Best Actor in a Villain/ness role
Throughout the history of Tamil Films, big names have been associated with villainy. Today's top range villains are some of the best actors around! They have taken on character and other roles easily. Nassar of Emttan Magan comes to mind - the portrayal of a strict father was awesome! Pasupathy, a one time villain of Virumandi days, has played comedian in Mumbai Express and Maja and also played the leading role in one of 2006's best outings Veyyil.
Coming to the best of villainy of 2006, the guys ruled in the celluloid world, although the best villains (or in Tamil, villi) in TV serials have always women. The year saw the entry of new villains, who are expected to rule the screens in 2007.
Azhagam Perumal of Puthupettai and Daniel Balaji in Vettayaadu Vilayaadu were the conventional villains. Old timer Prakas Raj continued with his spiteful ways. Jeevan in & as Thiruttu Payale played the lead role while Reema Sen scored points as the girlfriend from hell in Vallavan.
And Hubbers choice for best actor/actress in a negative role

Well deserved award for Daniel Balaji!
Some of the *deadliest* villians I've seen in the past are:
1. Nasser - Thevar Magan & Kuruthipunal
2. Raghuvaran - Baasha
3. Prakash Raj - Asai & Gilly
4. Pasupathy - Virumandi
But all the above guys had a "meaty role" & had equal footage along with the hero through out the movie....
But this guy Daniel Balaji just came in the middle of the movie (just b4 interval). As one "Amudha" his was a spell bounding performance for sure. His character had evil written all over it and was plain ruthless to say the least... Especially he was quite deadly in the one-on-one confromtation with Kamal. A well deserved award for a villain whose role was quite different and deadly in recent times.

Best Comedian
Comedy in Tamil films can be a laugh riot. Many among us can remember our favourite dialogues and scenes from the films. (Prabhu Ram comes to mind immediately)
This is not a new phenomenon as comedy scenes from the past such as Kalyana Parisu, Thiruvilayadal are legendary and were even available in separate tracks in the days of the EP and LP.
2006 saw the grand entry of Vadivellu as a lead actor in Imsai Arasan 23m Pulikesi. And what a grand reception he received, with the movie becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Vivek is also entering the foray of leading role, which is expected to see light in 2007.
2006 also saw the entry of funny-face Santhanam. His acting in Something Something, Vallavan, etc has earned him some new fans
The big question: who had us in stitches the most in 2006?
Vaigai puyal? Chinna kalaivaanar? Or Santhanam?

Best Actress 2006!
Dream girls! Kanavu kannigal!
Tamil film heroines have come a long way since the days of Padmini and KR Vijaya. Today, nothing is important – talents, good voice, acting capabilities, etc. What is required are physical attributes. And how much flesh can be shown. Actresses have been reduced to ornaments and rarely needed for the story. But even in this scenario, some have excelled, given the minuscule role.
Last year's winner Sneha acted inonly one film, Pudhupettai but what a marvelous potrayal was it! Asin, who acted with Surya, Vijay and Vikram in 2005 had only Varalaru to show in 2006.
Mrs Surya on the other hand appeared in mature roles in both Vettaiyadu Vilaiyaadu and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal.
Nayanthara who rose to great heights was in many Deepavali releases like Vallavan, E, etc.
Cutie-pie Bhavana was another favourite of Tamil audience everywhere.
And the award for the best actress 2006 goes to….

Jyothika seems to have stolen a lot of hearts, not just Surya. She got over 34% votes in this tough contest..! Bhavana came second with 19% votes. Impressive performance in her maiden year, isn't it? Last year winner Asin was a close third with 18% votes. Oh, pity! Sneha was far behind with 10% votes. Was that a "Vendaam.. puthupettai maathiri roles" message for her?

Best Director 2006
In Tamil cinema, there were few eras when directors dominated over actors ,otherwise it has been actors paradise mostly .The year 2006 is a balancing year .Many young directors took commadable initiative to bring Tamil cinema to healthy trend ,made people to accept movies without much actor's dominance.
As usual ,'minimum gurantty' KS Ravikumar made Ajith fans happy and Gowtham menon made distributors happy with strong star value.
Selvaragavan failed to impress general audience ,but critics didn't let him fall .Jananathan ,who achived National award with his previous movie ,but lost in BO ,this time spotted it perfectly that too with a unusual plot.
Director Shankar made two young talents smile .Simbhu Devan ,cartonist from Vikatan ,made a historical attempt to make a movie with historical Background, that too a comedy with Vadivelu as leading role.It really clicked and Tamil cinema expecting more from Simbhu Devan..End of the year ,Vasantha Balan strikes with another bold attempt 'Veyil' ,the success of the movie speaks volume how people are ready to accept movies with content.
Mishkin ,with a simple movie without any strong star caste ,VaLa meenu song and nice narration hit TN.
Krishna who promised to give us a cool love story with hottest pair ,failed to meet expectation though it is refreshing..Thirumurugan stunned people who expected a serial-kind of movie ,given a racy family entertainer with good message .Vishnuvardhan was promising with 'Pattiyal' ,another good sign for tamil industry.

All the directors mentioned by Joe is his post were nominated for this award. The washouts were Krishna and Mishkin. Thirumurugan, Vishnuvardhan, Simbhu Devan and Jananathan were left with single digit percentages. Vasantha Balan got a decent 10% of the votes.
And so, the battle royale was among.... Gowtham Menon, KS Ravikumar and yes, Selvaragavan!

Best Actor 2006
Tamil Cinema is mostly actor dominated industry .It had a history of maximum 2 or 3 actors dominate the industry with their huge fan following .But recent times ,there are more young talents making their succesful stories by taking bold attempts .Let us see who has won the hearts of hubbers in the year 2006.
Jayam Ravi ,with his early hits in previous years and few flops ,come back with a reasonable hit Unakkum Enakkum .Established Star Surya couldn't satisfy the huge expectation of audience in 'Sillunu oru Kaathal'
Dhanush's Puthupettai was 'Kuruvi thalaiyil Panamkai' ,much critically acclaimed movie didn't bring victory as expected. Mathavan's Thampi was a turning point in his carrier after Run ,once again given solid performance as a action hero.
Bharath became a watchful hero ,who is willing to do challenging roles .He was promising with his good performance in Pattiyal.Emttan Magan and Veyil .Hope he will continue to do the same. Jeeva is another notable young talent who was successful in both Dishyum and E .The story selection of these two young actors should be noted by established stars.
Veteran Kamal Hassan gave a fine performance in 'Vettaiyadu Vilayadu' as a Police officer after long gap .He has given his best in this director's movie, but critics claimed that great actor is not given substantial stuff in this movie ..Yaanai Pasikku Choola Pori!
Emerging Star Vishal continuing his success story with action packed 'Thimiru' ,which shows he knows what he can do and get going.Actor from stage background ,Pasupathi gave a wonderful performance in 'Veyil' ,treat to watch.
Ultimate star Ajith came out with one of the best shows in his career in 'Varalaru' .His performance as a dancer and father created a trmendous response among not only his fans ,but general public also...Star Returns!

One of the hottest polls of 2007, and the thread that generated the most responses in HA07...!
There were really four that looked to be fighting for the award:
Ajith
Jeeva
Kamal
Pasupathy
but it finally came to a contest between (ulaga) Nayagan & Godfather.
Who will the winner be..?!

Best actor award for Ajith for 2006 is definitely worthy. No one can fault Ajith for his role as the effeminate man in Varalaru.
Other than him, only Jeeva, Pasupathy and Bharath deserves to win. So, yes, Hubbers made the right choice this year!

Best Film of the Year 2006
Compared to previous years, 2006 was a successful year for the Tamil film industry. The success rate of movies has increased considerably. This evoked directors to try different kind of movies with different plots.
'E' is one movie with an entirely new plot - 'biological criminal activities targetting poor nations'. With an interesting screen play, Director Jananathan made the film enjoyable while the performances of Jeeva and Pasupathi ensured the success of the movie.
Emtan magan came from a director of a famous TV serial, (Metti oli), Thirumurugan. There is no second thought on his ability as he managed to hit the silver screen as well. Though the movie had shades of Thavamai thavamirunthu (Father-son relationship), the screen play and comedy made the film a good family entertainer with a good message. As usual Nasser did his role to perfection.
Imsai Arasan 23-m Pulikesi surpassed all expectatations and hype created. Young director Simbhu Devan and producer Shankar proved that people will accept even an outdated historical background if the presentation is new and innovative. Out and out a total comedy movie, Vadivelu fit into the character and made the movie succesful and entertaining.
Pattiyal a movie from the director of 'Arinthum Ariyamalum', extracted the best out of Arya. Young promising actor Baharth gave a remarkable performance in a different role.
Selvaragavan's 'Puthu Pettai' , despite it's successful audio album, couldn't make it big in box office .Though the screen play and plot were impressive, Danush couldn't fit into this mature character. Sneha's performance is worth mentioning. As usual, selvaragavan gained critics' appreciation.
Something Something Unakkum Enakkum, remade from Telugu turned out to be an another family entertainer with good comedy and youthful romance. It was received well by family audience.
Thiruttu payale with a negative plot, was a surprise hit although without strong starcast .The well narrated screen play and unusual approach of negative heroism and good songs made this low budget movie as one of the Box office Hits of 2006.
Varalaru was a come back for Ajith. KSR brought the best out of Ajith and after Vaalee, Ajith gave a commendable performance both as father and 2 sons. Ajith's performance as a dancer was well received and appreciated. Without doubt 'Varalaru' is a milestone in Ajith's career.
Vettaiyadu Vilayadu. Despite being in production for a long time and facing various hurdles, Vettaiyadu Vilayadu became a super hit in Box Office. Super Actor Kamalhassan as a senior police officer gave a cool performance. Though Gowtham Menon couldn't avoid shades of his previous movies, the super hit songs and Kamalhassan's presence made the movie successful.
Veyil was a remarkable attempt by another young director Vasantha Balan. It tells the story of an unsuccessful man from 'fire city'. Some scenes with village background were easily some of the best in Tamil cinema. Pasupathi gave a stunning performance. Bharath also contributed to the success of the movie. Uncompromised story line, good performances, songs and good taste of the audience made this movie successful, which is indeed a good sign for tamil cinema.

well, i have observed in a few other sites that,
generally fans of a particular actor tend to vote only for their favorite actor's film & try hard to make their idol's film get top ranking. hence my post here. neeways I am glad to know that my post here is being/has been proved wrong & the voting pattern at Hub is different ! (btw this is the first Hub awards I am witnessing & participating.)

Results
The nominations were interesting in that they spanned movies from full length comedies (Imsai arasan), commercial ones (Godfather), thrillers (VV) to senti's (Em magan). So how did the results pan out? Pattiyal, Thiruttu payale and Imsai arasan came at bottom 3 with 3% or less votes. E and Em magan also could manage only single digits (< 5%). Puthupettai was only slightly better with 6%.
That left three movies in the battle:
Varalaaru
Vettiyaadu Vilayaadu
Veyil

Varalaru got only 16% & 3rd place

Realistic potrayal of underworld. Very good screenplay and direction but I heard this movie is a inspiration of Bangkok dangerous.
Technically Pattiyal was good and the performance of Bharath was very good as deaf and dumb

RB: Inga pala pEr kAkka kAkka slick movie. GM one of the BEST directors ever-nnu sollittu iruppAnga. I would advise them to watch pattiyal. Strong script, mindblowing screenplay, excellent performances made this movie definitely worth a watch. IMHO, its the best movie last year with a terrific climax
Shows the vulnerability of underworld and the innocent people who are being exploited

Yes. Indeed it is. IMHO, thats 2006's best movie. I was not impressed with VV's aRinthum aRiyaamalaum. That movie was very overrated, I thought and thats why I decided to skip pattiyal. But did not have any better movies to watch and decided to sit through it.
Pattiyal was raw, gore, real sans any sentiments.
PP was not very real, I felt. And in the 2nd half the screenplay was very poor and SR did not really know how to end the movie.
Pattiyal was terrific

Though I liked both Pattiyal and Pudhupettai . I would prefer Pudhupettai over Pattiyal . First half of pudhupettai was simply superb and 2half dragged a bit and Danush was superb

PP there were a few scenes which were hard to believe. The other guys will be just shocked and won't do anything when Dhanush kills the rival gang leader's brother and also the escape sequence

Both the movie broke the heroism! I also prefer Pudhupettai over Pattiyal for sure!
Eventhough climax is shocking in Pattiyal, there are some boring scenes which actually stopped the actual flow of the movie, eg Pooja Bharath love and the story movement is very predicatable..Padmapriya.. rape.. etc!
Where as Pudhupettai said the actual life of a don, his birth, growth, raise, fall etc.Second half is not at all dragging for me all scenes in the movie are well justified!
-

The rape sequences were pretty bad, I agree. But the ending was not at all predictable, unlike PP
Did you say story movement was very predicable in pattiayal
Yeh RB, that scene spoiled the movie for me. I could not enjoy PP after that scene. In fact that scene is probably the most imp scene in the movie but horribly shot, IMHO

Well Nerd just before climax my prediction about the movie Pattiyal was absolutely correct which is not at all a quality of a movie to be called as 'best'!
Seriously Pudhupettai (except that escape scene) lot of unexpected shocks
1. The way he murders his father (Waited for 20 years!!)
2. Initially eventhough Sneha is a prostitute he wont touch that lady, but after becoming dadha slight 'aanavam' 'adavadi' which actually forced him to have intercourse with a prostitute and marrying his friends sister in a most shocking way!
Idhellam Tamizh cinema-ku varaverkka vendiya pudhusu...Many more to list!!

But in the end he still lives.. common he should have been dead in that(where he actually gets caught, ALONE) scene itself.
Pattiyal is not a gangster movie. It just shows how innocent people are exploited in this ugly business. If pattiyal were PP, arya would have murdered the villain in the last scene. But what happened
and did you guess the very last scene ??????? In fact that scene was the most important scene in the whole movie. Hits you hard
I still hold that its a better movie than PP.

I predicted the winners and listed them out based on my *guess* on who will win. I think it is based on who predicted them the earliest
Confused indeed !
btw, I thought that the winner will be announced based on their vote in each category and the final results

Hey !! All 6 who have won were in my nomination list
Jyothika and Vadivelu were single nominations in their relevant category and for the other four I had two each (if i remember correct)
I am glad that I could predict it correct.

The hub awards are fine, but just 1 miss, the best actor should have gone to bharath for doing varied roles in veyyil, emdan magan & pattiyal.
Ajith was good in varalaru but it must be remembered that the director had tautly handled the film, thus sharing the honours.

Direction was blamed a lot, not performance of AJITH. Bharath did not deserve anything for Veyyil and em magan. They looked ike mega serials. Pattiyal of course was a good role!

True but even in Pattiyal there was nothing extra ordinary in his performance.

what do U mean "direction" was blamed a lot? It was ravikumar's brilliant screenplay coupled with direction that did the trick.
Also, it must be remembered that there was a long delay in the production. This makes the director's task even more ardorous.

Indeed direction was blamed in reviews that he could have done better... it is equally tedious for an actor to keep in touch with the kind of roles he had to play... it wasnt single character but 3 in 1 movie.
For 2006 i strongly opine AJITH deserves it

According to me...its a gud partnership between Ajith & K.S.Ravikumar. Both scores gud in Varalaru. Ajith's dance is also gud in this movie..even though its in long time production...it came out with success.

It is tedious for an actor, but more so for the director. In varalaru, one could see diff "sizes" of ajith. He had the "nan kadvul" hairtsyle for a song, in a few scenes, he lloked trim, in a few, bloated.
The "continuity" (in size) was not maintained.
