Suriya in Kolkata for Aadhavan
Ajay Kumar R [May 22, 2009, 11:27:46 AM]
Suriya is busy shooting in Kolkata for Aadhavan, directed by K.S. Ravikumar, and planned for released later this year. The last time Suriya visited Kolkata was in 1997, during the shoot for Nerruku Ner near Howrah station.
In this film, he plays the role of a Bengali character, and is busy practising his lines in Bengali. Suriya firmly believes in practising and achieving perfection. In Aadhavan, there are negative shades to his character, and he is quite confident that this experiment will be successful.
After a hectic week, Suriya has decided to take time off and enjoy himself on all Bengali delicacies like mishti dahi and rasogolla. He also enjoys having egg rolls and flavoured soda near Esplanade in Kolkata.
It is public knowledge that Aamir Khan was inspired to remake Ghajini after he saw the Tamil version with Suriya in the lead. Suriya has recently joined Ram Gopal Varma for his next flick Raktha Charitra, and we are confident Suriya will give us many interesting films to enjoy!

Red Giant Movies is producing a mega budget film Aadhavan after their debut venture Kuruvi with Vijay. Aadhavan has Suriya and Nayanthara in the lead roles. After a very long sabbatical, yesteryear actress B Saroja Devi has donned the greasepaint for an important role in Aadhavan. Others in the star cast include Vadivelu, Murali, FEFSI Vijayan, and Ramesh Khanna.
Aadhavan’s film shooting, which began in Chennai, moved on to the Chettinadu Palace where about 200 junior artistes accompanied the lead stars and crew for canning a song sequence. Gayathri Raghuram choreographed the dance for the song Dekho Dekho which was penned by lyricist Vaali.
Following this, an expensive set was erected at the AVM Studios where another dance sequence was shot on the lead pair – Suriya and Nayan. The team also canned dance sequences in Darjeeling, in which Suriya, Nayan, Saroja Devi and Murali participated.
Having exhausted all the locations in India, the Aadhavan team now plans to fly down to Iceland to shoot another song. The Yeno Yeno Panithuli has been penned by Thamarai and Dinesh will choreograph it. This is the first time a South Indian film is being shot in Iceland.

Double Bonanza- Aadhavan
Originally Posted by

Movies with heroes in double role have altogether different attraction and pulls in more people than the usual commercial movies. It is amusing to see the same actor portraying two different characters, having similarities physically but not in mannerism. Sometimes, or often, playing both the white and black shades. In recent times several such movies have popped up bringing occasional refreshment on the screens.
‘Aadhavan’, K. S. Ravikumar’s forthcoming movie has Suriya playing double roles. Suriya had already played double roles several times, but this one has made him to play a negative role for the first time. He will be donning duel hats; one of that the good one and other as a baddie. So Suriya’s fans are eagerly waiting for this said to be action flick.
‘Aadhavan’ is a combination of several interesting facts. One, it is the second venture of Udhayanidhi Stalin’ Red Giant Productions after ‘Kuruvi’. Second, the leading lady Nayantara will be romancing the stylish hero for the first time. Third, song sequences are shot exclusively in cool locales of Iceland, a rare location chosen by a film crew, for the first time. Interestingly it was Harris Jayaraj who had churned out beautiful scores for ‘Varanam Aayiram’- another double starrer movie, will handle the rhythmic parts for ‘Aadhavan’ too.
Putting the clock backwards, K. S. Ravikumar had delivered successful films roping famed heroes to play duel characters. Recent ‘Dasavatharam’ stand testimony as the fine example for his achievement. Kamal Haasan essays multiple shades through different characters. Then going by to classic age, Sarathkumar had tried two different grease paints in ‘Nattamai’, a movie that stands out in K. S. Ravikumar’s portfolio.
Going by this black and white shaded movie list, there are many films that present two faces of one actor in double roles. ‘Vaali’ with Ajith, ‘Azhagiya Thamizh Magan’ with Vijay, ‘Singam Puli’ with Jeeva, and who can forget the hilarious film of Vadivelu, ‘Pulikesi’, a movie which rocketed the comedian to a heroic stardom? Well, these movies can really said to be double bonanza – double treat for viewers, to watch their favorite heroes in two characters at the same time on the same screen.

For his K.S Ravikumar directed Udayanidhi Stalin produced Aadhavan during its climax scenes shot in Cape Town, South Africa Suriya was required to hang on to a chopper. Normally most heroes would prefer doing this dangerous shot using a dupe.
However according to a source present on the location: “ Suriya had to be propelled from the ground with the help of cables at an incredible speed to a height of about 150 feet in the air and hang on to the rails of the helicopter and he did it in the sixth take despite a hit on his shoulder!”
The man is a perfectionist; he would roll on the rough sand before every take to get the continuity shot of the dirt on the shirt correct. The source added: “During the Kolkatta, shoot of the film, he jumped off the highest bridge many times before the director’s ok for the shot. His passion and dedication is what makes his action scenes look so real on screen.”

You’ve got to believe this… K.S. Ravikumar has been one such filmmaker who completes his projects within record time. Be it superstars or newcomers: he doesn’t compromise with any hurdles that come along the way of filming schedules. He has directed almost all leading actors Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith Kumar, Sarath Kumar and others.
His magnum opus with Kamal Haasan ‘Dasavatharam’ was the biggest hit of 2008. Within three months of time after this film’s release, he had completed shooting for Sarath Kumar starrer ‘Jaggubhai’. The film features Shriya Charan in female lead role with Surya enacting a cameo part. Later, he kick-started his next project ‘Aadhavan’ starring Surya and Nayanthara in lead roles.
Some of his closer sources have confirmed that Ravikumar is planning to release ‘Aadhavan’ prior to ‘Jaggubhai’. Well, there isn’t any valid reasoning for the delay of ‘Jaggubhai’ as the film’s post production work is still pending.

The music album of ‘Aadhavan’ has six songs, which are composed by Harris Jayaraj.
The film also has Saroja Devi playing a rich woman, who lives like a queen in a big palace like bungalow. Looks like Suriya plays a servant who wishes to take revenge on the family. Surya vs aamir - except that both acted in ghajni, I see no reasons for comparison.
Even if you did, one has to restrict within the context of ghajni. Edhukku ippo comparison?

maddy, I will tell you a real-life episode.
many years ago, a reputable public-figure in the US said that pigs will fly when a black becomes the president of the US.
he was asked to comment on his statement after Obama was sworn as president.
his reply: swine flu.
thats how your incessant attempts to discredit Surya appears to be. :P

I've no idea about Hindi cinema and have no interest either.
As for Amir, I do remember that when he was remaking Ghajini, he called Surya and congratulated him and also asked his advise on several matters.
so, as far as I know - for you anything/everything > Surya.

yea, u see Aamir khan is a success with acting and direction unlike kamal who suffered setbacks with his directorial ventures so obviously kamal fans will try to slot him below surya - quite obvious isnt it

Saw the Aadhavan teaser on Kalaingar TV this weekend. The song is quite catchy.
Can't tell much about surya and nayan yet since it's just a few seconds. We'll see, maybe the movie will be better.
Surya looks cool.

Harris Jayaraj seems a bit tired on that front, but that’s not stopping him from turning to his first love — music.
His songs in Vaaranam Aayiram came in for a lot of praise and going by the hard work he’s put in, that’s the same result that he’s expecting for his tunes in the upcoming Suriya-starrer Aadhavan. And, he’s just waiting for the album to hit the stores.
“There’s a surprise for my fans in it,” he starts off, “The album will be a treat to the ears. I’ve used Dr Burn for a rap bit that’ll have the youth on their feet.” But, that’s not all — in the craze for composing peppy tunes, the affable musician hasn’t forgotten the old-world charm associated with yesteryear singers. “I’ve also gotten Mano to sing a song for me... now, how’s that,” he asks, with a twinkle in his eyes.
It could well be coincidence, but Harris has been scoring for a lot of Suriya movies. Harris expects the music of Aadhavan to be as popular as his Ayan, if not better. So, what’s the connection between Suriya and soulful music? “There’s some connection there, I think,” he muses, pondering for a minute, “Actually, when it comes to Suriya, he’s able to translate my songs well on-screen. His expressions and moves add value to the songs that I compose.”
So, like Suriya, is Harris a romantic at heart too? “No, not at all,” he smiles, “I’m more of a spiritual person these days. My romance is with God.”
It’s on that same note that he talks about his once-favourite director Gautham Menon, with whom he worked on Vaaranam Aayiram. “Anyone will want to work with Gautham,” is all he has to say when asked if he’ll work with the Kaakha Kaakha filmmaker again, “He gave me a chance to try out a dappankuthu type of a number in his film (Anjala...) and I’ll never forget that.”
Does he feel that he ought to have got Vinnaithaandi Varuvayaa, a project in which Gautham joins hands with A R Rahman? “Not at all,” he states, “I’m sure that this new combination will rock.”
Will he want to sign Gautham’s next film at least? “It’s not in my hands,” he says, shrugging his shoulders, “God gives me a decision when it has to be made and that’s how it works. I have no say in my decisions.” Philosophers, take a bow!

“Suriya was wondering how Kamal sir had managed to play so many roles so well when it was difficult to play one role,” Ravikumar, said to loud cheers from fans gathered to witness the launch. The day would also undoubtedly remain etched in the memory of music director Harris Jayaraj as two of the top heroes in Tamil cinema confessed that they were huge fans of his music.

Another specialty of the film is that- generally, some child artiste would play the role of the hero in his childhood, but in this film, Suriya himself played the child artiste’s role too. Maybe we should really start thinking if all these hatred towards an actor are worth the while. Whether it's Vijay or Surya, they are just actors who seem to be doing their job on screen. So watch their films, enjoy them and come back to reality. I can understand the need to have fan clubs, etc for the actors, but why should we undermine and verbally "abuse" a particular actor in order to make another look great?

well.. yaru collection athigam panrangalo.. avanga pakkam poranga..
Suriya is going to become all india star... it is known that suriya is popular btw girls in TN, Kerela, Karnataka and Andra.. i hear the girls who are from north studying in the colleges here also likes suriya.. so he will be more popular after his movie with Ramgopal verma. Note: most of the north girls think surya is unmarried.. and he is 23+yo !!!
Murugadoss is making a script for suriya which will be trilingual.. tamil-telugu-hindi.. so it is obvious that Suntv makes money out of future projects too..

The worldwide gross box-office collections of Suriya’s films in the last five years, place the actor on a different level. He does every kind of cinema and is extremely versatile. He doesn’t want to be slotted in any image trap and if anyone had doubts about his pulling power at the box-office, Ayan silenced them all. Now the actor is tensed as a lot is riding on Aadhavan, his Diwali release has been sold at all areas for a rumoured Rs 40 crore, the highest in his career. In a brief chat with the media the Badshah of Box-office speaks. Excerpts
How was it working with KS Ravikumar, the director with the midas touch?
I was a bit tensed in the beginning and let me confess that it was my dream to work with him. He has directed all big stars like Rajikanth and Kamal Hassan and given so many blockbusters in Tamil. But after a few days of shooting, I started thoroughly enjoying and I learned so much from him. He is cool as cucumber. In fact, both of us are back with Aadhavan after giving super hits like Dasavatharam and Ayan.
Tell us about your producer Udayanidhi Stalin?
Uday is more like a friend and I have not seen a producer who is so involved with his film. His passion and commitment has to be seen to be believed. He was there throughout the shoot, even in the very cold Iceland and was a big support and seeing that we had no problem at any given point of time.
So what’s Aadhavan all about?
My character is that of an assassin in Kolkata. The stills may have me with a gun but let me assure you that there is no blood or gory scenes in the film. It is a clean family entertainer for all ages. Vadivel’s comedy will have you in splits and the songs which are already a huge hit has been picturised in a visually stunning manner.
You always try to do something different in every film. What’s the highlight in Aadhavan?
I play a 10-year old in the film, a 10 to 15 minute footage which will be a major highlight. Initially we were little apprehensive about how it will work out but thanks to Govardhan the Mumbai based visual effect specialist, it has come out very well. I cannot reveal how we did it till the film is released.
How was it working with Nayanthara?
She is a complete professional, who used to come to the sets atleast 5 minutes earlier than me. She has improved leaps and bounds as an actress since I worked with her in Ghajini. Her character has lot of clarity and looks more beautiful.
Veteran actress Saroja Devi is doing a crucial role. Please comment?
Saroja Devi amma was a delight to work with. In fact she re-created the 60’s feel for us on the sets. She is so full of life and positive energy that we all used to get charged up when she is on the sets.
So are you tensed, even when the trade predicts that the film is a sure hit?
No one can guarantee a hit. Ultimately, however much of hard work and pain goes into the making of a film, the audiences have to accept it. I have done my best and now it’s for them to give the verdict as the film opens on October 17 worldwide.

Aadhavan censored, release on Diwali day!
Suriya’s K S Ravikumar directed Aadhavan, produced by Udayanidhi Stalin, has been censored and given a clean ‘U’ certificate.
The buzz on the film is positive and the censors confirmed what Suriya said in his media interactions that “there is no blood and gore in the film, though it is an action packed family entertainer.”
Aadhavan is opening big worldwide in 600 screens plus, with Tamil Nadu alone accounting for nearly 350 of them. In Chennai city, the film is opening in 15 screens, with advance booking likely to start from October 14, as the film has confirmed that it is coming out only on Diwali day (October 17).
Earlier, trade had wanted the film to open on Friday, October 16, so that it could cash in on an extra day before the big weekend. But director Ravikumar says as per sentiments, his films releasing for Diwali day has worked best for him (Villain, Godfather), so he wanted the release date pushed by a day.

Looks like media has already started to show its negative response on Surya.

Watched Aadhavan. Simple story with great and entertaining screenplay. KSR once again proved he's the king of screenplay.
The movie started very baedly but pick up its pace once Surya meets Vadivelu.
Vadivelu, as Banerjee (
) gave one of his finest ferfaarmans! Infact, he gets more screen presence than Surya in the 1st half.
Anandhbabu : Banerjee name ingga Kolkata'la romba famous.
Vadivelu : Naanga waeld pooravum famous
Saroja Devi, Anandbabu and NayanThara all wasted. For once Nayan is not irrtitating. Surya as usual good, but nowhere near his best performance. Surya as a 10 year old kiddie
Very amateur.
1st half full of laughter and second half lacks the pace. Overall, watchable once for KSR and Vadivelu.
Aadhavan < Ayan, but watch it, you wont regret.
PS: Udhayanidhi Stalin makes a cameo at the end of the film along with KSR.

Aadhavan Review
Aadhavan – A clichéd commercial masala
Banner: Red Giant Movies
Production: Udayanidhi Stalin
Direction: K.S. Ravikumar
Star-casts: Surya, Nayanthara, Murali, Rahul Dev, Saroja Devi, Vadivelu, Shiyaji Shinde and others.
Music: Harris Jayaraj
P.S – This film is purely a same patterned commercial cinema that has been watched over hundreds of time herein Tamil and other regional languages as well. K.S. Ravikumar beats the same bush with adequate commercial elements that sends you yawning at most of the times.
The film doesn’t boast of anything exceptional and fails to cater the tastes of even the C centre audiences. Looks like Surya wanted to prove him best in such kind of cheap commercial films as well.
Finally, to make it simple – Aadhavan hasn’t got anything new for you. The actor seems to have acquired some of the ridiculous stunts from few Kollywood actors, who can easily jump away from the ground and leap into a helicopter flying at 100ft above.
The film is about a contract killer Aadhavan (Surya) – a man who can bump off anyone with an ease. His father (Shiyaji Shinde) makes a big deal with Abdul (Rahul Dev) and Aadhavan is assigned to kill a magistrate (Late actor Murali). But the sharpshooter misses his point and judge survives. Now, Aadhavan hatches the plan to assassinate the magistrate over his house, who’s enjoying his holidays with family members…
But every time he attempts to bump off the magistrate, there’s something deteriorating his plans.
And then, Aadhavan’s secret past brings an ultimate twist in the tale.
The film reminds you of various movies, say Rajnikanth starrer ‘Thai Veedu’ which in turn was a remake of Hindi movie ‘Jeet Hamari’. Surya excels with his adeptness over stunts, dialogue deliveries, dance and comedy as well. Vadivelu’s presence over 95% of the film offers more substantiality to the film. Indeed, his comedy tracks are rib-tickling which makes you laugh and enjoy it.
Surya shouldn’t have opted for some dim-witted gestures as the opening sequences about bumping off a Swamiji. A kind request to K.S. Ravikumar: functionality of guns under water would be reduced to extreme level and it would not function properly. But our hero triggers the bullet straight into the target.
Presenting Surya in the negative shade till the penultimate sequence is the biggest minus for the film. At the least, KSR should’ve broken the suspense at intermission and that would have offered a relief to audiences.
Nayanthara looks more aged in her looks and never suits the screens space with Surya. Especially KSR should’ve avoided close-up shots of her face. Saroja Devi is okay while Murali steals the show. Shiyaji Shinde should opt for a yet more challenging role. An actor who made a spellbinding act with his debut film ‘Bharathi’ is spoiling his image over donning certain clichéd roles of a baddie. Rahul Dev sleepwalks through his role.
The costumes over the song are perfect and Surya seems to have strongly demanded for Bollywood type of dresses spotted with Aamir, Salman and Abhishek Bacchan. Cinematography is average and most the shots have been done with Green Matt. Except ‘Hasili Fisili’, none of the songs sound pretty well and it’s a great disappointment from Harris Jayaraj… Harris' background score with English songs is all about inviting ridicule....
Ramesh Khanna doesn’t deserve anything special for penning such stories.
If Vadivelu wasn’t there, things would’ve been unimaginable all throughout the film. K.S.Ravikumar drags the film at many parts, especially the flashback portion. 10yr old Surya wasn’t finely exquisite as it looks more computerized and artificial.
‘Aadhavan’ may have good collections over the box office has producers have planned for perfect scheduling of more shows for the first weekend. On the dot, the film is a polished version of so many yesteryear films and leaves nothing impressive.
The film may make it big in box office, but has nothing substantive to watch out on the screens.
Verdict: Beating the same bush
Rating: 2.5/5

AADHAVAN MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods review board
Starring: Suriya, Nayanthara, Ramesh Kanna, Vadivelu.
Direction: K.S.Ravikumar
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Production: Red Giant Movies
The biggest of this festival season is here and it comes with great expectations. Suriya is targeting a hat trick of hits while KSR is all set to follow up the Dasavatharam phenomenon with another big grosser. Have no doubts when you enter theaters, this is a trademark KS Ravikumar product, no holds barred entertainment with elements for just about everyone in the family. But, it does also come with its share of pitfalls and flaws.
A professional assassin, sharp shooter, jet setter, high flyer – that’s how Aadhavan (Suriya) is introduced to the audience. The customary introduction song does not actually set a racy tempo, but is still foot tapping. He never misses his aim and that brings him a big assignment, one that promises crores. A judge all set to report his findings on a sensational case is the target and Aadhavan is ready to shoot. The bullet misses, the judge survives, Aadhavan fails. With crores and a huge reputation to protect, Aadhavan vows to complete the unfinished job. How, when, where? Watch Aadhavan to find out.
The basic premise of an assassin and the target must lead you to think of a suspense filled, tense and intense plot. But what you get in the first half is exactly the opposite.
You are introduced to a large joint family, Saroja Devi (on screen after 12 years) is the eldest member and Nayanthara as Thara is her granddaughter. Vadivelu is the domestic help and at the helm is the Late Murali who wields the whip and a stentorian tone. Suriya joins the mix and you are in for a hilarious one and a half hours. Trust KSR the script writer to blend and infuse comedy into any story, he does it with finesse here and executes it to near perfection as a director. Ramesh Khanna joins in later to add to the humor quotient. While the main plot does keep moving throughout the first half, it is only close to the interval that it takes a decisive twist. Post interval you are told the details of an unknown identity, a flashback narrates a few family relations and the reasons for an old wound, before we cut back to present to resume the main plot. By now, the pace has slackened a bit. A little bit of romance is slipped in, but it has been kept in check which helps the main plot maintain its course. The last half an hour is perhaps the weakest portion of the movie. Even though the events unfold at a pretty steady pace it fails to engage the viewer. The climax, in an isolated yard with a crane, fully filled petrol tank and a pond nearby are typically Kollywood masala fare. It definitely could have been better.
In the bid for uninhibited entertainment, logic and reason have taken a beating at places. Though that is not uncommon in cinema, those instances do leave you searching for explanations. The most prominent is the scene where Aadhavan opens up about his identity to Thara- How Madhavan became Aadhavan? Later, when it is opened in front of the whole family, everyone seems to swallow whatever has been said without even a shadow of doubt. But, KSR has managed to a large extent to cover up for the lack of clarity at places with his racy direction. In fact, you might find yourself asking questions about the logic behind many incidents well after you have left the theater, not while you are still watching the film. Other dampeners include the placement of songs, especially in the first half. The ‘Dekho Dekho’ number seems unnecessary and extraneous to the script. ‘Yaeno Panithulli’ and ‘Hasili Fisili’ captivate with the visuals and exotic locations.
Technically, Aadhavan has got few things to boast about, presenting Suriya as a 4 feet something tall 10 year old boy must be a first in Tamil cinema. Though one can clearly make out that it is graphic patchwork at quite a few instances, overall it is a job very neatly done, great effort. Camerawork by R Ganesh is adequate. It is only in the above mentioned songs that he gets to translate a rich feel onto screen. Harris Jeyaraj’s music which is already a hit could have been placed and used better, the songs would have served as a bigger strength to the film that way.
Suriya walks through a role that does not challenge him much. The effort and risks taken in the fight sequences, especially the first chase through Kolkata where he can be seen jumping over rooftops etc.., tell a lot about commitment. He looks stylish, angry, cunning and innocent while bringing out different shades of the character that he portrays; a well crafted performance. Nayanthara escapes the glamour trap after a long time and looks fresh. Saroja Devi brings in some old world charm to the proceedings while Murali is authoritative in what is sadly his last film. Sayaji Shinde, Rahul Dev, Riyaz Khan and others do a fairly neat job. Anandh Babu belies the years to shake a leg in the opening song and passes off quite well in a limited but significant role. Vadivelu brings the house down with his comic act. He breathes life into the proceedings every time he is on screen and his antics keep the first half brimming with positive humor; his character adds to the overall Aadhavan experience.
On the whole, Aadhavan is trademark KSR cinema. It has action, comedy, sentiment, romance, music and masala, not to forget his special appearance at the end. There are flaws, missing pieces, loose ends and a stereotyped climax that might put you off, but commercial cinema is always prone to such errors. If you are not a stickler for logic or substance, there are quite a few positives to sit back and enjoy.
Verdict: Carefree commercial – Conditions apply
Rating: 2.5/5

Vadivelu should have used the dialogue "I'm back" .. He is definitely back after a brief dull period.
Vadivelu seeing Surya's activities "Kuranga vida mosamaa thaavuraanae, unmaiyaana kurangugal ellam idha paatha SUICIDE pannikumaeyaa"
He is definitely back.
As far the movie, its a complete family entertainer from the 20th minute of the movie until the remaining 20 mins of the movie with usual flashback and the unusual climax
. Oh I must say, the intro title of Surya is something different. Thanks to KSR.
Remember, the story is from Ramesh Khanna and we cannot expect anything more from him. KSR has done his best to put a screenplay for the story.
The movie has a 10 yr old played by Surya himself. I thought its a good try to begin with. Flashback is again abysmal.
Its a good sign here in Birmingham to see the theatre 80% full for the first day of the show. I remember a Srilankan Tamil saying that only Kamal, Rajini, Vijay and Ajith are famous with us. Now, it looks like Surya has joined them. There were whistles all over the place during Surya's intro which was new to me.
Surya should definitely be appreciated for giving us movies at a regular interval ! Period

By Moviebuzz
If laughter is the best medicine along with mass masala items, then veteran director KS Ravikumar has earned his stripes again with Aadhavan. Add Suriya, who looks sensational in a role that has negative shades and lots of comedy. The actor manages to pump some clean fun and make it the ideal family entertainer for Diwali.
The wafer-thin storyline depends more on Suriya’s star power to cruise through two hours and 45 minutes. Aadhavan (Suriya) is a hired assassin who works in tandem with Ibrahim Rowther (Sayaji Shinde) and his son (Anand Babu) in Kolkata. Justice Subramaniyam (late Malayalam actor Murali), is about to give his final judgment in an organ trade case where hundreds of children died due to the greed of a doctor, Abdul Kulkarni (Rahul Dev).
Kulkarni approaches Rowther with a contract to kill the judge and Aadhavan starts his next mission. But for the first time in his life, the ace assassin misses his mark and Aadhavan, through the help of Bannerji (Vadivel), comes into close contact with the Judge’s large family consisting of his mother (Saroja Devi), niece Tara (Nayanthara) and others. Soon Aadhavan finds out certain dark secrets and also develops a soft corner for Tara. Finally, the hunter turns hunted as the film hurtles towards the climax.
Only problem with Ramesh Kanna’s story is that it does not have a single original bone in its body, and is inspired from various movies. The film moves at a leisurely pace in the first half (92 minutes), depending mainly on Suriya and Vadivel's bickering. The story does not move forward. The second half is racy (73 minutes), despite a predictable climax. The Kollywood mass hero turns into a one-man fighting machine and saves his loved ones after doing the impossible.
The music of Harris Jayaraj is hummable, though the placement of songs just does not gel with the narration, with Hasili Fisili and Yaeno Yaeno in the second half, which looks alike. The action scenes of Kanal Kannan and Franz Spilhaus are sensational, especially the hit and run chase picturised in Kolkata in the first half. Also, Ganesh’s camerawork has sheen. The special effects job where Suriya is transformed into a 10-year-old look realistic.
It is an out and out Suriya show. The film rides on the magic of the actor, and his zany shenanigans alone makes it worth a watch. Nayanthara looks beautiful and classy, and for a change, her glamour image has not been exploited. She comes across as the girl-next-door. Murali, in his last film, puts up a convincing performance while Saroja Devi as the Paati is okay with her trademark, excessive make-up. Vadivel is a scream and is present throughout the film.
Ranging through a wide field of comedy laced with action, Aadhavan is good fun while it lasts. It’s a roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated masala.

Your recent films have received a lukewarm response at the box-office. So, it seems a lot is riding on Aadhavan...
I consider all my films important, including Aadhavan. At the time of release of Villu and Aegan, the media said that their success was very crucial to me. Earlier, I used to be tense and anxious before the release of my films, but now, I am cool as I know that hits and misses are part of this profession and I take it in my stride and leave the rest to the audience.
What’s your role in the film?
I play Tara, a bubbly, fun loving, homely girl surrounded by a huge family of uncles, aunts, and cousins. My best friend and enemy is my paati played by Saroja Devi amma. There is a song that introduces all the characters and establishes the bonding between my grandmother and me. I loved shooting for that.
How was it working with Suriya in the film?
I think all heroes in Tamil are hard working and dedicated to their work. As far as Suriya goes, he makes an extra effort to take risks and is ready to do anything that will be good for his character. On the sets, he is silent and hardly speaks. I was very comfortable working with him.
Tell us about the song picturised in Iceland and your experience shooting in that climate...
Eno Eno... was picturised in Iceland. I think it’s one of the most picturesque locations I’ve ever seen, but at the same time, the weather conditions were very hostile. We went during summer and even then, there was ice all over. It’s so windy that you’ll literally be blown away. As we were shooting songs, I could not wear coats, jackets or inners, and I was freezing.
Are you looking for an image change from a glam girl to an actress of substance with Aadhavan and your Malayalam films?
Glamour girl? I think it’s the media that has given me this name. Of late, I have been criticised for being over-glamorous and keeping that in mind, I have tried to strike a fine balance between glamour and over glamour (smiles).
Rumours are afloat that you are doing a Kannada film and another one with noted Malayalam filmmaker Shyama Prasad...
I am not doing any Kannada film at the moment, but have signed the Malayalam film with Shyama Prasad, who is a wonderful director. I got hooked when I heard the script. You don’t get roles like this coming your way often. I’ve always wanted to do an offbeat film, but with a reputed director. I think the time has come, and here I am.
Your close association with Prabhu Deva has provided enough fodder for gossip. Prabhu’s wife Ramlath has given damaging interviews against you. What is your take?
After Asin and Trisha, will Nayan go to Bollywood?
I hate this question. It is frequently asked to me these days. Is there any compulsion that if someone goes to Bollywood, I should follow suit? I know that every second actress from the south is trying for a break in Bollywood, and I am not in that rat race.

Movie not worth to write any review. Stay away from this junk.
Or watch this, this movie failed in every single aspect. Be it story, direction, acting (btw, nayan is used only for 5 songs and driving the car in the climax - why the hell she cares if they are paying 2C for this), comedy (???? but this is the best of the movie, so think about how bad this movie could be), music (Harris, ur real talent is coming out now!!!), editing and even costumes are not matching between the scenes.
KSR, Surya & Co have taken us back by decades and given us April 1st on Diwali day.

Suriya’s Aadhavan has taken a flying start at the box-office!
The film has released in maximum screens in nearly 450 theatres in TN, Kerala and Karnataka.
In NSC area it has done over Rs 1 crore, while Chennai city reported 100 percent opening on day one of its release. Coimbatore has reported 97 percent on opening day, while in Madurai too the film has taken a very good opening.
And in Bangalore, it released in 20 screens and reported higher revenues than the Hindi film Blue on the first day.
In Kerala, at huge single screens like Kavitha Ernakulam and Anjali in Thiruvananthapuram, it has taken 100 percent opening!
Suriya clearly has proved that he could be put in the same pedestal as Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan and Vijay as far as reach in the southern states is concerned.
The trade says that at the box-office, Suriya has been anointed as the new king.

Suriya’s career has been soaring high and it is now reported that the actor enjoys the third biggest opening in the US after Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
The fans across the globe are eager to watch this star’s films and his Aadhavan is no exception. The film is due for a Deepavali release this year and the online booking, particularly in the US, has been on full swing with many cities closing the online booking within a few hours. There are reports that local exhibitors are holding discussions with theatres to accommodate more shows during the weekend to meet the demand.
Yet another factor attributed to the good online booking is the fact that Aadhavan does not have a strong competitor releasing this weekend in the US.

If you take, US, opening plays a major role in the "market"!

Even Kuruvi had a big opening when compared to aadhavan..
surya movie-la word of mouth nalla irukum so in a longer run it makes more profits .. aadhavan-la adhuvum seriyilla

US Market has changed drastically in the recent times. Especially since the release of Sivaji. For example Sivaji collected 3 times more than what Chandramukhi collected. Dasavathaaram collected 5-6 times more than what Vettaiyaadu vilaiyaadu collected. More people are going to theatre these days. So it is not fair comparison for old movies collections with new movies. So in that way Surya was paid more for his movie when compared with other movies and it may change very soon with next release of other actors movies. I hope this makes it clear.

Surya's Aadhavan fetched more money as Minimum Guarantee when compared with his previous movies. Surya's past movies did well and that is the reason for the price. If other actors see the same raise in collection then they will double their money also. For example Kandasamy fetched big prize as minimum guarantee but failed miserably in the collection.

True in North East, but completely different in bay area. In NE, Vijay movies wont even get released where as bay area has some good reception. It hard to quantify. Apart from Rajni and Kamal, people turn up for Shankar, Manirathnam and Madhavan (SSS). Recently they started liking Vikram and Surya, but Vikram lost it now. Surya will follow vikram soon if he continues to manage Ayan and Aadhavan type of movies.

வடிவேலு கிண்டலா? ச.

For gods sake, please dont compare Aadhavan with Kandasaamy.
selective reading?
i wasnt even comparing them
My bad
I meant Aadhavan cant be as bad as Kandhasamy. Not in a light years :P

Rajini had a good laugh
October 24, 2009
Superstar Rajinikanth was at the Four Frames Preview Theatre recently for the special screening of the Suriya-starrer Aadhavan. Rajini was accompanied by his wife, daughters and grandson. According to reports, the superstar was thoroughly bowled over by Suriya’s performance and had a good laugh over the comedy scenes that had Vadivelu.
The actor shares a special rapport with Aadhavan’s director KS Ravikumar and congratulated him on the efforts. Speaking about Suriya, Rajini said that his performance and body language were perfect in the film and it was evident that the actor had put in a lot of effort.

‘You and Suriya can work again’- Rajini
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, October 24, 2009]
We all know that our Superstar is one person who never fails to appreciate hard work and quality products, we have one such incident here...
Rajinikanth had gone for a special screening of Suriya’s ‘Aadhavan’ along with his family. We heard that Latha Rajinikanth, Soundarya, Aishwarya Dhanush and our Superstar’s grand son Yathra were in Four Frames Preview Theatre on October 16th.
The whole family was enjoying the show so much that our Superstar laughed loud heartily over the comedy scenes. (The fact we all know is that no hero can be as comical as Rajini is... He is a multifaceted Superstar!) Rajini was visibly having a great time laughing over the scenes between Suriya and Vadivelu particularly and came out of the theatre with a big smile. Rajini had wished the film’s producer Udhayanidhi saying, “The film has come out so well. Congratulations for your whole team. Suriya-Vadivelu combination has worked out so well.” Then Rajini had immediately called K S Ravikumar and said, “Ravi Sir, the film is really excellent. You have used Suriya so well. You and Suriya can work again.”

Aadhavan - Agile, active and attractive
Expectations and hopes were high on filmmaker K S Ravikumar especially after the stupendous hit 'Dasavatharam'. The director who is considered a man with the Midas touch in Kollywood, has tried to live up to all expectations in 'Aadhavan'. He succeeds in his attempts partially.
'Aadhavan' is nothing but a rehash of several yesteryear flicks but the USP is the racy script by Ravikumar, who mesmerises the audience with quick narration. Though it is one of the regular mainstream commercial cinema, what sets it part from other films is that Suriya dons the protagonist.
One of the young breed of actors, he is the one who always experiments with his movies and never shy to take risks. This time too, he has taken all responsibility on his shoulders. The huge star cast including Nayanthara, Saroja Devi and Murali besides Vadivelu makes it an interesting fare.
The movie revolves around an assassin Aadhavan (Surya), who can kill anyone for money. His father (Shiyaji Shinde) strikes a deal with Abdul (Rahul Dev) as per which Aadhavan is directed to kill a magistrate (Murali).
Unfortunately the magistrate survives the murder bid. Aadhavan now plans otherwise. He decides to finish his assignment by bumping off the magistrate in a house, when he decides to spend his holidays with his family.
Unfortunately all his plans to kill the magistrate fails every time. Lady luck seems to be on the magistrate’s side. Eventually Aadhavan takes a different route to finish him off. Does he succeed or not is the rest of the script which has got a twist in it.
All credits to Suriya. The actor who shot the bull’s eye with stylish flicks like 'Khaakha Khaakha' and 'Varanam Ayiram' has proved that he can excel in mass masala ventures too. The young actor has also proved that he can not just emote well, but dance and fight well too.
In other words, he has announced the arrival of mass hero in him. Suriya has played a 10-year-old boy for a flashback portion in the movie, which would give your eyebrows many a reason to raise with surprise.
Nayanthara looks pretty and her onscreen chemistry with Suriya is good. Saroja Devi returns after a decade to play a substantial role. Murali (who is no more) fits the bill well while Shayaji Shinde has nothing much to do onscreen. Hogging all is limelight is Vadivelu. He occupies maximum screen space to bring the roof down with laughter.
Harris Jeyaraj’s musical score is impressive especially 'Hasiliyae Fisliyae...', while his background score is average. The story by Ramesh Khanna could have been more interesting had the director added more suspense and twists in the screenplay.
There are sequences which are far from logic and stunt sequences defying logic. But Ravikumar has no pretensions as he sounded clear from the first frame that it is a movie for the masses. Produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, Adhavan is a movie that would bring joy to mass action lovers and front-benchers.
Aadhavan - Above average

Aadhavan - Excruciatingly painful experience. Absolute bore-fest with a plot and characterizations which test your patience to the limit.
Apart from some hilarious English dialogues (in the press conference), its so crappy that this doesn't even fall into the so-bad-its-sheer-fun category.
And Vadivel's comedy track was ok but not as good as i expected it to be (hub sagaakkal remba edhirpaarka vechitteengale!). The Chandramukhi track was much better.
I was in a good mind to scoot well before the interval but the wife wouldn't agree (though she also didn;t like the movie very much). Thankfully, kozhandhai restless aittadhunaala i am escapism by interval...

as long as he has fans like this, Surya can redeem himself.
I watched the Kerala videos and was
with the reception. Do they screen tamil movies in tamil in Kerala?
And not even one woman audience?
According to the anti-Surya gang, Surya's fans are mostly women?

The first Surya film to release on the South African big screen, Aadhavan, out-performed Kamalhassan's Unnai Pol Oruvan and Vikram's Kandhasamy in its opening weekend.
The film raked in R1.2-million in its first 16 days at Chennai's Sathyam Theatres.
Directed by KS Ravikumar (Dasavatharam, Muthu and Panja Thanthiram), the film is an action enter- tainer with a generous dose of comedy. This is the first time that Ravikumar has directed Surya and the first film to project the actor as a mass hero of masala films.
Surya and Nayanthara head the cast, supported by the late Muralli, Rahul Dev, Vadivelu, Ramesh Khanna, Shayaji Shinde and Fefsi Vijayan. The film also sees the return of veteran actress B Saroja Devi and '80s star Anand Babu (son of the late Peter Nagesh).
Surya plays Aadhavan, a professional hitman whose status rockets after a high-profile killing. His father (Shayaji Shinde) manages his new "career". This leads to a second lucrative assignment from the reptilish Abdul (Rahul Dev). Aadhavan's assignment is to kill Judge Subramaniam who is handling an important case that could seriously implicate Abdul.
A major problem arises when Aadhavan misses his target. An incensed Abdul threatens them but Aadhavan vows to eliminate his target within 10 days. Using Judge Subramaniam's cook, Bannerji (Vadivelu), as an unwilling accomplice, Aadhavan enters the judge's household. Will he succeed in his attempt before his identity is discovered?
Aadhavan has a lot of positives amid a few major flaws. It contains some of the most impressive action sequences seen on the Indian screen and boasts cutting-edge editing and brilliant cinematography.
The weakest link is not Ramesh Khanna's story, which had all the potential of a racy entertainer, but the screenplay written by KS Ravikumar.
The pace is leisurely in the first half but this flaw is overlooked given the delightful comedy by Vadivelu who is in one of his rare impressive performances.
In terms of acting, Aadhavan has some outstanding performances. Surya is stunning in his portrayal of Aadhavan, revealing aspects of his talent never seen before. In addition he achieves an Indian first by using computer graphics to play a 10-year-old boy.
Nayanthara is in a remarkably subdued role, while Saroja Devi impresses in her comeback role.
Aadhavan , an action entertainer, should not be missed.

"In a brilliant homage to yesteryear hit andhaman kaadhali, the comedian is named bannerjee. In the former, sivaji ganesan is a believed murderer trying to reunite with his family while surya in aadhavan unites with his family with intent to murder! Farah Khan shows such assured touches throughout the movie yada yada"

"edhukku ivlo kastapaduran.. vidhyasama nadikkatti unnala thoongave mudiyadha".. just compare his slang with Sathyan's .. he brings the real humour in kongu thamizh
------------------------------------
sample:
1. In SMS.... "naanellam kudigaran aavennu nenachu kooda parthadhillai"
2. Gajini: "akka. .ivan rombha panrankka" (incidentally, it is about Surya )
------------------------------------
& the fact is KSR is the one who made this kongu slang more successful.. though other directors used this before.. but not for all the characters in the film (AFAIR).. he is the one who wanted each & every character possible to speak in that slang (sometimes it turned out to be artificial) ... the best in delivering those dialogues is uncle VIJAYAKUMAR .. Sarath comes next in that (IMV)......
Aadhavan is way below in KSR's standards

Aadhavan(sans climax) is watchable, thanks to Surya and Vadivelu. Adhennamo theriyala KSR's movies are never liked or appreciated by the critics but the masses think otherwise.

My initial reaction was (saw it only in youtube) what is so stand-out-funny in this in terms of bad CG etc?

This piece no for me! Suriya annoys in every frame and Vadivel has done much better and the film itself, well....

Producer Udhayanidhi Stalin held the 100 days celebration of Aadhavan at Park Sheraton Hotel in Chennai on March 23 night.
Kamal Haasan was the chief guest at the function and KS Ravikuar, Uday, Suriya, Nayanthara, Saroja Devi, Vadivelu, Harris Jayaraj and Ramanarayanan were on the dais. All the artists, technicians, and office bearers of the unit were honoured on stage and mementos were given away.
Everyone praised Udhayanidhi Stalin for being a wonderful producer and directors like Lingusamy and Murugadoss gave speeches. Suriya was hailed as the Waris (heir) to Kamal Hassan by Parthipan. As a noble gesture Uday gave away Rs One Lakh each to charitable organisations like Jeevan Velicham, Nambikkai, People AIDS initiative, St. Annes and T Lokesh, an engineering student.
Kamal, in his speech said that there is no special quality that Sivakumar has not taught his son Suriya. He said: “One thing I would like to emphasize is to put your recent success behind you. This is the most essential mantra”.
Nayanthara looked elegant and simple sans any make up at the function. Remember that this is the first function of Aadhavan that the actress took part since the film was launched. She was seen smiling throughout, striking a great rapport with Saroja Devi and director KS Ravikumar who also praised her saying that she is a very dedicated actress.
