As far as Moonram Pirai is concernced, I think Kamal deserves the national award, which went to Sridevi, for his last few minutes acting. |

Hats off to these 2 Greats for acheiving this feat.
Sometime, approx a year or something back, there were talks about Kamal and Mani Rathnam doing a new movie together, remember reading in some Kamal interview that Mani was working on the script. Wonder what happened, no news about it after that. I hope they do make a movie again together very soon. Also, very recently, there were talks about Kamal and Shankar joining hands again. No updates after that. |

there's no denying that nayagan was a landmark film, especially for south indian cinema. for one, it made the northern film fraternity sit up and look this side. but it also started off a rather silly preocupation for and abuse of technique which touched pits in mani's films like agninakshatram and geetanjali (idayathei thirudathe)...but my point is that quality is certainly not all what these guys had in mind when they sat down and made the list. yeah, it's just a list made by a couple of people but we again tend to display our fascination for recognition, whenever it comes from the white man. and about aggressive marketing, again, why do you have to market a film aggressively if you are sure about its universal appeal. i'm not saying that one should make his films and keep mum but one shouldn't package your intellectual property to suit the westerner's tastes either... i remember maniratnam chopping off all songs from anjali to screen it in some overseas festival. of course, now the trend is reversed.. more songs the merrier.

Girish, One reason is that Kamal wants Raajkamal to produce the movie if one happens, while Mani Sir wants it to be in his Madras Talkies banner. Recently, in an interview with Jaya TV (it's launch in Malaysia), Kamal was asked the same question. He replied that after having worked with Mani in Nayagan, people's expectation would be very high and they would have to carefully do a movie which will live upto the expectation. He gave an analogy of admiring a house of cards (Nayagan), and not wanting to disturb it, lest it may come crashing down. He also said somewhere else that they have been talking about it for some time now and "this has to be the longest discussion held over a movie" alwarpet_andavan |

Bingo! Cinefan, believe it or not, I was just about to post the name of the movie after looking up the net, and you beat me to it. Thanks once again. At least now I can refer to the movie as "Kaliyattom" and not "that Malayaalam movie that is based on Othello....".
Cheers. |

Nayagan was a well made movie, great narrative, great acting, great cinematograohy. Obviously it was seen by people overseas and they have placed it on the top 100 Time mag list. |

In fact there is one Malayaalam film I saw on TV a few years ago that blew my mind. The film is based on Shakespeare's Othello and set in a rural community of dancers. But how many people in other countries have seen it? What is the Indian film fraternity doing about this? |
