Great cameos/supporting roles in Tamil Cinema ?!

just thought of starting a thread in a different direction - too much focus seems to be on actors, directors, even music directors. but some of the most memorable performances in tamil films have come from the people playing the smaller roles. Examples:

* karthik in "Mouna Ragam"
* rajni as alex pandian in "Moondru Mugam"
* muthuraman in "Ethirneecchal"
* janakaraj in "Roja"
* goundamani in "Sinagaravelan"
* prakash raj in "Kannathil Muthamittal

these are some performances which may have been small in terms of screen time, but have left a great impact on the films themselves.

opinions, anyone ?!

I never thought I would say this, but Napolean's role in Virumaandi was pretty strong. (I've never been fond of Napolean as the main actor, but this role was good).

-Atul Kulkarni in Hey Ram
-Nasser in a whole heap of movies, including Hey Ram, Virumaandi, Kuruthi Poonal, Avvai Shanmugi, etc.
-Prakashraj in a quite a number of movies, including Kannathil M.
Mdm S.N.Lakshmi in a number of movies like Mahanathi, Virumaandi, MichaelMathanaKaamaRaj, etc.

another good supporting actor is the guy who played the police constable Sambandham (Janakaraj's bungling assistant) in Singeetham's "Apoorva Sagotharagal" - the man with the famous lines "Engayo poiteenga saar" !!

don't know his name, but the same guy also had an interesting cameo in another Singeetham film "Magalir Mattum", where he played the hospital patient, with the memorable "Technology has improved very much" !!

The :engeyo poyitteenga sir" guy's name is R.S.Sivaji.. he is an Asst. Director as well.

My recommendation to this list is Pasupathi in Iyarkai, Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan in Thevar Magan, and Rajinikanth in Naan Vaazha Vaippen.

that "2 to 2 to 2:2" scene was one of the best in the "Anbe Sivam", highlighting the subtle, understated brand of humour which was one of the hallmarks of the film

Chandrasekar's acting in a number of movies has been very good...like in Nizhalgal, Oru Thalai Ragaam, Samsaaram athu Minsaaram are the films that come to mind right now

For once in a million chances, I agree with Gaayu. Prakash Raj is the best supporting actor in Tamil cinema. Infact, Gilli could not have become a hit if not for Prakash Raj's "chellammmmmm... I luv youda" 8)

Gilli would have become a hit either way, Crab. Of course Prakash Raj is brilliant, but the story and Vijay's mass appeal, cool comic performance, played a huge part in taking the films to greater heights.

Yeah tamilsify but it wouldn't of been like this, probably a bit less hit, but it would of still been a hit. The only reason y ma dad likes is cos of prakash rajas acting, e does like da film but as soon as prakash raj is on the screen he cums 2 watch nd then goes.

Yes! Prakash Raj a good supporting actor. He was so stylish in Azhagiye Theeye. I liked his role in Giri also. I watched that movie becos of Prakash Raj though I'm not Arjun's fan. He's got a charming smile

Btw, is his first appearance in tamil movies pulla kuttikaran - as the character obsessed with Sangeetha? I used to hate him for that kind of roles...

Another supporting actor I like is Raghuvaran. He has done many supportive roles some I can remember are Love Today - friendly dad to Vj, Thullithirintha Kaalam - strict dad to Karan, Mugavari - supportive bro to Ajith, Uyirile kalanthathu - anti-brother to Surya

more additions to the list:

- nasser in "Indira" - small yet important role
- nizhalgal ravi in "Nayagan" - if it hadn't been for his character, kamal haasan would've been denied one of his most famous, most-imitated oppaari scenes
- nasser and kitty in "Bombay" - of course, mani ratnam's masterstroke here was to cast nasser as the hindu brahmin and kitty as the muslim "bhai" - talk about secularism !!!

I don't recall which film, but this is the scene:

A crowded railway station, Kamal walks in non-chalantly cigarette danglin from his lips. Someone bumps into him and the cigarette falls. He looks, it's not just a butt but a nearly unsmoked cigarette; too much to let go. He looks around if anybody is watching and silently picks it up and putts it back in the mouth and walks away whistling.

That's all he does in the film. A brilliant 30 sec cameo. Amazing scene. Kamal rules.

Can someone help me with the film here.

my opinion about Cameo roles are shouldn't overshadowed the main role..... that is my major opinion...

the impression should be there at audience but not in the movie script..... thats a real fact....

for my point of view....
- PrakashRaj's character in Alagiya Theeyee... is really good one...
- Ajith role in Unnidathil Ennai Koduthaen and Nee Varuvaayena are really good one... his acting is good and not shading the main hero role et all...

-i dont Agree Vijay in as Cameo Role... coz surely he will over shaded the Main role... recent example is Sukran......
even in Friends, the actual story is based on Surya character only... in tamil Vijay shadowed surya character....

-Karthik in Mouna raagam and some other films are really good...

kamal also a good choice for that....

another enchanting cameo was in balu mahendra's "sathi leelavathi" - the old man who played ramesh aravind's father. really good !!
by the way, the same guy also appeared in a balu mahendra serial called "kadhai neram" on sun tv a few years ago - a serial, by the way, much appreciated by mature audiences for its subtle handling of typical middle-class issues - very different from the usual mamiyaar-marumagal nonsense !!

this old man appeared in a few editions of this serial as well - anyone know his name ?

1.. Janakaraaj in naayagan - would like to recall a famous scene;

Kamal's daughter slaps J'raaj, then kamal slaps the daughter and asks 'yaarukitta irunthu vanthathu intha kai neetuRa pazhakkam' (very natural thing for a father to ask), then J'raaj would respond 'nammakitta irunthuthaan'

That's really an unforgettable scene !!

2. Janakaraj in 'en bommukutti ammAvukku' - a sAppAttu raaman lawyer

S'raj comes to meet J'raaj to tell about the Priest's death. When S'raj relates the incident - j'raaj interupts him eternally and ask him 'saappAttukku munnAdiyA? sAppAttukku pinnadiyA?' . At one point s'raj gets mad and raises his hand to slap j'raj - he would hold s'raj's hand - smell it - and then calmly , with his kOnal sirippu say - 'nee innum saapdala athaan unakku kObam varuthu' - Superb performance!!

3. Vivek in kaadhal mannan.

His name is Chokkappa Bhagavathar. He also acted in Balu Mahendra's Veedu. He is from the generation prior to Sivaji's era and I believe he has acted in quite a few movies (as a hero).

Talking of Sati Leelevathi,it was a great supporting performance from Kamal&Kovai Sarala.

Madhavan was excellent in Anbe Shivam.

Waiting for someone to answer Prabhu's query on the Kamal cameo.I have not seen the film at least don't remember seeing such a scene in the films I have seen.

that's right - JRaj's performance in "Nayagan" will probably go on to become part of Tamil cinema folklore...

another great scene from the same film - when Kamal surrenders to the police - the scene which shows him performing the rites for his wife's "thithi" and the police brigade arriving to arrest him.

as nasser stands upright waiting for kamal - kamal looks up, and acknowledges him with a slight, hardly noticeable gesture, as if to say "vanakkam", and receiving no response from nasser, tilts his head slightly, as if heaving a sigh ... and makes another ever-so-subtle gesture as if to say "pogalaam !"

there's not a single line of dialogue in the entire scene - and yet so much is conveyed !! amazing

This is kins off-topic but I'll blame Ramsri for getting me worked up on Nayagan.

The scene is in an Velu Nayakar's terrace. Selvam (Janakaraj) has been arrested and the 'boys' are reporting.Kamal gives them a thorough dressing down.And is on the verge of swearing when one of the guys is a Aiyyappa devotee there. Kamal pauses to mumble 'Sami saranam ' and dismisses him 'Po Po' before he gets back to tirade mode

This is again off topic but since Roshan spoke of Nayakan being a well crafted movie,I would like to take the names of two more Kamal movies-Guna&Mahanadi which didn't exactly set the BO on fire but brings a lump to the throat every time I watch it, never get tired watching them everytime on TV.I have seen very few discussions on these movies in the Hub,wonder why?????

Why dont some one open up a thread exclusively for Kamal films and discuss the films and scenes we enjoyed most? But we should make sure only Kamal films are discussed and should not allow craps like who is best Kamal or Rajini, who is next to Kamal - danush or simbu kinds.

Does the idea sound alright?

Go ahead and dispute this, but I thought Senthil's performance in 'Malaioor Mamutiyan' was pretty good. He basically breezed through the movie with a little comedy and also lent support to Mamutiyan. Then came the surprise ending with Senthil's character killing Mamutiyan. Pretty good.

BTW, whatever happened to Senthil? Is he still in the movie business?

Hey I was about to say this !! That was a superb character and Sujatha's dialogues gave additional strength to it. The scene I enjoyed most is .. At one point Manikandan feels guilty and ashame of what he is doing by sticking to Senthil and says 'thoo ithuvum oru pozheppA" ....

Then Senthil would take out a diary and start saying 'thambi.. appadi sollaatha.. ithu onnum lEsana vElai illa.. and say intha diary-a paaru.. and start listing out all the locations, places and time for annadaanam, sAppaadu etc ..while doing it - in addition to the temples and other religious places he would also add "vijayakanth veetula eppa saappadu pOduvanga. A.R Rahman veetula eppa biriyani pOduvaanga.. ' ellaam intha diary-la maintain paNNurEn. And finally would say 'Information is wealth" - Sujatha was marvelous there !!

Kamal produced this movie in Hindi with Randhir kapoor playing Nasser's role,Heera-Revathi's,Seema Biswas-Rohini's,Kamal himself-Nagesh's.Don't know who played the role Urvashi did oh-so brilliantly in Tamil.Ex-lyricist Shailendra's son was the director(debut).i wonder why Kamal didn't release the movie at all-Theatres,TV,VCD/DVD.

also the performance in "Oora Therinjikitten" - with pandiarajan ... senthil actually had a pretty substantial role in the film, considering it really didn't have any such thing as a comedy track.

remember the evergreen auction scene - "Aayiram", "Rendaayiram", "Naalayiram" finishing off with "Mama Biscothu" or "Bimbiliki Bilaabi" !!!

i remember reading a feature on Sukran somewhere that clarified the rationale behind vijay's cameo in the film. seems S.A.Chandrashekaran's funda here was to use vijay's *star value* to promote the up-and-coming ravi krishna.
apparently the same formula had been used by him in a previous flick, only on that occasion it was vijayKANTH being used to promote vijay, who was then a fledgling actor.

pity i missed that one!! anyone seen it?
