Dear Wife/Sweetheart/Girl Friend/Partner/whoever it may concern, 1. Between 11 June and 11 July 2010, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World of Soccer, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention. 2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye). 3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don’t mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me. 4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out off your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell on the floor....It won't happen. 5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on (excluding your body parts), and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6amm, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day. 6. Please, please, please!! If you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, it's only a game", or "don’t worry, they'll win next time"". If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me and you’re so called "words of encouragement"" will only lead to a break up or divorce. 7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the half time scores is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one" game; hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse too "spend time together". 8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again, many times. 9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because: a) I will not go, b) I will not go, and c) I will not go. 10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash. 11. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but you have already seen this...why don’t you change the channel to something we can all watch?" Because, the reply will be, "Refer to Rule #2 of this list". 12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank Good the World Cup is only every 4 years". I am immune to these words, because before and after this comes the Champions League, Premier League, Italian League, Spanish League, KPL, FA Cup, Euro Cup, etc. P/S By the way if you get stuck on the road call the Police or AAA. Thank you for your cooperation. |

To football pundits here..
Guys.. why not pick your favourite "world" eleven from the WC squar so that the less knowledged football fanatics can be aware of whoz to watch during the matches ? I know it will be a difficult tasks considering the number of best strikers in the world and to pick just 2 or 3 out of them but it will atleast give us a chance to watch out such players. Thanks |

Argentina boss Diego Maradona insists he doesn't regret choosing not to include Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso in his preliminary World Cup squad.
Maradona has been criticised for ignoring the pair after they both played a crucial part in getting Inter to the Champions League Final which will be held in Madrid on May 22. Speaking to Radio Del Plata, Maradona said: “I am only sorry for Fernando Gago. He was one of my boys, but he played too little this year and that's why I didn't call him up. “There is nothing strange and nothing to explain about Zanetti's exclusion. It was already decided a long time ago. And as for Cambiasso, it's the same story.” Finally Maradona revealed that he intends to stay on in charge of the Albiceleste after the World Cup this summer. “This is the idea, and since I took charge I started a plan not just thinking about the World Cup in South Africa, but also the Copa America,” he concluded. |

Serbia & African teams will be dark horses. Italy/France/Portugal aren't anybody's favorites, will be a major surprise if they do well. |

Lippi, being a great patron of Catennacio, knew how to revitalize it with selective tinkering, so yes, it wasn't in its purest form. I especially agree about the possession style, but not especially attractive.
I don't think any one could completely thrash/dominate Italy in that setup, but were also outplayed for large chunks of the game by France in the finals. I agree though that Germany were pwned by Italy, even if it went to extra time.

Maradona names 23-man squad for World Cup PTI AP Argentina's coach Diego Maradona Argentina coach Diego Maradona named his final 23-man squad for the World Cup on Wednesday, which includes Lionel Messi of Barcelona, Carlos Tevez of Manchester City and most of the country’s other big stars. The big surprise was the inclusion of defender Ariel Garce, who played his first international match for Argentina earlier this month against Haiti. The list includes tremendous power up front, led by Messi, Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Argentina faces Canada on Monday at River Plate’s stadium in Buenos Aires, in what is expected to be its last warm-up before the World Cup. The 1978 and ‘86 champion opens on June 12 in South Africa against Nigeria and also faces Greece and South Korea in Group B. Argentine officials confirmed for the first time that the team will depart for South Africa on May 28. Maradona, who presented a provisional 30-man squad last week, selected a group that includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, seven at midfield and six forwards. Maradona will have as many weapons as any coach in the World Cup. He is likely to start Messi with Tevez or Higuain up front with a midfield anchored by Javier Mascherano, Juan Sebastian Veron, Jonas Gutierrez and Angel Di Maria. The four starters on defense are expected to be Nicolas Otamendi, Martin Demichelis, Walter Samuel and Gabriel Heinze. The starting goalkeeper is almost sure to be Sergio Romero of Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. Garce was one of the few surprises, having played only once with the national team in a 4-0 victory over Haiti earlier this month. Garce was suspended for six months for doping in 2006 and plays for the Argentine club Colon. He was preferred to Inter Milan defender and captain Javier Zanetti. Argentina struggled to reach the World Cup, qualifying fourth -- the last automatic spot from South America. Maradona has been in charge for 19 months but has failed to show the same great flair as a coach that he had as a player. Maradona was invisible yesterday, but was expected to hold a news conference over the weekend. The Argentine federation released the player list on its website, which was clogged for several hours as fans scurried to see the final squad. Argentina has stumbled in recent World Cups. The Gauchos were eliminated in the quarterfinals in the 2006, and were knocked out in the group stage in 2002. In 1998 in France, Argentina also reached the quarterfinals before being ousted. In 1994 in the United States, Argentina reached the final 16 before going out. In that World Cup -- his last as a player -- Maradona was suspended after the second match for testing positive for what was described as a “cocktail” of performance-enhancing drugs including ephedrine. Argentina lost the final at the 1990 tournament in Italy, which came four years after its World Cup title in Mexico. Squad: Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andujar (Catania), Diego Pozo (Colon). Defenders: Nicolas Otamendi (Velez Sarsfield), Martin Demichelis (Bayern Munich), Walter Samuel (Inter Milan), Gabriel Heinze (Marseille), Nicolas Burdisso (AS Roma), Ariel Garce (Colon), Clemente Rodriguez (Estudiantes). Midfielders: Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle), Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Javier Pastore (Palermo), Maxi Rodriguez (Liverpool), Mario Bolatti (Fiorentina). Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Diego Milito (Inter Milan), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Martin Palermo (Boca Juniors). |

Will the Messi, Maradona combine work? AP DYNAMIC DUO: In Lionel Messi (left), coach Diego Maradona has a player capable of winning the World Cup on his own. But the crucial question remains unanswered: Will Argentina perform as a team in South Africa? File Photo: AP Argentina’s camp for the 2010 World Cup will bring together two of the biggest figures in their footballing psyche: coach Diego Maradona and Barcelona gem Lionel Messi. Maradona, who led the team to the World Cup trophy in awe-inspiring fashion in 1986, is hoping that the 22-year-old forward can repeat history and assume the mantle as the greatest player in the world in style. However, it’s not all sunshine for Argentina, as the side suffered mightily to qualify for the finals in South Africa. The `Albiceleste are world powers, to be sure, but the most recent of their world crowns came when Maradona famously lifted the trophy in Mexico City. The man himself came under fire after Argentina’s campaign. Picking up only 28 points and eight wins from their 18 games, they scraped into the finals as the last automatic qualifier from the region, behind such moderate powers as Paraguay and Chile. It took Martin Palermo’s goal in stoppage time at the fan end of the qualifying campaign against Peru to book their passage directly and avoid the ignominy of a play-off with Costa Rica. From the bench, Maradona looked a pale shadow of his dazzling on-field majesty, using more than 80 players over the course of the qualifying campaign. Argentina also suffered the indignity of a 6-1 loss to minnows Bolivia in La Paz. Only his beloved status in his native country kept him from the sack. Having used so many players, Maradona, and his co-coach Carlos Bilardo, never cemented a cohesive unit, or a reliable formation. Troubles aside, Maradona has at his disposal several of the hottest attacking properties in world football right now. It was not just the number but the quality of many of Messi’s goals for Barcelona this season that set chins wagging. With an embarrassment of riches, Maradona can call on Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, Manchester City ace Carlos Tevez or Inter Milan target man Diego Milito to support Messi. Despite a few glaring holes throughout the team, notably prematurely retired playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, Maradona is flush with talent. Bayern’s Martin Demichelis and Barcelona’s Gabriel Milito marshal the defence. Argentina, despite their well-documented problems during the qualifying phase, must still be considered favourites in a competitive Group B, where they line up against Nigeria, South Korea and shock Euro 2004 champion Greece. In the long run what really matters is not what the pundits say but how well you do during that month,” says Mascherano, who is likely to add the steel in midfield. Spain and Brazil look a cut above the rest because they’ve both won trophies in the last couple of years, but experience tells me that the World Cup is won by the team that improves through the tournament, not necessarily the one who plays the best,” he added. |

After going 0-1 down, we equalize. RVP scores with a strong left foot low drive after Kuyt finds him on edge of the area, very workmanlike by Kuyt, thats why the coach prefers to play him all the time. Plus there was a move where RVP does retention plus dribble near center-circle before finding kuyt with a great pass. There's a great understanding between the two. And lot of great team moves by fab-4 with Kuyt in place of Robben. ![]() |

Basically you are allowed to sub your players everyday. Means you can start Rooney in ur starting XI, then if he didnt score much points you can sub him with Villa, who plays much later (that's if you have both Rooney and Villa in ur 23 squad). As for the transfers, u're given 1 free transfers after each gameweek. There will be unlimited transfer after the group stages. ![]() |

Actually Henry was made to apologize because of what French FA and French press did, by antagonizing him. I'm 100% sure this wouldn't be the case in England.
The international villain-ization was done by English press. Yes, because there are Irishmen who work there, and also because there's a French hatred. This has been done to Cantona as well, a French man who played for Man utd. So it's not necessarily Man utd that one is peeved about. But that their fans don't pay heed to the history of bull that press indulge in. And of course, Irish FA ignite it in FIFA headquarters and foreign press, to boost up the standing & potential of their team. By playing the victim game. |

Of course, what he did was wrong. One could make him out to be a 'despicable' villain.
Or that he couldn't appeal for handball when it really was.

What worries me is the glamour of English Club football leads people to eulogising their players and thereon, getting into English press, and falling for their propoganda. Actually Plum, what's so hilarious is the self-righteous tone with which they speak of themselves, the Isles. Even when they play the victim game, the context is lost. A game that was going to penalty shootouts 50-50. Asking for a replay is fine, but that was always going to be impossible. It would set a dangerous precedent with logistic impossibilities if followed. How many games could be replayed? (I'm inclined to talk about the gracious replay that Arsenal and Wenger gave to Sheffield on 99, by going out of their way and NOT imposed by FA)
Now what should have been done? A call for improvements to the game could have been enforced. IF in deed these victim parties wanted a real 'fair play' in the game. (which would, for example, grant a penalty to Anelka vs Given) The incident should have been made the right catalyst for reform - Video reviewing, keeping time like in Hockey (that would put to demise terminologies like Fergie time), goal line technology, etc. |

But it cant be denied that what makes Italy tick was once again proven yesterday - you can outplay them, you can out-attack them, you can create thousand chances against them to just one by them, but the thing about Italy is they'll score off that one chance that they get and are well capable of denying you all your thousand chances. |

Plum, Germany's 90 had dangerous weapons in Brehme and Littbarski (their best player in Germany's 2-1 loss against Holland in Euro 88 semis) ! Agree though Maththaus was the MAN, the LEADER, the VISIONARY - sounds like a cliche Guru tagline but true. One of the hardest no.10's in history of the game. Ballack-lam pichchai edukkanum IMO. The rivalry between Dutch and German players was especially bad, given that former represented Milan while latter played for Inter or Roma. Therefore the club rivalry further enhanced the Handbags and girl spats. ![]() Brazil losing to Argentina in '90 - Diego's magic elevated Argentina against vast riches of Brazil in Careca, Muller (Romario was a reserve IIRC - and would establish his place later ) - that's why I still maintain he's the best. In any case, Brazil weren't saints. There's enough history for Diego's rolling around, Brazilians indulged in strange bullying and tackling strategy - that they also handed potential scythe in 1982 was also on his back of the mind. But it was only the start of 'Dunga era', and Dunga himself established his style of play & leadership later on in 94 (with extra strong Mauro Silva ![]() I think that dutch team with Rijkaard, Van Basten, Gullit, etc were potentially the best, but they all declined in later tournaments after 1988. |

Not at all. Certainly the (today's game - Samuel went out) back-4 and GK of Argentina, imo, are obvious pitfalls. Individually they are poor, but their organization was non-existent. See the successful attacking sides - those who have decent back-4, at least individually, go far.. |

10) China 2002
Pele Prediction: China will qualify for the next round from their 2002 World Cup group. Outcome: China finish bottom of Group C with no wins, no draws, no points, no goals, as well as -9 in their goal-difference column. 9) Spain 1998 Pele Prediction: Spain are favourites for the 1998 World Cup in France. Outcome: Spain humiliatingly dumped out in the first round after losing to Nigeria, and drawing with Paraguay. 8) Colombia To Live American Dream Pele Prediction: Colombia will win the 1994 World Cup in the USA. Outcome: Colombia exit the competition in the first round, finishing bottom of their group. Their defender Andres Escobar is also tragically shot dead by an angry fan after Colombia return home. 7) Argentina, France & World Cup 2002 Pele Prediction: Argentina & France will both reach the final. Outcome: Both countries eliminated in the first round, France without even scoring a goal. 6) Escape To Victory Pele Prediction: During the famous film starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, Allies star Pele is brutally fouled in the first half by the Nazi opponents. The injured Brazilian claims there is no way he can continue and is carried off. The Allies are 4-0 down, and a recovery is deemed impossible. Outcome: Pele returns in the second half and inspires his team to an improbable comeback, even scoring a stunning bicycle kick. Even in fiction, Pele's predictions go wrong. 5) Ronaldo Is Finished Pele Prediction: Ronaldo will never play football again, and his career is over, following a serious injury for Milan in February 2008. Outcome: Ronaldo returns in March 2009 for Corinthians, scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games to win the Campeonato Paulista. 4) Nii Lamptey – ‘The New Pele’ Pele Prediction: After starring in the 1991 Under-17 World Cup, which also featured Alessandro Del Piero, Pele proclaims Ghana youngster Lamptey as his successor, ‘The New Pele’. Outcome: What happens next goes down in football infamy. Lamptey spectacularly fails to fulfil his talent, believing himself that he was cursed by dark forces. The midfielder shifts around clubs such as PSV, Aston Villa, Coventry, Venezia and Ankaragucu, without success, and endures tragedy in his personal life, as two of his children die. 3) Nicky Barmby - Up There With Zidane, Maldini & Ronaldo Pele Prediction: Nicky Barmby will become a world class star. Outcome: Nicky Barmby becomes nothing more than an average player, winning 23 England caps, and never even appearing in a World Cup. 2) Africa Will Rule Pele Prediction: An African nation will win the World Cup before the year 2000. Outcome: It is now 2010, and an African country has still yet to get past the quarter-final. 1) Brazil & World Cup 2002 Pele Prediction: Brazil won’t even get past the group stages. Outcome: Brazil win the World Cup. |

Diego Maradona announced he has an "easy job" coaching Argentina after watching his side beat South Korea 4-1 to close in on a place in the last 16. Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick to add to Park Chu-Young's own goal as Argentina took control of Group B. "I feel good vibrations now we have almost qualified for the last 16 - the way we played was tremendous," he said. "It gives me peace of mind. "When you have amazing players like I have, then my job is an easy one." Argentina sparkled in attack, with Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria, and Higuain all excelling. Higuain scores Argentina's third Higuain became the tournament's top scorer as he netted the first World Cup hat-trick since Pauleta's for Portugal in 2002. "I'm very happy to score the goals, but we have to think of the team as a whole," said the striker, who scored 27 goals for Real Madrid last season. Maradona celebrated the victory, which followed a 1-0 win over Nigeria in their opener, by hugging and kissing his players, but he insisted afterwards: "I still prefer women. "I am dating Veronica, who is blonde and 31 years old. But I like to acknowledge and congratulate my players when they play as well as they did today. That was a pleasing result and display. It was a job well done." The only black mark for Argentina came when Martin Demichelis was caught in possession, allowing Lee Chung-Yong to pull one back just before half-time. But Maradona could afford to be philosophical after his side's strong second-half performance. "Everyone makes mistakes. At the end if the day it did not cost us anything and it is forgotten," he said. "It emboldened the team because in the second half they came out with a strong attitude - they did it for a team-mate who had made a mistake. 606: DEBATE Discuss day seven "South Korea were never capable of controlling us. Of course, they scored but they were never able to dominate any part of the match. "This shows what we have been training for was right. We have discussed certain elements before and they were able to produce that on the pitch. Everything went well." Maradona wrapped up his post-match press conference by saying he made peace with Uefa president Michel Platini. Maradona criticised the former French star, along with Brazil legend Pele, following the reports had attacked his managerial style, but the Argentine coach showed a letter sent to him by Platini clarifying that he had not made such comments. Maradona added: "I want to say sorry to Platini - but not to Pele." |

Lionel Messi, kabbalistic messenger? By DAVID SKOLNI 06/21/2010 05:19 Does Argentina's number 10 conceal the divine? Lionel Messi, considered the world’s most talented contemporary footballer, and currently playing for Argentina in the World Cup in South Africa, celebrates his 23rd birthday on Thursday, June 24. Messi, the 2009 FIFA Footballer of the Year, has already enjoyed a career so impressive, it is hard to believe that he is so young. Well before the World Cup, his name adorned the newspapers worldwide, generating punning headlines such as “Messi Messiah” and “Messi mesmerizes.” His life and skills have been analyzed, compared, contrasted, you name it. Given the current popularity of Kabbala, it is a wonder that we haven’t seen articles looking at Messi from this perspective... until now. According to Kabbala, our Hebrew date of birth impacts significantly on our lives and our destiny. Messi was born at 8:20 p.m. on June 24, 1987, which means that his Hebrew date of birth is Sivan 28, 5747. The number 28, kaf-het, spells the Hebrew word koah, power, which anybody who has watched Messi will have witnessed in his play. But will Messi and his teammates have the power to reach the World Cup final, on Sunday July 11? The week leading up to the final culminates on Shabbat, July 10, when the Jewish people read a double portion from the Torah, Matot-Massei. The name Massei – journeys – bears a striking resemblance to the name Messi, and includes each of the three Hebrew letters (mem, samech and yud) which make up Messi’s name. Massei also includes a fourth letter, ayin – Hebrew for eye – which would suggest we look more carefully at this letter and what it implies. In kabbalistic terms, the letter ayin refers to the eye of God, which manifests itself in the world as divine providence and harmony in all the workings of nature. Divine providence is the idea, held by Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike, that nothing happens by chance, but rather, by the hand of God. Continuing this theme, combining the names Massei and Matot certainly provides a fitting reading in the buildup to the World Cup final – the culmination of the “journeys” of many “tribes” to their final destination. Is it Messi and his tribe who will end the journey victorious? Diego Maradona, the Argentina coach and arguably the best footballer of all time, named Messi as his successor by giving him the national team’s coveted No. 10 jersey when he took over the team in 2007. “He called me to one side in training and said he’d decided that I should be the one to wear it,” Messi later recalled. “For me it’s wonderful, given all the history that’s been associated with it.” The parallels between the two men don’t end there. Maradona scored many memorable goals in his career, including two that stand out, against England, in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. (Maradona’s Argentina had visited Israel and prayed at the Western Wall ahead of that tournament, which it won, and did so again ahead of the 1990 tournament, in which it was beaten in the finals.) The second of the two 1986 goals, voted by FIFA in 2002 as the goal of the century, saw Maradona run from inside his own half and slalom his way through a series of tackles before beating the England goalkeeper. Earlier in the game, he had scored the notorious “hand of God” goal – seemingly with his head, but in fact with a thrust of his hand. Messi’s achievements, remarkably, include two goals almost identical to that pair, scored in the 2006-2007 season. If we look closely at Messi’s name spelt in Hebrew, it can also be read as an abbreviated form of mispar yud – number 10. Yud is the 10th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has the numerical value of 10 both in gematria (kabbalistic numerology) and in everyday life. Tenth grade, for example, in Hebrew, is Kita Yud. The letter yud in Kabbala refers to yad, meaning “hand” or “to thrust.” Does the number 10, on the jersey worn by both Maradona and Messi, two of the greatest footballers the world has known, constitute an act of divine providence, the hand of God? In Judaism, the number 10 is primarily associated with the Ten Commandments given by God at Mount Sinai. The Torah actually states: “The tenth shall be holy for us.” The yud, being the smallest of the 22 letters, represents “the little that holds much.” Given the small physical size of Maradona and Messi, and their enormous football ability, the association with the yud is appropriate, indeed. Which brings us to another legendary number 10. The word ot in Hebrew means letter, sign or wonder. Another word for wonder in Hebrew is pele. Pele, of course, is the name of the brilliant Brazilian footballer who played from 1956 to 1977 – the greatest player of his generation and also arguably of all time. Pele also wore the number 10 shirt. In Sefer Yetzira, The Book of Creation, the Hebrew letters are called the 22 letters of foundation. According to Kabbala, the world was created by the energy of these letters. The fact that on Tuesday, July 22, Messi will play his last game as a 22-year-old, in Argentina’s match against Greece, on a pitch with 22 footballers, provides us with a wonderful opportunity to look more carefully at the power and energy of these 22 Hebrew letters in his context. Messi’s parents were born in Argentina, but he is of Italian ancestry. Angelo Messi came to Argentina in 1887 from Ancona, Italy. The name Messi in Italian means months. According to the Hebrew calendar, the Cup final will take place on Rosh Hodesh, the first day of the month of Av. The symbol of the month of Av, according to Kabbala and related to the Zodiac, is the lion (Leo). Messi’s first name Lionel (Leo) is a wonderful example of a mix of two languages: Lion-el, meaning lion of God, as in Ari-el in Hebrew. Another meaning of Lionel is small lion. Celebrating the new month was the very first commandment given to the People of Israel in the desert. The Ten Commandments are said to contain each of the 613 commandments. Lionel Messi, the little lion with the big roar, wearing the number 10 on his back, is not Messi the Messiah, an idea many people have played with, but rather, Messi the messenger, a man with a message from God. The Cup final, to take place on Rosh Hodesh Av, can be seen as a reminder to us from God whether or not Messi and Argentina will be on the pitch – a reminder with universal significance. Let’s go back, in this context, to consider again the letter ayin, which we noted earlier. The value of the ayin in gematria is 70. The 70 in Kabbala refers to the 70 descendants of Noah, representing the 70 nations and languages of the earth. The divine reminder is that while the World Cup is a wonderful festival of different nations, languages and cultures, after which the winning team takes the trophy home, the teams and all the nations are nonetheless ultimately one. We are all Lionel Messis, confronted by and weaving past our obstacles and challenges. And we all have the coveted number 10 on our backs – the hand of God, the guiding light – as we make our journeys to our personal goals. The writer, a teacher who lives in northern Israel, is a veteran immigrant from South Africa. |
