Raina: I’ll do an honest job
- Captain for tour of Zimbabwe takes guard
LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI
A TELEGRAPH EXCLUSIVE
Suresh Raina
Calcutta: Suresh Kumar Raina, who will be captaining a new-look Team India on the forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe (tri-series and two T20 Internationals), took questions from The Telegraph, over the phone, on Saturday evening.
The following are excerpts
Q With just a few days to go before leaving for Zimbabwe, what are your thoughts?
A The tour, as I see it, is an excellent opportunity for the young players... It’s nice that the seniors wanted a break and the selectors took the positive step of picking such a young side. Indeed, one is thankful to the Board.
You’ve had some days, between St Lucia and now, to think about your assignment...
I spoke to Gary (Kirsten, the coach) before leaving the West Indies... We talked about the preparations on getting to Zimbabwe... Yes, I’ve been thinking about the job... I’ve got a good pace attack, all are young and hungry... The tour will be an opportunity to learn and press for a regular berth in the ODIs and stake a claim at the highest level — Test cricket.
Captaining a young team... Is that an advantage or a disadvantage?
(Laughs) Look, main bhi young hoon (23)... I’ll be backed by an excellent support staff, which has helped take India to No.1 in Tests and No.2 in ODIs... Plus, the players are so eager... The ODIs are different, but we want the World Twenty20 disappointment to quickly become a thing of the past.
Biggest challenge?
To try and win every game... However, it’s not that I’ll be putting myself under too much pressure... Nor will I put my team under excessive pressure... I realise one has to be disciplined and one must follow the process... The players are full of josh and committed to making a mark... Being the captain, I’m happy with that.
What’s the kind of captain you’ll be?
By nature, I’m very positive and, while on the field, I’m high on intensity... You’ve seen that... Those things won’t change... I’ve learnt from some of our best captains — Dada (Sourav Ganguly) and Mahi (Mahendra Singh Dhoni)... There are certain things that you tend to pick up.
Do you have a role model captain?
As I’ve said, I’ve learnt from Dada and Mahi... Then, my debut (in 2005) was under Rahulbhai (Dravid)... Dada was the fighter-type, not one to give up... Mahi stays calm... Rahulbhai had his own style.
Who makes a good captain?
Somebody who gets the team to bond together, somebody who is able to communicate... Also, somebody who has the respect of his players. Respect bahut zaroori hai. To top it all, he has to be able to deliver when the chips are down... Has to lead from the front. When a captain does that, it becomes easy for him to demand the same effort from teammates.
Has Dhoni given you tips?
He’s asked me to keep things simple... He said that I’d done well in IPL III (captaining the Chennai Super Kings), when he hadn’t been available for three matches.
Stephen Fleming heads the Super Kings’ support staff. Did you exchange captaincy-related notes with him?
I’d liked him as New Zealand’s captain... His advice would always be to be patient and not rush into things, particularly if the moves haven’t gone well ... Fleming would impart practical things... I’ve got a fair idea of captaincy and can assure you I’ll be doing an honest job.
What did you learn in those three IPL matches?
No.1 that captaincy is a big responsibility... I had to lead some very big names (like Muttiah Muralidharan and Matthew Hayden)... I gained from the seniors’ feedback... I remember Fleming telling me that I’d captain India in the future.
Has there been any communication between the two of you after you got the India captaincy?
Fleming has sent me a ‘do well’ message.
Kirsten, one understands, has been very supportive...
Gary’s himself such a hard worker... He’s very positive and is good at bonding... Indeed, he has solutions for problems.
How do you rate India’s chances in the tri-series?
Very good... The players, as I’ve pointed out, are keen to do well... I’m happy with the team... At some level or the other, I’ve played with all those who’ve been selected... U-19, India A, India... I know them and they know me.
At the international level, you’ve been around for five years (90 ODIs, 16 T20 Internationals). What has this period taught you?
(Pauses) That hard work pays off... Mehnat ka phal bilkul milta hai... I’ve learnt to stay humble... Learnt from watching greats like Sachin (Tendulkar) at close quarters. Simple fundas of life are best.
You must be getting impatient for your first Test cap, isn’t it?
Well, I can only work hard... I was in the squad for the last Test (against South Africa, at the Eden, in February)... I didn’t get to play, but felt I’d scored a hundred when I returned to the hotel after our win... Test cricket is a great form and the biggest performers get so much respect... Sure, there’s something to look forward to.
The last one... I assume, in Zimbabwe, nobody will be seen anywhere close to a pub...
Nahin, nahin.

Zimbabwe a good opportunity for seamers - Raina
Cricinfo staff
May 25, 2010
Indian captain Suresh Raina has said his inexperienced pace-bowling attack had the most to gain from the short tour of Zimbabwe, which includes an ODI tri-series involving Sri Lanka and two Twenty20s. The seamer-friendly tracks in the country will be a learning experience for the batsmen as well, but Raina hoped the fast bowlers will be able to compete for places once the seniors return.
"We have some very good medium pacers. Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar and Ashok Dinda have done well in domestic cricket to earn their place in the side," Raina told the Telegraph ahead of the team's departure. "The Zimbabwe wickets would provide them with a good opportunity to prove themselves again."
The Indian batsmen, including the more established players like Raina himself, struggled to cope with the pace and bounce of the West Indian pitches in the ICC World Twenty20, where the team exited after the Super Eights. However, Raina was confident of a better performance in the longer format.
"In T20 you have to smack every ball from the start. But in the 50-overs game, you have to hold back a bit," he said. "It's a long format. We have players who have done well in ODIs and Tests."
Raina was appointed the stop-gap captain after the selectors decided to rest several senior players, including regular skipper MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan. Raina's most high-profile captaincy stint so far has been leading Chennai Super Kings for a few games in the third season of the IPL in Dhoni's absence. He has led the India A team in the past as well as his home state of Uttar Pradesh, though he's not the first-choice captain there as well.
Raina was confident of leading the country despite his limited experience. "Yes, it was my dream, but it also means added responsibility," Raina said. "I have played under Ganguly, Rahul-bhai [Dravid] and Dhoni. I spoke to Dhoni, he just asked me to keep it simple. And Sachin [Tendulkar] always says, 'if you stay humble you'll achieve all that you want'."
He added that his position in the batting order is not certain. "I will speak to the coach about the line up. I will try to bat up the order, but all that will depend on the situation there."
India play their first game of the tri-series on May 28 against Zimbabwe.
// He should bat @ 3... he is the backbone of this batting line-up.

3.6
Chigumbura to Karthik, no run, on the middle stump and Karthik works it to midwicket. The over ends. Finally. True story.
3.5
Chigumbura to Vijay, 1 run, finally something in the off-stump channel, run down to third man.
3.4
Chigumbura to Vijay, 2 runs, still from round the stumps, full pitched on the legs and Vijay flicks it through midwicket
3.3
Chigumbura to Karthik, 1 run, Karthik goes for the flat-batted heave and top edges it to mid-on where Price takes the "Catch".
3.3
Chigumbura to Karthik, (no ball) 2 runs, Oh ho, it's a no ball now! And also outside leg stump but Karthik flicks it away
He has now switched to round the stumps. Let's see what happens now.
3.3
Chigumbura to Karthik, 5 wides, Oh well .. Another wide down the leg side. Taylor goes flying but he is just Clark Kent without the caper. Can't reach it
3.3
Chigumbura to Karthik, 5 wides, Hmmm ... What is going on out there? Another way ward wide down the leg side. Poor Taylor had no chance.
3.3
Chigumbura to Karthik, 1 wide, shoves this way down the leg side and Taylor makes a half-stop
Tendai: "Its unfortunate Taibu is not in I was looking forward to see him in action. Zimbabwe have an opportunity to impress on home soil. Thanks to Bhaji (Harbhajan) for the new kits I hope the batsman use them well! "
3.2
Chigumbura to Karthik, FOUR, short and wide again and Karthik cuts it away to the boundary. Only Mpofu has bowled really well so far.
3.1
Chigumbura to Karthik, no run, fullish, on the pads, rolls to the on side
3.1
Chigumbura to Karthik, 3 wides, pushes this down the leg side and Taylor, the keeper, gets a hand on it
3.1
Chigumbura to Karthik, 1 wide, in the channel outside off stump, left alone
What nonsense!

India - 40/0 after 4 overs.

I still remember that VBC has opened with Srikkanth in home and with WV Raman (away) in the NZ series during 1988 or 89(About year, I am not sure). VBC has scored a fifty in that series. In one match VBC played as a middle order batsman in NZ.
WVR has opened with KS in a match or two in Sharjah around 1989, I think. But I am sure that WVR has opened with KS in ODI.

Food for thought: The state of Zimbabwean cricket was so bad that at the T20 WC, they did not have proper bats or Cricket kits to play the game. So when Harbhajan Singh saw this, he felt so sad that he immediately arranged for some bats and new kits through Reebok and some friends of his for the Zimbabwean side.
So Zimbabwe has to thank one man - Bhajji for their victory today as their new bats and kits seemed to have done the trick.

Rohit Sharma (101 not out) made his second ODI hundred in his 44th match. He had made 114 in the previous game against Zimbabwe. Rohit thus became the sixth Indian to score hundreds in back to back games, joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid , Sourav Ganguly , VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh.

What a way for Rohit Sharma to prove critics wrong
By Dilip Vengsarkar
2010-05-31
Mumbai
By scoring back-to-back hundreds, Rohit Sharma has chosen the perfect way to answer critics who doubted his focus and fitness
Scoring back-to-back hundreds in one-dayers is an extremely difficult task and it was great to see Rohit Sharma doing it in India colours against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo yesterday.
Rohit Sharma during his unbeaten 101 against Sri Lanka yesterday.
PIC/AFP
When someone gets a hundred, he's batting for almost 50 overs and also fielding for 50 overs. And to do it twice after just a day's rest is extremely commendable.
A lot of questions were raised over Rohit's commitment and focus. It was also said that he was in wrong company and hence cricket was taking a backseat. Eyebrows were raised over his fitness and he seems to have answered the critics in the best way possible with these two hundreds. If you are not fit or determined and focused it's impossible to score successive hundreds.
Tons of ability
There was never any doubt about Rohit's talent. Time and again he has proved that he has the ability to play at the international level. Even when he was very young, his batting was always impressive.
I first saw him during a match at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore where he played an excellent innings. I was Mumbai's chief selector then and immediately pushed for his selection in the reserves of the team that was to play Australia in a warm-up game.
I have always believed that a player must be given an opportunity to play at a higher level at the right time. If you leave it too late, the batsman might not be able to live up to expectations. But if you push him at the right time, it can change a player completely. His confidence gets a boost and there's every chance he will go on to become a better batsman.
Time to Test him
The time is right for Rohit to play Test cricket. His utility is not just in ODIs and T20 cricket. He can be a very good No 5 Test batsman, but for that to happen, it's important that he gets a chance now when he is still young. This way, his career can take shape perfectly and he can go on to become a better batsman.
Having said that, it is important that Rohit shows the desire to up his level. He needs to focus on breaking into the Test squad.
In this age, it is very easy for young, impressionable minds to be affected by the lure of money, parties and other forms of entertainment.
Rohit needs to focus even harder and keep telling himself that he will get better only if he maintains his focus on cricket.
He is fortunate to be sharing a dressing room with Sachin Tendulkar and should look to emulate him. Sachin has been in the spotlight ever since he was 16 but never has his focus wavered. His desire to succeed and the passion for the game is there for all to see and that has kept him grounded and focused towards his job.
If Rohit can follow Sachin's work ethics, I have no doubt he will go on to score many more hundreds at all
levels.

Vijay has squandered his opps. I am sure naman ojha will cash in if he is given just one opportunity. As of now, that might mean aappu for Dinesh karthik but in the long run, Vijay has already lost out unless he plays a 127* against RR like innings at the intl level. That innings secured his IPL future - and I am not sure if he understands that the only way now for him to secure his intl future is to play a similar innings at intl level.
Maybe, we need a VBC to make snide remarks in the dressing room for him to play well!

Yes.. Except for 1 match, the batting was ok. The bowling let us down. In both Zimb matches, our bowlers allowed their openers to flourish..

Sourav, that is why Zim tour squad is different from Asia Cup squad mostly - BCCI-yA kokkA? The goal is to participate in as many tournaments as possible and maximise either revenue or member country support in ICC - in this case, the tour is to ensure that Zimbabwer makes some money and in turn supports us in all ICC decisions.

I mean we have been crying that TN players arent given chances but here's a couple of guys who have been given chances beyond the limit still they cant do well? I feel so ashamed of crying hoarse for TN players.
in IPL, VBC's criticism seems to have spurred on Vijay. Who should criticise him now for him to feel wronged and perform?
