Captain Vijayakanth, after a successful stint in filmdom, floated his political party with an ultimate dream of capturing power in the State and set up his own government. An elected MLA from Vridhachalam, he has appropriately titled his 150th film as Arasangam.
Directed by Madesh, the movie was initially titled as Vithagan. Now they have opted for a new title – Arasangam. Vijayakanth is in the role of an instructor in Police Training College. Plans are on to shoot the movie in USA and Canada.
Newcomers Navneet Kaur and Seril Brindo will play Vijayakanth's heroines.
Also in the cast are Rahul Dev, Biju Menon and a couple of Hollywood actors. Srikanth Deva will score the music while A Venkatesh will handle cinematography. Pattukottai Prabhakar is penning the dialogues.
Stunts by Rocky Rajesh will be the highlight.

Captain’s ‘Arasangam’ creates history
For the first time in the history an audio CD of a movie will be sold one lakh copies on the day of the release. It is one of the rarest happenings in 75 years of Tamil cinema history.
The audio of Vijayakanth – Navneeth Kaur starrer 'Arasangam' is slated to be launched on March 28. The launch function will be held in Chennai like any other audio CD of a film. But the producers of 'Arasangam' have planned to make the release a grand event by organizing audio release functions all over Tamil Nadu.
Captain Vijayakanth’s DMDK is gearing up for the event as if it is a party function. The office bearers of the party have booked one lakh CDs for the event. The functions held in all districts will also mark the launch of many welfare schemes. This would be the first time an audio track selling one lakh copies on the first day itself. Orders have been received even from Andaman Nicobar islands for 350 CDs. This is the first time such orders coming from the island.
Srikanth Deva has scored the music while Rhythm Music has procured the audio rights.
a‘Arasangam’, Captain’s 150th film, is produced by L.K. Sudheesh and directed by director R. Madhesh. A large portion of the film has been shot in Toronto, Canada in 45 days. It has been said that a few Hollywood and Canadian film artists have assisted in the production of the film. The film is expected to be released by the second week of April.

RR,
If I am not mistaken, KH claimed on the day of launching Audio for Mumbai Xpress that the sales has to start its count from 1lac.+1 as they already had a prebooking of 1lac. CDs prior to the release itself from his fans associations. Atleast I am sure he said that on audio release day.

But RR , our VK in comparison with his initial movies, had worked on his characterization well . His action movies like Pulan visaranai , Umai vizigal etc were his turning points no ?
His portrayal of Chinna goundar was superb . Ofcourse his solid personality also helped. Lots of Goundar type movies followed .
Coming to fight scene arrangements, definitely he created a new genre . Before that, even Rajini’s fight sequences pale. VK’s fights will have a virtual fist punching on your face !

Reg: Audio of ARASANGAM / any vijayakanth film:
IMO:
The Last best audio for a Vijayakanth film is from Isaignani for RAMANA.
B4 that (post 1995) there are some other good songs given by music directors like:
* Vidyasagar - Thavasi
* SA Rajkumar - vanathai pola, kannupada poguthayya
* Deva - En aasai machan, sokkathangam, vallarasu (song: aruppu koattai akka ponnu)
But as usual Ilayaraaja is the one who could give some good songs even for a mass hero who doesn't rely on songs, dance, acting & comedy for his survival in film industry.
PS:
Vijayakanth has introduce 2 music directors in Tamil:
Manisharma - (Film: Narasimha)
Bharani - (Film: Periyanna)

Bill..... ungal karuthukku nandri......
Now-a-days.. he is more interested in Politics & also he believes in the Director & wont interfere with the story & other things (only after his politics interest he started using his flag in film)
thats y we had a RAMANA & we have a Dharmapuri too....
Captain is a complete Director's Actor

History rewritten

Captain’s Arasangam is almost over and its audio was released in Vijay Park Hotel, Chennai. The title indicates it to be a political thriller, but Vijayakanth disclosed that it is purely a murder story, more so in the lines of his yesteryear film Oomai Vizhigal. The storyline is very different; though dealing with terrorism, it is about how terrorists lure poor people to join their outfits. The name, explained Vijayakanth, was chosen as the police play an important role in solving the murder mystery. Police, then again, is a part of the government, hence the name, he justified. He also threw a poser at those present: “If you’re surprised about this, what about my next registered title Ullatchi?
He added that the songs in Arasangam have been shot using the latest technology with good dance movements to provide variety, as all the songs have been selected with extreme care. Vijayakanth was also confident that this film would prove to be a turning point in director Madhesh’s career.

Arasaangam Audio realise

Vijayakanth’s 'Arasangam' on April 11
IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 31, 2008]
Vijayakanth’s ‘Arasangam’, which is ready to hit the screens by April 11, is not a film in which the Captain chases the terrorist. He revealed this in the audio launch function held on March 28 in Chennai. “I am not chasing the terrorists in the film. It is a police story. Since police department comes under government control we have opted for the title”, said the Captain.
Director Madhesh showered praise on the actor for his dedication in his work. Vijayakanth, according to the director, is an actor, who doesn’t want to waste producer’s money. He recalled an incident that took place during the shooting in Canada. The director and the producer insisted Vijayakanth to go back to Chennai when the later fell sick. Captain, however, refused to go back and cooperated to the shooting despite his ill health.
The cadres of Vijayakanth’s DMDK have made a history by purchasing around one lakh audio CDs of ‘Arasangam’. More orders are expected to come, informed Vijayakanth.
Srikanth Deva, who has scored the music for the movie, has completed 50% of the rerecording of the film.

‘Arasangam’ and ‘Nepali’ sold
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, April 01, 2008]
Gone are the days when producers used to worry about the distribution issues of their films. The distribution blues have been considerably reduced after the advent of Corporate Firms entering the field. We could witness more and more corporate firms entering in to the area of film distribution besides producing films.
The distribution rights of Vijayakanth starrer ‘Arasangam’ and Bharath starrer ‘Nepali’, the movies that are expected to hit the halls by the second week of April, have been sold to Corporate companies. While Pyramid Saimira has procured the distribution rights of ‘Arasangam’, Reliance Company has bagged the rights of ‘Nepali’.
The rights of ‘Nepali’ has been sold to two crore rupees while the amount given for ‘Arasangam’ is yet to be known. But Pyramid has given the whole amount even before the film is released. It is said that the gesture is in reciprocation to the help rendered by Captain when the company got in to a big trouble during its beginning stage.

Arasaangam in Trouble

Arasaangam Sure Hit

A bit late..... but still its a good news:
----------------------------------------------------
Arasangam's music is refreshing
Initial copies of the audio album of actor-turned politician, Vijayakanth's 150th film Arasangam were, it is reported, lapped up by his party followers on the very first day of the music launch -- a record in the 75-year old history of the Tamil film industry. As a result, retail outlets had to wait for many more days to get their stock.
Arasangam is directed by Madhesh who has also written the story, screenplay and dialogues. Vijayakanth has a new heroine in the film, Navneeth Kaur, a Telugu import.
Srikanth Deva's youth oriented music has original tunes brought about by employing a slew of instruments such as the guitar, violin, veena, flute and even the Hindusthani musical instrument Shehnai.
* Jil jil mazhayil, the opening number of this five-track album starts with a catchy instrumental and continues in western genre with hip-hop chorus. Rita's powerful and sensuous rendition and imaginative percussion, which suddenly mellows and then goes into the upper register, are the highlights of the number.
Lyricist Kabilan has used some original imagery except for the pattampoochi (butterfly) metaphor, which has become a cliche in Tamil film lyrics. The stylish number ends on soft instrumental notes.
* Pookkal ethinai by Prasanna Rao and Swetha is a melodious love duet with a hip-hop interlude. The lilting veena strains provide ideal backdrop for Kabilan's romantic lyrics which are meaningful but once again pattampoochi flies in! Prasanna Rao's voice adds pep to the track. Swetha's velvety vocals are pleasing but her rendition lacks clarity.
* The Cindrella track is a foot-tapping racy piece. It incorporates elements of rock and pop with an intelligent mix of techno beats. Ujjayinee's rendition is upbeat and lively. The number with hip-hop bits, catchy chorus, brisk tempo and high adrenaline flow has all the potential to become a disco favourite. There is nothing much to write home about Vijay's lyrics, though, which are just a melange of sounds. The number somehow does not create an integrated wholesome feel.
* The theme song Adalaru rendered by Ranjith and Megha with rap prelude is noteworthy for its easy flowing, simple yet pleasing rhythmic accompaniment. Ranjith is his usual robust self and Megha gives perfect support. The number with hip-hop interlude and rap sequences ends on a happy note with Megha's soft laughter.
* The composer signs off with Ko kuruvi, which has mixed genres of kuthu and folk. Kabilan's lyrics with alliterative sounds tumbling over one another do not amount to much. The number in certain places briefly creates a sense of deja vu. However, weighty rendition and loud vocals by Suchithra and Hemambika, and vibrant percussion has managed to make this a lively and pleasing exercise.
It is refreshing to note that Srikanth Deva has shaken off his tendency to copy others and scripted a somewhat above average fare.

my roommate who works for digital cinemas saw Arasangam yesterday and he said the movie is 'decent'
he said captain has 'adakivasuchufyed' and 'paravailla romba overa pannala' and the movie is enjoyable
and one more interesting piece of information is the movie features an exclusive english speaking captain for the first time...!

I agree that fight sequences were choreographed well. but if we consider VK's films, fights will be more intense (atleast a couple of them). Athe consider pannauna Ramana la intha fight ella konjam abrupt ah varum. Fight sequences intensity konjam kammi thaan. The same goes to Govt Office fight. Just compare that with VaanjiNaathan fight inside comissioner office. Masala padam ah irunthaalum adi onnum nachunnu irukkum. (If we consider pure masala action sequences) :P

VK's 125th film is a big flop. (Ulavuthurai).
It is mainly because of over enthu / expectation / desperation of the team to make it big
He even introduced Director, Music director & Villain for that film but all are flopped

Just my thought : Gautham is good in cop stories if not the best. If he directs VK down the line, it would be good. They can come up with an interesting

Arasangam, a pleasant surprise
Pavithra Srinivasan
May 09, 2008 18:35 IST
Sometimes, you go to a movie with the lowest of expectations. Either the whole cast and crew is new or it's an old and established one, with its own values, ethics, story and acting set in stone. And when it's a star/politician with a lot at stake both in cinema and politics, you're doubly sure that the movie isn't going to be anything to write home about.
Captain Cine Arts' Tamil film Arasangam (Government) directed by Madhesh and starring 'Captain' Vijaykanth certainly didn't inspire wild hopes of an excellent movie. But fate has a way of throwing you off. This movie is one such pleasant surprise.
One of the first surprise elements is that Vijaykanth doesn't appear until at least twenty minutes of the movie has passed, which is a very good thing. And when he does appear, there's less of pyrotechnics and fireworks exploding. This time, he's Arivarasu, an instructor at the Police Training Academy. He's intellectual, dignified, intelligent and well-versed in the world's best police training methods. He trains batches of students by conducting simulated police exercises.
So when the police, baffled at the disappearance of his best friend Manoj (Biju Menon) and several assassinations of prominent scientists and entrepreneurs calls him to investigate, it actually makes sense. Not to mention the fact that Manoj is actually his brother-in-law too.
A little interlude of how Aarthi (Navneet Kaur [Images]) becomes his wife is rather cutely shot.
And then, when you expect gunshots and fisticuffs, the story surprises you with a logical train of events. Arivarasu, instead of fighting a thousand goons single-handedly, takes mature decisions and follows procedures. At every point he uses his brains and predicts the outcome. And even if such an outcome is rather amateurish at times, you still like the panache with which he does it.
Chandru (Rahul Dev) is the first of many villains who manages to throw our hero off track, and then gets killed just at the right moment. Many more follow as well as an unexpected twist in the tale. The hunt for Manoj takes Arivarasu to Canada [Images] which reminds you of shades of Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu.
With Aarthi safe at home as wife, it's the turn of Lara (Seril Brindo), a member of the Royal Canadian Police Force, to show him the ropes. How she does this by wearing skimpy clothes and high heels is a mystery. Fortunately, there's actually something for her to do. And then it's back to saving the country.
This being his 150th movie, Vijaykanth has certainly made several carefully thought out decisions. Firstly, there are no shrill screams about patriotism and long speeches about serving the country, except in the climax. But since Biju Menon also has a part to play, it's evenly matched.
The crux of the assassinations is well-explained, and Vijaykanth takes the time to throw in a few well-placed barbs at the present political scenario. There is no unnecessary bashing up either.
At a strategically important position in Tamil Nadu politics, he undoubtedly understands the need to appear suave, polished and educated -- and indeed, does inspire a certain dignity with his portrayal. It shows a good deal for his maturity that he's chosen a role that fits his age, and has acted with restraint.
Biju Menon in a meaty role this time has done well. An emaciated Rahul Dev looks the part, though he hams throughout. Both the heroines have very little to do but prance around in designer costumes. Sreeman appears very briefly, but makes an impression. So does a clean-shaven and fit Riyaz Khan.
Rocky Rajesh's stunts have hit the mark, only to be expected in a 'Captain' film.
Srikanth Deva's songs are mediocre except for the foot-tapping Kuruvi.
In the end though, its Madhesh's screenplay that wins, showing some signs of intelligence and hard work. Go watch the movie with nil expectations.

‘Arasangam’ opens big
Vijayakanth starrer ‘Arasangam’ has opened big. The actor-turned-politician's 150th film ‘Arasangam’, directed by Madesh hit the screens on Friday. The movie has managed positive reviews from the audience.
Interestingly in the rural areas, the movie has managed a good response and reportedly witnessed full houses. The stunts, which are a highlight in Vijayakanth's movies, in ‘Arasangam’ have gone well with his fans.
The movie which features Vijayakanth in the role of a instructor in police training college is sure to become a blockbuster, say Vijayakanth fans.
Distributed by Pyramid Saimira, ‘Arasangam’ would be a big hit among Vijayakanth sympathizers.

I saw ARASANGAM in a local theater in Bangalore.
Thanks to my friend (office senior), who accompanied me having faith in my words (courtesy: some cool reviews)
The film has really a new story, but the execution / screenplay makes to compare with Vettayadu Vilayadu...... but the story is totally different to VV.
Thanks to Madhesh for making a racy thriller with less -ve's.
I rate (post 1995) this film next to RAMANA in terms of slick presentation with substance.
I say, Hubbers u can see this film with your family as it was certified U & there are no double meaning vulgar comedy (which are regular in recent films), no much bloodsheds & there is very less skin galmour, no exaggerated punch dialogues, less advice from Captain....... A RACY THRILLER ON CARDS..... what else u need to have a decent film?
COME ON.. JUST TRY IT IN THEATERS & U WILL DEFINITELY LIKE IT

First I shud congratulate Madesh coming out of Vijakanth movie villains:
I was relieved, as there is no Radharavi, Rajeev, Prakash raj, etc. stereotype villains in a Captain film.
I don't want to reveal any outline of the story.
--------------------------------------------
some cool dialogues i could re-collect:
Riyaz khan is Asst Commissonar & Vijayakanth is his higher authority who is going to investigate the case.
Another offcer introduces Riaz to captain:
Captin (looks a second): smart boy

(everyone knows captain's smartness in this film & Riaz's well built physique)
---------------------------------------
Captain deals with a student... he doesn't want to tell the truth:

I had the worst experience in the balcony when I saw Kireedom there. Sound effects were good for that theatre. But seats and the whole balcony looked like an underground storage area.

Arasangam
By Moviebuzz
"Captain" Vijaykanth has kept his promise not to be preachy in his 150th film Arasangam. He and his director Madhesh have delivered a fairly decent entertainer, which is interesting and racy. The film reminds you of the old uncomplicated action movies that the 'Captain' used to do earlier.
Araviarasu (Vijaykanth) is a criminologist working as the chief instructor at the police training college. He uses his brains and brawn to catch criminals and has a passion for his job. Arivu is happily married to Aarthy (Navneet Kaur) after some enjoyable courtship and a song. Meanwhile top scientists and entrepreneurs get murdered in the city, by ordinary people like a student, a poor graduate girl, a milkman.
The top echelon of the police force is baffled by this murder spree. Suddenly Arivu is asked to investigate the matter as a top cop and his brother-in-law Manoj (Biju Menon) disappears in mid air as he is on his way from Mumbai to Chennai.
The sharp brain of Arivu leads him to Chandru (Rahul Dev), a guy who is killing off top 'brain trust' of future India using innocent people to murder them. However Chandru escapes to Canada when the super cop is just about to close in on him.
Not to be discouraged our hero in hot pursuit goes to Toronto, to catch the kingpin behind the operations. In Toronto (everybody speaks Tamil!) he is assisted by a sexy undercover Royal Canadian Police agent Lara ( Seril Brindo).
Together they unearth a plot to destabilize India with their "operation brain dead" plan where a foreign force jealous of India becoming a world leader wants to kill all scientists and entrepreneurs.
The bad guys are led by Martin (no explanation is given how cop Manoj and Martin look like twins? Maybe the bad guy did a face-off with the good guy?) The rest of the film is how our hero brings back Martin to Chennai and also uncovers another diabolical plot to destabilize the country.
The film has everything packaged as masala entertainment, and for a change Vijaykanth is engaging and enjoyable. There are just two songs in the film, by Srikanth Deva to show Navneet's and Seril's glamour. Biju Menon as bad guy is promising, while Rahul Dev looks anemic.
Thank god there is no irritating comedy track.
For the undemanding masala fan, Arasangam is worth a look, when you compare it with the recent crop of over hyped super hero films that failed to deliver.
Verdict- Time-Pass Entertainer

Actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth predictably utters punch-lines galore in "Arasangam" (government), which can be interpreted by his fans as verbal brownie points scored against bigger political opponents.
This Madhesh directed Tamil venture accords legislator Vijaykanth a free hand to exhibit his brains and brawn to get endorsement from rural audiences.
Vijaykanth plays 'Arivarasu' - a name that translates in English as 'monarch of intelligence' - heading a police training academy and living a nondescript, happily married existence. His wife is played by Punjab import Navneet Kaur.
Arivarasu is asked to solve the mystery behind the murder of important scientists and entrepreneurs who have created a path-breaking invention to help India and the kidnapping of a senior police officer, who is his brother-in-law Manoj (Biju Menon).
Instead of being another Rambo, Arivarasu uses his brain. He traipses around Canada where he is assisted by Lara, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer (Seril Brindo), rescues Manoj and extricates the nation's future from the baddies headed by Chandru (Rahul Dev).
Vijaykanth acts his age and puts in a spirited performance. The action is slickly choreographed by "Rocky" Rajesh.
In a word, "Arasangam" is a treat for diehard Vijaykanth fans thanks to a passably decent screenplay.

Frankly speaking, I entered the theatres to watch this movie just to make fun about the actor who reverently keeps entertaining with unusual stunts and lots of punch dialogues. He would be either trap an International Terrorist or cleanse the bad scenario of Politics in India (Tamil Nadu). But, it was a great disappointment for me that Arasangam didn't posses any of these features of cliché where you don't have Captain Vijayakanth fighting against 100 gundas at a time or sending back bullets to the villain's guns.
To another greater extent of surprise, you will not have Vijayakanth appearing for the first 25mins. Wow! That's sounds something different isn't? A mass hero who has throngs gathered out to watch out his title song that carries some messages for his fans. It's a simple and naturalistic introduction for the hero character named Arivarasu.
Arivarasu (Vijayakanth) is an instructor at the Police Training Academy who keeps training batches of students. Indeed, he is a dignified man of his career who knows each and every bits of police training techniques on how and where to use it. Each and every of his deeds has a perfect logic and you can't find flaw out of it. His life goes peaceful and contented Arivarasu leads a contended life with his wife Aarthi (Navneeth Kaur). But things get worsened when his close friend Manoj (Biju Menon) disappears with no clues left behind and it is followed by assassinations of enormous world-renowned scientists.
Its time for Arivarasu start the race of solving out nonplussing events and tracking the unit remaining cause behind it and for another surprise you don't have our hero piercing out bullets at unwanted times. Yup! Its surprise after surprise indeed… On the latter part, it is revealed that Manoj isn't just his close friend, but his brother-in-law.
With a mission of accomplishing his task, Arivarasu has Lara (Seril Brindo), a member of Royal Canadian Interpol Force accompanying him. But its not just with sleek outfits and looks, she does attract you. Also she has got something interesting to do with her characterization.
First on the tracks of introducing with the hero, Chandru (Rahul Dev) who in the initial part dominates in his plans and doesn't make the cops to follow him including Arivarasan too. But for the sake of cliché and gratifying the audience, he has to polished off at some point of time.
Two movies that comes to my mind soon after watching this movie is Hollywood movie The Hunted directed by William Friedkin starring L.T.Bonham and Aaron Hallom in lead roles. And with not even a second to guess about another movie would be Kamal Haasan starrer Vettaiyadu Vilaiyaadu.
Of course, with accordance to his public life image, Director Madhesh has included few bit of dialogues concerning social consciousness and saving the country during the climax scenes. One thing that makes me again and again sing appraisals of both Vijaykanth and Madhesh is that none of the plots have been handled properly. Director makes the film not just go on with Vijaykanth, but also with Biju Menon who has been given equal importance to his characterization.
Speaking about other star casts, Biju Menon and Rahul Dev have come up scintillating performance and that's something unforeseen in any of the VIjaykanth's movies where only he is given more importance. Rocky Rajesh analyzing clearly the limitations and capabilities of Vijaykanth has used him properly for his stunts. Srikanth Deva's music helps in no manner and it would have been nice, if there were no songs included here for this fast moving thriller screenplay based movie.
As a whole, we congratulate Madhesh for a stunning and different movie with Captain Vijayakanth who didn't have good times with his previous movies. The interesting and gripping screenplay sans absurdities and usual masala stuffs makes this movie a great thing to watch for.
Verdict: Worth watching without any expectations…

“Book the tickets to make fun of the entire movie”, I thought to myself before booking the tickets for Arasangam. I had no intention of watching the movie, but to make fun of Captain Vijayakanth who all the time does comedic oriented stunts of hitting hundreds of baddies at a time and do what all stunts he loves. The film had its opening titles passing on its screen and audiences with the same intentions started whistling down awaiting for our Captain’s intro, which would normally be off a unbelievable annoying action sequence or a song where he appraised by the people.
We waited and waited for his intro, but we were damn disappointed to see Vijaykanth not appearing on the screen for the first 20mins. My God! “An eighth wonder” I said for we had the actor appearing with simplistic manner. You have no horrifying background score or any punch dialogues.
That was the first point where the entire crowd were calmed down watching out for a different show and so did I. The flick moves on moderately entertaining you all with no complex traits for Arivarasu (Vijayakanth), a trainer at Assam Police Training Academy training out young batch of students.
Life moves with a cool ambience for Arivarasu with his wife Aarthi (Navneeth Kaur), but that is until his close friend and brother-in-law Manoj (Biju Menon) goes missing. But this is not alone the problems as the things get complicated with world famous scientists getting assassinated one by one.
Arivarasu – a man mastered over each and every pinch of technique training techniques now stands on the shoes of loosening the knots and finding whereabouts of Manoj and men behind the mystery of serial murders.
In midst of this tough situation, Lara (Seril Brindo) an investigative officer in Canada Interpol Department accompanies Arivarasu in getting hidden dark mysteries into light.
One best thing that Vijayakanth does with this film is that he has never implemented any of his political ideologies. He has completely paved his ways for the innovativeness of Madhesh and made the flick look more perfect. With trimmed looks and style, Vijaykanth does a stupendous job to retain his position in Kollywood with good scenario.
Getting on with Madhesh, the director has well-powerfully crafted screenplay, characterizations and knots. This thriller film has lots of twists and turns that will surely move you edge of your seats. We are sure that will leave off all the attitudes of making fun of Vijaykanth while watching this movie.
Aarthi and Seril have lived up to the expectations with their characters and Rahul Dev does the same with negative role. Biju Menon has performed equally to that of Vijayakanth and it is Madhesh who has used both of them in a good manner.
Well, on the part of Music, Srikanth Deva has somewhat better compared to his previous films and nothing else special from him.
On the whole, Arasangam is a movie that is worth watching and we assure that you will enjoy watching it…
Bottom - Line: A splendid strike from Madhesh
Verdict: OK

Captain is back - saving India and its citizens from the vicious terrorists. Arasangam, however, tries to portray this nothing-so-new story by downplaying the usual supplements of a Vijayakanth movie, thereby proving to be watchable. Besides, it employs stylish camera angles and breathtaking sets and locations, setting itself a world apart from the other Vijayakanth movies.
The story, however, falls into the standard ‘Captain rescues India from the terrorist masterminds and master plans’ genre. Vijayakanth is an IPS officer with a specialization in criminology. When India’s top brains are serial-killed and officer Biju Menon, brought in to investigate the matter, is also found dead during his flight, Vijayakanth becomes the unanimous choice to nail the terrorists and foil their future plans.
He discovers about Operation Blue Thunder, formulated by terrorists from developed countries to cripple India’s growth. The operation aims at executing the nerve system of India – scientists, directors of top research institutions, economists, and politicians. Now it is left to the Captain to nab the baddies and save the country.
With a script that provides enough fodder for a typical Vijayakanth movie, Director Madesh has done his best to present
it with credibility. His attempts succeed in the first half and lose steam in the latter. After all, exotic locations and hi-fi visual fundas are not sufficient to sustain interest when the script has nothing new to offer. Nevertheless, Madesh’s source of inspiration (Silence of Lambs, to be precise) is evident in more than a few scenes.
Captain ought to shed a little more flab (a lot actually), it prevents him from performing his famous fast-as-a-supersonic stunt sequences. Rakhi Rajesh’s stunt proclaims his wild imagination and sadly defies all the published laws of gravity. The stunts also remain another source of inspiration for people to lose interest. Biju Menon, in his double role, excels with his subtle performance.
Srikanth Deva’s ‘Cindrella’ and ‘Koo Kuruvi’ numbers are catchy but the background score is simply eardrum cracking. Tarun Kumar and Dinesh’s dance movements are also worth noticing. Venkatesh’s camera endows the movie with a stylish look, especially in the scenes when the movie travels to Canada.
Verdict : Not the best bet, but at least not the typical Vijayakanth package.

Arasangam overtakes Kuruvi
Mon, 12 May, 2008,12:18 PM
.
Vijayakanth’s Arasangam has emerged as winner in the box-office race for supremacy this week-end overtaking Vijay’s Kuruvi.
Kuruvi, a much-hyped movie, directed by Dharani and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, hit the screens a couple of weeks ago, followed by Arasangam (150th film of Vijayakanth).
.
Since both the actors enjoy good fan-following, expectations were high on the films. But Kuruvi managed mixed reviews while word-of-mouth publicity for Arasangam has been good so far.
According to sources, Arasangam opened managed full houses in both urban and rural centres. Interestingly for the first time Vijayakanth has managed to attract maximum crowd in multiplexes too.

Captain’s ship sails smooth (Arasangam)
M Bhaskar Sai | Mon, 12 May, 2008,03:47 PM
.
Those who go to cinema halls without much expectation are in for a surprise if they watch Arasangam, a movie which has Vijaykanth in the lead.
The film is a racy thriller sans any unwanted ballyhoo from the actor- turned- politician.
.
Vijayakanth, who has decades-old experience in donning the role of a police officer, repeats it in the film.
He plays Arivarasu, a brainy and brawny officer in the Police Department striving to unfold the mystery behind the missing of his colleague cum brother-in-law Manoj (Biju Menon).
He leaves for Canada to solve the mystery and he is shocked to find a masterplan by an international terrorist gang to kill all the intellectuals in India as part of their plot to check the country’s growth. How he saves the country with the help of Canadian police officer Lara (Sheryl Brindo) forms the crux of the film.
If you are ready to forget the English pronounciation and romantic expressions of ‘Captain’, the screen presence of the actor as a police officer is set to leave you spellbound.
Navneet Kaur, who plays the wife of Vijayakanth, is wasted while Sheryl Brindo lends a helping hand to the film. However, the real show- stealer is Biju Menon who springs a surprise in two different roles.
Srikanth Deva’s music is a major letdown. The action is slickly choreographed by ‘Rocky’ Rajesh.
Director Madhesh, who has also penned the script, has ensured that the audience is presented with a commercial entertainer.
At the same time, the filmmaker alone can answer to the question whether State police officers could get training in Army’s Officers Training Academy, as shown in the film.

I do agree that Narasimma is the peak of all Captain's serious comedies.. but Arasangam has only 5 % comedy compared to Narasimma

Arasangam - An engrossing thriller
Congrats Captain Vijayakanth for coming up with a good show in his milestone movie. ‘Arasangam’, the 150th film of Vijayakanth, directed by Madhesh is a whiff of fresh air in Tamil cinema which is full of with commercial pot-boilers. Vijayakanth in the company of Madesh has come out with a thriller which is sure to delight not only his fans but also audience of all sections.
Quite unlike other Vijayakanth movies, ‘Arasangam’ has no punch line dialogues from Vijayakanth, no big song heaping laurels on the hero or clichéd comedy sequences. Madesh has struck to the basics of making an engrossing thriller and succeeds in his attempt.
Though Vijayakanth has donned Khakhi in several films before, in ‘Arasangam’ he plays an instructor in a police training college where in he is brawny as well as brainy. He lends solidity to his role and underplays. He deserves a pat for not tempting to overdo his role.
He unfolds the mystery behind the missing of his colleague cum brother-in-law Manoj (Biju Menon). The screen presence of Vijayakanth as a police officer is set to leave you spellbound.
Navneet Kaur, who plays the wife of Vijayakanth, has no big role to perform, while Sheryl Brindo lends a helping hand to the film. However, the real show- stealer is Biju Menon, who springs a surprise in two different roles.
In a nutshell, the movie is about Arivarasu (Vijayakanth), who leaves for Canada to solve the mystery and he is shocked to find a master plan by an international terrorist gang to kill all the intellectuals in India as part of their plot to check the country's growth.
How he saves the country with the help of Canadian police officer Lara (Sheryl Brindo) forms the crux of the film.
A pet theme of Vijayakanth and hence he enjoys every part of the film. He is at his ease all through the scene. Especially in the stunt sequences, Captain walks away with applause.
Srikanth Deva's brisk background score adds pep to the film.
All credit to Madesh, who has shown care in every frame to ensure that ‘Arasangam’ is different from the routinue Vijayakanth films.
The suspense and drama elements in ‘Arasangam’ are sure to keep the audience at the edge of their seats.
For those who enjoy suspense thrillers, ‘Arasangam’ is the right destination.

Captain back in action
celebrates logic Arasangam
All you need to make a film work is a neat screenplay that's translated well on screen, with little interference in the form of misplaced comedy scenes and item numbers. And, director Madesh has got it right in Captain Cine Creations' Arasangam, produced by L. K. Sudeesh.
This is Vijayakant's 150th film, and he has not taken on too many action scenes, except for a jump that looks like special effects have been at work. But, Madesh has proved that he is from the Shankar school of filmmaking, and is here to do sensible work. This is a far better film than his earlier one Madurai, featuring Vijay.
Criminologist Arivarasu (Vijayakant) tells his friend Manoj (Biju Menon), a cop in the anti-terrorist squad, that he likes Arthi (Naveneeth Kaur), who is deaf. He later realises she is none other than Manoj's sister. The Tamil Nadu police requests Manoj to take over a case in Chennai. He boards the flight, but is missing when it lands in Chennai. The police are left clueless. Meanwhile, some of the best brains in the country are killed by unknown forces. The Union Home Minister (Ravichandran) dran) orders that the culprits be found quickly. Arivarasu steps into the picture. The investigation takes him as far away as Canada. It transpires that Manoj has been killed by the villain Chandru (a fine act by Rahul Dev) on the flight.
Madesh has focussed even on the small things, and that shows his control over the script. And, he has not made the hero dance wearing flamboyant costumes, or fight heavyweights with ease. Logic is maintained throughout the film, barring the climax. Vijayakant plays his character effortlessly, and the film will be a milestone in his career. But, he has to do something about his double chin - it distracts the audience.
Biju Menon plays a double role - as Manoj and terrorist Martin Jayapal, and excels in both. The difference in the two characters comes through well. Ceril Printo as the Canadian undercover cop has done a good job. The only jarring note is her dance at the club. Naveneeth Kaur does not have much to do after the first few reels; she ends her life in the climax. Riyaz Khan as the Assistant Commissioner and Deepan Chakravarthi as the Director Director General of Police are convincing. And, Kokila shines in her brief role as Manoj's second sister. A.Venkatesh's camera enhances the proceedings, but the same cannot be said about Srikanth Deva's music. Madesh's dialogues flow with the screenplay, but sadly, some of the stars falter while rendering the English dialogues.
Arasangam
Genre: Action thriller
Director: Madesh
Cast: Vijayakant, Ceril Printo, Navneeth Kaur, Biju Menon, Rahul Dev, Ravichandran, Riyaz Khan, Deepan Chakravarthi and Kokila.
Storyline: A police officer disappears. His friend, a criminologist, sets out in search of him, and ends up saving the country
Bottomline: A solid Vijayakant film

Arasaangam
Genre: Action thriller
Director: Madhesh
Cast: Vijayakant, Cyril Pinto,
Navneeth Kaur, Biju Menon
Storyline: A police officer
disappears. A criminologist's
search leads to a big gang
which is out to destroy the country.
Bottomline: After a long time
a Vijayakant film has a neat screenplay.
A neat screenplay sensibly presented on screen without interferences such as unwanted comedy will certainly make a good film. Director Madhesh proves it in his recent film `Arasaangam,' from Captain Cine Creations.
This is the 150th film of Vijayakant. The actor has not exerted himself too much in stunts or action, except a jump which has been done with the help of special effects.
Director Madhesh has shown that he is from the school of director Shankar and he wants to do some sen sible work. He should be proud that he has matured after his previous film `Madurai' with Vijay as his hero.
The Tamil Nadu police requests Manoj (Biju Menon), a cop with in the anti terrorist squad in Mumbai, to take up a case in Chennai.
Till he gets into his seat on a flight to Chennai he is seen talking over phone to his sister (Kokila). But when the flight lands Manoj is missing. The Chennai police is baffled.
In the meantime some of the best brains in the country get killed mercilessly. Arivarasu (Vijayakant), a criminologist, is asked to take up the case. The investigation takes him to Canada.
Director scores
Director Madhesh shows he is a good screenplay writer. Small things like the scene where the doctor, in his tension during the interrogation, puts the pen without its cover into his pocket and has his shirt smudged with ink, shows the acumen of the director.
It is good that Madhesh has not made the hero dance in different costume or fight heavyweights with his little finger. Logic is maintained throughout the film except the scene where the hero and villain jump a great distance in the climax.
This is a better film from director Madhesh than his earlier one, `Madurai.'
Vijayakant has understood his character in the film and acts with ease. He should try to do some thing about his double chin, which certainly distracts the audience. It is a good movie to be released as his 150th - a mile stone in his acting career. Biju Menon as terrorist Martin Jayapal and also as the cop Manoj. In the both the roles he has given a good performance. Rahul Dev has certainly given a fine act as the villain.
Cyril Pinto as the undercover cop with the Canadian police has done a good job. The only jarring note is her dance at the night club.
Navneeth Kaur as wife Arthi does not have much to do after the first few reels. She ends her life in the climax.
Riyaz Khan as the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deepan Chakravarthy as the DGP have done their work convincingly. In spite of a small role Kokila's work is note worthy. Director has utilised all the artists well.
A.Venkatesh's camera work has enhanced the proceedings but the same cannot be said about Srikanth Deva's music.
Madhesh's dialogue shows that he is the the brain behind the show. His words match his screenplay. But the sore note is that some of the stars are not able to pronounce English dialogue correctly. L.K.Sudeesh has produced the film.

Ajay Devgan's Vijayakanth connection
Arasangam's success has ensured the film's entry to Bollywood. According to industry sources, Ajay Devgan will star in the Hindi version. Shifting the laurels on Vijayakanth, its director Madhesh said that the actor, in spite of being a politician, agreed to act without mixing political flavors.
Having reaped success in the box office it was decided to take additional prints of the film to meet the demand. It should be noted that Arasangam is Vijayakanth's 150th film!

Arasangam - Captain hasn't given up fully.
First thing first : Arasangam doesn't provide even 50% of what Perarasu provided. The screenplay looks good for a captain movie except the first one hour in which our captain romances the heroine, gets the help of his friend to marry her, sings a duet with her. In all these scenes, he looks the same way as he looks throughout the movie.
Heroine's brother convincing her pretty sister for a marriage with captain and her rejecting it just coz he is from PTA didn't look fresh at all. And 'ottavae illa'. Captain's looks - horrible esp in the duet song. He delivers most of the english dialogues well. Should I say ? 70%. But the rest of the 30% fall flat. In one scene, it goes like this 'Ava kitta naan SORRY kettatha sollu'. But he delivered it like 'Ava kitta naan SAREE kettatha sollu. I couldn't tolerate captain's portions in the first 1 hour. Vazhakkam pola muslim theeviravaadhi. But avar side villan thaan. He is not a main villan

Few knots in the first 1 hour was good.
hmm.. BTW, Our captain works in PTA (Police Training Academy). For the first time, I saw captain looking pretty ordinary in a police getup (enna captain ithu

)
When the movie shifts to canada, it was interesting. Though many hollywood movie sequences were copied here and there, the feel was OK. Anga captainkku help panna varra police ponnu - Super

enna HIP athu ? Ithula somba thooki potta bounce aaga chance irukku. Ammani kavarchi mazhai. Oru club dance la aen, police aana avanga *appadi* dance pannuraanga.
To be honest, the last 1 hour of the movie was interesting. The twists provided were quite convincing for me and a

to the director and CAPTAIN.

Neraya investigation scenes nalla irunthathu.

His performance was also more subtle in these scenes unlike his earlier movies in which he will find out every possible move of the villans.
But logicless sequences following one after the other in the second half spoils the feel. Captain's interrogation with a local doctor scene was ordinary. Villan letting the hero to get killed in the group of pigs reduced the value of the villan. avan enna maangaavaa ?

Villan role's scope was more and the guy Biju delivers well.

namba mansoor, anandraj etc maari illama, konjam different aana villan (for a captain movie). The forced sentiment towards the climax didn't leave the desired impact. Kadaisila captain youthkku advice vera pannuraaru. But konjam ramana style enbathaal uruthavillai.
Most importantly, FIGHTS were quite good. Paranthu paranthu adichaalum, captain adicha paarka nalla thaan irukku. esp back leg ah thookki thookki adikkirathu
Plus
----
* The last 1 hour of the movie. Athu thaan thookki nippaattuthu
* captain's performance in crucial scenes. nalla thaan panni irukkar
* FIGHTS - I liked them
* Villan scope - villanukkum BRAIN irukkunnu kaamichathukku
* FIGURES in the movie - Captain engae irunthu pudikkiraaroe. Esp the girl who comes in the second half. To Canada hubbers : unga naatula POLICE ippadi thaan irupaangala
* Climax - though it was ripped from DIE HARD 4. It looks good.
* Few dialogues...
Villan to Captain : enna pathi unakku theriyaathu. enakku pinnai oru kootamae irukku... 100, 1000 nnu. vialaivugal mosamaa irukkum
Captain to villan : Dei.. ennangada... allakkai la irunthu cutting adikiravan varaikkum enakku background irukku, irukku sollureenga
Minus
------
* Captain's romance with a young heroine. When will he pair with someone like RAdhika or any other senior actress who can also ACT well ?

They will fit his age and he will look more matured in his performance as well. A duet with them won't irritate the audience. Also, no more DUETS please
* Captain provides an explanation for everything to the police. Police ellam avvalavu appavigala allathu muttalgalah

It evoked laughter in many places. They could have cut short the dialogues
* Captain should seriously change his body language and should refine himself. If he is having an eye on the CM chair, he shouldn't forget that educated people will also VOTE.
* BGM and SONGS

But srikanth deva ... so, onnum solla mudiayala
Overall, If you could tolerate regular captain performence in the first 1 hour, then you can watch this movie. It is
WATCHABLE.
Myself and one more hubber (naagarigam karuthi peyar solla virumba villai

) saw Arasangam in coimbatore's Kavitha theatre. Captain padathukku figure oda ellam rendu jeevangal vanthirunthaainga. Theatre crowd wasn't impressive.
Movie will be a HIT in the B and C centres

Padam paarkalaam. I was little disappointed since I don't expect more from a captain movie. Perarasu was better.

CAPATAIN'S COMEBACK-TIMES OF INDIA
Vijaykanth’s performance in Arasangam has made the industry sit up and take notice. This is a comeback of sorts for the actorturned-politician, as Chennai Times finds out…
Last week, Captain Vijaykanth had enough reasons to smile; his latest film Arasangam has been declared a hit, and his fledgling political party DMDK officially announced that it is being wooed by major parties in the state for an alliance in next general elections.
Sitting in his kalyana mandapam-turned-party office at Koyembedu, Vijaykanth told Chennai Times: "I'm very happy that Arasangam has turned out to be a hit across the state. The film did not feature any political 'punchlines'. Instead, director Madhesh and producer LK Sudhish were particular that it be made as a pucca entertainer with a message. It worked, and my core audiences - the youth and women - liked the film a lot."
It is Vijaykanth's 150th film that was distributed by Pyramid Saimira in 178 screens, the highest ever for the popular action hero since he started out in 1979. "The technology in making a film has changed a lot over the years and marketing has become more aggressive. Arasangam turned profitable five days after its release. My hundredth film Captain Prabhakar, which was a super hit in the early 90s, took nearly a month to turn profitable due to limited prints. Cinema is changing for the better, and I always support new ideas and technology," he says.
The industry is amazed by the turnaround in Vijaykanth's career as an action hero which they thought would fade out after he joined politics. In Kollywood, there is a belief that those who join politics cannot churn out hits as their fan base gets divided. They point out that even MGR's film career took a nosedive after he launched a political party.

In the case of Vijaykanth too, four releases post politics - Sudesi, Perarasu, Dharmapuri and Sabari - were failures at the boxoffice. Now, Arasangam, which ironically means politics but has no political bombastic dialogues or snide remarks about the ruling party triumphed at the boxoffice because it was a racy entertainer. "They said that Captain has no pulling power in cities, but Arasangam has proved them wrong. He has proved that he is still a top draw at the boxoffice and this opening has come due to the young audiences who are proving to be his core votebank in cinema and politics," feels producer LK Sudish, Vijaykanth's brother-in-law.
Vijayakanth says with a big smile: "I took the calculated risk of riding two horses (cinema and politics) together. A lot of people, including my friends, told me that it won't work but it has paid off. I try not to mix cinema and politics as much as possible. I'm at my party office from morning till late afternoon, trying to sort out grievances. During my shooting schedules, I do not allow any party worker to come to the location or discuss party issues." Vijaykanth, right from the beginning of his career like MGR and Rajinikanth, was particular that he would do only mass films.
For his next film, he has chosen a village subject and titled it Engal Asan, which will appeal to his constituency. "If I played a criminologist in Arasangam, in Engal Asan I play the role of a bank manager who comes to a remote village and transforms it by helping the farmers who are under the clutches of feudal moneylenders. The film will be a total entertainer. Those who invest in the film producer, distributors and theatres should make profits too - that is my motto,"
says the actor, who refused to comment about his colleague Sarath Kumar entry into politics. Political analysts say that in the next parliament elections due in 2009, Vijaykanth and his party will play a crucial role. “ I will not rest till I achieve my goal," is all he’s willing to say. Captain cool indeed!

'Arasangam' to speak in Hindi
Vijayakanth's 'Arasangam' has made it big at the box office. Director Madesh is happy to have delivered his best considering this to be Vijayakanth's 150th film.
The movie features Captain in the role of a instructor in Police Training College. Interestingly, Madesh is now gearing up to do the movie in Hindi.
Buzz is that Bollywood hero Ajay Devgan has been impressed by the storyline of 'Arasangam' that he has expressed his desire to do the Hindi version of the movie.

It looks like tomorrow (may 23) two of the main theaters in CBE will replace Arasangam with Pandi (Raghavendra lawrence starrer). Initially Arasangam released in 4 main theaters in CBE.
I am expecting a 30 day run atleast in 1 main theater, even though at this point of time Arasangam runs in profit for both Captain Cine Creation & Pyramid Saimira.
This is a best example to show that Captain never tries to show a film Hit. If it is not accepted by people, he won't pressurize theater owners to run his films for a particular period of time.

Production cost is less
Produced by Vijayakanth, so no salary for Vijayakanth.
Then the total salary for the entire team would be hardly 50 Lakhs.
Mostly, the expense would be for film making & in this compared to other Captain films no much explosion & breakage.
Then film released in more no. of screens (178, as told by captain a week before in an interview), had a good opening.

As far as ArasAnggam concern, its not 1 day we are talking about. It has been running for the third week now (successfully). I'm little unclear why it has to be declared a Super Hit ONLY in 4th week.

Arakonam had lots of VK fans few years before. There was a movie of VK with Ranjitha which in the opening week.. I had to stand and watch the movie

Those were long back.
Around 50 could have been there in theater which is quite considering the number of weeks and the current situation. People did like the movie too :P
bye
Hope r_r moves the thread to 2 more pages before i come tomorrow.

After successfully completing 25 Days

, ARASANGAM is out of main theaters.
But, as many other Captain's films, it will be shown in one or another local theaters frequently.
This could be one of the last few posts in this thread
ARASANGAM -

Vijayakanth is a happyman
IndiaGlitz [Friday, May 30, 2008]
Captain Vijayakanth is happy and relieved at the success of his 150th film ‘Arasangam’.
Directed by Madesh, the movie features Vijayakanth as an instructor in a police college, who cracks a major crime in foreign soil.
With his recent films taking a beating at the box-office, the runaway success of ‘Arasangam’ has brought cheers on his face.
A busy politician, Vijayakanth is shooting for ‘Engal Aasaan’ next. He plays a bank man in the movie.
My heart beats for variety
, he says and adds, and ‘my cop films are strikingly different from others.'
On ‘Arasangam's’ success, he says, “It would've been a bigger hit if I had the time to promote the film properly but I've been busy with my political appointments and I'm trying to fit everything into a day”.
