Vishnuvardhan's 'Sarvam' on the go
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, October 15, 2008]
'Sarvam', produced under the banner of Ayngaran International and directed by Vishnuvardhan has Arya and Trisha in the lead roles. Telugu actor J. D. Chakravarthy and Malayalam actor, Indrajith play other prominent roles.
Yuvan Shankar Raja and Nirav Shah have been entrusted for the departments of Music and Cinematography respectively.
'Sarvam' is under filming and the shoot has been currently going for a song with Trisha in the exquisite sea shores of Goa.
Actress Trisha, who is busy shuttling between her Kollywood and Tollywood films once revealed that she was much impressed with the glamorous looks of Nayantara in 'Billa' and probably that can also be a reason she has accomodated this 'Sarvam' offer in her hectic schedule, which is by the same director and the cinematographer of the stupendous hit 'Billa'.
The trio of Vishnu-Yuvan-Nirav is believed to make magic and wonders in 'Sarvam' too which is expected to be an early 2009 release and the audio launch of the film would be on November 21st, 2008.

Whats VV's filmography so far?
Arindhum Ariyamalum
Pattiyal
Billa 2007
any more? the first two were produced by Malaysian deejay Geetha (she also did cameos in both films)
Among the three, I like AA the best, both the movie and the songs.

His first movie is Kurumbu... that is flop....
Geetha is yuvan's friend.... that's why vishnu got chance for AA after the colossal flop of kurumbu.....
Hope Vishnu do the sarvam as a stylish one.....

Sarvam Audio track master CD prepared in Australia
Aarya must be very happy as the Audio track of two of his movie “Sarvam” and “Naan Kadavul is launching very soon. Music Director Yuvan Shanker Raja and Director Vishnu Vardan both tech-wizards are particular about the quality of soundtrack, so the master CD of Sarvam is being prepared in Australia. With only one song to be filmed, ‘Sarvam” crew is getting ready for postproduction work that must probably begin very soon.
Sarvam means everything, likewise the Music and the movie will prove everything pretty soon!

I want a third choice..
He is not that good, imo. First was a remake that nobody remembers. AA wasn't good either, but was saved by YSR. Pattiyal was his best, with good music and good performance by Bharath. I can't/won't talk about Billa because Ajith has lot of fans here

So far I liked all Vishnu movies... The best one for me is undoubtedly PATTIYAL particularly Vishnu has extracted awesome performance from BHARATH. IMO, at present Vishnu is giving some of the best entertainers. Further I found that the songs were too good in his movies. In previous movies like AA and Pattiyal, Arya did a good job. So I am expecting more from Vishnu in SARVAM. Vishnu+Yuvan+arya combo has raised my expectations.

Sarwam trailer with Villu
By Moviebuzz | Friday, 09 January , 2009, 09:46
It is a major coup for Vishnuvardhan and Arya as their Sarwam trailer is going to be shown along with Ilayathalapathy Vijay's Villu, releasing on January 12.
This means the first look of the film will be seen by a world wide audiences, by piggyback riding on Vijay's Villu reach. It is a very good strategy by the producers of the film Ayngaran International, who are producing both the films.
Vishnuvardhan says: "Sarwam has shaped out well. We are in post production, with only one song to be shot, which we will complete by the end of the month."

Sarvam’s trailer screened in theatres
-------------------------------------
The trailer of Arya’s upcoming Sarvam in which he pairs up with Trisha, was officially released yesterday and also projected in many theatres. Ever since the release of this trailer, public’s interest has soared higher and the film has become a favourite point of discussion over a cup of coffee for many. The slick-looking Arya and Trisha and their chemistry in the trailer has attracted Kollywood audiences. And so does Nirav Shah’s cinematography. If just a trailer could have such a profound effect, imagine what the film could do!
Sarvam is a beautiful love story directed by Vishnuvardhan (Billa) and produced by Ayngaran International’s K. Karunamoorthy and C. Arun Pandian. Releasing after Naan Kadavul will surely give an edge to this film, as people would still be in awe of Arya’s performance in Naan Kadavul. Also, Arya’s role in Sarvam will be quite opposite to that of Naan Kadavul, an intense drama, which will be a refreshing change. All this should definitely work in favour of Sarvam.

In conversation with Vishnu Vardhan
16 Jan 2009, 0000 hrs IST, SREEDHAR PILLAI ,
Vishnu Vardhan has given Tamil cinema a new, peppy look.
He has done just four films — Kurumbu, Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal and Billa in five years. And all of them are refreshingly different, innovative, slick and racy. Having worked with Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma and Santosh Sivan, he is largely influenced by their styles. Now, on to young director...
Why the title Sarvam?
It means either ‘the almighty’ or ‘everything’. My film revolves around five characters — Arya, Trisha, JD Chakravarthy, Indrajit and child artiste Rohan. It is a simple love story narrated in an emotional background.
Tell us about the story...
The story works on the premise that everybody has a guardian angel protecting him as death hovers in the background. Then, there comes a turning point which either makes or breaks the person. Two stories run parallel in the first half and they interlock post-interval, leading to a stunning twist in the last 15 minutes of the film.
It looks like you are making two films in one...
That’s right. The first half of the film is set in the urban concrete jungle of Chennai and is more about love and relationships. Arya plays an upcoming architect while Trisha is a doctor. I have treated the second half like another film as the locale changes to the green, cool, misty Munnar. I try to make my films look raw and realistic, within the basic framework of entertaining cinema.
How do you compare your earlier films with Sarvam?
Arinthum Ariyamalum was realistic, Pattiyal was raw and Billa was slick. The Sarvam script was ready two years ago and I was to start shooting with Surya, even before Billa. After a photo shoot with Surya and Hansika Motwani, the project was dropped two days before the shoot was to commence in Munnar. Then, I went on to do Billa with Ajit. After that, I revived the project in April last year with Jammy (Arya’s pet name). I can’t describe Sarvam in a single word. I will say it is a new trip for me which is more expressive and visual than my previous films.
You have a special relationship with Arya, your all-time favourite hero. What’s his role in the film?
(Laughs) Jammy is my buddy. He is a madcap character, a crazy guy with whom I bond well. To be honest, both of us wanted to take a break and go our ways after Pattiyal, but fate intervened and we have done Sarvam. Now, I have told him that for the next few years, we won’t work together. I hope we stick to it. Over the years, he has grown as an actor and today, he can carry a scene all by himself. He can be moulded into the role and is a director’s actor. See what Bala has been able to get out of him in Naan Kadavul, which is a landmark film for him. In my film, he is the pivot around which the film revolves and is a very flexible actor.
Trisha has a million-dollar-look in the film. What went into creating that look?
I chose Trisha because she has a child-like innocent smile that was closest to the requirements of the character. Arya and Trisha have an awesome on-screen chemistry.
Tell us about the other actors?
The supporting cast for me is as important as the lead pair. I initially approached my favourite actor, Mohanlal, and then Arjun for one of the important roles in the film. But both did not have dates. It was then that I thought of J D Chakravarthy of Satya fame. JD plays the role of a football coach. I wanted an actor who is not too familiar with Tamil audiences. Then, there is Indrajit, a Malayali actor who plays an IT professional and Rohan, an eight-year-old kid.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs have always been a major draw in your films...
I love Yuvan’s compositions. He has always given me chartbusters in all my films. All five songs in Sarvam are very melodious.
The industry grapevine has it that you are very rigid and refuse to change your team of technicians...
I’m comfortable with them as they have provided quality and sheen to my films. Nirav Shah is one of the best lensmen in Indian cinema. He is very committed and his compositions are terrific. Sreekar Prasad, my editor, is the person with whom I first share my ideas. He has a very young outlook and as an editor, he knows exactly where to stop and when to step on the gas to make the film racy. Thyagarajan Master, the veteran action choreographer, is very different and makes my fight scenes look real. Finally, my wife Anu Vardhan is my costume designer and the person who gives my films the special look. All of them are responsible for giving my films that extra edge.

"Sarvam is slick" - Vishnu
Director Vishnuvardhan is confident that that his 'Sarvam', which has shaped up well, will woo the audiences.
The movie starring Arya and Trisha in the lead roles was shot in Chennai, Goa and Munnar. The movie has cinematography by Neerav Shah and music by Yuvanshankar Raja.
The trio Vishnu, Yuvan and Neerav is always considered a safe best in the industry. Says Vishnu, 'I feel comfortable working with them. Neerav is an exceptional talent while Yuvan has always rendered hit numbers for my movies'.
Speaking about the movie, he says, 'it is one of the slick and entertaining film in my career. Everything is class about the film. All my artistes have given their best. The movie has an interesting star cast with the likes of Arya, Trisha joined by the likes of Telugu actor JD Chakravarthy and Malayalam actor Indrajith. The on-screen chemistry between Arya and Trisha is rocking'.
Interestingly, Vishnu was planning to do the movie with Suriya. However at the last moment, he pulled out of the project and the baton was passed to Arya.

Pongal release ellam Bogi release Ayiduthu pola irukke. Blatant lies from Media particularly SUN pictures
Since Sarwam is a Vishnu movie, I expect it to be slick. What about the screenplay?
IMO, Sarwam should not clash with nAn kadavul.

5 characters of 'Sarvam': Vishnuvardhan
The more Vishnuvardhan speaks about 'Sarvam,' the more expectations rise.
The story of 'Sarvam' was meant for Surya, but differences of opinion cropped up and the teaming did not work out. Then Vishnuvardhan got busy with Ajith in 'Billa' and then turned to Arya for 'Sarvam.' They have been shooting quietly for the film. Now that most of the work is complete, he is ready to speak about the film."When I wrote the screenplay, I did not want anything in it to be predictable as my creation. It was a challenge and now that I have seen the rushes, it has turned out like that and I'm very happy. There's no heroism in the story. I'm happy that Arya suits the role so well. There are only about 5 characters in the film including Arya, Trisha, Chakravarthy, Indrajith and a small dog. When one is happily leaving for a place, would it not be shocking to have an accident? This film would give such a jolt. If 2 estranged friends suddenly happen to meet in person, how would that be? Some parts in the film are like that.
In the first half of the film, I have depicted the rushed life and whimsical events of Chennai in a comic manner. In the second half, thick forests and eerie silences give a thriller effect. On the whole, 'Sarvam' will appeal to all rasikas. Yuvan's music would be a character in itself in the film," said Vishnuvardhan on a happy note.

'Sarvam' is my dream project: Vishnuvardhan
IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 30, 2009]
Director Vishnuvardhan is optimistic that his 'Sarvam' would do well. Brimming with confidence he said, 'I have been carrying the movie in my shoulders for over a couple of years. Time has come for me to pass it on to the audience'.
Dwelling on the story, the director says, 'death will bring a change in everyone's life. Some may face with courage, while many fear to face it. Arya and Trisha, who have different ideologies come together at one point. What happens next is the plotline.'
'It's a movie for all section of the audience. Yuvanshankar Raja, Neerav Shah among others has joined hands with me once again for the venture', he says and adds, 'Telugu actor JD Chakravarthy plays an important role in it. He oozes with confidence on screen'.

The 'Billa' man is back
Vishnuvardhan wanted to do this film with Surya and in fact, the latter had accepted the offer. But when the shooting was about to start, there was some issues, resulting in Surya's withdrawal. Then Vishnuvardhan moved away from this project and got busy with Ajith starred 'Billa'.
Just after the success of Billa, the producer (Ayngaran International) started 'Sarvam' with Aarya and Trisha in the lead without much fanfare. Now the film is almost completed and Vishnu is more than satisfied after seeing the rushes of the film taken so far. He has reportedly said that the film had come out just as he imagined it. The specialty of this film is that the movie revolves around five characters including a puppy dog. Apart from Arya and his lead pair Trisha, there is Chakravarthy and Indrajit to complete the four main characters.
So, what is the story of Sarvam? The story, according to sources, travels from cosmopolitan city to that of dense forest with a few twists and turns along with message about real friendship. The film takes off by subtly criticizing the fast tracked city life by poking fun at it. Soon it shifts gear and moves into the silent and timeless life of forest and that too in an accidental way. The turning point comes as an accident that disrupts the excitement of a family getting ready for a long tour.
Yuvan Shankar Raja has scored the music and the film is slated for a February release.

Listened the songs of Sarwam only once.
Theme music is good. I liked it. It reminds me uttalakkadi (part) from My Dear Marthandan and Billa theme(part or extension of Billa theme) though not exactly. :P
Sila iravugal by YSR has caught me well just in the first listening itself.
Siragugal engo by Javed Ali and Madhusree seems to be a good one particularly Madhushree
kAtrukullE vAsam pOna by YSR also seems to be a good one.
Other songs I have to listen a few more times.

“Sarvam is an emotional romantic thriller that will appeal to a wide section of the audiences,” says Vishnu, “Actually two stories are mixed in this film which has just five characters (Arya, Trisha, J D Chakravarthy, Indrajit and child artiste Rohan). The film will be visually appealing and the on-screen chemistry between Arya and Trisha is terrific.”
Vishnu is all praise for cameraman Nirav Shah who has shot the film in locations as varied and diverse as Chennai, Munnar, Palakkad, New Zealand and Rann of Kutch! The cast recently shot a song (Siragugal...) in the Rann of Kutch (close to the Pakistan border), under difficult conditions. “The music of Yuvan Shankar Raja is rocking the charts. Two of the numbers (Neethanae.. and Sutta Suriyane..) were composed by Yuvan even before I started Billa!”

Trisha v/s Tammu- Battle begins
By Moviebuzz | Thursday, 12 March , 2009, 11:42
The entire media focus has been more on Trisha’s fierce fight with Nayanthara, for the top slot.
But Kollywood grapevine has it that a new battle front has opened between Trisha and the hot new girl Tamannaah.
It goes a long way back when Trisha was approached by Moserbaer Entertainments to do the Jab We Met, remake in Tamil now titled as Kanden Kadhali. Initially she agreed, but later backed out as she was not keen to be paired with Bharath.
But soon, Tamannaah signed the film and the film has become hot. Later, when Lingusamy had problems with Nayanthara, in the Paiyya issue, Trisha was the first choice but again the role was finally snapped up by Tammu.
Remember Tammu too has become hot in Trish’s stronghold of Andhra after the recent success of Koncham Ishtam Koncham Kashtam.
Now the battle for supremacy is going to be a intense no- hold barred shoot out at the box-office on March 27, when Trisha’s Sarvam takes on Tammu’s Anandha Thandavam! In both the films the heroine has an important role and is the pivot around which the story revolves.

As I said earlier, I'm not supporting Sarvam just for the"Yuvan Factor"...
I support it coz I'm very much confident about the Team VV-NS-YSR
Betw, I'm not thwarting AT here. I will like that also
Copy'o, xerox'o, inspired'o Sarvam will be good (Again my confidence)...
Betw, AT too is unoriginal as it is adapted from a novel
j/k
Music wise both the movies are/would be (bgm) brilliant...

‘Sarvam – More sleek than Billa’ – Vishnuvardhan
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 18, 2009]
When everyone perceived ‘Billa’ to be his magnum opus, here’s a dazing statement made by Vishnuvardhan. The filmmaker who has recently completed postproduction works for ‘Sarvam’ had interactions with media channels.
Vishnuvardhan said, “Possibly, Billa could’ve been shot in B&W format for that would have suited. But ‘Sarvam’ has lots of flamboyant picturing with unique tones throughout the show. Precisely, it keeps shifting with the ambience of screenplay’s plot”.
So, how about the successful team gearing up again?
Vishnuvardhan goes sure-footed in uttering that he’s got a good team in hand. Cinematographer Nirav Shah, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Editor Sreekar Prasad had delivered spellbinding shows in all of Vishnu’s previous films. “We’ve been sharing good rapport allowing rooms for open suggestions and that pushes us with good outputs”.
More on Yuvan’s Musical score, he adds “Illayaraja’s ‘Adada’ would persistently appear throughout first half. In fact, it goes on as a signature theme with vital grandness. The theme music itself reveals the motif of complete tale with first half bounded with fun, frolic and romance. On the contrastive levels, the latter part treads with unexpected twists and turns’.
Getting on with duo Arya-Trisha, Vishnuvardhan said that pairing up together for the time would’ve urged everyone to lookout for their onscreen chemistry. Certainly, Arya and Trisha are brimmed with over-the-top show. JD Chakravarthy dons the characterization of a football coach with hyper-strained nature. Master Rohan has the most prominent role in this flick and his naturalistic approach in the frame would fetch him best credits.
The film’s release date was earlier slated on April 10 and now has been preponed to March 27.

Heard that a Rottweiler plays an important role in the movie. Gossip is that it was paid the same remuneration as that of Arya.

Eagerly awaiting this movie, should become one of the best in recent times and perhaps in this year. I have really hope in Vishnu-Arya-Yuvan-Nirav combo, they truly won't disappoint and after hearing the songs and seeing the trailer, my expectations are on a high. Really hoping they deliver a mindblowing entertainer and finally a stunning thriller. This is my most-expected movie at the moment.

Sarvvam postponed to April!
By Moviebuzz | Friday, 20 March , 2009, 22:08
In a sudden turn of events Vishnu Vardhan’s Sarvvam scheduled for release on March 27 is now postponed to April.
The first copy of the film is ready, and it will be censored in a day or two. But due to certain reasons the producers Ayngaran International has decided to postpone the release of the film.
Now it looks like Sarvvam will release in the middle of April. Lingusamy’s Tirupathi Brothers Pattalam is likely to get a solo release on March 27.
The views expressed in the article are the author's and not of Sify.com.
This is anandha thandavam
....A wise decision by VV esp with big guns like Tammannaah and Aascar Ravi involved..
Jokes apart, i think ayngaran wants to go for a solo release..

Kandhasamy will be releasing in May at the earliest, I even believe it will not release until June. So, good chances for Sarvam to become sole winner.

Surya's next immediate movie after Pithamagan was Perazhagan. It also proved to be a hit for Surya, who won Filmfare awards for his acting in both movies.
The same can't be said for Vikram, whose next immediate movie was Arul, but he more than made up for it with his next after Arul, Anniyan.
(Pithamagan to Ghajini has a gap of 3 movies for Surya)

Sethu the biggest turning point for Vikram who was continuously delivering flops and yeah after that he made big improvements (ignoring the flop Vinnukkum Mannukkum between Sethu and Dhil)
Appadi paarthalum Surya's first Bala movie was Nandha. The same can be said about him. He was doing small and soft roles. Then improved to do a movie like Kakkha Kakkha (that was the movie which made me recognise Surya as an actor)

Vishnu Vardhan's Sarvvam in a limbo!
By Moviebuzz | Wednesday, 15 April , 2009, 10:34
Vishnu Vardhan’s highly publicized Sarvvam release seems to be in a limbo.
The film was scheduled originally to release on March 27, before the producers Ayngaran International got cold feet!
Vishnu and Arya had gone through the media circus of interviews and television bytes to promote their film. There was a lot of expectation as Yuvan’s music (launched among public on Valentine day) had clicked and youth audiences would have taken it forward, if the film had released.
But now the latest we hear is that the London based producer is not in any hurry to release the film. It looks like the carefully laid out publicity campaign of the film has gone awry.
Let us hope the film releases atleast in May, as the buzz around it is good.

‘Sarvam’ faces the scissor, all set for a release
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, April 22, 2009]
Ayngaran International’s ‘Sarvam’ has completed shoot over a month ago. The film was sent to the censor board yesterday, where the film, a romantic action adventure, was certified with a clean U certificate. All that is left now is for the movie to hit the screens, and it is expected to be in late May , after the elections and IPL Series.
‘Sarvam’ features Arya and Trisha in the lead, and is directed by Vishnuvardhan, after his blockbuster ‘Billa’. This is yet another film from Vishnuvardhan and Arya, a team that has so far given delectable films, be it ‘Pattiyal’ or ‘Arindhum Ariyamalum’.
Trisha pairs with Arya for the first time and plays a doc. Despite her role, the film is said to have a song shot in Goa featuring the actress in a sexy two piece. Trisha, who is always known for her charming portrayal of roles, is expecting another big break through ‘Sarvam’, in which she is supposed to have a meaty character. The film also brings back to the Tamil screen, JD Chakravarthy. Music from Yuvan Shankar Raja is already topping the charts, and Nirav Shah’s slick camera work is expected to create a name.

Sarvvam gets ‘U’ certificate
By Moviebuzz | Wednesday, 22 April , 2009, 19:35
Nearly after a month after the first copy was ready, Vishnu Vardhan’s Sarvvam was seen by the censors on Tuesday (April 21) and cleared with a clean ‘U’ certificate without any cuts.
The buzz is that Trisha’s two piece swim suit scene shot in Goa has been retained. The film is said to be racy and attractive with very rich production values, highlighted by Nirav Shah’s camera work.
Now it is up to the producers Ayngaran International to decide on the release date of the film. According to sources close to the producers the film will release only after elections and IPL finals, which clearly means May 29 or June 5, a long way to go!

Sarvam will hit the screens on May15th and its debonair promos have already raised the expectations with many novelties in the offing. As the film gets ready for its release, our Senior Editor Jyothsna Bhavanishankar caught up with its director Vishnuvardhan at his aesthetically and tastefully done office in T Nagar where Vishnu lets his hair down and spiritedly talks about the film, Arya, Trisha and many more.
BW: About the title
Vishnuvardhan : Many people have asked me about this. Sarvam, as we all know, means everything. The film revolves around five characters and the events in their life. There is one perspective of the film which talks about our life revolving around our loved ones. The other angle deals with that one event which completely turns our life which may become a volte-face of our life. We may have planned something but a sudden event could change everything. ‘Sarvamum’ changes and a new life would emerge which is closer to the film’s narrative structure. That’s why it is titled Sarvam. It is not supernatural or superficial. It is a very straight, simple and emotional film.
What is Sarvam all about?
It is all about a viewing experience. If I say everything now, I am snatching away that experience. It is a simple story in the life of five characters - Arya, Trisha, JD Chakravarthy, Indrajeeth and Rohan. JD Chakravarthy is a familiar face in tinsel town but a forgotten one. When people like him come into the film, you tend to believe the reel. Their behavior pattern, their acting style, which we have forgotten for some time, will appear fresh on screen now. The same thing can be said about Indrajeeth, Prithiviraj’s brother. He plays Rohan’s dad in the film. Rohan is a new find who is completely naïve about cinema. He is a raw and fresh clay and is fantastic. Sarvam is about these characters and the world within them. Sarvam is a trip and you should take this trip.
What is Sarvam’s USP?
I cannot answer this in a simple sentence. To start with, Sarvam is nothing like Billa and that I consider as its USP. It is different from Billa and there is something interesting in it. It is different in the manner it is formatted and modulated. Personally, I find the songs have turned out fantastic. I am sure the audience will have different perspectives once the film is released as there are different angles and dimensions in it. My USP of the film is it is a very emotional trip. This is one field I have not forayed into so far. My earlier films Kurumbu, Arindum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal and Billa are all different and not related to each other. And in the same vein, Sarvam will not have any connection with these films. Sarvam is fresh on its own.
About Arya
I am teaming up once again with my everlasting buddy Jamshed who is none other than Arya. I wanted to do this film even before Billa when it was conceptualized two years ago. Sarvam is an old film but is still fresh. Though people advised to me to go forward and do other films, I wanted to go back and do Sarvam and was keen to get it out of my system. It was to happen earlier but did not and many things have changed over a period of time. Perhaps, it is destined to happen now. We don’t decide when the film should happen, the film decides itself.
That’s how Arya came in after Naan Kadavul. I have always shown him in a very grubby fashion but he is actually very tall and handsome. I myself find him very fresh and good looking now. I wanted to give a new look to him, because I wanted to get excited about this project, and he fitted the bill. The Arya that we have all along seen is completely different from the actual one. He is the naughtiest and the most charming brat. Though he looks macho, he is only a child from inside. When I needed someone energetic and rugged for my character, Arya matched the role perfectly because he is charming, good looking and also rugged. The first and second half of Sarvam will appear like two different films in terms of mood and in making but it is a single story.
Apropos Trisha
Though Trisha has done many films and is not a new entrant to the industry, she looks very fresh in Sarvam. Perhaps, it is because of a co-star like Arya. Both Trisha and Arya are tall and good looking. When Arya looks at a girl, that girl should not have looked at him and vice versa. The pair had to be new and fresh. Their chemistry has worked out very well. Trisha has an interesting quality that comes along as her tagline. She has an innocent smile irrespective of her mischievousness which was very essential for this character.
On JD Chakravarthy and Indrajeet
I did not know how the character of JD Chakravarthy will behave and needed a fresh mood for this role. JD was there a few years back but he is into direction these days. He is an unpredictable actor whom we have forgotten. Same thing is with Indrajeet. He plays a software guy as he has a clean, soft look about him whereas JD looks very raw and rough and he plays a football coach. The entire casting was done based on these factors.
How was Rohan?
Rohan can be called as the new kid on the block. We tested around 100-150 boys for more than eight months and discovered him. He is not handsome but there is something very cute about him. He has a tooth in the front and wears spectacles. I did not tell him to act in a particular format because I did not desire that kind of response. I just needed a kid and let him be himself. I have incorporated his walk, body language and his natural self in the role and it has shaped up very well.
Special character Bruce
There is someone called Bruce who is also just himself like the other roles. I had to shoot whatever he does as he is very difficult to handle. HE IS A DOG. This particular breed of dog is banned in many countries because it is very dangerous and ferocious. I approached the trainer who worked with elephants in Jodha Akbar and asked for the most ferocious Rottweiler breed. The trainer was shocked and apprehensive as not many films have been shot with Rottweilers. ‘Oman’ and ‘Breed’ had this breed. Generally, they are uncontrollable and are ‘one master’ types though sometimes they attack their masters too. He was the toughest to handle. He had to be with JD and was with him for four months. He used to come to office, hang around to get used to us. Despite this, he had many mood swings and would not shoot if he does not like the location. Finally, we managed to shoot whatever he did. If I had given him instructions, he would have ripped me apart.
Specialty of Sarvam
It is very fresh and the base is very strong which is sure to work out. The narrative pattern is the singular special feature of Sarvam, the way it is shot and the way it is narrated. It does not resemble any of my previous films one bit. It is a much better film than Billa because Billa was just a making and Sarvam is beyond making. You would have noticed that from the trailer. I have introduced another boy called Wasim. They all are so natural that you tend to forget that it is cinema.
How was Arya’s transition from Naan Kadavul to Sarvam?
Oh, yeah. Naan Kadavul was a lengthy process where Arya had forgotten the real him. He came to Sarvam shoot the very next day after wrapping up Naan Kadavul and there was not even a discussion. We were all waiting for him with scissors. Initially, when I described about the scene and dialogues, he was very quiet and did not respond. It is difficult for an immediate and total transformation. I realized his problem and called him aside, told him he is an actor and cannot be like this. But he was fantastic in the next half an hour. The reason for this is I know him very well and know how to use him. He is a director’s man. Arya is the only actor who does not carry an image on his back. When there is no image, it is easy to handle and mould him. I wrote his dialogues based on his behavior and told him it is he who is playing the role and not anybody. That did the trick and he started opening up. My unit is a young one and the shoot is always like picnic spot. As he had already worked with me in two films, he slowly got back to his home turf and things became normal. It is quite a transformation for Arya and a swift one at that. According to me, an actor should switch moods at the snap of a finger. I don’t believe in method acting. Mohanlal is the best example and his transformation when the camera starts rolling is amazing.
Arya continues to feature in your films. Any special reasons?
Very simple! He is my best friend and we gel well. More than anything, he trusts me immensely. When someone has so much of faith, our responsibility increases. As I had said earlier, he does not have an image and can be styled in any way. He is like strong clay and will be sturdy in any form we give him. I am very comfortable working with him. As it is, I have worked with a few artistes like Ajith sir, Arya and Bharath. The main reason is – I am very much at ease working with Arya.
Sarvam initially had Suriya in the lead. Now it has Arya. Did the script change accordingly as well?
No, the script did not change. There are a few similarities between Arya and Suriya. Both of them are handsome, they can be very charming and rough at the same time. Personally, I know Arya has a remarkable energy and can carry off the post interval in Sarvam as he has to look rough in that session. This suited me as a director. Initially, there were many reasons why the film never took off. Again, it was fated not to happen then but now.
Yuvan’s music
Yuvan’s music is the pillar to Sarvam. There is always a healthy competition between us, whether his music is better or my direction is better. Yuvan and I are schoolmates. He used to take me home and play his tunes. And I used to promise him that if I become a director, he will be my music director. He has always been giving good audio to me. The advantage of Sarvam’s audio postponement has resulted in better reach. The best part is when the film was conceptualized with just my technical crew in place, even before Suriya and Arya; Yuvan had given me two tracks. And I have used them now in Sarvam and still they are fresh. They are Needane and Suttal Suriyane. Yuvan’s melodies have better recall value and I don’t control him and let him score music the way he wants. I want him to feel happy about his music first. In fact Yuvan himself has dismissed a couple of his tunes and came out with much better stuff. He need not have done this and could have simply given any tunes. But he is not like that.
Nirav Shah’s cinematography
My team of Nirav, Sreekar Prasad (editor), my wife Anu (costume designer) and my stunt master has been working together for ages and we all have a good understanding. Even when the film does not do well, we carry on with our friendship and remain happy. We are like a group of friends playing gully cricket. We will remain friends unmindful of the game’s results. When it comes to Nirav’s work, people say Billa was good but I feel Pattiyal was his best and now it is Sarvam which is a completely a different trip. It was easy for me to tell Nirav that I wanted two different moods and looks in Sarvam. The planning with him was fantastic in terms of toning and the hunt for locations. The second half will have concrete jungle, cool mist, greenery, and fog. Billa had one tone but Sarvam has many shades. Nirav has done a great job especially in songs. Till date I have never seen the songs of any films so many times. But Sarvam is my favorite album. I have seen the songs innumerable times for the way it is shot.
Editor Sreekar Prasad
Sarvam’s key part is its narrative structure and Sreekar Prasad has played major role in it. I can say Sarvam is Nirav’s and Sreekar’s film.
Art director Manu Jagadh
I am bringing in a new art director Manu from Malayalam who has done many films with Sabu Cyril. This is his first Tamil film. He has done a remarkable job in the art department. My whole film is designed. Throughout the film, we have used wall papers in hospitals, in houses and for an entire song for the style in art direction. He has erected a huge 80-feet church, 200 year old in the middle of a jungle where we have shot in rain and mist. And it was a full night shoot for seven days. That church was fabulous and it was my last reel. We had made its interiors in Chennai. Manu Jagadh’s work was mind-blowing.
In Billa, the predominant color concept was black and white. What is the scheme in Sarvam?
Billa was designed in a different way and Sarvam in another fashion. We had a splash of colors in the first half and the second half had a specific tone. You will have a chilled out feel in the second half. The audience may feel it is a different film due to the tone, locations, costumes and the way it is shot. There is no monotone in costumes and there will be splash of colors in Sarvam.
Has Billa’s success put some kind of pressure on you?
I don’t take any pressures. If I start considering all the feedbacks that I received post-Billa seriously, I would have been caught in a trap. Personally, I should get excited about a particular project and I try my best not to get repetitive. There should be some difference in shade in my films. So I concentrate on my work rather than the pressures to perform.
What did the original Billa – Rajnikanth say after seeing the film?
We met many times after its trailer and after the film’s release. The superstar was kicked about it. There was a general curiosity about Billa to know how it was made. After he saw the trailer, I was called in Saravanan sir’s office by Rajnikanth. He immediately started off in his typical racy way of speech. Though I did not understand every bit, I could make out he was appreciating the film. He was too excited. After he saw the film, he called me to his room and had an animated conversation for 45 minutes. He was on a nostalgic trip recalling special incidents during the original Billa shoot. He just talked and I just listened.
All your movies have been a quick start to finish projects. Do you think Sarvam was one movie which took a long time to get released?
Yes. It was delayed for quite a while. More than making a film, doing business afterwards is a mammoth task today. The timing now is not too good. There is a financial crisis everywhere. And there is IPL, elections and so on. The situation is so chaotic. We have made the film and the producers, distributors and everyone are happy and excited and now something else crops up. It is a win-win situation for all. I cannot relax saying I have made the film and have succeeded. Everyone should feel happy. Hence the timing is important. I am not competing with anyone here. There were some problems with regard to dates as some theatres were said to screen the IPL matches. When I have made a good film, I did not want to release it hastily at a wrong time.
Will you be directing your brother?
My brother is already launched and I have told him I will be doing a project with him soon. I don’t know when and what type of project it will be. I could not launch him because I was doing Billa then.
Any particular artiste that you would like to direct?
There is no one specific like that. I have always wanted to do a Telugu film and I am doing one now. If it turns out interesting, it could even be a bilingual.
Will you be working with Ajith again?
We have plans. We basically should have fun together. That’s important. Our dates should work out. If everything falls in place, we will be teaming up again.
Your favorite directors?
I like many from the old bunch to the new crop. There are many. My favorite directors are Mahendran, Sathyajith Ray, Akira Kurasowa. Today, the style is different and trendy. I like Gautham’s work.
Recent films you liked…
I liked Paruthi Veeran and Anjaathe. They were fresh and they attempted some thing new. The efforts were new. I like to watch Ameer’s films. I generally watch all films
In your opinion, how is Tamil cinema today?
On one side, it is healthy. There are a lot of new people and more such new entrants should come. The fixed pattern of functioning should be broken and I think it is happening with the entry of many new directors. It is a new phase now. Situations here and there are a bit sad and I am sure it will stabilize and go on track soon mainly on the financial side.
As director Vishnuvardhan, how do you want to be known as after a few years?
I don’t go with a plan like that. I just go with a flow. I may grow with my films and vice versa. I have a level of mental maturity today. Tomorrow, it may grow or abscond totally. I don’t know. As I grow, perhaps the maturity in the content of my film may grow. That’s how I see it. From my first film to Sarvam, I feel there is little growth if not enormous in my work. Perhaps, if I stay focused, it may slowly blossom.

Sarvvam big in advance booking!
By Moviebuzz | Thursday, 14 May , 2009, 09:12
Ayngaran International looks to have a hit in their hands. Their Vishnu Vardhan directed, Arya-Trisha starrer Sarvvam releasing on Friday (May 15) worldwide, is strong on advance booking.
It is opening in 10 Chennai screens, and there is a buzz around it among the youth audiences.
At Sathyam Cinemas, Inox, Abirami and Sangam, 90 percent of the tickets have been sold out for the weekend. In Ambattur Rakki, the advance booking is so good, that they have opened one more screen at the multiplex for the film.
Maayajal on ECR is planning to screen atleast 30 shows per day in the opening week.
The curiosity around Sarvvam is its biggest USP across Tamilnadu and rest of the world. Now that the elections in the state are over, people want to chill out to escape the summer heat and enjoy.
And Sarvvam according to people who watched the film is a class apart, which will appeal to upper middle class multiplex audiences.
Any which way you look, the film will take a big opening as it is the Billa director’s next release!

negative reviews already.
i think he has set a high bar for his movies, and most people tend to get disappointed no matter how good the movie is. they are always going to compare it with his earlier movies....
inga periya screen-la release aagala.. just goes to show how important heroes are.

First half an hour or so it is so incredibly dull. Nothing works, characters, acting, dialogues, scenes, Yuvan singing. shabbA ! As the movie progressed it was the mild heckling from the audience that kept it going.

Not like that. I feel he is not a fluent actor. I liked him in AA and to and in Pattiyal too (recently saw Pattiyal again). Oram Po too. He is not bad here. Quite annoying in the first half. Superficial characterization appidi. Second half - action/thirilling etc. he is better. Basically it is VV who has goofed up.

No impact, either positive or negative. A couple of songs. A few attempt-to-look-cute scenes. Not much impact. And then excuses herself from the action portions of the movie.

just now back from sarvam...am totallly disappointed...first half semma mokkai esp the dialoques irritates. second half was slightly better but only slightly...aarya's acting was very amateur at times trisha had nothing much but looked gorgeous thanks to nirav and costume designer....yuvan's background first half semma opaethal ...illayaraja bit vachikittae opaethitaar but second half its yuvan' nirav show all the way...phenomenal work....the problem with the movie is the movie lacked any substance...just when we start imagining the story will be something very different ...vishnu till the end goes with a very simple story without any substance...two big pluses for the movie is yuvan and nirav...esp nirav some stunning works....neethane and kaatrukulai both picturised superbly.but again the timing of these songs except the first song adada va made ppl even more restless....on the whole i didn like the movie...but if anyone out there wants to see some stunning cinematography and camera works u can watch it once..sarvam-damp squib

i thought the way 2nd half turned out quiet well. It maybe that i got flattered by nirav shah n yuvan's music. There was a twist missing. The story may not be strong bt surley was better than some of the latest movies out in the cinemas rite now. Plus i didnt have any expectations apart from nirav n yuvan.

In an interview to Kalaignar TV in Feb/Mar... Vishnu Vardhan thanked Ayngaran for coming forward to produce this movie. He said he went to producers with the story but all of them rejected it due to fear of whether it would be accepted by the people.
Really pity Ayngaran. Good that they left Robot before they feel the pressure strangling their necks. Now they will think a lot before producing movies.
Ok, coming to the point, is the 2nd half anything like what we expected, out of the world, never before shown (at least some new idea?) in Tamil cinema? (that was what was hyped about before its release, esp in the trailer)

Watched the film!
Seriously, I liked the film, just liked, nothing more and nothing less. It is definitely not a masterpiece or something extraordinary, it is good. I didn't found it bad or mokkai, this is definitely Ayngaran's best production till date. (
) It's just something very different from VV, we wouldn't have expected, especially after Billa! I don't think it's a pointless film, somehow the film affected me even as I have experienced something similar, too. (Similar, but different
) But guys, this is a different attempt than the usual masala Tamil films, though it is perhaps adapted from a Hollywood film. (I haven't watched 21 Grams, but it's comparable to Amores perros) And at least for the technical aspects, you have to watch the film. What a show of Nirav Shah! The songs are picturized amazingly as well, in particular "Kaatrukulle". And music by Yuvan is really great, though, I think, Nirav Shah overshadows him. And Trisha this time has indeed somthing to do in the film and she really looks stunning. (Thanks to Nirav?
) Story is good, but VV has to work on screenwriting. 2nd half is a bit too lenghty and speed and action konjam kammi. You mustn't expect too much or something spectacular, then you might enjoy the film.
I wished, someone else would write a story and its screenplay and VV would just direct it. With the help of this crew, he could bring us great cinema.

Adhu than, he has proved, that he can remake, he can direct, but he cannot write. (You forgot Kurumbu, a remake as well) He needs a good base, on which he can build the building. He seemingly couldn't create that base on his own (Is Arinthum Ariyamalum original?) So, someone else should write story and screenplay (originally, just for VV!), and he should just concentrate on directing. I believe, he is a good director, but a bad screenwriter! I don't see any copying in such a process.

Tribute as arya happens to be a IR fan in this film.

Thanks to the IPL finale, this weekend raked in the weakest collection of the year. A few single screens in Chennai had a dismal 20 to 30 per cent collection.
Vishnu Vardhan’s Sarvvam, which got mixed reviews, is strong at the box office. It has already got a share of Rs 11.25 lakh from Sathyam Cinemas in 10 days and is the number one.
Sarvvam
Cast: Arya, Trisha, JD Chakravarthy, Indrajeet, Rohan
Director: Vishnu Vardhan
+ Nirav Shah’s splendid camera and Yuvan’s music & BGM
- A slow second half
BO verdict : Good opening

Sarvam
Vishnuvardhan officially takes over from Hari & Perarasu
case in point: Arya is attacked by men with knives and get slit in the stomach. we are shown a scene where poison from a snake has been rubbed on the knife previously. later, arya faints a few times. just to ensure that we the audience dont forget it, the snake scene is repeated - about 4-5 times.
cliche: arya and child running away from the villain in a jungle. they hide below a ledge with the villain above them looking around. what do you think happens next? yes, a snake appears where arya is hiding.
Best award for unable-to-act goes to Arya
case in point: the scene when his GF is admitted to hospital and dies. hwo does he act? supposed to be like a guy losing his mind... but his portrayal? like a guy who has failed his exams.
and to think Bala chose this guy for NK.
Best thing about Sarvam: Yuvan Shankar Raja
amazing BGM and fanatatsic songs.
But the sucking up to Ilaiyaraja
come on guys, dont make it so obvious.
2nd Best thing: The cinematograhy... this one makes the cinema experience worthwhile... yeah, really!
3rd Best thing: The song picturisation.
Do you want to see Sarvam? OK, if you are really really bored.

arghhhh.........enna madhiri scene idhu (Maddy in AS style)........i completely agree with NOV that directors of today are just snuggling upto raaja's old compositions to draw extra whistles in theaters.......chennai-28 was ok, subbipuram was tolerable but i heard pasanga and sarvvam are pathetic in this iR songs usage.........technically, "enna thappu" nnu 4 peru ketkalam but i feel irritated with such spineless stunts.......
//dig// i was in coffee day the other day for a school reunion meeting.........one of my frnds casually commented in front of me "we are talking abt techies like Raaja not managers like rahman"
......then start meesic dhaan......i mean, this is a very popular arguement amongst tamilians......but it needs sensitive handling and smarter situations......SJ.Surya's heroines in his 1st 2 movies(vaali and Khushi) were ARR fans (in movie, ofcourse)
.......thats the level of sophistication we want to see when we talk abt ARR or IR fans in movies...... :P//end dig//
