No idea about audience response. It will take a day or two for websites to publish the collections. But critics are'nt too happy with it. they were'nt happy with the tamil version too but it clicked with the masses. Lets see if bollywood junta proves the critics wrong.

frm orkut
just back from the movie
7 PM show, Sion Cinemax. Mumbai
Positives:
1) movie is too good. except for a couple of places u dont realise it is a dubbed version (yes, it is. maybe only aandavar used his own voice but for others voices definitely dubbing was used, but they were very natural)
2) aandavar!!!!!! kaalil thaan vizhaNum. the way he speaks like a 90+ old granny with the hindi in the UP accent was wonderful. sadly it was so wonderful that nobody even realised the hard work and the pain. just like sehwag makes hitting 300s look ridiculously simple in contrast to dravid who makes scoring 100s look very painstaking.
negatives:
1) missed the first 20 mins, hence missed the nambi portions altogether.
2) the movie was shown in a small screen with around 50 seats capacity. half the seats were empty. this was for the evening show in a pretty well known multiplex that too quite close to mathunga. i think in other places the situation can be no better.
3) most of the 20-25 people were south indians, may be KH admirers. may be only 3-5 people were proper north indians.
4) no publicity anywhere. whaterver little on the net which is available have reviewed the movie in the most ridiculous manner.
5) at the introduction scene of Shingen, the title reads "Tokyo, Japan" in tamil. there is no hindi subtitles for shingen's japanese dialogues.
Verdict:
Unless the publicity is hiked up immediately, the movie may not see the second weekend in most theaters.
Yes, the common multiplex audience will definitely love it, if proper publicity is made. The movie has everything in it in the right proportions. It is even better than the tamil version. I loved it.

another rev..
just back frm the show..... watched it in big cinemas, mulund......
me, roshan(smart boy) and 3 of my colleague(mumbaikars) went for the movie.....
the reaction frm them was, movie is jet speed till interval...... and then they started feeling unrest in the second half during poovaraghavan and kalifullaah episode......
overall, they said, movie is ok.....timepass..... but little lengthy.....
theatre was filled around 30% capacity..... cud hear lots of laughin during Pranab Kundu's(balram naidu) scenes.......
no scenes were cut...... kamalji dubbed for all the characters unlike the telugu version where spb dubbed.......

"Haasan looks best as Avtaar Singh, the Sikh singer, and Bush. His make up and appearance as the old woman Krishnavathi Badki is enough to give children nightmares. His Bengali investigator Pranab Kundu sounds more like a Nepali watchman who has spent too long in Chennai.
Some scenes and tracks could easily have been edited out had it not been for the 10 avatars gimmick.Self-indulgent, with shoddy special effects, unimaginative prosthetics, Dasavatar earns points only for the scale of production and for Haasan's audacity in embarking on something this ambitious and self-serving."

"Some movies are interminably long. Some, terribly painful. Some, gimmicky, some self-indulgent. Some are dominated by one actor. Some seem to have been abandoned by the editor. Some are bizarre, some leave with you a headache. Some make you wish they had two intermissions. And some offer you the ‘making of ‘ bits with the movie itself; they don’t wait for the dvd. This one is a combination of them all."

surely there would have been costs involved in getting it released in the North. Let's hope the film manages to recover them and earn a decent profit if possible.
The failure to release the movie while it was hot (last year when publicity for the film was at its peak - with Jackie Chan to add to it) may have cost the film dearly.

Dasavtharam Movie Review
The background score hammers incessantly making you immune to the melody (or the lack of it). The story is as far-fetched as the characters and the ultimate climax is the understanding of how the Tsunami of 2004 came about. At least that is what the makers are driving at. There are also two parallel stories running across, one of
Kamal Haasan the sting operator (a fearless TV reporter) and another of Kamal Haasan the kung fu expert from Japan who is out to avenge
his student's death. Add eight more Kamal Haasan's, and you get the drift of the title of the film!
CHECK OUT: Can Kamal Hassan entice the Audience?
The only actor working hard is Kamal Haasan who has to sit through various sittings of makeovers. The movie sometimes, borders on insanity. In the midst of a very intense scene, there's suddenly a PJ. You wonder what the intention of the director was - comedy or action? The action scenes too get robotic after a while, with another Kamal Haasan, the villain, jumping and flying around, reminding one of Arnie in TERMINATOR.
As for the story, everyone is after a vial, which contains a deadly virus. The vial surprisingly reaches India, Tamil Nadu to be precise, from an American laboratory. And following it for its safekeeping is scientist Kamal Haasan. The rest of the plot is of every Kamal Haasan crossing paths, some in search of the vial while
others thrown in for comic relief.
In between all this, there's also Mallika Sherawat and Asin. Asin comes in twice; the first time is eight hundred years before, somewhere in the 1200s. She appears again eight hundred years later. No, she is no relative of the previous Asin.
And no one found it necessary to explain the connection between the two.
Ram Gopal Varma buried himself in his self-glorification called, 'RGV Ki Aag'. He has found a serious contender in Kamal Haasan.

Q: There is also a lot of talk about the use of chaos theory in the film ... especially across the cyberspace.
The kind of reactions my film has received online is flattering. I have read some unbelievable interpretations of the film. There are communities dedicated to explaining the film to those viewers who couldn't grasp it. Even I have been introduced to so many aspects of the film, which I wasn't even aware of while writing it. I must confess I have written what I wanted. But fans have beaten my intelligence. They are far cleverer.
Q: Dasavathaaram, was supposed to rival the hysteria over Sivaji. Are you satisfied with the results? Has the franchise lived up to your expectations?
The facts and figures speak for themselves. Compare the collections of Dashavathaaram and Sivaji (especially overseas) and the numbers will tell if I should be satisfied or no. I hope to achieve pan-India success with Dashavtar. But even if that doesn't happen, my movie is already a super-hit – loved by a huge chunk of the country's population.

When it comes to the merits of the two films, DASHAVATAR is a gimmicky film where each and every character as well as scene is drafted in the script as an item by itself. If you don't take the film too seriously and are willing to see a 3 hour long chase sequence (which this film really is), you won't quite dislike it!

nice to hear that karthi
i had always believed that once we manage to pull in crowds like 70-75% by sunday evening, the movie wont be a flop as positive WOM will start pouring in. how am i so confident of positive WOM? cummon guys, this movie had become a massive blockbuster all over south india due to a positive WOM, and can north be far behind?
i know, this movie may not become a big hit in north india, but it can never become a flop.
now as per Karthi, sunday evening show had occupancy of close to 60%, which is not bad at all, especially considering the pathetic level of publicity. from now on, i thnk, things can only get better.

60% in a multiplex is a decent turnout. Some bollywood movies fare so badly that multiplexes even go to the extent of cancelling shows. I sincerely hope this negative WOM, spread by the critics generates more curiosity among the audience, which might even help in the movie's performance in the BO.

the following is the actual article as appeared in the Mumbai Mirror. the author has discussed only the screenplay aspect.
INTERVAL BY CHAKO
PERFECT 10
BEWARE: HE'S ALL OVER BOLLYWOOD, INFORMED AND INFORMING
There are no new movies in the country. The debate among businessmen leaves multiplexes with old stock and producers with piling debt. At this rate, The International may just become a longer running film than the Yash Raj perennial known enigmatically as DDLJ and Tom Tykwer, by default, and length in cinemas, the new Aditya Chopra (maker of DDLJ).
In troubled times as these, I walked into a single screen with its aging failed art-deco, ephemera of urine odour, and sat down for the only new local offering, Dasavataram, written and starring the always evolving legend Mr. Kamal Haasan. I nursed lukewarm regret at not watching what seemed like a fun, huge Hollywood spectacle, Monsters vs. Aliens. In about five minutes, the regret disappeared. Monsters vs. Aliens would be too sissy a title for the giant unfolding before me.
I ran out a little after intermission in a sweat, unable to breathe. This was the first time in years of movie-going that my brain could not keep up with the information being thrown at me. Normally, our audiences complain of the opposite, that they are spoon-fed the same information over and over again, which makes them appear illiterate and eventually, bored. Here, trying to follow the basic story will require a neuron synapse impulse rate far quicker that the one trillionth of a millisecond it takes now. It is not unlikely that one would spontaneously combust by the climax, but I didn’t have the physical strength to test that.
This is what I think happened.
We begin with an expansive aerial shot of Chennai, closing in on a huge stadium where a speaker (Kamal Haasan) is narrating a story to George W Bush, Dr. Manmohan Singh and hundreds of thousands of people (a statue takes center-stage). A story that takes us first to post-tsunami Bengal 2006, then 12th century AD, where a priest fights armies of a King to defend a Vishnu temple, then is tortured and sunk into the sea with a huge Vishnu statue (as a casual aside, his wife kills herself by banging her head against a stone). Briefly, we see a martial arts training in progress in Tokyo (2004) where a Japanese martial art teacher (Kamal Haasan) imparts wisdom. Then Pittsburgh (2004), in the research lab of a bio-physicist (Kamal Haasan), working on a thing the size of a bar of soap, whose effects it appears can cause immense biological warfare, worse than a global anthrax epidemic. As he casually encloses this thing in its cryogenic casing to watch George W Bush (Kamal Haasan) grant more research aid to his experiments, a lab monkey accidentally escapes, opens the concealed chamber and eats part of this most dangerous bio-hazardous thing, forcing the lab to shut down forever. Within a few minutes, the doctor discovers that his funders are in cahoots with evil-doers to build this biological weapon to sell it to terrorists for a bag of cash (literally); this after a failed attempt to bribe him. On being discovered at having discovered this, the doctor is shot at and then escapes in a car chase with the extremely dangerous bio-hazard thing. A dubious ex CIA man Chris Fletcher (Kamal Haasan) is brought in by evil venture capitalists to track the doctor (Kamal Haasan) who has dashed to a colleague and his Japanese wife. In discussion, his colleague turns out to be a turncoat and a helicopter hovers outside the window (naturally) with Chris Fletcher swooping in on cable wires. He kills the colleague and after some martial arts with the Japanese wife, beheads her but by now the hero has escaped retrieving the bio-hazard thing from the colleague’s fridge (it has to be kept at a certain temperature, whole side plot about that). So Chris Fletcher (Kamal Haasan) follows by helicopter, is misled by an abandoned cell phone, while the doctor (Kamal Haasan) escapes in a BMW driven by an acquaintance who accidentally sends the bio-hazard bar by Fed Ex to Chennai. Following the package trail, the good Haasan goes to the courier company where the manager also deceives, and in an airport decoy he smuggles himself into the airplane heading to India, with the bio-hazard bar. The bad Haasan (Fletcher) is told to come to India (the good Haasan’s acquaintance, kidnapped in the back of his own BMW, knows where the bio-hazard is headed; he has the Fed Ex tracking number). We cut to Las Vegas to a strip club where Fletcher and evil VC’s arrive, where a stripper, a Pakistani CIA agent (Ms. Mallika Sherawat), agrees to accompany Fletcher to India but after seducing and killing one of the venture capitalists (villain internal rivalry side plot) and marrying Fletcher for easy Indian immigration. In parallel, the Japanese martial artist (Kamal Haasan) is revealed to be the father of the Asian woman in Pittsburgh (oh yes, Fletcher blew up the apartment after killing them, did I forget to mention that?). In an unrelated scene, we see a meeting in The White House Oval office with Republicans and George W Bush (Kamal Haasan) who sends real CIA agents to retrieve the biohazard bar, adding, “Let the plane go to India”. Just as the doctor lands in India (after being arrested on the plane for trying to retrieve the bio-toxin), he’s confined in Chennai airport at the mercy of a whimsical Bengali government bureaucrat Pronob Kundu (Kamal Haasan). Fletcher Haasan and Sherawat show up there and a kidnap shoot out happens with Doctor Haasan, while Kundu Haasan is misled by welcoming the real CIA who’ve just arrived.
And this is just the first half hour.
McG retire. The Fast And The Furious, is slow and delirious after this. Alan Moore throw in the towel. Michael Bay, compared to this man, you’re action sequences look like baby Ang Lee, Stephen Chow, your pacing is Jane Austen and Christopher Nolan, enter therapy please. Like Lenin, someone needs to preserve Mr. Haasan’s imagination cryogenically, forever. Any man who can come up with all this, genius is too little a word to describe it, should be. Forget following the screenplay (we’re not worthy); I just want to smoke what he’s smoking.

Response from Delhi
I saw the movie in Delhi last night. Though it is not too good, the response from the audience was above average. More than 70% of the theatre was occupied, which did not happen for even Tasveer and CCTC. Looks like Dasavatharam is a decent hit in Hindi, though not a blockbuster like its Southie version.

Hindi Dashavatar is getting good response in north India
User Rating: / 3
Kamal Hassan’s Hindi Dashavatar is getting good response in north India. No one had thought that the film where the top south Indian actor appears in 10 avatars will attract audience in north India.
But that is what is happening on the ground. The film has received excellent opening especially in metros besides tier two cities.

irunthAlum himesh reshammiya music, Jackie chan and amitabh for sudio release, sardarji character, mallika sherawat etc were done only having a pan indian audience in mind. and despite the "kola veRi" reviewers the response from the average north indian is good indeed. that was the reason i told once the initial hurdle is crossed, the positive WOM will bring in more audiences.

From 6.15 onwards...
Interviewer: If you talk about the risk factor, Dasavatharam an out and out commercial film..
(before she completes the question) Sir: NO, it is NOT an out and out commercial film,
the hero and heroine donot say they love each other, till the last end..actually they fight, all over the mvie.
and the narrative structure is
absolutely a dangerous structure...
Interviewer: with so many people coming in..
Sir: And you are connecting it, and its thick, with content, you have to remember somany things, and its absolutely the opposite of the commercial film(s) hat has been indicated by the industry. We made it look like that, but we went in our way only...
