Real police officer in 'Yogi'
IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 10, 2008]
Director Ameer starrer ‘Yogi’ has a story revolving around a life of gangsters with Ameer playing a dada living in a slum area. The director, who dons the led role in the film, writes the story, screenplay, and dialogues, while Subramaniam Siva directs the movie.
When you make a movie based on rowdies, there is little chance that you could avoid police encounters. ‘Yogi’, which does deal with encounter, has had a unique idea of making a real encounter specialist act in the film.
Ameer has requested Jafar Sait, a renowned police officer, who had gunned down dreaded gangsters like ‘Muttai Kan’ Ravi and ‘Manal Medu’ Shankar in Thanjavore and Thiruchi areas, to act in the film. Jafar, though initially refused to act, is now trying to get permission from the government.
If he appears in the film, it would be first of its kind.

ameer is a self confessed kamal fan.
may be he will change the title of the movie since kamal hassan has already come with a similar title (marma yogi) for his next movie.
two movies releasing in close succession having a similar title is not a good thing for the movie releasing second, and unfortunately marmayogi will be at the receiving end if yogi gets any bad publicity which in all probability will release earlier (thanks to the relatively low budget)

Here comes another sad story (after Kikujiro connection for Nandhalaa), this time it is for Yogi
Ameer’s inspiration from South Africa film!
August 27, 2008
Director Ameer who is donning the greasepaint for Yogi for the first time has also written the story, screenplay and dialogues while Subramania Siva is directing the film. This film is said to be revolving around the life of a gangster. Recently there was a buzz that Yogi has been inspired from the South African film Tsotsi which won the nomination for the best foreign language film in Golden Globe awards in 2006. The film also won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2006. Tsotsi deals with the life of a gangster and the stills of Yogi bear a lot of resemblance to the South African film. However, director Subramania Siva has said that Yogi has drawn some inspiration from the African film. Further, the stills of Yogi, released to the media, bear a strong resemblance of Tsotsi.

Agreed partly Selva. But my concern is why they don't accept it openly? is it because they fear about their image or they are afraid of copyright violations? I wish these new upcoming directors don't watch world movies at all.
On this issue, Mahendran still stands out and I admire him more than anybody else. I don't know if at all he is inspired by any movies. Among the new directors, Bala hasn't gone in this direction yet.
Anyway waiting to see how Ameer comes up.

Yes, I believe it too. His movies made the difference in tamil cinema after long long time and he laid out the path for the new comers. He doesn't succumb to the commercial pressure from producers/distributors that happens so frequently when someone climbs up the ladder. athukke oru salute adikalaam to Bala.

Ameer fasts for 'Yogi'
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, October 22, 2008]
Director Ameer has now taken two big steps in his life as an actor and a producer with his latest venture, directed by Subramania Siva.
Ameer stands synonymous to the word dedication, by implying meticulous efforts to bring out this much delayed movie at the earliest. The maker of Paruthi Veeran is now undergoing a taut diet, not to pose a six pack but to shape himself up for the character of a load lifter (cooli).
The question upon his delayed movie makes him retort, "I am not wasting another producer's money as this is my own production. And I don't know how to make movies in just 40 or 50 days. I usually make my movies based on my knowledge and my personal formulae. If someone is affected by this delay then I am ready to answer them."
On a reply note, 'Due to changes in the locales for shooting has made this time lapse. I can assure that
the movie will be released for Pongal.'
Ameer speaking about his workout says, 'I am undergoing these workouts to portray the character aptly and not to compete with the washboard abs displayed by other stars. Just chappathis and eggs are my daily meal. When I drill my other heroes, I should be working at least to this extent. Shouldn't I?'
On a glum note he adds, 'I couldn't even eat a plate of Briyani for Ramzan.' Anyway, hard work never fails to repay. Cheer up Ameer!!

Yogi will not be released for Pongal
"Ameer, up and running for Yogi!
December 18, 2008
Ameer is free from the legal tangles that haunted him after his alleged provocative speech during the Rameswaram protests in support of Srilankan Tamils. Which precisely means that Yogi, with him in the lead, will be dusted from the cans and the shoots will begin soon. Ameer says he is focused on finishing up the project that has been long pending now. The movie, expected to be out for Pongal, will be postponed since Ameer was not available for the shoots.
Yogi will be as endearing as Paruthiveeran, Ameer was quoted as saying. While Paruthiveeran told the story of a rustic waywardly village, Yogi tells the story of a down to earth man in the slums of Chennai. Directed by Subramania Siva, Yogi has Snehan’s lyrics who also makes a cameo in the movie."

Ameer’s Yogi is red hot!
By Moviebuzz | Monday, 02 November , 2009, 09:08
http://sify.com/movies/tamil/fullstory.php?id=14917743
Guess the hottest film in the trade? It is Ameer’s Team Work Productions Yogi, directed by Subramaniyam Shiva.
The buzz on the film is so good that at one time Sun Pictures were keen to buy it.
Now the latest we hear is three areas for Yogi theatrical rights in Tamil Nadu has been sold, at a decent price.
The film is now undergoing final mixing, and first copy should be ready by November 12, after which the film will be ready for censor.
As of now Ameer is planning to release his debut film as a hero on November 27. If he manages to get a solo release, the film will definitely take a good opening.
One of the songs in the film a mass number tuned by Yuvan is already a hit.

Its Ameer Vs Vijay clash at box-office
There is every chance that Ameer, whose 'Yogi' has been delayed beyond a reasonable point of time, might have a box-office clash with Vijay, whose 'Vettaikkaran' may also be releasing around the same time. Ameer was planning to release his film on 27th November but unfortunately, hasn't yet completed the film.
Ameer Vs Vijay
The inordinate delay in completing the film might lead him to postpone the release to the first or second week of December, sources say. If it happens, it would have to reckon with Vijay's 'Vettaikkaran', slated for a December 18th release. Industry seniors are said to be advising Ameer to avoid such a clash, as it would only boomerang badly on him.
Ameer, on his part, maintains that he "doesn't intend giving anybody competition and doesn't think of others as his competitors." Ameer further adds that 'his (Vijay's) style is different from that of mine; let both the films enjoy a successful run at the box office!" Distributors, though, aren't amused by Ameer's logic and explanation.
Tailpiece: Both Kalaignar TV and Sun TV (whose Sun Pictures has acquired the distribution rights of 'Vettaikkaran') have reportedly assured Ameer of all possible help in promoting his 'Yogi'!

The main story of Yogi is based on the slum area in Chennai and extensively shot in the slum area. Ameer put in a lot of effort for the movie by reducing his weight with regular gym exercises so that he can suit the role better.
The movie Yogi with Ameer and Madhumita in the lead role is said to made at a budget of 12 crore and expected to be a deepavali release.
The action sequences in the movie are shot on par with a Hollywood movie. Two of the fights in the movie have been shot for 51 days and were high risk ones for everyone involved. Director Subramania Siva is the director of Yogi.
Lyricist Snehan will also be seen in a character role as Ameer’s friend in the movie. After this movie , Ameer will be directing Jayam Ravi in the movie Kannapiraan which is a Madurai based story, but not about the aruva culture. It will show the non-violent side of Madurai.

Yogi to strut at Dubai, Durban and Berlin - From Behindwoods.com
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even before its release, Yogi has started its tryst with the festival circuits around the world. It has been confirmed that Yogi is an official entry in the competition section at the Dubai Film Festival to be held on December 9. Ameer and director Subramaniam Siva will be present at the event. This was announced by Ameer himself today at Hotel Green Park in a press meet.
It doesn’t end there; Yogi is also slated to be part of the Durban and Berlin international film festivals. With Yogi, Ameer scores a hat trick of sorts of international acclaim. His previous films Paruthiveeran and Ram too were screened at a few international film festivals.
The entry of Yogi into the festival circuit was in fact not planned by its makers. Suhasini Mani Ratnam was instrumental in making it happen. She felicitated a meeting between the makers of Yogi and the coordinator of the Dubai Film Festival, Meenakshi Shetty who was reportedly very eager to see the movie. Ameer and Subramaniam Siva were a bit circumspect and said that they had made a commercial film which might not be the kind that the film festival organizers are looking for. But, upon the insistence of Suhasini and Meenakshi Shetty, a private screening of the pilot version of the film was organized in Chennai for a very small audience. After watching the whole movie, Meenakshi Shetty is said to have invited them over to Dubai to be a part of the film festival.
One of the conditions for entry into the Dubai Film festival is that the entrant movie should not have been released in foreign countries. This has made Ameer refrain himself from selling the foreign rights of Yogi until its debut at the Film festival on December 9.
So, Yogi is making all the right sounds. With the movie releasing tomorrow and the film already on its way to international acclaim, the makers will sure feel upbeat about its chances at the box office. Let’s see how Yogi fares both at the domestic and international level.

Ban on Yogi?
Although Yogi is all set to release tomorrow, November 27, 2009, it seems like there’s still some unfinished business for Ameer to take care of. Producer Gnanavelrajan has filed a petition in the Chennai high court today seeking to halt the movie’s release.
The petition states that Ameer, who was sold the Madurai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore distribution rights of Paruthiveeran had not paid his dues to the tune of Rs. 1.55 crores. The petition goes on to claim that Ameer had made profits out of the transaction since Paruthiveeran was successful and these finances were also invested for the production of Yogi.
The court is yet to recommend any action on the petition.

Yogi takes the festival route!
By Moviebuzz | Friday, 27 November , 2009, 08:04
Ameer, with just one Paruthiveeran has become a brand in international film circuit.
His latest Yogi has been invited to the Dubai Film Festival and will also be screened at Berlin and Durban festivals.
Ameer met the media on Thursday afternoon and waxed eloquent on how his new film directed by Subramaniam Shiva is being given the red carpet at international festivals. Ameer and Subramaniam Shiva will be in Dubai on December 9, when Yogi will be screened there at the festival.
The ace director who is turning actor with Yogi confesses: ?We had no plans to sent Yogi, which has far too many commercial elements like long drawn out fight scenes. But Suhasini Maniratnam coordinated it along with Meenakshi Shedde, journalist and film festival consultant and curator and Dorothee Wenner, programme consultant for the Berlin and Dubai international film festivals. They saw a pilot version of the film and insisted on sending it to the festivals with fight scenes trimmed and songs uncut.?
Ameer says that the film will not have a simultaneous release with the rest of the world as it is one of the clauses for international festivals, that the film should only have been released in the domestic market.
Meanwhile the buzz on Yogi is so good that the film is releasing in 225 screens across Tamil Nadu, the biggest ever release for a film with a new hero!

YOGI MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods review board
Starring: Ameer, Madhumitha, Snehan, Swathi
Direction: Subramaniam Siva
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Production: Team Work Production
Ameer’s Yogi, as presumed, is a multi-layered gritty saga set in the mean slums of Chennai where the mere act of survival is a mammoth task in the despicable living conditions. The movie opens up a Pandora’s Box of lives of the children of the lesser God and as scene after scene unfurl, you get a dreadful insight into the world of those people hidden beneath their cringe-worthy surroundings.
Ameer is a slum-dweller who graduates from petty crimes to murder for better revenues. During one of his assignments, he makes way with a car and inadvertently bestowed with the ownership of a child. The child’s mother gets hurt in an accident after the car stealing and the reluctant Ameer is left with the custody of the toddler. It takes no time for him to abandon the kid in one of the street corners, but he holds himself back and brings the kid home for he had never forgiven himself for the loss of a life in a similar manner earlier in his life.
Though Swathi and Vincent Ashokan are married, the toddler that is born to Swathi is not Vincent Ashokan’s. With the affluent Swathi now in the hospital, Vincent decides to seize the opportunity to put an end to the
toddler’s life to inherit his wife’s wealth. Ameer crosses roads with Vincent in his hunt and unintentionally kills his aide, played by lyricist Snehan. The rest of the movie forms the cop’s hunt for Ameer, Swathi’s quest for her kid and Vincent Ashokan’s search for the kid (for different reasons). After playing out a near-gripping tale, Yogi culminates in a rather theatrical climax.
Ameer gets into the skin of a petty goon who gradually becomes a criminal, accidentally owning a baby. The razor sharp dialogues in his coarse voice accentuate his performance and the way he carries a repulsive past with him can be quite depressing for the viewer. His father character, played by journalist Devarajan, is impeccable. He metes out domestic violence at his wife, unapologetic about the death of his little daughter and uses his wife’s dead body to make money. Quite disconcerting and it doesn’t feel that Devarajan is a newcomer.
Another revelation in the movie is (actually there are two, another being Snehan who effortlessly portrays a mean thug) Madhumitha, playing the role of a single mother whose husband walks out on her. Her eyes speak volumes than actually her words and when she is forced to breast-feed the baby of a stranger, she becomes the epitome of motherhood. A picture of whatever little love is left in the world.
The scene in which Ameer inconsiderately leaving condensed milk in the baby’s lips to make it stop crying from hunger and returning to find the baby’s mouth infested with ants is really unsettling.
On the flip side, there is a liberal dosage of melodrama; the way Devarajan gets killed can be off-putting, Ameer’s efforts at engaging the baby can seem slipped in for no reason and a few unwarranted fight sequences are out of place. Director Subramania Siva seems to have faltered while trying to make the movie for the masses. This often dilutes the substance of the movie, but largely, Siva has succeeded in the direction process.
Yogi is definitely not a time pass movie, it can be distressing. On the other hand, if you are looking for a heavy duty movie with some brilliant performances, try it. It wouldn’t hurt to see the darker side of human life once in a while. It tells you the tryst of happiness with life’s strange play of fate, when hope gets crushed.
Verdict: Heavy weight saga!

Movie is worth watching. There were some brilliant scenes which received applause from audience
But I do not want to write a detailed post here as the movie is 100% Agmark Copy of TSOTSI. As already mentioned by AravindMano, it's a frame by frame copy. Shamelessly lifted. What the hell!
Yuvan's BGM was brilliant and his sarangi music so beautifully conveyed the emotions in many scenes. Kudos!
Background score of Yogi is sure to take Yuvan one step further. Matured. Brilliant!
Cinematography was great!
I'm wondering how Dare Ameer sent this to Dubai film festival and the movie is to be screened in a week or two by the international jury! aappu ready??????
As GM says in Mannan: aanalum unakku romba dhairyam pa. copy adichuttu, intl. film fest'ku anuppura.
Kosuru thagaval: TSOTSI won the Oscar for best foreign language movie (or nominated).

ofcourse, ever art piece needs inspiration either from real life or within art but to do ctrl-c, ctrl-v work - its not commendable......adapting someone else's idea is not wrong at all but the "value add" that this creator gives is very important......if it is nil - then he cant be called a creator at all.....

This is exactly what Ameer has done in Yogi.
Scale, I repeat. There is noting wrong in getting inspired. Taking the core, or narrative style or the one liner and developing one's own screenplay and giving a new shape is very much accepted.
But in Yogi, about 60 - 70 minutes (approx) of the movie has been blatantly copied (frame by frame, including few camera angles). And the most important thing to note here is, Tsotsi runs only for 90+ minutes.
So Ameer has changed the climax, has added a flashback, two songs and couple of fight sequence to make it a two and half hour movie.
The most irritating thing is, he claims that the story is original and he has not seen Tsotsi at all. How cheap!

Well my point is even if its an inspiration (the word, meaning can be interpreted very easily) originator/source has to be credited. Even a film from Zimbabwe do this. Check CT, MSV's song is used in a French film and its damn difficult to recognize the song (1.12) which was played in a cafeteria's background but they have rightfully credited the source. Certainly had Goosebumps to see MSV's name roll over the credits with all other international artists. 75yrs of TFla ethana padathula credit pannaangannu sollunga paarpom. SHAME!

Yeah. unga post pAthen. I was so happy.

by the way, its nice to know that ARR credits. I don't mean to say that ARR never credits but this news which has been mentioned is a sweet one about ARR sending a cheque whenever he uses those tunes.

Yeah. Ameer is credited for Story
Another biggest comedy. Sub Siva told this in an interview that the movie was inspired. But he did not want to buy the rights from the original producer as it will cost very high

Without any hesitation, Ameer replied, " Enna poruthavaraikkum idhu oru classic ".

"Seermevum koovathiley" - A modern day interpretation of "koothu"stage play. Father and Guru have stunned us with a medley in pithamagan (nothing to the composers credit) but here the Son & Sishyan have gone 800 miles ahead. A "Raa koothu" in a criminal background. Yogi Yogi thaan adhu.... Cleverly done!
[Yogi is a shameless stolen $ of Tsotsi]

Thought I did not understand you post clearly, let me give my point!
Seermayvum is actually a remix of many yesteryear songs
as told by the Yogi team.
