Pertaining to the diskassan yesterday I Found this is SRT Orkut community : `` The reasons behind empty stands in Nagpur are 1] Minimum ticket Rs 750/- and ranges up to Rs 10000/- 2] Single day tickets not available you`ll have to buy for all five days, which was not the case earlier.Even in Bangalore test single day ticket was available for Rs 75/-,so it was crowded. So hardly few people turned up spending this much money. Whereas in Srilanka, most of the times the entry for test match is free. 3] The new stadium is bit outside Nagpur city.(Not sure,I heard) 4] The First and third test had big crowd..The stands were almost full as those cities have passion for cricket and they want to see their local heros shining. In Mohali bhajji was not playing so people didnt turn up.(Possibility!) ,but they missed the best thing they could ever see..(Sachin making new record!) So the verdict is Indian people do understand & like test cricket but are not willing to pay much money for it when they can see it in home. |

Sharma to Katich, 1 run, Dropped by Rahul Dravid at first slip. Katich went chasing a wide delivery outside off stump and got a thick edge to the left of Dravid at a comfortable height and he clangs it. It would have been Katich's third worst shot of his career. What a start. |

Sharma to Katich, FOUR, And he gets it! Well done Kato! It was outside off stump again and he got close to the line of the ball and steered it to third man boundary. Hussey hugs him and the dressing room joins in the celebration. Bob Simpson must be a proud man. |

It is up to the Aussies to move the game along, but it's hard to see how they can do so. Maybe show Ishant leg stump and see whether he is brave enough to aim for it with just one fielder on the leg side?" |

And that's lunch. Indians bowled well outside off stump for most part of the session and dried up the runs. Depending on your point of view and whether you like Dhoni or not, it could be construed as negative tactics, defensive tactics or a clever approach to ask the Australians to make all the pace. You have to win the Test, go get it. Or you can talk about killing Test cricket and stuff. It's a thin line. |

In the process if they loose, 2-0 they shouldn't be too perturbed as by not trying for a win they are still loosing the series. Time to show the world why they are rated No. 1 in the world. As they say, no risk no reward. Dhoni has thrown them the challenge now it is upto Punter's boys to take it and show that they are the real champs." |

He was like "Australia must improvise in the second innings unlike what they did in the first - by moving across the stumps to play the ball on the legside or walking down the track". A narrative emerged in course of today’s play in the fourth Test between India and Australia. Briefly, thus: India put eight men on one side of the field and bowled on that side to choke Australia down. They slowed the run rate down, they slowed the over rate down. This is unfair. Laws need to be changed; this should not be allowed to go on at a time when Test attendance is thinning.
These points are made in the Cricinfo bulletin, and Ian Chappell expands on the theme in his usual end of game podcast. To take the last point first—89 overs were bowled today, one short of the mandatory 90. In the first two Tests, Australia never managed, despite playing time being extended by half an hour, to bowl 85 overs in a day. If Test attendance is the concern, that is when it should have been expressed—would it be fair to turn the argument on its head and suggest that it is because of those tardy over rates that today, no one is coming to the Nagpur stadium to watch one contemporary icon play his 100th Test while another plays his last? Clearly not—if Test cricket is struggling to draw the crowds, you have to look elsewhere for answers; the problem is endemic, it has been noticed any time these last four or five years, and to invoke it in context of today’s play is plain sophistry. More to the immediate point: 24 overs were bowled in the first session of the first day. 24 overs were bowled in the first session today. How does the first instance constitute proper cricket and today’s become a ‘go slow’? So what is the other problem? Eight men on the off side? And that makes the hair on the nape of your neck stand up in horror why? Last time I read the rule book, there was absolutely nothing in there that prohibits eight, or even nine, men standing on that side of the pitch, so what is the problem again? That leaves one other grouse: Ishant and Zaheer bowled well wide of off stump. That raises a question: how wide is ‘wide’? Umpires are empowered to call the wide if in their opinion the batsman does not have a fair chance to play it. In course of the Australian innings, the umpires called two wides. Would it be fair to say that in the opinion of the umpires, the other deliveries were not wide enough to unfairly prevent batsmen from addressing them? What bugs me is this: when spinners [including, on more than one occasion, Shane Warne] pack the leg side and bowl around the wicket, outside leg stump, no outcry is heard. Why is there one now, when seam bowlers bowl outside off with a packed off field? ![]() The universal angst stems from one event: on the day, the Indians out-thought the Australians; MS Dhoni brought to the captaincy the sort of street smarts we have often envied in other teams and other captains ![]() Realizing that he couldn’t allow the Australian batsmen to get up a head of steam, he applied the choke; Katich early on tried to counter with a waft outside off and was lucky to be dropped. He panicked and went into a shell—and that panic pervaded the minds of the remaining batsmen in the hut. Not one batsman in the lineup attempted to counter the tactics. For instance, if a gully cricketer saw just one fielder standing on the leg side, you can bet big money he will take a big sideways stride and swipe across his body, confident that even a mishit will fetch him runs. Do that a few times [As for instance, batsmen have employed the reverse when spinners have stuck to the line outside leg] and you force the fielding captain to change tactics. If you don’t, he won’t—simple. ![]() Had an Indian batting side crawled the way Australia did today—more so after all that pre-series talk of new age cricket—the media and blogs including this would have been vicious. The fact that Australia encountered a strategy it had not anticipated, and hence did not know how to counter, does not in and of itself spell the death knell of Test cricket, nor does it cue an emergency meeting of the ICC rules committee to seek quick fixes. ![]() Just as a matter of interest, what legislation would you bring in? You are allowed to keep only five fielders on any one side of the wicket? Bowlers have to bowl deliveries batsmen can hit? What? ![]() Cricket is as much a game of strategy and tactics as it is of bowling wicket taking balls and hitting the ball out of the park. Captains and players with cricketing intelligence will constantly innovate [Remember the recent kerfluffle about Kevin Pietersen and his switch hitting?]. That is the nature of not just cricket, but all sport—live with it, appreciate the strategy for what it accomplished, and keep your eye peeled for future opposition to come up with interesting counters. One final thought on this theme: The Aussies have the ball in hand; I’d be interested to see if Ricky tries the same trick, and if he does, what the Indians come up with to counter it. Two moments from the actual play that stood out: M Vijay, for the second time in his debut on the field, produced a sharp bit of fielding, and Zaheer’s stroke-of-lunch yorker to get rid of Katich, after the batsman had been nicely primed to expect deliveries outside off. |

Bala, the same tactic has been used by Punter and his team back when they toured india too - ofcourse they used to have a 7-2 field and get sachin or others lean on to the drive and caught in slips bowling wide of off-stump. again the same tactic wudn't have been used with hayden or punter batting. india or msd (as u'd like it to be credited to) used it with hussey/katich the perfect guys perhaps and it worked. if someone tried the same with sehwag/gambhir/laxman or other good players they wud have seen the difference. katich tried breaking thru once and after he edged it he didnt have the guts to do it again. pls give some credit to ishant/zaheer for the discipline in bowling that - u do know it aint easy bowling to a 8-1 offside field without leaking runs. why go that far - even in this series punter tried these tactics for laxman with Mitchell bowling, it didnt work. Laxman got it from 5th 6th stump and flicked to mid-wicket.
