no ambitions to bag awards. So i am still wondering whether I will get to see him in quality scripts!

SUN TAKES UP VIJAY’S SURA
After the astounding success of Vettaikaran, Sun Pictures have once again decided to procure the rights of a Vijay film – Sura. The film shooting is currently progressing in Pondicherry and plans are afoot to travel to foreign countries to can the songs.
Sura is due for an April release. With the shooting of the film almost half way through, Sun Pictures have jumped in to procure the rights.
Sura is directed by SP Rajkumar. It has Tamannah pairing up with the IIayathalapathy.

The big surprise is that Aayirathil Oruvan, in spite of predominantly negative reviews, is doing well in its second week and is holding on to the number one position.

hey guys this is where Vijay antony got the idea for the Asathoma theme from its from a Suresh Gopi Film in Malayalam called Chintamani Kolacase only if u watch the whole thing you will know it sounds similar the asathoma part! only thing is he changed the tune a bit to make it sound more mass like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaZ_pUcnuCE
