KANDEN KADHALAI MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods review board
Starring: Bharath, Tamanna, Santhanam
Direction: Kannan
Music: Vidyasagar
Production: Moserbaer
They have met again! The ‘Jab We Met’ remake is in town and love is in the air. Will the magic work? After the critically acclaimed Poo, Moser Baer ventures into commercial cinema successfully with Kanden Kadhalai. With a story that has already proved its worth up north and a universally accepted emotion as its basic theme; the odds are definitely in favor of Kanden Kadhalai. The team behind the remake is relatively young but highly promising. Kannan is trying to follow up his impressive debut (Jeyamkondaan) with a hit, Bharath is returning to the lover boy role after a few commercial trysts and Tamanna gets a gem of an opportunity to prove her worth as an actress who can carry off all kinds of emotions. Put all this together and we get ‘Kanden Kadhalai’, a youthful romantic drama which takes a fresh perspective on love and relationships.
Shakthi (Bharath) is down in the dumps! The big business establishment that his father has built is falling apart, the board of directors is going insane with arguments and to top it all there are allegations that his mother is having an affair with the company’s auditor. Not able to take any more of the misery he walks out of the board meeting. The day after he goes missing, everyone wonders where he is gone. In fact, even he has no idea of where he wants to go.
He just wants to escape from everything, even from himself. Without a ticket in hand or a destination in mind he boards a train. Aboard he comes across Anjali (Tamanna) who is poles opposite to him in character. She just can’t stop talking, most of which is about herself. As we discover later, the person she loves most in the world is herself. In a weird twist of events, brought about by Shakthi’s pointless sauntering and Anjali’s insuppressible energy, they find themselves together, stranded in the middle of nowhere with no means of transport for the night. They get to know each other over the period that they are together. Travelling across Tamil Nadu to get to Anjali’s home, Shakthi starts feeling lighter and better. He starts learning a lot about taking it easy. Meanwhile Anjali has plans of her own, love is on her mind. But the man is not Shakthi. However she wants Shakthi’s help to reach her lover. She runs away from home and Shakthi goes back to resurrect his business. Everyone believes that they are together, somewhere. It takes some time for Shakthi to realize that everyone believes in something that is not exactly true. So, he sets out to prove that Anjali has actually found love and life with another person. Does he find her? What is she doing? This time the tables turn. Anjali is somber and Shakthi can’t stop talking. Does love happen?
At the outset, it is important to understand that this film is not only about love or romance. It also shows at places about how life and all its ups and downs have to be dealt with. The story defends love and lovers under all circumstance. Some people might find certain thoughts a bit difficult to agree with, but that doesn’t hinder the film much. The chemistry of the lead pair which is the moving force of the film has worked well. Both Tamanna and Bharath look fresh and different in their roles. Bharath is neat and sophisticated in his role. Tamanna looks good especially in the half saree. As for her performance, she is really good while bringing out different facets of the character. It is a commendable effort. She has proved her ability to pull off a wide range of roles. The high point of the movie is Santhanam’s whacky comic act. Appearing as the bridegroom chosen by Anjali, his dialogues infuse life into the movie. The audience loves him, except when he goes into double entendre mode. This could have been avoided as it spoils the clean family entertainer status that the movie could have had. The major drawback of Kanden Kadhalai is its lack of continuity at places. There are also places where the events seem a bit artificial. The music, which is an important part of any romantic flick, has not worked too well. Only ‘Suttudhu Suttudhu’ makes an impression. Other songs don’t stick to your mind; their placement too is not apt. Camerawork is colorful and well suited to the mood of the film.
Kanden Kadhalai is a film for the youth. People with romance in their hearts are bound to enjoy the theme and the subtle hints that the movie gives about love. It seems to be giving out the idea that failing in love or work once does not mean that the world has ended, there is always tomorrow. However, a few glitches in continuity take a toll on the film. Kannan has made a not too bad follow up to Jeyamkondaan. But with his proven credentials and a young cast, the remake of a Hindi superhit should ideally yield better results. Nevertheless, Kanden Kadhalai is quite an enjoyable fare for those who love romantic flicks.
Verdict: Youth and love special

i really did not like the movie..
Santhanam recieved more cheers from the audience than any one else.. and he managed to bring some laughter..

Why on earth did i watch jab we met
Big mistake...Without watching JWM, KK would have been a good movie...Unfortunately i keep comparing it to the original
KK had loads of fun of frolic but on the emotional side, KK falls flat esp the dialogues...Kannan has messed up some of the important scenes and focused more on the comedy(which was good)...Music was a major letdown too...Tamannaah was the soul of the movie..What a parformance
Audience just loved her..Santhanam was a major plus too..

TamannA was trying hard to ape Kareena and not matching up. She has about two and half - 'cute espressions' - which she used up in Ayan itself. KamalahAsar talend-ai tap paNuraarA pArppOm
Second half, Bharathar is hilarious. Awe inspiring corporate honcho lecture, thuruthuru enthu-pattANi, louu, atvice to anyone in vicinity.

I didn't miss Santhanam at all in those 'serious' parts.
Atleast Vikraman padathulayAvadhu oru pAttule munnEriruvaanga
Dara Singh's role is played by Ravichandran
How this man afflicted with a severe acting disability continues to find work shall remain on TFI's great mysteries.
The one man who makes a singular difference is Santhanam. Our perceptive hubber HR 'anRE sonnAr' that this guy reflects a lot of GM's spirit. This must be his funniest movie till date. His antics with Singamuthu, his exchanges with Manobala, his digs at barathar, oldies.. So much so that he was given the last line in the film too !

just back after watching KK in colliseum - there is a world of difference in watching in an Indian cinema as opposed to a cineplex
movie is fine fun, altho illogical storyline. am beginning to re-like Tamana esp after the fun ayan and disaster aadhavan with nayan.
tamana shines as a fun girl and lives the character. (what went wrong in AT?
)
bharath excelled in dancing and did rather well, in spite of some deficiencies. very very unconvincing as a businessman.
santhanam's name in the film is mokkarasa, and I have to mention about him!
he is the most unfunny comedian to have ever graced tamil cinema.
tui: where is PR's chappal?
tamanna was way much more funny than him and that says everything abt him as a comedian. altho I did enjoy his performance in SSUE, he has proved that he is nothing but a mokkairaasa in this film.
Sathyan would have a much much better job.
the film went on and on and luckily I didnt have anything lined up, so it was quite bearable. story is as old as tamil cinema, and I dont know why it need to be remaked.
cinema was quite packed, but as we were walking out, one of the audience turned and asked me how was the film. I burst in laughter and he said, seriyaana dabba padanga.
for me, it was a time pass movie, with tamana providing most of the fun.
in the last scene there is a lot of kissing.
I couldnt help thinking of mahen in the role of gautam

How was Malaysian audience reaction to Santhanam. Here he was greeted with applause and every scene of his had the audience in splits.

Neither here, nor there. At times the movie is genuinely good, most of the times irritatingly imitates the original (Tamannah's reaction when the train leaves for the second time without her is one sample). I found Bharath didnt use this oppurtunity properly. The way he walks in the first scene itself told me that!
Sun pictures
They brought Bharath, Tamanna and Kannan to the stage during interval, made them talk , uttering 'sun pictures' two times in every ten words spoken, asked them questions like 'Tamannah, do you feel lucky to be part of Sun pictures for third time?' What the! Absolutely annoying.
Tamannah is no where near Kareena, but she was surprisingly good. She pulled off the emotional second half better than what i expected. Chinmayi takes the credit for half of what she has done! She looked great in person! Very simple! Second time nerla paakren.
Movie has no soul, songs were just OK (the Suresh wadkar song and the montage's where the closest the movie had a soul or something).

Feel-good factor is intact - Kandaen Kaadhalai
http://www.hindu.com/fr/2009/11/06/s...0650350200.htm
Humorous segment
Be it ‘Nizhalgal’ Ravi, Azhagam Perumal or Ravichandran, all the actors do justice. Kannan digresses slightly from Imtiaz Ali’s original line and adds a humorous segment with Santhanam, which melds well with the main story. Hilarious most of the time, Santhanam is a value-addition to ‘KK.’ His comic interludes with Manobala evoke a smile. The dialogue and his delivery of the lines are rib-tickling.

I loved Jab We Met so I'm biased but this movie did not impress me.
SPOILERS WITHIN...so be warned.
I missed the subtlety present in the original. This movie spelled out everything and the filmmakers seem to think that the audiences are not smart enough to pick up on the subtext.
The flashback with Bharath and his girlfriend in the beginning was unnecessary. In the original, you could sense the depth of feeling of the hero in just the wedding scene. The totally unnecessary fight scene at the railway station just served to show how heroic Bharath is. This totally peeved me bacause this is not an action movie and does it really matter if the hero can fight? The grandfather's characterisation was all over the place. Initially, he's all strict and suddenly later on has a change of mind? It was jarring because this change was not shown well. The boardroom scene with Bharath and his mother was also not as subtle as the original. The part during the song where Bharath searches for Tamanah and comes across the dead body was so over the top. The ending being at the railway station and especially the running after the train was so cliched. I prefered the ending being at the house which is more natural. I also missed the train conversation between the hero and the heroine in the original where the hero admits to the heroine that he loves her but that the problem is his to deal with and he will not bother her with it.
What I hated the most was the characterisation of Tamanah's boyfriend. Why must he be such a cad (the whole I may marry someone else and sending Bharath away at the end instead of the hero choosing to leave) and a coward (hiding while Bharath gets beaten up)? Why can't the Tamanah love Bharath for who he is instead of loving him as he is better characterwise than the boyfriend? Not that the boyfriend in the original (not really a boyfriend as such but more flirting with the heroine and giving her a wrong impression) was a great guy but at least he was not too obnoxious.
The comedy with Santhanam impeded with the flow of the movie. Although he was funny and had some good one-liners, the focus I feel should be on Bharath's and Tamanah's characters. The scene in the cinema theatre with the policeman also did not seem to suit the clean wholesome feeling that the rest of the movie was projecting and thus was jarring.
As for the acting, I felt that Bharath did not seem to suit the role. I especially felt this when he was speaking in the English and the direct paraphrasing of the Hindi dialogues at certain points. It all seemed too forced to me and did not come out smoothly. Of course, it does not help that Bharath is not as good-looking as Shahid
. But on the whole, Bharath was pretty decent.
Tamanah did a good job. But in the scenes where she copied Kareena, I think that Kareena was better (and I actually dislike Kareena and her acting very much and try to avoid her movies as much as possible). But I really liked Tamanah's acting in the sad scenes more than the happy, bubbly ones.
The other thing that was disappointing was the music (both the songs and the background music). The nicer songs were spoilt by the horrible pronounciation of the singers which was very distracting. The picturisation of the village song was ok and the others were meh. But I really did not like the picturisation of Tamil version of Tum Se Hi. Tum Se Hi showed the hero thinking of the heroine in some nice natural scenarios (talking at the dinner table, etc). The Tamil version had Bharath dancing for about half the song and some cliched scenes (the heroine walking away for the hero near the red car) other then the scenes copied from the original song.
I was excited that they decided to remake Jab We Met initially. I thought that Bharath might be charming enough in this movie for me overlook his average looks (like how I liked him in Pattiyal) and that Tamanah was very beautiful. But when the songs came out, my expectations dipped.
I think though that in general, Kanden Kadhalai was an ok movie as it became a family movie was obviously made for a wide audience. If you have not watched the original, you'll probably enjoy this. I just feel that the film-makers missed an opportunity to make a classic pure romance.

Actually, who would you have cast in the lead roles?
I imagine Suriya or Vikram would be good as the male lead but none of the younger ones seems to fit (if the movie was not changed into a masala family movie).
As for the female lead, I just cannot imagine any of the present popular heroines. I guess that the tricky part is acting all bubbly without going overboard and annoying the audience. Tamanah did not quite manage that for me here and neither did Genelia in SS or Bommarillu. And I can't imagine Trisha, Nayantara or Shriya in this role either. Their previous attempts at acting cutesy have been grating. Maybe Sneha? Or any of the newcomers? If only this movie was done earlier. I would have loved to see Revathi, Nathiya or Amala in their prime in this role.

I do agree with you, Mahen about Tamanah being the probably the best choice out of the current lot of popular or so-called "number one" actresses. As I said, I think she did well in the sad scenes (better than Kareena, according to me). But she did annoy me a tad in some of the happy bubbly scenes. It just felt a wee bit exaggerated which unusually enough, I did not feel about Kareena's acting (though I think that Kareena tends to overact). And since the happier scenes were more my favourite and there were more of them, I felt that Tamanah was not as good as Kareena. Well, I guess I understand now why Kareena was getting so many accolades for this role (I felt that Shahid's performance was overlooked in relative to hers). It's not an easy role to pull off. Maybe since I saw Kareena's performance first, I'm more used to her performance especially in the scenes that were almost direct copies of her performance.
Anyway, I forgot to include Asin. She has done a bubbly character in Ghajini. But since that character annoyed me due to the character's imbecility, I cannot see Asin in this role as well.
Maybe Sneha would have been better than Tamanah. I've not found Sneha to overact so far. She's managed to do well in whatever "bubbly" scenes she had so far in her various movies though they are few in number. Unfortunately she is no longer among the most popular or "number one" actresses or more accurately a "sweet young thing" by industry standards.
Actually, after thinking about this further, I wonder if I feel that the current lot of the popular actresses cannot act so well because most of the roles they have been doing are idiotic, thus putting me off them. Often I'm peeved by the characterisations of the heroines and so do not really appreciate the actress's performance and thus think that they cannot act well.
