i have a few video cassets and dvd here in u.s which I would like to send to india as picture cd that plays on a cd player. I would like to record them in a dvd recorder. Will i be able to do it? what disc (or cds)should i buy? Please help.
If the total file size of the videos or pictures is less than 4.5 GB, or if the film is a DVD-5 type, you can buy a DVD-R ( Recordable dvd ) blank dvd with capacity of 4.7GB. But if your dvd is an original movie of DVD-9 type, then you need to buy a DVD-R of atleast 8.5 GB which will cost twice or thrice the price.
One more thing - before recording VHS or Betacam or other video cassettes onto DVDs, you need to first convert it to MPEG2 video format. Only then will the dvd writer burn the dvds. And after that you can calculate the filesize also easily.
Reg the dvds you want to convert to "picture cd" - is your dvd a film or is it only of photos with or without music ? If its a film, you can copy it / burn it directly onto a blank dvd without any kind of conversion.
Besides the DVD-R, there's also another type - the DVD RW+ ( ReWritable dvd). In this type of dvd, you can record and erase and reuse / rerecord files ( data / music / videos / pictures ) many times. But the drawback is that one tends to erase and reuse the DVD RW+ bcos of which the data or files in it gets corruputed and will be lost. So its advisable to use DVD-R for one time recording / copying purposes.
