My take on Raavan Vs Raavanan Its indeed sad that VM wasn't explicated to the beauty of 'Behne de' got struck with thekkumaram - theekuchi love stories. Still I dont have no complaints and I think he is good in 'Usure poguthey'.

Mani not to go to Lanka

Mani Ratnam today clarified that neither his forthcoming film 'Raavanan' be screened nor would he participate in the International Indian Film Academy's (IIFA) Film Festival to be held from June 3 to 5 in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a function in Chennai, he said, "It is known to everyone that a special show of 'Raavanan' was planned at the event. However, the film will not be screened as the post-production work is not over."

Stating that the film would be ready only by June, the filmmaker said that he would not participate in the film festival. Asked whether Aishwarya Rai would participate in the event, he said that he could not interfere in her decision and it was her wish whether to participate or not.

Raavanan - The Real Hero

Perhaps this is the most anticipated film in recent times. Rightly so given the cast and crew assembled. Produced and directed by Mani Ratnam, ‘Raavanan’ stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai and Prithviraj in the lead roles. The other cast comprises Prabhu, Karthik, Priyamani, Ranjitha, Munna and others.

‘Raavanan’ is inspired from the Asokavanam episode in Ramayanam. It is a modern day version of the episode where Raavanan kidnaps Sita and keeps her in Asokavanam. Later Raman ventures to save his wife and bring her back.

The story of ‘Raavanan’ is said to be this. Dev (Prithviraj) is a police officer who falls in love with a classical dancer Ragini (Aishwarya Rai) and marries her. Post marriage Dev is posted in a tribal town controlled by Veera (Vikram) whose writs alone control the people of the town. Veera, the warlord is seen as challenger and the law enforcers lead by Dev believe the key to bringing order to the place is to crush Veera.

In an attempt to vanquish Vikram, Prithviraj misses the target and kills Priyamani who is the sister of Vikram. An infuriated, Vikram kidnaps Aishwarya Rai and takes her into the forest. This draws Prithviraj into the forest and the forest becomes their battle ground. The dense, confusing and scary jungle sets in motion a string of events which test their beliefs and change their fortunes. When Prithviraj finds Aishwarya in the jungle he suspects her womanhood. A new battle then begins which becomes a battle between good and evil; Raavanan and Raman and at the end they all confront many truths. You can be sure of a startling climax typical of the creative genius Mani Ratnam.

So how are the characters in Ramanyam linked? Prithviraj plays a character inspired by Raman, Vikram enacts the role of Raavanan and Aishwarya the role of Sita. The supporting characters are also worked out something like this. Karthik is the modern day Hanuman and Munna is the brother Lakshmanan. Priyamani plays the role of Raavanan's sister Soorpanakai. The role played by Prabhu and Ranjitha are not known yet.

‘Raavanan’ brings together Prabhu and Karthik after more than a decade. The have the same fire they had in ‘Agni Natchathram’.

Vikram has said “Acting in ‘Raavanan’ is like being part of three Mani Ratnam projects, because, each and every scene was shot thrice”

Aishwarya also has an equally powerful role. Probably this is the film which would bring out the real talents of Aishwarya.

The contemporary and modern Indian classical dancer Astad Deboo has choreographed a climactic life and death dance sequence with a tandav of passion, revenge and liberation for Ash. This is a fusion of kathak, ballet and contemporary dance which will show Ash in a new light. The steps are complex and new and Ash had danced bare feet on slippery ground. She also did the steps twice over and in quick succession, first with Abhishek for the Hindi and then with Vikram for the Tamil.

Another surprise from Aishwarya is going to be her voice in Tamil. Ash has painstaking dubbed her voice for Tamil and nobody will be able to say she is not a Tamilian after hearing her speak. And making her more beautiful in the film is the celebrated fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee who has designed clothes for Ash in ‘Raavanan’.

The film was extensively shot in numerous locations around India including Pollachi, Ooty, Chalakudy, Athirapally of Kerala, Jhansi, Kolkata, Mahabaleshwar and in the Malshej Ghats in Maharashtra. Picturesque locations like the forest near the Athirapally waterfalls in Kerala is going to be real treat to the eyes. Athirapally waterfalls seem to be Mani's favourite location as had filmed ‘Uyire’ song “Ennuyire”, and the ‘Guru’ song “Venmegam” at the same location earlier.

The cinematography is by Santosh Sivan, who replaced Manikandan as the cameraman and he has given the film a never before seen look and feel. Mani Ratnam – Santosh Sivan duo has worked wonders before in blockbuster like ‘Roja’, ‘Thalapathi’, ‘Iruvar’ and ‘Uyire’.

‘Raavanan’ has numerous action scenes of the Kerala martial art form kalarippayattu. Kalatipattu exponents Sunil and his brothers who have trained celebrities like SRK and Jackie Chan have composed the action scenes.

‘Raavanan’ is a tri-lingual also made simultaneously in Hindi as ‘Raavan’ and ‘Villain’ in Telugu. With Abhiskek Bachchan playing the title role and Vikram plays the role of Rama. Aishwarya Rai plays the role of Sita in all three versions.

Audience expects ‘Ravannan’ to be the best of Mani till date. By raising intriguing questions on the protagonist like did such a man ever exist? Is ‘Raavanan’ the line that divides Good from Evil? Is there a Ram inside Raavan? And a Raavan inside each of us? Mani Ratnam has opened our minds to question our conscience.

Music of the movie is composed by Oscar winner A R Rahman with lyrics penned by Vairamuthu. It features 6 songs and the music was soft launched on May 5 by Sony Music.

‘Raavanan’ is produced by Mani Ratnam under the banner of Madras Talkies at a budget of Rs. 55 crores. Being his home production, Mani Ratnam has not compromised anything for the quality. He has even brought specific dogs that look like wolves from Australia for a whopping Rs.3 crores for a particular scene.

‘Raavanan’ is distributed by Madras Talkies and Big Cinemas and will hit the screens on June 18, 2010.

Now that the stage is set for Raavanan’s release, the battle seems to have already begun for procuring the rights of the Tamil version. Many top production houses are reportedly vying for Mani’s magnum opus’ television and distribution rights.

The movie is slated for a June release, simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi. While Abhishek Bachchan – Vikram – Aishwarya play the lead in the Hindi version, the Tamil version will have Vikram – Prithviraj -- Aishwarya playing the same roles. Rahman scores for the movie, the songs of which are already a rage.

Vikram is a very good actor and he is in a different league. And Maddy is Maddy..

As per me Vikram HAD the potential of making it really big (I mean Really Really Big) in Tamil pilim endustry . Late start, some major hiccups and still he made it this far itself is truly a great achievement.

Having said that I don't remember any other new generation actor with this kind of acting skills and charm in recent time, who really works hard on his scripts.. (ofcourse for kandasami.. he must have been high on something I still can't believe that he agreed to do that movie. )

I respect him. I really wish in ravan , he out performs.. aapeshake. Carries movie on his shoulder.. than anyone elses..

Or VB territory in terms of a complex character from literature, which Mani had also done, albeit with less effect in Thalapathy. There are of course Visual cues to both VB and Bala (and quite a lot of Santosh Sivan's own films - Ashoka, especially - Thok de Killi teaser strongly suggests this), but like Maddy, the narrative & thematic content will be much different...

Thamizh - fyi - all the post regarding Madhavan/vikram were happening in Mani Ratnam's thread (which is a neutral thread) and not Raavan's thread. And there were some *context* to those discussions. I only questioned Sanjeevi's bling comment and pulling Madhavan totally out of context.

Both you and (even Pras know I think) that I'm a Vikram fan as well. and I've said many times that Vikram is the best bet among the current generation heroes to do a angry young man/masala hero roles! But, in general, as an actor my preference is for Madhavan over Vikram - because Madhavan is a more spontaneous actor and brings more depth into whatever role he plays.

That is not true. That was never posted in Raavan's thread. As I said above, it was posted in Mani Ratnam's thread (which is a neetral thread, I say). Thanks to too many digressions in MR's thread, Nov (or may be some other mod), moved it over to a new one.

i didnt say vikram wont act well, ajith/maddy suit urban/corporate roles better anyday - anyways, its a hypothesis(whether vikram can or not) on a hypothetical situation(ravanan in a urban milieu) - it doesent make sense to me now....

I am sure for some TN people even Vayyappuri is better than AB. So no point discussing about it. I am sure your most favourite director knows better otherwise he wouldn't have cast AB in 3 of his movies.

Prasanna has that typical pakkathu veettu payyan look and his cute kinda smile will not suit any tough roles - Period. Mani Ratnam's Raavan has just been given a new song, thanks to that poet par excellence Gulzar who saw the film and suggested the embellishment. The director, always open to fresh ideas from his team, readily agreed. Composer Rahman was informed and that's how Raavan got a new song.

Gulzar Saab, who just back from Goa after participating in the stage rendition of four of his plays, says the song was almost a gift he owed Mani Ratnam for gifting him something that he, Gulzar, had never received in his entire 47-year old career as a lyricist.

Mani sent the poet-lyricist a note after the release of the Raavan music congratulating Gulzar Saab for the songs.

Says Gulzar Saab, "In my entire career I've never received such a heartwarming endorsement of my work. I received a note from Mani Ratnam congratulating me and saying he's very proud of the music. And look at the humility of this genius. No filmmaker has ever sent me a note like this. Mani is the only one. And this one gesture has enhanced my respect for him even more."

Not only this gesture, Gulzar Saab also received an invitation from Mani to see the film at a special screening for which the poet flew down to Chennai recently.

It was there that the new song suddenly happened.

Recounts Gulzar Saab, "After editing Raavan, Mani wanted me to watch the film. No filmmaker invites even the technical crew for a preview, let alone the lyricist. I flew down to Chennai to watch the film. I'd never do something like this for anyone else. This is how strongly I feel about this man's humility and greatness."

As the end-credits rolled and Rahman's music began, Mani Ratnam and Gulzar Saab thought there ought to be a song at the end.

That's how Gulzar Saab wrote an additional number for Raavan... 'Ab Iss Shareer Ke Sirey Khol Dey/Aur Goongi Aatma Ko Bol Dey'.

Says Gulzar Saab, "Both Mani and I felt the music that Rahman had composed for the end titles was too beautiful to go wordless. We decided to give words to Rahman's creation."

Rahman was then given the task of turning the music piece into a song. Interestingly neither Mani Ratnam nor A. R. Rahman fully understands Gulzar's Urdu poetry.

Defends Gulzar Saab, "But they are never short of questions. Never does a word go in until Mani is fully convinced of its relevance. He's never hesitant about asking. I would be appalled if my words were accepted blindly by a director. Even if his Urdu is weak, Mani has a terrific sense of poetry and images."

Because slumdog millionaire was nominated for OSCAR as bset picture, that helped ARR to win an oscar. If he had done that in some other movie (the same music), he would not have received that much acclaim. So, we can go on say like that or not?

Agree with you. So far, the trailer and the songs promo were very unimpressive not to mention Mani's philosophical take on "Raavan".

As recent example, VTV's trailer was unimpressive but the movie turned out otherwise. So, you never know until the movie is out.

There are three grosses. One is total gross and net gross (after taxes) and distributor share (after taxes and theatre cost). It may be total gross what you are talking about. Distributor share is what distributor gets finally after all deductions.

In the last decade, Alaipayuthey was a superhit. Even in B & C, it had a very decent run. Kannathil Muthamittaal crossed 100 days in Chennai. in other centres, it had a 30-40 day run. AE too had the same fate. Guru was a superhit in Mumbai but the dubbed version flopped in TN including Chennai.

Mani ensures that the budget does not go beyond certain limits. He plans in such a way that ROI is not affected at any cost. The actors are paid much lesser than their market value. So are the technicians.. Brand Mani serves this purpose.

I really do not know why that movie had to be such a disaster. Recently I watched Oru Thalai Raagam and it was blockbuster during those days. KM is far more entertaining and engaging than oru thalai Raagam. IMO KM is MR best work since Anjali. What happened to the taste of Tamil people all of a sudden.

BTW the site I published is the most reliable site for indian box office because it give all details about the collections including various grosses. I have never seen anyone saying that the information is incorrect from that site. It also has the record for all bollywood movies from the beginning. For example you can verify even ek duje keliye collection there. 80 crores may be the total gross. After all deduction it would be only around 20 crores. Even 3 idiots which collected 400 crores eventually had only around 100 crores for distributor share. In case of tamil movie distributor share is 180 to 200 percent of hindi movies because we don't have state tax for tamil movies. Please try to understand all components before jump to conclusions. No BM may be guru is bigger than Don if you include south Indian market. Because box office india has accurate collection only for the states other than TN, KL, AP and KN. But still guru is just hit and it collected only few crores over the production cost as distributor share. There can be no denying fact on that. BTW Big B also said Delhi 6 is much better movie than Slumdog Millionaire and recommended everyone to see that movie.

I am not a person who would assume a film to be a hit if it crosses 100 days. I was just mentioning it as a fact. I don't think Mani is that kind of person who would spend from his pocket to make a film run.. Remember what Kamal said when he was asked why he was not working with Mani? Moreover, knowing ppl close to Mani, I am pretty sure abt this. Also check wikipedia. The film's gross revenue is much more than the making cost.

In Nagercoil, Tirunelveli the film crossed 35 days and I am pretty sure about it. I saw the film for 3 successive sundays in Bombay theatre, TVL just for its Bgm score. I was also tracking the film's run for only one reason. It was composed by the person I respect the most!!! Mathabadi, Mani padam hit/flop.. I don't care much..

Regarding Kamal- Mani combination, there are several factors which did not work. SuhAsini was messenger for this combination. Kamal wanted to produce this movie for that MR did not agree. Then Kamal wanted to have the distribution rights for certain area and that also MR denied. Finally Kamal asked for big salary which was also denied. If you followed the whole episode you might have understood this.

Rahman was not booked for Roja firsthand by Mani. It was for another film under his production. Since the film was not happening by then, Mani moved to Roja with KB as producer and Rahman was retained for this project too. So in all probability, the salary of Rahman should'Ve been decided by Mani if I am not wrong.

U did not get the point... For example consider Some X hero can make sure a opening a 50 lakh .. With MR and ARR added say the opening shd be on par with 80 lakhs or so.. Then it is grand opening.. Ivanaga ellaamum saernthu verum 55 lakh or 60 lakh kammiyaa varuthunnaa then it is not grand opening..

athaan solla vanthen.. For Aazhutha ezhuththu's start cast the opening should have been extremely good in that ratio i was talking abt.. But i doubt and not sure though...

After a long holiday period kids have to enter new classes...Some kids may enjoy new atmosphere and some may miss the holiday euphoria. New teachers, new class rooms and new friends....Every student gets June confusion syndrome...

Come to our cinema, June is the month for big releases for the past few years...Sivaji, Dasavatharam and this year the great Raavanan....

Expectation meter is going high day by day...Awaiting for the release date and awaiting for the advance booking....Usually the story will not be disclosed for any Mani Ratnam movie before...In Raavanan too this is the case. But we may understand some unique features of this film by seeing this films promotional clips and stills...

Unique Features of Ravanan:

[1] The title of the film itself creates eagerness among the people...Raavanan - the negative shade name for the positive shade hero...But nobody knows the hero's or Raavanan's character will be portrayed positively or negatively....Nobody can guess the shape up of Raavanan's character in this film...

[2] This is the first film in which a hero, Vikram [? Villain? Hero ] has acted in contrary roles in two different versions...In Hindi version as Ram and in Tamil version as Raavanan....Nobody in the film industry all over the world may get such a great opportunity other than Vikram...Already a national award winner. I'll be skipping this film guys... Vikram is an great actor but somehow I'm into this film... since its shot mostly in the forests and looks traditional and all... There are very few movies that i actually liked of that type one exception is Lagaan for Aamir Khan's superb performance.... I prefer movies that are more modern and shot in cities with modern equipment like computers, cell phones, shopping malls etc .... regardless of what I like I know this film will be an massive hit because of the names Vikram, Aishwarya, Mani Ratnam, Prithviraj and Rahman itself so I'm wishing the whole Raavan crew superb success for their tremendous efforts

Sify.com is starting a countdown to the eagerly awaited movie of the year Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan in Tamil.

The film is a tri-lingual in Hindi (Raavan) and Telugu (Villain). It is being marketed by Reliance Big Pictures and is scheduled to release worldwide in all three languages on June 18.

Raavanan features Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj in the lead along with Karthik, Prabhu and Priyamani in supporting roles. The music of AR Rahman is already a hit. The film is now being graded for colour correction in Adlabs in Mumbai by its cinematographer Santosh Sivan.

The tri-lingual is the most ambitious project of Mani Ratnam. In his director’s note, Mani Ratnam asks the question- Ten heads, Ten minds, A hundred voices- One Man. Did such a man ever exist…? Was he just a myth…or a metaphor…?

Are Ten Heads better than one…?
Is there a Ram inside Raavan ? And a Raavan inside each of us?
This along with its slick three minutes trailer has created a big buzz around the film. The audio launch of the film was done in style by Ratnam, which made the hype bigger as expectations have reached an all new high.

Well you will have to wait 18 days more for the big day when all three versions of the film will hit 2000 odd screens worldwide. We at sify, will be updating you on the biggest release in Indian cinema.

All I want this film to be is a good entertainer, that might leave me with something to think about at the end of it. I think if MR's opted for the overly philosophical, artsy type of thing its probably gonna be kinda boring.

he doesent need to in first place.......when pallavi-anupallavi, unaroo were made - the freshness in approach and pathbreaking stuffs it had were much more than what paruthiveeran or VKK had.....mani has already done that and he has shown his versatility and transformed the entire commercial cinema to a new path with nayagan/agni natchithram........

Was talking about Chikku Bukku Raiyle picturization last evening please do a favour and watch IR's "Raaja Raajathi Raaja" song from Agni Natchathiram that one song will put most of Shankar movies & all Sivaji song picturization to disgrace. Mani Ratnam’s eagerly awaited Raavan in Hindi and Raavanan in Tamil is scheduled to release on June 18. The post production work of the film is going on in Chennai and Mumbai simultaneously.

Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman are doing the final re-recording of the film at Rahman’s studio in Chennai. The maestro will be leaving Chennai for his “Jai Ho World Tour” starting next week. So before that, he is working day and night to complete the re-recording of all the three versions of the film.

Meanwhile Santosh Sivan is in Reliance Adlabs post production lab in Mumbai, doing the grading of the film. Santosh is very excited about the film and has been telling close friends that it is his best work with his all time favourite director the one and only “Mani Sir”.

IMO, I would say Andha Arabi Kadaloram was poor picturisation, it was not up to the hype it created But thats very few songs we can pick.

But overall Mani's song picturisation is awesome.
