Hi everbody!

Many movies have been released this year.However, very few movies have become hits.

Last year, at this time, there were alreadt two blockbusters, Thirupachi and Chandramuki. However, this year seems very unlucky for tamil films.

Use this thread to discuss on what u feel about Kollywood 2006.

No Ajith/VJ fights please!

This year, my favourite movies are Pattiyal and Dishoom

Worst in recent years
2003 had Saamy and Dhool raking in..2004 had Gilli breaking all previous records..2005 had Chandramukhi taking business to new heights and Thirupaachi cracklig amidst Tsunami ruins and floods
This year Not even a single block-buster or even a super hit

YA! Thats true! This year is so sad! Many movies were flopping and we all though April 14 movies would break the trend. In the end, Tirupathi was only an 'above average' movie.

If JEOK and Godfather flop, it could mean that 2006 is unlucky for Kollywood!

132 days of 2006 (up to May 12) there were 32 Tamil releases and among them "Pattiyal", "Chithirem Pesuthadi" and "Tiruttu Payale" are hits and four- "Paramasivan", "Kalvanin Kathali", "Dishyum" and "Thambi" turning out to be average grossers. Though there were no blockbusters, this is a decent report card.
The emerging trend is that small movies in the Rs 3 to 4 Crore budget with good content are doing well at the box-office and stale formula movies packaged with superstars and gimmicks like Aathi and Tirupati bombed miserably. The message is clear that superstars alone cannot make a film run, good story and presentation are also required to bring in the audience.

Music continues to play an important role in the success of Tamil movies, as proved by the Ganna Ulganathan song "Vala Meenukkum…" from " Chithirem Pesuthadi" that was picturised in an innovative manner and popularized on channels. And the trade feels that if the songs from "Pattiyal" and "Tiruttu Payale" were shown on channels they would have done better business.

The new mantra among film makers is to give something innovative to the audience and strictly adhering to the budget constraints.

Overall this year has been quite dull with only 1 or 2 super hits, Others were either average hits or flops. Last year there was 4 blockbusters.

But we cannot say anything now coz the big star's movies are still to come. JOE, Bheema, Godfather,Vijay's new, kamals new? I don't think shivaji is gonna be released this year.

A decent run so far I should say. Though there are no blockbusters as yet, there were no BO disasters,with the exception of AADHI. I think the 2nd half will be even more intreresting. Godfather should be the 1st blockbuster of the year. Other movies that are expected to run well are VV, PP, JOK...

The starting could have been made with some troubles. But it didn't lead to the death of Tamil Cinema.

Regarding PP & JOK, I want to keep my fingers crossed. I mean.. I am not sure how people are gonna react to PP.. and I am clueless how different JOK will be.

definately one of the worst years! i really got into tamil films when , dhool, dhil, saamy, thirumalai, kadhal kondein, jeyam, boys, etc released....thats when i got well itrested...but i was still a vj lover b4. and then kollywood had loads of gd films....but now its getting borin...and no big hits....

I dunno why some people think 2006 has been a good year. There has not been a single proper superhit yet. Some internet sites have stated that Pattiyal and Tirupathi are the best movies so far. Pattiyal was the only movie which has everything good about it including music and direction. Tirupathi's only hope is Ajith's dashing and amazing performance.

Why 2006 so unlucky? If people still say that 2006 is a good year, it means they are contradicting themselves despite the fact that it is their personal opinion. This is my personal commenting on the films this year.

This personal opinion is purely personal and doesn't aim to insult anyone:

Dishoom : Good story and good acting from artists. Slightly lengthy movie

Paramasivan: Very good plot and dazzling performance from Ajith. Too lengthy

Aadhi: I hated this movie. It had a very stereotypical story. But the songs were superb.

Saravana: An above average movie. Comical movie. Good songs

Chiteram Paesuthadi: Good movie...good song...nice story..good acting from Bhavana

Thambi: Good story....MEGA SUPER ACTING from Maddy...

Kovai Brothers: VERy funny! Good movie for Comedy lovers

Idaya Thirudan: Personally, I enjoyed this movie and I dunno why it flopped. It was very humourous and Prakasraj made it do enjoable

Pattiyal: The MOVIE OF THE YEAR SO FAR! Very good story. Stunning performance by Arya and Bharath. Namma Kaatule with Illayaraja-Yuvan Shankar Raja combo!

Tiruttu Payalae: Hopeless movie...I wasted money

Tirupathi: I have too many words to describe this movie and I don't want to provoke anyone . Anyway, I would have demmanded for a theatre refund if it wasn't for Ajith's performance

Kalaba Kadhaln: Unimpressive story:....good performance by Arya

Kalvanin Kadhali: The only thing I liked about this movie was the comedy. SJ Surya - Vivek jokes were funny!

These are the main movies I watched this year and I have Personally commented on them. I hope I have not offended anyone!

oh...exams starting on monday....i cant choose right now....because for english...we get 30 mins to write 2 sides of a page for story writting.....and they will give the title or topic

I think the one and only reason behind the failure of Saravana is

Simbu - Jyo pair.. Jyo looked like his aunty.

Whenever I saw intimate scenes between the two, IT REMINDS ME OF SOME KERALA FILM (Name of which I don't want to reveal )

esp.. in that "uNNoda puRusaNaaGa veLai pottu kodu eNakku" song Height of incest element..

I read the story of Pokiri. nOthin new, same old story & also there is no scope for the heroine, but illena was looking hot in the movie I guess. Asin doesn't fall in the same category. Wonder why Asin has accepted this film, she should've done JOK.

Yeah Asin is one over hyped actress. She imitates revathy in most of the scenes. The only gud thing abt her is that she lends her own voice in all of her movies. Thats it.

AP International has set up an impressive lounge at the festival showcasing fine vignettes from South Indian cinema. Arjundas Wadhwa, one of the partners of AP, quite excited about the venture, claims that Tamil films have a huge potential globally. He rattles off facts to prove his point.

Tamil films throughout the year

Our industry has remained confined to the state and some Tamil-speaking pockets abroad like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and the Gulf countries. As the economy opened up and more and more Tamilians moved abroad, they took along their passion for Tamil films. No wonder today there is a demand for latest films in areas as far away as Japan, Denmark and Ireland.

Cashing in on this spurt, big players like AP have acquired or tied up with exhibitors in these areas. Their idea is to cater to the growing demand by screening Tamil films throughout the year. It would also help in streamlining availability of films if there is a consistent schedule of screening.

Evergreen appeal of Superstar Rajinikanth

The most popular film of the past year was no doubt, ‘Chandramukhi’, which raked in about 2.5 million dollars and was much in demand in hitherto unknown areas like South Africa, Turkey, Switzerland and Germany. This once again proves the evergreen appeal of Superstar Rajinikanth. According to Wadhwa, the biggest star in India is none other than Rajinikanth, the lead actor of Chandramukhi. “He charges Rs.20 crore a film and yet his box office power is such that producers have no issues with what he charges,” he says.

Rajinikanth has a remarkable screen presence and the reasons for his popularity are not difficult to understand

Besides, his films always carry a humanistic and universal touch and a large dose of sentiment without melodrama.

For audiences living miles away from friends and relatives, nothing would be more welcome than a popular commercial movie which speaks their lingo to connect to their roots. Oh, how could we forget, the music! All the songs in Rajini’s movies are invariably foot-tapping numbers which lighten the pain of separation. Since the days of ‘Muthu’ a decade ago, Rajini’s films have been steadily showing a rise even in unconventional markets like Japan and Hong Kong.

Anniyan’s amazing business

Wadhwa also says that the past year’s other big grosser, ‘Anniyan’ did business worth 2 million dollars. The overseas rights include theatres, home videos, television and audio. Hence, it is a recurring return. He also said that films got much wider coverage now than before and could be marketed easily. Thanks to Internet. Therefore, people abroad wanted to watch a film as soon as it was released. Hence, there was scope for exploring the pastures across the seas.

AP International to distribute ‘Sivaji’

The growing popularity abroad of the crossover films has made Sivaji Productions enter this genre with a film titled Delhi Heights. This film has received good response thanks to the presence of some heavyweight names.

The next film on AP International’s overseas offering is, predictably, another Rajnikanth starrer – ‘Sivaji’.

Being peddled as the most expensive film ever made in India, it is scheduled for release in 2007. The film is being made under the AVM banner, one of the oldest and most respected film companies in Tamil Nadu.

The global heroes

All in all it is great to learn that at last, Tamil films are not only entertaining but also make good business sense. Right now only the big names like Rajinikanth, Manirathnam, Kamal Hassan, Vikram and Vijay help increase the rate of returns for the producers. If the quality of our films becomes better, it would be possible to find niche audiences for them as well. Anyone listening?

Sivaji is not even scheduled for release in 2006.Its tentatively scheduled for Pongal 2007.

i watched jithan ramesh's jerry yesterday, it was entertaining and had good comedy. . It is a change from the violent and gangster films, good film to watch.

Tamil Cinema: The year so far

It hasn't been a bad year for Tamil films so far, but not a great one either. There have been no super hits like Chandramukhi, for one. The heartening thing is many small films have worked at the box office, although not all have been path breaking. 2006 has, to date, given us six months of gangster films.

Pudupettai
The one that was the most talked about was Selvaraghvan's Pudupettai. No other film in 2006 had such a bumper opening, and it was not fans of Dhanush who made this possible, but fans of director Selvaraghavan. Still, the film is not as huge a hit as his earlier Kadal Kondein or 7 G Rainbow Colony.

The biggest compliment Pudupettai got was from Cameron Bailey, Film Programmer for the Toronto Film Festival. He showered it with praise, although most residents of Tamil Nadu felt it had an overdose of blood and violence.

Pattiyal

Even Vishnuvardhan, the young director of Pattiyal, may not have expected such a response.
The film is about two orphans living on the streets of Chennai and becoming part of the city's underworld. Arya, with his rugged looks, won lots of applause in the first part, but Bharath as the deaf and dumb character hogged the limelight in the last 20 minutes.

With Pattiyal, Vishnuvardhan, who writes his own scripts, has become one of the hottest directors in Tamil cinema.

Thiruttu Payale

This was the litmus test for Susie Ganesan, one of Mani Ratnam's former assistants.
His earlier films, Virumbugiren and Five Star, were moderate successes at the box office but were appreciated by critics and award committees. As a filmmaker, he can also take pride in the fact that both films were radically different from each other.

His recent Thiruttu Payale is even more different and daring. And its success shows that a new story told in a novel way can definitely work at the box office.

Chithiram Pesuthadi
When Chithiram Pesuthadi, with new faces Narain and Bhavana (though they are established names in Malayalam) was first released, there was no one to watch it in theatres. It was withdrawn after a week. Producer-distributor Oscar Ravichandran happened to see it though, and recognised its immense potential. He re-released it with a lot of publicity, and the film became a huge success.
The 'gana' song Vaala Meenukum by Gana Ulaganathan became a cult song in Tamil Nadu and the singer, a rage. Bhavana became the new hot entrant from Kerala after Asin and Nayanthara. The filmmaker Mishkin -- who, until now, worked in a bookstore -- has suddenly become a filmmaker to reckon with.

Thalainagaram

The only thing said of Thalainagaram when it was first released was that the film had successful director (and Khushboo's husband) Sundar C as the hero. The heroine was Jyothirmayi from Kerala, not at all hot property in Tamil cinema. It was also another underworld story.
And yet, Sundar C's performance was a surprise. What could have worked in its favour are the film's hilarious dialogues, written by its director Suraj. Until now, Suraj was known for the funny dialogues he had given all films directed by Sundar C.
