Abhiyum Naanum has backed out of the Diwali race.
Seval - will be another crap from hari.
the ones to watch out for is Vaaranam Aayiram (for GM's direction and Surya's depiction of his roles) and yes, Aegan
, even though it is a remake of the hindi film MHN, what to watch out for is the performance by the one and only Thala Ajith.
there will be heavy competition between Vaaranam Aayiram and Aegan. yes in the A centres.

Sanjeevi,
please read out my above post. I haven't said which film will be the clear winner or so and I said which films are to be watched out for.
I just said that Seval will be a crap (same old stories retold). I didn't say that it will be a BO failure or flop or hit.
I said VA and Aegan are the films to be watched out for but didn't say who will be the clear winner and said there will be heavy competition between the two.

IMO,
Aegan-Clear winner(Even if it is mediocre)
VA-Might be a hit or become a superhit also. But verum 'A' centre audience vachikittu konjam kashtam.

6 Days to Diwali!
By Moviebuzz | Tuesday, 21 October , 2008, 09:36
Only six days to Diwali 2008! It looks like there are only three biggies - Aegan, Vaaranam Aayiram and Seval for Diwali this year!
There are simply no theatres to screen more than three biggies in many centers in Tamilnadu. As of now all the best screens in most areas have been taken up by these films.
Suddenly Vaaranam Aayiram has got a short in the arm as Gautham Menon and his team is aggressively marketing the film. Many theatres in the state have shown a marked preference for the film.
The release dates are as follows-
Aegan- Release date, October 25, Saturday, Advance Booking in Chennai city from Oct 22.
Vaaranam Aayiram- Release Date, October 27, Monday, Diwali Day.
Seval. Release Date, October 27, Diwali Day.

Diwali dampeners
For the first time in the history of Tamil films, only two commercial star-studded films are opening worldwide for Diwali. Ajith's Aegan and Bharath's Seval. Apart from these two, a little known film titled Megham, with newcomers in the cast, will have a limited release.
Normally, anywhere between four and six films get released during this festival. However, this time, even three days before Tamil Nadu's second biggest festival, the usual buzz generated by big-ticket Diwali releases is conspicuously missing.
One of the leading exhibitors in the state Abirami Ramanathan says, "Most Tamilians, after having their traditional oil bath and performing pooja on the festival day, make it a point to watch at least one new Tamil release without which their Diwali is not complete. It is a part of our custom which ensures that a festival release gets a decent opening. Some of the biggest hits of stars like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth have been their Diwali releases."
Diwali has become a metaphor for big movies. The hype and hoopla surrounding it has to be seen to be believed. Whether it is the star cast, music or just the filmmakers, there is a tremendous buzz about Diwali releases. The fans and trade, to a certain extent, believe that a release during the festival of lights will determine the star power of a hero when he is pitted against other stars.
However, sadly this year, Gautham Menon's magnum opus with Surya's Vaaranam Aayiram, Madhavan's comedy Guru En Aalu, Prakash Raj's Abhiyum Naanum and Silambarasan's Silambattam have been postponed at the last minute due to various reasons. Says trade analyst G Sekharan, "You cannot say Ajith's Aegan versus Bharath's Seval is a clash compared to last year's battle royale fought at the box-office between big-budget Vijay's Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (ATM), Surya's Vel and Dhanush's Polladhavan."
The competitive spirit is missing. Trade circles also admit that since it is like India playing Bangladesh in a one-dayer, the fans will lose interest and this might impact box-office fortunes.
What's worse is that this year, so far, star-studded big movies have really failed to brighten the box-office. Small movies like Subramaniapuram, Kathalil Vizhundein, Anjatheey and Santosh Subramaniam have raked in the moolah at the box-office.
A film like Dasavatharam, due to its big budget, just covered its cost and made a very small profit, while films like Kuselan and Sathyam did not bring any cheer to the trade which bet big on them.
To a certain extent, Diwali has lost its lustre due to the invasion of satellite channels. This Diwali, Tamil television channels are beaming super hit films. The market leader, Sun TV, is premiering Rajinikanth's all time big 2005 blockbuster Chandramukhi while arch-rival Kalaignar TV is going to telecast Ajith's all time big super hit Billa, released last December!
The trade is worried as they feel the real Diwali battle is on television and not in theatres. Rains all over Tamil Nadu and particularly in Chennai and surrounding areas ahead of the festival are also a worrying factor.
Among this year's Diwali releases, Ajith's Aegan is virtually getting a solo release as it is opening in over 400 screens tomorrow. The film is expected to take the biggest ever opening of the year as Ajith and Nayanthara, after Billa, are considered a red-hot pair, and the Ultimate Star, according to Kollywood trade pundits, has the second biggest opening after the Superstar.
Says Raju Sundaram, the film's director, "The film is an unpretentious mass entertainer, which offers sufficient value for the price of a ticket. Enjoy!"
The trade feels mass director Hari's family, action formula film Seval with Bharath turning into an action hero may emerge as the dark horse when it releases on the festival day (Oct 27).
They point out how Hari's last Diwali release with Surya's Vel, after a slow start went on to become the Diwali hit of 2007. If the rains do not dampen the Diwali spirit, expect some fireworks at the box-office, though there is hardly much choice for the viewers.
Remember, the 2005 Diwali box-office was washed away by the rains?

By Moviebuzz
If Hari had made Seval some 40 years back, he would have been bang on his target audiences. Unfortunately he has dished out the film for Diwali 2008 viewers, who will not stomach such a stale weepy story of Thankachi Pasam and supreme sacrifices.
It is a steamy tearjerker woven into a doomed romance. It questions the basic intellect of the audiences, and the second half slides down the slippery slope of half-baked melodrama laced with blood.
Hari has helped himself to Bollywood director Sooraj Barajatiya’s, library and taken the basic thread from Hum Aap Ke Hai Kaun and Maine Pyaar Kiya. He has mixed it with his usual formula and packaging, but added too much of sentiments which makes the film highly melodramatic and gives it a 60’s glycerin tearjerker feel and look.
The film opens in 2008 with Murugesan (Bharat) coming out of jail, and the flashback begins at Sivasailam village somewhere near Ambasamudram in southern Tamilnadu and tells the story of the protagonist from1989 to 1991.
Murugesan is a vagabond who is not serious in life and spends most of his time loitering around with his uncle Thapal Thangavel (Vadivel), the village postman. His father (Rajesh) is a hardworking wholesale flower seller who has his own flower garden.
One day Murugesan meets Parijatam (Poonam Bajwa) a beautiful Brahmin girl and daughter of the local temple priest (Y.G Mahendran) and falls for her. Parijatam has been brought up by her elder sister Gayathri (Simran) who marries a guy (Prem) chosen by her father.
At the same time there is local feudal landlord and village head (Sampath), who has an eye on Parijatham, which leads to a conflict with Murugesan, who has now turned a new leaf to win over his girl!
Meanwhile after delivery Gayathri suffering from cancer dies leaving Parijatham holding the baby. The orthodox Brahmin Agraharam relatives and friends force her to marry her brother-in-law!
On a parallel track, a heart broken Murugesan tries to save her from a lusting relative (Krishna) and the village head. Want to hear more of this dumb story?
The film just drives you crazy, and story telling itself is confusing with a lot of plot holes. At times it is hard to tell what the film is about, though it is very predictable at every turn as Hari has taken certain scenes and situations from his earlier films!
Totally devoid of any original snatches of writing, the film plods along for nearly 2 hours and 45 minutes. In the first half there are some comedy scenes between Vadivel and Bharat which raises a few laughs, but after some time it becomes repetitive.
Vadivel is present throughout the film, as the postman who is more interested in playing cupid between the hero and heroine. Simran’s character and her make-up (post interval) has not been well etched. New girl Poonam is just ok as she lacks screen presence in a meaty role.
Bharat does what Hari’s heroes have done in the past with style but has been let down by a poor script as some of the characters action is not justifiable.
On the technical side Priyan’s camera is a plus point and the locales are lush and he used the Jimmy –Jip crane to the maximum, to get top-angle shots.
One of the biggest disappointments is the music of G.V Prakash, who has not been able to churn out a single melody.
Sense, style and story is missing in Seval All in all a very disappointing venture from Hari who has given entertaining films in the past.
Verdict : Torture

MHN was co-written Abbas Tyrewala, one of the more interesting screenwriters in Hindi.
It was an okay movie and a sort of tribute to filmy cliches and some enjoyably juvenile humour:
Eg. When SRK sees Sushmita he hears
sax and violins :P
If you emit and enjoyable groan at that pun - then you will like the film. Else skip.

NOV, I guess you would have set some expectations from Ajith after seeing Billa. But earlier Ajith had told in an interview that it is going to be a commercial light hearted entertainer.
And you would have felt terrible mainly because of Suman-Sriman so called comic crapper villainy and also some of boring jeyaram-satyan comic crap.
strictly speaking jeyaram has been wasted.

It was an okay movie and a sort of tribute to filmy cliches and some enjoyably juvenile humour:
Eg. When SRK sees Sushmita he hears
sax and violins :P
If you emit and enjoyable groan at that pun - then you will like the film. Else skip.

Nowadays screenplay determines the watchability of a movie. Thats why with even a paper thin story, a movie can be entertaining.

One alert to all Ajith and Vijay fans -- 2 things to be noted:
1. Both Ajith and Vijay are superstars because they compete with each other on the same track --- COMMERCIAL TRACK (not like Rajini or kamal).
2. It is not Ajith or Vijay who disappoints fans always, it is fans too who disappoint them. You guys can't expect every movie to be a Varalaru, Billa or Gilli, Pokiri!!!! Give them a break!!

Haven't read AV review. But I feel AV is too harsh on Aegan. Not just AV, even the critics. Film is good and is watchable. They are projecting it as if it is like thirupathi, aalwar kind of film.
