Roshan, I didn't mean to demean or undervalue the magnitude of this achievement. Not even close. Even if these awards didn't come, Rahman is special to me. And this being more than just pan-Indian estimation, I'll root for him because I think he deserves it.

For Oscars, I suggest they play the other musical motifs. I suggest "O..Saaya", "Paper Planes", or "Gangsta Blues" to be played. Or, I think they've sent "Jai ho" to be played for CCA and Golden globes, then I suspect it is going to be the same for the academy awards. I hope ARR gets nominated for the original song as well, to see him perform live..

Original here refers to songs/score composed for the movie, as against using an already composed song for the movie soundtrack (people who know all 4 things correct me if im wrong).
For example, Scorcese padangal-la neraya paadalgal odittu irukkum, by various artists. Even last year "Inside Man" ku 'chayya chayya' song use pannaangale...
Best Original Screenplay versus Best Adapted Screenplay
And Best Original Background Score nu thaniya onnum illa..

No longer would anyone say he is only liked by "Indians" living abroad and not real global recognition etc.
My sister's family watched Slumdog millionaire in a theater in NY state and said that the audience were spellbound and didn't even move till the title credits were closed. Finally the recognition for our talents!
Hope ARR will continue to score massive successes globally . I read somewhere Gajini is killing all the records for any Indian film, ever...so two reasons for him to be elated right now...but there'll be a day when all world records will possibly be shattered by another ARR Hwood project

If ARR can pull of an Oscar this year, he would be the most down-to-earth star/performer from our country that would acheive this world class acheivement with total humility and minimum talk! I bet he has not even said he is aiming for one or acted that way till now! :P

Watched the whole show yesterday. While all the veillaikaarans and vellaikaarchis were going hysteria when announced as winner, ARR was cool, calm, collected and said so few words that I hope at least that characteristic alone should make the Oscar voters vote for him (if nominated). Great role model for artists everywhere. Keep your head down, and just do a great job.

its saddenning to see not many ppl responding for such a big event. also, ppl take very less chances to hear non tamil music. not only that golden globe episode didnt get the deserved limelight among both public and tamil media, tamil music lovers listening to slumdog too is in less number....
its an pulsating album, as someone already said
ARR has once again proved that he is a pioneer in Indian Music, doing and acheiving new goals, which others didnt care for much

Danny Boyle: He's something of a genius you have to say. I approached him to do the film, and he's a very busy guy obviously, so popular. It's difficult to explain to people in the West just how famous this guy is and just how many records he sells. But he is very simple and plain and I love that quality about him. He's very straightforward despite his fame - almost extraordinary, supernatural fame.
I told him that I promise I will mix the music with the film. I am not going to hide the music, because that was always one of the things that I thought he would be wary about. In the West we tend to use music and hide it behind the film and you are not aware of the music a lot of times and I said I will be very proud of your music. And I will mix it right at the front of the music and it will be bold.

Karunanidhi hails Rahman for Golden Globe
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today expressed joy over music director A R Rahman winning the prestigious Golden Globe for his musical score in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
"Rahman is the first Indian to win the award after having won awards and accolades in Tamil and Hindi... I wish he wins more such awards," Karunanidhi said in an official press release, congratulating the composer.
Rahman hails from Chennai and was once labelled "Mozart of Madras" by 'Time'. He became the first Indian to win the Golden Globe, for Best Original Music Score with "Jai Ho”.

Mumbai to India is like what New York city is for the US! Easily the most happenning city of India, a land of multiple cultures and a place where you see a representation of people from various states of India, the capital of Indian economy/culture, the house of Bollywood, the centre place for any Indian cricket board meetings etc. and the list goes on and on and on! 11/26 Mumbai attacks is not just a mere attack on the city. But an attack on India's pysche and economic/political stability!
I'm glad ARR dedicated this award to one billion Indian population who are still recovering from the shock/grief/agony of the Mumbai attacks versus the actual victims!

A R Rahman and Global Music
January 13, 2009 by maami
“Music and cutting are the first things that excite people about an advertisement”, said Rajiv Menon, the ad filmmaker.
This was June 1992 and I asked, “So who makes music for the advertisements here in Madras?”
“Meet Dilip”, he said.
I got a number, fixed an appointment in a jiffy and landed on a narrow lane near Kodambakkam in a residential area. It was called Panchathan Recording Studio and I never did ask him what it meant. I walked down an aisle like area before plonking in a chair in a tiny room where his assistant Noel took calls and we discussed the efficacy of homeopathy. A few minutes later I was ushered into a recording chamber and Dilip, just 25, sat behind a recording console complete with 16 tracks, digital mastering stations and more. It wasn’t out yet that he had just completed his first feature film Roja and he would be introduced to the world as AR Rahman. By then he had composed music for the then popular ad tracks, ‘Boost is the secret of my Energy’, an ad for Usha Lexus sewing machine and Viva, and Pepsi among others.
Rahman looked like the average Madras Joe. He was painfully shy and refused to be photographed. I’ve managed to pull out a dog-eared copy of my first ever article mentioning him, with a passport photo in black and white. The photo caption simply reads: Dilip.
For almost five years I got a bit familiar with Panchathan recording studio. I met him intermittently on my work to talk to him, but something changed. The wait for an appointment with him took longer and longer. He would come and speak haltingly and quickly, answer pertinently, and disappear in a rush into the cavernous cool darkness of his studio. Work was piling on his plate, fame came knocking, and he was sought after like never before. “I work through nights”, he’d smile. Rahman makes it a point that in life talent and hard work are essential and latent genius will shine, but for true fame and power, the caress of the Big Hand is a must. As the national awards piled up, he’d would rock back in his chair and say, “Allah ke dua”, as though to tell himself that what is real is the work he pitches in; the unreal part the glory and the fame and the money that surely came with extra blessing.
What made the home cum office environment at Panchathan was the unfilmi kind of atmosphere and some new singers- fresh voices who spoke with the ease of metro people and gathered there with youthful banter before melting into the darkness of the recording hall. I remember bumping into the bouncy Baba Sehgal, a pocket Venus crooner like Jasmine Barucha, local talents like Mano, Subhaa, Anuradha Sriram, Anupama, Sujatha, the grizzled but then sober Hariharan, the irrepressible percussionist Sivamani and others. They came from Bombay, from Delhi and elsewhere to gush about Rahman before disappearing into the womb of the recording studio. The vibrant voices, the gutsy and throaty vocalists, rustic, folksy music makers, bass voices, they were as new as the man who was making a different kind of music inside.
Rahman can be credited with liberating the Indian popular singer voice profile, for loosening the vocal chords literally. Film music in India encompasses popular music in a larger whole than in the Western world where the music business exists independent of cinema. The voices that have captured Indian imagination in popular film music have had enormous talent, but they were often homogenized. The women singers were praised for their pitch and sweetness; the male singers for their dexterity and the larger than life heroes they gave voice to.
Rahman broke that. He is truly a man of ‘sound’. A new voice, a new sound excites him, helps him layer what he called a, “fat, chunky soundtrack”. He has taken forward this to India’s biggest music market: Bollywood too. He must be credited for introducing the feverish vocals of a ‘Chaiya Chaiyan’ Sukhwinder Singh to a Punjabi-dominated Bollywood; the vocal gutso of a Shankar Mahadevan; the recent warbling of Karthik and many more that I can’t remember.
A natural progression of his search for new vocals and fresh sounds has led him to assimilate the popular and the marginal sounds, the latest techniques in binding music to make it sound what they call “international”. He makes “global music”, music that reflects its terrain-be it Sufi, a quawwal, rap, reggae, orchestral, classical, folk, jazz, and blends it and layers his tracks to produce music that is vibrant, melodic and rich.
It only seemed natural that in time, the operas in Britain would come calling; or Tolkein plays would need the drama and sweep of his orchestration. The world is ready to listen in to music from every quarter of the globe with an international appeal. It’s soul is native and yet its sweep is across seas.
And yes, it’s only fitting that India’s prolific music maker lifted a Golden Globe last evening.

True

my worry is that his share of Tamil films might go down even further. But honestly I dont think he will be flooded offers, proly for India based films. He needs time and proper projects to shrug off that image.

Rajini congratulates A.R. Rahman
January 13, 2009
Showered by the congratulatory notes and messages, the recent Golden Globe Award winner A.R. Rahman must be a happy man indeed. It may be recalled that Rahman won the award for his music composition for the film Slumdog Millionaire. Among the film personalities that have congratulated him are Rajinikanth and Shankar. They have both stated
that Rahman has made Indian and Tamilians, in particular, proud. Others who sent him their wishes are Abirami Ramanthan, Rama Narayanan, Vairamuthu and AVM Saravanan. The widespread talk in Kollywood is that music of the same quality can be expected in films like Endhiran and Mani Ratnams’ Ravan for which A.R. Rahman scores the music.

Kartik Raja -- Rahman's victory is a lesson in life for all Indians. That nothing is impossible, if you put your mind to it.
Sreenivas (singer, composer) --- It's absolutely overwhelming. .And the Oscars are just a step awayRahman is the ideal combination of a genius musician and a fantastic human being.
Vidyasagar[Music director] - Like everything 'first' has its own value. A.R Rahman being the first indian has made all indians proud. I am extremley happy that someone from our faternity has won this prestigeous award. I wish him all the very best in life.
GV Prakash : When I realised he is the first indian to win this award, it made me even more proud of being an indian

You are spot on! First of all, there is no need for any vizha. Given ARR's shy personality, a vizha will only embarrass him!
Second of all, even if they conduct any vizha for ARR, they should ensure that they filter/screen to invite only "qualified"/knowledgable people instead of inviting every Tom/Dick/Harry from the industry!

This award is not for arr fans its for the whole india. without kollywood this is not possible. kollywoodthan avaru valathuchu. bollywood also made way for him to enter the hollywood. but kollywood than thai. so as a tamilan and indian we all should be proud. even if any1 from our industry entha awarda win pannalum nan ethey alavuku happya iruppain. coz they represent our country. now the hollywood ppl wil start to notice not only arr also the indian film industry so great things are waiting for us.

Let me see who are those qualified/knowledgable people according to you ..Pls list
down.
"Qualified"/knowledgable as in those who have worked more closely with ARR and those who were responsible for his growth, if at all there is any vizha. Folks like Rajeev Menon, KB, MR, BR, Sangar, MSV (ARR's idol), SPB, Mano, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan (folks who made entry in Tamil via ARR), HJ (ARR's Sishyan), Vairamuthu, Vaali etc. Instead of having "relevant" folks, the last thing one would want to see is the entire film industry assembling and doing rituals/politics (
a la Hogenakkal stuff)...
Personally, as a ARR fan, I wouldn't like to see any vizha for him! It would only make him feel embarassed when all the spotlight is on him! As ARR himself says he treats GG as yet another award but the award means a lot more for the country than for himself!

That ARR has won the golden globe is making waves in Singapore as well. In fact the movie is getting ravishing reviews. I am delighted at ARR winning the golden globe not because of indian or tamilan but rather because he truly deserves it and the score was quite innovative. I believe the reason that ARR also got this award was because of Slumdog's overall film value(perfect in every sense) which goes to show that a movie's success also gives way to the recognition of its other components.

This is certainly an achievement. The Golden Globes is usually seen as a precursor to the Oscars. ARR has a good chance of winning.
I use to feel real proud and boast to my Australian friends when ARR's songs are played in movies, or if he scores other movies. I've heard Dil Se's theme song used in 'Inside Man'. His tunes appeared briefly on 'Lord of War'. ARR also scored music for the Chinese movie 'Warriors of Heaven and Earth' and part composed for 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'.
Congratulations to him.
