  Tamim Iqbal doubtful for triangular series
  
  
  Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh opener, is in doubt for the triangular series against India and Sri Lanka in January after he ignored medical advice and continued to play with a fractured hand, the BCB has said.
  
  Tamim, who has scored 1864 runs in 66 ODIs at 28.24, had injured his left hand while batting against Zimbabwe in an ODI in Chittagong on November 5. Initial scans did not reveal a fracture, but the failure to recover prompted a re-examination on November 21, and a hairline fracture was brought to notice. He was advised against any batting during practice or matches until December 7.
  
  "Despite these clear verbal and written instructions, for unclear reasons Tamim had tried batting on a number of occasions, both before and after he was diagnosed with a fracture," the BCB said in a statement. "After every time (he batted]), he complained of increased pain, swelling, and an inability to adequately grip the bat, let alone bat with comfort or competence.
  
  "This ongoing aggravation and re-injury will delay Tamim's recovery, and could give him long term issues with the wrist. As such, there is now some doubt as to his ability to return to fitness by the next international duties in early January."
  
  The triangular series gets underway on January 4 in Mirpur, and will be followed by Bangladesh taking on India in a two-Test series.

  Mashrafe Mortaza named in preliminary squad for tri-series
  
  Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza is set to make his return from injury after being named in a 26-member preliminary squad for next month's home tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and India. Mortaza, who picked up the injury in the West Indies, missed the home ODIs against Zimbabwe in October and November after failing to recover in time from a knee surgery. Shakib Al Hasan led the team in his absence.
  
  Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal was also included, following fears that he may be ruled out due a fractured hand. He had injured his left hand while batting against Zimbabwe in an ODI in Chittagong on November 5 but continued playing despite medical advice not to.
  
  The squad also featured players who severed ties with the unofficial Indian Cricket League - batsman Aftab Ahmed, opener Shahriar Nafees and wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh. There are also new faces in fast bowler Shafiul Islam and Robiul Islam.

  Jamie Siddons confident in current pool
  
  The return of several experienced Bangladesh players from the defunct ICL has not convinced Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons that his team needs to be tinkered with. Four former ICL players - Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, Alok Kapali and Dhiman Ghosh - have been named in a 26-man man preliminary squad for the forthcoming tri-series but Siddons was not too eager to make changes to a squad that has begun winning more consistently.
  
  "It is good that they [the ICL players] have come to preliminary selections and are available for us but they have to continue performing because the boys who have been with us have won us games," he told reporters in Dhaka.
  
  One major concern for the team management is the opener Junaid Siddique, whose extended run of poor form has put pressure on the batting line-up. Junaid's poor form from the ODIs in the West Indies continued at home, when he flopped in every match against Zimbabwe. There has been talk of restoring Shahriar Nafees, who scored a Test century against Australia in 2006 and showed promise before he went to the ICL, back at the top but Siddons was hesitant to do so.
  
  "Opening is a bit of concern but we did well in Zimbabwe where the opening pair added fifty-odd runs every game. Junaid has been a bit inconsistent although he is a talented player," he said. "Shahriar was also very inconsistent when he left us for ICL. It is good that they are scoring runs in the Premier Division Cricket League but it is a big step up from club cricket to international cricket."
  
  Since 13 players defected to form the Dhaka Warriors in September last year, before the 2008-09 season of the ICL, Bangladesh have won 14 ODIs and two Tests. Siddons began coaching Bangladesh in October 2007, replacing Dav Whatmore, and during his tenure Bangladesh won their first overseas Test series, against West Indies in July this year. He recently had his contracted extended to June 2011.

  Tendulkar opts out of Bangladesh tri-series
  
  Sachin Tendulkar has opted out of the tri-series in Bangladesh starting on January 4. He will be replaced by Rohit Sharma in the 16-man squad. Yuvraj Singh has also been included despite a finger injury scare that kept him out of four ODIs in the five-match series against Sri Lanka.
  
  Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar have been dropped and replaced by Sreesnath and Ashok Dinda, who made his Twenty20 debut for India earlier this month. Amit Mishra displaced Pragyan Ojha in an inexplicable game of musical chairs for the back-up spinner's role. Ravindra Jadeja retained his spot as the lone allrounder.
  
  Sreesanth, who did not play a role in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka due to swine flu, has recovered and been named in the squad. The rookie Sudeep Tyagi, a part of the current ODI squad, has kept his place despite not playing a game. Dinesh Karthik has been named as the second wicketkeeper in the squad to Bangladesh.
  
  Rohit, 22, who was dropped from India's ODI squad after an extended run of disappointing scores in limited-overs cricket, last played in the West Indies in July and was pushed aside by Virat Kohli in the batting line-up. Kohli took his chances with both hands, scoring half-centuries in the Champions Trophy and against Sri Lanka before hitting his maiden ODI century to seal the series win against Sri Lanka. Rohit paved his way back through a triple-century in the last round of Ranji Trophy league matches.
  
  Ishant, who was dropped for the first two ODIs against Sri lanka, failed to impress on his return - thanks to Sreesanth's illness - for the later half of the series. In 14 overs in those two matches, he went for 130 runs, and failed to keep up the pressure along with Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra. He managed just two wickets at an average of 65.00 and an economy rate of 9.28. Before that, during the series against Australia at home, he managed five wickets in four matches at 30.00 each. Praveen, who played the first two matches of the Sri Lanka series, managed just one wicket and went at 6.76 runs per over.
  
  India play their first match in Bangladesh in Dhaka on January 5, against Sri Lanka, followed by fixtures on January 7, 10 and 11.
  
  Meanwhile, the selectors named the squad for the final ODI against Sri Lanka to be played in Delhi on December 27. MS Dhoni, who missed the last two matches due to ban over slow over-rates, has returned alongside Dinda for the last game. Virender Sehwag, who stood in for Dhoni and oversaw two consecutive wins, has been named vice-captain. He has earlier stressed on the need for the selectors to groom a younger leader.

  Sri Lanka make sweeping changes for Bangladesh tri-series
  
  Poor form and player injuries have prompted Sri Lanka's selectors to make sweeping changes to the squad for the tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh next month, also featuring India. Those dropped include batsmen Sanath Jayasuriya and Chamara Kapugedera, fast bowler Lasith Malinga and spinner Ajantha Mendis, all of whom had disappointing performances on the recent tour of India.
  
  Sri Lanka lost the three-Test series 0-2, split the two Twenty20s and lost the five-match ODI series 1-3. Injuries to key players through the tour made the assignment in India all the more tough.
  
  In fact, batsman Mahela Jayawardene, allrounder Angelo Mathews and bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando were not considered for the 15-man squad to Bangladesh, having picked up injuries in India.
  
  Middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera was spared the axe, due more to Jayawardene's injury, and selection committee sources said the 33-year-old right-hander would add experience to the batting line-up and help ease the pressure on captain Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga.
  
  Among the new inclusions are Chamara Silva, Lahiru Thirimanne, legspinner Malinga Bandara and fast bowler Thilan Thushara.
  
  Silva, 30, finished as the top run-scorer in the domestic Premier League Tier A tournament, with 900 runs from 11 matches at 56.25 for Bloomfield, scoring three hundreds and four fifties during the campaign. Most impressive was his strike rate of 99.77. Having last played an ODI in August last year, and his last appearance for Sri Lanka being in the 2009 World Twenty20 final against Pakistan, he will keen to make the most of the opportunity.
  
  "We think that Silva has a role to play in the World Cup. He is a fast accumulator of runs and he is a brilliant fielder," selection sources told Cricinfo.
  
  Thirimanne, 20, finished as Ragama Cricket Club's leading run-getter this season, with 709 runs in eight matches at 59.08, including two centuries and five fifties. Selection panel sources said Thirimanne was an exciting prospect and his ability to finsh a game would be extremely handy.
  
  His Ragama team-mate Bandara was also rewarded for his perseverence and was handed another opportunity to seal his place in the national side as a spinner. In fact, the uncertainty surrounding Muralitharan's availability for the 2011 World Cup has prompted the selectors to look elsewhere for spinning options.
  
  Left-arm fast bowler Thushara also made a return to the side after a freak shoulder injury which forced him to return from India. Allrounder Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, Suranga Lakmal and Suraj Randiv, who were replacements to India, have been retained.
  
  The tournament will be played from January 4-13 with Sri Lanka taking on the hosts in the first match in Mirpur.

  Mumbai coach Pravin Amre today made it clear that Sachin Tendulkar will not play their Ranji Trophy semi-final against Delhi.
  
  Speculation was on that since Tendulkar has opted out of the tri-series in Bangladesh he may play in the important match, starting here on Sunday.
  
  However, Amre reasoned that since the senior batsman had taken a break for rest, there was no chance of him playing in the Ranji semi-final.

  The availability of lanky pacer Ishant Sharma, ignored for the tri-angular event in Bangladesh, has bolstered the visiting team's attack.
  
  Amre said he had asked his front line bowlers not to play for their respective office outfits in the ongoing Times Shield tournament to remain fresh for the battle against Delhi who last won the title in the 2007-08 season.

  Mashrafe Mortaza not picked for tri-series
  
  Bangladesh have omitted Mashrafe Mortaza from the squad for next month's tri-series at home, despite his being named in the preliminary squad. Mortaza failed to recover from his knee injury and Shakib Al Hasan will lead the side with wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim as his deputy. The squad also features two former ICL players, opener Shahriar Nafees and batsman Aftab Ahmed, and a fresh face in fast bowler Shafiul Islam.
  
  Mortaza damaged his knee during the first Test on the tour of West Indies in July. The injury ruled him out of the rest of the tour and the subsequent ODI series against Zimbabwe both home and away. However, he was selected in the 26-man preliminary squad - later reduced to 18 - for the tri-series and was named captain for the tournament as well as the home Test series against India. "Mortaza is 80 percent fit for cricket. We are not taking any risk with him," Rafiqul Alam, the Bangladesh Cricket Board's chief selector told AFP.
  
  The two ICL returnees Aftab and Nafees last represented Bangladesh more than a year ago. Alam put their selection down to their performance in the domestic circuit. "They both performed well in the domestic cricket. Aftab is also a useful medium pacer," he said. The 22-year-old Shafiul, the only player in the squad with no international experience, had impressed in the recently concluded Premier Division Cricket League. "He bowls well and is mature enough to cope with international pressure," Alam said.
  
  The two other players dropped from the preliminary squad of 18 are fast bowler Shahadat Hossain and former ICL player Alok Kapali.

  Sehwag wants India to maintain consistency
  
  Virender Sehwag, the Indian batsman, wants his team-mates to maintain the consistency that helped India achieve the No. 1 Test ranking in 2009 as the team arrived in Dhaka for its first assignment of the New Year: a tri-series involving Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, followed by two Tests against Bangladesh.
  
  "Our target is to play good cricket. Last two years, we have played very tough and good cricket and hopefully we will do it in 2010 also," Sehwag said. "It's important for the team to play well consistently. If you do that you will stay No. 1 or No. 2."
  
  India arrived in Bangladesh following a 3-1 victory in a home ODI series against Sri Lanka, who will be without key players such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis and Mahela Jayawardene for the tri-series. Sehwag, however, said India would not be underestimating them.
  
  "When new players break into the side, nobody really knows what he will do or what his strength is. It's difficult for the teams to bowl or bat against them," Sehwag said. "I think Sri Lanka still are a good side. It will be a tough task for us."
  
  The tri-series will begin with Bangladesh taking on Sri Lanka on January 4, while India's first match is against Sri Lanka the following day at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

  Bangladesh fast bowler Nazmul Hossain has been ruled out of the upcoming home tri-series involving India and Sri Lanka because of an injury. He has been replaced by Shahadat Hossain in the Bangladesh Squad.
  
  Nazmul injured his right quadriceps muscle during practice and is likely to be out of action for two weeks. The tri-series begins on January 4 with Bangladesh taking on Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.

  Dilshan to miss game against India due to groin injury
  
  Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan has been virtually ruled of tomorrow's game against India because of a groin strain. He suffered the injury during his match-winning 104 in the opening fixture of the tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh, against the hosts.
  
  Sri Lanka entered the competition with a depleted team and have now been dealt a further blow with Dilshan's injury. The injury came in the 34th over when Dilshan clipped Abdur Razzak to deep square-leg and turned for the second run. He pulled up in pain and it was revealed later that it was a groin injury.

  Kohli is good at cashing in on waak attacks. Which is a good thing because 7 out of 10 odi matches these days are in easy conditions or against weak attacks. So, kohli is likely to be an all time odi great. If he also does well against good attacks and difficult pitches, his destiny looks. good. This is the era of the casher where the ability to maximise in easy conditions is more impotant than technique in difficult conditions because technique is not needed. An austrralian tour comes once in 4 years. In that timea, you can pile up 5k runs and explain away failure in oz as loss of form when you were always destined to fail there given your talent.
  
  Given the circumstances, it makes more sense to pick Kohli ahead of Raina because the latter has some talent and is likely to perish to an ambitious shot while the less talented Kohli is likely to fight hard - atleast in easy conditions which are the norm today - for every run.
  But a team full of kohlis and dhonis will make cricket unwatchable.

  In u 19, aus and sa are not that strong. Kohli also did well in emerging playerts tounament in australia but the pitches used in that tournament were described as subcontinental.
  Talentngaradhu enna? Scoring runs? Then kohli is very talented. When Sachin decided to cut down on cover drives, he scored 241 but he was not the usual Sachin.If a talented player like Raina decides that not losing his wicket is the priority, then he can score as much as kohli. But the nature of talent is that you want to express yourself via the beauty/awesomeness of your strokes which is why Yuvraj is less succesful than Dhoni and which is why. Sachin stands out because for the major part of his career, he has never looked to preserve his wicket but expressed himself. In doing that he still averages 50+. This is not to say that yuvraj can survive if he wants to. For that he needs to practice his defensive technique - something dhoni is very good at - my belief is that dhoni practices his defensive tech while yuvraj doesn't. So msd is alweays a better bet if victory is you only aim. Msd is like the assembly line aussie batsman in that sense - good at imposing himself and intimidating opposition into surrender. Not a bad thing to be especially for victory starved india but I can only give as much respect to him as a batsman as I give an assembly line aussie batsman.
  
  What I want to stress is going forward, icc seems to be interested in neutering pitches world over so we should back the kohlis if we want to be #1. As I observed before, if a rahul dravid came today, he will never make the indian team. Because he will not score as much as kohli in the subconti conditions and will soon be discarded.

  The only saving grace is the rare honourable man such as Dhoni, who slows the bowling rate down under the guise of discussing strategy, and gets himself banned for two ODIs. :rotfl3:That's the closest we will get - in this corporate world - to Gandhi's Non-cooperation Movement.
  
  Time the statisticians joined in the protest. Just like they don't consider matches against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and other non-Test playing nations when carrying out a qualitative analysis, all India-Sri Lanka matches should be disqualified. This torture has gone on for too long, and there should be hell to pay. Sehwag should stand at two double-centuries fewer, and five of Dilshan's international centuries should be struck off the record, never mind how delightful some of those innings were.
  
  Only then will these sides stop fighting each other like slave-gladiators from Rome. Cricket needs Marleys, Dylans, Guevaras. The BCCI and the SLC want blood, like the emperors of old. Yuvraj vs Dhoni was the real situation and no wonder everyone sided with Dhoni. Obviously, the inputs from people who played with him would have been that he is smart, sensible, diplomatic etc but if Sehwag had been there, there would have been atleast a few people who gave a good report for him as well. However wrong that sounds in retrospect, thats how things work here isnt it?

  There are many candidates better than Yuvi. Some of them have done very well already like Vijay. Then there are the Pujaras and Pandeys with good technique and temparament who need to be given a chance now. No point delaying it and giving them a chance a couple of years down the line.

  I thought Ishant bowled well in the first half and picked up couple of quick wickets.. Sehwag should have used his brain a bit more to understand the game in the middle.. The ball was turning a lot and he should have had another spinner at the other end to tighten things up.

  Virender Sehwag has reiterated his stand that Bangladesh are not good enough to take 20 wickets against India.
  
  It was another grim press conference where he initially refused to entertain any questions on his statement on Bangladesh's bowling, but eventually Sehwag decided to answer. "Next question," was his reply when the topic was first raised by a journalist. Finally he answered, albeit in monosyllables, when the issue was repeatedly brought up.
  
  Asked whether he felt Bangladesh could now take 20 Indian wickets, Sehwag's answer came pat: "No. They can't. They still didn't get 20 wickets."
  
  Bangladesh took eight second-innings wickets, an 18 overall, before India declared their second innings. The next question was whether the declaration was done so that Bangladesh did not take 20 wickets. "I had to declare because I wanted to win the game," Sehwag said before he let out a smile.
  
  Sehwag was also asked his thoughts on Bangladesh's performance and he said, "They didn't bat well. They bowled well in the first innings because the conditions helped them. We batted well in the second innings and scored over 400 runs."
  
  The talk moved to India's performance and about Ishant Sharma's bowling before it returned once again to the same issue. "You don't have a good record against Bangladesh. You said you wanted to score some runs this time. Are you satisfied with your batting in this Test?"
  
  "Yes, I am," was Sehwag's short answer.
  
  "He batted well," was his response when asked about Mushfiqur Rahim's innings today. Just before he came to the press conference, Sehwag was booed as he walked up to talk to Ravi Shastri in the post-match ceremony. "You are very popular here, aren't you," Shastri asked.

  In life, bias is expressed in subtle ways only. You saw sehwag going out of the way to promote mishra - that is his bias. In the end, india won so nobody complains. The key is mishra got a chance to take cheap tailend wickets - Usually, that privilege is given to durby. Viru got Mishra to boost his figures.
  
  As with Dhoni, as long as the team is winning, nobody will question it.
  
  This is quite normal for any captain - the only problem I have is with dhoni is different, all time great captain narrative.

  Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is looking to host India for three Tests and an ODI tri-series, with New Zealand the third team, later this year to help fill the void that exists in their international calender for 2010. Nishantha Ranatunga, the SLC secretary, has confirmed the home board is in talks with its counterparts over the tour, which will likely take place in July and August.
  
  "The Test series is almost certain of coming through," said Ranatunga. "We are awaiting confirmation from India and New Zealand on the tri-nation series."
  
  The dates for the proposed series are yet to be finalised but Ranatunga said they would be held between July 9-24 (ODIs) and July 28-August 15 (the Tests).
  
  India toured Sri Lanka in 2008 for three Tests and five ODIs, and last year visited for a limited-overs series against the hosts in January-February and a tri-series, also featuring New Zealand, in September. Sri Lanka then visited India late in 2009 for a full series, losing the Tests and ODIs and squaring the two Twenty20s. They then came up against each other thrice in a tri-series in Bangladesh this month, with Sri Lanka beating India in the final. In the past five years, in fact, Sri Lanka and India have been involved in over 50 contests - nine Tests, 39 ODIs and three Twenty20s.
  
  Sri Lanka's only confirmed series in 2010 is a home contest against West Indies - two Tests and three ODIs - at the end of the year. With none of the other full member countries having any free space available in a crowded international calendar, India are the only country that Sri Lanka can look for help.
  
  Further, the Asia Cup is also slotted from June 15-28 and there is every possibility that Sri Lanka could host it. With relationships between India and Pakistan not too good at the moment following the IPL snub on the Pakistani cricketers, it is very unlikely that the Asia Cup will be held in India. The probability is if Sri Lanka does not host it, the Asia Cup may well go to Bangladesh.
  
  A further snag, according to Ranatunga, is that the timing of the Asia Cup happens to coincide with the football World Cup in South Africa and the commercial aspect of it has also to be looked at. If it is not favourable, the Asia Cup may have to be postponed to a later date. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC), which conducts the Asia Cup, is expected to take a decision on this before the end of the month.
  
  Sri Lanka, who beat India in the recently concluded tri-series in Bangladesh, will meet their again in another tri-series scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe after the ICC World Twenty20 in May.   I am perplexed. Injury? As far as I know, even if he has bias, Dhoni will not show it explicitly - he goes only to the extent of dropping an unfavoured player at the first hint of lack of form while the favoured one gets extra chances. This is the first time he has gone to traditional Indian captaincy attribute of openly and blatantly exhibiting bias (assuming Mishra isnt injured or warned by match referee or banned or someting like that)

  Media would exaggerate but the signs are tell-tale: Sehwag giving so much prominence to Mishra in the first test, and Dhoni promptly dropping Mishra in the second test.
  Now, the second act is very important because MSD has been quite careful so far - when somebody performs well, he hasnt touched him so far, and the only gripes anyone could have thrown at him is that the RP Singhs and Durbys got a lot of chances to be in the team even while underperforming while the others got dropped even after 1-2 bad performances.
  
  He hasnt made it so obvious before - dropping one of the best performers from the previous test. That he had to go to that extent reveals something unpleasant.
  
  Like I have mentioned before, Viru seems to have a plan of pushing Gauti as future captain - infact, today he has given an interview saying Gauti is a future captain of India. As I said, there seems to be a gameplan behind making Gautam the DDD captain.
  
  I wouldnt blame Dhoni alone in this fiasco- he may be feeling that Sehwag and co are politicking against him and huilding a Delhi lobby in the indian team.
  Mark my words, politics being what it is in Indian cricket, if Gautam continues to perform well, and Dhoni loses form for a 3-4 series together, you'll have noises coming out of Delhi to make Gautam the captain.
  
  It does seem like it wont be that bad for Cricket if Gautam loses form in the near future - for that would rally things around Dhoni and clip the Delhi lobby's wings.
