I think the duo worked in Unnai Saranadainthen. I liked the movie. Both did well in front of the camera. Let's see what magic they can whip up here.

Actually there are 2 heroines in the movie. I know only one of the heroines name. Her name is Vijayalakshmi, Daughter of Director Agathiyan of the National Award winning film Kaadhal Kottai with Ultimate Star Ajith in the lead. She was also the anchor of "Hello Tamizha" along with Mamathi Chaari in the Star Vijay TV channel for a few episodes.
This movie might become a good break for Vijayalakshmi.

I totally agree that the song sung by SPB is very good. On any day SPB can elevate the song with his melodious voice (even without the music, that is SPB) and make it a hit.
But YSR has come up with excellent music in this movie, wonder how the movie will look like. Waiting for this movie to hit the screens this 27th.

Producer S.P.B Charan and his debutant director Venkat Prabhu have come out with Chennai-600028 a thoroughly enjoyable film. In a way it gives some contention that Tamil films are coming of age, and are targeting the urban youth audience.
So, what makes it tick? The screenplay is minty cool and our heroes are ordinary middle class guys, not the larger-than-life super-heroes you encounter in Tamil commercial cinema. The basic storyline is woven around galli cricket match and a tournament, along with an assorted group of guys who are buddy-buddy and have various growing-up problems.
There is a local flood lit cricket tournament in Chennai Mandaveli area, where the big clash is between R.A Puram Sharks and Royapuram Rockers, with latter winning the tournament four times in a row. The Sharks and the Rockers team members are always daggers drawn, and the film is how the former defeats their arch rivals in the cricket field.
The Sharks are the underdogs, and naturally the focus is on them and their members. Karthik (RJ Shiva, of Radio Mirchi fame) is the captain of Sharks a dreamy guy who is in love with his friend and fast bowler Palani's sister Selvi (Vijayalakshmi, daughter of director Agathiyan), and his brother the local don funds the team.
Their main batsman Aravind (Aravind Akash) is a playful lamb working as a bearer in a Coffee shop who is after a rich and sexy chic (Christine Zedak). Then there is Reghu (Jai, another look alike of Vijay and youngest son of Deva) who was the star bowler of the Rockers but ends up with the Sharks. Finally the director has introduced his younger brother Premji in a comedy role as a fat guy who is a sloppy fielder!
All these guys along with a host of newcomers and a funny barber turned coach (Ilavarasan) makes this bratpack movie as interesting as a cliff hanger of a one-day match. It is good fun watching these likeable and recognizable bunches of guys in their quest for romance as they try to get the 'Mirchi' cup.
Yuvan Shankar Raja has dished out eight fast youthful numbers with Yaro…. being the pick of the lot. The sensuous Ennamo… sung in a husky and sexy voice by Anushaka against a guitar and flute background has been picturised in a teasing way with some great skin show by this new chic Christina. Sathi Saravanan's camera work has added to the mood and feel of the film.
On the downside the plot is too precarious a peg for a 16 reel film and should have been trimmed to make it a bit racier. In a way the songs come one after the other at regular intervals slowing down the tempo. The film will be enjoyed only by the city audience, and has large dosages of Chennai lingo.
All the guys who acted in the film are candid and have let their hair down. RJ Shiva is the surprise packet in the film. Venkat Prabhu deserves a pat on his back for making a breezy fun movie which highlights the fact that cricket in India which is a religion for many is also won through team spirit and sacrifice.
So go ahead, make your matinee and enjoy the match.
Verdict- Sixer!

Will it be a hit?

நன்றாக போகும் `சென்னை 28'; விநியோகஸ்தர்கள் வருத்தம்
30 ஏப்ரல் 2007
15:55 IST
Blog this story

hey guys watched chennai 28 last night< in black >.the movie was superb.anybody who has played tennis ball cricket in chennai could well relate chennai 28 to their life.there was one period even i was like this from morning to midnight i use to play cricket sometimes evn bunking my school.so every moment i related and enjoyed.
mirchi shiva has done a superb performance very casual and natural and equally well done is ajay <resembles vijay>and premji.everybody has a equal role and have done wonderfully.music by yuvan awsome.jalsa song had great applause also during the part "figure'a nambaama pozhachuko da"there was a huge roar in the theatre and "saroja saama nikaalao" evrybody started dancing instantaneously.venkat prabhu taking up a very rare theme and doing it with debutant artists sucessfully should defenitely be praised a million dollar.
i doubt the film goes well with ladies or families.not that it has obscene or vulgar scenes but still i feel only boys would love it .yuvan as usual got huge whistles and claps when his name was displayed during the titles. cricket, friends, love, fun, chucha fights, good music... chennai 28 has evertthing.a thorough entertainer.kudos to charan and venkat

wonderful movie, script is good.
1st half was just too good, Jokes between friends, the fun of cricket and betting matches. Other area boy coming to their area
2nd half, friends having problem and gully cricekt starting.
they could've involved more romance as venket prabhu went to see his girl and had a duet song but they never showed them asking each other out
songs are very cool aswell
good move 8/10

Watched this movie yesterday. It was just an ok movie for me
.....My husband liked it so much and i guess it's a complete package for guys with nice music, comedy, love and lots of cricket. what else do guys need? hats off to Venkat Prabhu for coming out with a film that feels the pulse of youngsters ( guys esp.) ..... no wonder this movie is getting excellent reviews. Every single, Indian man would have played cricket atleast once in their lifetime. so, there's something for everyone to relate and cherish.
For me, it remembered my brother and his frds b'cos, i have watched them playing cricket all the time...i played the role of letting my bro' know (signal) if my Father comes
.... also, he used to hide his cricket kit in my cupboard
and i give them out thru the window :P ........ ofcourse, i did all this for a fee
later, engappa idha kandupidichuttaru endradhu vera vishayam
but, my dad was so cute to understand his interest and put him in a net practice
romba pesareno???
Anyway, Chennai28 brought back some of my sweet memories of the past.
Songs were excellent

பின்கோடு படத்தை பின்னியெடுக்கும் சூரியக்குடும்பம்!
- 14.05.2007
By JBR

Finally watched it. A very good entertainer. Premji was a disappointment though. And the side actors could have done better. The dialogues were top class however (Rockers speak better Chennai Tamil than Sharks). And the BGM being serious for trivial sentiments was a nice touch.

Exactly: "Leg side-la podaadha da.."
The other one I liked was when Raghu's father meets the captain guy's father:
"Nee vena en payyan teamla vilayadu. Enna team peru da adhu?"
"Sharks"
"Socks'a?"
"Sora sir, sora.. "

There r ppl who watch a movie only if sun tv recommends the movie..
Perfect example is Minnalae.. It was a wholesome entertainer which was pulled down by Sun tv. Hence the film ran only in the cities. In Nellai, it ran for less than 20 days..

I watched SPB-KA programme(Coffee with anu) in vijay tv today.
I enjoyed lot and proud of their friend ship.
It is still continuing with their sons(Charan and venkat prabhu)
Infact in charan's first production 'Unnai charanadidhen', venkat prabhu acted as hero and charan acted as anti hero which is unbelievable.
I want to see 'Cheenai...'specifically for their friendship only.
but it is not released in singapore..
kudos to their friendship.

Wonderful acting (wasn't that too natural to say acting) by all...
Kudos to Director for the climax---don't remember seeing such a terrific...just too natural climax...Bold move...Director had all his confidence in that climax... He just says...Life goes on...
I loved the movie...

What a movie! Really took me back to old days!
where we lost to 'chinna pasanga' a lot!Our area floodlight cricket is one of the best and especially the commentary!!
Few lines I remember from our area commentary
" Ungal udambirku valuvalikkum manikchand, pan parag, gold flake cigaratte, water packet , rasnaa anaithum engae kedaikum"
" adhu oru agala pandhu"- wide ball
" ellai pandhu"- no ball

Chennai 600028
With cricket being the passion and obsession that it is, it is surprising that more movies haven't been made about it. Hindi cinema atleast has Lagaan in the genre of 'cricket movie' but as far as Tamil cinema goes, our only claim to fame so far is I Love You Daa, a film that was an insult both to the game and to cinema itself. Debutant director Venkat Prabhu rights the situation with Chennai 600028, a film about cricket. Fun, youthful and stylish, it is a film that will make fans of both cricket and Tamil cinema happy.
The R.A Puram Sharks team has never won the local cricket tournament and has been beaten in the finals the last 3 years by the Royapuram Rockers team. This year's tournament has just been announced and the Sharks are determined to win it. But the team runs into some issues as its captain Karthik(Siva) and key bowler Palani(Nitin Satya) end up fighting. Meanwhile, Raghu(Jai), a Rockers player, moves to R.A Puram and the Sharks view him with suspicion.
I never thought I'd say this about a director but Venkat Prabhu's wisest decision in making this movie is that he has aimed low. Having picked cricket as the theme, he hasn't tried to make his movie about the game at the international, national or even state level. The logistics for presenting the game convincingly at those levels would have been daunting, leading to amateurishness and silliness. Instead he has focused on local cricket, played in the streets and empty lots in Chennai. Apart from the smaller scale making things easier for him, it helps the movie create an immediate connection with the viewer since almost everybody has played street cricket at one point or another and so can identify with the protagonists.
Chennai 600028 is light-hearted and fun. When other directors are trying to overwhelm us by upping the ante in aspects like sentiments and violence, Venkat Prabhu takes the opposite route and keeps things light throughout. Characters express what they feel through offhand comments rather than in big showdowns. There are misunderstandings, fights and other complications but they aren't tackled as though they are life-or-death issues. And what's at stake in the big final match isn't the guys' lives, livelihoods or loves. Its just their egos and a cup. This light-heartedness without the film being an overt comedy, makes it really stand out.
While the light-heartedness helps almost every aspect of the film, one thing it doesn't help is the romance. Aravind's romance with Cristine is too cursory and appears to have been added as an afterthought. It is cliched and lacks both passion and charm. The other romance involving Vijayalakshmi doesn't fare much better but that can be overlooked more easily since it atleast paves the way for the main conflict in the film.
Inspite of the fun nature of the film, the all-important match at the end does manage to raise some tension and this is solely because of the characters. We may not identify or sympathise with them but its impossible not to like them. They could have been plucked out of any area in Chennai and this realism helps make us feel that it is our friends who are playing. Their conversations are witty but very natural and even the few double entendres sprinkled around don't feel vulgar (as a bonus, we also get a take-off on the most spoof-worthy piece of dialog in Chandramukhi).
The film's ending really reveals Venkat Prabhu's wish to be different. He gives us exactly what we expect but not in the way - nor at the time - we expect it and so manages to finish the film on a wonderfully ironic note. Kudos!
The film is very, very stylish visually. From the casual, conversational introduction of its characters to the final match, the film is glossy and slick and slo-mos, split screens and other camera tricks keep it lively and vibrant throughout. Yuvan's background music also plays a big part in this and after Pattiyal, this is another movie where his fast score goes hand in
hand with the visuals to make up many spirited sequences. A simple case in point is the scene Jai makes his first visit to Nitin's house. Not since Agni Natchathiram has two people simply staring at each other been picturized with such energy!
The cast is made up of both new faces and actors who seem familiar but who we can't really place. All the actors do a competent job though no one stands out in particular. Gangai Amaran's son takes on the role of the movie's comedian. The 2 actresses don't fare as well as the actors. Ilavarasu is his usual witty self. Yuvan Shankar Raja delivers a suitably youthful, fun soundtrack though the movie could have done without atleast 2 of songs. Un Paarvai... is the pick of the numbers with the picturization ensuring that the sequence doesn't feel slow. Yaaro... is also melodious but is one of the numbers affected by occurring too close to another song. Ulle Vaa... is used suitably at a couple of places. Jalsa... and Saroja Saamaan Nikaalo... are fun songs that make us smile.

Looks set for a long innings - Chennai 600028
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, June 09, 2007]
It's a straight six from actor-director Venkat Prabhu's willow. Chennai 600028, directed by Venkat Prabhu has completed a 50-day run and is set for a big innings at the box office. This youthful entertainer has won rave reviews and is attracting good crowds in theatres.
Cricket is considered the religion of Indians. They eat, sleep and drink cricket. Chennai 600028 is one such movie which revolves around the passion for this game. He has focused from the roots, capturing the essence of 'gully cricket' which in local parlance is the tennis ball equivalent.
Venkat Prabhu has rightly captured passion, fun, friendship and a good deal of emotion-drenched moments in the movie. With all newcomers, Prabhu has dished out an engrossing tale streets ahead of the mundane contemporary films. Fun, frolic and humor are in abundance, peppered with the commercial ingredients
In a nutshell, the movie was all about the clash of two local teams - Sunambu Kalwaa Sharks and Royapuram Rockers. The former team has a score to settle with after the shattering loss in a tourney two years ago. The intense training begins for the Sharks unfolding on the way the hard facet of reality.
Producers J K Saravana and S P B Charan deserve a pat for supporting such an innovative theme.

A sequel to Chennai 600028
IndiaGlitz [Monday, June 11, 2007]
S P B Charan not just possesses a golden voice but golden hands too. He along with J K Saravana produced Chennai 600028. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the movie had newcomers part of the cast.
The youthful entertainer dealt in detail about the Gully cricket and the fun and passion shared by a group of friends. The film went on to become a blockbuster and garnered huge revenue at the box office.
Thrilled at the success, Charan said, “I thank the film-goers for making the movie count. Their response for the film has been overwhelming. Thrilled at the success, we are contemplating to come out with a sequel for Chennai 600028”.
The cast and crew were keen on going round the State to meet and interact with film-buffs. But it had to be put off since everyone became busy after the movie's release.
