It seems the story revolved more around Vinay and Sada.. Though specs-clad, Sada looks cute.. About Vinay, he looks promising..
hope he has a good innings in filmdom

I saw couple of stills and she will help me in eradicating "Sadha" effect !
Is she that bad ?
Anyway, namma ASIN kooda ULLam Ketkumae La

It doesn't matter since it is a soft love story.
Jeeva's picturisation will be good. My point is : SHAAM would have been a perfect choice for this movie. But still commenting like this before the release is not good. But I felt like that !

I think Sadha is damn cute and good looking.
Her acting is not bad too... I like her a lot more than most of the top heroines in tamil.
The movie looks very good. The songs are amazing. Best HJ album since Minnale IMO.
Its nice that my fav songs are picturized on Sadha. Vaigasi Nilave looks awesome.
Sadha is the heroine. Tanisha is just a sidekick/friend I'm sure.
Anyways I wont miss this movie in theaters.

I agree with you except the highlighted one !
Here is my short review on the album !
It also has the "dejavu" feel one will get with HJ albums. But it is refreshing and the packaging is excellant. My pick would be "JUne PonaaL". But other songs are also good !

Somehow Selvakumar, initially I thought I loved Hello miss so much, then later my pick was the title song and June Pona. But now Vaigaasi Nilave is so addictive.. especially the part where it goes like a ghazal " idho .. enakkaga virindhadu idhazh.. " Nowadays, since I find it difficult to choose one among all the five, I listen to the whole album..

Storyline of Unnale Unnale
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
Oscar film's next production Unnale Unnale is a triangular love story featuring Sada along with new comers Vinay and Kajol's sister Tanisha. Vinay and Sada are a couple in love with each other but Sada being suspicious in nature, doubts Vinay frequently and unnecessarily resulting in constant squabble between them. Sada is unable to tolerate even a harmless interface between Vinay and any girl and imagines the worst whenever she spots him with any woman. At this juncture Vinay proceeds to Australia where he meets Tanisha who is completely different from Sada and encourages his strengths without pointing out his flaws. He finds himself slowly attracted towards her. What happens to Sada's love forms the climax of the film.
When talking about his film, director Jeeva says with pride, "I have told a beautiful love story bereft of violence, gory blood shed and gruesome killing. This film is not region specific and I have put forward issues faced by the youth all over the globe". According to him, Unnale Unnale will not fit into any usual formula of a film. "It is a fun filled film with enjoyable comedy and five lively tracks of Harris Jeyaraj", he adds.
While major part of the film was shot in Australia, for the remaining portion the crew has opted Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. Jeeva claims that forty lakhs was spent in erecting a set for a specific song which is filmed like that of a Hollywood film. The movie is a Tamil New Year release.

Perfect character for SAadha
she knows her limitations. It is possible that such a girl with too many not so good things and inferiority complex will suspect a man who loves her.
Let me hope tjat the guy abandons this poor girl and embraces TANISHA (

Well after seeing Sadha in kinda of an antagonist role in Priyasakhi, she seems perfect for this role. But I hope that it's not to the extent that she becomes annoying and like Sinthiya says, she loses the guy. Hopefully, it's just a lesson she learns. Seems like a very cool, college love story
can't wait. Songs are really nice. But the hero guy

We go to the movies to laugh, cry, and be entertained. That movies are forever and everything else can wait is reinforced by Jeeva’s Unnale Unnale . The high points are Sada’s possessive, stubborn woman act, Harris Jayaraj’s chic music including the haunting title track and background score and Jeeva’s winsome dialogues. Employing a Dil Chahta Hai-esque feel, this film is a visual accomplishment. The cameraman in Jeeva has created an array of breathtaking images of yuppie centric Melbourne.
Unnale Unnale is an urban, romantic, fun film that explores love from a slightly realistic and different point of view.
The movie does not have clichéd characters nor the typical masala associated with Tamil films and is packaged in Bollywood style. Though some of the scenes are straight lifts from various Hollywood and Bollywood films, director Jeeva has succeeded in bringing out brilliant performances from his lead actors and presenting the film in a chic and sophisticated manner.
Karthik (Vinay), a software engineer is a fun loving and a playful lad who flirts with every second girl who crosses his path. He is sent on work to Melbourne where he meets his ex-lover Jhansi (Sada). They previously fall in love with each other in Chennai but drift away when they find that they are not made for each other. Jhansi is an extremely possessive, always suspicious, introvert, who is basically old fashioned. There is this bubbly girl Deepika (Tanisha) whom Karthi meets on his flight to Australia who plays cupid after realizing how deeply they still love each other but Deepika slowly falls in love with him, complicating matters. The stubborn and at the same time lovelorn Jhansi is not willing to open up and sort out issues and her hidden fears makes things worse. Do the mismatched lovers unite?
There is no room for predictability in Jeeva’s script and he has shown love happening between the characters as a gradual process over a period of time. This modern love story explores relationships with class and maturity punctuated with light humour that really lifts the movie in the first half. The interaction between Karthi and Jhansi in India and Melbourne are a pure delight to watch. In the second half, things begin to cool down and the pace drops a bit, but still the packaging leaves an impact, thanks to the hummable tunes, brilliant camera work and freshness in cast.
Full marks to Harris Jeyaraj for the songs especially the “Unnale Unnale…”, “June Pona…” and the background score which stays long after you leave the hall. They are picturised aesthetically in never-seen-before locations with utmost care going into details. Jeeva who has handled the camera has done a great job. Each frame of the film is picture-perfect and looks like a dream.
Newboy Vinay is literally the tallest hero (6ft 3in),he is handsome with a winsome smile. He fits the character of Karthik, the smooth talking city boy and has the much required screen presence. But he has to brush up his dialogue delivery as he has the potential to be a star. However it is Sada who steals the show as the no-nonsense, level headed, self-centered working woman of today, who knows what she wants in life. Jeeva has given her a matured bespectacled look (a la Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Naa Ho?) with western outfits. She brings credibility, sensitivity and vulnerability to her character with the mien of a veteran.
Tanisha suits the role of Deepika to the T. She is sassy, gentle and looks glamorous and has been able to bring the zingy mix of her character alive with style and substance. You cannot mention just how luminous the two girls look on screen with perfect costumes that go with the story milieu. Full credit goes to Aneez, the costume designer. Raju Sundaram and Sreenath provide humour and wacky one-liners in the first and latter half respectively.
Anyone (which means almost everyone) who has loved and lost will recognize that Unnale Unnale is a bitter sweet valentine to unrequited love. It is a feel-good love story which will surely appeal to urban audiences and youth. Go for it, and chill out in cool Melbourne, a welcome relief from Kollywood’s current favourite location- Madurai and its dry arid lands.

Movie rocks
A well handled fantasy love triangle without any subplots or much deviation from the main thread.Cinematography and music are the highpoints.Jeevas lighting and choice of locations
First half focusses mainly on the broken relationship between Vinay and Sada narrated in a series of flashbacks.Second half alternates between the three characters with Tanisha who initially tries to unite the lead pair ends up loving Vinay.Keep guessing the climax
Dont expect a fairytale ending though.
Vinay is passable as the cherubic playboy.Sada for the fist time has a role of some substance and comes out with a fairly decent performance.Bubbly Tanisha is jus awesome and her expressions are the same what she did in Neal n Nikki.
On the blip side, movie loses pace in the second half,Sada repeatedly shooing Vinay gets irritating after a while and some more depth cudve been added into Tanishas character and her feelings for Vinay. And Jeeva cudve reduced the quantity of his dialogues and boy gal thatthuvams
Perfect for an evening out with friends and a bag of popcorn

IndiaGlitz [Friday, April 13, 2007]
Suddenly urban, uber-cool romantic flicks seem passé in Tamil movies. Almost every second movie made in Tamil has too much of what the industry call ‘nativity’. Madurai, the land of dust and blood, and those districts in the south of it, are the happening backdrops. Amidst this, it takes Unnale Unnale to reinforce your belief that Kollywood too can make soft-focus, feel-good yuppie romance kind of movie.
Unnale Unnale is one of the most cute and cuddly kind of city love stories. They say devil is in the detail. But delight too is. Cinematographer turned director Jeeva, who showed his class in movies like 12B and Ullam Ketkume, puts up a mature mind in handling a three-cornered love story. His strength seems to be getting the backdrop right and making it tells the story along with the events.
Unnale Unnale is packaged with care and oozes a trendy chic feel all through. Jeeva has worked on the backdrop assiduously and makes the story appealing and realistic. In his endeavor, music director Harris Jayaraj has chipped in heartily and adds a unique luster. The main cast of debutant Vinay, Tanisha and Sada are in splendid form and give value to their roles. Sada in particular is full of restrained gusto and delivers a knockout punch of sorts.
Jeeva seems to have done pointed research into the world of software yuppies and the things that happen in their unique domain. And since the tapestry is real and cute, the movie unspools without any stutter or struggle. Jeeva maintains this cool hip kind of feel all through (Melbourne with its unique old world feel in a modern setting gives the story an effective backbone), and this consistency is vital to the story’s progress. Jeeva also gets the mix of comedy, romance and emotion just about right. So what you have is a complete product that ranks among the top.
Karthik (Vinay) is your typical software pro. Full of zest and playful energy, he is attracted to the opposite sex with inevitability of iron particles moving towards a magnet. There is nothing malicious or lustful behind his flirt. But it is a spontaneous inner process in him. His love life in Chennai had a jolt-filled end as his lover Jhansi (Sada) had walked out on him.
Jhansi, in a sense, is the mirror opposite of Karthik. If he is outgoing, fun-filled extrovert, she is laconic, inward-looking simple girl. The opposites had attracted each other. But as it happens, she is also repelled out for obvious reasons. Karthik takes the split with typical insouciance while Jhansi goes to Australia for higher studies.
Fate puts Karthik also in Melbourne as he is sent there on an official assignment. The playful Karthik runs into a vivacious Deepika (Tanisha) in his flight. She has the same kind of zeal for life as Karthik has. She understands his mind and tries to help Karthik and Jhansi join hands again. But in a quirk of fate, Deepika too is attracted by the vibrancy of Karthik.
It is a Mills and Boonish situation, but with a touch of acceptability. Caught between his old flame, which can be very difficult to handle, and a new one, who is all about lark and fun, Karthik has to decide on which girl to walk the aisle with. The suspense till the end is maintained with felicitous adroitness. This helps you to sit glued to the seat.
Jeeva’s script works mainly because, he doesn’t push the story. Rather it tells itself organically. The naturalness and plausibility make the story worth following.
Vinay, tall, dark and handsome, suits the character of an impish yuppie to perfection. The queer playfulness that seem affixed to his face comes handy in light-hearted moments. He brings to his character a dew-kissed newness. Though slightly one-dimensional and gawky in dialogue delivery, Vinay, if he makes the right choices, has a good future in the industry.
The most inspirational part in the movie is Sada’s performances. Playing a complex, possessive girl, Sada has given the character the much-needed intensity and has tailored her looks to convey the inner seriousness. The flickering of emotions behind the glassed eyes is very effective and convincing. Tanisha, on the other hand, has the same cherubic happiness of her sister Kajol. She is also very energetic.
The three characters understand each other and feed off from others. So what you have a very realistic flow of emotions. Raju Sundaram’s character adds the necessary zaniness to the script.
Harris Jayaraj always reserves the best for Jeeva. Unnale Unnale confirms that. The re-recording is of the highest class and brings alive the emotion of the moment very beautifully. The songs carry with them a veneer of class all through. All the songs are brilliant and get an extra sheen in the way they have been stylishly picturised.
Jeeva, who has done the double role of directing and handling the camera, has not slipped on both the fronts. In fact, one compliments the other. To a movie on love, his work is filled with love and care. How apt!
Unnale Unnale, on the whole, is a cool romantic treat for a hot season.

What happened? I heard the movie was so good, "chic"..I was even going to see it in the theatres all of a sudden everyone is blasting the film. I agree with the whole choosing Vinay. He's tall and his cuteness factor can be argued...But Shaam definitely would have been an excellent choice.

Unnale Unnale
Vinay, Sada Jeeva deserves a bouquet for bringing out the essence of love in a charming way.
Vinay is an engineer who lives every moment in joy. Sada measures her words and actions carefully. But opposites attract and the two meet in the court of love.
Vinay is mischievous even towards women he does not know and this trait turns out to be his villain in love. When circumstances always reflect Vinay in an unfavorable light, Sada gets assailed by suspicions. As time plays hide and seek, another heroine Tanisha makes her entry. Sada starts to hate Vinay and Tanisha falls irrevocably in love with him. Which love wins sweet success is told by Jeeva in a fetching screenplay.
Vinay is another chocolate faced hero like Abbas and Madhavan. With his sprightly talk and mischievous demeanour, he impresses the viewer from the beginning.
After not having seen Sada for some time, she comes as a cool presence on screen.
Sada says she is not in love with Vinay any more, but when she sees him in the restaurant, she puts on lipstick and reveals her love from her hiding place in the most charming manner. Once Tanisha knows that Sada wants Vinay no more, she moves to find a place in Vinay's heart. One can see her past experience of working in films, put to good use. Well done, Tanisha.
Vinay, Thanisha Rajeev Sundaram shines as Vinay's friend, who gets him into trouble. He has a new girl every day but when his sister sees him with a girl, he escapes by saying she is Vinay's girlfriend. Rajeev's acting is going in the right direction.
"Girls are like chewing gum. Both are sweet in the beginning," is an example of dialogues from the pen of S Ramakrishnan that get imprinted on our minds.
The music of Harris Jayaraj is in keeping with the pace of the film and good to hear. 'Gin ponaal....' and 'Vaikasi nilave...' deserve special mention.
One must get a love like Vinay's. One must understand a love like Sada's and reform. Jeeva has depicted these angles beautifully through his direction.
Great direction and cinematography by Jeeva makes for double enjoyment in 'Unnale Unnale.'

Unaale Unaale...i enjoyed watching the movie - a different kinda, feel good movie...
...
Sadha's character is great
(there is nothing wrong with her decision and being the way she is
) and she has done a good job; Vinay :P..he just looks and dresses very very well...:P (reminds me of Shyaam...); Tanish is good as well...
Story was good - ending was unexpected, however i was fully satisfied with the ending
...nice portrayal of the love triangle story by Jeeva...Great cinematography, especially the shots in Melbourne...Picturization of most songs were well done (I especially liked Unaale unaale, Vaigasi nilave and Mudhal naal ondru songs!!)
a nice, fun love story to see, for a change...

review
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
When Oscar Ravichandran decided to produce a film entirely shot in Australia, budget turned out to be an issue. So he settled for what he could get: Sadha (cheaper than a real actor) and Vinay (cheaper than renting a chimp). And what we get is a formulaic, connect the dots love story, which offers very few surprises. When u watch a film for two hours and then find out that the story ends where it begins, you dont call it a plot exactly.
The film begins with Sadha dumping Vinay (Its the same with the ending too, but hey
). Then he comes to meet him again, only to slap him and say good bye (Huh... what was the previous scene?
). Quite predictably, it rains immediately as the lovers part in utter sorrow. Or so we beleive... what ensues is a fun song with the hero dancing (ahem...) with his two friends and some chicks. A Special mention about vinay's dancing talents. His dancing skills may put Rajni to shame. The most balletic thing he does is arch his eyebrows.
His friends (Raju sundaram and "new face") exists for the sole purpose of providing comic releif in the film. Some popular internet jokes cooked up as witty dialogues and a couple of scenes flicked from Hum tum and Dil chahta hai, provides few of the enjoyable moments in the film. Apart from these "moments of creativity
", the scriptwriter is pretty much lazy. Rest of the scenes and dialogues are manufactured from nothing, just to serve as fillers.
The story fast forwards(an unfitting word for the film) to 4 years later. 10 minutes into the film, we are deprived of the only interesting characters (hero's friends) as our man leaves for Australia on an important assignment(*cough* which we never get to know even after 2 hrs of film watching */cough*). Guess what, by this time Sadha has moved on to Australia. Incidentally she is a close friend (we dunno how close) Tanisha, who again incidentally is Vinay's co-passenger. So they meet again
This is where we are told how he fell in love with sadha through a series of flashbacks. Apparently he meets sadha through the time honord tradition of bumping into females in a marriage
. Few scenes later, they confirm their love in the presence of semi-automatic rain (remember the first scene... irony
). Then its all cat and dog fight. Vinay attracts too many females (
) and Sadha feels insecure (inferiority complex I guess
). So she blames him all the time. She decides to dump him and plots a perfect plan. She sets him up with a female and uses that as an excuse to dump him. And yes... she slapped him for falling into her trap
Oh, did I say that there is Tanisha in this film too. In the second half she falls in love with vinay and decides to help for him win back sadha (
Dont ask me about the logic.. I myself am pretty confused). And there is also this Tamil stranger that our hero meets in Australia, who quite naturally is from the same place as vinay (he is actually there to make up for the absence of Raju sundharam and "new face" .. he TRIES some comedies
). He becomes a friend of vinay coz he is also tamil and he also tries to help him win back sadha, dances with him in songs and does all weird things.
And in the end.... Surprise ..... Sadha discovers that she infact loves vinay and decides to leave him, Vinay marries Tanisha.
Guess you understand my anguish
THE END!!!
Inspite of the boring plot... the film does manage to interest you at times. Some scenes are funny. Vinay acts well enough at places and bad at some places. Rest of the cast is also inconsistent in their performance. Only sadha is consistent .. she acts consistently bad
Inspite of being the most experienced member of the cast, her acting leaves a lot to be desired. And about Tanisha's acting... Sorry I wasnt paying attention to that
. Cinematography is excellent
Even HJ does a gud job with songs and BGM. One of his better films I would say, but at some points he missed the all too important timing in his BGM.
Vinay doesn know to dance, he acts a little bit and he speaks broken Tamil. I guess thats enough for him to be the next heart throb
Overall a watchable film... not that bad :P

Unnale Unnale is too cool. First half rocks, while in the second half a bit of sentiment is there, still the film is god.
Sada as sandega prani is fantastic, though her looks sometimes are bad.
Tanisha, no words to describe. She is too cool and has done her job well.
Vinay should improve his dialogue delivery
Most of the songs are picturised well and bgm makes the movie lovable.

I saw the movie yesterday and my verdict is that it is, overall, a good film. Definately worth a watch.
Sada's subtle and natural acting is one of the highlights of the movie for me.
The new hero Vinay is ok. His dancing needs a little work though!
Talking about dancing, the guy who comes as Vinay's friend (not Rajusundram) in the movie is a superb dancer. Check out his moves in the song 'June Pona'.
Most of the songs are picturised and chroegraphed well. My favourites were 'June Pona', 'Unnale Unnale' and 'Vaigaisi Nilavae'. I've started listening to these songs a lot again after seeing the movie.
I forgot how great the tunes were as its been such a long time since the audio release. HJ's BGM for the movie is also great, it really heightens the emotion in certain parts of the movie.
OVERALL A GOOD ROMANTIC MOVIE, WITH AN UNEXPECTED BITTER SWEET ENDING.

just watched Unnale*2
seriously want to ask jeeva - did you have a script in hand while making this movie???
1. Characters are not defined at all..........now, that Karthik character is a flirt or a jolly guy or a serious lover or wat is he???
.........same with Sada - is she a possesive female or a anti-male or a disciplined person or wat is she?? Tanisha -
xerox copy of laila character from UK
2. Hindi padam feel kondu varathukkaaga, Dil chahtha hai scene copy adikkaradha???
that raju sundaram - telephone scene - blatant copy of aamir khan's histroinics in DCH........and there is a scene where the director copies saint gobain ad
3. Film is watchable just bcos of beautfiul locales in Australia..........
4. Screenplay is so boring, it dosent interest u at all........we dint need a racy but atleast a gripping one
5. romance scenes are not gripping at all..........that cheekyness is missing........
6.
- we have one more dumb hero in tamil now...........his acting is so amateurish..........ready,start,actionnnu sonna madhiri act pannuraaru
..........Sadha, after acting in so many movies still doesent do things naturally..........all scenes, situations seem so artificial
7. film moves/chugs in the second half towards a "Ullam Ketkumae" sorta climax.......
there is nuthing in the film which is appreciative except maybe for the cinematography............i'm more disappointed cos, i was expecting a feel-good, soft, romantic story in tamil after all those "long haired" villains and gang rape stories.........but this was like eating a burger without a ham/vegetable in it.......a total amateurish attempt from Jeeva.........
Unnale Unnale - NO BRAINER

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
When Oscar Ravichandran decided to produce a film entirely shot in Australia, budget turned out to be an issue. So he settled for what he could get:
Sadha (cheaper than a real actor) and Vinay (cheaper than renting a chimp).
Apparently he meets sadha through the time honord tradition of bumping into females in a marriage
.
Few scenes later, they confirm their love in the presence of semi-automatic rain (remember the first scene... irony ).
Only sadha is consistent .. she acts consistently bad Inspite of being the most experienced member of the cast, her acting leaves a lot to be desired.
And about Tanisha's acting... Sorry I wasnt paying attention to that .
LOL I went back in the thread to see what you thought of the film!
LOL Such a funny review! I actually laughed out loud!

Watched the movie. My verdict would be : "Watchable"
The factor "Watchable" is only coz of one guy who was the only SAVING GRACE of this Yet Another Normal Love Story that carries poor star cast and all those scenes you had seen in ALL LOVE STORIES.
The guy is none other than HJ. Yes .. I am not a big fan of HJ. But apart from his AWESOME work , THERE IS NOTHING REALLY IN THIS MOVIE.
Starcast is very poor. The hero reminds you Ajith, Madhavan, Shaam in many places. Tanisha does a O.K job and in some stills she look
@ people who criticise Sadha. People who 've watched her previous movies will understand that this one is atleast better than those movies
Sadha lacks expressive face and eyes which is very important for a heroine in a love story
Her acting was terrible at many places
I couldn't get HOW THE HELL these two people (Sadha - Vinay) fall in love. Comedy was below average and all the scenes lack freshness and sometimes you are irritated with the narration.
The dialogues on WOMEN by MEN is the only
factor in this movie and it makes you enjoy since every men & women have a small amount of chauvinism. The dialogues reveal that.
Watch this movie just for Harris
- His BGM is
esp the Keyboard piece of the songs that he plays in the background is really COOL ! something that makes u feel |||ar to the keyboard piece that comes in Mouna Raagam
- This is one movie in which u can never FAST-FARWARD the songs.
Though the choreography was poor, picturisation was awesome
Climax was slightly different and was good but not great.
Overall,
Unnalae Unnalae - >> Remove the songs and there is nothing in th emovie

June Pona picturisation could have been better. Choreography was better. What was Raju Sundaram doing ?
&
What was the need for his character ?
Atleast the other guy who comes the friend for Vinay in Aus looks good. Comedy scenes were
Unnalae Unnalae is the best
Lyrics are cool and the music is
Ilamai Ullaasam
The songs appear suddenly sometimes & the scens before them look funny

Neevalle Neevalle retraces Unnale Unnale </a>
May 9, 2007
Producer Vijaykumar and Ramana say, ‘Our recent release Neevalle Neevalle,(Unnale Unnale) directed by Jeeva and presented by Oscar Ravichandran is attracting the youth very much.' Addressing a success meet organized in Hyderabad recently, Vijaykumar says, 'Our film hit the screens two weeks ago.
The rate of collections is increasing day after day and the film is running on a success path now.
Debutant actor Vinay, Tanisha and Sada gave very good performances. The climax in the film is beyond the expectations of the audiences and was a big asset for the success of the movie.' Another producer Ramana says, ‘It is an out-and-out youth movie. There is a very good message for the youth. Harris Jayaraj's music, Vennelakanti's dialogues, Raju Sundaram's choreography remained special attractions for the film. As director Jeeva himself was the cinematographer, he captured the beautiful locales in Australia in a never before manner. We thank the audiences for making the film a big hit.'

CHINKS IN THE AMOUR
Almost nothing goes right in a love story about two people who are wrong for each other
May 7, 2007 - A RECENT ISSUE of Anandha Vikatan featured an interview with the actor Simbu, and when asked about his much-publicised love affair that ended just a little while ago, he had this to say: “En kaadhal ellaame nijam! Ippo vilagi nikkalaam. Aana ellor manasukkulleyum oru theatre irukku. Adhil dhideer dhideer-nu pazhaya padam odum… thavirkave mudiyaadhu.” This has got to be one of the great quotes about romance and the movies, for what he’s implying is that they’re inseparable. Even if we’re not physically inside a theatre or in front of a television set, we can never prevent flashbacks from occurring in our minds, inside our heads. (Of course, these replays needn’t always be about love – you could be remembering the face of the auto driver who drove you home and then arm-twisted you into coughing up an extra fifty, but who wants to hear a great quote about that?) The movies are made for romance. There’s something about seeing a love story unfold on the screen, as opposed to merely reading one – and that comes from the little things the actors do. The way the girl smiles, say, or the way the boy belts out a line of a dulcet duet, or the way the violins behind the scenes hit a high when boy and girl come together… And then I went and saw Unnale Unnale, and everything I’ve rhapsodised about this far went poof into the stale air of the cinema hall. At one point during this frustratingly ragged film, I actually thought I’d be very happy if I never saw a love story unfold on screen again.
Unnale Unnale details a love triangle that centres on Karthik (newcomer Vinay, who delivers his lines of dialogue as if chewing invisible food with his mouth open). He’s a compulsive flirt who falls in love with Jhansi (Sada), whose puritanical attitudes towards itches south of the navel would make the Victorians appear a bunch of naked hippies. A girl is entitled to her views, of course, but what’s galling is that we’re asked to buy this love angle as if it were actually possible. There’s not one scene – one scene – that tells us why these two would consider spending a minute in each other’s company, let alone a lifetime. Conventional wisdom is that opposites attract, but many people who’ve been in love will tell you that opposites, sometimes, merely repel – and badly too. Director Jeeva – what a comedown from the immensely likeable 12-B and Ullam Ketkume – builds his entire first half around the fact that Karthik and Jhansi met and loved and split up. He wants us to have visceral reactions about this arc of the story – but how can you even begin to care about plot points that were telegraphed to you the minute you laid eyes on these characters? So we move on to the second half, where Karthik and Jhansi meet again in Australia – only this time, there’s Jhansi’s colleague Deepika (Tanisha), who falls for Karthik even as she tries to patch things up between him and Jhansi. Again, none of this plays out in a manner that’s remotely probable or engaging.
The great tragedy about Unnale Unnale is that, had it worked, it would have been one for the ages – despite liberal helpings of entire scenes (and concepts) from Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho and that silly Jennifer Lopez rom-com where the heel of her shoe gets stuck in a manhole cover. I don’t recall many Tamil movies that were about falling in love with the same person all over again – the first time without a clue about him, the second time after fully knowing what makes him tick (and knowing that this time around, there’s competition). But the performances are quite bad and none of the actors makes it easy to care about how they end up. Vinay is personable enough (in the tradition of Jeeva’s other softie heroes like Shaam and Arya), but the only towering aspect about him is how tall he is. (This results in one of the big laugh-out-loud moments, when he stands in the way of a friend and the latter exclaims, “Dei… building maadhiri nikkaadhe!”) Sada walks through the entire film with a single expression, a wrinkled-up nose and perpetually pursed lips that make it appear that she’s just walked into a particularly nasty cloud of flatulence. And Tanisha is absolutely dreadful. The movements of her lips have nothing to do with the lines she’s supposed to be delivering, and my instant thought was that she has a great future ahead of her if she ever decides to take up playback singing for Tamil cinema.
Harris Jayaraj, as always, gives Jeeva a superb soundtrack, but the songs don’t really acquire a life of their own with the picturisations. Ilamai ullasam, for instance, is clumsily staged at the scene of a wedding, and Vaikasi nilave is one of those generic warrior-and-princess conceits that has been yielding diminishing returns since Thalapathy. But why moan about the music, which at least provides a happy diversion from the talkie portions! It’s been some time since I saw such a concentration of crackpot ideas (read cinematic contrivances) in a single place – like Jhansi hiring a hooker to test Karthik’s resolve, or Karthik’s friend (a listless Raju Sundaram) going on and on about the fun they had with girls at a party (naturally, Jhansi is within earshot), or Jhansi getting inspired by the science behind insemination attempts at a bull farm, or the fact that everyone is connected to everyone else (the girl that Karthik meets on a plane just happens to be his ex-girlfriend’s colleague-to-be, and so on), or the twisty climax that must have seemed good on paper but comes off as utterly flaky on screen.
And did I mention that everyone talks and talks, and when we think they’re done talking, they pick up where they left off and talk some more? They talk about the differences between men and women. They talk about the nature of love. And I’m sure there’s a whole bunch of other things they talk about, except that I stopped listening at some point. Jeeva knows that he’s dealing with a visual medium – how could he not, considering how wonderful his cinematography is – and yet he stuffs his film with endless variations of the same bit of dialogue, and after a while, you get the feeling you’re seeing the same scene over and over. There are some good funny bits, especially at the beginning, but the one sequence I took away was the one that introduces us to Karthik. Just a minute earlier, we’ve seen a boy and girl (boyfriend and girlfriend?) quarrelling. We don’t know who these two are – we see them from a distance, and their dialogues are drowned out by music – but it appears that the boy is pleading with the girl to forgive him for something he’s done, and she refuses. So the dejected boy turns away from the platform they’re on and walks onto the street blindly, right in front of an oncoming car. And as a crowd gathers around the grotesquely spread-eagled accident victim, we notice that one of the curious faces belongs to Karthik. He looks and he walks away, unaware that very soon he’s going to get hit by a truck himself (figuratively, of course). This sequence tells you everything the film is going to be about (the vagaries of love, and such), and it accomplishes all of this without a single spoken word.
