ok :P
In the past few films in which Kalaignar involved IMO the dialogues wer very ordinary and does not fit the current trend and were looking quite artificial. Of course i did not see those movies except for the scenes shown in the movie.
But i expect this movie dialogues could be much much better as the movie is set on different background :P
anyhow for this age the energy Kalaignar shows in this area is tremendous

Heard the dialogues are good ,but the getups shown in posters ,which indicates the story is with historical background (vineeth reminds chandramuki) keep the audience away from theatres

Uliyin Osai Movie Review
Movie Review: Uliyin Osai
Directed by: Ilavenil
Written by: Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi
Music: Ilayaraja
Cast: Vineeth, Keerthi Chawla, Sarathbabu, Manorama, Akshaya, Kovai Sarala, Kanja Karuppu, 'Thalaivasal' Vijay, Bala Singh and others Engrossing Period Drama
First things first. Uliyin Osai, written by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is an honest attempt to explore a historical happening that took place 1005 AD. Based on his own short story Saarapallam Samundi, Uliyin Osai has come out as an engrossing historical drama strengthened by a gripping script, excellent dialogues, good performances, and an outstanding music.
Debutant director Illavenil must be complemented for his guts to make a historical film in this ultra modern era and has proved his mettle as a director, besides proving that period dramas could still evoke interest if handled deftly.
The storyline goes like this: Raja Raja Chozhan (Sarath Babu) and his son Rajendra Chozhan want to build a grand temple in Thanjavur. They appoint the master sculptor Iniyan (Vineeth) and is asked to create 108 sculptures depicting various postures of the art of Bharathanatyam, the classical dance of Tamil Nadu. Iniyan, however, is not satisfied with the skills of the palace 'narthaki' Muthunagai (Akshay) and the hunt for the right girl to pose as the model for his sculpture work begins.
Samundi (Keerthi Chawla), said to be the grand daughter of a shepherd woman (Manorama) has fine skills in dancing and Iniyan starts working with her as model. .
After a couple of Twists ans turns the climax deals with some engaging stuff.
The director has narrated the story with interesting twists and without complications, thanks to the well-written script by Kalaignar.
While the comedy track involving Manorama, Kovai Sarala, and Ganja Karuppu provides some comical relief, the team goes overboard and spoils the smooth flow of the movie. The song featuring Manorama and Sarala could have been avoided.
Kalaignar has penned crisp and sharp dialogues going with the current trend. He has proved that he stays young when it comes to creativity. He has mixed right dosage of satire and social message in to his dialogues.
Music maestro Ilayaraja has emerged as the real hero of the film. He has given an outstanding music track.
Vineeth as the sculptor cum dancer has given his best ever performance. He exudes grace in his dances and quite competent in emoting and dialogue delivery. Though Keerthi Chawla looks beautiful, she lacks the finesse in dancing, which is very important for this film.
Overall, the movie is worth a watch despite some dragging moments. It could have been outstanding had the director made the so-called comedy track shorter and added more drama in to the story.

Ulliyin Osai
By Moviebuzz
Debutant director Illavenil's Uliyin Osai with script written by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi is a well chiseled period drama set in 1005 AD. It is a throwback to the 40's and 50's, when Tamil cinema had very capable script writers who could write in pure unadulterated Tamil.
The film is based on Karunanidhi's short story Saarapallam Samundi published in 'Murasoli', and written by him to be performed on stage to popularize the Dravidian movement in its early days. Karunanidhi's script is the real hero of the film. He has made it crisper to suit the taste of today's audiences, as there are no long drawn out dialogues that one associates with early Tamil period dramas.
Raja Raja Chozhan (Sarath Babu) and his son Rajendra Chozhan are benevolent rulers of the Chozha dynasty. As a mark of respect to the God's they want to build a temple in Thanjavur. They appoint the master sculptor Iniyan (Vineeth), a handsome young man who is also a good dancer to do the sculpture work for the big temple. But Iniyan finds the palace 'narthaki' (Akshay) not up to the mark and is unable to find the right girl to pose as the model for his sculpture work.
Meanwhile he meets a village girl Samundi (Keerthi Chawla) said to be the grand daughter of a shepherd woman (Manorama), who is not only beautiful but has an hour-glass like figure and dances like a dream. Iniyan slowly falls in love with his 'model', and when he expresses his love for her, she spurns it as she is the Queen herself! An absolutely shattered sculptor in a moment of remorse does something which is shocking and the real twist in the tale.
The director has mixed the film well with comedy and six beautiful melodies from Ilayaraja. The comedy between Manorama and Kovai Sarala is a delight, while Vineeth as the sculptor has come out with his best ever performance, Keerthi Chawla looks beautiful, while Akshay is just ok.
Kalaignar as the script writer has done a neat job of making a period film and that too a love story, strikes a chord with the viewers. And director Illavenil should be commended for not having any blood and gore, or item number thrust in to the film.

Saw a song on TV today. No doubts that this is yet another B-movie.
Vineeth and some girl dancing in a fort.
Ignore the post-Islamic style curvy architecture in the fort (in a story apparently in Chozha times). idhellAm sagajamappA !
But modern sounding percussion, typical Tamil movie dance steps...looked like a costume party ! Even Imsai Arasan 'looked' better.

A Hollywood term for second grade films.
As in low production values, costs, not intended to be a classic or even a 'good' movie. Done for quick commercial reasons, to make , do business, forget and move on.

Seriously, they should have done the movie in BW or with Sepia tone (just like done partially in Imsai), it will enrich the visual appeal even if the art direction is bad.

Judge,
I haven't listened to the songs yet. I found your comment funny. I had more or less the same thought when I saw the trailer. They should have at least improved the style and the presentation. Kalaignar needs a good director who can get great dialogues from his repository and thereby doing the justice with good visuals.

Most of BR's earlier films had great camera work (kurippaga enakku bramippaga irukkum) .. he used to have a lot of cut shots & as usual IR's re-recording will be there as a back up for those shots

Yeah, haven't seen them. I have seen some scenes of KC on TV, that's pretty much it. BR usually likes to have close-up shots of artists, he likes to capture the emotional part of them by going close, he never liked to have pretty frames with beautiful landscapes.

Yes, I have seen all those BR-IR films. BR's shot preference is different from other directors. IR's bgm and songs played big role in his movies.

As there were no further discussions about this movie, the thread was pushed to page 2.
But it deserves to be in page 1 for some more days.

Want to watch it for longtime but somehow keep postponing it. The good screenplay and music are the reasons that I am still interested in, let me check it out.
