While the entire Mahanadhi is a gem of a movie, few scenes which r very touchy :
1. Vijay DFT as that road side guy & his family supporting Kamal’s boy. That mini altercation followed by quick understanding of each other. Even when Vijay offers food as a courtesy to both, Poornam V feels uncomfortable but Kamals accepts it with emotions. And finally that parting scene, Vijay’s wife weeps but he controls his emotions & says bye ……. All emotionally arranged scenes. It proves that one need not appear the entire length and breadth of a movie. Just few shots are enough to prove his weight. I liked Vijay's role there. 2. The entire women community in Sona …. Kolkattan joining together to fund for release of kaveri & their parting celebration …. Another emotional moment…. 3. The whole theatre roars in applause when the Jail chief enquires the pounded Warden Villain…what happened …? & his mild reply followed by Kamal silently pulling the kitchen equipment…….. Well well, many more to write about Mahanadhi….Richly deserved a national award & beyond that |

AS - what an amazing entertainer... It had an AMAZING SCREENPLAY for a pucca commerical movie. One of those movies where the screenplay overshadowed Aandavar's acting! Story of identical twins getting separated is an age-old MGR formula.... But the way the rvenge is handled with more importance given to the humor part of the revenge than the revenge itself makes it's screenplay a top drawer stuff! ![]() Remember watching this movie during '89 summer holidays with group of friends! Mind you, the theatre was sheer carnival... Lot's of whistles, excitement, hustle & bustle in the theatre! In fact, I went 3-4 weeks after release! I still remember when Aanadavar delivers a dialogue "En? thirukural kooda thaan 2 adi.. aana adhulla ethana vishayam irrukku..." there was a ear deafening applause! There where "Once More" shouts for "Anatha Adurar othikoo" song! ![]() ![]() ![]() Btw, who wrote the screen-play for AS? Is it singeetham or KH? |

The director was concerned on one thing only. What happens when a person who likes to be among family/friends was kept in lonely place. that is it. And it not that everyone will be affected with mental pressure. that too it was told by doctor, that Sneha was more depressed than the normal. And he even did not talk about joint family. It is always good to be among people instead of leading a lonely life. In my opinion there is no point in asking ava padichirukaalae, vaelaikku poagalaamae kind of things. |

The place they went is a hill station. Not that every one can get a job easily. She did had a neighbour and it was shown she could not spend much time there. In other way cheran was more interested in leading a lonely life. Even he was not intereted in picnic when all the other members gone. He would not have liked Sneha going for a job and waiting for her. And sneha would not have gone for that against husband as she loves her husband a lot. In the movie it was shown that Sneha was not openly talking all her concern. That is the nature of that character. She was not sitting idle though. she was collecting sounds. That itself could be hobbu for some one to get diverted. But not for evryone. Under these circumstance how she is getting affected. It was well dealt in my opinion. Other than that whatever study/ education we do and we go for an excellent job if we are not with our family we miss something. But the feeling will be there with 95 % of the people. |

I don't actually know how a separate 'vasanakarthaa' works ? I see it as a part and parcel of the screenwriting process. What would the screenwriter do then. Just give a general idea of what the scene is and lay bare the spaces the dialogue-writer should fill. Can't imagine something like: Ramasamy is shocked and then slowly his shock turns to anger (raised eyebrows, gaping mouth, wide eyed....looks at her gasping in disbelief...turns towards her and insults her) <dialogue-writer..please insert 'insult' dialogue here> |

It is twelve men talking goddamit. How much more non-visual can it get ! But Sidney Lumet had done a great job in it. You feel sweaty and couched up yourself as you watched it. I don't think that would have happened to me in a play. A stage is a cuboid is a cuboid. In his interestingly written book 'Making Movies', Lumet describes how he chose lenses and designed frames, such that as the movie progresses you start seeing more and more people bunched together heightening the sense of claustrophobia. |

PS: Visiting Sathyam after a very long gap. Surprised to see National Anthem being played at the begining of the movie and more surprising that everyone stood up (of course there was a slide asking everybody to stand up). It was soothing to hear Jana Gana Mana in SPB's voice and it also had him in visual. Is this done in Sathyam all the time? Frequenters can tell. |

Love happens with the wrong person, the wrong time, for the wrong reason (otr for that matter no reason at all), it just happens to him, drags him away from reason and ruins him. I quite disagree with your point about "signature naivete" actually. Mani Ratnam admirably corrects some of his past "sloppiness" in Roja and Bombay. I don't mean to say he had captured the background (Mani Ratnam's God is in the lack of details, you see) of the terrorists extremely well or in great detail, but the portrayal of "ideology" is real, vicious and unrelenting. |

The film's narrative itself is untterly relentless, burying multiple layers of motifs -- like the seamless marriage (!) of thematic elements like the "national" and "feminist," playing out like an allegory of sorts -- in it. Mani's nothing-outside-the-narrative approach makes for great viewing, and certainly reminds one of Hitchcock. The characters don't merely exist as symbols, but with all shades and idiosyncrasies. In other words, the narrative doesn't play to the allegory, the allegory is buried in the narrative and the film plays out just as wonderfully, with the same intensity, even if viewed purely as a love story.
In Iruvar and Dil Se, Mani made two of the most cynical mainstream films of our times, both of which bombed at the box office. And we continue to complain about the "feel-goodness" in Mani's films! |

Genelia's performance as a silly, playful and annoying but oh-well-whatever teenager is, well, silly, playful, annoying and, oh, well whatever. It's surely done in a self-aware manner in that the film is "aware" of how jaw-droppingly "nutcased" she is. But that doesn't acquit her from indulging in absolute excess. The universal problem of atrocious lip-synching also adds adds up. (All of which is of course to say that I didn't think much of her performance. |

equanimus wrote: |
First and foremost, I think the critique of the family patriarch comes off rather well in the film. Another interesting bit is how the writers "link" the presence of a patriarch to that of "dual lives." Not just Santhosh (whose double life, the film deals with, quite elaborately), but everyone in the family is obviously shown that way. Of course, the innocent, playful angel coming into a family of rather sullen faces is an age-old trope, but the film doesn't stop there. Here, more Santhosh wants his love to win over his family, more patriarchal he becomes. Beyond a point, when he's "reduced" to do nothing but control Genelia (which, very interestingly, he can do only when he's "outside" his home) to conform to some normative sort of "discipline" that his father would approve of, she walks out. I think there are quite a few interesting touches like this in the film. |
equanimus wrote: |

In the novella, Marlowe is a ferry boat captain, and he recounts his journey into the deep dark forests of the Congo Free State via Congo river, profoundly disconnected from "civilization." That war inflicts sufferings on its victims is quite obvious - after all isn't that the purpose of war? IMO, it is quite easy to make such a movie. Much more difficult is to tell the tale from the perspective of the occupying soldiers. What do they hope to accomplish? Where does war lead them? Above all, what does patriotism mean in practical terms to those who decide the policy and those who implement them? The common man is more often the tool of implementation and it is very important to make him realise the futility of war for him - personally. I think many anti-war movies have managed to accomplished that. As an aside, there are a multitude of films on the victim's perspective - Holocaust movies, he he... So, if you have the money and influence you can tell the world, ad nauseum, of the horrors you have faced. |

Bala, Okay then, I'll talk now. I hear you when you say it has "become a cliche," but otherwise, I think the universe of a work of art can't be infinite. Even Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' is criticized for "de-humanizing" Africa as an inaccessible, dark continent, devoid of "civilization." An imperialist narration, if you will. Even as this may be seen as a "failure" to depict a "truly African" perspective, I don't find this problematic because the novella itself remains only "indifferent" to it. At least, I've no problems at all with such "indifference." |

Allow me to go back to 'ThEvar Magan' again. That the film doesn't proactively offer a critique of the patriarch (surely I don't have to go to the specifics and ask why Sakthi insists that Banu "behave" in front of Periya ThEvar, I guess) doesn't automatically mean it is problematic. |
equanimus wrote: |
Also, I think we audience tend to choose our favourite ideologies to "access" a film. 'Hey! Ram' is criticized for enabling a Hindutva narrative by showing Saket Ram's "conversion" after meeting Amjad and protecting the Muslim community from extremists. Sometimes, this is what "pure-ideological" perspective does to one, I think. If stories/films are supposed to "stick to" ideologies (pardon my extending your "concern," I'm not at all saying that you're suggesting something on these lines), they'll get reduced to moralizing sessions. |

That said, your larger point is well taken, and I disagree with Kannan when he says, "it is quite easy to make such a movie." I don't even think it's appropriate to estimate a film on these lines (of how "easy" it is). In general, I am snobbish towards the essentialism in saying, "more complex, intelligent, intellectual, layered or what have you, the better." Even as I say -- if at all -- what a "good film" should be like, I'd simultaneously want to see a film that completely disrupts that notion. |

equanimus, I meant easy, as in "easy to tug at the heartstrings of the viewer". That war is bad in general is obvious to us, and that war is superbad for the victims is even more obvious. Positing that the narrative of a "victim's tale" (whatever it means) can accomplish being more earthy (in a thoroughly good sense) and immediately "accessible," but can't transcend to a "greater" universe and reflect on the human condition (pardon me for using the phrase somewhat arbitrarily yet again; surely my vocabulory needs a spanking) is extremely limiting, to my mind. |

In particular Vietnam, I haven't seen that many "Victim's tale" to be honest. |

I think, the movie wasn't that bad to deserve a headbang.Sumaar padam. But the way he screams and beats up ppl really annoys. And seeman being held in the lines of ameer, cheran, bala grade of directors among the media is a sin.Choose between the three.... 1.The last emperor 2.Blood diamond 3.Unforgiven. Choose one for me tonight. As i've heard, all three are equally good. |
