KOKKI REVIEW!!
By Moviebuzz Prabhu Solomon’s Kokki, the comeback vehicle of actor Karan starts promisingly. The opening sequences featuring some rapid fire editing (S.Santosh-J.N.Harsha), superb camerawork (Jeevan) and soothing music (Dhina) builds up your hope for this spin-off of Patrick Dempsey movie Run (1991) about a good guy on the run from the mob and cops for no fault of his. But it all comes crashing down in the second half as Kokki loses its fizz and becomes another hit and run drama. The tempo slackens and there are far too many songs which fail to accelerate the sluggish narrative. Still, Kokki is worth a watch as it is a brave film and Solomon should be applauded for making a realistic film. AXN Action Awards Kokki samy (Karan) is a sad looking barber from a village who comes to Chennai and is natured by Subburaj (Malaysia Vasudevan). He is quiet and does not speak much and manages to get a job abroad. But on the eve of his departure, he crosses the path with Uppuli (Kota Sreenivasa Rao) the dreaded don who controls the city. The highly superstitious Uppuli and his Jolsiyar (Manicka Vinayagam) think that seeing Kokki everyday in the morning brings them luck! They want Kokki to stay with them as a “good omen” but he does not want to do anything with them. . Soon Kokki is on the run with Uppuli and his gang along with cops is on his trail. A girl in a ladies hostel Raji (Sanjana) comes to his rescue and the rest of the film is how Kokki the one-man army fights and triumphs against the bad guys and the system. Solomon has been able to give an action mood to the film which has a racy first half while the second half starts plodding and has a very predictable climax. Karan comes out with a finely honed performance and kept his body language and dialogues to the minimal to give the character a melancholy look. Sanjana the new girl makes Raji look resilient and at the same time jovial. Kota hams as usual and the guy who comes as cop is menacing. With all its pros and cons, Kokki is a welcome relief from the usual masala rowdy movies. And the best part is that it is only two hours and quite racy. Verdict: Above Average |
