Ace director Selvaraghavan, after applying for divorce with actress wife Sonia Aggarwal, is starting his new film with muse Andrea and brother Dhanush. He is reviving his pet project
Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam (IMNM), a film which he was to start with Karthi and Sandhya in the lead in 2006 for his production house, a joint venture with his then cameraman Aravind Krishna and music director Yuvan Shankar Raja. But the project never took off, as Selva and Karthi got involved in Aayirathil Oruvan. Two years later, on November 7, 2008, the film was revived by Selvaraghavan when a photo shoot with Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah took place. However, a few weeks later, Andrea, in an interview to a newspaper, said that “the project has been shelved since the film’s director, Selvaraghavan, has other commitments.”
Now, the grapevine is abuzz that IMNM has once again been revived with Dhanush and Andrea in the lead. The film will be produced under a new banner floated by Selva and the shoot will start on August 20 in Hyderabad. However, sources say the title has not been confirmed. Selva’s Aayirathil Oruvan cameraman Ramji will be the cinematographer, while the rumour mills have it that Yuvan Shankar Raja will provide the music. Dhanush, who openly says he owes everything to ‘Selva anna’, has gone out of his way to give priority ‘Tatkal dates’ to his brother.
IMNM is said to be an ‘intense romantic film about generation next’, and is a script which Selva had written a few years back. The film is to be made quickly in 50 days, and will be script-driven. A source close to the director said, “It is a throwback to Selva’s earlier films like Kadhal Kondein and 7G Rainbow Colony and will bring out the restlessness of today’s youth and their romantic liaisons. It will definitely have an autobiographical streak.”
The film is likely to make it to the screens for Valentine’s Day, 2010.

Today, August 20th ace director Selvaraghavan and his brother actor Dhanush are starting their new film Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam (title may change) in Chennai.
The film, which is Selva’s pet project, was supposed to start in 2006 with Karthi and Sandhya in the lead but due to certain reasons, was shelved.
Once again the project got revived in 2008 with Dhanush and Andrea in the lead and even a photoshoot was held.
But once again it was kept on the backburner and the director got busy with his action adventure Aayirathil Oruvan .
And now the big news is that the film will start rolling today as Dhanush has given tatkal dates to Selva who will be producing the film himself.
Ramji will be the cinematographer and GV Prakash Kumar is the music director. The film is to be made as a quickie in 50 days, and will be script driven.

‘Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’ the close-to-heart project of Selvaraghavan was supposed to start in the year 2006. The film was supposed to star Karthi and Sandhya in the lead but due to certain reasons, was shelved. And now the director has dusted the project out of his reserve and has placed it on track with his dear bro Dhanush in the lead.
It can also be recalled that the project got revived in the year 2008 by means of a photo-shoot with Dhanush and Andrea as the lead pair. Sadly the movie was shelved till now as the director was busy with his action-adventure ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ with Karthi, Andrea and Reema Sen in the lead.
At last, ‘Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’ is active again and will be a quickie. Sources say that Dhanush has given a short span of his time and the film will be shot in just 50 days! Plus, the film will be produced by Selvaraghavan himself.
A birdie says Selvaraghavan and music director GV Prakash will be flying down to Amsterdam and Netherlands soon to compose the musical scores, wherein one song has been composed already. The other cast and crew of ‘Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’ will be announced formally in a short while.

GV Prakash Kumar is on a roll. The young music director is a busy bee with half a dozen films in his kitty.

If any director says his story to a hero as, 'In this film, you are married and you have a four years old son" , then not even a new hero accepts to act in that movie. This is Tamil cinema's heroism now-a-days.
But there are also some heroes who likes to act in a different role, like Dhanush. Yes ofcourse, he looks like a school boy , but now he accepted to act in a Father role. He is really different from others and he is ready to act as father of two babies.
It has become long time gap, for both brothers Selvaraghavan and Dhanush to work together.In the mid time , they decided to work together in the film 'Idhu maalai nerathu mayakkam' but that film was dropped due to some reasons. Now they are joining hands in this movie.
In this film ,Dhanush will be acting as a father of two babies. The film will have a heroine but there is no pair for Dhanush.
Now Dhanush is busy in his movies with Mithran, Jawahar, Suraj , Vetrimaran. After the release of 'Aayirathil oruvan',a Telungu film and a Hindi film are in hands of Selvaraghavan. After both getting free, this film will get start.

Vikram gets Selvaraghavan to shelve MNM

While there were strong speculations that Vikram would first don the greasepaint for Vikram Kumar’s venture and then move on to Selvaraghavan’s project, it now looks like Vikram and Selvaraghavan could team up first. There are also reports of director Selvaraghavan shelving his Malai Nerathu Mayakkam (MNM) to accommodate Vikram.
The actor, in all likelihood, will complete Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and will move on to this yet-to-be named venture that is to be produced by Kanakaratna Films. Shooting is expected to kick start later this month and move on to various locations including Ladakh and Mumbai.

At the time of the launch GV Prakash was the music director, but now Yuvan Shankar Raja has replaced him.

UTV Motion pictures, Mumbai based media and entertainment production company
, has acquired the distribution rights of Selvaraghavan's Erandam Ulagam. But the amount paid for the rights is yet to be revealed.

The principal photography of Erandam Ulagam was started in 2006 on Karthi and Sandhya. But the movie was called off due to some reasons. The movie took off again in 2008 with Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah in lead roles. But again it was shelved. Finally, in June 2010 Selva decided to complete the project and started filming with the same cast.
Now, the director has roped in Yuvan Shankar Raja to score the music and the movie is produced by K. Vimalgeetha.

Selvaraghavan, who has vowed to complete his Erandam Ulagam before starting his proposed film Vishwaroobham, is filming his long-pending project in a brisk pace. The director is putting his best efforts to finish off the shooting by this month end.
If sources are to be believed, Selvaraghavan is desperate to complete the shooting schedules before his marriage, which is expected to be in mid-June. Currently, he is shooting the film in Kerala with Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah. The director has decided to launch the audio of the film by June end and planned to release the film in July first week.
It may be recalled that Erandam Ulagam was announced in 2006 with Karthi and Sandhya. After starting its first schedule, the movie was dropped to some unknown reasons. The movie took off again in 2008 with Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah in lead roles. But again it was shelved. Finally, in June 2010 Selva decided to complete the project and started filming with the same cast.

Selvaraghavan is busily directing the movie “Irandam Ulagam”. Selvaraghavan’s Brother Dhanush is the Hero of this movie and Selvaraghavan’s closest friend Andrea was fixed as the Heroine.
Selvaraghavan became very close with Andrea during the Shooting of the film “Aayirathil Oruvan”. Andrea felt that, this closeness with Selvaraghavan would continue the same way and accepted to act in the film “Irandam Ulagam” also. We are used to see the twists and turns in the film’s Stories. But, Selva seems to give twist and turn in real also.

'Naan Sonnadhum Mazhaivandhucha...' is penned by the megaphone wielder Selvaraghavan and is crooned by Naresh Iyer.
'Pirai Thedum...' is one special track as it is sung by GV Prakash along with his fianc�e Saindhavi.
'Oda Oda Dhooram Korayala...' is penned and crooned by multi-faceted Dhanush.
'Ennena Seidhom Ingu...' is penned by Dhanush again and crooned by Harish Raghavendra.
'Kadhal En Kadhal...' is another special track as it is crooned by starlet brothers, Selvaraghavan and Dhanush.
The final one is the Theme music of 'Mayakkam Enna', it may be mentioned all of Selva's films' theme music become a rage among the masses, and expectations on this tune is soaring high.
'Mayakkam Enna' has Dhanush and Richa Gangopadhyay in the lead roles with Sunder Ramu playing second lead. Cinematography is by T Ramii, editing is by Kola Bhaskar and art direction is handled by Kiran. The film is produced by Aum Productions.

The film with the title Irandam Ulagam will start rolling by end of November. Sources close to Anushka told sify.com: “ Yes Anushka has signed Selvaraghavan film. She loved the script and her role in the film.”
Now what happens to the news doing the rounds that she will be doing the Kamal Haasan project Viswaroopam?
Says the source: “How many films can Anushka do? She is already doing two Telugu films and has also agreed to do a project with Karthi next year. So where are the dates? It would have been a great opportunity to work with Kamal sir though Sweety is still trying to work out the dates”.
When contacted, Selvarghavan who is busy with the post production work of Mayakkam Enna was not available for comment.
However sify understands that he is using the same script of Irandam Ulagam for which he shot for a couple of days with Dhanush and Andrea before keeping it in the backburner and starting Mayakkam Enna!

The audio of Aum Productions Selvaraghavan directed Dhanush- Richa starrer Mayakkam Enna was launched today (19 Sep) at Radio Mirchi FM station.
Selva, GV Prakash, Dhanush, Richa, Sundar and Gitanjali Selvaraghavan were present on the occasion.
Mayakkam Enna is Gemini Audio’s first foray into film music.

Overall a very refreshing album from GVP
Voda voda/naan sonnadum is fun song..addicted to it
Kathal solla - nevef heard such a refreshing love failure song in recent times gona be the anthem for youngsters who have been dumped by their gfs..

The camera shutter kind of sound in Oda oda sounds so good! GVP has used it really well A song to LOL, after Devan Ekambaram's track last year. (Seriously, don't remember the track and the movie

However, my pick is Pirai thedum! Saindhavi could have certainly sung it better. But still, i'm in love with this song! That sparingly used 'unakkena vaazhum' lines, is superb!
Ennenna seidhom - Has good lyrical value! A better tune could have made it superb. Now, listening to it for the lyrics!
Matha songs ellam one time thaan ketten. Not very impressed. Even theme music doesn't stand out! Will try it later!
Overall, certainly not up to the standard of Selva. Quite a disappointment!
I expected a mind-blowing album!

Even Kan pesum vaarthaigal is alleged to be a rework of ARR's DSKR Chal Keva re keva.. Listen to the rest and tell me if it's worth any comparison.
Let me add a few g here Imagine ravikrishna singing two songs Atleast I am glad they dare to try something different.
I am not a fan of either these combo's but this comparison and defaming ME or GVP with 7g is not worth any merits.

Yuvan's songs have always been more popular than GVPs. Selva's best albums have been with Yuvan. Not that AO and ME are bad, but 7G and PP were superior and more popular.
If i am not wrong, AO was a flop and none of its songs, apart from un mela aasaithaan, were big hits.
Only Aadukalam was GVP's genuine hit.

IMO, U1 is way better than GVP and we had a similar kinda discussion sometime back IIRC. Problem with U1 is that he accepts too many bad movies and that really takes the gloss off the good work he does. Somehow, GVP has never managed to impress except for a few one off hits.

Actually, actually, enaku andha ambani parambari was likeable. And I don't take to kuththu songs much - even IR's for that matter(not that I am placing this above IR's kuththu songs just saying my general trend). Even saaman nikaalovum pudichudhu. I think there is something about Yuvan's adis which lend a little class to such kuththu songs. I can't place my fingers where...(Chee, thappaa padikka koodadhu )

I watched the movie on the 3rd day of its release in Inox. In fact, Maddy booked the ticket for me. The whole crowd went berzerk during Ajith introduction, bike stunt, chess board scene, Jeyaprakash road bounce scene, etc. But not a single soul danced or even clapped for the songs. I guess men stayed inside becoz Inox has banned smoking in the premises. I still feel that songs were a letdown for a racy movie like Mankatha. Take out the songs, the movie would be even better.

GVP's simple and catchy melodies were composed for the correct movies that clicked well at BO and naturally songs became huge hits! Deserved hits! I know, how much I expected from the album Narthagi. I was so eagerly waiting for it only to get disappointed. It was indeed a movie where GVP had scope but failed miserably!

Finally!Selvaraghavan’s eagerly awaited Mayakkam Enna, which was supposed to be released on December 2, has been advanced by a week.
The film has been censored with an UA certificate and is now confirmed to release on November 25.
One of the producers of the film Gitanjali Selva said : “ Mayakkam Enna will hit theatres on Nov 25. A film that means the world to me. Something straight from the heart.”

“It's ready and we are coming out on November 25,” he smiles. But you had media reports stating that the film will roll out early December? “I heard about it too. We made the announcement a couple of days ago and, till then, I had said nothing about the date of release,” he sounds puzzled. He appears quite cheerful, as we continue talking about Mayakkam Enna.
So does he really feel relaxed now that the last-minute frenzy of tying up loose ends, trips to the Censors and the like are over? “Far from it,” he smiles. “Do I sound angst-free? The tension is mounting. I've directed eight films so far and during every release I lose 15 kg,” he laughs.
This time it looks as though he's going back to what he's been successful at — love tangles.Kaadhal Kondaen and 7G Rainbow Colony showed Selva's adeptness at spinning romantic yarns that go down well with the film-going youth here. “No,” you're wrong,” he laughs. “This isn't a love story. It's a warm film and more than 70 per cent of ME is humorous.” Levity has never found much space in Selvaraghavan's narration. “Of course, I don't allow fun tracks to run riot in my films. In ME too comedy is woven into the script. I'm sure Dhanush's humour takes will tickle.” In the same vein he hastens to clarify that Mayakkam Enna cannot be categorised as a comedy. “It's light-hearted and probably a little heavy-hearted,” he jokes rather cryptically. “Frankly, I don't think you can slot it in a genre. All the same, ME is way different from the kind of films I've done so far.”
Mayakkam Enna is Selva's fourth film with his brother, Dhanush. In a way each has been lucky for the other.Thulluvadho Ilamai placed them on the ladder to fame and Kaadhal Kondaen helped them ascend the rungs with ease.Pudhupettai met with mixed response, yet it didn't undermine the popularity of the combo. Naturally, when the brothers join hands after quite a while, curiosity is kindled.
Dhanush has come a long way since the days of Pudhupettai, so was he game for a quickie this time? “We decided to work together again. He had the dates. I had the script. We worked on it and ME happened.”
That Selvaraghavan and Dhanush have doubled as lyricists forMayakkam Enna and between the two have penned all the six songs is a surprise. “Dhanush has always been writing verses. So have I. We were pressed for time as we had to leave for the shoot and thought we'd do it ourselves. And working with G.V. Prakash is cool. We vibe well,” he informs.
Composer Prakash stepped in during the making of Aayirathil Oruvan, after the till-then close duo of Selva and Yuvan Shankar Raja parted ways. Again Ramji, the camera person of Aayirathil Oruvan, is on board. “Ramji is like a bro. Our comfort level makes work enjoyable. And his diligence is incredible. The same goes for G.V. Prakash. Comparatively, I am the one who takes things easy,” he says. “Naturally, I prefer to go with workaholics like them.”
Is he confident about the result of the cumulative effort? “I've watched ME a million times and I like what I've watched. But the impact it is going to create on the audience when they see it fresh isn't easy for me to calculate. The verdict rests with viewers and I anxiously wait for them to pass it in my favour,” he says.
Heroine Richa is a new find. “After watching her in the Telugu film,Leader, I cast her in my Telugu project opposite Rana. But the film didn't take off and I moved on to ME. It was then that Gitanjali, my wife, reminded me of her,” says Selvaraghavan. “Richa has proved to be the right choice.”
And that takes us to his newly wedded status. “Gitanjali handles the production. From the morning idlis for the unit to the costly equipment needed for the shoot we had to go to her. Life is wonderful and peaceful. Earlier it was a war zone, now it is bliss,” he laughs

I myself do not know what genre the film falls into. It is not a love story; still it is a feel good and warm film.
The promos of the film make it look like it is another love tangle like some of your earlier films like Kadhal Kondein and 7G Rainbow Colony.
I believe in never repeating myself. Mayakkam Enna is fresh and innovative. I always like to push the frontiers.
So it is a different type of cinema.
It is very much seeped in the commercial format of storytelling with songs, comedy and action. There is no escape from the rules of the game.
In one way you say ME is different at the same time you say it is a commercial movie.
I’m not making the kind of films that I want to, when I started out as a filmmaker. I would love to make a film like The Girl in Yellow Boots but are constrained by commercial consideration.
How has ME shaped out?
I have watched it over 100 times and loved it. But what counts is the impact that it will have over the audiences. I’m waiting for their reaction more thananything else.

How comfortable is working with Dhanush?
It is my fourth film with him and always we have clicked as a team. He has done a difficult role extremely well, but would like the public to talk about his performance than me.

I was impressed with Richa after seeing her Telugu film Leader and had signedher up to do a film with Rana Dagubatti. It was then that Gitanjali my wife who said that she would be apt for ME, and she has been proved right. My favourite cameraman Ramji has made each shot look good on screen. GV Prakash’s music has already been appreciated and topping the charts.
What type of movies do you like to make?
I love the alternative cinema of Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Bhardwaj. I do not have the guts to make films like them. I’m forced due to financial constraints to make films which work at the box-office. So I try to take a middle path of making films that keep my company going at the same time gives me aesthetic satisfaction.

"Mayakkam Enna", or its English translation, "What Is This Dizziness", is an upcoming Tamil romantic drama film directed by Selvaraghavan. It stars his brother Dhanush, as a photographer along with Richa Gangopadhyay, whose character he falls in love with, and boasts a soundtrack scored by G. V. Prakash Kumar and cinematography by Ramji.

A quick review before I go to sleep...
Shock 1: Massive crowd for a mid-week movie
Shock 2: Danush has earned good fan support with whistles and claps, throughout the movie
First half: A little slow
Second half: Where almost all the actions take place
Full Marks given to
1. Danush - what an amazing performance
2. Cinematographer - awesome
3. GV Prakash - exceptional BGM and lovely songs
4. Richa - very good performance - from one extreme to another
5. Selvaragavan shocking us now and then
I don't know whether it will be a great hit as the anti-feminist thingy runs throughout the movie and family crowd may hesistate.
But youths will swallow wholesale
Story: Forbidden love... and some more
But to call it a love story is gross injustice... there is a sub-plot running thru the movie.
Shock treatment is good, with Selva not wasting time swelling over things.
VERDICT: I Love the movie yaa, complete with Selvaragahavan's eccentricities. Definitely not a one-time watch movie

Movie was good except some parts in second half were Selva shows his psycho characteristics. I mentioned "his" because this is something which you can see in all of his movies. I dont think Selva can make a movie without vulgar, awkward scenes/dialogues. One thing to applaud is the positive ending (Mrs. Selva's influence?).
Really good performance by Dhanush. Richa was also good. Background music was excellent.
Mayakkam enna - Watch it for Dhanush.

The story of ‘Mayakkam Enna’ goes this way…
Bounded to his dreams of making a big time in wildlife photography, Karthik Swaminathan doesn’t miss to click pictures on anything he finds. National Geographic, Discovery and Traveler’s Magazine and more international magazines becomes his central attraction. However, he is rejected by everyone in town and is broken down when a leading wildlife photographer cheats him winning credits for his work. He comes across Yamini (Richa Gangopadhyay), a girl dating his friend Sundar (Sundar). But she falls in love with Karthik and indeed marry that almost becomes a happy ending. But nothing goes well as dreamt as Karthik is shattered to witness his very own credited under leading photographer’s byline with international recognition. He even attempts to suicide and is saved by his wife and friends. Off the late, his criteria go out of focus and he starts behaving peculiarly. However, it’s his wife Yamini making sure that her spouse makes his dream accomplished.
Selvaraghavan’s distinctive style of narration becomes the major asset in all his films. This one doesn’t go as an exception. The story begins somewhere and while you would make predictions, the story takes an intense turn. Well, Selvaraghavan had made a statement that ‘Mayakkam Enna’ isn’t a love story, but the search of a youngster beyond usual paradigms and indeed mentioned the value of women has been emphasized here. In fact, Richa Gangopadhyay gets more importance to her characterization. First half of the film goes around at middling rate revolving around youthful quotients. Post-intermission, the sequences are very well crafted with an intense care. Maybe some of the portions are little sluggish, but it cannot be judged as something ‘unwanted’ as the narration deserves such treatment.
There are some brilliant and daring scenes that would leave anyone go frizzled in their nerves. Say for instance, Richa Gangopadhyay wiping off her bloodstain dried on the floors is literally shocking. In the same manner, her gesture towards her friend, who asks to leave her insane husband marrying him and another sequence about bashing upon the neighbors, is a cherry-pick of her best performance. Dhanush emotes starkly to the characterization and his emotional outburst during the situation where he is chiseled on his work is magnificent.
G.V. Prakash’s songs suit to the situations and have been pictured well. ‘Kadhal En Kadhal’ is pictured completely in Selvaraghavan’s style while ‘Voda Voda’ is a creative work. ‘Pirai Thedum’ is set in emotional ambience. Moreover, the background score appeals to the audiences’ interest for even the visuals that lack dialogues and just goes with expressions and reactions gain more intensity.
On the whole, ‘Mayakkam Enna’ belongs to the genre of ‘Drama’ with the touch of Selvaraghavan’s cut. It’s quite a different film from the director’s works. The results can go positive with the word of mouth promotions.

Very kood movie (liked the 2nd half more)..Except for the cheesy stuff in the first half here and there.. Dhanush .. and much much better from selvaraghavan.. Finally a movie where there is some continuity and no abrupt twists and changes from the first and 2nd half.

ME - First non-irritating film from Selva. Nadula konjam elliptical-a ponnalum paravala.
Dhanush 75% alumoonjiya kaamichu nadichirukkApla, aana bore adikkala. Silar madhiri irritate'lam pannala. It might surprise some people, but this is his first good performance in a Selva philum. Consistently in line with the character. Early films had D turning a bit erratic. But inga erratic-a pOra role'la nalla panni irukkap'la. Psychological nuance'lam edhir paakka mudiyadhu. Part of the fault is the way Selva lets the narrative unfold uninterrupted.
Enna dream aesthetic-nu solranganu purila. EllamE straight forward-a thaanE irunchu. The medium/long shots of him taking photographs is Selva's portrayal of a wildlife fotographer's awkwardness with people & mundanity of life vis-a-vis the relaxed moments with his camera (slow-mo works brilliantly with the extremely photograph friendly face profile of Dhanush. As BM once said in Neeya-naana , he has a truly picturesque face that has the potential of a successful worldwide crossover. I'd say it again, he's the Indian Lee Byung-hun. This also makes sense with 'Kolaveri di' crossing barriers. Wish he gets his Kim Ji-woon).
Simple storytelling. Could have heightened the drama, but he let's it be mundane at times.

Saw the film. Quite good. Selvaraghavan has never disappointed me. I even liked his flop movie Pudhupettai
However, as someone said, it is not as impactful as 7G or Pudhupettai. But again, as someone said, never a boring moment, apart from maybe during the songs.
Voda voda was the only enjoyable song. Even the picturisation was good. I don't know why kaathal yen kaathal song was used. Its lyrics mean't love failure but there was no love failure in the film.
Dhanush pathi sollave thevai illa. Brilliant.
BGM sounded good. But i thought there was overusage of music. Thevai illaatha scenes ku ellaam loud BGM kuduthirukaar.

Hi frnds... Here in Singapore me and my friends watched ME... Actualla sollanuna, this is the first time I am walking out of selvas movie thinking that I liked every bit of it... Dhanush chanceilla semma acting! Good dose of entertainment and story and the biggest plus IMO is the direction (of course screenplay was good.) Dhanush dance was nice and for this type of movie keeping it under 3hrs is a good challenge won by selva! Ooda ooda song and kaadhal yen kaadhal songs super-o-super... However some scenes are dragging but overall I liked it and everyone who came out of theatre were very happy... IMO this beats aadukalam in terms of performance and story... And no I am not Dhanush fan (actually na vijay fan) but yet i am telling dhanush deserves this hit! Well done

Agreed completely on doing more than it should have. But I suppose they used the scissors to keep it short? Light jump therinjuchu illa? Ultimately it does feel convenient of Selva to let the audience make up how they make do. But the fact that the betrayal aspect was played down & that people get over it easily, was refreshing. A farcry from the usual mechanics of TFI.
The demarcation of Yamini-Karthik as a choice as against one of the other guys exploiting the state of Yamini (in the car). And her cutting it short & refusing to chastise him completely.
Needed something more (in way of a exchange, of thoughts in words) to grapple that Sunder made sense of the fact that they have not much spark, & Y-K have more of a chemistry.

Why go that far? As if the judgment and contempt she receives from the audience (and why us it that the audience have come to expect that in Selva movies?) and D is not enough, she has to do something extraordinary to stay in the consideration - put up patiently all the while, defend him strongly etc... The violence is just the icing on the cake. And do note the attire, seriously the dudes need to check that off before they give their approval (after the violence of course, as you point out)
And isn't "love" in his films (the male) something that starts as an obsession sans respect? His female characters do get shown as strong and the needful is done in the end but I would like to see this pattern changed in his future workd

Agreed. It does feel wronged. But the whole feminism/misogyneacologist (pun intended) is the easiest form of criticism, but quite pertinent admittedly. What if the film really wants to show a flawed man? It certainly deserves better writing AND better direction, for one thing.
If the idea is to hold a strong male gaze. How do you avoid being framed? What autonomy do you enjoy as a filmmaker? Kubrick's films get framed misogynist by every yahoo. Even though he packs in a strong, moment of defiance that puts to shame the male bravado. Be it the snipper at end of FMJ or Mrs Kubrick at end of Paths of Glory. Or continual underpinnings of a man's vulnerability. Be it Cruise w.r.t Kidman. Or Barry w.r.t Lady Lyndon. And yet even he gets charged.

CG was worse @ a shot where a animated bird opens its wing.
Worst set work & looked artificial in climax award function.
GVP background music- he need to learn more, we can see him all the way where he is not needed.

Dhanush as Karthik Swaminathan the aspiring Photographer has lived his role and his acting was so matured. Richa Gangopadhyay as Yamini strikes with her acting skills in her first venture itself.
GV Prakash Kumar's Bgm is the main soul of the film, so as Ramji's outstanding Cinematography. Above all there is the creator Selvaraghavan the director of Mayakkam Enna, He just pulls the pain out of the audience who watch the film and leave them with tears.
Mayakkam Enna is not a time pass movie, there are many social elements and messages added in the film. The film moves at a slow pace, but it's worth spending ur time. Mayakkam Enna a film for everyone who aspires in their life to become an inspiration for others.

Selva for giving a superb role to Richa..Selva/Gautham/Murugudas naan romba respect pannuven because they give importance to heroines..I want to see Vijay/Ajit doing the same in the future..If they cant, just dont need to have a heroine just for the sake of dancing etc..

Mahen, Everybody are entitled to say their view. Just because some group of people liked this movie (include me) doesn't mean everybody should like it and if they didn't like doesn't mean something wrong with them. Critics praised movies like Vaagai sooda vaa, Azhagar samiyin kuthirai but you know what happened to their box office results. As for Dhanush sharing credits, walked in late so did not catch the credits and the first few mins. Later caught that on youtube and don't think Dhanush was credited, except this dialogue before the film's title appeared - "Idhu en kadhai"
Caught an intree of Selva yesterday on Jaya and he said Dhanush wrote the first half and he wrote the 2nd. And on one of his tweets Selva has said, Dhanush actually *composed* kaadhal en kaadhal. Multi talented phlow. Nextu kamalahaasan for sure

A Selvaraghavan film has once again opened in the number one position.
Mayakkam Enna, the Dhanush starrer, in spite of torrential rains in Chennai has taken a jaw dropping 90% opening, thanks to the solid advance booking in city screens.
It has grossed from 21 screens a whopping Rs 97 lakhs, giving it a fantastic opening. The youth and family audiences seem to have lapped up the film.
The rains have ruined all other earlier releases. At the number two is 7aum Arivu, due to sustained publicity campaign and number of screens.
Velayudham is in the third position. At number four is The Adventures of Tintin, which is getting family audiences due to its excellent making. And in the fifth position is Vithagan.... next weeek meet pannuren TM

Watched ME today... Over all a very good movie.
* Richa was excellent (mudhal padam maadhiri illai... I know she has acted in aTelugu movie). The sequnces after she returns from hospital wiping the floor... chance-E illai. No other actor has blown me away recently like Richa. Hope our heroes like her.
* Dhanush was good... especially the drinking scene after hitting the bridegroom. nalla improvement from his earlier movies. I was looking for "Show me a damn pose" from the trailer.... inga cut-ing pannittaangaLa-nu theriyalai.
* Sundar and his dad were natural. Dhanush & Sundar's patch episode was nice.
* Hero Heroine falling in love is typical selva matter.
* Awesome Photography (Ramji & whoever took those wildlife pics)
* Background score at times vERa edhO oru patta remind panRaaplayE irundhuchchu... Not sure where I felt and which song it is.
Did I see Mrs Selva making a quick appearance in the movie? The girl who takes Dhanush into Ravi Prasad's home, I think, is Geetanjali.

Very nice movie. Loved many scenes. Hats off to the Cinematographer/Director of Photography(?) and the director himself. Loved the way they showed the contrast between the beauty of the nature with the ugliness of human. In my view point anyway. Dhanush, never lets me down. The heroin was pretty good here and there but mostly just there. Where she got angry at Dhanush. I was right with her. Overall a nice movie. Would watch it again given the time.

The slo-mo shots of the bird perching the tree anticipating Dhanush's trance + soul melting with that apt theme music in the background is one of the few reedeming moments of the film. First half is really brilliant.Usual selva touches.Liked almost all the scenes from the first half.Second half is little bit draggy but engaging.Performance wise,both danush and richa is very good.Particularly danush is so realistic and a big thumbs up for his facial expressions. GVP is going many steps ahead with every movie.
Stand out scenes
Bus stand scene
Richa wiping off her blood strains and showing her anger,inability just through expressions
Climax-a shocker from selva but done exceedingly well
Scenes that could have been better
Many scenes in the second half like abortion scene which was very lengthy
kumudam magazine scene
At the end,it resembled like a vikraman movie
whether danush got cured from mental problems was not clearly shown
This is a selva movie which has both positives and negatives in an equal proportion. But despite of everything, It leaves a big impact to the audience at the end....Don't think it will be a hit at box office but worth watching...

When one attacks a contemporary favorite, it's imperative that people get defensive & start to bring in other established names (with you or Nov, it's always going to be KH or IR), so as to diffuse the magnitude of the charge. Pulling the Cotton Wool over my callous eyes doesn't actually mean the charge isn't true enough.
I still maintain that GVP should lighten up. Bigger names have let tabloid reviewers (unless you think SK holds a huge say to their business) make their charge and chose to steer clear. This boy is so guilty that itwofs ran out of database.

Mayakkam Enna? - Loved the movie! Dhanush is in great form, brilliant and perfect. Climax looked bit ordinary <not the final scene though>, You should not go with a gang for this picture, one or two in the crowd can spoil the whole show. I went with one of my friend, he too liked it because we didn even speak as the movie was progressing. There are lot of things happening in each and every frame. Planning to revisit soon... Richa ... Liked her very much especially in the second half.

The look that Dhanush gives Richa after the wedding, during his drinking session was rivetting. Dhanush is going somewhere for sure, the potential this bugger has is immense and the HITS he gets from time to time are the comforting factors to that Potential to reach greater heights. Let it be a movie or a even a single song or even a single scene, I don't know if luck is favoring him but such boosts will really make this man attain feats many can just dream about. But for that he has to keep his legs on the ground and his head on his shoulder. I am putting my chips on Dhanush.
ME definitely needs more than a single viewing to enjoy it properly. I am watching it again, tonight.

BGM as a standalone pieces might work well, but the overt dissonance at many places were felt. Is it also the fact that we're exposed to so much crap that something relatively decent gets overblown? Forget copying or lifting (That's a different issue), is this work even half as good as say Aaranya Kaandam (Which might also have its 'inspirations') Yuvan's work registers more deeply. Be it for Sappai, be it Kodukapali, or Pasupathy. OTOH, despite the interventions of the flutes in ME, it's still ornated & overcooked. There's no sense of harmony between the aural-visuals. Don't let mediocrity win over you.

Watched the movie...
Liked it for the simple & natural presentation, photogenic locations. Loved dhanush's performance, he fit the role perfectly... Richa's expressive eyes, and her lip synchronization matched with deepa venkat's voice..
Loved the songs, thank god didn't jump to foreign locations..

Mayakkam Enna – Movie Review
Its one of those movies which is a must watch. Selvaraghavan has returned with his true form, solid story and his favorite hero in Mayakkam Enna. The movie has well defined characters, excellent screen play and beautiful music.
Karthik(Danush) is a freelance photographer who wants to become like his idol Madesh who is a award winning wildlife photographer. Karthik has a close set of friends Sunder, Shankar, Padmini and Vindhya. They are supportive of Karthik and call him Genius. One day, Sundar comes with Yamini (Richa), his girlfriend.
Though initially Karthik and Yamini start off on a wrong foot, they are attracted to each other. Sunder’s father when he learns of this convinces sunder and other friends, gets Karthik and Yamini married.
Karthik desperately wants to join Madesh as a assistant and gives him a set of wildlife photographs to consider. Madesh plagarises one of Karthik;s photo and wins award. Karthik is unable to bear the betrayal and goes into a depression.
The rest of the story is about strong belief of Yamini that her husband is a genius and how she is supportive and strives to make him successful.
The movie has a balanced mix of friendship, romance, betrayal and sacrifice. Danush is outstanding in his performance and gives a award winning performance. Even though its a debut Tamil movie for Richa, she has immense potential and gives a performance on par with Danush. GV prakash music is excellent and his back ground score adds immense depth to some of the silent scenes.

The tribal dance version which was actually not in sync with the movie wasn't that bad. The way it begins with the old guy singing and then Dhanush singing was very Tamil-filmish which I personally liked a lot. But it was a bit confusing. Already watched ME twice in theater thinking if I shud go again for the song.

Finally watched it on TV.
Dhanush is good, though he seemed to be the same the last few films I have seen (that I get from Jiiva too). Richa, fine, at times, almost wooden. Nice script, sometimes very clever, like the time when Dhanush glances over the bed to see only one side is slept on. Anti-Mugavari climax that I liked fine. In fact, I would have Dhanush give up the prize to Madhesh whose pilfering actually proved that the pix were awesome. Do a Brando.
As usual, they have to have music all over the place and songs Stop overrating these composers, start playing with silence guys, please...
