After Kamal it's Ajith Who's been a good person off-screen and also in the on-scree Ajith is doing different in all the films.

I have been emphasizing in all my posts only vikram from sethu till pithamagan has shown himself to be anywhere close to kamal(no one will match kamal).

Ajith/vijay does not have either talent nor their approach to become great. They r just in line to do hardcore commercial movies to make money.

Unfortunately, both Ajit and Vijay are doing a dis-service to themselves and Tamil films in general. I also read in an interview with Nasser who related an incident with Ajith which left a bad taste in Nasser's mouth. Ajith had given an OK to Nasser to act in the latter's film (Maayan). In the 11th hour,Ajith pulled out, which left Nasser in the lurch. Ajith's reason was that his friends had advised homnot to act in such films because Ajith had reached star status.

Nasser had no other choice but to severely cut down the budget of the film and he took the main role himself.

Wow, I mean I knew Ajith was arrogant here and there, but Nasser must have been really hurt/angry to have blurted his name out like that to the HINDU! However, Ajith has a habit of frequently changing his mind, so it doesn't surprise me. Akilan, I don't get what you're trying to say. Are you saying it's better to cheat someone than act in a bad movie? I'd prefer acting in a bad film.

K.S.Ravikumar was shocked which is why he decided to make "Godfather" with Ajith and release as a challenge to the superstar's film. Look Ajith made a mistake which clearly hurt Nasser, and he has blurted it out in the Hindu. That's not good news for Ajith, but whatever it's in the past. Hope he doesn't "change his mind" frequently in the future.

Bottom Line is that Ajith cannot act in macho roles! He's only good for movies like Poovellam Un Vasam, etc. He can do macho roles, but he needs to know how to do them. That's one thing that he can learn from Surya. There is no chance in the universe that he will become the nxt Kamal if he keeps this up. Looks like Surya, Vikram or even Simbhu might be the talented actors in the future.

Anyone seen Manmadhan? Simbhu's acting, screenplay, story, direction, dialougs were very impressive. The little guy is talented. Much more than most heros in the Industry.

To be compared to kamal, or just to come close to kamal, one have to prove that he can ACT ! And not that he can jump and fight ! u know Ajith has the Talents to become Kamal but his movies are almost like Masala and sometime giving Performance-Orinted movies and he does that as a Simple matter. he also doen't need a Bala or Sethu. for Vikram he acted in a purely performance orietned role so it' easy to say he's good. in pithamagan he looked like an animal but never react or never has to act in different scenes but just an animal. and he needs a Bala

Kamal had given class movies like 'Moontraam Pirai' and 'salangai Oli' when he was just around the age of 30.Comparing kamal,the legend with actors like Ajith is horrible.

That too ,if you compare with Vikram,atleast it is tolerable,because he has proved in some movies like sethu,pithamagan.

But,Ajith..oh!my GOD..His dialogue deliver is the worst so far from any tamil actor.

One more thing,playing different getups doesn't make an actor great peformer..We can appreciate that for his courage ..But the appreciation must be based on how is the peformance for those GETups ..Just doing 9 different makeups (with no expression and difference in body language) don't make him navarathiri 'sivaji' ..

Both kamal and ajith are fair skined .that is the only similarity ..other than that Ajith has nothing achived to look for kamal's place ..if it at you want to identify somebody have a chance to become next kamal,so far Vikram is the only one showed something close to it.

Personally, I felt that Ajit had good hopes during the days of Kaadhal Kottai, Vaali (his best so far?), Amarkkalam.
His waterloo was Citizen. Since then, he has been on a downslide. Getting bloated, only added to his miseries. Obviously marriage didnt help him.

Vikram is altogether of different material. He really takes his work seriously and does a lot of homework, before attempting a character. The question is, will he sustain.

Surya is a person we need to watch out for. His performances have been interesting, to say the least.

After Manmadhan, will Simbhu shine?

Who wil be the heir apparent of Kamal?
Only time can tell.

I think Vikram can suatain..I beleive he has a mentality like kamal 'learn and improve'..There are some actors who are already more than 10 years in the field..but no improvement even in expressions (Best eg is Prashant,,he can't even express like a new comer Danush)

Ajith is next ..As you said,after Vaali ,he did even try to correct his minus,but he added some more...In the name of accepting new getups,he is irritating with his THATHA getups.that too when he says "Athuu",I really laughed at movie hall,unintensionally.

Though I am not vijay admirer,atleast he has more plus points (dance,voice modulation,dialogue delivery etc),but I don't see anything like that with Ajith ,other than the hypes like this comparing him with kamal.

What do you think?Curious..Who are your favourite actors?

Joe, I have no doubts to Vikram's abilities. Only wondering whether he will remain in the field (which has a lot to do with luck factor.) Arul was his only release last year.
Prashanth and the likes of him are not in the league at all.

As for Ajit and Vijay, both of them have their minuses. Vijay is hopeless with sorrow, while Ajit cannot do comedy. To me, these two emotions are very important in determining the acting prowess of an actor. And as I mentioned in my earlier post, Ajit had his chance but blew it. Vijay never had his chance. If he fills up somebody's shoes, it will be like those not known for acting capabilities like MGR and Rajini.

I have passed the age of adulation Joe; I dont have any more favourites. I used to hate Simbhu but saw some thing in him in Manmadhan. Similarly, I cant stand the sight of Dhanush for now. Who knows what the future will be.

What I can say for sure is that none of the present crop pf actors have the stage presense of the giants of Tamil cinemadom of the past like MGR, Sivaji, Kamal, Rajini.
And that is, sad.

As you said Ajith definitely had his chance. Apart from Kaathal KOttai, vaali, amarkalam he was good in Kaathal Mannan too ( Charan's first movie as a Director). Even in Citizen - he did - some what a good job in the flash back scenes as a fisherman in Athipatti. He totally changed his track after the success of Amarkalam and started chosing more action oriented stories. His passion for car racing and a bit of over confidence are the additional contributing factors of his failure in the box office.

I'm confident that he has the talents of performing well in weighty roles like in Vaali ( his eye movements are commendable ) but it all depends on how he choses his stories. I'm sure directors like Bala, Linguswamy, Selva Ragavan, Dharani et al wouldn't have considered making films with Ajith if he had not got the required talents as some people claim.

Another plus point is, irrespective of his continuous failures in the box office - he had managed to establish a strong fan base which actors like Vikram, Surya and Madavan are yet to establish.

I think we all have prejudices..As you have with Chimbu..I also hate to watch Prashant,Chimbu..I don't know why.

Also,some actress highly rated by most,I found very average,whereas some rejected by most,I found reasonable..Example I don't like Trisha,Laila,sonia agarwal much...I feel like many other less succesful heroins are more beautiful and talented.

Agree,Ajith did well..But did he improve?Even in latest movie Attagasan,one character is Tuticorin Thatha..no local language modulation or effort ..Just adding 'le' will not make tutucorin accent .That is why kamal is legend..If kamal is in this place..he will learn and try his level best to speak like real tutucorin guy..Even the guy Bharath in 'kaadal' did excellent with madurai accent,though he is from chennai.

Though I am impressed with him personally,for his openness in interviews..it is nothing to do with his acting talents.

You said you have no more favourites..So it means ,you did have before..he he.

Btw,I don't think Rajini is known as actor with less acting capabilities..He is very good actor too.Though he is known as action hero,he was simply outstanding in mullum malarum,thillu mullu etc..

Roshan, it was in Citizen with its ridiculous story-line, that I lost respect for Ajit. Serious actors will never take on a role that is an insult to sane people. Anyway, you are right. He did pretty well as the fisherman.

Thanks for reminding about Madhavan - an actor par excellence. His attempt in Aayutha Ezhuthu convinced me that he has some good stuff.

Joe, I used to hate Simbu for his cheapness and the way he treated women with contempt in his earlier movies. Prashanth is just wooden.

Yes I agree with you on the ladies you have mentioned - none of those you have mentioned impress me. Anyway women's roles in Tamil movies have been reduced to just window dressing, that the days of Revathy and Radhika are long gone.

As for Rajini, I dont think he will be remembered for his acting skills, just like our dear MGR. But that does not mean they are any less of icons of the industry.

Yes, my favourites had been Sivaji and Kamalahasan. I have even secretly confessed to close friends that Kamal has even exceeded Sivaji is some roles. oops!
But while Sivaji was a pakka gentleman both in and out of cinema circuit, the less said about Kamal, the better.

You are right! Because I like thalai I'll only talk about thalai. Thalai is now acting in good movie and in good directors so I think he can get into the place where he was and he is brave to take any risks.

Vikram had acted in big directors so it' easy to give a hit and bala helped him a lot. I also doubt about vikram after anniyan. If anniyan fails then there's no vikram.

And for surya because he's not married he can do anything now and some girls will like but after that he will struggle.

For simbhu he can shine because he is brave to do anything and he can direct movies so he can be what he wants to be

Ajith is acting better than vijay and dancing doesn't mean much to an actor. You know after citizen thalai had a big conversation at his home to discuss about what he did wrong in citizen. He's improving. Ajith's dialougue delivery is the best in the generation. Voice is great as anyone and of course better than rajini.

Vijay too said "ye ye' in his movie and I did laugh at vijay.

Ajith had it but he blew it because he wanted to be an action star and went for car racing but he's now back as determined as ever and he's now signing good movies and choosing good directors. Ajith is determined and he'll do what he wants because when vaali was under construction he was hurt and said he cannot walk anymore but then he felt ok then doctors told him not to walk immediately but he started walking immideately. And a film before that, 3 days after an operation he came to shooting and shot fightings scenes. So I have confident in him.

But vikram may decline too

Ajith can and will improve because in attagasam he did a great job. But the accent is something new he's trying. But in citizen he was awesome. Ok now did any young actors try that one?

Ajith did not have to do much in Citizen except in the court and the flashback scenes. He has a ready made attire or mask for him throughout the whole movie. That is why the critics panned his acting, saying that he should have chosen a role more natural. In the court scene, yes he was great, despite the dialogue delivery. So, in Citizen Ajith only managed to shine in the court room and flashback scenes.

Also, I feel AJith has to step up the pace a little to reach where his contemporaries, Vikram, Vijay, and Surya are. Acting or no acting, these three are beating Ajith. Ji looks encouraging because it has Ajith in a stable role, fighting for injustice, which he's done successfully numerous times. (Thankfully, he's not a dada or anything.)

If Ajith wants to prove himself, he needs to really step out; something Dr Sivaji, Kamal and Rajini have done previously. He needs to take roles other than the rebellious, angry, dashing rogue hero.

He needs to play full-on villians (without fear of losing his popularity and "star" status). I thought he did a brave thing by taking on a villianous role in Sharukh Khan's Asoka. After that, I don't know what happened.

As Joe suggested, doing 9 roles doesn't make you a Sivaji. His dialogue delivery is indifferent, almost without passion.

I'm pretty sure there's a good actor buried underneath all that perceived super-stardom.

If Ajith wants to prove himself, he needs to really step out; something Dr Sivaji, Kamal and Rajini have done previously. He needs to take roles other than the rebellious, angry, dashing rogue hero.

I dont think we can blame him for the current roles he is taking. It is all with keeping with the times.

If you look at trends of the recent past:

1. There were a continuous stream of Love stories - paaththu kaadhal, paakkama kaadhal, kaadhal illaama kaadhal, kural mele kaadhal, kanavula kaadhal.
Producers were looking for a winning formula. Ppl like Maniratnam was also affected - alai paayuthe comes to mind.

2. Then Thulluvatho Ilamai clicked, and resulted in a stream of sex themed movies.

3. Next was some gangster movie. Dhill? Immediately a whole lot of movies on dada activities were produced. All actors jumped into the banwagon - Ajit, Vijay, Surya, Madhavan, Simbhu, Srikanth, Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Sarathkumar, etc etc. Mani also produced Aayutha Ezhuththu.

4. Now the theme seem to be maniacs - after the success of Kaadhal Konden? From Chellame to Kadhal, movies have begun to be churned out on the same theme. Wait to see all actors getting into the same act.

However, there seems to be one sole actor who has not got into this vicious cycle. One who dares to be different..............

Yes Madhvan has definitely got some stuff. He first proved himself in Anbe Sivam and then in Aytha Ezhuthu. Thanks to Kamal Hassan for bringing out some extra ordinary perfomance of Madhavan. Out of the present lot, I would point only at Surya when it comes to versatility. Vikram is yet to prove his acting talents sans get up changes. Except a few action movies (Dhil and Gemini) all his other movies done without get up changes have bombed in the box office - and had not made any impact either. eg: King, Kaadal Sadugudu, A film with Devayani, directed by her husband(cant remember the name), Saamuarai, and the latest Arul.

And finally, I would say, It's better if we analyse these actors' performance comparing them with the present (generation) lot and not by comparing with a LEGEND called Kamal Hassan.

I have to agree with you to a certain degree, NOV, on the movie trends and how people jump on the bandwagon. But even among those who do, some stand out and make real good movies and perform really well. Yes, Mani did do Ayutha E. But he took it seriously: and some stellar performances from the likes of Madhavan, Surya, etc, made this a good film. (On the subject of Madhavan, he is an example of someone stepping out of his comfort zone. He's shed his 'pretty boy' romantic hero stereotype and has taken on challenging roles. I use to scoff at Madhavan when he first came on the scene. It's only in the last few years that I've gained respect for him as an actor).

On the other hand, Ajith and Vijay as well, have pretty much kept to what they are comfortable with. On top of that, they use their movies to take swipes at each other.

I hope that some good producer/writer/director does something good with Ajith. Or he himself should take the initaitive to do something different.

Joe, I was pretty impressed with Surya in Pithamaghan, Nandha and Ayutha E. I haven't seen Kaaka Kaaka yet but heard he's done a good job. I suppose what I DON'T se in him is the desire to become a 'star'. In his perofrmances, he seems to know when to hold back and not over do it. One great scene in Nandha is when he realises he's been poisonedby his own mother. His face changes from pain, to horror, to acceptance, all in a smooth flow.

I haven't seen Peralaghan myself.

Ajith and Vikram stands out to be the first ones to become a Force and surya stands out next.

Ajith's dialogues delivery is Great( I think someone who don't know anything said that' his is not good so others are following it.) Ajith is capable of doing Action, Romantic and Off Beat Roles. Surya- surya is now trying something different. he's good not the best. he lacks body language and dialogue delivery. surya repeat the same in some of his movies. in ayuda eluthu his acting repeats the one is Kaaka Kaaka. in peralagan, his acting was almost good but he shold have changed his voice. it's was like he was delibratly changing his voice.

I am sorry that I will have to disagree with your conclusion. Kamal has a history of downplaying his companions in his movies. If Madhavan shone, it was inspite of Kamal and not becos of him.

Poor Prabhu who was reduced to non-entity sidekick in Vasoolraja MBBS.
Dhanush was smart enough to turn down the offer to act with Kamal in the same move.

Again, I beg to differ. When we think smart ppl, we immediately think of Einstein. Similarly when it comes to good acting, the benchmark are ppl who have made a name for themselves in that field. So, when someone is compared to Kamal, Kamal is already raised to the level of benchmarking, which is of course a recognition.

Also, I wont call Kamal a legend, as I want him to continue acting.

Nov,Nagesh and Adul kulkarni(?) won National award for best supporting actor for Nammavar and Heyram respectively.

Even Nadigar thilagam got special jury award for Devar magan.

Though some says Arjun's character is less important in Kuruthipunal,which I don't agree..The weightage of the character is not based on how many scenes it appears..but how powerful and important..Arjun's character in Kurithipunal is very powerful character,ofcourse he done it with excellence...Not to mention Madavan in Anbe sivam.

For me,it is not reasonable to blame Kamal in this issue.

NOV, Kumar, and Joe,

Saw 'Ji' on Saturday. Though there are mixed opinons about the film, I have to say that I liked it and I enjoyed it. Lingusamy had handled the subject well - especially the second half. I couldn't help comparing the second half with 'Aytha Ezhuthu' but I have to say that Lingu has done a better job than Maniratnam when dealing with the subject of 'Student Politics'.

Good screen play (but needs a bit of trimming), good perfomanace by Ajith, Vijayakumar ( very natural in his performance), the guys who play the role of Ajith's friends (specially Venkat Prabhu) , Saranraj and all the others including the minor artistes except for the one called Trisha.

Except for her beatiful smile and one or two love scenes there's nothing much she could do. She is totally out in emotional scenes and dance sequences -though herself and Ajith make a good on screen pair.

Songs are like speed breakers, spoiling the flow of the story - specially kiLiyE kiLiyE and thiruttu rascal. Could have avoided those two . 'ding dong kOyil maNi' has been picturised beautifully - different from the usual ones.

Lingusamy has paid attention to minute details and that proves his dedication and hard work. Dialogues are simple but realistic and meaningful ( thanks for not adding any punch dialogues and unnecessary hero build ups). Director has very well handled Ajith by exploiting his strengths and carefully avoiding his weaknesses. There's lot of improvements in Ajith's body language and eye movements and he definitely has a screen presence.

It is said that almost the entire film has been shot out door in Kumbakonam . That adds more weight and 'yathaarthan' to the story. Not having a separate comedy track, avoiding unbelievable stunt sequences , car chasings, bombings and firings, and un realistic love scenes ( love scenes are handled beautifully and decently) are pluses to the film.

Overall it is a good, entertaining, above average movie. A good one from Ajith probably after Mugavari. Hope he improves more on his good form that he has re gained.

I saw the movie yesterday in PVR with my parents.
After a long time, a movie of a hero that one can watch with entire family. No vulgarity or item number at all in this movie. No double meaning dialogues and no stupid comedy track. It shows how the belief director has in the script and the actors. Roshan's review is the same way I saw the movie to be too. Only drawback is that in the second half atleast three times one felt that the climax is around the corner. Maybe this could have been avoided. Also Rajesh's character as ajith's uncle has been left dangling and that could have been completed. Trisha's character for a change has been well developed. The last scene is one of the more poignant scenes for a masala entertainer. As Roshan has put all the supporting characters play their part really well and they do a lot of activity, unlike in usual movies, where hero gets to do everything. Special mention for the actor who plays charanraj's son,Visu, Vinod Kumar, Venkat Prabhu(very funny) and Ajith's other friends. Vidhyasagar's music is nothing much to write about and some traces of Lord of the Rings background music showing march of mordor's evil army can be heard when MLA's auto army is marching across Kumbakonam. Watch out for Ajith's acting in the second half after the cycle shop/party office is burnt by MLA's son. All in all a good movie which could have been better with more trimming in the second half.

I missed to mention about the climax scene. Yes it is poignant and a weighty one for a masala entertainer. Though the ending is predictable it has been handled in an un predictable way !!

I should also mention the police officer character ( who is he? ). Looks a bit lke Raguman and does a neat job.

As for the supporting characters - even that drunkard old man who appears in just 3 short scenes had done his part well. "enbathi aiyaayirathi onnu ! " was a real cracker ! . Also the small fellow who assists mani vannan in his cycle repair shop - good selection

Trisha putting in a rose inside the ballet box was 'kavithai' !

I read reports some time back that when Aaudha Ezuthu was released, 'Ji' had to be tailored because of similarity between both the scripts. If there was any tailoring , i could not see any effects on the screen. One more thing worth mentioning was the dialogues. All dialogues are very good. When charanraj is pissed of at a group of people and his sidekick reminds him that they are his regular voters, he says "Vote, indha vote mattum illainna ivangalaiyellaam suttu saambalakki iruppaen!" It reminded me the power of democracy which has so far prevented politicians from finishing us off and why are people illiterate and feeble still go out to vote on election day.

Kamal is a great actor. Its even ridiculous to even compare Kamal with any current actor. Resume of no current actor can hold candle to him.Screaming fans will not alter facts.

From Mid 70s till Early 90s we had really great era with good directors (KB,ManiRathnam,Bharathiraaja,Balu Mahendra,Singeetham Sreenivas Rao) good story telling , illayaraa's music etc. Kamal as an actor took the movies to another level.

The current generation of actors lack most of the above so they have to do with the best they have.
