Livingston, "uruvangala vera madhiri padacha aandavan, unarchigala mattum ore madhiri kuduthuttane" (something like this)
I liked Dishyum too & it had good songs. But Roja kootam is a waste movie.
So far he has done just 3 films in 10 yrs.

Incidentally he had good scripts and directors but he never utilized them. A few being his rojakootam, parthiban kanavu and kana kandein. He was taken aside in all these movies by the respective supporting actors bhumika, sneha and prithviraj.

Poo: Lives in dark that make lights of joy
September12, 2008
The audio release function of the movie Poo was held today at Sathyam Cineplex in the presence of a host of film personalities. Being co-produced by Moser Baer and director Sasi (Dishyum fame), Poo tells the story of thousands of children whose lives, dreams and rights to a good childhood are lost in the dark factories of Sivakasi, making crackers. Poo will star Srikanth, the rest of the cast consists of new faces
.
At the function, the audio CD was released and a special screening of three songs was held for the guests. Out of these, two were highly appreciated by the audience. ‘Choo Choo Maari’ was reminiscent of games children play and was a refreshing song to listen to. It gives out the vibes of a hit and is likely to be very popular as a ring tone in the near future. The other song, ‘Aavaram Poo’, penned by Na. Muthukumar and picturised on debutante heroine Parvathi was also special. The song attempts to take the story forward along with it and the heroine’s performance in the song suggests that we can expect a noteworthy debut. Also, debut composer S.S.Kumaran has done a job that will make people expect more out of him in future. The visuals that are pleasing to the eye have been caught on camera by yet another debutante Muthaiah.
Celebrities present at the function include directors Balu Mahendra, Ameer, Vasanth, Balaji Shakthivel, Subramaniam Siva, Lingusaamy, and actors Jeeva and Jeyam Ravi. The function was also attended by Producer’s Council Secretary LMM Muralidaran. Dhananjayan from Moser Baer delivered the welcome address and director Sasi thanked everyone present for their support.

'Poo' is a movie for heart and soul: Sasi
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, September 24, 2008]
Director Sasi is busy giving his best to shape up ‘Poo’. The movie starring Srikanth and Malluwood girl Parvathy, produced by Moserbaer, is fast nearing completion.
In a quick chat, Sasi, who left his indelible mark in Tamil cinema with movies like ‘Rojakootam’, ‘Sollamale’ and ‘Dishoom’, says, 'Poo is inspired by writer Subha Tamilselvan's Veyyilodu Poi. It captures the heart and soul of the rustic life in a rural village in Rajapalayam. ‘Poo’ will bring the feeling of reading the novel'.
On his star cast, Sasi says, 'I share a good rapport with Srikanth since his ‘Rojakootam’ days. I still wonder what is preventing the actor from making it big on cinema. Parvathi has a great passion for cinema. Her dedication to excel in the role was amazing'.
On a big gap after ‘Dishoom’, Sasi says, 'I am slow to start with. Once I conceive a storyline, I start to work with utmost sincerity. Close on the heels of completing ‘Poo’, I would start a movie which would be a commercial entertainer loaded with action all through'.

'Poo' gets a clean U
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, November 22, 2008]
'Poo' directed by Sasi and produced by Moser Baer in association with Nesagee Cinemas will be releasing on the 28th of November. The Censor Board of Film Certification has cleared the film with the tag U (for Universal audiences).
The film shot in a rustic background stars Srikanth and Parvathy. Based on the short story 'Veyyilodu Poi', the film is expected to contain a heart warming story. Sasi who has churned out 'Sollamale', Rojakootam' and 'Dishyum' earlier, has a penchant for realistic human emotions.
Poo's music album by S. S. Kumaran has already become popular with its mellifluous tunes oozing with the 'native feel'.
'Poo' sure has all the makings of a healthy entertainer with abundance of realism packed in it. Something audiences would love.

Poo is poetic – Movie Review
Starring: Srikanth, Parvathi
Direction: Sasi
Music: S S Kumaran
Production: Moserbaer, Nesagee Cinema
“Simplicity is the glory of expression,” said Walt Whitman, and Poo may be one of the best elucidators of this quote. It is beautiful without being complicated, moving without being disturbing and mellow without being mushy. Poo is about love, relations, dreams and sacrifices.
It is difficult to reveal any aspect of the plot of the movie because that might amount to disservice to a carefully crafted work of art. This is not to say that Poo is art-house cinema, it instead treats cinema at a different level where there is neither an antagonist nor a protagonist and only the inscrutable ways of destiny determine the fate of characters who remain so true to the story without even an element of cinematic liberty being thrown in. It seems to be a true interpretation of what Shakespeare so famously said, “All the world’s a stage and all men and women are the players.”
Poo is set in the rustic surroundings of Rajapalayam where life is simple and slow and ambitions are limited. It tells the story of two young children, a boy and a girl, their families and their dreams in life. What happens when dreams clash? Someone has to let go of their dream for the others to realize theirs’. It is one person’s love and affection for the other that makes them sacrifice hoping sincerely that the object of their love will have a better life sharing someone else’s dream. It is also “love” that makes people give up their own dreams and believe in someone
else, trusting them with their life. But when sacrifices go in vain and life of the loved one looks far from the bed of roses that had been envisaged, then it is a kind of helplessness that engulfs the mind and one is left to live only in sorrow, grieving the dream that was never to be.
Poo is a movie that has given some budding actors a wonderful opportunity to set foot in the industry and they have done it with élan. Parvathy, the debut heroine has done a marvelous job, not at all showing any signs of inexperience. She excels in all kinds of expressions and an interesting thing is that at times one can detect traces of Padmapriya. Parvathy will definitely be a strong contender for the best debut award this year. Srikanth is on screen after a long time and appears in a role that is not the regular hero type. First, congrats to him for making the choice. He is adequate without being excellent, fitting neatly into the character. But the one who steals the show is the actor who plays Srikanth’s father, he is splendid and one to look out for in similar roles in future. The Rajapalayam accent has been adapted to near perfection throughout the movie. Poo is devoid of any commercial element. There are a few scenes here and there with situational humor that do not fail to amuse. The emotional scenes are the best. Made to near perfection, they will move even the most passive viewer close to tears, especially the climatic scenes. The movie has content that is enough just for a short story and has been narrated fluently on screen.
Then there are stars behind the camera. Cinematographer P.G. Muthiah has done a wonderful job, translating all the rural charm onto screen. Veerasamar has matched the camera with his art. One is left wondering whether the huts are sets or real ones. Debutant composer S.S. Kumaran deserves accolades for his score and re-recording. Three songs, Maman, Aavaram Poo and Choo Choo Maari stand out as excellent compositions. But the one man who deserves an ovation here is director Sasi. This must be his best work to date. Handling the story, screenplay, dialogue and direction, he has given a product that will please all true lovers of cinema. He must also be credited with extracting moving performances from the cast.
Overall, Poo is like a beautiful poem. Poetry is not everyone’s cup of tea and one is not sure how many will be able to appreciate this subtly narrated story of dreams and sacrifices. It is a sincere wish that Poo does well, Tamil cinema will be better off with the success of a movie like Poo. But one finds it hard to see how the movie will achieve commercial success, given its simple yet beautiful narration.
As the saying goes, “Simplicity is nature’s first step and the last of art.”
Verdict - Poo – Poetic

Poo
By Moviebuzz
What strikes you most after watching Poo is the simplicity of the story with characters and their motivations intricately etched out by the director. It is a portrait of life in a small village and an honest exploration of human emotions. With Poo, director Sasi proves that a simple plot with interesting characters is all it takes to engage an audience. It is a placid film which is not plot-driven but centred on the emotional journey of its characters.
The film belongs to debutant Parvathy, she holds the film together and is mesmeric. Sasi's script is an adaptation of writer Tamil Chelvan's short story Veyilodu Poy. He succeeds largely because he has been more or less faithful to the original, other than using cinematic liberties like songs.
The story is set in a village somewhere between Rajapalayam and Sivakasi in south Tamilnadu. It is all about the selfless deep love and admiration that Mari (Parvathy) develops for her cousin Thankaras (Srikanth) from childhood. Mari is a bold village girl whose world revolves around her beloved Thankaras .While at school, she does not hesitate to tell her teacher who questions all kids on what their ambition in life is, and that for her, it is to "be the wife of Thankaras"!
Her best friend and conscience keeper is Cheeni (Inbanila), a practical girl who works with her at the fireworks factory. She urges Mari to express her love for Thankaras who is now an Engineer, thanks to the hard work of his father Penakaran (Ramu) a bullock cart driver. The trouble with Mari and her dilemma is that she is obsessed by her cousin and goes great lengths to get across to him but is unable to express her deep love for him. Her inability to open her heart out at the same time hopelessly in love with him leads inevitably to an emotional turbulence.
The humour in the film is not slapstick nor a separate comedy track, but part of the narration. The best examples are the scenes showing why Srikanth’s father decides to buy him a cell phone, the tea-shop owner who is fed up of people in the village who wants to drink tea on credit and the foreman at the cracker factory.
The high point of the film is its characterizations and performances. Much of Sasi's creativity lies in his casting, which is perfect. Parvathy has lived in the role of Mari and takes your breath away as she effortlessly delivers such a difficult role so convincingly on her debut in Tamil. She is consistently credible and lifelike and absolutely riveting.
Srikanth does not have a lengthy role but as Thankaras, silent and dependable he is first class. All the supporting cast are extraordinary like Inbanila who plays Mari's best friend, she invests such sincerity into her role that makes the character a real flesh and blood person by underplaying and subtlety. Ramu the guy who plays Srikanth's father in the film is credible and looks real. The entire supporting cast (all are first-timers) is top class.
Technically, the film is a treat with breathtaking cinematography and correct use of colours (without any DI) by P.G Muthiah in some fresh village locations. S.S Kumaran's music has a refreshing tinge to it, his background score is terrific. On the downside the film could have easily done with fewer songs, which at times is distracting.
But on the whole the movie is a beautiful, complete, moving experience with a nice message. It is a simple love story, a bittersweet tale of human frailties, a small film with a very big heart. Well acted and directed, the film is watchable as gems like these are hard to find these days.
. Verdict: Very Good

From Indiaglitz
"On the whole the film is such a refreshing change from the regular hullabaloo of so-called commercial masala entertainment. 'Poo' would definitely join the ranks of 'Kadhal', 'Azhagi', 'Subramaniapuram' and the like which went on to rake in big money."

aahaa... Padam paarkanum pola irukkae. Interesting to see how they have portrayed Sivakasi, Rajapalayam and the surrounding areas. Most of the guys portraying these areas mix the madurai culture and confuse it as a whole. I am keen to see how they are shown in this film.
Few films that projected these areas well are "Karuvelam pookkal" and Veyyil ( to a certain extent. )

Selva,
I completely agree with the reviewer above. Parvathy comes in for almost 95% of the movie, the story revolves around 'Mari' character only. So it was slow and dragging in many places. It is too poetic in places, I don't think normal crowd will like this movie. This is Director Sasi's first serious film making attempt, so you will not be disappointed if don't expect kAthal/azhagi here. If you have patience and want to see something different from the regular flicks, you can give it a shot. I would rate it sligthly-above-average only.

Realistic storyline impresses
Film review: Poo
Cast: Srikanth, Parvathy, Inbanila, Ramu
Director: Sasi
Rating: * * 1/2
Adapted from Tamizh Selvan’s novel Velayodu Poi, Poo from director Sasi is a narration of a simple story with strong characterisation. When masala films are the order of the day, the director should be lauded for the realistic script without any frills, which narrates the story convincingly. Poo revolves around Mari (Parvathy), a bold village girl from a poor background and the selfless love she has for her cousin Thangarasu (Srikanth).
Set in the rustic backdrop of Rajapalayam, the film opens with Mari, a happily married girl, coming to her village for a temple festival. A flashback reveals the strong love that Mari has for her relative Thangarasu right from childhood. While at school when the teacher asks everyone about their future ambition, Mari proudly says that she would be the wife of Thangarasu. However, a grown-up Mari, who works in a firework factory, keeps her love close to her heart. On the other hand, Thangarasu’s father Penakarar (Ramu), a bullock-cart driver, struggles to earn his livelihood and manages to send his son to an engineering college.
Mari’s close friend Cheeni (Inbanila) advises her to reveal her love for Thangarasu. Mari makes futile attempts to express her love and eventually ends up in emotional turmoil. Circumstances force Thangarasu to marry a rich girl (Sarita Yadhav), daughter of a mill owner. Cut to present, Mari who rushes to see Thangarasu, returns shattered.
The major success of the movie is the apt casting of each and every character by director Sasi. Debutant Parvathy as Mari has lived the role and given a brilliant performance. Be it the delight at seeing her beloved or the inability to express her love or the horror at the sight of her beloved’s pitiable life towards the climax, Parvathy simply excels at expressing emotions. It is an award winning performance from her. The girl who plays young Mari is equally impressive.
Srikanth, who has played a rural youth for the first time, though not in a lengthy role, has performed well. His silence speaks volumes. Inbanila as Mari’s friend has a parallel role and impresses with her realistic portrayal. The other supporting cast including Ramu, Janaki (Mari’s mother), Veera Samar, the tea-shop owner stand out with their natural portrayals. Muthiah’s lens has beautifully captured the essence of the story, frame by frame, and is an absolute visual treat. Newcomer Kumaran’s music is yet another major plus. His background score, especially, needs special mention. On the whole, Poo produced by Nesagee Cinemas and presented by Moserbaer is a film that is worth watching.

Poo: A visual bouquet
Poo’, director Sasi’s cinematic adaptation of S.Tamil Selvan’s classic short story ‘Veyilodu Poy’, is a refreshing experience.
‘Poo’, set in the rustic surroundings of Rajapalayam, revolves around a boy and a girl. It also speaks about their families and their dreams. The girl Mari is very much fond of the boy Thangarasu right from the childhood. The father of the boy, who is a hard worker and a poor man, has a dream to bring up his boy as an engineer to lead a decent life.
Later the boy is sent to Chennai to study engineering and the girl gets a job in the local fireworks factory. Mari’s love for Thangarasu grows stronger with the time. Her love is very simple and natural just like a flower. She is ready to undergo any ordeal for the sake of his beloved Thangarasu.
Mari tries to convey her deep love to Thangarasu but somehow fails to do so. But she is confident that Thangarasu would never ditch her. Thangarasu, though he understands Mari’s love, could not reciprocate her feelings, as he has to make his hard working father happy by marrying a girl of his choice to come up in life. He gives up his love to save his father from ruining himself.
This decision leaves Mari shattered but her pure love doesn’t allow her to be sad. She seeks happiness, finding solace in the thought that if Thangarasu is happy, she too is happy. She swallows her sadness for the sake of her lover’s well being. But life has other plans because of which Mari finds herself in a deeper sorrow.
The strength of the movie is its simplicity and poetic portrayal. Director Sasi has successfully told the story without resorting to any kind of gimmicks. He has come out with a credible and realistic screenplay. He has also etched out the characters quite well, paying adequate attention to insignificant characters too. The character of Thangarasu’s father looks like one out of a well-written literary work.
Sasi’s visual sense is amazing. A particular shot that captures together the dejected Mari shedding tears sitting inside the semi dark room and her mother shouting at his brother (who’s standing outside) for his betrayal deserves mention. The scene in which Mari meets her goat after a long time is poetic. The childhood incidents and Mari’s friendship with another girl are well portrayed.
The way the director has used the landscape with the help of the cinematographer P.G.Muthiah is noteworthy. Sasi, who has penned some sharp, sensitive, and realistic dialogues, makes effective use of silence too.
Parvathy, a new entrant to Tamil, is a revelation. She has been given a meaty role she handles it with élan. Her varied expressions, her dialogue delivery and body language are quite commendable. The performance is sure to receive a few awards.
Srikanth deserves appreciation for accepting to act in a heroine-oriented movie. He adds value to the role by underplaying his role and willingly playing second fiddle to the protagonist.
Cinematographer P.G.Muthiah has brought the rural charm onto screen with natural colours and aesthetically-shot sequences. Veerasamar’s art work has ably complemented the efforts of the camera and the director. Debutant composer S.S.Kumaran deserves accolades for his background score. The songs “Aavaram Poo…”and “Choo Choo Maari…”stand out.
On the flip side, the second half drags a bit and the director could have done away with a couple of songs including the one that takes place in the marriage house. The suicide drama of Mari is not convincing and the comical scenes happening in the tea shop turn out to be redundant after a point.
Despite these flaws, one can easily rank the film among the finest in contemporary Tamil mainstream movies. No less than poetry on celluloid.

Poo review
The story is about a man who married a wealthy woman due to compulsions, chews his young golden days.
Srikanth, when he was little boy in the village, had a girl friend in the name Maari - Parvathy. The film details about how Srikanth and Parvathy enjoyed their village life during young age and then moves to show how Parvathy lives after Srikanth - who became an engineer got married to another wealthy woman.
Music and the lyrics for the song 'Maari Maari' is good but sings similar to that of famous POP song 'Varaan Varaan Poochaandi'.
Cinematography is good and is a good job done by Muthiah.
The movie is worth watching for one time, as it will help you bring a flashback about your own young day favourite.

and makes it to my list of GOOD movies of the year: (in alpha order)
Anjadhe
Poo
Jayam Kondaan
Santhosh Subramaniam
Saroja
Subramanipuram
Vaaranam Aayiram
All new faces - Srikanth doesnt appear on screen until almost 1 hour into the movie. Paravai Muniyamma takes on Silk Smitha role
complete with intro song.
No comedians but movie has plenty of funny moments.
Songs were average, but the BGM was good.
Excellent Cinematography
Excellent actress Parvathi (who reminds me of Priyamani)
Another Kalloori kind of movie!

That song was unnecessary, Sasi could have avoided another song also.

Yes, I went to the movie because of compulsion from my family. And only 10 mins were good (when Ravi confesses to his dad), rest of the scenes were almost like TV megaserial / drama. It was one pathetic movie.

Though the story portrays how sad it will be to see the loved one suffering, it also depicts how bad our family system and society are in a very subtle way. I don't know whether he wrote it consciously or not but that's happening in real life.
They should have retained the title 'vEyilOdu pOi' intead of 'poo'.

POO - Factually fragrant
Making a movie out a famous novel is often a difficult path to tread. Very few adaptations have been successfully made into films like Jeyakanthan's 'Yaarukkaga Azhudhan' and 'Silar Nerangalil Sila Maninardhal'. Director Sasi has boldly attempted to make a feature film out of the short story titled 'Veyilodu Poi', written by S. Tamil Selvan.
Sasi has woven a soft romantic story in an interesting manner with even small sequences given great care. The comic act by the boy who manages his cattle, events that occur in School, the non-vocal manner in which Mari expresses her mental agony are all nicely filmed.
Newcomer Parvathy Menon delivers an unbelievable performance in her very first film itself. The film belongs to her: it's Parvathy all the way. The way she emotes in various circumstances speaks volumes about her vast acting potential.
It won't be surprising at all if Parvathy manages to win an award or two for her performance in the film.
Srikanth should be applauded for agreeing to portray a character in a film which is basically a heroine-oriented one. Srikanth delivers a subdued performance, which was what the director probably expected of him.
Debutant music director Kumaran has involved himself fully in the proceedings and has scored at least a couple of hummable numbers besides making a neat work of background score. The 'Chuchu mari' song deserves special mention. Cinematography by P.G. Muthiah is a major plus point to the film. The way the drought situation and other scenic places in the villages captured is quite admirable.
Dialogues by Sasi are practical and the screenplay is reasonably a fast-paced one. For those who would like to have some quality-film viewing instead of sheer masala entertainers,
'Poo' is a not-to-be-missed film!
Poo - Worthy all the way!

This actress may miss the awards!
Parvathy’s astounding performance in the film Poo has been receiving rave reviews from the fans as well as the critics. In fact most of the audiences who watched the film vouch that Parvathy deserves an award for her performance. But what they fail to understand is that she had not lent her voice for the film. According to Poo’s director Sasi, he wanted Parvathy to dub for the film but her strong Malayalam accent forbade him to use her voice.
It is a well known rule that all the actors considered for the National award must have dubbed for the film. Since Parvathy’s voice was not used for Poo she may miss the coveted award.

அவன் (தங்கராசு) உனக்கு இல்லைனு ஆனபிறகும் அதே பாசத்தோடு உன்னால எப்படி இருக்க முடியுது? மா*ரியின் தோழி கேட்கும் இந்த கேள்விக்கான விடையை காட்சிகளாக்கியிருப்பதுதான் பூ-வின் ஆதாரம். மா*ரியின் எதிர்பார்ப்பில்லாத காதலின்முன் அனைத்துமே சிறுத்துவிடுகிறது.;

Poo at Chennai International Film Festival
Poo (directed by Sasi and produced by Moser Baer) is one of the most beautiful films released in recent times. The film was released less than two weeks ago and it has already been selected for a screening at Chennai International Film Festival which starts on December 17th. Not just the Chennai International Film Festival but Poo has been getting invites from various international film festivals as well!
Well, getting selected for an international film festival is in itself an achievement, but getting selected within days of its release is quite a feat, a feat that speaks volumes about its content and quality. Poo, which brought to the silver screens the beautiful tale of a simple village girl, has been running successfully to packed houses, proving that formula films are not the only road to success. This will encourage its producer Moser Baer to make more beautiful films like Poo.
This is only a beginning and no one shall be surprised if Poo lands at the Oscars and brings home an Oscar, such is its appeal and content.

Watched it...at times i couldn't help but groaning at how naive Mari was, other times i couldn't help but feel for her...there was a good deal of wondering whether it was the city boy would fall for the city girl...was not expecting the whole hereditary issue either. For the most part I enjoyed the childhood sentiment, the friendship between Cheeni and Mari, the scenery was breathtaking...and Srikanth knew he would be overshadowed and played his part well. The father of Thangarasa should get mention as well. Does anyone who played Mari's hubby? I will say that I really did not like the ending...it definitely had lots of story space for it to end on a positive note...i guess i was expecting Mari to take a "everything happens for the best" outlook especially after how the movie started out....but it seems a betrayal on both sides....after her preoccupations and the ending it seems that even the relationship between Mari and her hubby is shallow at least from her view.
