Yeh right. I was shocked to read such comments in rediff messageboard among others. Difference between the Aussie scoring in the 2nd day and the third way was so large that there was no way one could even think of saying such a thing. I was even more shocked to listen to Sunny today. He was like "Australia must improvise in the second innings unlike what they did in the first - by moving across the stumps to play the ball on the legside or walking down the track". I mean how many times can you possibly do that??? (The first runs on legside came in the 21st over yesterday I gather ) And sunny talking about improvisation was plain hilarious. |
. And bowlers werent bowling that wide either. Zaheer was bowling consistently at the 4th n 5th stick as shown by the pitchmap, and ishant coming from over the wicket, perhaps a little wider.

The universal angst stems from one event: on the day, the Indians out-thought the Australians; MS Dhoni brought to the captaincy the sort of street smarts we have often envied in other teams and other captains [In passing, and while on this, should the ICC also legislate against fielding captains who, when the opposition batsmen are on a roll, adjust the field after every ball and call a mid wicket team meeting after every over—as Ponting has done on more than one occasion on this tour?]
Realizing that he couldn’t allow the Australian batsmen to get up a head of steam, he applied the choke; Katich early on tried to counter with a waft outside off and was lucky to be dropped. He panicked and went into a shell—and that panic pervaded the minds of the remaining batsmen in the hut. Not one batsman in the lineup attempted to counter the tactics. For instance, if a gully cricketer saw just one fielder standing on the leg side, you can bet big money he will take a big sideways stride and swipe across his body, confident that even a mishit will fetch him runs. Do that a few times [As for instance, batsmen have employed the reverse when spinners have stuck to the line outside leg] and you force the fielding captain to change tactics. If you don’t, he won’t—simple. And besides, the Indians bowled more conventional lines to Michael Clarke, with a more balanced field setting—so what explains his effort of 8 runs in 44 balls?
Had an Indian batting side crawled the way Australia did today—more so after all that pre-series talk of new age cricket—the media and blogs including this would have been vicious. The fact that Australia encountered a strategy it had not anticipated, and hence did not know how to counter, does not in and of itself spell the death knell of Test cricket, nor does it cue an emergency meeting of the ICC rules committee to seek quick fixes.
Just as a matter of interest, what legislation would you bring in? You are allowed to keep only five fielders on any one side of the wicket? Bowlers have to bowl deliveries batsmen can hit? What?
Cricket is as much a game of strategy and tactics as it is of bowling wicket taking balls and hitting the ball out of the park. Captains and players with cricketing intelligence will constantly innovate [Remember the recent kerfluffle about Kevin Pietersen and his switch hitting?]. That is the nature of not just cricket, but all sport—live with it, appreciate the strategy for what it accomplished, and keep your eye peeled for future opposition to come up with interesting counters. One final thought on this theme: The Aussies have the ball in hand; I’d be interested to see if Ricky tries the same trick, and if he does, what the Indians come up with to counter it. Two moments from the actual play that stood out: M Vijay, for the second time in his debut on the field, produced a sharp bit of fielding, and Zaheer’s stroke-of-lunch yorker to get rid of Katich, after the batsman had been nicely primed to expect deliveries outside off. |

Laxman got it from 5th 6th stump and flicked to mid-wicket.

Forget the across the line shots, they didnt even try to take singles.
Namma bowling epdi irunduchunu paatheengala? it was not as hopelessly dull as Gile's line. There were few teasing deliveriies just outside off. No attempt from the batsman. Bowl the same stuff to sachin, he will still find gaps, steal singles, walk down the pitch to alter lengths.

We can see Australia winning other teams It is all about strond indian batting line up which is good in paper comes quite good these days and not such effective bowling of India is improvised in past 1 or 2 years.
