The Big Picture
Regardless of whether England emerge triumphant against Australia, the form team of the tournament, they have turned a corner in terms of public perception. In many ways, the tale of their shortcomings in ICC global events is less a matter of their failure to take home any trophies, but their failure to give themselves a chance to compete. On two occasions in the modern era of one-day cricket, they've found a formula that came close to ending the drought - namely, at the 1992 World Cup, when their greatest player, the ageing Ian Botham, was arguably their weakest link, and in the 2004 Champions Trophy, when Michael Vaughan's men were already building towards the following summer's Ashes.
In almost every other tournament of note they have been little short of a rabble, and that includes their previous forays in the World Twenty20, in South Africa in 2007, when they opened the batting with the bits-and-pieces Darren Maddy, and in 2009, when the Netherlands (including a certain Dirk Nannes) stunned them in the tournament curtain-raiser. At the third time of asking, however, England have hit upon a formula that deserves to succeed precisely because it doesn't see success as a birthright. Every player from 1 to 11 is up for a scrap, and against an Australian side that doesn't know when it's beaten, a scrap is precisely what they can expect.
It has taken the Australians five years to shed the view that Twenty20 is a format for fun. However, Michael Clarke's team is playing the game in the same serious, clinical and tunnel-visioned manner that has been so successful for them in Tests and ODIs over the past decade. Under Clarke's captaincy the side's worst result in 14 matches is the tie against New Zealand in February, which turned into a Super Over defeat.
Since then they have won six matches in a row, including the breath-taking semi-final triumph over Pakistan, in a record that is more suited to Ricky Ponting's all-conquering outfits in 50-over World Cups. Not only are they well balanced, with frightening bowlers and muscular batsmen, but they now expect to win everything. And the only thing that can motivate them more than capturing a trophy they have never held is to beat England in doing it.

Kevin Pietersen's hunger has returned with a vengeance. For 12 anxious months, his game has been racked by unfamiliar self-doubt, triggered in part by injury, and in part by the chastening loss of the England captaincy. Many wondered whether his focus would ever be trained quite as intensely back onto the pitch, especially with the prospect of fatherhood adding an extra dimension of distraction, but in the Caribbean he has been a revelation, with three thumping performances either side of his paternity dash back to England. And what is more, there's the additional incentive of payback, after his role in last summer's Ashes was limited to a walk-on.
Michael Clarke is the main man in the tactical stakes and has marshalled his team brilliantly throughout the tournament. His thinking has been so strong that he has been called the Mike Brearley of Twenty20 cricket, although the description is a kiss-punch compliment. Clarke is the slowest scorer of Australia's squad and is a gap-finder in a line-up of boundary clearers. So far his rotating-the-strike role hasn't been costly, although his 17 off 19 balls in the semi-final left Michael Hussey successfully chasing a miracle to beat Pakistan. With a tournament strike-rate of 74.17, England will be targeting him - without wanting to get him out.
Team news
Australia have only changed their team once during the tournament, when Ryan Harris came in for the injured Mitchell Johnson, so don't expect them to get fancy at such a crucial stage. A return to Barbados means some excitement for the pace trio of Johnson, Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait, who have combined for 31 wickets in this campaign.

The Bridgetown surface has entered a timewarp in the course of the past fortnight. Long gone is the pudding on which West Indies racked up 750-plus in their Test against England last March, and in its place is a trampolinist's paradise that brings to mind the Marshalls and Garners of yesteryear. No venue suits the likes of Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson better, and yet, this is where England themselves will feel happiest. All of their batsmen prefer the ball coming onto the bat, and that - if nothing else - can be guaranteed in the coming contest.

Abdul Razzaq was debuted in the ODIs at the young age of 17 in around 1997. I think his career may be over by a year or two. Many Pakistanis started their career in their teens unlike other teams in the world. Just look at the case of latest sensation left armer Mohd. Ameer who is just 18. Even the great 'Fireball' Waqar Younis too started his career at 19 and almost retired at the age of 32. Waqar's one time colleague (third seamer) under-rated Aaqib Javed too started his career at 16 years and by 18 he has destroyed India in Sharjah with his incisive spell of 7 for 37. I think his career was over in the mid-20s. Pakistan's cricket history says that they start their career at very young age and they are history around 30 when many Australians start their career.

watever maybe the result - but both teams showed great fielding prowess which is still the major difference betn Asian sides* and English/southafrica/australian sides - the way they cut angles and saved 1s and 2s, relay throws, sliding efforts, acrobatic catching at crucial times - i think they are class apart

Current Indian fielding has relatively improved. Newbies are showing some consistency. Though their skills are not in par with Aussies/English sides, IMO it is better than Lankans. Dilshan is a brilliant fielder, name some more? Atleast Indians will make an attempt to catch tough ones unlike Fernando who simply watches the ball falling down. Originally Posted by MADDY

There is a huge lesson for India here-commitment,discipline and the will to win.All three were missing from our team.Time we give hard knocks to some guys who have taken their places for granted and seriously look into the bowling.No way we are going to win anything with 2 half fit medium pacers,1 spinner who struggles to take a wicket and part time spinning allrounders who neither take wickets,contain nor score runs.

BCCI to act against players for nightclub brawl
The BCCI is to issue show-cause notices to some Indian players over their alleged involvement in an altercation at a nightclub in St Lucia following the team's last game of the World Twenty20 on May 11. India exited the tournament after failing to win a single match in the second stage.
"The BCCI president has asked the secretary to issue the show-cause notice tomorrow [Tuesday]", Ratnakar Shetty, the board's chief administrative officer, said.
The move comes after the tour manager, Ranjib Biswal, submitted his report on the tour to the board on Monday. The report is believed to have indicted eight players who were at the nightclub - Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, M Vijay, Suresh Raina and Piyush Chawla. Five of them will be touring Zimbabwe for India's next international assignment, but the pull-up is expected to have no impact on their participation in the tour.
"Biswal met the president and secretary and had a discussion on the tour and the report he submitted," Shetty said. "He gave the information about the incident to both. The board also probed into the incident on its own. After considering all the information gathered, the president has decided to issue a show-cause notice to the concerned players."
This is the first instance of the board pulling up so many players in public. But Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, has always had a reputation for being a strict administrator and on this occasion he felt the board was left with little option but to give a warning to the players considering the World Cup is nine months away. And to tolerate such indiscipline, especially after India's exit from the Super Eights in the World Twenty20 for the second year in a row, was inappropriate.
As of now there is no clear punishment the players have to bear, but they will be informed about being kept under constant surveillance in every tournament in the future and that any further breach of conduct would only prompt a stricter action from the board.
The notices - which have been sent solely on the basis of the nightclub incident - must be replied to within 15 days.
The incident took place on the evening of May 11, after India lost to Sri Lanka to ensure their elimination from the tournament. The players, who had been placed under restricted movement till then, were allowed to go out. A few - including some named in the report - went to a local nightclub where some Indian fans were also present. It is believed the fans, upset by the team's performance, taunted the players, following which the situation escalated.
Incidentally, Biswal denied reports of the brawl when he returned to India. "There is no truth at all about the brawl. It is all media creation that is doing the rounds,'' he said last week.

Michael Clarke - I never had a great impression with his batting neither i dislike him... his odi, test records r good. He looked like a dummy piece in this series... Dunno he really has the talent to lead aus side?!
Cameron White is a supreme talent, underrated IMO, he didnt get many opportunities in RCB, they didnt use him properly... if he was in some other ipl teams like kkr, kxi he would have been the key player. He is not just a striker, he can easily adapt to the situation and can play sensibly, i have seen some of those innings from kfc big bash matches.
Michael Hussy - watched highlights of that semis. chance-e illa... ajmal has a v.good econ. rate in t20s. hitting him like that was just unbelievable. he scored the quickest 50 of this wc... just 22 balls...

While English cricket taps its feet to Bruce Springsteen's Better Days and looks forward with optimism to an Ashes series and a 50-over World Cup, nearly half of the India squad that returned from the Caribbean with no tickertape parades to welcome them must contemplate show-cause notices for their part in a pub fracas.
For more than a decade, we've heard how English cricket could learn by looking east, to wristy strokeplay, wily spin and mastery of reverse swing. Times have changed. India and Pakistan, and maybe even Sri Lanka, could look at this English Twenty20 side to realise where they have gone wrong
Between them, the subcontinent's cricket powers won only seven of 17 matches in the West Indies. All three were hammered by Australia, though Pakistan came within an over of exacting revenge at the second time of asking. On no account could it be called a successful tournament, with the same old frailties popping up to haunt each side.
With the World Cup only nine months away, which way will each of the teams go? Pakistan have not reached the latter stages since 1999, while India did not survive the first round in 2007, leaving Sri Lanka to fly the Asian flag all the way to the final.
Pakistan have done something right by getting rid of some of the egos, including the "termite" called Shoaib Malik.
England's last World Cup campaign in the Caribbean is best remembered for pre-dawn pedalos and Battle of the Bottle headlines. This time, the Red Stripes and the El Dorados went hand-in-hand with terrific team spirit. With 2011 looming, the first thing to do is follow Andy Flower's example and be ruthless in squad selection. Yesterday's six-hitters are of no use tomorrow.
Picking players on reputation is always tempting, but it seldom works. Misbah-ul-Haq, for example, got Pakistan to within a big hit of winning the 2007 World Twenty20 final. But what has been his output over the past 12 months? Is it worth persisting with him when an exciting talent such as Hammad Azam waits backstage?
Isn't it time Sri Lankan cricket drew a line under the Sanath Jayasuriya era? The man's 40 and now has a political career to think of as well. He's still capable of the odd cameo, but when was his last innings of substance? Thank him for yeoman service and send him on his way.
For India, the decisions to be made are harder still. Yuvraj Singh is hardly in the same age bracket as Misbah or Jayasuriya, yet the feeling persists that we may already have seen the best of him. His waistline and lethargic movement in the field tell you exactly why Gary Kirsten felt compelled to have a rant and now is perhaps the best time for him to address the injuries that have plagued him in recent seasons.
England's Twenty20 campaign was notable for the manner in which they kept faith with what they saw as a winning combination. Paul Collingwood and Luke Wright bowled an over each, but, otherwise, there was implicit trust in the five men chosen to do the job.
Pakistan operated on similar lines, though their weak links, such as Mohammad Hafeez, were too easily targeted by eagle-eyed batsmen.
For India, the problem lies in finding five wicket-taking bowlers. You know there is a problem when an opening bowler, Praveen Kumar, bowls at a pace that's slower-ball speed for such as Dirk Nannes and Stuart Broad. Praveen is a clever swing bowler who knows Indian conditions well, but he'll never be better than first or second change.
If this tournament showed anything, it was the value of pacy new-ball operators. Where are India's? And who do Sri Lanka have, apart from Lasith Malinga? How do India's selectors explain their scattergun policy to pace selection? Dhawal Kulkarni was part of the squad that toured New Zealand last year. Dropped without playing a game. Abhimanyu Mithun, who enjoyed a wonderful Ranji Trophy season, was chosen for the home series against South Africa. Dropped after one game. So much for nurture.
On the batting side, the theme is misplaced expectation and a lack of patience. In some ways, Sachin Tendulkar was the worst thing to happen to Indian cricket. These days, every 17-year-old with a little talent is expected to emulate him. It nearly destroyed Ambati Rayudu's career. Only now, at the age of 24, is he finding his way again. Indian cricket should just accept there will never be another Tendulkar.
Had Ian Bell been Indian, he would have been on the scrap heap instead of playing an Ashes-winning innings at The Oval last summer. That a player takes time to find his feet has been forgotten. Suresh Raina still has issues against the short ball, but he's only 23. The way people talk about him and Rohit Sharma, you'd think they were Misbah's age and beyond redemption.
Rahul Dravid spent four seasons in domestic cricket before breaking into the national side. It took him another five years to establish himself as a world-class batsman. Now, we expect batsman of that quality to emerge in the time it takes to make a Pot Noodle.
England won the World Twenty20 because they were brave – they picked Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter ahead of more recognised names such as Matt Prior, and gave Eoin Morgan licence to express himself.
India could have backed the exuberant strokeplay of Manish Pandey or the uber-confidence of Virat Kohli. Instead, they went with the same options that had fallen so short in England a year earlier.
Most of all though, Collingwood's team showed there's just no substitute for sprightliness in the field. Broad may have dropped David Hussey in the final, but the catches he and Collingwood took epitomised a team at the top of their fielding game. India were similarly brilliant in 2007 and questions must be asked as to why so many of the same players have become such laggards in the field now.
Nothing, though, would have been as galling as the sight of Graeme Swann teasing and tormenting Australia's batsmen in the final.
Till that final-over meltdown in the semi-final, Saeed Ajmal bowled beautifully for Pakistan. Suraj Randiv showed glimpses of promise for a Murali-less Sri Lanka, while Harbhajan Singh was tidy [and wicketless] for India. But Swann was a class apart, flighting the ball, turning his quicker one and generally befuddling every batsman he came across.
For decades, a blond Australian apart, the subcontinent had a monopoly on spin talent. No longer. Asian batsmen will thrive on home surfaces, but unless the bowlers improve and are backed up by fielding that's not Laurel-and-Hardy quality, the 2011 World Cup could be a rerun of the 2006 Champions Trophy, when all three sides watched the foreign mob battle for glory.

‘T20 no cricket, Pollard no cricketer’
London: West Indies bowling great Michael Holding did not watch a single match of the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbeans, refuses to call it cricket and doesn’t consider IPL hot property Kieron Pollard a cricketer.
A staunch critic of cricket’s slam-bang format, Holding said he did not bother to watch the T20 World Cup even though it took place in the West Indies.
“Not one ball. I don’t watch Twenty20. It is dumbing-down cricket. They should find another name for it,” said the 56-year-old Jamaican, who was called ‘Whispering Death’ in his playing days for his quiet approach to the bowling crease.
His views on T20 specialists like Kieron Pollard are no less acerbic.
“Pollard in my opinion is not a cricketer,” Holding told The Times, alluding to the fact that 25-year-old all-rounder, who is the costliest player on the IPL roster, may be a T20 star but is yet to make his Test debut.
Post-retirement, the outspoken Jamaican quit ICC Cricket Committee, the West Indies board and Allen Stanford’s league after falling out with the authorities.
Appalled at players chasing easy money, Holding blamed cricket boards and the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not guiding the youngsters. “I can’t say to a young man ‘don’t make a living’, but they need responsible guidance,” he said.
“It is your parents who guide you and in cricket the parents are the boards and the ICC. They need to show some leadership. It saddens me that the West Indies captain is allowed to show up one day before a Test series because he is playing for the IPL,” he said, referring to Chris Gayle’s late turning up in England last year after completing his IPL commitments.
