  BEIJING: India's Olympic campaign on Saturday began on a dismal note as the shooting trio of Anjali Bhagwat, Avneet Kaur Sidhu and Samresh Jung, considered the country's best bets for a medal, fell by the wayside in the qualifying rounds. ( Watch )
  
  India's hopes in judo also evaporated with Tombi Khumujam Devi's campaign lasting only two and a half minutes with the Manipuri judoka outmaneuvered by Ana Hormigo of Portugal in the 48kg category. ( Watch )
  
  The experience of Anjali and the verve of Avneet, making her Olympic debut, were not enough as the duo could not make it to the business end of 10m air rifle event, finishing 29th and 39th respectively.
  
  Samresh, on the other hand, could not replicate his 2006 Commonwealth Games performance, which had earned him the moniker of 'Goldfinger' and shot 92, 95, 96, 98, 96 and 93 to total 570 and finish a lowly 42nd in the air pistol event. ( Watch )
  
  Anjali, who is toiling more these days for her pet 50m Rifle 3 Position event, shot 393, while Avneet totalled 389 at the Beijing shooting hall range.
  
  The first medal event of the Beijing Olympics saw Czech Katerina Emmons (400+103.5) winning the gold at 503.5, while Russian Lioubov Galkina (399+103.1) settled for the silver shooting 502.1. ( Watch )
  
  The bronze went to Snjezana Pejcic (399+101.9) who tallied 500.9.
  
  Anjali began well and looked impressive in her first two attempts before losing the plot. She shot 99 in the first two but things went haywire in the third where she shot 97 and signed off with 98 which was just not enough to make the cut for the eight-shooter final.
  
  "I was going well but had some problem with my body movement. I sort of stabilised myself but that cost me some time and I was under pressure subsequently," a dejected Anjali later said.
  
  Anjali had less than eight minutes to finish her last series of 10 shots and the shooter was clearly in a hurry to finish in time.
  
  "I could not have shot faster in the first two series, that would have hampered my rhythm. But at the same time, I had to speed up.
  
  "I did not expect a miracle here but anyway, it's water under the bridge now," she said.
  
  Avneet too didn't have a bad start and she shot a perfect 100 in the second series as well. But an uneven third series of 96 shook her confidence and she finished with 95 to total 389.
  
  "Once I shot a nine in the third series, it really unnerved me. Suddenly I realised I could not afford to make any more mistakes and that affected my subsequent performance," said the Arjuna awardee.
  
  "I think I lacked that mental strength. The competition standard was in fact lower than say World Cup but I just could not be in full control of my mind.
  
  "Still, it was a good experience and now I know the areas I need to work on," she said.

  Earlier, Bindra ended the poor run of Indian shooters by qualifying for event finals. Bindra finished the qualifying event joint fourth with Romania's George Alin Moldoveanu after the duo shot a score of 596/600. He scored a series of 100,99,100,98,100 and 99 in the qualifiers.

  India sent just 57 members team ..There are many sports we never even tried ..Few countries concentrate on few selected type of sports in which even a single person can win multiple medals ,whereas we used to play games ,which many people can win only one medal.
  
  Hopefully trend will change and India will focus on "அகல உழுவதை விட ஆழ உழுவதே சிறந்தது"

  He entered the finals, 2 pts behind the leader and when at the end of pneultimate shot he was tied with the leader. The final shot was the best of the final, he shot an incredible 10.8 wat a way to handle pressure and this boy had a spinal problem couple of years back and docs have advised not to lift the rifle again

  China's Zhu Qinan, gold medalist at Athens 2004, won the silver medal with a total score of 699.7.

  i was just pulling up my socks and watching DD sports and they were showing the final line up for 10mtr air rifle shooting with an Indian at No.4. I sat and watched the 30 mins proceedings and it was worth its weight in gold and the competition was intense until the last shot

  VERY VERY well said. Its very sad, many parents like us dont have right coaching centres to train our kids for sports like GYMNASTICS even in a cosmo city like BANGALORE!
  
  Even when I did enquire, many trainers DISCOURAGED us, from proceeding in SPORTS LIKE gymnastics which is not very recognised or encouraged and quality equipments amenities LACKING in india.
  
  Those were the precise words they used
  
  My dream of atleast making her attempting JUST fizzled out into nothing and I feel the pain and dissapointments, when I see such grand events.

  In athletics there are 2 hepathletes, anju in long jump and 4 X 400mts women's relay team. But i dont expect any of them to go to the finals even.
  Shooting still Gagan narang and co have 50mtr air rifle event and Anjali bhagwat and co also have an event to go. Gagan might spring a surprise because the other when abinav won the gold, gagan missed the finals of the same event by a solitary point.

  wrap07.. this time there are 3 heptathletes (sushmita, shobha and pramila) participating in a field of close to 35. I just had a glance at their season's best and rest of the field. All the 3 will come good in the running events (100mtr hurdles, 200 mtrs and 800 mtrs), infact they will be on the top 5 in these events and the chances of getting 975-1025 points each is very high. In jumps ( high jump and long jump) they will do be above average and they might end up with 800-900 points each. But when comes to throws (Shot put and Javelin), they are pathetic. They will score in the region of 650-750 and will eventually rob our medal dreams. Isnt it not AAFI's duty to train and provide the adequate support to these hepathletes specifically in throwing events ? Atleast to me it appears Sushmita's season's best will give her a score of 4800 pts out of 5000 in the 5 events but will give her only 1300 pts in the throwing events and she can end up at 6100 pts. Where as 200-250 pts more is good enough for a medal.

  After the 100mtr hurdles and High jump events in heptathlon, the pack is lead by USA's Fountain with total of 2251 pts.
  Among the Indian heptathletes in the fray.. Sushmita was our best bet but she performed well below even her personal best and has 1830 pts Her personal best would have given her atleast additional 125 pts.
  Shobha earned 1828 pts.
  Pramila, the least talked among the three of them managed to equal her personal best in both the events and has 1886 pts. Yet she stands at 20th out of the 43 participants.

  Akhil is a typical jat.. he will just go for his opponent irrespective of the opponent's reputation. He qualified for this event by finishing 3rd in the Asian championships in Mangolia and that was despite fracturing his wrist a month before the event.   Akhil was 2 pts deficit at the end of round 2 and he came back strongly in the next two rounds to tie at 9-9 at the end of the bout. The judges felt Akhil Kumar displayed supremacy in the ring than the World Champion and awarded the bout to Akhil coming back from 2 pts deficit against the current world champion and earning judges applaud is definitely an outstanding effort

  In men's single scull D
  Takhar bajranglal was leading for atleast upto 1500 m he was leading no.1 with huge margin. And then last 500 m, we could see him losing energy...the uruguay guy was gaining tempo. Just like that....in 2 to 3 seconds, he swam across indian guy to get to first position and finishing with the difference of with huge diff, followed by china and then India in third place.
  
  
  The same happened in Double sculls semifinals C/D
  
  Even otherwise they could only go to FC (ie. places 12 to 18)
  the couple was leading intially, then in the last 500 m or so, we find a sudden jerk in energy who are in position 3 and 2 and 4 and Indian goes goes to place 3.
  
  
  Anyway with such timing, all of them could only go to FC (ie. places 12 to 18)
  
  Useful tip to watch is that they save up their energy (not really lagging behind) to be in 3 or 2 or 4 postion) and then comeback so powerfully in the end!
  
  I really wish rare sports and INDIVIDUAL sports like these gets NOTICED in India, other than the regular mundane mass games like cricket and supposedly famouus hockey (arey! national game bhai! ... and did anyone think our national game is cricket )

  Whether it was repeated mentions in the government-controlled media – including a new one uncovered Friday by the Associated Press – or on official gymnastic meet registration forms and websites, He was “this little girl” and a “new star.”
  
  As recently as December 2007, in provincial gymnastics meets and news reports that covered it, she was a 13-year-old prodigy, too young for the 16-year-old Olympic age limit for gymnastics.
  
  Then, suddenly, she wasn’t.
  ADVERTISEMENT
  
  Earlier this year China produced her passport that claimed she was born Jan. 1, 1992, making her old enough to perform a brilliant uneven bar routine and push China to the women’s all around gold medal.
  
  The Chinese either got it wrong in 2007 or wrong in 2008. Considering 2000 Chinese bronze medalist Yang Yun later admitted on state television she was 14 that year, the reported ages of He Kexin and at least two of her teammates have aroused suspicion in nearly everyone except the powers that be – the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  
  Both organizations accepted the new passport as fact, certified He and tried to cover their collective ears at all the complaints. Wednesday, the IOC even slipped a gold medal around He Kexin’s neck.
  
  If the IOC had a modicum of decency and courage (don’t count on it), it would open an immediate investigation into whether it might take that medal right back.
  
  If not for the of-age gymnasts who lost to the Chinese, then for He and her diminutive teammates, who – if they actually are old enough – don’t deserve suspicion tainting their accomplishment.
  
  While the IOC undoubtedly is petrified of humiliating the host country in such a scandal, doing nothing merely humiliates the IOC and continues the belief that the organization is about money, not fair play.
  
  For its part, the Chinese gymnastics delegation told the AP that the mistake was made by the media and provincial officials, not on the passport. Everything is on the up and up.
  
  “It’s definitely a mistake,” Zhang Hongliang told the AP. “Never has any media outlet called me to check the athletes’ ages.
  
  “We already explained this very clearly,” Zhang said. “There’s no need to discuss this thing again.”
  
  Oh, but there is. The age of the Chinese gymnasts has overwhelmed the women’s gymnastics competition.
  
  It’s not just the wild and often ill-timed accusations by USA Gymnastics team coordinator Marta Karoyli and her husband Bela Karoyli, who dubbed the Chinese “half people.”
  
  It’s the snickers from disbelieving fans around the world who can’t come to grips with girls who look so young actually being 16.
  
  The entire competition has lost credibility. Outside of China the focus has been on the birth dates, not the brilliance of the Chinese athletes.
  
  The IOC and FIG can’t continue to bury their heads and hope it will blow away.
  
  “The FIG has received confirmation from the International Olympic Committee that all passports are valid for all gymnasts competing in the Beijing Olympic Games,” FIG said in a statement.
  
  “Stringent control measures are taken at the time of athlete accreditation for all official FIG competitions. Further, all athlete ages for the Beijing Olympic Games are consistent with the FIG records for all past FIG competitions.”
  
  In an effort to protect the health of athletes whose bones and muscles have not fully formed, FIG years ago instituted the 16-year-old age minimum. To compete in these Games, a gymnast had to be born in 1992 or earlier.
  
  A younger and presumably smaller gymnast would have an advantage in some disciplines due to their nimble nature. Nadia Comaneci scored seven perfect-10s in the 1976 Games when she was just 14.
  
  Perhaps it’s believable that one person’s age could be so terribly confused. However, He is just one of the gymnasts with suspicious confusion.
  
  The birth date of Yang Yilin was listed on official national registration lists posted by the General Administration of Sport of China website from 2004-2006 as a too-young Aug. 26, 1993, according to the AP.
  
  On her passport her birth date is Aug. 26, 1992.
  
  Jiang Yuyuan’s birthday was Oct. 1, 1993 as recently as a registration list for a 2007 competition. According to her passport she was born Nov. 1, 1991.
  
  All three of those gymnasts produced high-scoring performances on the uneven bars that gave China a lead it would not relinquish in the women’s team all around. It was one reason Marta Karoyli stomped around mocking the Chinese to her American gymnasts, calling them “little babies” and later claiming one still had “baby teeth.”
  
  Karoyli’s suspicions were never wrong, just the style, means and timing in which she and her husband expressed them. The fact that her team’s performance was not strong and she expanded the conspiracies to include Olympic officials who were supposedly distracting her gymnasts didn’t help (that accusation was refuted by USA Gymnastics itself).
  
  No matter the strength of the allegations, the moments after the competition was not the time for Karoyli to throw a hissy-fit unbecoming of a team coordinator.
  
  Gymnastics deserve better from everyone. This cloud of controversy isn’t fair to the Chinese, the Americans or anyone else, and it shouldn’t be played out in media quotes and old websites.
  
  A real investigation with real explanations is long overdue. It’s time for the IOC to do more than count the money here.

  Beijing (PTI): Boxer Akhil Kumar on Friday scored a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Russian world champion Sergey Vodopyanov at the Olympic Games here, lifting the gloom brought about by the end of India's campaign in tennis and virtual end of further medal hopes in shooting.
  
  Doing the unthinkable, 27-year-old Akhil from Haryana stunned Vodopyanov in an edge-of-the-seat bout to put himself just one win away from an Olympic medal here tonight in a perfect Independence Day gift to India at the Games.
  
  Trailing 2-6 at one stage, a gritty Akhil, who had said prior to today's match that he is inspired by the gold-winning feat of shooter Abhinav Bindra, drew parity in the dying seconds and won on points to reach the quarterfinal of the 54kg category at the Workers' Gymnasium.
  
  The scores were tied at 9-9 at the end of the four-round bout but the five-member declared Akhil the winner on points.
  
  The winner on points is decided by the jury by considering the accepted scores and deleting the highest and lowest scores of the two boxers.
  
  An elated Akhil, who plays his next match on Sunday, insisted he is not ready to settle for anything less than the gold even though he would be assured of a medal if he wins his quarterfinal bout on Sunday.
  
  The Russian world champion grabbed early initiative as he raced to a 6-2 lead midway through the third round.
  
  To make it even more difficult for the Indian, the Russian used both the orthodox and southpaw stance but it did not unsettle Akhil who went on the offensive.
  
  Making a remarkable fightback, Akhil prevailed in the third round to reduce the gap (7-8) and then in the final round, unleashed a a couple of punches bang on target on the Russian to drew parity at 9-9.
  
  The defeat brought the shattered Russian to tears as he clutched his head in disbelief and refused to shake hands with Akhil after the bout.
  
  "It was not easy, for he is the world champion but once I levelled the score, I knew I cannot lose," said Akhil, bathed in sweat.
  
  "It's not possible to assure you of the gold but I can tell you that I'm here to win only gold," said the boxer brimming with confidence and determination.
  
  "I know things would not be easier, in fact it would get even more difficult from now onwards. But I'm here to do my job and return with the gold. If luck decides the outcome, I may return with the bronze. But if confidence is the determining factor, gold is mine," he thundered.
  
  Coach G S Sandhu was effusive in praise for his ward and said, "Only Akhil can do that. He was all along confident and he proved that it was not mere wishful thinking on his part. We are so proud of him.
  
  "The job, however, is not done yet, even though the win would fill him with more confidence. Trailing 2-6, few would have come out winner but he managed that. He is supremely confident and knows what he is going to do."
  
  Away from the boxing ring, India's woes in the continued today as its campaign in tennis came to an end with the defeat of veteran doubles partners Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and further medal hopes in shooting all but over as marksmen Gagan Narang and Sanjeev Rajput failed to qualify for the finals of the 50m rifle prone event.

  I think he wanted to see how far his opponents had fallen behind . Ben Johnson when he raced to gold in 1988 , raised his finger up in the air to signal his victory. That cost him a fraction of a second . That his record got annulled is another story .

  The main problem is not winning at these events. Some consistent winning will bring the fire among other people/athletes, take the case of Tiger Woods and what he brought to Golf. After his entry into professional league, lot of youngsters are interested to play, earlier many people thought the game was meant for older people.

Not many would be aware of this. She was in the newspapers for one day i think. The pity is she is struggling to find a sponsor.

  I think in boxing n judo, both the losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze medals. In wrestling also 2 bronzes are there but the losing semi-finalists will have to beat the best among the losing qtr finalists to get the bronze medals. Otherwise the best among the qtr final loser will get the bronze. Thats why in the medals table, the gold n silver count are same, not bronze

  I didn't mean it to hurt you. Seriously handball looks like a birth child of combining both basketball and football together. It looks funny the way they score goals, imagine 'setharu thengaa kovil munnadi odaikkara maathiri'. It looks almost like water polo, but WP is better IMO.
