Kamal Haasan overjoyed with Dasavathaaram
By Khabrein.info Correspondent, Hyderabad, June 18: Kamal Haasan is overjoyed over the response that Dasavathaaram, his latest film is getting. The film portrays the legendary actor in 10 different roles and he says that he rates this film as his best. The overwhelming response was almost assured for the film as the halls showing the films were overbooked for at least a week in advance. The sort of hype that was created around the new film of Haasan before its launch had made all the Haasan fans very eager to see him in 10 different roles. And to be true the film is a lot better than the expectations and doing exceedingly well at the box office. Kamal Haasan is over cloud nine due to the response. He says, “I have normally only heard people say that the movie is nice. But here every man has said he will see it a second time. That is something I have never heard in my career. That's when I wish I was both the actor and the distributor”. The film’s success can be gauged by the fact that in several places in Andhra Pradesh police had to be called in to control the crown outside cinema halls. |

According to Kamal, the best compliment he has received so far was from his guru K. Balachander. Rajinikanth too, expressed his desire to see the film again, informed Kamal. |

I know..but I am asking generally.. because.. the characters like muslim, japanese, bush, old age lady.. see these characters are not able to create any impact on audience... But characters like balaram, poovaraghan created interest because of kamals identity.. villan too in the list but he escapes because of the length of the role.. |

Last Friday after returning from Pune to chennai at 9:00 PM, and after knowing in Mayajaal the last show was schedule at midnight 12:30 AM, i decided to check for the tickets directly. Reached theater at 10 PM and of course all the shows were houseful. There are several others were kept on coming checking for the ticketes with their families. Could be more around 150 which definitely fits one more show. The counter guy was totally helpless. The general crowd was even asking for midnight show after 1 AM ![]() ![]() |

Dasavatharam - US box-office
By Moviebuzz | Friday, 20 June , 2008, 11:16 Dasavatharam was released in USA with a big bang of 42 prints. This was unprecedented in US movie history for south Indian films. With print sharing facility, the film was screened in 50 cities across the country. Says Jayavel Murugan: “I am happy to be associated with this once-in-a-lifetime project called Dasavatharam and would like to thank Aascar films and Padmashree Kamal Hassan for giving me this opportunity. The film has approximately grossed $ 500,000 in its first three days.” Murugan made it clear that the movie has “surpassed all box office collection records of any south Indian movie released in US history”. ![]() The advance bookings for second week screening in all cities are brisk and though the film was panned by critics, it looks like people are interested to see the 10 roles that Kamal Hassan has done in the film. ![]() UK Box office Dasavatharam has debuted at No. 12 in the UK box-office for the week June 13 to 15. In its opening weekend, the film has collected £ 1,26,747 [approx. Rs. 1.07 crores] from 19 screens. The film is an average grosser. Remember Sivaji debuted at No.8 in UK top ten? - ![]() ![]() |

I saw this in person and this movie is a clear winner. Reviews later but one question keeps surfacing in my mind: Given there are 10 characters.. Each character alone will come for 160/10 min ~15 min.. Did the critics seriusly think that each and every character must have a solid story.. I belive one must look at the end product which was pretty good to me. |

Actually the theater used to be good. After funasia took over the management it has become pathetic. Often there will be no sync between the voice and the picture, sometimes the picture on the screen would turn upside down!! BWC6 is a better theater and the sound system there is infinitely better than WB. Have fun watching it |

I would rather buy this explanation instead of no explanation at all. At the end of the movie I was disappointed that nambi scenes werent related at all, but now I knw its not the case ![]() ![]() By the way, this is what I read about the tsunami and find the exp to be convincing. The 2004 tsunami was caused by sudden release of strain energy of two tectonic plates pushing against each other, accumulated over centuries. So instead of sliding smoothly over each other, the plates actually shuddered. Its like the shudder you experience when you drag something heavy over a rough floor. Perhaps the statue could have been the blockage stopping the tectonic plates from sliding smoothly. Perhaps it was too small to make such an impact? This is where Butterfly effect kicks in. As the popular explanation goes, a flap of butterfly wing could be the cause of a tornado. It doesnt mean that butterfly' flap possesses that much energy. It means that butterfly's flap could possibly result in series of trivial events, whose effects gets cascaded to result in a tornado and the tornado wouldnt have happened had the butterfly not flapped its wings. Likewise, the statue may be too insignificant, but its submersion could be a crucial peg in a series of events that lead to the build up of strain energy and eventually resulted in tsunami. Highly improbable, but not impossible. Butterfly effect says that even a small change in initial conditions may cascade to result in a bigger aftermath over a period of time. and ofcourse the end result is chaos theory. A mathematical example of butterfly effect But please dont ask me whether the chola boats reached as far as java sumatra (where teh actual fault line is I beleive ![]() ![]() |

At last DASAVATHARAM makes it to the ROTTENTOMATOES wesbite, which features the harshest and most erudite of critics in the US today!
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dasavatharam/ http://www.laweekly.com/film+tv/film-reviews/film-reviews-get-smart-guy-maddins-my-winnipeg/19123/?page=1 DASAVATHARAM Famed for his multiple roles (quadruplets in Michael Madhana Kamarajan) and Lon Chaneyesque physical transformations (a dwarf in Aproova Sagodharargal), “Universal Hero” Kamal Hassan pulls out all the stops for this uneven but hugely ambitious Kollywood blockbuster, the most expensive Tamil production of the year. Here Hassan appears as no less than 10 characters in a self-penned, head-spinning screenplay that begins with 13th-century religious persecution and ends amid the Asian tsunami of 2004. The disparate threads are tied together by a treatise on the interconnectedness of things and the mysterious ways in which God may (or may not) work. In between there is no shortage of violent action, wacky comedy and, of course, musical numbers — a three-hour head rush of cinematic delirium that couldn’t have been made anywhere else in the world. All over the map and not always in the best of taste, the picture falls short of its state-of-the-art ambitions, but the rickety CGI and mostly so-so musical numbers (the opener is, however, spectacular) are countered by exuberant pacing and Hassan’s go-for-broke efforts. His shifting body language delights in roles as diverse as elderly Indian grandmother, Japanese karate master and, yes, George W. Bush, despite unconvincing, rubbery makeup. But it’s as a bumbling, Telugu-speaking intelligence officer that Hassan effectively steals the movie from himself, a surreal achievement appropriate to the lunacy on display. (Culver Plaza) (Joey O’Bryan) I find the review overall positive and very appropriate! guys, this is how movies are reviewed - impersonal, straightforward and honest - not the contrived, self-righteous manner in which pals like Khaled Mohammed and Raja Sen review! does anyone know if the special screening for the UN delegates and also the US media ppl actually happened or not? |

There are genuine critics ..But most of the critics trying to prove they are intelligent by saying this is usual masala movie . * No duet song, love sequence * No amma, appa ,akka ,thangachi ,annan ,thampi sentiments * No punch dialogues I can list many ..there are so many NOs for a typical tamil masala film ..This is not a class movie ,but not a usual masala movie either . And when kamal gives mahanathi they ask for micheal mathana kamarajan ..when kamal gives dasavatharam ,they ask for mahanathi ..That shows they are not critics ,just vayitherichal parties. |

Any kamal fan would take a strong exception of what you have alluded in your last sentence. |
Quote: |
However I like the way you have used the word 'preference'. Critics - genuine ones - the poor things have no choice - no preference offered to them. They view cinema objectively (thats how they should) and say what they found it and how they found it set against artistic bench mark. |
Quote: |
In this case the natural temptation would be to place Dasa against a 'commercial entertainer with intelligence' bench mark of Kamal movies - which is Aboorva Sagodharargal and if you place it there, Appu dwarfs any other character in dasa and if you observe - even Balram Naidu is a mere continuation of Janakaraj's inspector character. |
Quote: |
As far as bardwaj rangan's reference to MX, he says that MX though perceived to be a weak work from Kamal in recent times had a lot of things in script and charecterisation - I tend to agree - most don't - However calling MX a trash and dasa an epic is again a slanted view - no matter how popular it might be |

jaiganes,
I have clearly mentioned the difference between MX & 10A in my last sentence. I am sure MOST of the kamal fans will agree with me. Devar Magan had already agreed. If kamal fans are jaiganes and Rangan only in this world, then I think what you have said might be true. Again, both are two different worlds.
At the end of the day, he is also a movie fan. Right ? How a critic can rate MX against 10A. MX was perceived as poor work from Kamal. Hence, he wrote a review ? OTOH, 10A is considered as the BEST. Hence, he didn't write a review ? Enna logic ithu ? I took that as statements based on "his own" objectives and benchmarks (Preference and priority) ? For me, the preference and priority here is not much different from a normal movie fan. Just that his priority differs from others. But does that make 10A - a trash ? No way. MX being a comedy movie had less things to offer. enakku neraya scene la sirippae varala.. OTOH, I got more than what I imagined from 10A. As an entertainer, it had kamal's complex script narrated in a simple way. The one that most of the people love to see. I don't think it can make a film trash. I am not saying the film has no flaws. But I don't see why a person should go and see Aaalvanthaan, mumbai express etc after seeeing 10A.
I beg to differ. I don't think so. Both are comedians and cops. Apart from that, I don't see any similarity
First of all, a movie should have something. I don't have much knowledge to dig deep into the characters, script, blahblah to analyse a film on its intricacies. Generally, I won't do that for any film. A film (MX) - in its big picture had disappointed big time. What is the use in having something in script and characterisation. As a whole it wasn't a worthy film for me (MX). 10A on the other had good screenplay (at least for me). Many events were connected together well, except few. Again, it is a matter of preference. That is why I said - Critics who prefer to RESEARCH and FIND something shall hibernate for ever since I want to see Kamal like this. ![]() |

If critics question them, they patiently reply to those questions. However, KSR makes critics feel uneasy. HE is very clear with what he is doing and hence critics hardly get a chance to get away ! While Madhan was asking KSR about changing his route (thirai parvai on Varalaaru), he made a direct reply that he didn't come to cinema to revolutionize it. such a reply would affect any critic easily and the critics themselves know that very well. I didn't see the vijaytv program. I just saw madhan laughing with KSR at the end and saying we will take many avathars and all. What should I say ? ![]() I don't think KSR would have addressed any fan in orumai. He respects the views of the fans. Otherwise, he wouldn't so successful as a mass masala director. |

Actress Asin played a dual role in the film Dasavatharam. She played a typical Iyengar Brahmin girl and did full justice to her role. Asin gives full credit to Kamal Hassan for her good performance in the movie. She says that it was Kamal who taught her the finer aspects of the language used by Brahmins.
Asin plays a dual role but there is hardly any romance with Kamal in the film. She says that acting with Kamal compensates the lack of her romance with him in the movie. She is still in awe of the 10 different roles played by Kamal. |

Arun Sivaraman (asivaraman)
Published 2008-06-24 14:54 (KST) There is only so much excitement we can handle in a year and this year's quota just overflowed with the release of "Dasavathaaram." Dasavathaaram literally means 10 avatars -- an incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form. Kamal Hassan, actor, director and wannabe writer borrows a bit from mythology, history and science (if you can call bio weapons and chaos, science) to weave a three hour spell. The expensive marketing blitzkrieg promised cinematic nirvana. The makers promised a never before experience for the impoverished movie going masses. Popular sentiment has acknowledged that the movie does live up to its hype. "Dasavathaaram" opens, powerfully, in the 12th century amidst religious strife. Rangaraja Nambi is the priest who defies the king from desecrating a statue of Lord Vishnu. Given a final chance to embrace worship of Lord Shiva, and impervious to the pleadings of his wife (played by Asin) and son, he refuses and succumbs to the king's anger. He is tied to a giant statue of Lord Vishnu and thrown into the ocean. This first 15 minutes of the movie is probably the most riveting ever seen in Tamil cinema. Nine centuries later, with much more modern and practical problems at hand, we have Govind Ramasamy, the scientist. Working in the United States on creating a biological cocktail of viruses, he suddenly discovers that his management is no bunch of saints and would sell the stuff to anyone for money. He takes off with the one vial which is left and that's where the movie takes off as well. He manages to lose his precious vial which is FedEx-ed (or is it DHL-ed?) to India. Pursued by the mercenary Christian Fletcher and his associate Jasmin (Mallika Sherawat), Govind lands in India and is promptly arrested by the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent, Balram Naidu. Govind manages to escape from his clutches and his search for the vial and its extremely sensitive contents leads him to the humble abode of Andal (Asin, again) and her ancient, crazy grandmother Krishnaveni. By a quirk of fate, the vial finds its way into a small statue of Lord Perumal and there it stays till the end of the movie. The statue is on screen most of the time, with Govind and Andal sharing space. They have different priorities, of course -- Govind wants the vial, Andal wants her Lord back. The statue also serves more practical purposes, that of making the minuscule vial more visible and being the subject of Govind, the rationalist's (did I say atheist?) barbs. Other interesting characters find their way into the script -- Kalifullah Khan, Vincent Poovaraghan, Shingen Narahasi, Avtar Singh and President of the United States George W Bush (!) -- in the quest to put the contents of the vial to rest before Chris gets to it. Anything more I reveal about the story would be criminal. Now, to what makes it an interesting watch. Most of the important performances in the movie -- Rangaraja Nambi, Govind Ramasamy, Christian Fletcher, Balram Naidu, Krishnaveni Paatti, Kalifullah Khan, Vincent Poovaraghan, Shingen Narahasi, Avtar Singh and George Bush -- are played by Kamal Hassan. Ten in total, just in case you were thinking about the relevance of the title, and each loosely based on the one of the 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu according to Hindu mythology. The consummate actor has ensured no two roles are even vaguely similar. Helped greatly by Michael Westmore's makeup, he has scripted and enacted 10 completely different characters. And when you get to watch it all under three hours of celluloid, you start wondering how it is possible. You get to see every technique and every trick this man has learnt and perfected in over two decades of experience under the stalwarts of Tamil cinema. For international audiences, it might be a revelation to find out that Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman and Robert DeNiro have competition. In India, it's common knowledge that Kamal Hassan ranks among the finest the country has ever produced. The variety he is capable of is evident in Dasavathaaram. Asin, Mallika Sherawat and numerous other actors who appear on screen for no more than a few minutes have done their part. Dasavathaaram has also been written by Kamal Hassan. It is a minor miracle that his script does not tie itself into knots considering the number of threads which run just beneath the surface. He once again proves that he is pathologically incapable of making a movie without squeezing in his own private agenda. Faith (or rather, the absurdity of blind faith) has always been his pet peeve and he loses no opportunity in baiting it. The bait in Dasavathaaram is Andal, the obsessively religious girl. The subtlety of the discussion on the question of faith which characterized "Anbe Sivam" (and what made it so enjoyable) is substitued by the blunt argumentative dialogue style between Govind and Andal. Of course, the script itself is heavily tilted in favour of the scientist-protagonist. Andal's faith is no match for Govind's logic and rationale. It's time Kamal Hassan puts an end to the over used propoganda - it's becoming bad cinema. Elsewhere, his trademark wit is apparent in several places. George Bush, during a session with his staff on bio warfare, remarking, "If it's complicated, don't explain it," literally brought the house down. The epic has been ably handled on the backend by director K S Ravikumar. On the floors for over two years, the output comes close these justifying the expense it incurred in its making and the huge popular expectation on it. Thotta Tharani's sets work wonders for the look and feel of the movie. Ravivarman has done a decent job with the camera but could definitely have been better. The major letdown is Himesh Reshammiya's music and Devi Sri Prasad's background score. Some poorly done special effects makes the production look tacky. A bit more money should have taken care of that. Irrespective of whether you want to search for deeper undercurrents of meaning or just looking for fast paced entertainment, Dasavathaaram should satisfy you. Just go for experiencing the pure adrenaline rush of a well packaged action-adventure-comedy drama. And, of course, for watching a genius at work. |

Dasavatharam ruling box office
Prasanna Singh [June 24, 2008, 12:57:40 PM] Dasavathaaram (also spelt as Dasavatharam) has not only lived up to the hype it created but it has, in fact, surpassed it. The film has witnessed a never-seen-before opening and is still sustaining the same tempo even after completing almost two weeks in theatres. Some theatres are running 45 shows during the weekends. In total, it is said that nearly 400 shows are running in the city over weekends. There is a house full board outside theatres on weekends for all shows. If one does not book tickets in advance, then surely he or she will be reading the house full sign at the entrance instead of watching the film. The business that the film does on weekdays is incredible! Theatre occupancy is anywhere around 90% on weekdays. It looks like Dasavathaaram is making people take leave from their work or study just like IPL did! Indeed this is an epic from Kamal Haasan! |

my grand father was a film mediator. He used to tell me how Sivaji's three gems incurred losses in the first release and made more money when they released after a while (re release). This is particularly true in case of sivandha man. The last film he mediated was Singaravelan, after the preview of guna, he came back and told us all that qualitywise guna is so much better than Thalapathi, but would take a while before people responded to the theme. He was so true. He lamented that Guna was one performance on par with any sivaji performance and it only takes a second release for guna like any sivaji classic to make money again. However he told that the days of second release was no longer in vogue. He was no more when Mahanadhi got released, but when I saw the movie, there were many nuances of Kamal in the movie which largely went unnoticed in the initial branding of 'pathos movie'. I am trying to get more details on how sivaji's gems got more recognition in their second release (not too far spread apart - some movies were re released within a span of 6 months of the original release). Let me see if I am able to collect some details. |

. Tamizh, Banthalu released Karnan directly all over TN. Unlike today, hardly 50 Prints would be out in the first release and the returns were slow to come. That's the reason NT did Muradan Muthu free of cost. Coming to the next question, Sridhar did not start UK after Sivandha MaN. Instead he started Hero -72 with NT in 1972 which later came out as Vaira Nenjam. UK was started in 1973-74 much after Sivandha MaN. If we go further, let me tell you that Sridhar did Avalukkendru Or(r) Manam(BO failure), Uthharavindri Ulle Vaa (success), Alaigal (Failure) after SM and before UK. As for as I know more than Sridhar wanting to do UK, it was a mutual tie up when MGR asked Sridhar to get the rights of "Dasara Pulludu" (Telugu) which was remade as UK in Tamil. Dear Jaiganesh, Didn't want to interfere so far but since you have repeatedely talked about Sivandha Man, Karnan and Puthiya Paravai, I thought I would put the record straight. Here it is. The BO record of Sivandha MaN. I.Centres where it ran for 100 days and More 1. Chennai - Globe - 145 Days Agasthiya - 117 Days Mekala - 103 Days Noorjehan - 103 Days 2. Madurai - Central - 117 Days 3. Kovai - Royal - 103 Days 4. Salem - Oriental - 110 Days 5. Tiruchi - Raja - 103 days. 6. Tuticorin - Balakrishna - 101 Days. II. Centres where the first 100 shows and above were continious House Full 1. Chennai - Globe - 125 shows (40 days all shows full) Agasthiya -117 shows (39 days all shows Full) 2. Madurai - Central - 101 Shows (31 days all shows full) 3. Kovai - Royal - 103 Shows (32 days all shows full) 4. Tiruchi - Raja - 104 Shows (32 Days all shows full) III. Centres where it ran for 50 days and more 1. Tirunelveli 2. Vellore 3.Thanjai 4.Nagerkoil (75 days) 5. Pondicherry 6.Kumbakonam 7. Dindigul 8.Karaikudi 9.Virudhunagar 10. Pazhani 11.Ooty 12. Erode 13. Pollachi 14.Athhur 15. Dharmapuri 16. Kanchipuram 17. Kadaloor 18. Karaikkal 19. Thiruvannamalai 20. Pattukottai 21. Mayavaram 22. Thambaram Karnan It ran for 108 days in Madurai - Thangam, the biggest theatre in Asia in addition to Chennai, Tiruchy etc. Puthiya Paravai It was a 100 day movie in the first release itself. It came in 1964 and during that year, NT did the following films. 1. Karnan - 100 Days. 2. Pacchai Vilakku - 100 Days 3. Aandavan Kattalai - 70 Days 4. Kai Koduthha Deivam - 100 Days 5. Puthiya Paravai - 100 Days 6. Muradan Muthu - 50 Days 7. Navarathiri - 100 days. So the only movie in your list which didn't do well initially but later did well was Andha Naal. Probably what your grandfather must have meant was even in re releases, these movies ran well. For example Karnan ran for 100 days in Chennai in the late 70s and Puthiya Paravi ran for 75 days in the early 80s. Most of the Film Industry is based on high levels of secrecy...Only the actor, the producer and their auditors will be privy to the actual figure....needless to say the Tax Man, so all the guessing by "sources close" is a lot of Bull ...do not believe or encourage this talk....If you feel like it, walk up to that Bank clerk who was insolent and ask him for his salary or the waiter in a hotel who gave you poor service for his....Will they answer.?

There are several people who used to For thenali they did not understand the tamil kamal speak and for vasoolraja people were comparing the hindi version and says this one was very weak. Those were commercial success. Fine. Thenali is different and probably many Kamal fans loved it. But for vasoolraja there are many who did not want kamal does remakes like that. Bottom line is no film can satify all. For that talking like Kamal taken back tamil cinema back is way tooooooooo much. ![]() Commercially they had settled for some logical flaws agreed. Some of the great things to note in the movie. 1. Technical brilliance. Many places there is not even an slight identity that there are 2 or more Kamals coming together. 2. Acting brilliance when 2 or more Kamal comes together. Yes. Make up was not upto the mark for all the chars. But Kamal's different body Language and Voice modulation for every character was just extra ordinary. No actor of current generation can even think about doing just. Adding to the avove points when many kamals come they did not shoot at the same point of time. Several of the scenes it was after even a week. While looking and commenting may be easy. But just imagine the difficulties for an actor and for the technical crew to make that happen. That too almost 75% of the movie has 2 or more Kamal!! Scenes involving paatti and Afghan man is much more difficult too!! What we had seen could be 75%. when the movie was edited there are several scenes could have taken ouut to fit the movie for shortness. 3. Screenplay. Top class. Future film makers has to refer this movie for sure ![]() 4. Characterization of vincent poovaraghavan and Balram Naidu. ![]() 5. Somehow bringing the concept of Dasavatharam, well i still could not get for all the ten chars. 6. Tsunamni itself acting as a character !! there are many more. Talking like Kamal in the terms of Perarasu movies is not good. Evvaluvau Viyarvai, evvalavu uzhaippu, evvalavu thiramai.. Ippadi oru Nadigan irukura generation la irukoamnu enakku perumayaa irukku. Kamanulla Khan [Am I right?] looked so tall but at the same time that character was no fantasy. In the hospital scene you can see a tall man [his brother?] was standing next to him and he was up to his sholder height. That was a nice thinking. ![]() |
