It’s hard to believe that there is still audiences for films like Thenavattu. Playing wildly to the gallery or what the trade calls B & C viewers, the film leaves you almost brain dead!
Like it or not, in terms of its story idea , scripting, direction and in virtually every aspect, V.V Kathir’s debut film has no logic or plot. He has pilfered the first half from recent mass masala films like Tirupachi and the climax from Sanda Kozhi!
Jeeva who has so far acted in meaningful films, now calls himself Ilaiyanayagan, and does a poor imitation of the original Ilayathalapathy Vijay. From the Aruvaal he uses, dialogue delivery, body language, comedy and fight scenes, including smearing holy ash on his forehead looks very similar to what Vijay has done in director Perarasu’s film.
Kottai (Jeeva), is an expert woodcutter from a village adjoining Madurai (the most popular town in Tamil Cinema, where all the guys are brave hearts, daring, dashing, caring and innocent!). On his mother’s (Saranya) advise, to see the world, he moves to Chennai, and finds work with the local don and Kattapanchayat specialist Kailasam (Ravi Kale).
He works as a guy who maintains his ‘Aruvaals’ as he thinks that his boss uses them to cut trees, till one day he realizes the guy needs them to chop off his enemies heads! (this is the dumbest aspect of the film)
Meanwhile he falls in love with Gayathri (Poonam Bajwa) a music teacher, who is kind, good hearted and helps the poor and needy. The educated Gayathri flips for Kottai who has only studied up to the fourth standard, due to his loving and caring nature.
Kailasam’s son Santosh (Shafi), a lecherous drug addict, mouthing punchlines is a bad guy whose job seems to be raping girls including a lecturer who teaches him in college! A cop and an ACP (Sai Kumar) wants to arrest him, (the guy has even raped his sister), but can do little about it as the Home Minister (Rajan.P.Dev) is protecting all the goons in the town!
One day Santosh tries to get fresh with Gayathri, and our hero goes berserk, and the rest of the story is as predictable as unofficial power cuts in Chennai!
Srikanth Deva’s music is pathetic (No wonder Sun TV is not promoting any songs from the film). As for the performances, well, absolutely no comments. In the climax Jeeva bashes up atleast 150 guys single-handedly, leaving some of them dead. Do you want to know more about this film?
Verdict- Avoidable

If Jeeva gives few more movies like this, I think he will become ORIGINAL (in the future reviews)

‘Thenavattu’ strictly for the brain dead (Tamil film review)
“Thenavattu”; Cast: Jeeva, Poonam Bajwa, Ganja Karuppu, Ravi Kale; Music: Srikant Deva; Cinematography: Vetri; Direction: V.V. Kathir; Rating: *”Thenavattu” (chutzpah) is a tale strictly for the brain dead. For the second time in a little over two months Sun Pictures have come up with a film that seems sillier than their controversial maiden venture.
Director V.V Kathir has filched a few scenes from earlier hits without any sense whatsoever, with ridiculous results.
The film is all about a rustic blacksmith Kootai (Jeeva) who makes sickles for a living.
For no apparent reason, the protagonist lands up in Chennai with a sidekick (Ganja Karuppu) in tow to manufacture the deadly weapons for a gangster Kailasam (Ravi Kale).
Suddenly a buxom belle Gayathri (Poonam Bajwa), a music teacher, enters the scene and promptly falls in love with the sickle-maker.
Soon, there are others - an assorted bunch of politicians, cops and others who drag the story towards a climax wherein the gangster’s son molests Gayathri resulting in a vendetta.
The senseless storyline makes one wonder how Jeeva, who has been doing only offbeat sensible films, accepted this assignment.
The cast, direction, music and comedy deserve to be ignored.

'Thenavattu' opens big
The director of 'Thenavattu', V. V. Kathir has proved to be a true student of his mentor Perarasu by churning out a commercial entertainer that is loaded with action sequences, punch dialogues and minimal logic.
The film which has been bought and distributed by Sun Pictures is being aggressively popularized through the television channels of Sun Network.
Thanks to all this, the film has opened big in Tamilnadu. 'Thenavattu' stars Jeeva in an out and out action role and has shades of Vijay from 'Tiruppachi'. Poonam Bejwa plays the heroine.
Thenavattu's brilliant opening proved that action films with punch dialogues are still saleable in Tamilnadu.

Thenavattu - A Commercial Cocktail Sourav and TM
Jeeva was on a penance longing for a commercial hit. His recent films featured him in off-beat roles and the actor's fans were eager to see their favorite hero donning a macho-man challenging baddies and bashing the goons.
'Thenavattu' has come as a blessing in disguise for all Jeeva fans as the actor sings, romances, utters punch dialogues, thrashes the villains and evokes sentiment on screen. All credit to debutant V V Kathir, who seems to be well versed with the art of making a 'Pakka' commercial from his mentor Perarasu, a trendsetter with his commercial smash hits.
Kathir has rendered a movie that is one-dimensional with characters uttering racy dialogues. The actor has attempted to recreate the Vijay magic, with right instructions from the director.
Jeeva has played his part well. He has portrayed it with dignity and oozes energy. He excels in stunt sequences especially towards the climax. He seems to have matured quite well to play a mass hero.
Quite a contrast to his earlier films like 'Kattradhu Thamizh' and' Rameswaram', Jeeva comes in flashy and colorful costumes. He dances with joy and seems to have involved himself ardently in the role.
Poonam Bajwa continues from where she left off in Seval. She has played her role with ease and delivers. She is cool and poised on screen. Ravi kale impresses as baddie. His body language deserves appreciation. Ganja Karuppu's comedy is not hilarious but good to an extent.
The plot starts off when Kottai (Jeeva) comes from Madurai to Chennai to eke out his livelihood. He works as henchman to Kailasam (Ravi Kale), a dreaded gangster. Kailasam's son, a womanizer, is behind Gayathri (Poonam Bajwa). Gayathri, Kottai's ladylove, runs for cover. Eventually, Kottai takes on Kailasam to protect Gayathri. Whether he succeeds in his mission forms the crux of the story.
Srikanth Deva's music adds pep. The racy tunes coupled with peppy beats makes the spectators tap their foot. Director Kathir didn't experiment much and took the familiar path of commercial entertainer following the footsteps of his guru. Sun pictures' has the capacity to foresee a movie's success and continues their saga that started off with 'Kadhalil Vizhundhen'.
'Thenavattu' is sure to make it big among the B and C centre audiences.

Many seems to be “rejoicing” that he is doing a bad film. If this film is as bad as Pori, I don’t mind watching. He needs to do all types of films, and of course, don’t just stay on one genre.
Trouble is, after Vikram (and to a certain extent Madhavan in AE and Thambi) I have not seen any heroes who can be intimidating in these type of all-out masala flicks where heroism rules.
Note: No, Vikram is not in my favourite list.

I think they are buying the movies for a very low price just like how they do for new movies. They reduce lot of unnecessary amount by buying the films directly. Marketing cost is something that is integral and at the end of the day I think they can survive still.

Only Seval can be classified as a competition for this movie in B and C centres. But with that fading away, it has no competition as of now. VA will be an average one in B and C due to the genre.

If you are watching it in a multiplex, well.. experience can be a mixed one. Normal theater, again it will be fine since one won't worry much about the money they spend there. (I prefer normal theaters for these films). Best case, wait for the DVD
In these films, hero is very important and if you prefer a film for the hero, then I think you can give a try.
I get only suntv here and no other tamil channel. (due to local cable operators. In other connections, they are present. ) Hence, the only choice is watching the films played by suntv and I watch thenavattu AD at least 10 times a day
I am thinking of trying my hand at mega serials for fun
Who knows, we might watch it in Sun network within few months

Thenavettu rocks Tamil Nadu
For a while, we could not believe our eyes when we saw the theatres playing Thenavettu – it is raining hard and it is not even a weekend, but still the theatres were swarmed with a crowd usually seen on weekends. Jiiva starrer Thenavettu is achieving phenomenal success and is on its way to join the list of super hits of 2008.
People are in a frenzy inside the theatres – whistling, howling and hooting, welcoming each and every “punch” dialogue and the thrill it offers by extremely vocal expressions. There were people from all the strata of the society – there was a huge group of IT professionals (did they take leave from work?!), the usual frontbenchers, families and college students.
The chemistry between Poonam Bajwa and Jiiva is scintillating. Songs typical of Srikanth Deva are eliciting shouts of “encore” from every member of the audience. It is pleasing to see that Chennaites have found something to elevate their spirits in the midst such inclement weather.
Kollywood is probably the only film industry which can make films combining social messages and entertainment so effectively without being didactic. This new Kollywood action movie has become a rage and also promotes noble ideas like equality and inclusiveness in society. How? By showing respect and empathy for the most-ignored section of society – transgenders. Unlike most Kollywood films where transgenders are the butt of lewd jokes, Thenavettu projects them as just another section of society and does not disrespect them in any manner.
Thenavettu, the second presentation of Sun Pictures (first was Kadhalil Vizhunden), has also become a super hit justifying the expectations of its makers.
