After so long wait, Chandramukhi is releasing today. Have anyone seen the movie?

How is Rajini's performance? Is it better than all previous Rajini movies? Where it stand? What was viewers comment and theater atmosphere, etc.

Overall how do you feel? Eager to know the result.

Guys,

Saw the movie. Noon show at Coliseum cinema, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

The movies was great. Full fledged comedy with a substantive story. I would say
I liked it more than Baba.

I don't want to say what happens or anything on the storyline as I don't want to
spoil the thrill for anyone who has not watched.

But there is a special tribute to Shivaji in the movie which I felt was a nice
thing to do and also look out for who says the 'Repeatt' in the Devuda song.

Other than thalaivar, Jothika (who is my favourite actress) gave a very good
performance.

Vadivelu too was okay.

Another thing, in the credits there was a special mention for Kamal Hassan. Not
sure why. Can anyone clarify on this?

Watch the movie. You will definitely enjoy it.

In one word.... Super.

for CM,The first hand opinions as follows..

CM may not be satisfactory for Typical Rajini fans ..But others may appreciate the movie because of storyline and good acting of Joytika..Songs are picturised nicely.

I saw both MX and CM.

MX is much much better than CM.

In MX first half is very fast and second of slow compared with first half. but totally a good one. movie is not like other kamal movies. it is only 150 minutes.

In CM Rajini has acted thats all. there is nothing to say.

Any movie becomes a blockbuster only when the family audiences take to it in a big way.So whether it's CM or ME,these people will decide the final result.

Why don't you write a unbiased brief review of both movies.The opinions I am getting about ME is mixed,the majority have enjoyed it in a big way while some have not liked it.But the general opinion is that the first half moves in jet speed,there is a slight slackening for a brief while in the second half&then picks up again.There are no songs as 'Yele nee yetti po'is cut,"kurangu kaiyil malai'plays as BGM&only the pallavi&first charanam of 'Poo Poothathu'is picturised.

there is no briskness in Rajini. Defenitely Rajini fans won't like this movie. songs also not impressive. totally there is no point to tell anything better. I don't know why Rajini changed his mind?

.Well my friends, the majority of whom have applied leave here to go&see the movie also say the same thing-there's nothing for the common viewer-songs,fights,masala nothing.They say it's an intelligently crafted film out of a very simple premise.How I wish,I also could have seen the movie today.Sigh

In a recent interview Kamal said he does not actually like to have songs in his film because it interrupts the flow of the screen play.
He could be right.
But if he does not change his mindset, he can never ever give a block buster.

Its really intresting becoz some of my friends who are diehard rajini fans have mixed opinions on CM Some say the Rajini screen presence and charisma is missing but others say that it is a matured performance and it is time for Rajini to act his age and do meaningful roles 8) 8)

All reviews for MX has the word 'different'.
This is what makes me doubtful about its commercial success !!
I wish Kamal all the best for his effort in making 'diferent' types of movies.
I also hope he will learn the 'common' man's expectations from a movie.

First day, first show!

Fans of superstars are having a Tamil New Year feast in theatres across Tamilnadu. The shows started in the wee hours of the day and all the three biggies Chandramukhi, Mumbai Xpress and Sachin have taken a 100 to 120 percent opening!
In Chennai suburbs, ticket rates across the counter were Rs 100 and most of the theatres have overflowing audience sitting on the aisle or standing. The fans just wanted a good time and above all to see the film first day first show. The theatre management made a killing as the halls were overflowing beyond capacity.

All the releases carry average reports, nothing extraordinary. By Tuesday morning a clear picture will emerge. Meanwhile Vijay fans were disappointed that the Vijay-Bipasha sizzler song is missing as it was deleted after Madras High Court put a ban on the song.

Vijay told Sify.com: �Please inform my fans that by Monday we will try to work out something as we will try to put back the sexy number with a new tune and background score. I am happy by the way the film has shaped out�.

Since when have reviews mattered to the Tamilz audience??

Thirupaachi, Madurey, Giri, all got horrible reviews!!! But were still superhits! I don't see how people are doubting Chandramukhi's sucess!! No matter what happens, CM will take over Mumbai Xpress, and Sachien.

PS: Since when is Vijay being compared with Tamiz Monstrocities like Super Star Rajini, and Padmashree Kamal?? He isn't even in the race. Rajini and Kamal are in a whole different game than Vijay.

Chandramukhi is the winner for Sure!!!! I think that people have forgotten the Super Duper hits that our SuperStar has given in Padaiappa, Arunachalam, Baasha, Annamalai, etc etc. just because of BABA. BABA was a accident! BUt Chandramukhi will make up for Baba!

MX resembles Magalir Mattum. Both are essentially kidnap-based sitcoms. Magalir Mattum celebrated silver jubilee in all centres - urban and rural. I don't see why MX can't follow suit. But Kamal seems more keen on the Hindi market this time from the beginning. That's why he didn't bother to change title. He was ready for no show in Tamil market. Good judgment, I say!

even me, being a die hard rajini fan is a great fan of kamal's class and not his crass comediees.. i hate them after probably sathi leelavathy.. kamal's class.. wow.. he was awesome in hey ram, anbe sivam etc..., i dunno y ppl want to degrade a particular star if they like his opposite!

saw CM @ boleyn EastHam London on the 14th. a few Queries pls. i know the film was released a day bfr at southall himalaya palace, was it sold out/packed like it was at eastham? was there screaming and shouting etc... and was it �15 ticket price?

Long time no see! However, I did see Chandramukhi

Chandramukhi:
Pluses:
- Rajini's screen presence (man, he's still got that power)
- Jyothika's brilliant performance (Raa Raa song was superb)
- Vadivelu/Rajini comedy
- Songs

Minues:
- These mini roles that went to waste: Prabu, Nayanthara, Malavika, Vineeth (they were important, but they weren't given enough scope)
- Drags at times

Either way, my verdict is that Chandramukhi will definitely be the winner of this competition. Although it is no blockbuster, Baasha type, it is good in it's own way. And a Rajini film after a long time will run no matter what the odds. Congrats to the Chandramukhi Cast!

Mumabi express is getting rave reviews in Hindi... Saw news channels like Aaj Tak, Headlines Today, Channel 7, Star News all saying that ME is awesome.....

What amazes me is people are very excited about it being a Kamal Haasan movie..... Lotz of north indian fans..... and a lot of youn people in the crowds.....

The Channel 7 news does a unque review where they buy 5 tickets and take 4 people to the movie each of different age groups.....

All 4 liked the movie including the anchor and they rated it 6 stars out of 7.....

yes i guess that does mean you wont get tickets if u go early even.book tickets for the 6 o clock show.if you cant make it to the 6 o clock i guess u could try and make it to the 3 o clock but there will definately be no guarantees.i booked mine last night for 3 o clock show.

atlast I watched thalaivar's movie.. well It was not a hardcore Rajni movie..

Story:

almost the same of manichit.. no changes especially in second half, scene by scene.. first half they cud hav included something to satisfy rajni fans.. since that is a super hit story, it fitted well with this movie as well. So it gets 80/100

Rajni:
He hasn't lost his charisma yet.. man.. his eyes.. his walking style.. etc..,, the problem is that we cant see more of that in this movie.. the climax scene with the make up of that king... he looks amazing.. villianic looks and all.. His dialog delivery, his acting on comedy scenes were incredible....95/100

Jyotika:
After seeing shobhana's award winning performance.. i gotto say this... jyotika sucked big time... on those last few scenes she was *scary* in fact some of the kids/infants started crying out of fear... and one more thing is that she does nt know to dance at all... so for her.. 50/100

Prabu, Nasser:

prabu was pathetic most of the time... he doesnt know wht was he doing and he had nothing to do as well.. Nasser.. wht an actor he is?? wasted big time.. thot he was overacting.. 60/100

Nayantara and the other girls:

they ve absolutely nothing to do in the movie.. Nayantara I never thot that she was that fat and all.. But she did act well... I thot malavika looked extremely good .. 70/100

Vadivelu:

He was pretty good on most scenes and those double entendres.. absolutely unnecessary that too in a rajni movie.. i was disappointed.. 80/100

P.Vasu:

He is the worst part of the film.. the movie was made like in the 80s.. nothing to speak of his direction.. 50/100

Stunts where done pretty good.... good job by the stuntsman and the songs were very well picturized.. 90/100

Overall:

If you are looking for a batsha/padayappa kind of a movie.. thn CM is not ur cup of tea.. its like someother older Rajni movie.. anyways I did enjoy most part of it and most importantly all the family audience enjoyed the movie.. but not a few hardcore rajni fans.. no punch dialogs, heroism etc.., so i ll give 80/100....

on the whole no flaws on rajni's performance.. he has done this role to perfection and P.Vasu.. he is responsible for all the low aspects of this movie!!!!!!

This is my Unbiased view of CM although, Me being a great Superb * fan,

Story - Good Concept, different from others.

Music - BGM, was a big let down, I was missing IR/ARR

Songs - Except 'Devuda', 'Athinthom', and 'Raa raa', the rest are below VS standards, SPB saves the day, Athinthom, Reminds me of 'Mankuyile Poonguyile (karakatakaran)' and 'Vanamellas Shenbahapoo(some Karthik film)'.

Now here is the interesting bit

Superb * - Super pa, he looks really cool in shades, 8) 8) but on extreme close ups, age shows.

Thalaivar's opening was excellent, the way he walks, the way he does everything is excellent 8) 8) ,but I was missing the cigarette flicks , he looked excellent as the villain, bought back his golden villainish acting skills , the way he says 'kalalallalalakakak' bought thunderous applaud and whistling acrioss the cinema, most of crowd joined thalaivar in saying 'kalalalalakakak' , esp the kids amzing acting by thalaivar.

Cinema was packed, tickets were sold out, no body wanted to leave the seats, in case some one else steal their seat, it was that packed , same cinema (Streatham Odeon) showed Sachin on a smaller screen, very poor turn out for sachin(VJ must have been insane to Release his film on par with Superb *!), any way, as soon as the super * title came, thunderous applause, many started dancing around for Devuda, P.Vasu, RamKumar says Repeat in this song, why .

Rajni's opening received thunderous applause,

Jothika, she was acting OK, though I think Meena would have done a better job, as she did a splendid job in Shock!

Vadivule + Rajni was really hilarious, but double meaning dialogues could have been avoided , esp Rajni's films never has such dialogues, so I was rather shocked

Prabhu was OK, so was Vineeth

Naseer & Vijaya Kumar wasted like anything.

Now coming to ladies

Malavika looked stunning
Nayanthara was OK, but my pick is Malavika Maalavika
Vadivelu's wife was pretty too

the first half of the film was a bit slow, but picked up speed during the second half, It is not a typical Thalaivar Movie, like basha or Padaiyappa, but it is a clean family entertainer and a must see movie

Saw Chandramukhi at New Jersey this weekend..with all the paraphernalia surrounding watching a Rajini film..the whistles, hoots, cheers, yells, dancing on aisles etc. etc.. the movie is different from usual Rajini films of past decade or more..its not centered on Rajini's character but since it cannot be centered on anyone else too- being a superstar movie, the importance of even chandramukhi's character has been diluted intentionally..that leaves it with no central character..but still its an interesting, fun watch, not the least because of RK himself, though he is missing in quite a number of scenes..the songs seem to go down better when watched in the movie..rajini has aged. it shows in the slow movements in the dances. He doesnt ferrociously gyrate his hips anymore (watch annanoda paatu and u will see) he walks slower, and his voice has undergone a clear change. But all f this havent taken away much at all from his immense screen presence. He does wear trendy designer clothes, carrying some of them very well and looking not as great in some others! there is the usual huge cast, a lineup of rajini regulars..nasser has tried to invest some interest into his character but almost comes off asoveracting, which is not the intention and which is never the case with the actor. others barely are worht a mention including the heroine(nayan who doesntlook half as good in the movie as in the promos and has zero charm) and Prabhu. That leaves us with chandramukhi herself- Jo manages to convincingly pull off the role and maybe becoause of the general loudness and gaudiness all around dosnt seem too overdramatic. She does a commendable job when she gets into the chandramukhi mode and is pity there are only a few scenes of those.
But, the really best part f the movie is the climax(never thought would say that abt a rajini movie:)) without giving away too much the scene where he comes as the prince gives tiny glimpses to the largely underutilized acting prowess of Rajnikanth..made me realy wonder how fabulous he could be in challenging roles..negative ones even..*sigh*.. lakalakalakalaka

that scene was only about 2 minutes, yet that is PROWESS of Superb * , he simply stole the show away in that 2 minutes, he is an actor par excellent, but highly underutilized

as raghu pointed out, its a very short scene..less than a couple of minutes and rajini steals the thunder..the whole lakalaka and the intense look,..its amazing. funnies part is, everyone at the theatre was till then yelling, clapping. laughin, generally havin fun takin it easy and suddenly, atleast for a minute there was a bit of silence..almost uneasy silence..a mild shock..)

yes yes... even here in Houston, they initially were planning to screen two shows.. but the tickets were sold out a day b4 for both the shows... they added another show to satisfy the crowd... and I swear man.. for the rajni introduction scene and the devuda devuda song i cud barely hear anything.. the crowd was enjoying like anything screaming "thalaiva", me being a part of it.. after that everybody became silent until the final 5 mins or so.. lakalakalaka.... amazing by rajni.. tht clearly shows his talent to act as an arrogant, powerful guy.. he was damn sexy as that vetttayapurathu raja.. and the crowd started again... and after the movie got over outside the theatre everybody was shouting lakalakalakalaka.. amazing!!!!!

Saw CM yesterday and iam totally disappointed.....

This is because I have seen the Malayalam original and they have made a mockery of the original classic.....

Iam sure Mohanlal, Fazil and Shobhana would have been embarrased if they had watched this movie......

I dont know why Rajini chose this subject coz it doesnt suit him at all......

There was an unecessary role for Sheela and her henchman.... I think they were added just to create a fight sequence just before the climax......

In the original movie.... Shobana would want to kill her husband as she sees her husband as the evil king....

But here she wants to kill Rajini (Vettai Raja)... The makers want to give prominence to Rajini in the tamil version...

I loved the way Rajini said Laka Laka laka laka.....

Jyothika was making monkey faces in the end and i dont know how people are appreciating this.... It was more funny than scary.....

Baba is no fantsay story, the story tells the reality of material life on earth(maya), but poor screen play, cheap graphics and political issues were the negative points which led to the film's failure.

Dear Joe, I don't know, where Rajni learned that from, nor am i interested, the concept of the story is good ie, this world is an illusion (maya) and that we live in a material world, but the film was made like a comic book, with silly politics, stupid graphics, poor screenplay and he did not convey the message correctly.

You should see his old movies before he became a superstar.....

Mullum Malarum, Johnny, Mondru Mudichu, Thillu Mullu, Ntri Kann....

I even liked Annamalai....

After Annamalai he became superstar.... and he was compelled to do these gimmicks to satisfy his fans.....

Hope he gets a good story where he can dominate and create his old magic that seems to be missing......

there are 3 categories- classic,Eropa,Gold

in Classic(ME - 6 shows - 3 tamil - 3 hindi)-ticket - 100Rs.
Except 10.30Am shows all shows were full.

in classic(CM - 5 shows)-ticket - 100Rs.
Except 7.20pm and 10.00pm shows all shows were free.

in europa(CM - 2 shows)- 2 shows were free.-ticket - 130Rs

in gold(ME - 2 shows- 1 tamil - 1 hindi) - ticket - 500Rs.
Hindi(Morning show) - free
tamil-Full.

I am not able to beleive it. I don't know who are watching the movie by paying Rs.500.

Lucky-salman movie also released in that multiplex. but only one show was full.

Even Rajini film has released after 3 years and his native, there is no enthu among bangaloreans to watch CM.

So many people returned home sadly witout tickets of ME.

Because of over crowd, ME(Tamil) is going to release in another Multiplex in bangalore from this friday(ME - hindi is already running in that multiplex).

In Trivandrum, Chandramukhi released in three screens at Athulya, Anjali and Dhanya and grossed Rs 7,11,545 in four days while Chandrolsavam in two screens Sreekumar and Kairali could manage only Rs 5,23,340 during the same period.

Chandramukhi is heavily inspired from Mohanlal�s classic Manichitrathazhu and was not expected to do well in Kerala. Surprisingly, the film has been well received and is doing better business than the three Malayalam Vishu releases.

Meanwhile Chandrolsavam is trimmed by 18 minutes to make it more racy and crisp but what the trade feels is that director Ranjit could have done this before release! Kochi Rajavu is holding on with 50 percent collections thanks to aggressive marketing campaign by Dileep&Co. But sadly Jayaram�s Alice In Wonderland, the best of the lot is floundering at box-office due to lack of publicity.

Vishu 2005 has turned out to be a nightmare for Malayalam film industry.

My take on Chandramukhi:

The core of the story is about a person who suffers from multiple personality. I was curious to see how that would be fleshed out in Indian cinema (aala vandaan etc etc), without compromising on entertainment factor and mass appeal.

I felt the first half was disjointed and a bit draggy. Rajni certainly looks his age, Nayantara- although the alleged heroine didnt have much screen time, Jyothika-come to think of it, stole the show, Prabhu- was another 'by the way', Vadivalu's comedy script was barely tolerable, Vineeth- for whatever brief moment of appearance, did his bit and made his presence felt, Sheela-a pity that she wasnt given much to do other than try and emulate the Neelaambari effect, and so was Vijaykumar. What is the point of having such heavy weights (no pun intended) like Sheela, K.R. Vijaya, Vijaykumar, Prabhu and not giving them anything to do?

I was taken aback by two things: one is the reference to Rajni being Dr Bradley's student & disciple. I've heard of poetic license, but this...?!

Second is the song "Athithom". It has an uncanny similarity to a Malayalam folk song of the following reference in coolegoose:-

I have no idea how Vidya Sagar managed that one! Try listening to the song by downloading it from coolgoose.com (malayalam section)

Another uncanny reference was to the Malayalam movie Aaraam Thampuraan, in the paattu scene where Nayantara ticks Rajni off.

Did anyone notice how when Jyothika opened the door leading to Chandramukhi's room, the camera sort of split Jyothika into two? I thought that was interesting. And also the ode to the late Shivaji Ganesan.

However, Jyothika should not have been made to look like a mad woman while playing Chandramukhi. Paithiyam & Pei arent exactly what multiple personality is all about-and I thought P. Vasu was going to be clever with this one, sigh!

I like the song Devuda-it's very Rajni, and will become a chart topper. All the other songs were average.

Last but not least, about Rajni. I feel that P. Vasu didnt do a good job with his script writing. The movie didnt have a Baasha/Padayappa/Annamalai effect. The cast was good, but the dialogue & direction was lose and disjointed and didnt do much justice in bringing out the best in Rajni.

There's only so much makeup & wardrobe can do, and it was pretty painful to see Rajni made to do youthful roles. I mean, he IS the Super Star, is it that difficult to tap into that potential to make a box office hit? And Nayantara will need some guidance in tying a sari!!!! Directors???!!!

Hi Guys,

New here, very interesting forum and a lot of hot debate going
on, I saw CM 2 days back and wanted to share some
unbiased views.

Firstly, from point of view of a general movie critic, it is a
poor movie.

Rajini does not convince a weebit as a doctor, even worse, a
psychyartist. Nothing much appreciable about this movie except
a reasonably decent perfomance by Jothika.

The movie is quite boring, if not for the last 20-25 minutes
which do create a little bit of interest to the viewers, this
movie would have surely become one more huge failure like Baba.
I dont mean to say that the climax is great, but for people
watching this movie, frustrated from the dragging boring
experience, it comes as some releif. Thats all.

Stunts are funny and under par, so is the comedy.

One particular scene made me lol, in a serious, scene, Prabhu is
going to drink poisoned coffee, Rajini, desperate to stop that, comes flying in the air to stop Prabhu sipping coffee from the cup
C'mon, this is not a stunt sequence, even in a stunt sequence
this type of a thing is not suitable, but all movies have these
flying tricks to satisfy the masses, understandable, But this
is a serious scene, this type of gimmick is
totally uncalled for. This type of small things spoil the movie even
more.

Tamil film producers should stop making these types of
movies riding on mass popularity of an actor and start giving
some good stuff for the upcoming generations. What they
are doing is not fair to the movie loving public. Too much hype
for this sorry episode.

In short, tooooo much ado about nothing.

CM is being shown by Aingharan till the 28th of April, at least 2 shows a day, while sachin is showing 1 show a day till the 28th, I don't know who is distributing or showing MX in UK, Aingaran surely knows hwo to make their money

Before I forget the story, here is my take on CM.

Saw it with great expectations but a very disappointing script. Had anybody else acted instead of Rajini as Saravanan, the film would have been a certain flop. That proves Rajini brand magic and it still works. Except Rajini, Vadivelu and Jo (second half), other characters had almost nothing to do. Songs placed here and there to satisfy the formula of six dances seem to interrupt the flow of the story. Except the climax song, all the other five served no purpose at all. Though meaningless, the songs were good to hear and visuals were okay. The choreography for 'Devuda' song was so stupid enough to show dhobis, sewage workers, barbers et al when lyrics mentioned them, similar to 70's songs. Can't they think of something better???

Bad luck to Nayantara for a poor characterization. She looked stupid frowning in one shot and happily flying kite in the next shot and frowning again next in 'Kokku para para' song. Prabhu must seriously bring down his width else stick to the role of producing movies only. P.Vasu has thought of tamil rasigans as fools to accept Prabhu as a newly married man, probably in late twenties or early thirties. He must be shot for wasting a good actor like Nasser in such a joker role.
Jo's performance, though her best in her career so far, lacked depth. She must stop stretching her eye lids wide in the name of acting. She was made to look like a 'paithiyam' in the climax.

Now for the super star, Rajini's hair dresser and costumer deserve a big applause. He looks smart in long shots but close-up shots clearly show his sagging face muscles, chin and lip-stick coated lips. He is the only saving grace of the film though his voice wasn't his usual self. Sad that he had resorted to crappy and cheap comedy this time. Vadivelu gave an able support and has more screen presence than Prabhu and Nayantara. The so-called Pei scenes were scary and could see most of the kids, including mine, closing their eyes and ears frequently. Definitely not what children expect from a Rajini movie.

Can watch just once and nothing more. The silver lining for CM is that it is released after a fiasco called Baba and that factor will make it seem much better. Rajini must exercise more prudence while choosing scripts henceforth and cannot afford to risk his image for the third time again. He should keep away from P Vasu types who just cannot assess what Rajini rasigars want and deliver. Honestly, I happened to see Sachein along with my kids after CM and Sachien looked very appealing and pleasing in contrast.

This assumption is based on the collection report. But this horse didn't inflict any loss to its owners, and the distributors and theatre owners.

On the whole, the New Year release films have began with the velocity of 'Thumbha' Rocket and had ended as Sivakasi Crackers.

Since the Jacky of the 'Sachin' is Vijay, its opening was very good indeed. But it lacks the power to make people to bet their money on it for the second time. This assumption is based on the collection report. But this horse didn't inflict any loss to its owners, and the distributors and theatre owners.

On the whole, the New Year release films have began with the velocity of 'Thumbha' Rocket and had ended as Sivakasi Crackers.

Yeah, forgot to mention 'lakalakalaka'.. Rajini did steal the show in that cameo but my daughter just did not open her eyes as Jo's make-up with an inch thick 'mai' underneath her eyes and amman-movies style big red pottu was scary in the climax.

It seems, all the three have sunk. MG amount for CM seems to be veery high. So, the film should be run (DRAGGED) for 100 + days, for the exhibitors to reap profit. Needless to say that, Producer and the distributors have benefited from it.

In a nutshell, "CM is better than Baba collection wise (period) It cannot become a Padayappa"

The Tamil New Year saw three big releases -- Rajnikanth's Chandramukhi, Kamal Haasan's Mumbai Xpress and Vijay's Sachein.

While it may seem that the films of these superstars have done well at the box-office, the truth is otherwise.

Special: Tamil releases this New Year

"The most talked-about film Chandramukhi has made profits for the production house and distributors, but not for the theatre owners. They are going to lose a lot of money as the minimum guarantee paid by them to the distributors is very high," says Ramanujam, editor of the Tamil Nadu Entertainment Film Trade magazine. "Unless this film runs for 100-200 days, they will not be able to recover this huge amount."

According to Ramanujam, if the film was bought by theatre owners at a lower price, they would have recovered the money. For example, the minimum guarantee paid by theatres in Chennai was Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million). As per the collections in the first week where the ticket rates were raised to Rs 200 and Rs 300, the film has to run for a minimum of 150 days for them to make a profit, which, according to Ramanujam, is unlikely.

"Tickets are available over the counter in many theatres on week-days. How are they going to run such a film for 100 days?" he asks.

Kalimuthu, who collects box-office data from Chennai and Chengalpet, says, "Of the three films, Chandramukhi is doing better. It's faring better than Baba at the box-office, but not much else. Doesn't that say it all? Only ladies seem to like Chandramukhi but they will never form a repeat audience. In villages, theatres are only half full. Only urban audiences seem to appreciate Sachein, while Mumbai Xpress is a complete flop."

Karthik, an agent, also describes the three films as failures in Trichy. He claims Chandramukhi has collected more money (Rs 6 lakh from two theatres in a week) than the other two, simply because the ticket rates were hiked up in the first week.

"But theatres cannot do so now as after four days, they were only 40-50 percent full. Collections of Sachein can be termed okay, while Mumbai Xpress is well below average," he says.

Senthil, an agent in Madurai, says none of three Tamil New Year releases will pass muster. "Though Chandramukhi is faring better, it is not up to the scale expected of a Rajni film. Yes, it's better than Baba but it can never be a Padayappa. The problem is, in Madurai and the nearby small towns, you see half empty theatres because ladies seem to like the film more. But you can never depend on women to bolster collections."

According to him, in Madurai, while Sachein is doing average business, Mumbai Xpress is likely to be taken off screens after a week. "Nobody seemed to like the film."

While the makers of Sachein and Mumbai Xpress are not making any claims, the makers of Chandramukhi are going out of their way to create an impression that the Rajnikanth film is a hit.

"How can you call a film from which the theatre owners cannot recover the minimum guarantee paid a hit? In the B and C centers, losses are running as high as 20-40 percent," says Ramanujam

Now seeing this, the revised ranking seems to be CM, SC & MX.

One more result, guys,

A colleague of mine is a resident of vellore. CM got released in 2 theatres there. He had gone to see the film on saturday (16th - 3rd day) evening show & found that the theatre was 1/2 empty (kamal fans will like this) or 1/2 full (rajini fans would prefer this).

So, seems like all the 3 films have bombed.

It is an accepted fact that Rajini's character was tweaked a lot from the original Mallu movie but I guess Jo's character is an exact replica. Can any of you who have seen Manichitrathazhu or Apthamitra compare Jo's performance with that of Shobana or Soundarya?? How did the other two veteran actresses perform the 'possessed' role? Did they look as 'mentals' in the climax or has Vasu made Jo to look like a joker??

Chennai weekend box-office (April 22-24)

Chandramukhi has created history at the Chennai box-office! The film has taken 100 percent collections in its second weekend. In 11 days the film has netted Rs 84 Lakhs from eight Chennai screens, which means a distributors share of approximately Rs 55 Lakhs.

Sachein has not been able to hold on to its 92 percent first week opening and has fallen badly. Mumbai Xpress has derailed all over Tamil Nadu. Even at Sathyam Cinemas, where all Kamal films take bumper opening, collections are dropping day by day. Lucky continues with 50 percent collections and the new entrant this week is Hitch at number five.

Just a few days before, we have mentioned in this same column that, one does not know how and when the tickets of 'Chandramuki' are being sold. Some of the readers of Cinesouth have joined with us in our effort to track down about what is happening. Here is some interesting scenes for the readers..

The place Chennai, Shanthi Theatre, Night show was just over, and the people have gone back to their places. The place was deserted. The whole city is sleeping. But suddenly there were people started arriving, in single and in pairs. With in 3 'O' clock, in the early morning Shanthi Theatre was filled up with crowd.

At exactly 4.30 A.M., the temple doors were opened. (Some people may call them as ticket counter, but for Rajii fans, they are temple doors only) with in just 30 minutes, the tickets for all three shows of that particular day was sold out.

The whole crowd was in cheerful mood throughout. The 'Operator Booking' was executed with police protection. Why this farce is being enacted when the whole city is sleeping? A theatre worker explains the 'reason'. "We could not control the crowd during the daytime that is why, we are doing this midnight reservation".

This incident has been brought to our notice, (along with photos) by the reader of Cinesouth, 'Sundar'. He is also a fan of Rajini.

Not much of guessing seems to be needed this time around. It is Rajnikant's Chandramukhi among the Tamil New Year releases.

The film, which has given a new lease of life to the actor on silver screen after the Baba disaster, has gone ahead of Kamal Haasan's Mumbai Xpress and Vijay's Sachien in the box-office collections.

The movie is running to full houses wherever it is being screened, notwithstanding the industry's nemesis ? pirated VCDs ? surfacing in the market.

Say excited Rajni's fans, 'a festive atmosphere now prevails in theatres screening the film. The theatres are literally rocking'. Theatre-owners endorse their claim. They say family crowds are now back to theatres.

According to Ramasamy, a distributor, the movie has so far captured over 80 per cent market share. The viewership, he says, is expected to increase with the summer vacation already on. The upswing is expected to continue until Vikram's Anniyan gets released as scheduled next month. Not just the producers, but the distributors and even the exhibitors have made good profits through Chandramukhi'.

Kamal's Mumbai Xpress is also doing well, coming a close second. A hilarious entertainer with Kamal at his best has been drawing good crowds especially among the city audience. The distributors are optimistic that Mumbai Xpress will help them make 'some profit'.

Vijay's Sachien, though had a fabulous opening, is struggling to sustain the crowd. When compared to Vijay's earlier blockbuster Ghilli or Thirupachi, Sachien has been a dismal show so far.

Asked what could be the reason behind Chandramukhi doing such good business, Pushpa Kandasamy of K Balachander's production house Kavithalaya says, 'it is not just the Rajni factor. The film has a different story line and subtle heroism. It has helped the movie gain such a phenomenal opening'.

The fact that Rajnikant appeared on screen after almost two years also raised expectations. 'It is a rare combination of good music and excellent performance by the artistes'.

Actor-director S J Suryah gives the entire credit for Chandramukhi's success to Rajnikant. 'It is all because of his dedication. He involved himself in all departments of the movie to ensure its success. He lived up to expectations unlike in Baba'.

A distributor-turned-producer-turned-director Keyar says, ' since the movie has every element in it to please youth, children and women alike, it has been drawing unprecedented crowds. Initially, the distributors and theatre-owners had apprehensions. But it has turned out to be a money-spinner'.

Alright, saw CM yesterday and here is my thoughts/review on the movie!

Pluses
- Seeing Rajinikanth on the screen after a long gap is nostalgic.
- No hero worship/pooja done for Rajini except for the intro scene/fight
- No "punch" (a.k.a comedy) dialogues from Rajini.
- Rajini/Vadivelu comedy in first half.
- good performance (if not great) from Jyothika.
- good to see a kind of mythological movie in Tamil after a long gap (eventhough lifted from some other source)

Minuses
- Second half which didn't focus too much on the "central" character of chandramukhi!
- What is Nayantara doing in the movie? How dis she fell in love with Saravanan within a blink of a eye? Her character is not well-etched out & is probably the weakest link in the movie.
- Nasser just overacts and his character was more annoying and "Clownish" to watch. Perhaps Nassers worst movie in is career!
-Rajini too slow enough in his movements especialy in the song sequnces he is completely off-guard!

Final Verdict: Not a great movie but still watchable enough once. Rajini starved fans would lap it up!

agreed, one question though, have u seen CM, if so, what is your UNBIASED view(being a hard core kamal fan) of the film, I have not yet seen MX, hence I can not comment upon that?

I'm not in India at the moment, so, I watched both somehow (dont ask me how )

CM : I liked the movie thought it dragged before interval. It's unusual to see Rajni in this kind of a underplaying role after a long time. This definitely marks a new trend for Rajni films. He should stick to this kind of role (of his age) without any compromises like punch dialogues and build-ups in his future films too.

I don't know how many Rajni fans noted the abbreviation of this film. It indirectly refers to Chief Minister!!. But now people are not looking at him in that perspective, the hidden CM was not quite obvious. Had it been, then it would have got additional publicity for the film.

MX: I liked the film thoroughly. Everybody said abt. the dragging episode in the second half, I didn't quite feel it. It was a thorough entertainment for me. It's just an additional feather in Kamal's cap.

For me, CM is good, MX is better, not the best.
