Sun Pictures buys Ninaithale Inikkum
Sun Pictures has acquired the release rights of 'Ninaithaale Inikkum', starring Prithviraj, Shakthi and Priyamani in lead roles. The movie is scheduled to hit the silver screens in September.
According to the director of the movie, Kumaravelan, "Remakes should reflect the culture of the land in which they are being made into. We have carefully remade Malayalam hit 'Classmates' as Ninaithaale Inikkum."
"The first thing we ensured when we planned 'Ninaithaale Inikkum' was that the story should undergo minor changes to suit the Tamil audience
. Lal Jose's 'Classmates' is set in a college campus had fun, frolic and emotional elements. We have recreated the same in Tamil," he adds.

NINAITHALE INIKKUM MUSIC REVIEW
Music Director : Vijay Antony
Vocals : Prasanna, Janaki Iyer, Vijay Antony, Benny Dayal, M.K. Balaji, Sheba, Maya, Ramya, Koushik & chorus
Lyrics : Kalaikumar, Annamalai, Priyan, Sheba, Prabha
Produced by Gemini Films and directed by newcomer G.N.R. Kumaravelan, this film is the remake of the Malayalam movie ‘Classmates’. Prithivi Raj and Priyamani play the lead roles and we have Bhagyaraj, Karthik Kumar, Anuja Iyer, and Sakthi Vasu accompanying them. The music for the movie has been scored by Vijay Antony.
Azhagai Pookuthe---
Vocals: Prasanna, Janaki Iyer
Lyrics: Kalaikumar
There is a soft, petal-like feel to this Kiravani raga-based number. The piano-like notes that go 'pa sa dha pa pa ni ri ni ma pa ma pa dha pa'--- and so on and the strings and the flute, along with the bass guitar, all float around the lyrics so subtly. And the vocal humming by both the singers in the charanams adds to the 'Mmm— 'effect.
Pia Pia---
Vocals: Vijay Antony & chorus
Lyrics: Annamalai
All keyboards and drums, this song but tasteful sound mixing stops it from slipping down into noisy nonsense. Has a 'baila' song like rhythm, and is typical Vijay Antony stuff. Could be liked for its flirty lyrics
Nanbanai Paartha---
Vocals: Benny Dayal & chorus
Lyrics: Annamalai
A song that is an ode to the carefree life of college-goers. Built on the Sankarabaranam raga scale, it has a suitable western touch to it that makes it feel like a Pop number. Good inputs from the strings , keyboard and – yes, the flute especially when it goes breathlessly ‘sa ri sa ni sa ri sa ni’ three minutes into the song. Benny Dayal needs to polish his Tamil words here and there (dhedhi doesn’t sound good). Could be liked by the youth.
Sexy Lady---
Vocals: M.K. Balaji, Sheba, Maya, Ramya & chorus
Lyrics: Priyan
Well, the drums sound sexier than the song itself! The ‘urumi melam’ like sounds amuse you. Balaji has sung with gusto. This number, with a very slight ‘Arabian’ touch to it, appears to be in Mayamalavagowla raga, where the notes ‘ma, pa, dha, ni’ seem to figure often but not ‘sa ri ga’. Could climb the charts.
Kalloori---
Vocals: Sheba & chorus
Lyrics: Sheba
A tiny blues-style piece about college life, to the accompaniment of guitar.
Allah---
Vocals: Vijay Antony & chorus
Lyrics: Annamalai
This song is a bit of a yawn, because it carries a clear influence of some of Antony’s old numbers. Even the rhythm is predictable.
Naatkal Nagarndhu---
Vocals: Koushik & chorus
Lyrics: Prabha
A cute little piece in Madhyama shruti, touching upon what looks like Ahirbairav raga. The title song, so to speak. Haunting rhythms.
Verdict:
Good sound mixing, but nothing to make you sit up and say ‘Ahhh’. The album is pleasant to listen to but funnily you don’t feel like humming the tunes (except the first one) afterwards. The lyrics are somewhat insipid.

Ninaithale Inikkum releases on Sep 4
Sun Pictures have started the television campaign of their forthcoming Ninaithale Inikkum, a campus caper from Saturday.
The film directed by Kumaravel has Prithviraj, Priyamani, Karthik Kumar and Sakthi. The music of the film by Vijay Antony was launched in style by Kamal Hassan, a few weeks back The trailer carries the Sun Pictures touch of a racy masala entertainer.
Ninaithale Inikkum, is a remake of one of the finest Malayalam campus films Classmates directed by Lal Jose. Prithviraj had also done the original. Now the Tamil remake version is his big ticket to stardom in Kollywood.
The film will be releasing worldwide on September 4, and should be able to take a good opening, as there is no opposition at the moment.

and thats one of the best roles in 'Classmates'. Jayasurya, as a crooked wannabe politician, nalla pannirupparu. In fact, Malayalathula ellarume nalla nadichiruppanga.
But a movie like Classmates requires lot of changes to make it appeal to Thamizh audiences. For instance, college unions, strikes, protests and links between students and politicians aren't as common in TN as in Kerala.

Hattori, Classmates telugu version was a conk-out precisely because of the reasons you mention. There was a chance to bring in the caste equations and the resultant college politics instead of Union and strikes in Telugu, especially since the Caste equations play a big role in College relationships in AP. But they made a faithful remake, and messed it up.
In TN, I am not sure what can replace Union/Stirkes as a burning issue. Maybe IR-ARR?

LOL
yeah, Student Federations(SFI?), like the one shown in Classmates, don't exist here. But elections were shown well in movies like Sethu.
Also here in TN, esp in Chennai, college culturals, dance shows are more popular than elections & strikes.
BTW, was the Telugu version a flop?

Sakthi bets big on Ninaithale Inikkum
The unassuming young man Sakthi is pinning all hopes on his forthcoming multi-starrer Ninaithale Inikkum, releasing this Friday (Sep 4).
He needs a hit to salvage his career, which is at an all time low following flops like Thottal Poo Malarum and Mahesh Saranya Mattum Palar.
Sakthi has the looks, is talented, hard working and determined to make it to the top. All that he needs is a bit of luck and good role.
In Ninaithale Inikkum, he does the role done by Indrajit
[he is doing the role of Narain ], in the Malayalam original Classmates, which is pivotal role. The buzz is that the young man has stood up to the challenge and scored, pitted against an actor of the caliber of Prithviraj.
His forthcoming films include the action packed Aatanayagan and the romantic comedy Vanjikottu Valiban.

Reliving sweet memories
"There are two kinds of love in the world - intense and casual. My movie will have them both," says debutant director Kumaravel, talking about Ninaithale Inikkum. The movie boasts of an impressive cast that includes Prithviraj, Priyamani, Poi Solla Porom Karthik and Bhagyaraj. "There are two pairs in the movie. One is Prithviraj and Priyamani and the other pair will be revealed in the climax. You can figure this out on the screen," he laughs.
This movie is a remake of the Malayalam hit Classmates. But Kumaravel insists he has made several changes to the script to suit Tamil audiences. “There's no denying that this movie is a remake of Classmates. But 70 per cent of the movie will have a totally new flavour. I have retained just four scenes from the original and the other 56 scenes are completely new
. Those four scenes are crucial for the movie and form the backbone of the script. It's a suspense story… not a thriller, but a movie with loads of twists," he says.
The title Ninaithale Inikkum also happens to be the title of an old Tamil classic, directed by K Balachander. "I thought this title will suit my story best as it is all about flashback and sweet memories," he explains, "After a long time, when college friends get together, they talk about the good ol' days and the fun they had. KB sir was kind enough to let me have the title."
Interestingly, Priyamani and Prithviraj have done at least four movies together. "From what I know, Prithvi and Priya are good friends," asserts Kumaravel, "They were always seen with other people in the set. They didn't sneak out to be alone. So, this rumour about them being romantically involved isn't true. There's a kiss scene in the movie, but not a liplock. And they finished the scene in just one take." And he says Priyamani hasn't worn any revealing dress. "That's because she's a college student. And like a good student, she follows the dress code. There's just one song which features Prithvi and Priya, and that's a folk number," he reveals.
Apart from them, Kumaravel says, "Another surprise package in the movie will be Shakthi and Karthik." More than all that, Kumaravel is happy that his father, veteran director GN Rangarajan, was there with him throughout his experimental film. "My dad was with me throughout, giving me moral support. He's a big director and has done nine films with Kamal sir alone. When Kamal came for the audio launch, he went to meet my dad, who wasn’t keeping well, at the venue. He also liked the movie and said, 'vetriyin sayal theriyudhu pa.' I hope his words come true," he signs off.

The movie was a big flop I guess, going by the fact that they showed the movie on the Malaysian tv-channel last Sunday!

With an evocative and sweet title like Ninaithale Inikkum, one would have thought that the film would have a tangy flavour.
But, strangely the film dilutes the essence of its original Classmates, as it strictly does not follow the thread of a remake.
The director himself has said in interviews that he has changed the basic format of the original by 70 percent and given it a totally new look and feel.
That exactly is the problem with the film as the director GNR Kumaravel is not able to keep the suspense and twists in the narration.
Well, Kumaravel before the film starts makes it clear that his film is “based on the story of James Albert from Classmates”.
The film begins with an young man Shiva (Prithviraj) working in Mumbai, going back to home for a reunion with his old college mates. As the plane is about to land in Chennai he looks out of the window and reminiscences about his college days.
Folks, it is flashback time. Shiva used to study at the National Arts College and used to stay in the college hostel.
For him friendship was above everything in life and had good friends like Sakthi (Sakthi) and Balu. From scene one in college he is at loggerheads with the college bully and rich guy Vasu (Karthik Kumar), as he is jealous about Shiva’s popularity.
Soon Meera (Priyamani), the arrogant daughter of the local MLA, after a few flare-up’s with Shiva slowly falls in love with him, after he saves her from a police lathi-charge in college.
After the college union elections when Meera is forced to contest against Shiva due to the machinations of Vasu, things go awry.
The first half of the film is full of fun, breezy romance, and lighter moments like students bunking in the night for a film and ending up in the company of some transgenders, followed by an item number.
Vijay Antony’s music is just ok, with “Piya Piya..” being the only hummable number. Count Sreekar Prasad’s crisp editing and Balasubramaniem’s camera as the highlights of the film.
Prithviraj does a neat job, he is the pivot around which the film revolves. Shakthi is a revelation and is a natural in a role which is unusual due to the twist in the tale. Karthik Kumar gets a break from his ‘American Maapillai’ roles as he is totally negative as Vasu and is impressive.
Priyamani hardly has a role in the film, it is the other girl (name not revealed by the filmmakers) who is Shakthi’s pair who has the more meaty role.
Bhyagyaraj, Ilavarasu, Manobala have all small roles which they do justice. The film sparkles now and then but does not have a comedy track, which would have made the proceedings livelier.
The best thing of the film is that it is only 2 hours and 10 minutes, which itself is a welcome relief. After watching the film, the question one would like to ask the director is, why go for a remake of Classmates, which has too much Malayalam campus politics and nativity?
He could have gone for a non- complicated campus caper with more nostalgia and Tamil milieu, which would have worked wonders.
Verdict - Average

Ninaithale Inikkum is worth a watch
If you can ignore the melodrama, the (sometimes) cliched dialogues and item numbers, then this one is actually a decent movie. The Tamil version doesn't exactly pull at your heart-strings like the Malayalam version seems to have done -- but it at least has a plot with all the loose ends tied up. What more do you want?

Read this only if you have no problems with spoilers.
I finally watched the movie last weekend. Truly disappointed. But that’s probably because I’ve watched the original version prior to this. Hearing the news about the remake of Classmates in Tamil, one would expect the director to take the effort to knot up all the loose ends found in the original. Unfortunately, that was not so in this case. In fact, the vital elements in the original were totally missing in the remake, which end up making the whole plot (of Sakthi’s death) seem unbelievable.
In most thriller-based film, you often find the Director persisting to sustain the suspense in the film. But for some reasons, I felt that Dir. Kumarvelu is more interested in whisking the audience straight to the climax scene. So much so, you wouldn’t even have the time to feel the thrill of suspense behind Sakthi’s death. Within minutes, you know what and who’s the cause of his death. Probably if Kumaravelu had stick to the original version (whereby the movie starts with students returning for a reunion in remembrance of their late friend, and the story folds in flashbacks thereafter), then the whole movie would have been intriguing.
Both Prithvi and Priyamani were just so-so. The director wanted to depict them as rivals in the first half before falling in love with each other in the later half. But why and how the rivalry occur in the first place seem unanswered. To start with, throughout the first half, there was only a small tiff between them on the protest for the hostel food but otherwise you hardly see them crossing each other’s path. Even the love portion passes by without pulling your heartstring. The love scenes (where Priyamani request for a kiss from Pritvi and the scene where she says that she’s ready to leave her parents if he’s willing to marry her) were all clichéd and done without any emotions. In fact, Sakthi and Anuja Iyer’s short love scene( in the Azhagai Pookuthey song) evokes more emotions than the former.
Karthik Kumar hardly has scope to perform. The cunningness and arrogance in Jayasuriya is totally missing in him and he was just shown as another rich brat throughout the film. Sakthi was surprisingly good and Anuja, despite having the least acting-experience among the whole lot, seems to be totally at ease with her character.
In total, Ninaithale Innikum had the prospect of being a really good film… if only the Director had concentrated more on the script and less attention in turning the film into another masala film.
