Category: Best Supporting Actress
This is a new category in Hub Awards, introduced this year to recognise the efforts of supporting actors, who sometimes are the backbone to a film. Throughout the ages, such supporting actors and actresses have become specialised, doing specific roles of being mothers, fathers, sisters and sometimes brothers.
Other roles have included friends, and even second leads.
As in previous years 2007 saw several contendants for excellent performance of supporting roles:
Andrea in Pachaikili Muthucharam was the suffering wife of Sarathkumar blisssfully unaware of her husband's waywardness and rudely brough back to reality.
Yesteryear heroine
Nadhiya, who can give today's heroines a run for their money was exceptional in (Thamirabharani.
Current screen goddess
Namitha too attracted our Hubbers, especially when she made the anti-hero suddenly become a goody in azhagiya thamizh magan
Nayagan heroine
Saranya, who has turned out to be one of the better charachter actress these days shone in Kreedom.
Who can forget TV personality
Swarnamalya's excellent portrayal as Jothika's friend in Mozhi, a powerful role for her after alai paayuthE.
And finally we have Bombay import
Tanisha as the "other woman" in Unnale Unnale.
Who was the Hubbers' ultimate choice........?

Swarnamalya gets the first-ever Best Supporting actress Hub award for her worthy performance in Mozhi. It happens to be her first Hub Award too. She was a clear favorite with over 54% votes. Saranya comes second with only 14% votes. Tanisha and Andrea settle for a tied third spot with 10% votes.
Congrats!

Category: Best Supporting Actor 2007
Similar to Best Supporting Actress award which saw Swarnamalya winning her first ever Hub Award, this category chooses to recognise the contributions of other artistes besides the leads.
Contenders for this category include Azhagam Perumal for Katradhu Thamizh, a very deserving artise who began his career as a much feared villain.
Prabhu who is now doomed to play seocndary characters was excellent as the IO in Billa 207.
Prakash Raj, mostly recognised as a reputable villain handled his role ably in Mozhi as the lead's best buddy, with plenty of humour and warmth.
Rajkiran, another hero of the 80s was the perfect father in Kreedom (reminscent of supportive Raguvaran's role in Mugavari?)
Ramesh, as the friend in Kalloori and Saravanan as the cool uncle in Paruthi Veeran, were the other contenders.
And the winner is....

Prakash Raj proves he can excel even in non-villainish roles by winning the Supporting Actor award for his cameo in Mozhi. He received 46% votes..! Widely expected Sevvaazhi Saravanan put up a good fight but eventually managed only 27% votes for the runner up. The veteran of cameo's Raj Kiran got 15% votes and the third place.
Congrats Chellam!

Best Debut 2007
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. While some gape at the camera while lisping their lines some kick open their gates like they've been here all the time.
So who were the folks who started with flair last year ?
The contenders are:
The impressive Vinay who played the henpecked lover-boy with ease in UnnaalE unaalE.
The buoyant Tanisha who played the tomboy, who unlike Tamil film standards, remains so till the very end in the same film.
Anjali who came up with a natural performance as Anandhi in one of the finest films of last year: kattradhu thamizh
One who started with a big bang was Karthi playing the title role in Paruththiveeran, with the ease of a seasoned performer.
The interesting nomination of course was the Chennai -28 gang. They and their film will be remembered for breathing life into the expression that 'the whole is greater than the sum of the parts'.
Other contenders are the (typically named ?) Meenakshi from Karuppasaami Kuththagaikkaarar and Andrea, who was interestingly cross-cast in PachchaikkiLi muthhuchcharam.
So who wil it be.........

Best Villain 2007
Tamil cinema fans now reached the level of appreciating not only heros ,but Villains as well equally . Unlike olden days had only few notable villians did their usual brand of villainsm ,current villians are in a postion to show variety in order to satisfy the expectations of the current audience.
For year 2007 ,the Contenders are..
With his trade mark villainism , Daniel balaji displayed a character who wanted to be equally dominat dada like his brother ,with his usual look with long hair.
A naughty and jovial Joythika turned out to be a villain character in Pachai Kili Muthucharam and gave a powerful performance.
Kalapavan mani known for his Villianism mixed with humour and mimicry , gave yet another display in Vel.
A well crafted character of a Dada with possible ethics in his profession , Kishore Kumar given a very casual performance in Polladhavan.
Pachai kili Muthucharam had another notable villian character ,who takes advantage of a middel class mentality of a Hero character , a reasonably good performance from Milind Soman
Director Vasanth came out with yet another unique Psyco character ,whose impotent and possesiveness make him a criminal , exceptionally done by Nithin Sathya ..He desevers appreciation by taking this character ,when he is in the starting stage of his carrier.
Castism and rural arrogance with ignorance and pesudo -pride is still exists in our soceity ..Ameer crafted such a character in Paruthiveeran and PonVannan gave a life for it .
And finally Suman got a previlage to be a villian for SuperStar in Sivaji ..Suman has delivered what Shankar expected from him .
So ,who will be the one choosen as best...

Best Director 2007
Director is the Key for any movie's success.
We have 10 nominations for this prestigious Award. They are
1.
Ameer (Paruthi Veeran)
Started with Mounam Paesiyathe, got many accolades for his Ram and continued his good form with ParuthiVeeran.
Will he be the one
2.
Gautam Menon (Pachaikili Muthucharam)
Though the movie was not a big success it was appreciated by many. Gautham Menon handled such a different and controversial
subject in a nice manner. Will he be the winner
3.
Jeeva (Unnale Unnale)
One of the promising young director who is no more. But he made impact from this movie among youngsters
4.
Nishi kanth (Evano Oruvan)
He cannot be neglected like the title of his movie. Well made and well performed movie and much credit goes to him.

hub voters
Few more hours will reveal.
9.
Vetrimaaran (Polladhavan)
Excellent and different movie with Dhanush's wonderful performance. Another new comer. good for Tamil cinema.

Vishnuvardhan (Billa)
Remake movie. difficult task. But handled the task with his brilliant execution. Can he get this award ?
And the award goes to..........

The much awaited last three awards will be presented soon! 2007 was grand year for Tamil filmdom as several high quality films were produced. Besides dada and love stories, the year also saw good variety in terms of stories as well as in screenplays.
And now, with great pleasure, we present you the ...
Nominees for Best Film 2007!
Sathyaraj acted in a number of films last year, but the one that attracted least attention but obtained the most acclaim was 9 Roopaai Nottu
A film by youth for youth - Chennai 60028 - surpassed all expectations and drew big crowds and good reviews. The everyday story of a bunch of middle class kids, spinned around the game of cricket found favour among many.
Madhavan's home production Evano Oruvan was the only film that was released in recent years without any songs. There was no separate comedy track either. Remade into Tamil by the original director, it served as a showcase for Maddy's acting skill.
Jeeva known for his different get-ups donned that of a student of Tamil in Katradhu Thamizh. Due to some internal turmoil together with not being given due rcognition, he goes on a rampage...
Ajith's Kreedom was awaited with bated breath by his fans which gave ample opportunity to showcase his acting skills. One of the rare remake movies of Ajith, the relationship between a father and son was beautifully captured in the film.
With the object of the hero's love being deaf and dumb, the film is ironically titled Mozhi. It was a fitting curtain call for top heroine Jothika and she ended her reign majestically. Prakash Raj as the producer and co-actor of this film, contributed immensely to its success.
Surya's brother had a fantastic debut in Ameer's Paruthi Veeran. A simple village story, it shone due to the screenplay and the disturbing ending. Deservingly, Ameer is the winner of Hub Award for best director.
Polladhavan launched Danush in a way never seen before. The prowess of the director was to take a simple theme of stolen motor bike and converting it into a suspenseful story.
And finally there is the eternal love story given a new flavour played by new leads in Unnaale Unnaale. The songs in the film were super-hits and created a lot of anticipation. Its director Jeeva passed away and the film paid tribute to this upcoming director.
The Best Film 2007 award goes to.......

One of the most toughly-contested polls this year. The first to go out of the race was "Unnale Unnale" (1% votes). Dhanush' bike lost steam halfway and bowed out with 3%. So did 9 Roopai Nottu too. (Good guess SP!) Evano oruvan went like a somebody next with just 5%. Unfortunately, the impressive Katradhu Thamizh also had to quit with 5% votes. (Devar Magan, did you campaign enough?
)
There were still 4 movies hotly contesting for the topspot: Chennai 28, Kreedom, Mozhi, Paruthi Veeran. First bad news for Thala Fans. They did put up a good show but it wasn't enough for Kreedom that exited next with 15% votes. Paruthi Veeran had a good pick-up but alas it was 'ayyayo' for it next with 17% votes. And then there were two...
It was an interesting showdown with good polling for both, and there was no clear leader till the last day. Did you know that the winner was decided only in the last few hours of polling. And that is..

Mozhi it is..! A wholesome mix of sentiment, comedy, songs, powerful performances from an experienced star cast and of course Radha mohan's screenplay and direction seemed to have clinched it for the movie. It received 25 votes (24%) and the well-deserved award. It was tough luck for Chennai 28.. It came out as Chennai 23 and lost to mozhi by a whisker of 2 votes.
Anyway isn't it an impressive show by an almost entirely new cast? Better luck next time Charan & venkat Prabhu..
Congrats mozhi team!

After seeing the overwhelming support and to some extent the hype created here I was expecting Chennai 28 to win, though I thought Mozhi would be a close contender. My vote was for Mozhi as Chennai 28 did not appeal much to me. I think it was a tailor made movie for Chennaites and we Sri Lankans couldn't relate ourselves much with it (as far as I remember the movie was almost a wash out here in SL) Mozhi was not great either but out of the 3 ( the other being the most over hyped PV
), I preferred Mozhi - at least for my favourite Jo's sake

IMHO, Kreedam didnt deserve the best movie award.
. I myself though liked the movie but i didnt vote for the movie. I voted for Pollathavan for its screenplay (mostly) and lead characters acting especially Dhanush and KK. AFAIK selva would have voted for Chennai 28 (?) and i have no complaints for kreedom not being chosen the best movie ...

. I don't want him to win for Kireedom this year. Let us wait for some other movie along the lines of Vaali, Varalaaru etc. (Ofcourse, even after that we won't get votes from non-ajith fans mostly
)

A big no for the question regarding Pasupathi...
But, regarding Ajith's hub award for Varalaaru, a Big Yes... It came MOSTLY from Ajith fans.
Bcoz, some people just don't like him 2 win/ bash him no matter how excellent his performance is.
This applies to hub as well and u know dat bro...

OK Bro .Point taken
But Selva always sounds like There are many people who always purposely wanted to degrade Ajith .. IMO ,It is nothing special with Ajith in this case ..It applies to all Stars ,not just Ajith.

I think chennai - 28 team must have chosen 'kitti velayattu" instead of cricket. That would have made every villager to appreciate the movie. It would have been appreciated with realistic, natural, zero heroism etc tags with much more intensity.

He did the correct choice ..'Kitty puL' appealing people (like me) among audience are minority ,where as cricketing appealing audience are majority ..That is why Chennai 28 was success.

Joe,
I think a theme like Chennai - 28 might not have appealed to everyone. I think that is the reason why it is the best film for me in this year. That is what I was pointing there. Had they gone for *kitti* it could have appealed to those minority people as well. Athaan ! Let us hope venkat learns and takes a movie that appeals to everyone

There's something much much more engrossing about Sennai-28 than just cricket. The game could very much be any other sport, and still it could retain the essence. But "Cricket" being the most accesible, and nostalgic spot, would have appealed to a lot of 'em!

Roshan,
Disagree with you fully !
IMO, it is a way better film than many other entertainers that stick to the regular stuff.
Mozhi was good. Now, I feel that it is overrated a lot. Same goes to PKMC. Haven't seen Katrathu thamiz. I never support a movie just coz it has village theme or chennai based theme. I didn't like Oram Po. Trust me, I could relate to chennai - 28 a lot more than many other entertainers.
Mozhi is an entertainer that appeals to popcorn and family crowd. No wonder, it is winning. But I thought, chennai 28 was leading. Anyway, chennai 28 deserved it lot more than many other movies

Dont compare CDI-Chak De India with this silly Gilli and Ch-28
Have u ever seen CDI-----Wt a bravo movie with no commercial elements that too in Bollywood
No heroism
No skinshow
No silly comedy/double meaning dialogues
No hero buildup and unnecessary hero fights
No heroines and duets
No kuthu songs
No 5 songs + 5 fights
Especially no punch dialogues
and a lot more not in this film

One sample for why i rate C-28 very highly.
There is a scene in which Raghu (Jai) discusses "technik" (strategy/tactics) with the others like "ivanukku sodukku ball potta out aiduvaan" etc - mini outdoor gym madhiri irukkum, outside the ground.
ovvoruthan ovvonnu pannitruppaan. For a first time director, that was an awesome scene IMO. Very dynamic, characters moving, seemingly chaotic, everybody speaking at the same time and yet superbly executed.
Almost all the scenes were made like this. oru real time fluidity irukkum
Humor, top-class acting, irreverence, honest script, meesic - in short, remba nalla experience... And mukkiyama because certain routine things were NOT there made it even better

If not for anything, Jothika's acting should be awarded for inspiring our hub's emoticon,
Of course, it's "argh" for us, but it's the only big expression of our Jo madam, she patented it for anger to sober. Only the tilt of the head varies with minute variations.

One more action to be taken in public interest:
Anybody in the cine field or outside who uses the following term will very "feel" afterwards
[Report such usages to Captain's group]
1. "Bubbly" character (Poor Pasupathy who hasnt exactly mastered the language said "babblimaas" meaning this

2. "Girl/Boy next door"
3. "Happy-go-lucky"
4. "Sentiment" (used where superstition should be used)

</Dig>
I would have rated Ch-28 even higher if the movie was made sans songs... For a script/screen-play like Ch-28 there is no place for songs, IMHO... Also, the love part between one of the characters could have either ben avloided altogether or at least toned down a little bit than the level of significance to it...
Nevertheless it was a very good movie especially for a first time director...
IMHO, the movie would have been elevated to a "great one" it they would have stripped off the songs completely (as the script really warranted it!)

SRK proves that he is also willing to try once in a while doing movies with experimental scripts like Dil Se, Paheli, CDI...
Btw, with due respect to Joe's performance in Mozhi, IMHO, Priyamani deserves the best actress award!
But I also know that Joe wil win the vote since she was leading the race by a mile, thanks to our hubbers!

There were originally 10 contestants. Bhavana was pulled out when she couldnt even win one vote.
Of the remaining nine, six of them could only muster single digit votes, thus pulling out of the race. The six are Sangeetha, Anjali, Asin, Padmapriya, Shreya and Sneha.
The final three top contenders were: Jyothika, Priyamani and Tamanna (in alphabetical order).
Incidentally, all three acted in some of the best films of 2007!
Result in next post....

Here is the time for the Grand Finale !!
Who will be crowned with
Hub Award for Best Actor 2007
The nominees...
Ajith (Kreedom ,Billa )
Ultimate Star is the darling of the mass now ! With his remarkable performances in Kreedom and Billa ,very much different from one another ,once again a strong contender for best actor award .. Thala fan base is a great strength to make it.
Danush (Polladhavan)
Once people used to say "Intha moonjiyellam..." ,then came "Noonjaan maathiri irunthuttu..." ,But Danush continues to put them in shame ..This boy compensate all his weeknesses with his expressive face ,even convince his action sequence .. Just a single scene in pollathavan ..he says 'Poduda" is good enough as a proof ..can he make it this time ?
Jeeva (Katrathu thamizh )
One of the promising actors among younger generation ,Jeeva never fails to impress audience with his selection of movies ..He is going strong in strengthening his remarkable place in successful performer list .. katrathu Thamizh avarukku viruthai petru tharumaa ?
Karthi (Paruthi Veeran)
Nobody could have expected this overseas educated , son of Markandeyar will introduce himself as a arragont vilage rowdy with adithadi ,kuththattam and roughness ..Surely he met the expectation with his stunning performance ..Karthiyin Keerthi Viruthai aLLumaa?
Madhavan (Evano oruvan)
One of the natural actors of Tamil cinema ,loved by almost all ,yet again come out with another neat performance as a middle class family man with social responsibility and self respect ..Will hubbers say "Maddy ..inthaa award-ai pidi"
Prithiviraj (Mozhi ,Sathampodathe)
This handsome actor had a great previlage to be a part of well made and critically acclaimed movies .. Lets see whether it is enough to catch the crown .
Rajini (Sivaji)
Super Star , a commercial Boss once again impressed auidence with his charismatic display in SHIVAJI .. pera ketta athirum ..Viruthu Uthirumaa ?
SathiyaRaj (Periyar ,9 Roopa Nottu)
A casual actor known for his lollu ,turned out to be a serious performer this year .. He got the dream role of Nadigar Thilagam .His performance in Periyar is defenitely a milestone of his carrier ..His transformation as Madhava padayachi in 9 roopa nottu is remarkable as well ..what hubbers think ?
Surya (Vel)
Once a lover boy ,now a village lion ..Is his performance satisfactory to audience?
Vijay (Pokkiri ,ATM)
With karam masala action performance in 'pokkiri' and dual role display in Azhagiya thamizh magan ,Can darling of commercial cinema be a choice of hubbers ?
And the winner is...

And now presenting you with the most anticipated award ...
Prelude to Best Actor 2007
First let's see those who have been knocked out. The greatest embarrassment was served on Surya. His mass appeal release of Vel, obviously had no appeal in Hub and he earns the distinction of not even getting one vote!
The second to go were two actors; one new and one senior.
Prithiviraj, who found favour in Mozhi only received 3% of the votes, probably due to his similar kind of acting. And talking of similar kind of acting, Vijay also had the dubious honour of sharing the same percentage as Prithviraj....!
Next to go is elite favourite Jeeva who could only muster 6% of the votes. Apparently his Katradhu Thamizh is not enough to make a mark at the awards. Katradhu kai alavu mattum pOlum.
Dhanush, although attempting an excellent portrayal in Polladhavan could get only 9% of the votes and saw an early exit. Chocolate hero Madhavan also received the same 9% and has been shown the boot by the hubbers.
If you work furiously on the combined percentages, you should be able to guess who goes out next.
Karthi who has already won Best Debut award also impressed Hubbers to contend for this award. He received an honourable 10%. Sathyaraj joined Karthi in also getting the third place with the same 10%
And so, that leaves us with just two candidates.....
...more in next post!

As cautioned in the run-up to the polling exercise, what you see is not what you get.....
We tracked and traced several votes from the same person... (idhulaiyumaa kalla vOttu!
) We even banned some of the duplicate id's.
After doing the necessary audit, we discovered two leading candidates for the award.....
you are all right!
the contest is between Rajni and Ajith!
Who will win the prestigious award? Rajni for the world super hit Sivaji or Ajith for the classic Malayalam remake Kreedom/80s movie remake Billa?

Ajith received 22% of the votes and was the firm winner of Best Actor award 2007, making it a hattrick as far as The Hub is concerned.
Rajni Kanth received 12% of the votes, for the runner-up place.

Because Next year AWARD will go only TO PADMASHREE alone.

How come CH-28 would have won the hearts of ppl if it had lost the poll?
By people you meant only yourself is it?
Leave alone our forumhub, even otherwise "Mozhi" alongside "PV" are the much appreciated movies of 2007 than CH-28.
CH-28 is a good movie but definitely no good than Mozhi pr PV, IMO

Till last date of the polls, CH-28 was leading. At the end, MOZHI had won. He had clearly specified that in his post
He is happy that it had won the hearts of the people though mozhi had won the POLL

Sorry for the delay, but it's time for hubber award.. - the award for a hubber who made the most number of correct predictions in the nominations.
There were quite a few who had 6 predictions correct: viraajan, karthik_sa2, Sanguine Sridhar, Wibha,sat_srini . But the best score was 7 and two hubbers got it.
Their names and who finally won the hubber award.. -- in next post.

Sorry for the delay, but it's time for hubber award.. - the award for a hubber who made the most number of correct predictions in the nominations.
There were quite a few who had 6 predictions correct: viraajan, karthik_sa2,
Sanguine Sridhar, Wibha,sat_srini . But the best score was 7 and two hubbers got it.
Their names and who finally won the hubber award.. -- in next post.

The two best forecastors were: Devar Magan & ThalaNass
(Devar Magan: No wild guesses pls.. I'm sure selvakumar & Roshan know themselves that they didn't score anywhere near the top.)
ThalaNass predicted 7 awards correctly as his first nomination, but failed to hit in "Best Film" and "Best Villain" (Thala was his first villain nomination!) awards. But Devar Magan did better. He got 7 first nominations correct and predicted the other two also as second choices. So he nearly made a prefect score.. good job!
