Dhanush does the photo shoot for Maappillai
By Moviebuzz | Monday, 09 November , 2009, 11:19
On Sunday (Nov 8), Dhanush flew down to Chennai from Madurai for a day, where he was shooting for Vetrimaran’s Aadu Kalam for the photo shoot of his new film Maappilai.
Dhanush is a happy man as Maapillai, a project very dear to him has been taken over by Sun Pictures with Hitesh Jabak as line producer.
This remake of Rajinikanth’s Maapillai, where Srividya played his arrogant mother-in-law will start rolling soon in Chennai.
Meanwhile, the coveted role of Dhanush’s mother-in-law will not be played by Jayapradha and the makers are on the verge of signing another top actress who had done lot of films with Rajinikanth in the past.

Sun Pictures acquires Mappillai
Saranya [November 5, 2009, 5:29:05 PM]
Sun Pictures made an official announcement that they have bought Mappillai from the actual producer. Mappillai (a remake of the yesteryear blockbuster which starred Superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role) will be directed by Suraaj. In the remake, Rajinikanth's son-in-law Dhanush will step into Rajni's shoes. Hansika Motwani plays the heroine.
Sridevi was to enact the role played by Srividya in the original, but it will now be reportedly played by Jayaprada. Suraaj and Dhanush come together after the hit Padikaathavan for this venture which will hit screens in 2010.

Sun Pictures takes Dhanush under its wing
November 05, 2009
The Padikkathavan combo – Dhanush, Suraaj and Sun Pictures – has once again joined hands for Maapillai. This remake of the Rajnikanth hit has garnered enough attention right from the day it was announced. With Sun Pictures acquiring the rights of Maapillai, the expectation meter has just gone further up.
The remake Maapillai has music scored by Mani Sharma. Maapillai is about the tiff between a rich and powerful mother-in-law and the poor son-in-law. While the late actress Sri Vidya essayed the role of Rajini’s mother-in-law in the original version, Jayaprada will be donning the greasepaint for the remake.
Will the trio weave the success magic once again?

Jhabaks join hands with Sun for ‘Mappillai’
IndiaGlitz [Friday, November 20, 2009]
“They are doing it”. “No, they aren’t, they have sold the rights to Sun Pictures”. Putting an end to all these guesses as to whether Nemichand Jhabak and V Hitesh Jhabak are producing or not ‘Mappillai’, an official announcement today said the producers are at the helm of affairs of the prestigious project, however by joining hands with Sun Pictures.
As per the new arrangement, the Jhabaks will be the line producers of the Dhanush starrer, which is a remake of a yesteryear Rajinikanth film of the same title. They will make the movie for Sun Pictures on a first copy basis.
Directed by Suraaj, the film which has Hansika Motwani opposite Dhanush has musical score by Manisharma. If sources are to be believed, Jayapradha has been roped in for the all powerful mother-in-law role, played by Sri Vidya in the original.
Says Dhanush, the son-in-law of the Superstar, “I am proud that I am going to do a role played by Rajini sir. ‘Mappillai’ is one of my favourite Rajini films and I had watched it many times. But never had I expected that I would do the lead role in its remake.” 'Mappillai' is going on floors starting today.

Hansika comes to Kollywood!
By Moviebuzz | Monday, 30 November , 2009, 08:46
Dhanush’s Maappilai has started rolling in Chennai and all eyes are on its leading lady Hansika Motwani the new entrant to Kollywood, where there is a dearth of heroines.
She is just 18, and has already done 10 films so far in Hindi and Telugu and one Kannada film out of which 8 are super hits.
So is this striking new face going to give the current hot favourite Tamannaah stiff competition?
She has already snatched the youngest heroine tag from Tammu, but the cute looking Hansika says: “I’m competing with myself first, as my aim is to improve my performance in every film of mine. I’m not bothered about what others are doing and I want to excel in what I do”.
Interestingly, Hansika was to make her Kollywood debut in director Vishnuvardhan’s Sarwam, which did not happen. But now she is happy, as she considers Mappillai as a perfect launch film in which she plays heroine to Dhanush, one of the top heroes in Tamil cinema.
Adds Hansika who has the perfect balance of glamour and quintessential girl-next-door looks: “I am having a blast shooting with Dhanush, and Vivek in Chennai. I am open to do more Tamil films”.
So are Kollywood film makers listening?

'Mappillai' talks about 'Mappillai'
IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 15, 2010]
Now that 'Kutty' has hit the screens, Dhanush's attention is diverted towards 'Mappillai', a remake of a yesteryear film of the same title starring his father-in-law Superstar Rajinikanth.
Produced by Nemichand Jhabak and V Hitesh Jhabak for Sun Pictures, the film directed by Suraaj has Hansika Motwani opposite Dhanush. It has musical score by Mani Sharma.
Says the actor, "The movie is not exactly a remake. We are just using the crux. Suraaj has completely changed the screenplay by adding more comedy elements. Trust me, 'Mappillai' is going to be a laugh riot."
"I am proud that I am going to do a role played by Rajini sir. ‘Mappillai’ is one of my favourite Rajini films and I had watched it many times. But never had I expected that I would do the lead role in its remake," he adds.

Manisha is Dhanush’s mother-in-law!
By Moviebuzz | Wednesday, 20 January , 2010, 17:31
http://sify.com/movies/tamil/fullstory.php?id=14928195
Manisha Koirala has been chosen to play the all-important role of Dhanush’s mother-in-law in Maapillai. The film is a remake of Rajinikanth’s 1989 film with the same title.
The film revolves around a clash between an arrogant mother-in-law who always tries to get one-up on her son-in-law. In the original, what worked was the clash between Rajini and Srividya who played his mother-in-law.
For this crucial role the makers of the 2010 Maapillai, director Suraj and Dhanush, had tried to rope in Sridevi, Tabu or Jayaprada but nothing worked.
It is going to be Manisha’s comeback in Tamil films after a very long time. Her last release was Baba with Rajinikanth in 2002.
She had debuted in Tamil with Mani Ratnam’s Bombay and had also done Shankar’s Indian with Kamal Hassan and Mudhalvan with Arjun.

Dhanush’s punch dialogue about his film “Maappillai”
“Maappillai” is the film, which features Dhanush and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles. The film directed by Suraj releases on April 8th. This major crux of this film is as similar to that of the Rajinikanth’s film “Maappillai”.
After a long gap, Manisha Koirala is also acting in this film. So, there are lots of expectations among the fans. Even in this film’s trailer, there is a punch dialogue, which comes like this – “We would drink the Poison itself like “Payasam”, when we get “Payasam”, would we leave it so easily?”
Regarding this, Dhanush has told that, “There are no Punch dialogues in the film “Maappillai”. But, all the dialogues in the film would be like Punches”. We know about you and your films.

I do not know what you are expecting from Mapillai that the trailer does not appeal to you. Its out n out masala movie and the trailer is tailor made to project what you are going to see in 180 mins. Notable things :
Danush tries his hand on Punches, but misses the delivery badly
BGM, Songs => too load
Reminds of Sullan where everyone shouts at everyone
Manisha Walking, Car blowing .... well reminds of the famous Nadia/C Sundar scene
A double déjà Vu. Appreciate Danush taking up different type of projects, and ofcoarse its time for "Danush Masala". I welcome the movie.

Definitely Adukalam was a good one, his performance too was good.. He need to be selective on the movies(story & director) if he wants to stay longer in the Industry..

The review is out in Sify.
By Moviebuzz
No beating around the bush. Mappillai, as promised, is a mass masala entertainer that makes no bones, no pretences and has a distinctly comic-book feel to it. It is exaggerated and formulaic, but relies squarely on the charm of its leading man to pull off its over-the-top tone.
Saravanan (Dhanush) is introduced as a Mr Nice guy who is upright and god fearing. He meets Gayathri (Hansika) the only daughter of Rajalakshmi (Manisha Koirala) a rich arrogant business tycoon. When she comes to know about Gayathri’s affair with Saravanan, she immediately arranges for their marriage as she wants a docile, henpecked husband for her daughter!
But just before the wedding, Rajalakshmi is in for a shock as she comes to know that Saravanan has another face and is a terror in his area. How Saravanan marries Gayathri and tries hard to win over Rajalakshmi forms the rest of the predictable story. Will he succeed in his attempt and how he goes about it, forms the thrilling moments.
Mappillai benefits enormously from its two core strengths – Dhanush’s scorching screen presence and Manisha Koirala’s performance. Dhanush is consistently watchable and the film is a showcase not so much for his acting, but for his mass image and infectious enthusiasm. Vivek in his lengthy comic role is irritating with his funny accent, make-up and hair-style. The gags are downright silly and he seems to be taking the audience for granted.
Hansika handles her role with confidence, has a smoldering presence, and is never lost even in scenes in which she has nothing to do. Music by Mani Sharma is average with Aaru Padai... and Ready Ready Ya.. being the pick of the lot.
On the whole, Mappillai is a crowd-pleaser that knows exactly who its audience is. For die-hard fans of Dhanush, this old-fashioned entertainer is a treat and delivers enough entertainment for your buck.
Verdict: Mass Masala

Behindwoods Review
MAPPILLAI MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods Review Board
Starring: Dhanush, Hansika Motwani, Vivek, Manisha Koirala
Direction: Suraj
Music: Mani Sharma
Production: Sun Pictures
After a lull in Tamil silver screens owing to World Cup Cricket, the summer season begins with the Suraj-Dhanush combo Mappillai, whose last outing Padikkadhavan impressed quite a few. Expectations surrounding Mapillai are high primarily because it is the remake of Rajnikanth’s yester year hit of the same name and his real life son-in-law plays the role essayed by the superstar himself with consummate ease in the past. Secondly Dhanush, after establishing himself as a versatile actor in Aadukalam, is stepping onto a mainstream commercial venture once again and thirdly the humor quotient associated with Suraj and Dhanush concoction also aids in augmenting the anticipation levels.
Story wise, Mapillai adheres mostly to the original premise but Suraj has added a few and deleted some portions from the old to suit to the current times. An established and a proven template already lies in front of the director and all that is required from him was to retain the original magic and add pizzaz to the proceedings.
Having chosen to remake a hit and that too of a superstar film, Suraj has to bear the burden of comparison. It is only but natural. To sail through this, it is evident that he has relied heavily upon the caliber and capabilities of Dhanush and the talented actor has not let him down. In fact it is Dhanush’s nonchalant performance and screen presence that takes the audience through the happenings. The false compliance when he first meets Manisha, the look on his face when he checkmates her in the climax and the scene where he lectures Hansika in the mall are a few samples.
Vivek as the ardent Namitha fan with coiffured hair attempts at comedy but annoys for the most parts with his accent and logorrhoea. Thankfully, as JP, he makes up for his quirks and provides the necessary laughter that was intended.
Mapillai suffers from weak characterization especially of its lead character Manisha Koirala and this cannot be pardonable as the main premise itself is the confrontation between mother-in-law and son-in-law. There is no zing or fizz in the altercations between the duo which is where the epicenter of the film rests. One cannot but stop remembering the brilliant performance of late Srividhya and her body language.
Manisha as Rajeshwari provides a frail foil to the effervescent Dhanush and this evinces an indifferent reaction from the audience. It is like a lopsided match. To top it all, the lip sync of both Manisha and Hansika does not match making it difficult to relate with the characters. Rohini dubbing for Manisha has done a good job but Manisha mouthing the dialogue should have brought out more power emoting them. Hansika makes her debut and the girl looks plump and cute and excels in midriff exposition. The costume designer has done a good job and Manisha’s sarees and accessories are stylish reflective of her opulence.
Mapillai opens up with the comedy track of Vivek, Sathyan, Balaji and cell Murugan and its lengthiness tires. There are many logical loopholes. While Suraj can take umbrage under the mainstream cinematic lenience for few scenes, for some he cannot. An entire village unable to handle Dhanush because he is the son of a thasildar and Manisha very quickly accepting Dhanush meekly as her son-in-law are a few samples. There is no mention anywhere about Manisha’s husband. Mapillai is sprinkled with such foibles.
Some dialogues from Dhanush’s previous film have been used with a twist like ‘onnai parthale pidikkanum, paakka paakka pidikka kudadhu’.
The climax scene though illogical evokes humor especially with the gymboy Gemini Ganesan and the dialogues spoken by Asish Vidyarthi who is wasted in Mapillai.
Music by Mani Sharma is peppered with the aroma from Andhra and ‘ready readya’ number is passable but the remake ‘Ennaoda Rasi’ falls below expectations.
Suraj has attempted a remake of super star’s film but has only been half way successful in his task.
Verdict: This Mapillai entertains in parts

MAPPILAI
mokkai padam!! Watched first show here: dhanush in the same character as in sullan, padikathavan, uthamaputthiran, TA and so on...after aadukalam that's a setback!
vivek irritates a lot with his "child chinna" character, songs are dull, hansika motwani (sry guys i cant stand her), story is too cliched and even the villains are made into comedians at last..worst movie by suraj by far! Only saving grace for me was when they showed Ajith's cut out poster - semma response!! watch it @ ur own risk.

Mappillai Movie Review – The Son in Law Privileges
Mappillai is Rajinikanth’s film in 1989 which came about when he reached his star status. Dhanush emulates the firepower of Rajinikanth to fulfill his ambitions of gaining mass hero status. Living in Chennai, migrating from some far off village, Dhanush is an overtly pretending goody-two-shoe that has had a past full of violence and anger.
He has a reason for his pretentions and that is his father who suffers a heart attack due to his son’s deeds. But then, Manisha Koirala comes his way when Hansika Motwani (Manisha’s daughter) falls in love with Dhanush which he reciprocates. Then, the clash between Manisha Koirala and Dhanush begins where they gleefully throw logic out of the window.
Suraaj relies heavily upon a few commercial elements which he thinks will work to make him a successful director. First of all, Vivek’s entry, presence and appearance highlight the director’s intentions. After long, Vivek is characterized enough to elicit some laughter. Dhanush, on the other hand, is inconsistent in his performance. He can play the role of a do-gooder with ease but when he is introduced as an angry young man, he is exposed bare naked.
Dhanush can’t seem to find the grit on his face for which he gnashed his teeth to breakage. His uncertainty was so apparent for he was well aware that he was not going to match his father-in-law’s caliber. Dittoed mannerisms emulated from the superstar look gross with the hero’s scrawny appearance jolting at every fidgeting movement of the body. We wonder if it will break!
While his innocent role is watched with silent admiration, the whole theater erupts with collective jubilation when Dhanush is called, “Onna number Porukki!” When a hero is called “Porukki”, there are audiences to love it. Hansika Motwani made her debut finally with Mappillai but there will be more of her to see only in future as she is merely experimented within a characterization that is logically suspended and stupid.
However, her healthy appearance is in stark contrast with that of Dhanush that makes her look good. Manisha Koirala lacks the firepower and she did not seem any close to threatening. The hero and the audiences are at ease with the villainous deeds of Manisha Koirala which later turns funny. The totally gross characterization, performances and logical suspension together make a mishmash of scenes intended to prick the audience and give away an easy way out for the characters in the end.
“Ennoda Raasi Nalla Raasi” song exemplifies how degenerating Mani Sharma’s music is towards a song that could be remembered for long. Camera works as it should be with no real specialization, giving a cushion of comfort to the DOP except for occasionally letting the mandatory cranes swirl around. Editing is abrupt without proper transitions to the next scene.
Positives
Vivek
Hansika Motwani’s Looks
Virtually Nothing Else
Negatives
Dhanush’s Liberty towards Rajini
Virtually Everything Else
Verdict
Logic Breach No. 1: Policemen to MLAs soft-pedaling towards Dhanush’s heroic rowdyism.
Logic Breach No. 2: In Hansika’s Wedding, no visitor to the event is concerned about who the groom is or to at least try to know what happened to the real groom.
Logic Breach No. 3: At least in Aadukalam, Tapasee would not believe what Jayabalan would have to say about Dhanush but in Mappillai, Hansika only has to see a knife in Dhanush’s hand to suspect him of attempting to kill her mother (Manisha Koirala).
Characterization Error: Iron Lady Manisha Koirala suddenly turning a laughing stock!
For decades, we have been used to witnessing such stupidity on the screens in the name of entertainment but a fully retard film as Mappillai is a material worth discouraging and we must hope that we are not too much carried away by intense marketing strategies and tactics!
Rating: 1 1/2

As usual Danush was extremely entertaining - typical danush touch in all scenes
As usual Vivek was extremely irritating - this time he spoofs ajith (voice) - to make up for the obvious insult, they had danush idol worship him
As usual Manisha was wooden - never known to act, given a role that requires some acting, she fails miserably
As usual heroine (Hansika) had nothing to do except to look pretty (and of course to fill the typecast rich girl in every danush movie)
the movie is not to, and cannot, be taken seriously
would have worked in the 80s, and should have been left there.... havent we seen this since the days of pattikaada pattanamaa?
verdict: can see once if you enjoy danush antics, otherwise pretty much mokkai.
enough of me, the audience lapped up the movie. the full house cinema (in Sunway Pyramid - top cinema in Malaysia - I paid 14 bucks
) audience were laughing out loud throughout the movie.
swami nithyananda spoof got the most laughs and the legs up pose really had the audience in stitches.
Mappillai is playing in 38 cinemas in Malaysia!

Mapilai Review :
Important : Please avoid reading reviews those which say Cliché, Predictable : It was very well clear that we are going to watch "Rajini's Mapillai" Re-make. For those who want a "difference" or try "something new" out of the Re-make : Remake the movie using "Avatar" Type characters !
That said : Mapillai Plot / scenrios rest sinicere to the Original. It goes like how a "not so rich" son-in-law, teaches his "so big rich" mother-in-law our "Cluture". But the point to be noted is that none of them seem to learn the real culture. As usual in the End, we cannot make out what was there between them.
Danush, as dicussed, does his "sullan" type thing in this movie. One thing to be noted is how he potrays the innocent teenager and then gets transformed into a "sullan". Repeated dialogues and dragging scenes makes the "humour" lag eventhough each scence has a humour hidden.
Nothing to say about girl who paired with Danush. All she did was stand beside Danush. How embarassing that could have been for this actress.
Manisha has shown something of arrogence in her whole attitude, which wins over the "punch" + "bedis" of Danush.
Vivek "does not" imitate Ajith, eventhough his "voice modulation" make you feel so. He just imitates the "current" "americanised" youth of Chennai. Like 5 years back they made fun of girls speaking in such an accent, now they have inverted it. He is funny at some moments, but most of it had been done either by him or Vedivelu.
Manobala is a big releif to the comedy track. "Internet-la poduvingalo" dialouge was a perfect timed one.
Songs : They are tuned in such a way that it could suite the Telugu audience when dubbed. For us, its like having "hydrabadi biriyani" that week.
A new turn in the climax is a big welcome to such formula movies. Rather than acting as though there is no gravity, they have pulled he climax as a "spoof" to all masala movies.
Mapillai is a winner merely because its a good entertainer. Similar to initial negative reviews for "Siruthai", this film would perform well just for its "laughable" quotient.

Siruthai was a hit bcos, Karthi has a good image among family audience and Danush's audience base is no way near that of Karthi's...
Siruthai's funny scenes were intentional, unlike in Maappilai..
but have to accept that but for the comedy scenes, Siruthai was total crap of the highest order..

Please don't compare with Siruthai, it was far better in terms of EXECUTION & ACTING.

Balaajee, the comparison was made with the "initial" review both movies "got". If you permit me, I will compare them and tell you that both movies are on the same platforme in terms of execution and acting.

2) They spoiled it interms of making a mockery of it rather than a remake!

Super Star Rajinikanth’s son-in-law dhanush is regarded now in Kollywood as Mini Super Star. He is delivering super hit films from last two years. This year he got the second release ‘Mappillai’ after the tremendous success of ‘Aadukalam’ in Sankranthi season. ‘Mappillai’ in English means ‘Son-in-Law’ which is a remake to 1989 Rajini’s hit film ‘Mappillai’ which is once again a free make to Chiranjeevi’s ‘Aththaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu.’
In 1989, it was Chiranjeevi who produced ‘Mappillai’ and now dhanush as an ode to Rajini attempted the remake which had hit the screens last week with mixed openings. Hansika is the heroine while Manisha Koirala plays mother-in-law role which was actually done by Vani Sri in Telugu version. As reviewers underplayed the film, it might last for a maximum of 50 days. dhanush failed to repeat Chiru and Rajini’s magic.

did anyone saw Sun Tv Kalanidhi Maran present's MAPPILLAI spl programme - celebration of their victory in Sun Tv on Siththirai 1 @ 9:30 PM IST
this is as usual "namakku naamE perumai adithukkoLLum" programme..
really funny to watch vivek praising himself for his mokkai's along with the crew..
& Dhanush trying too hard to become a Peter
Dhanush...
I like what Suraj said... "nan Kavundamani annan poster'la irundhale podhum padam parkka poyiduven" & Suraj is Sundar C's assistant & he along with Boopathy pandian are part of some classic comedy hits of Sundar with Annan
