Robo`- Shankar's next film

Shankar is going to get a red carpet reception, when he comes back to Chennai tomorrow (Tuesday July 3), after a month long sojourn abroad. Three weeks after its release, his Sivaji continues to rock, and superstar Rajnikant has given him full credit for it, by saying- "Shankar is the creator of the film and he has worked hard for it".

Now, what next is the question people in the industry are asking? According to sources close to him, Shankar will be totally concentrating on the films being made under his banner 'S'pictures for the next three months. He will be giving some creative inputs to his in-house directors Balaji Sakthivel, and Simbudevan who are immersed in the making of their films for the company.

Meanwhile the grapevine is abuzz with rumours that Shankar is finally starting work on his ambitious pet project Robo, a futuristic science fiction thriller set in the year 3050 of Chennai. The entire shoot of the film can happen only on sets, and also involves a lot of CG work, to give the futuristic look to the film. And that means millions of dollars, and a producer willing to blow up money, and a bigger market to exploit the film.

Actually Shankar has a commitment with Telugu financier and producer Tirupati Prasad to make a film for him. But the latest we hear is that a major Bollywood production house has roped in Prasad as Executive producer, and together they are planning to make the Shankar film in Hindi for a global audience. The production house has also the "dates" of Hrithik Roshan, who is keen to do a film with Shankar.

Though Shankar had initially talked about doing the project with Kamal Hassan in Tamil, he realizes that for such a big project you need a Bollywood hero for the global audiences. Imagine Hrithik, Hindi cinema's best action hero ( Krissh,Dhoom-2), A.R Rahman the only Indian musician with an international following and Shankar. The combination will rock!

And the latest on Robo is that a Hollywood studio, who is already making a film in Hindi, has shown an interest in the project. They want to be co-opted as presenters of the film, are willing to partly fund the project, which will definitely cost upward of Rs 100 crore. Now the ball is in Shankar's court. He will have to take a call in the next few weeks.

DM, its not like that, actually before sivaaji was in rajini's mind, shankar was visiting kamal's office....and once he came to know that kamal is not interested shankar would have thought of this idea...and morover, for kamal doing a shankar film is unthinkable.....INDIAN is enuf. Its good for both parties(Kamal and SHankar) Another good thing, if this project materialises is, south indian[read tamil] directors base will get stronger in bollywood, already our cameramen, musicians ect are strong there...

In sankar's interview in sunt tv on tamil new years day, he said sivaji is a Rajini film and promised it will be a treat for rajini fans. I think he has delivered on his promise. if you expect a landmark film, then its your problem.

As far as people commenting on graphics, i think the cg in style song is world class. Black or white, superstar is superstar.

and why i hope shankar is sujatha said that if robo would hav come out, then it would have been as good as matrix or so...he said something great about that movie, we have to wait and see.................

but seeing the trend, and reading sujatha's last article katrathup petrathum, where he equates his sivaaji's script as one reason for its success i tend to doubt even on what sujaatha says!

Kollywoodusa and Bharat creations has screened a special show of SIVAJI on July 1st
in Chicago to support Tamil Nadu Foundation, a non-profit charity organization in America.

All the proceeds from this show will be donated to TNF. Hundreds of people who are not

TNF will utilize the funds to support poor senior citizens, building schools, providing scholarship for mentally impaired children.

in bangalore the number of prints is very less compared to previous big tamil movies that were released here. so its doing well in multiplexes. in local theatres like sribalaji, the crowd is not impressive.

Vivek escapes Sivaji controversy

Punch dialogues have become the latest thing in vogue in Kollywood and have become very enjoyable too especially in Sivaji where Vivek delivers many pithy phrases that have become the mantra of the generation next. These dialogues have triggered in a series of discussions and guessing games about the actors who have been mentioned as 'Vidalai Pasanga' using punch dialogues.

During a program which was telecast in a private television channel on the 'making of Sivaji', Vivek has clarified a lot of such queries.

The popular comedian states that punch dialogues are very popular especially in Rajni films and in Sivaji as they wanted to bring about some difference, Vivek was brought in to speak most of those terse statements. According to him, Thirukkural is the ultimate example of punch dialogue where useful gospels have been conveyed in succinct two liners.

The buzz is Sivaji has already glided across the Rs 100 crore mark in the first two weeks and will notch up another 50 crore.

Says Nambirajan, who’s distributing the film in North and West India, ‘‘Two years ago, Rajni’s Chandramukhi was a superhit. One can say Sivaji has done more than twice its business already. We’re showing in Surat, Sholapur, Bhiwandi, Calcutta, Pune, Indore, Baroda, Aurangabad, Latur... Sivaji is already in all UK Top Ten lists as well.’’

An SMS that’s doing the rounds sums up the frenzy: ‘The all-India cycle, scooter and car parking collections at theatres screening Sivaji have exceeded the box office collections of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’. Touche!

if sivaaji does great in northland be happy becos its still the south indians and ppl who moved from south who are seeing the movie, to the core. there may be some, SOME,FEW, north indians too who may see but mainly they cannot be accounted. but instead of telling that sivaaji is going great in north, the s_tupid media is telling that it beaten JBJ

evanukaachum theriyuma JBJ is going to get released in this time nnu. and none of that movie's artists are compared as competitors for rjini, like kamal, chiranjevi ect. Amitab appears just ina song. thatsall. so dont oversay a wrong statement again and again.

I saw the BOSS, one more time yesterday. There were a lot of kannadigas in the theater and I could spot a few northies as well! And there were a lot of kids who absolutely enjoyed the first half. The chillies/fair n lovely comedy are big hits among the kids. And the ABCD chicks who have come to watch the movie were pretty impressed with the bald Rajini character. Wow, he looks so freakin young!

Rajini looks stunning in the second half. Nobody will believe that he is 55+. The scene he looked the best was the first office room scene

And the professional ethics scene has become my most favorite in the movie

Watched the film yesterday with my 5-yr old. The crowd was mainly families - lots of middle-aged folks and lots of kids.

Throughly enjoyed the movie even more than the 1st time (and I LOVED it the 1st time). When your mind is clear of the Rajini intro sequence/song expectations, you really start to appreciate the grandeur of the opening sequences. Rajini's subtle body language (specifically his resigned walk when he has lost all his wealth) was awesome. So were his classic 80s look and the gentle movements for the Sahana song!

Nerd _ you were right about the comedy scenes.The kids, including my own, just loved them. He enjoyed the music shop fight too.
And when the 'Athiradee' song ended, he just turned to me and said: "Ennappa ivvalavu seekiramaa paatai mudichuttanga?"
On the drive back, he kept talking & talking about 'Mottai Rajini mama'

WOW!!! Thalaivar does hook 'em young!

Watched Sivaji second time last weekend here. On friday night show it was almost full except for few seats i guess (bear in mind that there are three screens running the same movie).

Enjoyed watching the movie without the usual shouting and whistling The title music and intro scene music was perfect by ARR

The family audience was enjoying the first half with lots of laughter provided by Vivek and Rajini. Infact the "turning white" scenes trashed by so called intellectuals made most people LTAO. Lots of kids had come to the hall and they were laughing non stop and one small guy laughed so hard for one trumpet scene in the Music Shop fight. "Pazhaga varugai tharum Thamizhchelvi" scenes evoked a lot of laughter. It was all smiling faces in the interval.

Perhaps Shankar should have given an interval tag of "Come back soon -- SS is gonna rock" coz some people did miss the Suman's money looting scene. The Bajji scene was awesome, Rajini's dialogue delivery and Sujatha's dialogues were

The story (to guys who are lamenting on lack of story -- read the last lines of this ) takes off in brisk pace with Rajini and his Office room (this is gonna be a popular lingo from now on for sure) taking care of the bad guys. The MRR Vasu scene was so good ... aapu vachaanga...edukka marandhuttanga so was the scene with Haneefa and the Professional Ethics
And towards the end, with Mottai Boss entering the scene it was really top notch effort. Rajini stole the show with that role. He entering Suman's office was similar to Jim Carrey's Mask "Did you guys miss me, I guess not" -- Really COOOOOOOOOOOOOL!! The way he says MGR um naan dhaan, Sivaji um naan dhaan -- Hats off to Shankar for convincing Rajini for such a role. All in all, a movie not to be Missed by Rajini fans and a movie which can be enjoyed by most neutral audience. When I say most, it does not include so called hardcore Rajini haters -- it sure is not going to appeal for someone who does not like Rajini. Similar case in any movie, if you hate the movie's main performer, you are gonna hate that movie.. cant help it

There have been many many complaints of lack of story in the movie. Well, let us assume Shankar did come up with a wonderful script which had none of these, no Rajini styles/no Rajini brand Comedy and it was a movie tightly woven with script then the same people would start telling, well the movie is not for Rajini fans, he should not have attempted this with Rajini. Rajini fans didn't like the movie etc etc... IMO, the movie was taken with only one thought in mind - to entertain - IT SURE DID ENTERTAIN - not only Rajini fans, but even neutral audience. Some scenes which come to my mind immediately

The same student affected by Suman for Capitation fee in one of the earlier scenes ending Suman's life was good - though a cliche, i enjoyed it

Some scenes which could have been avoided was that two girls' being painted pitch black.. they could have been shown as two normal girls instead. Also Shreya stopping train with her dhavani is a bit too much though most guys would not complain i guess That Drive in theatre fight was a bit far etched. The idea was to get Shreya scared so much so that she would not mind turning her husband into CBI's hands, but IMO the fight dragged a bit more than necessary. Other than that, I found the movie COOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. Other than this, guess, there were not any more kaadhu poo suthal scenes, do point out if i have missed out any.

I also heard that this theatre (singapore GV Yishun) screened Sivaji in 7 screens (usual 4) the week before (not sure how much of it is true)

My sis wanted to watch the movie last weekend, when i went to my native, salem. So, me along with my cosuin and his sis, went to the ARRS multiplex where the movie is running in three screens. I neared the counter at 5 30pm for the 6 30pm show. I had confidence that i can get tickets as its already more than 15 days. But to my surprise got to know that it was sold at 5.
Then as usual i looked around for black tickets and was disappointed that none of the gys were there. Cos, i watched thavamaai thavamirundhu here with my parents by buying the tickets in black on the first day.

so i rushed to the geethaalaya theatre, which is the bigger one in capacity in salem. but it was housefull there as well. And then i rushed to kailash nearby. And i was pleased that there was a queue buying tickets, as my brother managed to push into the queue. But as the luck went on vacation for us, when he neared the counter, the counter was closed callin the house full.

Then with so much of disappointement, I kicked my bike, and while moving i was surprised to see my school friends running towards me with surprise. They were 8 of them, and three among them were my ex-school mates. And they were boozed and enjoying, and they have already got their tickets in hand.

As I told them am moving to try out in a different theatre, one of my friend asked me to wait, and he went in to check for black tickets. He came back after a while, and he gave four of his tickets to me, and told me that he ll get the tickets now and come in 5 min. so we went in along with 4 of his friends and started watching the movie, though it was the end of the ballelakka song there.

I felt very bad for missin the SUPER STAR title and other initial stuff.

And in the interval, i went to the smoking zone, where we use to smoke during and school and college days. There i came to know that, my friends din get a first class ticket and not a second class one. They got the bench ticket which is actually 8 rs but sold for 50 rs to them. And the benches were already occupied, two of them managed to sit and lie in the ground right in front of the screen stage and watched the movie.
Proud to have such friends.
I din try to tell him thanks as i never use to do that. I just hugged him there.
And the best part is out of my three friends, two or kamal fans, and they are already in for the third time.

Just wanted to share this info to my fellow friends here, as more than Rajni, these guys gave me goosebumps then.

me and my friends were waiting in the queue before start of first show. couldn't get tickets. got hold of rasigar mandram tickets for matinee, entered the theatre and it was full. we sat in a bench on the side.

Sivaji has emerged the undisputed king all over. The boss is ruling in each and every theatre it has been released in. According to trade pundits, Sivaji has racked in an unbelievable Rs.95 crores in India alone, by the end of its third weekend. Unbelievable, isn’t it? But, it’s true, because as opposed to other Tamil films,

Sivaji was not just released in Tamil Nadu but across India with a record of 650-plus screens including 18 theatres in Maharashtra, 4 in Delhi and Kolkata, respectively. The movie is a major hit in all these theatres. And is a record for any regional language movie. In Delhi even the Hindi junta is choosing Sivaji over Jhoom Barabaar Jhoom and other Hindi movies. The overwhelming response to the film in Delhi came as a surprise considering that the film was in Tamil and without subtitles. But people, who are drawn towards the theatres due to the hype, looking for entertainment, are not disappointed. In Andhra Pradesh, both the Telugu and Tamil version were released, with both doing unbelievable business. In close to three weeks, the Telugu version has crossed Rs.18-crore mark. Maharashtra and Kerala have also reported never-heard-before business.

Overseas too, Sivaji is doing mind-boggling business. In Malaysia it has already crossed Rs7.8-crore mark. In its third weekend, the movie was placed in the second spot behind the big budget summer extravaganza - Transformers, but ahead of the other big release Die Hard 4.0 and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer.

The numbers from the US is not available yet, but the movie is said to have broken all the records for a Tamil movie, taking 100% opening across the country in the first week and dropping down to 80% in the third week. The collections are expected to have crossed Rs.4.5 crores.

Rajinikanth’s popular markets - Japan and South Africa -welcomed The Boss in the last week of June and sources say that the advance booking for the movie is something that was, till recently, unheard of; close to 90% opening is reported for the first weekend in both the countries.

In UK, the movie has collected Rs.2.75 crores so far. Easily one of the biggest Indian movies of the year.

No official details have been released from Singapore and Australia. But here again, the movie had taken a grand opening clocking 100% in the first weekend and dropping down to 75% in the third week.

I saw the movie last sunday in Inox(second time). I didn't enjoy it like the first time.. When I saw first time on the 2nd day of release, I enjoyed with shouting and dancing of the fans.. the atmosphere was too good. But when I saw it the second time, First half is very boring and too long.. I felt like Shankar should have done a real good movie with Superstar. Really shankar missed a golden chance..

cos its shown what was happening with the boys of their age...

There's the catch. If you remember, before the release, this was the concern. They are selling at such a high price (with the prevailing ticket rates) that they HAD to release it in a record number of screens. How can that be an excuse?? Regarding Nagercoil ,It is not a surprise if sivaji doing well so far ..It is released in Chakkaravarthi & Mini Chakkaravarthi ..Mini is less than 200 seater,I think ..Even Darmadurai ,Mannan crossed 100 days in Nagercoil ..Surya Vamsam crossed 200 days ..So sivaji steady in 3rd week is not a surprise.Need to wait few more weeks to see the real difference.

When some early Malaysian screenings suffered technical glitches, some frustrated punters even went on a rampage reminiscent of those "Say No to Violence" posters of our 1999 general election.

But still, a Tamil film? Less than 10 per cent of the population speaks Tamil, while almost all Malaysians speak Malay to some degree. So how can a Tamil film, whose run has not even ended, sell more tickets than any Malay film?

If you are an upper middle-class urban type who speaks mainly English (hands up, you shameless things!), it’s possible that Sivaji would have gone completely under your radar. After all, it’s not sponsored by any fast-food chain or telco. Then you might scratch your coiffured head that this film you’d never heard of will end up achieving around the same numbers as the first Lord of the Rings.

There are several possible reasons. Could it be that the non-Tamil speaking population has taken a sudden interest in subtitles? Or could it be that the small minority that consists of actual Tamil speakers like to watch this same film several times?

More pessimistically: Could it be that people who make Malay films, despite having had seven decades of practice, literally have no idea what our audience wants?

I suppose you can hire a market-research type to find out the reasons. But I like things to be a little mysterious. Life becomes more interesting that way. Besides, how often are market researchers right?

It’s great to live in a country where conventional wisdom can be turned on its head once in a while. For example, it’s assumed that people would rather see a film in a language that they understand. It’s also just assumed that Hindi films would have more appeal than Tamil ones, as the former have a glossier, plusher image, but the numbers have often shown otherwise.

And is Sivaji a bit grittier than, say, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? Well, it’s about a US-based bloke who returns to India to set up a charity foundation. But there are corrupt officials and greedy businessmen in the way. He bribes his way through but then is confronted with a test of his principles. There’s also a love story somewhere. And songs by the venerable A.R. Rahman.

The success of Sivaji also makes one ponder the politics of numbers. It’s usually assumed that the majority will be stronger against the minority. This is true in the case of, say, an election. Leaving aside the touchy matter of how electoral boundaries are drawn, the basic premise is still: You need to get more votes than the other guy.

The plot of Sivaji itself comments on the role of the minority (in this case, an individual who wants to make a change) pitted against a large, corrupt force of vested interests. The individual (presumably) wins. So you can say that the plot has an ontological relationship with its success.

The added irony here, of course, is that Sivaji is not such an underdog. At US$16 million (RM55.1 million), it is reportedly the most expensive Indian film ever. But that’s often the case, is it not? Almost all blockbusters are about the triumph of the little guy against a big force. In the first blockbuster, the force was a form of marine life with big teeth and a scary theme song.

But in subsequent incarnations, it has ranged from aliens to what Eisenhower called the "military-industrial complex".

These blockbusters are made by large corporations, which then touchingly need the contributions of millions of you little punters to keep them solvent. And we keep obliging because they make us feel good, these blockbusters do, and feeling good is not to be sniffed at.

After all this, I blush to admit that I have yet to see Sivaji. I was supposed to watch it at the Coliseum last Sunday but was then told that the queue was too long. I shall try again this weekend.

And I hope that this mania for Tamil movies will extend to the release today of Deepak Kumaran Menon’s Chalanggai (Dancing Bells), which was made entirely by Malaysians and shot mainly in Brickfields. I make a cameo appearance in it!

But even if I were not involved, I would recommend this sweetly-observed tale of youthful dreams coming up against tough choices. It is also a true lepak movie that makes you appreciate your surroundings. Go watch.

Nakee! I went to watch the movie here in San Jose again last weekend (4th time)! The theatre was house-full of course... In fact, it was really soo messy, that when Rajini says 'Singam Single-aa thaan Varum' and then starts running to the chase of the baddies, one of the intellectuals in the theatre shouted, "Enna-pa Singam bayanthu oduthu".... And ended up getting bashed by some fans in the theater for that ARIVAALI comment... The atmosphere was that electric and crazy even in the 4th weekend, and that too, here in San Jose!
