I think manirathnam is the best!

Balachandrar - Lost it, it was visible in PP.

Bharathiraja - Also lost it, was visible in a bunch of movies, like Kangalal Keithu Sie, etc.

Mani Rathnam is the best - Clearly visible in Ayuthe Ezhuthu!! 8)

my list

1) manirathnam, Shankar and Bala - both r the best in tamil cinema.
2) Gautham, Slveragavan,S.J.Surya, Dharani and K.S. Ravi kumar - they r also very good
3) Hari, Cheran, Saran - they r ok.

but my personal best is Gautham i love the movies he made. KK an Minnale. cant wait to see the new Kamal movie. wat happend to the Surya movie (Chennail Oru Madi Kaalam).

aint it strange that some directors can get the best out of some music directors

u sound as if kamal is the only reason Nayagan was a good movie. y didnt Kamal direct the movie himself if he is soooooooo good. Kamal knew that only Manirathnam can do such a movie. looks like u r the one overreting Kamal.

Thats strange to say that Shankar is sooo gr8 as a director. Kamal is much better than him in direction. Well think about the movies they directed

In the current crop, kamal is easily the best director by a long shot. I am not comparing him with balachander or sridhar here (they are in my 'retired' directors list).

Hey ram is a classic example (but for the overdose of kissing & narcissism). It should have been sent to the oscars instead of lagaan.

Vasanth i m a fan of Kamal...But i cant accept the fact that Virumandi is a classic, I bet u this movie would be a crap if there is no murders (with long size aruvaal)... If u watch closely this movie has commercial tone but the screenplay covered everything...I would Anbey Shivam is a classic not Virumandi

Lets leave the discussion on Virumaandi being a classic or not...
But its real absurdity to say the movie would have been a crap if there was no murders!!!!C'mon becky, i can't still digest what u said!! The movie definitely had somthing new 4its audience...The narration style from 2 points of view was top notch

That idea must have been handled very delicately and would have needed gr8 care in executing it, and no doubts Kamal did it 2 perfection in his screenplay.... I remember reading somwhere that "Antha Naal" a Sivaji starrer had this same style of narration............

Anyway even Anbe Sivam was proxy directed by Kamal and i believe the screenplay was by Kamal, correct me if I'm wrong...
Anyway need not take the credit away from Sundar.C, formally the film was directed by him......

Before watching Anbe Sivam i didnt' have any idea abt the film, just new the director,other cast n..........
But after watching Anbe Sivam, it was not hard to realise that Sundar.C was never the real director, merely the official director......

one small correction. Anbe sivam is NOT the only film proxy directed by kamal. every film of his is. In fact, during the editing of AS, sunder.c was busy with the shooting of winner. Kamal directs under 3 names directly - kamal haasan, singeetham srinivasa rao & santhana bharathi. The rest are proxy directed.

Instead of giving people what they want, I want to give them what I like & make them like it.

nope. they are not a 100% commercial film, they had some commercial elements like jalikattu, aruvaal[virumaandi] and [superb stunt scenec, kissing in both films], dolby[kp]

Virumaandi was definitely another experiment by Kamal. That idea/style of narration wouldn't have been received well by the rural/class C audience, but since it had that native stuff, it went ok with those Audience and bcame a hit in those centres too...Otherwise it would have been a hit only in A and B centres just like Kamal's all films....
Kamal surely would have had doubts on Virumaandi's capability of churning out as a Hit everywhere(especially in C centres).......

And that complain on Kamal doesn't make any sense Beck(Kamal doen't take risk in his own production)

Even i feel if Anbe sivam had done by RaajKamal it would have been a better hit....Anbe Sivam hardly got any publicity at that time except being a KamalHaasan film...thats one of the reasons it failed in BO

To say that since he was not the producer & hence is not responsible is not right. When he interferes in every other aspect, he could have done so here too. After all, it is His film.

Also, the TV ads were released long before the film's release. The producers were also not naive enough not to publicise it.

It is just kamal's excuse for its flopping. That's all.

My 2 cents
The reason might partly be B/C centers cannot understand an intelligent/sophisticated plot.
The other more important reason is the general attitude of the people in a region.

My point is simple.
Do you think every literate guy in your age group likes a movie like Anbe sivam?
No, they dont. They will rather watch a video collection of kutthu pattu
You ask them why, they say the movie is too serious..so i can't take it.
A few others are biased ( i think it might be heavy..so i am not watching)

TN currently likes only time pass movies.
The majority cannot appreciate sensible movies void of the usual fare.
Hero worship rules...more weightage given to the hero than the movie.
Kanna kanden fails while other commercial movies succeed.

Compared to this Bollywood has gone thru a big transformation.
So many off-beat movies are being made.
The bottom line is percentage of good/watchable movies(which are both sensible and commercial)
is way higher in Bollywood than Tamil.

Sanjay, until about 2-3 years back I thought same as you did
regarding Bollywood movies, 99% super filtered junk.

But in recent times, things have changed. I agree with Nayagan.
During last 2 years, I feel Bollywood has grown by leaps in terms
of experimentation/quality of the movie. Many huge stars dont
stick to image any more unlike earlier and many of them are
doing negative roles too- Ex Akshay Kumar, Ajay devgan, Sunil
Shetty etc who used to do same type of roles earlier have now
changed a lot. I just used to hate the sight of all these actors
earlier but now I am surprised the way they have changed.

If Bollywood progresses at this rate, I think within a couple of
years they will overtake Kollywood in terms of quality/scripts etc

But all of them showed his inability to depict a real world scence in a realistic way. selva is doing this one. you can't stand the "torture" the guy afflicts on the heroine and kick up a moral debate, but you'd rather choose to ignore that you are living in a society with religious clerics who can ask a rape victim to marry the rapist. what more, puthiya paathai, which almost blatantly advocated this, won a national award and is still considered by many as a great film. why? 'coz parthipan was smart enough to stay off any any skin-show and clubbed the whole "message" with some preachy blah, much to the delight of the purists.

on her falling in love with someone who stalks her like a mad man, well, look around. there have been real cases much weirder than this. personally, i don't look for the "message" in films. selvaraghavan's is a very personal cinema and quite aptly, it connects with people who have come across situations and people like he has. if you choose to close your eyes and say such things never happen in your wonderful world, well, that's your call. tastes, and experiences, differ.

about me being a female not finding anything wrong with the 7/g romance, i strongly feel that such on-screen relationships between people in flesh and blood are any day better than the following.

* rich girl sees coolie fighting baddies; jumps on the bed with her pillow and a song (a lot of movies; mostly rajni, vijayakant and sarath kumar's)
* pure-as-driven-snow women eats husbands' food left-overs (chinnathambi, super duper hit)
* rich girl sees hero working out, bites lips and starts gyrating (sarath, arjun and the like)

there are more success formulae which the "cultured" tamil film industry has patented over the years. the idea is simple: depiction of physical affinity should not be real but fantastical. kaviyarasus can get away with blatantly suggestive lyrics but when newcomers try calling a spade a spade, they become outcasts. i don't think selvaraghavan will get his due in the next ten years. but i have a feeling that coming generations would look at him with great interest. if he's still in the industry, that is.

Even accepting the fact that the "torture" shown happens in real life, it is an exception rather than a rule. U cannot depict minority incidents & get way with it saying that it is happening. Cinema being a powerful media, the director should show some responsibility.

Also, about the father son relationship. Which father would keep criticising his son day in & day out & then suddenly praise him when he lands up in a good job. It is all very well to say that praise should not be showered publicy & all that but reality is different. By the same yardstick if a dad insults his son in front of others it may also have serious pychological repercussions. It is the duty of parents to mould & encourage their children.

No society is free from wrongs. Glorifying them & justifying them by saying that it happens is no excuse.

glorified?? what did he glorify? there's absolutely no suggestion in the movie that the hero's mode of wooing the heroine is right. the first half relentlessly shows how she hates his ways. the screenplay just follows the girl's gradual understanding of the guy and his problems. i've myself seen absolute vagabonds turn a new leaf in life just because they had their women to go back to. selvaraghavan, as far as i can see, doesn't take sides or try to be preachy. which is quite something.

this is beside the point but, do you think ramgopal varma glorifies the underworld? i loved his mafia trilogy - satya, company and sarkar - but it doesn't in anyway mean that i'm for, or that matter against the underworld men. for me, there's just good or bad cinema. and good cinema doesn't necessarily have to leave me purged or cleansed of my vices. it just needs to connect.

I think he is very much over-rated but NOT because of his so-called explicit scenes or corrupting the minds or crap like that.
IMO, if he's being bold he's doing a good thing. We have always been hypocrites, relishing the "Mulla pakkaren" comedy in Gentleman but rejecting "Boys" totally. Kissing is vulgar but gyrations and double entendres are very much part of "Thamizh Panbadu".

I base my lack of appreciation for him mainly based on his film Kadhal Kondein. The screenplay was promising but it had so many loop-holes and impossible turns. One scene is enough - Sonia kisses Dhanush and asks him "Unakku ippo edhavadhu feelings vandhucha? Varla illa? Adhu dhaan friendship". And even her boyfriend's characterization is so pathetic it beats me how she felll in love with him in the first place.
Haven't watched 7G but seeing the hopeless non-actor in the promos and Sonia's just-got-up-i'm-angry expression put me off. All the scenes i watched were very artificial that i thought it best to avoid it.

However, like i said, we need directors who can call a spade a spade unmindful of all the Victorian Prudes around. Give love and lust their due place, otherwise we are no different from the Taliban or the Victorians.

Thalapathy is probably the last movie in which rajini showcased his good acting skills and that movie had IR and IR was at his best in that.. amazing songs and mindblowing BGM.. That movie, IMO is one of the best movies of MR and ppl like Rajaram call it as a crap juz coz kumudam dint give a good review

Thalapathi was hit but it was not a great directorial venture or anything like that.. It had all the commercial elements.. Rajini and mamooty with IR music and great songs coupled with Fights, dance and the masala stuff... You dont expect a movie like Thalapathi or Agni Nakshatram (another pure commercial movie) from ManiRathnam..

Duet was not a good movie at all.. The movie was a decent hit purely because of the music... Pudhu pudhu arthangal was a good movie. I think KB's run ended with Vaaname Ellai....

Yes Thiru, KB became a damp squib after vaaname ellai.. I think vaaname ellai is not a commercial success, though it was a very good movie..

but IMO thalapathy was a good directorial venture by MR.. No way its in the ranks of nayakan, roja, Km, anjali etc..,

but see even nayakan had good songs, dance and all.. Thalapathy had some really good acting, superb dialogues (mani himself), gripping screenplay and mindblowing music.. Mani's direction was flawless, i thought..

Interesting to note that you also thought Thalabadhi had parallels with Karna, i felt the same way too.....
Though i don't think it was Mani sir's best, It had apt performances from rajni and Mamooty and some GOD-level songs and RR from Ilayaan.

I think defenitely it is correct way to support my thought with help of magazines. because both magazines are part Tamilans life(75,60 years old)and so far they have given good reviews(only few times may differ with public taste).In fact every directors wants to see review of their films in AV and Kumudam.

1) I don't give a whit about a magazine which rates Sachein better than Mx or even CM for that matter - just to give one example. Most of their reviews are just about telling the story as it is. Another example: Virumaandi's review in AV - "Padathin mudhal pathu nimidangal thaan konjam medhuvaga selgiradhu, oru documentary-ai pola..." or something like that. Of course the first 10 mins is about Rohini and her assistant watching the documentary!!!How else will it be other than a documentary?? And the expert, well-learned reviewers don't have 10 minutes of their precious time to waste on a "pointless" and "slow" documentary? And thats the mag which said Virumaandi was the first to use live sound when it was done in Hey Ram itself.

2) Yes, i like Johny, and especially Rajini in that.

3) About R.C Shakti, i don't know his works well enough so i don't have an opinion. and i've already mentioned Fazil.

wasnt johny a good movie?? Isnt mahendran a good director?? Mullum malarum and uthiripookal were classics and johny was also pretty good.. btw, how many movies has he directed?? You know what rajini's all time fav movie is mullum malarum!! btw, kathal was an excellent movie and that guy BS has loads of talent, even his first directorial venture samurai had a nice screenplay and I guess am the only person who thought so!!

I would not rate ManiRatnam as the best director of Tamil films.
He derives concepts from movies he sees , then he mixes the same in his unique visual style. Now he has run out of ideas as viewers are having access to all the movies of the world straight away. I didn't see ET and was fooled in Anjali. I hadn't seen Godfather and got fooled in Nayagan and Agni Nakshatram. I hadn't seen "Nenjathai Killadhe" and got fooled in "Mouna Raagam". He is the most unoriginal film makers of Thamizh Film Industry and it is my opinion. However that doesn't make him a bad director. He can capture any human emotion in a beautiful way. His visual sense, what I would call "frame enhancement" sense is really good, though in movies like Bombay even that too fell off the roof. Offlate he is struggling with his experiments on screenplay sadly.

The connection is mre than just a song cinefan.
if you see the way MR had portrayed anjali, it is as if
she is an extra terrestrial and not a specially challenged human kid.
In fact he goes on to kill her in a way SS (Steven Spielberg) chose to put ET's life in peril towards the climax, just to create a BO impact. Now today MR's fans are criticising Bala for finishing off ovies with a tragic ending!!!! Atleast Bala's characters are shaped in a way that the tragic ending is the only hope left. But in anjali, a really sensitive director would have given hope (coming from a director who gave an open ended climax for Idhayathai Thirudaadhe where both the lead characters are certified to be suffering from chronic illness!!!). After Anjali it was clear that MR would take any subject for sensationalising it and making money out of it (once he was called money ratnam).Then he took Kashmir issue and tried to sensationalise the kidnappings in Kashmir. My friend happened to be a colleague of Mufti mohammed Sayeed's daughter(a doctor) who was kidnapped and whose return was secured by releasing a terrorist. It was a harrowing time for both that doctor and the family of IndianOil company's executiive who was killed by terrorists after the release of the movie Roja.
After the movie, even the people who would have otherwise gone to kashmir refrained from doing that. Terrorists were shown in a very human light in that movie as well.

Too much gore

Sivagiri (Vijay) is a doting brother and a responsible son. The scene shifts from the village when his sister Karpagam (Mallika) is married to a man in Chennai.

He finds the city infested with criminals and underworld dons. And of course there is the corrupt police official. Though shocked by the atrocities he keeps away from the menacing forces.

Till they would not let him be. His close friend Kannappan (Benjamin) is ruthlessly murdered at a cinema complex and Sivagiri is not going to turn a blind eye to their bloody cruelty any longer.

The film halts at an impressive point, and when action resumes you expect some very astute moves from the hero. But he adopts the usual routine of warning the villains over phone before finishing them off.

However, in a couple of scenes Sivagiri does prove that he's a commendable combo of brain and bravery.

Vijay portrays emotion and action with �lan and if the hero begins to choose scripts that are more challenging and different, it would be a field day for viewers. Sibling affection, comedy and serious expression come easily to Vijay.

The heroine is Trisha � and expected to look chirpy and radiant, she fills the bill. Mallika has all the makings of a character actor and she proves it once again. It is a big break for Benjamin and he makes proper use of it. Why has such an experienced artiste such as M. N. Rajam not been properly used? Prabhakar's art concentrates on being natural and captures the ordinary household in the village and city aptly.

But why is it that bad men have to meet at a precarious height on an unfinished building at least in one or two scenes?

Saravanan's cinematography is a highlight of Vijay's introduction scene because the camera angles help establish the larger than life image of the hero straightway.

If it's Dhina it has to be more of din and less of sound. The composer doesn't seem to believe in anything that falls softly on the ears.

Of the seven songs, Manisharma and Devi Sriprasad have composed one each.

Unwarranted sequences (like the Chaya Singh number) and disruptive duets mar the pace of "Thiruppachi."

Yet Vijay's portrayal and writer-director Perarasu's intelligence come to the fore now and then

`Maya Kannadi� starts rolling on March 1!

After the yet to be released Aadum Koothu Cheran and Navya Nair are back in Maya Kannadi a modern love story set in Chennai milieu.

In fact Cheran is moving away from his usual stories set in village backdrop and Maya Kannadi is a city based love story that develops between two people with some peppy songs tuned by Ilayaraja.

And guess what Cheran and Navya are playing in Maya Kannadai? They both play beauticians in a beauty parlour. While Cheran works on the ground floor in a parlour for men, Navya is the main hair cutter and beautician on the first floor exclusively for ladies!

Initially both the characters are at loggerheads with each other playing one-man upmanship games which lead to love. Pasupathy also plays an important character adding to the fun and frolic.

Recently Navya Nair conducted a thulabharam (weighing herself in sugar) at the Sri Krishna Temple in Guruvayoor for getting the Kerala State award. Moviebuzz spoke to Navya who is busy preparing for her BA exams in Kerala- �I will join the shoot on March 10 and is looking forward to doing Maya Kannadi which will be a milestone in my career�.

If you thought Gautam Menon would take a break after finishing Vettaiyadu Villaiayadu, you are off the mark. Here is the announcement folks, which we are the first to tell you, that Gautam�s next film is titled Parundhu. It has Sarathkumar in the lead. The film goes on the floors tomorrow, which happens to be Gautam�s birthday too. Simran was talked about as the heroine, but we have news that recent Padmasree awardee Shobana would play the leading lady.

There cannot be a Gautam film without Jothika and she plays an important character. Knowing Gautam�s penchant for fast-paced action we can expect Parundhu to be a racy hunt. Will this be a cop story again? We are very sure that it would indeed be a different one. It is good news for Tamil fans that Shobana makes an appearance after a long gap. Now tell us about Vetayadu Vilayadu? How has the film shaped out?
As you all know, it is another cop film, but more into investigation than encounters like in Kaakha Kaakha. There will be plenty of action and thrills in the film that was shot in New York and Chennai. We have made the film slick and technically superior with some romance thrown in. It was my dream to direct Kamal and he plays his age. Harris Jayaraj's music and background score is a major asset. Now post production work is in full swing and the film will release on April 14.

Today being your birthday, how do you plan to spend the day?
The shooting for my new film titled Vilai Uyirendraalum is starting today and it will go on from morning to 6 pm in the evening. Sarath Kumar is the hero with Shobana and Jyothika as the two leading ladies. It is again a different love story with some twists..

Could you tell us the one-line story of Vilai Uyirendraalum?
(Laughs) My story is just one-line and if I tell you that, then nothing is left.

But why did you choose to do a film with Sarath Kumar and not a young hero?
Let me tell you that I don�t write scripts for heroes. This story needed a mature hero who is middle aged. Vikram could have done the role but I thought that Sarath was the right choice. When I told him the script, he jumped at it and readily gave me immediate dates. Shobana is one of the finest actors in our country. Tabu and Kamalinee were also considered but no one can replace Sobhana as the character I have conceived in my script. Then Jo too plays a crucial role.

So where is today's birthday bash?
It will be a quiet birthday. We will be shooting the whole day and in the evening, I will be taking my family out for a private dinner (smiles).

i hear after this vikram will be working with goutham by the end of the year... but this movie should have had Vikram.... why Sharath... Vikram deserves to have directors like Goutham... sharath doesn't.
